AI Technical Summary
In broadband array operation, variations in array response across carrier bandwidths lead to reduced signal reliability and performance, especially in the millimeter band, and existing technologies struggle to effectively address this issue.
By configuring multiple signal sets, such as SSB and CSI-RS, in different sub-bands of the carrier bandwidth, the UE measures the signal measurements and determines the corresponding communication beam set to adapt to the channel characteristics of different sub-bands and select the appropriate communication beam for communication.
It improves the accuracy of channel estimation, enhances power consumption and spectral efficiency, promotes highly reliable communication, and reduces signal loss and performance degradation.

Technical Field
[0003] The following relates generally to wireless communications and, more particularly, to techniques for supporting broadband array operations.
[0004] background
[0005] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content, such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcasting, etc. These systems may be able to support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). Examples of such multiple access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems (such as long term evolution (LTE) systems, advanced LTE (LTE-A) systems, or LTE-A Pro systems), and fifth generation (5G) systems, which may be referred to as new radio (NR) systems. These systems may use various technologies, such as code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), or discrete Fourier transform extended orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM). A wireless multiple access communication system may include one or more base stations or one or more network access nodes, each base station or network access node simultaneously supporting the communication of multiple communication devices, which may be referred to as user equipment (UE) in addition.
[0006] Some wireless communication systems may support broadband array operations. That is, some wireless communication systems may support operations using a high transmission bandwidth-center frequency ratio (e.g., greater than five percent, ten percent, or some other threshold percentage). As a result, communication devices can operate using a large carrier bandwidth. In addition, these communication devices may support communications in millimeter bands (e.g., from 30 gigahertz (GHz) to 300 GHz). In some cases, broadband communications in millimeter bands or other radio frequency spectrum bands may suffer from reduced reliability due to changes in array responses across carrier bandwidths. For example, a wireless device may use a communication beam to optimize broadband communications for the center frequency of the carrier bandwidth. However, due to the large carrier bandwidth and communication beams that operate differently at different frequencies, signals transmitted at various frequencies across the carrier bandwidth (e.g., relatively far from the center frequency) may suffer from performance degradation and reduced reliability.
[0007] Overview
[0008] The described technology relates to improved methods, systems, devices and apparatuses that support technology for supporting wideband array operations. In general, the described technology provides reliable array responses across wideband carrier bandwidths. In some wireless communication systems that support wideband operation, a base station may configure a set of transmission instances for a set of signals distributed across a carrier bandwidth (e.g., for a wideband carrier including a set of subbands). At least one transmission instance in the set of transmission instances may be configured in each subband in the set of subbands for the carrier bandwidth. The base station may, for example, use a set of transmit beams to transmit the set of signals to a UE in a configured transmission instance. These signals may be examples of synchronization signal blocks (SSBs), channel state information reference signals (CSI-RSs), or any other beam-specific signals.
[0009] The UE may receive the set of signals distributed across the carrier bandwidth, and may measure a set of signal measurements corresponding to the subband set for the signals. Based on the signal measurements, the UE may determine a set of communication beams for the subband set (e.g., beams that differ from subband to subband). The UE may communicate with the base station in the carrier bandwidth based on the determined set of communication beams. For example, if the array response varies significantly across the carrier bandwidth for one or more of the communication beams (e.g., greater than a threshold amount), the UE may communicate with the base station using different pairs of communication beams in different subbands of the carrier bandwidth. Alternatively, if the array response remains relatively consistent across the carrier bandwidth (e.g., varies less than a threshold amount), the UE may communicate with the base station using the same pair of communication beams for the entire carrier bandwidth.
[0010] A method for wireless communication at a UE is described. The method may include: receiving a signal set across a carrier bandwidth including a subband set from a base station, wherein a first signal in the signal set is received in a first subband in the subband set, and a second signal in the signal set is received in a second subband in the subband set that is different from the first subband; measuring a signal measurement value set corresponding to the subband set for the signal set; determining a communication beam set for the subband set based on the signal measurement value set, wherein a first communication beam in the communication beam set is determined for the first subband and a second communication beam different from the first communication beam is determined for the second subband; and communicating with the base station in the carrier bandwidth based on the determined communication beam set.

These instructions may be executable by the processor so that the device: receives a signal set across a carrier bandwidth including a subband set from a base station, wherein a first signal in the signal set is received in a first subband in the subband set, and a second signal in the signal set is received in a second subband in the subband set that is different from the first subband; measures a signal measurement value set corresponding to the subband set for the signal set; determines a communication beam set for the subband set based on the signal measurement value set, wherein a first communication beam in the communication beam set is determined for the first subband and a second communication beam different from the first communication beam is determined for the second subband; and communicates with the base station in the carrier bandwidth based on the determined communication beam set.

[0077] Detailed Description
[0078] Some wireless communication systems may include communication devices, such as UEs and base stations (e.g., evolved Node Bs (eNBs), next generation Node Bs, or Gigabit Node Bs (any of which may be referred to as gNBs), or some other base stations) that may support multiple radio access technologies (RATs). Examples of RATs include 4G systems (such as LTE systems) and 5G systems, which may be referred to as NR systems. In some cases, the UEs and base stations may support wideband array operations. That is, the UEs and base stations may communicate on one or more carriers having a relatively high carrier bandwidth-to-center frequency ratio (e.g., greater than five percent, ten percent, or some other threshold percentage). In addition, in some examples, the UE may perform channel estimation on one or more physical channels to maintain a reliable and efficient communication link between the UE and the base station.
