Abstract
Description
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] This application is related to and claims the benefit of priority of U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 822,505, filed on March 22, 2019, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Technical Field
[0003] The present invention relates to mousse compositions, products and methods for delivery to the skin, hair and / or mucosal membranes of animals, including humans in particular. Background Art
[0004] Various aerosol and non-aerosol foams for delivering cosmetic, cleansing and / or pharmaceutical compositions to the skin, hair and / or mucous membranes of animals are known in the art. In particular, formulations that produce a substantially uniform, expanding / expandable foam that readily breaks due to shear when dispensed are referred to in the art as "mousse" formulations or products.
[0005] In the formulation of foaming aerosol products, including mousses, an essential component is a propellant, which is used to dispense the liquid concentrate from the container onto the skin, hair and / or mucous membranes of the individual to be treated. In manufacturing, the liquid concentrate portion of the formulation is usually first filled into a container such as a can sealed with a valve cup, and then the propellant is introduced via pressure filling. The container can also be prepared using under-cup filling, in which case the propellant is filled and the valve cup is sealed in one step.
[0006] Up to now, a type of propellant commonly used in the preparation of personal care products is compressed gas. Examples of compressed gas are nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc., which remain as gas in a pressurized container. According to the type of liquid concentrate used, they can be partially dissolved in the liquid concentrate. The pressure produced by this product can be controlled by the amount of the propellant dissolved in the liquid concentrate and the amount of the propellant remaining in the head space. However, compressed gas is not widely used in personal care products because when the can is used, the pressure drops during the life of the can, thereby causing different spray characteristics, lower spray rate and poor foam quality to be produced during the service life of the product. From the perspective of consumer satisfaction, this type of feature is generally considered to be undesirable.
[0007] Another type of propellant commonly used in the formulation of personal care products to date is liquefied gas propellant or LG. LG is a gas at normal temperature and pressure, but becomes a liquid at pressures above atmospheric pressure. The advantage of using LG is that, if properly designed, the LG can maintain a constant pressure throughout the life of the product in the can by converting from a liquid state to a gaseous state when the product in the can is dispensed for use by the consumer. This provides the user with a product that does not vary much in its properties from one use to the next, which is desirable from a consumer satisfaction perspective.
[0008] Certain hydrocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons, as well as dimethyl ether, have been commonly used as LGs. Fluorocarbons were the most widely used propellants until the mid-1970s, when their use was restricted due to concerns about damage to the ozone layer. Hydrocarbons have become the propellant of choice for many personal care applications because they are readily available and less expensive than hydrofluorocarbons. Hydrocarbons used in the personal care industry include mixtures of propane and butane, with the most common being mixtures of two or more of isobutane, n-butane, and propane. For example, the propellant known as "A-46" is a mixture of 15.15 weight percent propane and 84.85 weight percent isobutane. The name A-46 reflects the blend's vapor pressure of 46 psig at 70°F.
[0009] One of the most commonly used hydrofluorocarbon propellants is HFC-152A, which has a vapor pressure of 62 psig at 70°F.
[0010] In the formulation of mousse products, applicants have recognized that the selection and amount of propellant can play a major role in the quality of the foam produced. Applicants believe that formulation parameters that are important to the success of mousse products and that are affected by the propellant used to dispense and form the mousse include: (1) the initial stability of the dispensed foam, which represents the shape and surface characteristics of the foam; (2) the density of the foam produced, which affects the weight of the ingredients dispensed per use; (3) the gloss of the foam; (4) the spreadability of the foam; and (5) the dispensing characteristics of the foam. In addition to the above, environmental issues also affect the success of the use of propellants in the formulation of mousse products because the propellant is generally released into the atmosphere when the product is used. Therefore, those skilled in the art recognize that it is a major challenge to formulate new propellants for mousse products that can simultaneously meet so many important requirements of the foam.
[0011] Applicants have unexpectedly discovered that particularly high quality foams can be produced using a critical range of trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (trans-1234ze) as a propellant and / or in combination with trans-1234ze in specific amounts of the hydrocarbons propane and isobutane, as explained in detail below.
