Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a valve. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a valve that allows fluid flow to be easily and safely controlled as required. Background Art

[0002] A valve is a mechanical device that regulates, directs or controls the flow of fluids (e.g., gases, liquids, fluidized solids or slurries) by opening, closing or partially blocking various fluid passages. For example, valves can be used in fields, industries, and homes to control water for various purposes, such as controlling processes, irrigation, washing, etc.

[0003] However, there may be situations where a valve operating in uniform geometry or a standard design or construction may close a liquid passage relatively quickly or sometimes in an unsafe manner. Immediate closing or opening of the valve may not effectively reduce or check undesirable pressure surges. Strong pressure surges may affect various parts of the valve, sometimes leading to malfunctions or process upsets. This may lead to deformation or malfunction of various parts of the valve.

[0004] An example of a valve is provided in WIPO patent application WO 2004026721 (hereinafter referred to as the '721 reference). The '721 reference provides a diaphragm valve. The diaphragm valve comprises a slit diaphragm. The diaphragm valve also comprises a cap-shaped retaining element. The retaining element is associated with a receiving area of the diaphragm. The retaining element is connected to the diaphragm in a positive interlocking manner or in a material-fitting manner. The retaining element is formed inside the closure element so as to be retained on the peripheral outer edge side in an overlapping or locked manner. However, the '721 reference does not provide an ergonomic and user-friendly arrangement that allows a safe and vibration-free operation of the valve.

[0005] Another example of a valve is provided in US Pat. No. 3,379,406 (hereinafter referred to as the '406 reference). The '406 reference discloses a diaphragm pilot control valve. The valve includes a relatively thick seating member having a wedge-shaped cross-section.

[0006] Another example of a valve is provided in U.S. Pat. No. 5,299,775 (hereinafter referred to as the '775 reference). The '775 reference discloses a pilot-operated diaphragm valve. The valve includes a main control valve assembly engaged with a main valve seat. The main valve seat is inclined so that the main control valve assembly moves relatively uniformly upward or downward until the main control valve assembly contacts the inclined main valve seat.

[0007] Another example of a valve is provided in U.S. Publication No. 2013 / 0009086 (hereinafter referred to as the '086 reference). The '086 reference discloses an eccentric diaphragm irrigation valve. The valve includes a diaphragm having a valve seat engaging portion that cooperates with a valve seat to control flow through the valve. The diaphragm includes a mesh having an inlet side that is thicker than an outlet side of the mesh.

[0008] Another example of a valve is provided in US Publication No. 2015 / 0323081 (hereinafter referred to as the '081 reference). The '081 reference discloses a shutoff valve having a diaphragm that partially engages a valve seat to open and close the valve.

[0009] Another example of a valve is provided in U.S. Pat. No. 3,282,556 (hereinafter referred to as the '556 reference). The '556 reference discloses a pilot-controlled diaphragm valve of the type described above, wherein the valve closes against pressure and is held closed by equalization of unit pressures on opposite sides of the diaphragm. The valve includes a throttling button that is not subject to expansion to prevent the button from binding within the valve seat.

[0010] Another example of a valve is provided in US Publication No. 2015 / 0323081 (hereinafter referred to as the '081 reference). The '081 reference discloses a shutoff valve having a diaphragm that partially engages a valve seat to open and close the valve.

[0011] Therefore, there is a need for an improved valve that allows safe, convenient and trouble-free operation of the valve. Summary of the invention

[0012] In view of the above, an object of the present invention is to solve or at least reduce the disadvantages discussed above. This object is achieved at least in part by a valve. The valve is arranged in a liquid passage. The valve includes a valve body. The valve includes a valve cover that at least partially closes the valve body. The valve includes a valve seat arranged in the valve body. The valve also includes a diaphragm received on the valve seat. The diaphragm moves between an open position that allows liquid to flow through the liquid passage and a closed position that does not allow liquid to flow through the liquid passage. The valve includes an elastic element arranged between the valve body and the diaphragm. The elastic element biases the diaphragm in the closed position. The valve is characterized in that at least one of the diaphragm and the valve seat has an uneven cross-sectional profile. The uneven cross-sectional profile of either or both of the diaphragm and the reinforcement portion helps to optimize (usually delay) the closing time of the valve. This further helps to reduce the pressure / hydraulic shock involved during the opening / closing of the valve. Therefore, the present disclosure provides a simple, effective and shock-resistant opening and closing of the valve.