[0079] In some cases, a millimeter wave (mmW) system operating with a large carrier bandwidth may experience changes in array response across the carrier bandwidth. For example, a base station or UE or both may use a communication beam to optimize wideband communications for a center frequency of the carrier bandwidth. However, due to the large carrier bandwidth and the communication beams operating differently at different frequencies, signals transmitted at various frequencies across the carrier bandwidth (e.g., relatively far from the center frequency) may potentially suffer significant degradation. As a result, the channel estimation performance of the UE for the wideband carrier may be less reliable (e.g., compared to communications over a narrower carrier bandwidth), and the wireless communication system may suffer performance degradation.
[0080] In order to support reliable transmission for broadband array operation, the base station can configure multiple transmission instances for signal sets (e.g., SSB, CSI-RS, or other beam-specific signals) across different subbands of the carrier bandwidth to support beam selection in different subbands of the carrier bandwidth. For example, the base station can configure a first signal in a first subband of the carrier bandwidth, a second signal in a second subband of the carrier bandwidth, and so on. The base station can transmit the signal set to the UE in multiple transmission instances. The UE can receive the signal set and use these signals to determine the characteristics of each subband of the carrier bandwidth. For example, the UE can measure a signal measurement set (e.g., reference signal received power (RSRP), reference signal received quality (RSRQ), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), or any other signal measurement) for each signal in the received signal set. Each signal measurement can correspond to a subband of the carrier bandwidth, and the UE can use the subband to determine the communication beam for the corresponding subband. Based on the signal measurement set, the UE can determine the communication beam to be used for each subband. For example, the UE may determine a first communication beam for a first subband based on a signal measurement set associated with a first signal received in the first subband, and determine a second communication beam for a second subband based on a signal measurement set associated with a second signal received in the second subband.
[0081] In some examples, the UE can determine the communication beam to be used for each subband by comparing signal measurements of different signals. For example, the UE can compare a first signal measurement of a first signal received in a first subband with a second signal measurement of a second signal received in a second subband, and calculate the difference between the first signal measurement and the second signal measurement. If the difference is greater than or equal to a threshold (i.e., the beam performance changes significantly from the first subband to the second subband), the UE can select different communication beams for communication in the first subband and the second subband. For example, the UE can select a first communication beam for communication in the first subband and select a second communication beam for communication in the second subband. Alternatively, if the difference is less than a threshold, the UE can save power by using the same communication beam for a carrier bandwidth (e.g., including the first subband and the second subband).
[0082] The UE may transmit a report including information for each corresponding subband of the carrier bandwidth to the base station. For example, the UE may transmit a report indicating a preferred communication beam for each subband of the carrier bandwidth. The base station may receive the report and may determine a communication beam to be used for each subband. Based on the determined communication beam (e.g., a communication beam pair between the UE and the base station that differs by subband), the UE and the base station may communicate in the carrier bandwidth.
[0083] Various aspects of the subject matter described in the present disclosure may be implemented to achieve one or more of the following potential advantages, among others. The techniques employed by the UE may provide benefits and enhancements to the operation of the UE. For example, the operations performed by the UE may provide improvements to channel estimation operations. In some examples, using multiple communication beams to communicate with a base station in different subbands across a carrier bandwidth may allow the UE to more accurately estimate the channel characteristics of each subband of the carrier bandwidth. In some other examples, using multiple communication beams to communicate with a base station in different subbands across a carrier bandwidth may provide improvements in power consumption, spectral efficiency, and in some examples, may facilitate highly reliable communications, among other benefits.
[0084] Aspects of the present disclosure are initially described in the context of wireless communication systems. Aspects of the present disclosure are subsequently described in the context of carrier schemes and process flows. Aspects of the present disclosure are further illustrated and described by and with reference to diagrams and flow charts related to optimization of broadband array operations in, for example, mmW systems.
[0085] Figure 1 An example of a wireless communication system 100 supporting techniques for supporting broadband array operations in accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. The wireless communication system 100 may include one or more base stations 105, one or more UEs 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be an LTE network, an advanced LTE (LTE-A) network, an LTE-A Pro network, or an NR network. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support enhanced broadband communications, ultra-reliable (e.g., mission-critical) communications, low latency communications, communications with low-cost and low-complexity devices, or any combination thereof.
[0086] The base stations 105 may be dispersed throughout a geographic area to form the wireless communication system 100, and may be different forms of devices or devices with different capabilities. The base stations 105 and the UEs 115 may communicate wirelessly via one or more communication links 125. Each base station 105 may provide a coverage area 110 over which the UEs 115 and the base stations 105 may establish one or more communication links 125. The coverage area 110 may be an example of a geographic area over which the base stations 105 and the UEs 115 may support communication of signals according to one or more radio access technologies.
[0087] The UEs 115 may be dispersed throughout the coverage area 110 of the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 may be stationary or mobile, or stationary and mobile at different times. The UEs 115 may be different forms of devices or devices with different capabilities. Figure 1Some example UEs 115 are illustrated in FIG. 1. The UEs 115 described herein may be capable of communicating with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115, base stations 105, or network equipment (e.g., core network nodes, relay devices, integrated access and backhaul (IAB) nodes, or other network equipment), such as Figure 1 as shown in .
[0088] Each base station 105 may communicate with the core network 130, or communicate with each other, or both. For example, the base station 105 may interface with the core network 130 via one or more backhaul links 120 (e.g., via S1, N2, N3 or other interfaces). The base stations 105 may communicate with each other directly (e.g., directly between the base stations 105), or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 130), or directly and indirectly on the backhaul link 120 (e.g., via X2, Xn or other interfaces). In some examples, the backhaul link 120 may be or include one or more wireless links.
[0089] One or more of the base stations 105 described herein may include or may be referred to by a person of ordinary skill in the art as a base transceiver station, a radio base station, an access point, a radio transceiver, a B node, an eNB, a next-generation B node, or a gigabit B node (any of which may be referred to as a gNB), a home B node, a home evolved B node, or other suitable terminology.