[0012] Applicants have also discovered that the use of certain surface reducing components in mousse formulations, methods and apparatuses enables the formation of mousse foams at desirable volume levels, wherein the level of the surface reducing component in the formulation is unexpectedly low. Additionally, these same surfactants can be used to produce mousse formulations having unexpectedly high densities, which has the desirable advantage of being able to deliver higher levels of cleansing surfactant to the user for a given dose of mousse foam. [0662] Example
[0663] Comparative Examples C1A-C1C - Mousse Shampoo with 5%-10% A-46 Propellant
[0664] Mousse shampoo formulations were prepared using the ingredients and amounts shown in Table 1 below, wherein all amounts are in weight percent:
[0665] Comparison Chart 1 – Shampoo Mousse
[0666]
[0667]
[0668] The formulation is formed by first adding water to a mixing vessel. Components 3 to 4 are then added to the container in the order listed under mixing. Heat is then applied while mixing so that the temperature of the container contents is raised to 70°C. Mixing is continued until a clear liquid phase is formed. The contents of the container are then cooled to room temperature (approximately 25°C). Components 5 to 10 are then added in the order listed, mixing thoroughly between additions. The formulation is then loaded into a can in an amount to produce about 20% head space in the can based on the relative amount of propellant to be added as described below. The can is then sealed. The propellant consisting of A-46 is then added to the can in an amount to produce a can content consisting of 95% by weight of the formulation of Comparative Table 1 and 5% by weight of A-46 propellant. This same experiment was then repeated, but in a consecutive experiment, such that A-46 was then added to the can in an amount to produce can contents consisting of 92.5 wt % and 90 wt % of the formulation of Comparative Table 1 and 7.5 wt % and 10 wt % of A-46 propellant, respectively.
[0669] The contents of the can from each experiment were then expelled by pressing the actuator for 1 second. The foam produced by each can was then evaluated and the results are reported in Table C1 below.
[0670] Table C1
[0671]
[0672] *- Density properties reported herein were measured by filling a 25 mL jar to the brim with foam and measuring the weight of the foam. Density was calculated by dividing the measured weight by the volume of the jar. Photos of the resulting foams for each experiment are provided for comparison Figure C1A , Figure C1B and Figure C1C middle.
[0673] As can be seen from the table and figure, this shampoo mousse formulation, which is typically representative of shampoo mousse formulations, when combined with 5 to 10 wt % of A-46 as a propellant, produces a foam with glossy characteristics that are undesirable for many important applications from a consumer appearance and use perspective.
[0674] Additionally, while the initial foam shape tends to improve with increasing amounts of A-46 propellant, the increase in A-46 propellant has a significant adverse effect on the spreadability of the foam. Specifically, Example C1C foam was tested by dispensing onto the palm of a user's hand (see comparative Figure C1D), who then attempted to spread the formulation onto the skin (see comparative Figures C1E and C1F):
[0675] As shown in the above photos, this formulation with 10% A-46 as propellant performed very poorly from a spreadability perspective. Specifically, the foam did not spread evenly and resulted in large areas where the formulation was not present or only thinly present on the skin.
[0676] Examples 1A-1C - Mousse Shampoo with 5%, 7.5% and 10% trans-1234ze Propellant
[0677] A mousse shampoo formulation identical to that described in Comparative Example C1 was prepared, combined with a propellant, and dispensed as in Comparative Example 1, except that the propellant used consisted of trans-1234ze. The foam generated by each can was then evaluated, and the results are reported in Table 1 below.

[0681] *- The density properties reported herein were measured by filling a 25 mL can to the brim with foam and measuring the weight of the foam. The density was calculated by dividing the measured weight by the volume of the can.

[0683] As can be seen from the table and figure, the gloss and wetness properties of the foam prepared with trans-1234ze as the propellant produced a foam with significantly and unexpectedly superior gloss and wetness compared to the same foam formulation using A-46.
[0684] The foam from Example 1C (10% trans-1234ze as propellant) not only had the best initial foam stability properties, this foam also had excellent spreadability properties. Specifically, the Example 1C foam was tested by dispensing onto the palm of a user (see Figure 1D ), and the user can easily and satisfactorily spread the preparation on the skin (see Figure 1E and Figure 1F ).