[0013] According to one embodiment of the invention, the elastic element is a compression spring. This helps to provide a well-defined position configuration for the diaphragm in the open and closed positions.

[0014] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the diaphragm includes a reinforcement portion, which can provide support and mechanical assistance to the diaphragm.

[0015] According to one embodiment of the invention, the reinforcement portion and the diaphragm form an integral part. This may provide strength to the valve. This may further result in less chance of rupture or damage to the valve.

[0016] According to one embodiment of the invention, at least one of the membrane and the reinforcement has a sawtooth shape. This may ensure that at least one of the membrane and the reinforcement may be provided with a desired unevenness for optimal operation of the valve.

[0017] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the reinforcement portion is made of a material having a higher strength relative to the material required to manufacture the diaphragm. This can allow the reinforcement portion to better handle the different movements of the diaphragm. In addition, the strength difference of the materials used for the reinforcement portion and the diaphragm can lead to better efficiency, service life and operational benefits.

[0018] According to one embodiment of the present invention, at least one of the diaphragm and the reinforcement portion is manufactured by a 2K molding process. The 2K molding process can contribute to cost reduction and process improvement. More particularly, this can also help reduce assembly time and related resources.

[0019] According to one embodiment of the invention, at least one of the membrane and the reinforcement is manufactured by 3D printing. The use of three-dimensional printing (or, 3D printing) can provide versatility in using different materials and shorter lead times in the manufacture and design of the membrane.

[0020] According to one embodiment of the invention, at least one of the diaphragm and the reinforcement is made of an elastomeric material. The elastomeric material can provide the diaphragm with characteristic features such as elasticity, flexibility, cost efficiency and some tolerance according to the requirements of ordinary users, such as heat resistance or vibration resistance.

[0021] According to one embodiment of the invention, the elastomeric material is silicon.Due to the inert nature of silicon, at least one of the diaphragm and the reinforcement portion may avoid sensitivity to corrosion, resulting in a relatively longer service life.

[0022] According to one embodiment of the invention, the membrane is adhesively bonded to the reinforcement part by means of an adhesive. The adhesive allows an ideal engagement of the membrane with the reinforcement part.

[0023] According to one embodiment of the invention, the reinforcing portion receives the diaphragm therein. The reinforcing portion provides support for the diaphragm, which further allows a desired movement (eg lifting) of the diaphragm.

[0024] According to one embodiment of the invention, the reinforcement portion rests centrally on the membrane. This allows better movement (eg lifting upwards) of the membrane, for example during actuation of a handle / button / switch.

[0025] According to one embodiment of the present invention, at least one of the diaphragm and the reinforced portion allows a portion of the liquid to flow through the liquid channel. This allows the rate of fluid flow in the valve body to be easily controlled.

[0026] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the membrane or reinforcement part is manufactured by three-dimensional printing. The use of three-dimensional printing (or 3D printing) provides versatility in using different materials and shorter delivery time in the manufacture and design of hose boxes, bracket components, retaining components, rod components and / or anchor components.

[0027] According to one embodiment of the present invention, a data file with pre-stored instructions is provided to the user of the valve to print the diaphragm or reinforcement of the valve by a three-dimensional printer. In this way, a variety of customization options can be provided for the diaphragm or reinforcement.

[0028] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the membrane or reinforcement portion is presented in a digital format. Among other considerations such as security, user convenience, etc., the membrane or reinforcement portion may be available in a digital format that is compatible with existing technologies.

[0029] Other features and aspects of the present invention will become apparent from the following description and accompanying drawings. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

In fact, components can be oriented in any direction, so the terms should be understood to cover such variations unless otherwise explicitly specified.