[0090] UE 115 may include or may be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or some other suitable term, where a "device" may also be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, etc. UE 115 may also include or may be referred to as a personal electronic device, such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a personal computer. In some examples, UE 115 may include or be referred to as a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or a machine type communication (MTC) device, etc., which may be implemented in various objects such as electrical appliances or vehicles, meters, etc.
[0091] The UE 115 described herein may be capable of communicating with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115, which may sometimes act as relays, as well as base stations 105 and network equipment including macro eNBs or gNBs, small cell eNBs or gNBs, relay base stations, etc. Figure 1 as shown in .
[0092] The UE 115 and the base station 105 may communicate wirelessly with each other via one or more communication links 125 on one or more carriers. The term "carrier" may refer to a set of radio frequency spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure for supporting the communication link 125. For example, a carrier for the communication link 125 may include a portion of a radio frequency spectrum band (e.g., a bandwidth portion (BWP)) that operates according to one or more physical layer channels for a given radio access technology (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR). Each physical layer channel may carry acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals, system information), control signaling for coordinating carrier operations, user data, or other signaling. The wireless communication system 100 may support communication with the UE 115 using carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. The UE 115 may be configured to have multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers according to a carrier aggregation configuration. Carrier aggregation may be used in conjunction with both frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD) component carriers.
[0093] In some examples (e.g., in a carrier aggregation configuration), a carrier may also have acquisition signaling or control signaling that coordinates the operation of other carriers. A carrier may be associated with a frequency channel (e.g., an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Terrestrial Radio Access (E-UTRA) Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (EARFCN)) and may be located according to a channel grid for discovery by UE 115. A carrier may operate in a standalone mode in which initial acquisition and connection may be made by UE 115 via the carrier, or a carrier may operate in a non-standalone mode in which a connection is anchored using a different carrier (e.g., a different carrier of the same or different radio access technology).
[0094] The communication link 125 shown in the wireless communication system 100 may include an uplink transmission from the UE 115 to the base station 105, or a downlink transmission from the base station 105 to the UE 115. A carrier may carry downlink or uplink communications (e.g., in an FDD mode), or may be configured to carry both downlink and uplink communications (e.g., in a TDD mode).
[0095] A carrier may be associated with a particular bandwidth of a radio frequency spectrum, and in some examples, the carrier bandwidth may be referred to as a "system bandwidth" of the carrier or wireless communication system 100. For example, the carrier bandwidth may be one of several determined bandwidths (e.g., 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, or 80 megahertz (MHz)) of a carrier of a particular radio access technology. Devices (e.g., base stations 105, UEs 115, or both) of the wireless communication system 100 may have a hardware configuration that supports communications on a particular carrier bandwidth, or may be configurable to support communications on one of a set of carrier bandwidths. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may include a base station 105 or UE 115 that supports simultaneous communications via carriers associated with multiple carrier bandwidths. In some examples, each served UE 115 may be configured to operate on a portion (e.g., subband, BWP) or all of a carrier bandwidth.
[0096] The signal waveform transmitted on the carrier may include multiple subcarriers (e.g., using multi-carrier modulation (MCM) techniques, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM)). In a system using MCM technology, a resource element may include a code element period (e.g., the duration of a modulation code element) and a subcarrier, where the code element period and the subcarrier spacing are inversely related. The number of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme, the code rate of the modulation scheme, or both). Thus, the more resource elements received by UE 115 and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate of UE 115 can be. Wireless communication resources may refer to a combination of radio frequency spectrum resources, time resources, and spatial resources (e.g., spatial layers or beams), and the use of multiple spatial layers can further improve the data rate or data integrity of communication with UE 115.
[0097] One or more parameter designs for a carrier may be supported, where the parameter designs may include subcarrier spacing (Δf) and cyclic prefixes. A carrier may be divided into one or more BWPs with the same or different parameter designs. In some examples, a UE 115 may be configured with multiple BWPs. In some examples, a single BWP for a carrier may be active at a given time, and communications for a UE 115 may be limited to the one or more active BWPs.
[0098] The time interval of the base station 105 or the UE 115 can be expressed as a multiple of a basic time unit, and the basic time unit can be, for example, a sampling period T s =1 / (Δf max ·Nf) seconds, where Δf max It can represent the maximum supported subcarrier spacing, and N fThe maximum supported discrete Fourier transform (DFT) size may be indicated. Time intervals of communication resources may be organized according to radio frames, each having a specified duration (e.g., 10 milliseconds (ms)). Each radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) (e.g., ranging from 0 to 1023).
[0099] Each frame may include a plurality of consecutively numbered subframes or time slots, and each subframe or time slot may have the same duration. In some examples, a frame may be divided into subframes (e.g., in the time domain), and each subframe may be further divided into a number of time slots. Alternatively, each frame may include a variable number of time slots, and the number of time slots may depend on the subcarrier spacing. Each time slot may include a number of code element periods (e.g., depending on the length of the cyclic prefix added before each code element period). In some wireless communication systems 100, a time slot may be further divided into a plurality of mini-time slots containing one or more code elements. Excluding the cyclic prefix, each code element period may contain one or more (e.g., N f The duration of a symbol period may depend on the subcarrier spacing or the operating band.
[0100] A subframe, slot, mini-slot, or symbol may be the smallest scheduling unit (e.g., in the time domain) of the wireless communication system 100 and may be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI). In some examples, the TTI duration (e.g., the number of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable. Additionally or alternatively, the smallest scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 may be dynamically selected (e.g., in bursts of shortened TTIs (sTTIs)).