[0685] In addition, these examples illustrate that applicants have discovered that unexpectedly advantageous foams can be produced when the amount of trans-1234ze used as a propellant is greater than 5%, more preferably from about 7.5% to about 10%. Specifically, from the perspective of initial foam stability, the foam produced using 5% trans-1234ze produces a foam quality that is below the midpoint of this scale. Specifically, the foam made from 5% trans-1234ze is relatively flat and contains surface pores and bubbles, which will result in the foam being considered to have poor quality and shape from a consumer appearance and use perspective compared to a fluffy foam without visible pores or surface bubbles. On the other hand, as can be seen from Photo 1B above, the use of 7.5% by weight of trans-1234ze as a propellant produces a foam with greatly and unexpectedly improved stability relative to the foam produced in Example 1A. Specifically, the foam produced by Example 1B with 7.5% trans-1234ze is taller (i.e., not flat) and has fewer surface pores and bubbles than the foam produced by Example 1A, and thus the foam would be considered to have superior volume and shape from a consumer appearance and use perspective. Figure 1C As can be seen, the use of 10 wt. % trans-1234ze as a propellant produces a foam having greatly and unexpectedly improved initial stability relative to the foam produced in Example 1 A. Specifically, the foam produced by Example 1C with 10% trans-1234ze is taller and more domed (i.e., not flat) than the foams produced by 5% and 7.5% trans-1234ze, and exhibits substantially no visible surface pores or bubbles, and thus would be perceived as having superior volume and shape from a consumer appearance and use perspective.
[0686] Comparative Examples C2A-C2C - Shaving Mousse with 5%-10% A-46 Propellant
[0687] A shaving preparation was prepared using the ingredients and amounts shown in Comparative Table 2 below:
[0688] Comparison Chart 2 – Shaving Mousse
[0689]
[0690] Formulation is formed by adding components 1, 2 and 3 to the first container and by adding components 4-10 to the second container. The contents of each container are then heated to a temperature of about 70°C to about 75°C. The contents of the first container are then added to the contents of the second container under stirring. The preparation is then loaded into a tank in an amount to produce about 20% of head space in the tank based on the relative amount of the propellant to be added as described below. The tank is then sealed. The propellant consisting of A-46 is then added to the tank in an amount to produce tank contents, which are composed of 95% by weight of the preparation of Comparative Table 2 and 5% by weight of A-46 propellant (Example C2A). This same experiment is then repeated, except that in experiments C2B and C2C, A-46 is added to the tank in an amount to produce tank contents, which are composed of 92.5% by weight and 90% by weight of the preparation of Comparative Table 2 and 7.5% by weight and 10% by weight of A-46 propellant, respectively.
[0691] The foam produced by each can was then evaluated and the results are reported in Table C2 below.
[0692] Table C2
[0693]
[0694] *- Density properties reported herein were measured by filling a 25 mL jar to the brim with foam and measuring the weight of the foam. Density was calculated by dividing the measured weight by the volume of the jar. Photos of the foams obtained for each experiment are provided in the Figure C2A , Figure C2B and Figure C2C middle.
[0695] As can be seen from the table and photographs above, this shaving mousse formulation, which is typically representative of shaving mousse formulations, when combined with 5 to 10 wt % of A-46 as a propellant, produces a foam having shine, wetness and spray characteristics which are detrimental for many important applications from a consumer appearance and use perspective.
[0696] Examples 2A-2C - Shaving mousses with 5%, 7.5% and 10% trans-1234ze propellant
[0697] The same shaving mousse formulation as described in Comparative Example C2 was prepared, combined with a propellant, and dispensed as in Comparative Example 2, except that the propellant used consisted of trans-1234ze. The foam produced by each can was then evaluated, and the results are reported in Table 2 below.

[0701] *- The density properties reported herein were measured by filling a 25 mL can to the brim with foam and measuring the weight of the foam. The density was calculated by dividing the measured weight by the volume of the can.
[0702] Photographs of the foams obtained in each experiment are provided in the Figure 2A , Figure 2B and Figure 2C middle.