[0042] Figure 1 A cross-sectional view of a valve 100 is shown. The valve 100 of the present disclosure is a mechanical device that allows the flow of a fluid to be directed, regulated or controlled by opening, closing or partially blocking a fluid passage. The valve 100 can be used in fields, industries, homes to control water for various purposes, such as controlling a process, irrigation, washing, etc. The valve 100 is disposed in a fluid passage 102. The fluid passage 102 is a passage for a fluid flow ( Figure 4104). The liquid channel 102 includes an inlet 104. The inlet 104 can be connected to any water source, such as but not limited to a faucet, a water tank, and a hose. In addition, the liquid channel 102 includes an outlet 106. The outlet 106 can allow the liquid received from the inlet 104 to be ejected. The liquid channel 102 can be replaced by any other channel, such as a gas channel, a slurry channel, a channel for fluidizing solids, etc. The liquid channel 102 can be widely used in outdoor or indoor applications, such as gardens, buildings, kitchens, parks, etc.

[0043] Figure 2 A detailed front cross-sectional view of a valve 100 disposed in a liquid passage 102 is shown. The valve 100 includes a valve body 110. The valve 100 also includes a valve cover 112. The valve cover 112 at least partially encloses the valve body 110. A valve seat 114 is disposed within the valve body 110. The valve 100 also includes a diaphragm 116. The diaphragm 116 has an uneven cross-sectional profile. In this embodiment, the diaphragm 116 including roll-off regions 117', 117" illustrates the uneven cross-sectional profile. The roll-off regions 117', 117" are different from each other. The roll-off regions 117', 117" form an uneven surface. For example, relative to the roll-off region 117", the roll-off region 117' appears to protrude more. In addition, the diaphragm 116 is received on the valve seat 114. The valve seat 114 also includes a right shoulder 115'. In addition, the valve seat 114 includes a left shoulder 115 ″. An elastic element 118 is disposed between the valve body 110 and the diaphragm 116 .

[0044] In this embodiment, the elastic element 118 is a compression spring, however, the elastic element 118 can be any elastic device (e.g., a bellows) as used or known in the art. In other embodiments, the elastic element 118 can be a tension spring, a torsion spring, and a constant force spring. The elastic element 118 helps to open and close the device (in the open position and the closed position, respectively). Figure 4 and Figure 5 ) provides a clear position structure for the diaphragm 116.

[0045] like Figure 2 As shown, the diaphragm 116 includes a reinforcement portion 120. The reinforcement portion 120 provides mechanical assistance to the diaphragm 116. The reinforcement portion 120 allows for better movement (e.g., upward lifting) of the diaphragm 116, such as during actuation of a handle / button / switch. The reinforcement portion 120 receives the diaphragm 116 therein. The reinforcement portion 120 provides support for the diaphragm 116, which further allows for the desired movement (e.g., lifting) of the diaphragm 116.

[0046] Figure 3An exploded view of the diaphragm 116 of the valve 100 is shown. The reinforcement portion 120 can have some protrusions 122, which can cooperate with the grooves (not shown) of the diaphragm 116. In some embodiments, at least one of the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120 can be manufactured by a 2K molding process. The 2K molding process can contribute to cost reduction and process improvement. More particularly, this can also help reduce assembly time and related resources. In some other embodiments, the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120 can be manufactured by any of the processes such as blow molding, compression molding, and rotational molding.

[0047] At least one of the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement 120 can be made of an elastomeric material. The elastomeric material provides the diaphragm 116 with characteristic features such as elasticity, flexibility, and cost efficiency. The elastomeric material can also provide some tolerance, such as heat resistance or vibration resistance, according to the requirements of ordinary users. In the present embodiment, the elastomeric material is silicon. Due to the inert nature of silicon, at least one of the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement 120 can avoid sensitivity to corrosion, thereby obtaining a relatively longer service life. In other embodiments, the elastomeric material can be natural rubber, synthetic rubber, nitrile rubber, polyurethane rubber, chloroprene rubber, EVA rubber, etc.