[0101] Physical channels may be multiplexed on a carrier according to various techniques. Physical control channels and physical data channels may be multiplexed on a downlink carrier, for example, using one or more of a time division multiplexing (TDM) technique, a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique, or a hybrid TDM-FDM technique. A control region (e.g., a control resource set (CORESET)) for a physical control channel may be defined by a number of symbol periods and may extend across a system bandwidth or a subset of a system bandwidth of a carrier. One or more control regions (e.g., CORESETs) may be configured for a set of UEs 115. For example, one or more of the UEs 115 may monitor or search a control region for control information according to one or more search space sets, and each search space set may include one or more control channel candidates in one or more aggregation levels arranged in a cascaded manner. An aggregation level for a control channel candidate may refer to the number of control channel resources (e.g., control channel elements (CCEs)) associated with coded information for a control information format having a given payload size. The search space sets may include a common search space set configured for transmitting control information to multiple UEs 115 and a UE-specific search space set for transmitting control information to a specific UE 115 .
[0102] Each base station 105 may provide communication coverage via one or more cells (e.g., macro cells, small cells, hot spots, or other types of cells, or any combination thereof). The term "cell" may refer to a logical communication entity used to communicate with a base station 105 (e.g., on a carrier), and may be associated with an identifier (e.g., a physical cell identifier (PCID), a virtual cell identifier (VCID), or other) used to distinguish adjacent cells. In some examples, a cell may also refer to a geographic coverage area 110 or a portion of a geographic coverage area 110 (e.g., a sector) on which a logical communication entity operates. The range of such a cell may range from a smaller area (e.g., a structure, a subset of a structure) to a larger area depending on various factors (such as the capabilities of the base station 105). For example, a cell may be or include a building, a subset of a building, or an external space between or overlapping a geographic coverage area 110, as well as other examples.
[0103] A macro cell generally covers a relatively large geographic area (e.g., several kilometers in radius) and may allow unrestricted access to UEs 115 that have service subscriptions with a network provider that supports the macro cell. A small cell may be associated with a lower power base station 105 (compared to a macro cell), and the small cell may operate in the same or different (e.g., licensed, unlicensed) frequency band as the macro cell. A small cell may provide unrestricted access to UEs 115 that have service subscriptions with a network provider, or may provide restricted access to UEs 115 associated with the small cell (e.g., UEs 115 in a closed subscriber group (CSG), UEs 115 associated with users in a home or office). A base station 105 may support one or more cells and may also support communications on one or more cells using one or more component carriers.
[0104] In some examples, a carrier may support multiple cells, and different cells may be configured according to different protocol types (e.g., MTC, narrowband IoT (NB-IoT), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB)) that may provide access to different types of devices.
[0105] In some examples, base stations 105 may be mobile and, therefore, provide communication coverage for mobile geographic coverage areas 110. In some examples, different geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, but the different geographic coverage areas 110 may be supported by the same base station 105. In other examples, overlapping geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by different base stations 105. The wireless communication system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous network in which different types of base stations 105 provide coverage for various geographic coverage areas 110 using the same or different radio access technologies.
[0106] The wireless communication system 100 may support synchronous or asynchronous operation. For synchronous operation, the base stations 105 may have similar frame timing, and transmissions from different base stations 105 may be approximately aligned in time. For asynchronous operation, the base stations 105 may have different frame timing, and transmissions from different base stations 105 may not be aligned in time in some examples. The techniques described herein may be used for synchronous or asynchronous operation.
[0107] Some UEs 115, such as MTC or IoT devices, may be low-cost or low-complexity devices and may provide automated communication between machines (e.g., via machine-to-machine (M2M) communication). M2M communication or MTC may refer to data communication technology that allows devices to communicate with each other or with a base station 105 without human intervention. In some examples, M2M communication or MTC may include communications from devices that integrate sensors or meters to measure or capture information and relay such information to a central server or application that utilizes the information or presents the information to a person interacting with the application. Some UEs 115 may be designed to collect information or implement automated behavior of machines or other devices. Examples of applications for MTC devices include: smart metering, inventory monitoring, water level monitoring, equipment monitoring, health care monitoring, field survival monitoring, weather and geographic event monitoring, queue management and tracking, remote security sensing, physical access control, and transaction-based commercial charging.
[0108] Some UEs 115 may be configured to employ a reduced power consumption mode of operation, such as half-duplex communication (e.g., a mode that supports unidirectional communication via transmission or reception but not simultaneous transmission and reception). In some examples, half-duplex communication may be performed with a reduced peak rate. Other power saving techniques for UE 115 include entering a power saving deep sleep mode when not engaged in active communications, operating on a limited bandwidth (e.g., according to narrowband communications), or a combination of these techniques. For example, some UEs 115 may be configured to operate using a narrowband protocol type that is associated with a defined portion or range (e.g., a subcarrier or resource block (RB) set) within a carrier, within a guard band of a carrier, or outside a carrier.
[0109] The wireless communication system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable communication or low latency communication or various combinations thereof. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) or mission-critical communication. UE 115 may be designed to support ultra-reliable, low latency or critical functions (e.g., mission-critical functions). Ultra-reliable communication may include private communication or group communication, and may be supported by one or more mission-critical services (such as mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT), mission-critical video (MCVideo), or mission-critical data (MCData). Support for mission-critical functions may include prioritization of services, and mission-critical services may be used for public safety or general commercial applications. The terms ultra-reliable, low latency, critical mission, and ultra-reliable low latency may be used interchangeably herein.