[0703] As can be seen from the tables and photographs above, the gloss, wetness, spreadability, and spray characteristics of the foam produced using trans-1234ze as the propellant are significantly and unexpectedly superior to those of the same foam formulation but using A-46 as the propellant. In addition, these examples illustrate that applicants have discovered that unexpectedly favorable foams can be produced when the amount of trans-1234ze used as a propellant is greater than 5%, more preferably from about 7.5% to about 10%. Specifically, from a foam shape and quantity perspective, the foam produced using 5% trans-1234ze produces foam qualities close to or below the midpoint on each of these scales. Specifically, the foam made from 5% trans-1234ze is relatively flat and has many relatively large (easily visible) surface pores and bubbles. This combination of conditions will result in a foam that is perceived as having relatively poor quality and shape from a consumer appearance and use perspective, compared to a taller foam without visible pores or surface bubbles. On the other hand, as shown from Figure 2B As can be seen, the use of 7.5 wt. % trans-1234ze as a propellant produces a foam having greatly and unexpectedly improved volume and shape relative to the foam produced in Example 2A. Specifically, the foam produced by Example 2B with 7.5% trans-1234ze is taller (i.e., not flat and more domed) and has fewer surface pores and bubbles than the foam produced by Example 2A, and thus the foam would be considered to have superior volume and shape from a consumer appearance and use perspective. Furthermore, as can be seen from the above Figure 2C As can be seen, the use of 10 wt. % trans-1234ze as a propellant produces a foam having greatly and unexpectedly improved volume and shape relative to the foam produced in Example 2A. Specifically, the foam produced by Example 2C with 10% trans-1234ze is taller (i.e., not flat and more domed) than the foam produced by Examples 2A and 2B, and exhibits substantially no visible surface pores or bubbles, and thus would be considered to have excellent volume and shape from a consumer appearance and use perspective.

[0707]
[0708] Form the preparation by adding the components to the container in the listed order, wherein each addition is stirred. Form a clear liquid. Then the preparation is loaded into the tank in an amount to produce about 20% head space in the tank based on the relative amount of the propellant to be added as described below. Then the tank is sealed. Then the propellant composed of A-46 is added to the tank in an amount to produce tank contents, which are composed of 95% by weight of the preparation of the comparative table 3 and 5% by weight of the A-46 propellant (Example C3A). Then repeat this same experiment, except in experiments C3B and C3C, A-46 is added to the tank in an amount to produce tank contents, which are composed of 92.5% by weight and 90% by weight of the preparation of the comparative table 3 and 7.5% by weight and 10% by weight of the A-46 propellant respectively.
[0709] The foam produced by each can was then evaluated and the results are reported in Table C3 below.

[0716] Examples 3A-3C - Styling Mousses with 5%, 7.5% and 10% trans-1234ze Propellant
[0717] A styling mousse formulation identical to that described in Comparative Example C3 was prepared, combined with a propellant, and dispensed as in Comparative Example 3, except that the propellant used consisted of trans-1234ze. The foam produced by each can was then evaluated, and the results are reported in Table 3 below.

[0723] As can be seen from the tables and figures, the gloss, wetness, spreadability, and spray characteristics of the foam produced using trans-1234ze as a propellant are significantly and unexpectedly superior to those of the same foam formulation but using A-46 as a propellant. This combination of conditions will result in a foam that is perceived to have relatively poor quantity, stability, and shape from a consumer appearance and use perspective compared to a taller foam without visible pores or surface bubbles. On the other hand, as can be seen from the above Figure 3B As can be seen, the use of 7.5 wt% trans-1234ze as a propellant produces a foam having greatly and unexpectedly improved shape, stability, and volume relative to the foam produced in Example 3A. Specifically, the foam produced by Example 3B with 7.5% trans-1234ze is taller (i.e., not flat and more domed) and has fewer surface pores and bubbles than the foam produced by Example 3A, and thus the foam would be perceived as having superior volume and shape from a consumer appearance and use perspective. Specifically, the foam produced by Example 3C with 10% trans-1234ze is taller and more domed (i.e., not flat), and exhibits substantially no visible surface pores or bubbles, and thus would be considered to have superior volume and shape from a consumer appearance and use perspective.
[0724] Examples 4A-4I - Mousse Shampoo with Propellant Containing Trans-1234ze and A-46
[0725] The same shampoo mousse formulation as described in Comparative Example C1 was used with a range of propellants comprising trans-1234ze and propellant A-46. The different propellant blends tested are described in Table 4 below:
[0726] Table 4
[0727]
[0728] Cans containing 90 wt. % of the mousse formulation and 10 % of each of Propellants 1-9 were prepared and the foam was dispensed from each of the 9 cans onto a horizontal plate of black kraft paper and allowed to form for 3 minutes after dispensing, the dispenses being listed herein. Figure 4A middle.
[0729]
[0730] This experiment demonstrates the use of mousse formulations with propellants comprising a combination of trans-1234ze and A-46, wherein the weight ratio of trans-1234ze:A-46 is from about 7:3 to about 3:7, and even more preferably from about 7:3 to about 4:6, with a ratio of about 7:3 to about 5:5 being highly preferred. Specifically, these results demonstrate that formulations using preferred ratios of trans-1234ze and A-46 in a blend provide foams with unexpectedly high levels of performance in terms of foam shape, gloss, wetness, stability, and volume.