[0048] The reinforcement portion 120 can be made of a material with a higher strength relative to the material required to manufacture the diaphragm 116. The reinforcement portion 120 can be made of any metal, such as iron, steel, nickel, aluminum, etc. This can allow the reinforcement portion 120 to better handle the different movements of the diaphragm 116. In addition, the strength difference of the materials used for the reinforcement portion 120 and the diaphragm 116 can lead to better efficiency, service life, and other operational benefits. The diaphragm 116 can be removably assembled with the reinforcement portion 120.

[0049] In some embodiments, the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120 can be manufactured in a combined form by a 2K molding process, thereby producing an integral component. This can provide strength to the valve 100. This can further result in less chance of cracking or damage to the valve 100. Additionally or alternatively, the diaphragm 116 can be manufactured by a 2K molding process, and then the completed diaphragm 116 can be positioned on the reinforcement portion 120 (also prepared by 2K silicon molding). In other embodiments, the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120 can be assembled after being manufactured by different molding processes.

[0050] The diaphragm 116 can be adhesively bonded to the reinforcement portion 120 by an adhesive. The adhesive can ideally bond the diaphragm 116 to the reinforcement portion 120. The diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120 can be bonded by using a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). In other embodiments, the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120 can be connected by using other adhesive materials such as liquid silicone rubber (LSR). The diaphragm 116 can also be polymerically bonded to the reinforcement portion 120. In other embodiments, the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120 can be assembled by a snap connection. In some embodiments, the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120 can be glued, threaded, fixed with threads, etc. In other embodiments, the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120 can be magnetically connected.

[0051] In some embodiments, at least one of the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement 120 can be manufactured using any material, such as a polymer, metal, plastic, etc. This provides the diaphragm 116 with characteristic features such as flexibility, cost efficiency, heat resistance, etc. The diaphragm 116 can be manufactured using any process, such as casting, molding, forging, manufacturing, etc. In other embodiments, the diaphragm 116 can be manufactured by three-dimensional printing (also known as additive manufacturing or 3D printing). The use of three-dimensional printing (optionally, 3D printing) provides versatility in the use of different materials in the manufacture and design of the diaphragm 116 and short delivery time.

[0052] In the present embodiment, the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement 120 can operate in a preferred range of about 0.5 to 16 bar. In some applications, the pressure can fluctuate to about 50 bar. In addition, the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement 120 can work best in a certain temperature range (e.g., 0-60° C.). In addition, the storage temperature of the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement 120 can be -20° C. to 60° C. The diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement 120 can be vibration-resistant.

[0053] Figure 4 A cross-sectional view of the valve 100 in an open position is shown. The diaphragm 116 moves between an open position and a closed position. The open position allows a liquid flow F to pass through the liquid channel 102. The valve 100 may be provided with a handle or an electromechanical device (not shown). When the handle is actuated, the reinforcement portion 120 may lift the diaphragm 116 a certain distance (preferably 2.5 mm in some embodiments). Lifting the diaphragm 116 by means of the reinforcement portion 120 allows the liquid flow F to pass through the liquid channel 102. The elastic element 118 is not shown for clarity and explanation.

[0054] Figure 5A cross-sectional view of the valve 100 is shown in a closed position. In the closed position, the valve 100 does not allow liquid flow F through the liquid passage 102. The valve 100 remains in the closed position until the handle is not engaged or acted upon.

[0055] In other embodiments, the button / switch may be provided with a valve 100. When the button / switch is actuated, the valve mechanism operates. The initial actuation of the button / switch may allow fluid in the liquid passage 102 to enter through the inlet 104. This may further pressurize the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement 120. The pressurized reinforcement 120 may lift the diaphragm 116 upward, thereby allowing fluid to flow. Upon a second actuation, the valve 100 may close, thereby resisting the flow of the liquid.

[0056] In some embodiments, at least one of the diaphragm 116 and the reinforced portion 120 allows a portion of the liquid flow F to pass through the liquid passage 102. This allows the rate of fluid flow within the valve body 110 to be easily controlled.