[0110] In some examples, UE 115 may also be able to communicate directly with other UE 115 over a device-to-device (D2D) communication link 135 (e.g., using a peer-to-peer (P2P) or D2D protocol). One or more UEs 115 utilizing D2D communication may be within a geographic coverage area 110 of a base station 105. Other UEs 115 in such a group may be outside the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105, or may not be able to receive transmissions from the base station 105 for other reasons. In some examples, each group of UEs 115 communicating via D2D communication may utilize a one-to-many (1:M) system, in which each UE 115 transmits to each other UE 115 in the group. In some examples, the base station 105 facilitates the scheduling of resources for D2D communication. In other cases, D2D communication is performed between each UE 115 without involving the base station 105.
[0111] In some systems, the D2D communication link 135 can be an example of a communication channel (such as a sidelink communication channel) between vehicles (e.g., UE 115). In some examples, the vehicles can communicate using vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, or some combination of these communications. The vehicles can signal information related to traffic conditions, signal scheduling, weather, safety, emergency situations, or any other information related to the V2X system. In some examples, vehicles in the V2X system can communicate with roadside infrastructure (such as roadside units), or with the network, or both via one or more network nodes (e.g., base station 105) using vehicle-to-network (V2N) communications.
[0112] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) or a 5G core (5GC), and the EPC or 5GC may include at least one control plane entity (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME), an access and mobility management function (AMF)) for managing access and mobility, and at least one user plane entity (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW), a packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW), or a user plane function (UPF)) for routing packets or interconnecting to an external network. The control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management of UE 115 served by a base station 105 associated with the core network 130. User IP packets may be delivered via a user plane entity, which may provide IP address allocation and other functions. The user plane entity may be connected to a network operator IP service 150. Operator IP services 150 may include access to the Internet, an intranet, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), or packet-switched streaming services.
[0113] Some network devices (such as base stations 105) may include subcomponents, such as access network entities 140, which may be examples of access node controllers (ANCs). Each access network entity 140 may communicate with each UE 115 through one or more other access network transport entities 145, which may be referred to as radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission / reception points (TRPs). Each access network transport entity 145 may include one or more antenna panels. In some configurations, the various functions of each access network entity 140 or base station 105 may be distributed across various network devices (e.g., radio heads and ANCs) or merged into a single network device (e.g., base station 105).
[0114] The wireless communication system 100 may operate using one or more frequency bands, typically in the range of 300 megahertz (MHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). In general, the 300 MHz to 3 GHz region is referred to as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelengths range from about 1 decimeter to 1 meter long. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features, but these waves may penetrate various structures sufficiently for macro cells to provide service to UEs 115 located indoors. Transmissions using UHF waves may be associated with smaller antennas and shorter ranges (e.g., less than 100 kilometers) than transmissions using smaller frequencies and longer waves in the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portions of the spectrum below 300 MHz.
[0115] The wireless communication system 100 may also operate in a super high frequency (SHF) zone using a frequency band from 3 GHz to 30 GHz (also known as a centimeter band) or in an extremely high frequency (EHF) zone of a spectrum (e.g., from 30 GHz to 300 GHz) (also known as a millimeter band). In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support mmW communications between a UE 115 and a base station 105, and the EHF antennas of the corresponding devices may be smaller and more closely spaced than UHF antennas. In some examples, this may facilitate the use of antenna arrays within the device. However, the propagation of EHF transmissions may be subject to even greater atmospheric attenuation and a shorter range than SHF or UHF transmissions. The technology disclosed herein may be employed across transmissions using one or more different frequency zones, and the use of frequency bands specified across these frequency zones may vary by country or regulatory agency.
[0116] The wireless communication system 100 may utilize both licensed and unlicensed radio frequency spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may employ licensed assisted access (LAA), LTE unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology in an unlicensed band (such as the 5 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band). When operating in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, devices (such as base stations 105 and UEs 115) may employ carrier sensing for conflict detection and avoidance. In some examples, operations in an unlicensed band may be based on a carrier aggregation configuration (e.g., LAA) in coordination with component carriers operating in a licensed band. Operations in an unlicensed spectrum may include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, P2P transmissions, or D2D transmissions, among others.
[0117] The base station 105 or UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which can be used to employ technologies such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, or beamforming. The antennas of the base station 105 or UE 115 may be located in one or more antenna arrays or antenna panels that can support MIMO operations or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located at an antenna assembly (such as an antenna tower). In some examples, the antennas or antenna arrays associated with the base station 105 may be located at different geographical locations. The base station 105 may have an antenna array having antenna ports of several rows and columns that the base station 105 can use to support beamforming for communications with the UE 115. Similarly, the UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that can support various MIMO or beamforming operations. Additionally or alternatively, the antenna panel may support radio frequency beamforming for signals transmitted via the antenna ports.
[0118] The base station 105 or UE 115 can use MIMO communication to utilize multipath signal propagation and improve spectral efficiency by transmitting or receiving multiple signals via different spatial layers. Such technology may be referred to as spatial multiplexing. For example, the transmitting device may transmit multiple signals via different antennas or different antenna combinations. Similarly, the receiving device may receive multiple signals via different antennas or different antenna combinations. Each of the multiple signals may be referred to as a separate spatial stream and may carry bits associated with the same data stream (e.g., the same codeword) or different data streams (e.g., different codewords). Different spatial layers may be associated with different antenna ports for channel measurement and reporting. MIMO technology includes single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are transmitted to the same receiving device; and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are transmitted to multiple devices.
[0119] Beamforming (which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception) is a signal processing technique that may be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a base station 105, a UE 115) to shape or steer an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam, a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming may be achieved by combining signals communicated via antenna elements of an antenna array so that some signals propagating at a particular orientation relative to the antenna array experience constructive interference, while other signals experience destructive interference. Adjustments to signals communicated via antenna elements may include the transmitting device or the receiving device applying an amplitude offset, a phase offset, or both to signals carried via antenna elements associated with the device. Adjustments associated with each antenna element may be defined by a set of beamforming weights associated with a particular orientation (e.g., relative to the antenna array of the transmitting device or the receiving device, or relative to some other orientation).