[0731] Additionally, cans containing 90% by weight of the mousse formulation and 10% of each of Propellants 1-9 were prepared, and foam was dispensed from each of the 9 cans onto a vertical plate of black kraft paper and allowed to form for 3 minutes after dispensing, the dispenses being listed herein. Figure 4A middle:
[0732] This experiment demonstrates that unexpected advantages in terms of excellent foam spreadability and stability are achieved with propellants comprising a combination of trans-1234ze and A-46, wherein the weight ratio of trans-1234ze:A-46 is from about 6:4 to about 4:6, and even more preferably from about 6:4 to about 5:5.
[0733] Comparative Example C5 - Sunscreen Mousse 10% A-46 Propellant
[0734] A sunshade mousse was prepared using the ingredients and amounts shown in Table 5 below, wherein all amounts are in weight percent:
[0735] Table C5 – Sunshade Mousse
[0736]
[0737]
[0738] The formulation is formed by first preparing an oil phase containing filters, beeswax, Tegoalkanol IC20, Arlacel 165, ganex v220, c12-15 alkyl benzoate, caprylic capric triglyceride at a temperature of 70°C-80°C, and mixing those components until uniform. The aqueous phase is then formed by adding water to a separate container and then dispersing Natrosol 250HX until uniform. The aqueous phase is then heated to 70°C-75°C, and the following components are then added: disodium edetate, chlorphenesin, propylene glycol, and polysorbate-20. The aqueous phase components are then mixed until uniform. Emulsification is achieved by adding the oil phase to the aqueous phase under homogenization until an opaque emulsion is formed.
[0739] The formulation was then charged to the can in an amount to produce about 20% headspace in the can based on the relative amount of propellant to be added as described below. The can was then sealed. A propellant consisting of A-46 was then added to the can in an amount to produce can contents consisting of 90% by weight of the formulation of Table C5 and 10% by weight of A-46 (Example C5A).
[0740] Additionally, foams made with higher levels of A-46 propellant had a significant adverse effect on the spreadability of the foam. Specifically, the foams were tested by dispensing onto the back of a user's hand (see Figure C5A ), the user then attempts to spread the formulation onto the skin (see Figure C5B and Figure C5C ).
[0741] like Figure C5A , Figure C5B and Figure C5CAs shown, this formulation with 10% A-46 as propellant performs very poorly from a spreadability perspective. Specifically, the foam does not spread evenly and results in large lumpy areas and leaves large areas where the formulation is not present on the skin.
[0742] Example 5 - Sunshade Mousse with 10% trans-1234ze Propellant
[0743] A sunscreen mousse formulation was prepared as described in Comparative Example 5 and combined with a propellant and dispensed as described in Comparative Example 5, except that the propellant used consisted of trans-1234ze so that the can had 10% by weight trans-1234ze. This foam was dispensed onto the back of the user's hand (see Figure 5A ), and the user can easily and satisfactorily spread the preparation on the skin (see Figure 5B and Figure 5C ).
[0744] Example 6 - Mousse Skin Cleansers with Propellants Containing Trans-1234ze and Different Surfactants
[0745] A skin mousse formulation was used to prepare and compare a series of mousse foams made using trans-1234ze as a propellant (in an amount of about 10% by weight of the formulation contents) with a series of different surfactants, the remainder being water. Jars containing the mousse formulations with 2.5%, 5%, and 10% by weight of the test surfactant were prepared, and foam was dispensed from each of the jars and the foam density was measured. The results are reported in Tables 6A and 6B below. Fig. 6A (where the first bar of each surfactant is 2.5%, the second bar is 5%, and the third bar is 10%).
[0746] Table 6A
[0747]
[0748] As can be seen from the above data, generally the foam density of a mousse increases as the surfactant concentration decreases. However, Applicants have unexpectedly discovered that a small, limited number of surfactants, when used in the mousse formulations of the present invention (including each of Mousses 1-23), provide an unexpected opposite result, namely, a decrease in foam density as the surfactant concentration decreases. This result is described herein in Figure 6B , which shows the foam volume generated for the same surfactant as reported in Table 6A (which is inversely proportional to the foam density) for surfactant concentrations of 2.5 wt%, 5 wt% and 10 wt%.