[0057] In some other embodiments, the valve 100 may be automatically controlled. The valve 100 may be provided with a control unit. The control unit may be configured to actuate an actuator / sensor of the valve 100. Furthermore, actuation of the actuator / sensor may allow actuation or sensing of the state of the liquid flow F within the valve 100 (i.e., open and closed positions).

[0058] Fig. 6A A perspective view of the diaphragm 116 is shown. The diaphragm 116 can have any of the shapes such as circular, oval, etc. The reinforcement portion 120 can be centrally resting on the diaphragm 116. The diaphragm 116 shows a non-uniform cross-sectional profile. In other embodiments, the non-uniform cross-sectional profile can be defined as a sawtooth configuration of the diaphragm 116. In one embodiment, the central portion of the diaphragm 116, particularly the section resting on the valve seat 114, may have an increased wall thickness compared to its roll-off region 117', 177". This will allow the diaphragm to improve its absorption properties in the event of a hydraulic shock.

[0059] Figure 6B A cross-sectional view of a diaphragm 116 having a non-uniform cross-sectional profile is shown. The non-uniform cross-sectional profile of the diaphragm 116 can be described by roll-off regions 117', 117" of the diaphragm 116. More particularly, the roll-off regions 117', 117" can have different geometries or wall thicknesses. An elastic element 118 is engaged with the reinforcement portion 120. The elastic element 118 biases the diaphragm 116 in the closed position. For clarity and explanation, the elastic element 118 is not shown in some embodiments.

[0060] Figure 6CA side view of the diaphragm 116 is shown. The diaphragm 116 has roll-off areas 117', 117". In some other embodiments, the roll-off areas 117', 117" of the diaphragm 116 can be obtained by using some accessories / attachments to the diaphragm 116 to provide an uneven surface. The attachment / attachment can be removably connected to the diaphragm of a conventional valve (not shown). The attachment / attachment can be connected temporarily or permanently. The temporary connection can be accomplished by gluing, threading, threading, etc. The permanent connection can be accomplished by welding, riveting, and any other manufacturing technique used or known in the art.

[0061] The non-uniform cross-sectional profile can be achieved by different lengths of the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120. The non-uniform cross-sectional profile of the diaphragm 116 can produce a non-uniform axial closing movement. The non-uniform cross-sectional profile of the diaphragm 116 can increase the closing time of the valve 100. Therefore, the increase in the closing time of the valve 100 can ultimately lead to a reduction in hydraulic pressure / pressure surges.

[0062] Figure 7 A cross-sectional view of the valve seat 114 is shown. The elastic element 118 is not included for the sake of clarity and explanation. The valve seat 114 may also have a non-uniform geometry to match or lock with the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120. The right shoulder 115' of the valve seat 114 includes a first profile A. In addition, the left shoulder 115" includes a second profile B. In this embodiment, the first profile A is a peak-like structure. In addition, the second profile B is also a peak-like structure. The first profile A includes a peak that is more inclined relative to the second profile B. The right shoulder 115' and the left shoulder 115" of the valve seat 114 may include the first profile A and the second profile B, respectively, or may have different geometries to support or supplement the effect of the non-uniform cross-sectional profile. In some embodiments, the first profile A and the second profile B may include some other structures that provide the valve seat 114 with a non-uniform geometry.

[0063] Additionally or alternatively, the right shoulder 115' and the left shoulder 115" of the valve seat 114 may have different wall thicknesses, lengths, or widths. The shape of the valve seat 114 may be one or more of a circle, an ellipse, etc. In other embodiments, the valve seat 114 may have a sawtooth shape. In yet another embodiment, the valve seat 114 may also have a removably attached accessory / attachment that may allow a conventional valve seat to be converted to the valve seat 114 of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, a conventional valve seat may be provided with a rubber extension / protrusion that may engage with the diaphragm 116 and the reinforcement portion 120 during operation.

[0064] In the drawings and specification, preferred embodiments and examples of the present invention have been disclosed, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for the purpose of limiting the scope of the invention set forth in the appended claims.