[0120] The base station 105 or the UE 115 may use beam sweeping techniques as part of a beamforming operation. For example, the base station 105 may use multiple antennas or antenna arrays (e.g., antenna panels) to perform beamforming operations for directional communication with the UE 115. Some signals (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) may be transmitted multiple times by the base station 105 in different directions. For example, the base station 105 may transmit signals according to different sets of beamforming weights associated with different transmission directions. Transmissions in different beam directions may be used (e.g., by a transmitting device (such as the base station 105) or a receiving device (such as the UE 115)) to identify a beam direction used by the base station 105 for later transmission or reception.
[0121] Some signals, such as data signals associated with a particular recipient device, may be transmitted by base station 105 in a single beam direction, e.g., a direction associated with a recipient device, such as UE 115. In some examples, a beam direction associated with transmissions along a single beam direction may be determined based on signals transmitted in one or more beam directions. For example, UE 115 may receive one or more signals transmitted by base station 105 in different directions and may report to base station 105 an indication of the signal received by UE 115 with the highest signal quality or other acceptable signal quality.
[0122] In some examples, transmission by a device (e.g., by a base station 105 or a UE 115) may be performed using multiple beam directions, and the device may use a combination of digital precoding or radio frequency beamforming to generate a combined beam for transmission (e.g., from the base station 105 to the UE 115). The UE 115 may report feedback indicating precoding weights for one or more beam directions, and the feedback may correspond to a configured number of beams across the system bandwidth or one or more subbands. The base station 105 may transmit a reference signal (e.g., a cell-specific reference signal (CRS), CSI-RS) that may be precoded or unprecoded. The UE 115 may provide feedback for beam selection, which may be a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) or codebook-based feedback (e.g., a multi-panel type codebook, a linear combination type codebook, a port selection type codebook). Although these techniques are described with reference to signals transmitted by base station 105 in one or more directions, UE 115 may use similar techniques to transmit signals multiple times in different directions (e.g., to identify a beam direction for subsequent transmission or reception by UE 115) or to transmit signals in a single direction (e.g., to transmit data to a receiving device).
[0123] A receiving device (e.g., UE 115) may try multiple reception configurations (e.g., directional listening) when receiving various signals (such as synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) from a base station 105. For example, the receiving device may try multiple reception directions by receiving via different antenna subarrays, processing received signals according to different antenna subarrays, receiving according to different receive beamforming weight sets (e.g., different directional listening weight sets) applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, or processing received signals according to different receive beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, any of which may be referred to as "listening" according to different reception configurations or reception directions. In some examples, the receiving device may use a single reception configuration to receive along a single beam direction (e.g., when receiving a data signal). The single reception configuration may be aligned on a beam direction determined based on listening according to different reception configuration directions (e.g., a beam direction determined to have the highest signal strength, the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or other acceptable signal quality based on listening according to multiple beam directions).
[0124] The wireless communication system 100 can be a packet-based network that operates according to a layered protocol stack. In the user plane, the communication of the bearer or packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer can be based on IP. The radio link control (RLC) layer can perform packet segmentation and reorganization to communicate on the logical channel. The media access control (MAC) layer can perform priority handling and multiplex the logical channel into the transport channel. The MAC layer can also use error detection technology, error correction technology, or both to support the retransmission of the MAC layer to improve link efficiency. In the control plane, the radio resource control (RRC) protocol layer can provide the establishment, configuration and maintenance of the RRC connection of the radio bearer that supports user plane data between the UE 115 and the base station 105 or the core network 130. In the physical layer, the transport channel can be mapped to the physical channel.
[0125] UE 115 and base station 105 may support retransmission of data to increase the likelihood that the data is successfully received. Hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) feedback is a technique for increasing the likelihood that data is correctly received on communication link 125. HARQ may include a combination of error detection (e.g., using a cyclic redundancy check (CRC)), forward error correction (FEC), and retransmission (e.g., automatic repeat request (ARQ)). HARQ may improve the throughput of the MAC layer in poor radio conditions (e.g., low signal-to-noise ratio conditions). In some examples, a device may support simultaneous slot HARQ feedback, wherein the device may provide HARQ feedback in a specific time slot for data received in a previous symbol in the time slot. In other cases, the device may provide HARQ feedback in a subsequent time slot or according to some other time interval.
[0126] The wireless communication system 100 can support broadband array operation. That is, the wireless communication system 100 can use a high transmission bandwidth-center frequency ratio to support broadband communication between the base station 105 and the UE 115. In some cases, if the transmission bandwidth-center frequency ratio is greater than a threshold percentage (e.g., five percent, ten percent, or some other threshold percentage), the wireless communication system 100 can be considered a broadband system. In some such systems, the base station 105 and the UE 115 can communicate on one or more carriers with a relatively large carrier bandwidth. In some cases, the array response of the base station 105, the UE 115, or both can change across the carrier bandwidth. For example, signals transmitted at various frequencies across the carrier bandwidth (e.g., relatively far from the center frequency) may suffer from moderate to severe signal loss (e.g., SINR) loss), or may not be detected by the UE 115 due to changes in the array response across the bandwidth. Signal loss may potentially lead to a reduction in transmission reliability and a loss of performance.
[0127] Various aspects of the described techniques support wideband array operation via subband-specific signaling. For example, the base station 105 may configure multiple signals in different subbands across a carrier bandwidth to support separate beam selection in different subbands. For example, the base station 105 may transmit a first signal (e.g., SSB, CSI-RS, or another beam-specific signal) in a first subband of the carrier bandwidth and transmit a second signal in a second subband of the carrier bandwidth. The UE 115 may measure one or more signal measurements (e.g., RSRP, RSRQ, SNR, SINR, or any combination thereof) of the first signal and the second signal to estimate channel characteristics of the first subband and the second subband, respectively.
[0128] UE 115 can perform beamforming based on signal measurements across the bandwidth. In some examples, UE 115 can determine a first communication beam for a first subband and a second communication beam for a second subband based on signal measurements of a first signal and a second signal. For example, UE 115 can compare a first signal measurement of a first signal with a second signal measurement of a second signal. UE 115 can calculate the difference between the first signal measurement and the second signal measurement, and if the difference meets a threshold, a first communication beam can be selected for the first subband and a second communication beam can be selected for the second subband. The difference meeting the threshold can indicate that the performance of the communication beam (e.g., the first communication beam) used to measure the first signal measurement and the second signal measurement varies significantly from the first subband to the second subband. Alternatively, if the difference fails to meet the threshold, UE 115 can select a first communication beam for a carrier bandwidth (e.g., including a first subband and a second subband). UE 115 can communicate with base station 105 using the selected one or more communication beams.
[0129] Figure 2 An example of a wireless communication system 200 that supports techniques for supporting broadband array operations according to aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. For example, the wireless communication system 200 may include a base station 105-a and a UE 115-a within a geographic coverage area 110-a. The base station 105-a and the UE 115-a may be as described with reference to Figure 1Examples of base stations 105 and UEs 115 described. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 may support one or more radio access technologies, including a 4G system (such as an LTE system, an LTE-A system, or an LTE-APro system), a 5G system (which may be referred to as an NR system), or a combination of these or other radio access technologies. In some cases, the base station 105-a may implement sub-band-specific signaling 205, and the UE 115-a may implement sub-band-specific communication beam selection based on the sub-band-specific signaling 205 to support reliable broadband array operation.
[0130] The base station 105-a and the UE 115-a may be configured with multiple antenna ports, which may be used to employ techniques such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, MIMO communication, or beamforming, or any combination thereof. The antenna ports, physical antennas, or both of the base station 105-a and the UE 115-a may be located within one or more corresponding antenna arrays or antenna panels that may support MIMO operations, transmit beamforming, receive beamforming, or a combination thereof. For example, the base station 105-a antenna or antenna array may be co-located at an antenna assembly (such as an antenna tower). In some examples, the antennas or antenna arrays associated with the base station 105-a may be located at different geographical locations. The base station 105-a may have an antenna array having several rows and columns of antenna ports that the base station 105-a may use to support beamforming for communications with the UE 115-a. Similarly, the UE 115-a may have one or more antenna arrays that may support various MIMO operations, beamforming operations, or both. Additionally or alternatively, the antenna panel may support radio frequency beamforming for signals transmitted via one or more antenna ports.
[0131] The base station 105-a and the UE 115-a may be configured to support directional communications (e.g., beamformed communications) using multiple antenna ports. The base station 105-a and the UE 115-a may communicate via directional communications using multiple component carriers. For example, the base station 105-a and the UE 115-a may be configured to support multiple downlink component carriers, multiple uplink component carriers, or both. The base station 105-a and the UE 115-a may be configured to support directional communications over a carrier bandwidth, or may be configured to support directional communications over one of a plurality of carrier bandwidths.
[0132] The UE 115-a may support directional communication using the set of UE communication beams 215, and the base station 105-a may support directional communication using the set of base station communication beams 220. That is, the UE 115-a may transmit uplink transmissions to the base station 105-a via the uplink channel 230 using one or more UE communication beams 215 (e.g., UE transmit beams) in the set of UE communication beams 215, and may receive downlink transmissions from the base station 105-a via the downlink channel 225 using one or more UE communication beams 215 (e.g., UE receive beams) in the set of UE communication beams 215. In addition, the base station 105-a may receive uplink transmissions from the UE 115-a via the uplink channel 230 using one or more base station communication beams 220 (e.g., base station receive beams) in the set of base station communication beams 220, and may transmit downlink transmissions via the downlink channel 225 using one or more base station communication beams 220 (e.g., base station transmit beams) in the set of base station communication beams 220.
[0133] The base station 105-a may transmit system information to the UE 115-a to establish or modify a connection between the base station 105-a and the UE 115-a. In some examples, the base station 105-a may broadcast the system information to a set of UEs 115 including the UE 115-a, and the UE 115 may monitor and blindly decode the system information. For example, the base station 105-a may transmit one or more SSBs to the UE 115-a, and the UE 115-a may synchronize with the base station 105-a in one or both of the time domain and the frequency domain, and obtain various base station information based on the one or more SSBs. In addition, the UE 115-a may perform downlink channel measurements based on receiving the one or more SSBs. The SSB may be an example of signaling 205 that varies by subband.
[0134] The base station 105-a and the UE 115-a may transmit reference signals to improve the efficiency and reliability of communication between the base station 105-a and the UE 115-a. The reference signal may be transmitted from the base station 105-a to the UE 115-a, and vice versa. The reference signal transmitted to the UE 115-a may be referred to as a downlink reference signal, and the reference signal transmitted to the base station 105-a may be referred to as an uplink reference signal. In some examples, the reference signal may be used by a wireless device to determine the characteristics of a physical channel (e.g., PDSCH, PUSCH). The characteristics of a physical channel may also be referred to as a channel estimate, a channel condition, or a channel metric. The UE 115-a and the base station 105-a may use the reference signal to decode or demodulate data transmitted via a physical channel. For example, the base station 105-a may transmit a CSI-RS to the UE 115-a so that the UE 115-a may estimate the state of the channel. The CSI-RS may be an example of signaling 205 that varies by subband.
[0135] The wireless communication system 200 can support broadband communication between the base station 105-a and the UE 115-a. For example, the base station 105-a and the UE 115-a can communicate on one or more carriers with a high carrier bandwidth-center frequency ratio. In some cases, the array response of the antenna array of the base station 105-a, the UE 115-a, or both can change across the carrier bandwidth of the carrier in the one or more carriers. Changes in the array response may cause signal loss and reduced transmission reliability. In some examples, the signal loss caused by changes in the array response can be referred to as beam tilt. In some cases, the severity of the beam tilt can depend on the center frequency of the carrier, the size of the carrier bandwidth, the array configuration of the antenna array of the base station 105-a, the UE 115-a, or both, the beam pattern of the base station 105-a, the UE 115-a, or both (e.g., beam width, beam direction, or another communication beam parameter), the position of the UE 115-a relative to the antenna array of the base station 105-a, or any combination thereof.
[0136] In order to reduce or mitigate beam tilt, the base station 105-a may transmit signals (e.g., SSBs, CSI-RSs, or other beam-specific signals) distributed across the bandwidth of the carrier, and the UE 115-a may use these signals to measure characteristics of the physical channel across the bandwidth. These signals may be examples of signals using OFDM-based waveforms transmitted on a single carrier. For example, the base station 105-a may configure multiple subbands across the carrier bandwidth. The base station 105-a may transmit subband-specific signaling 205 to the UE 115-a via a downlink channel 225, including a set of signals, wherein each signal in the set of signals corresponds to a subband in the plurality of subbands. For example, the subband-specific signaling 205 may include a first signal transmitted in a first subband of the plurality of subbands and a second signal transmitted in a second subband of the plurality of subbands. In some cases, each signal in the set of signals may include the same signal information (e.g., the set of SSBs may include the same SSB sequence). In some other cases, some of the signals in the set of signals may include different signal information (e.g., different sequences) to allow UE 115-a to distinguish between the signals. For example, by using the different signal information, UE 115-a can identify the signal type associated with each signal (e.g., UE 115-a can determine whether the SSB is a primary SSB or a secondary SSB).
[0137] UE 115-a may receive signaling 205 that varies by subband, and may measure one or more signal measurements for each signal in a received signal set. For example, UE 115-a may measure RSRP, RSRQ, SNR, SINR, or any combination of these or other signal measurements for each signal in a received signal set. UE 115-a may measure one or more signal measurements for each signal in a received signal set for a particular UE communication beam 215. For example, UE 115-a may measure one or more signal measurements of a first signal and a second signal using a first UE communication beam 215-a (e.g., a UE receive beam). Based on the one or more signal measurements of the first signal and the one or more signal measurements of the second signal, UE 115-a may determine a beam tilt level between a first subband and a second subband using the first UE communication beam 215-a. That is, UE 115-a can compare a first signal measurement (e.g., RSRP, RSRQ, SNR, SINR, or another signal measurement) in one or more signal measurements of the first signal with a second signal measurement in one or more signal measurements of the second signal, and can calculate the difference between the first signal measurement and the second signal measurement. The beam tilt level between the first subband and the second subband can be based on the difference between the first signal measurement and the second signal measurement. In addition, UE 115-a can determine the beam tilt level between any two subbands of a plurality of subbands by calculating the difference between the signal measurements of the two subbands. In some cases, the beam tilt can be based on a communication beam pair between UE 115-a and base station 105-a. For example, UE 115-a can calculate the difference between signals received from the same base station communication beam 220 (e.g., base station transmit beam) in different subbands using the same UE communication beam 215 (e.g., UE receive beam) to determine the beam tilt level for a particular beam pair.
[0138] The UE 115-a may be configured with one or more threshold beam tilt values. For example, the UE 115-a may be pre-configured with a threshold beam tilt value, or the base station 105-a may configure the UE 115-a with a threshold beam tilt value. In some examples, the base station 105-a may transmit a threshold beam tilt value (e.g., three decibels (dB) or some other threshold) in the remaining minimum system information (RMSI) or via a physical broadcast channel (PBCH). The UE 115-a may select to use a specific UE communication beam 215 to communicate in a subband of a carrier based on the threshold beam tilt value. For example, the UE 115-a may determine the beam tilt between a first subband and a second subband. If the beam tilt is greater than the threshold beam tilt value, the UE 115-a may select a first UE communication beam 215-a to communicate in the first subband, and select a second UE communication beam 215-b to communicate in the second subband. That is, if the difference in signal measurements between a pair of subbands in a carrier bandwidth satisfies a threshold beam tilt value, the UE 115-a may perform beamforming (e.g., communication beam selection) per subband. Additionally or alternatively, if the beam tilt is less than the threshold beam tilt value, the UE 115-a may select the first UE communication beam 215-a to communicate in the first subband and the second subband in order to save power. That is, if the difference in signal measurements between each pair of subbands in the carrier bandwidth fails to satisfy the threshold beam tilt value, the UE 115-a may perform beamforming for the entire carrier bandwidth (e.g., rather than on a subband-by-subband basis) to reduce the processing involved in beamforming.
[0139] UE 115-a can perform beam management based on the beam tilt level across the carrier bandwidth. For example, UE 115-a can be preconfigured with multiple threshold beam tilt values, or base station 105-a can configure UE 115-a with multiple threshold beam tilt values, where each threshold beam tilt value corresponds to a different beam tilt level. For example, a first threshold beam tilt value may correspond to a severe beam tilt level (e.g., the communication beam is undetectable in one or more subbands of the carrier bandwidth, the communication beam is misaligned, or causes UE115-a to detect some other signal loss of the communication beam for the subband), a second threshold beam tilt value may correspond to a moderate beam tilt level (e.g., a 1-2dB SINR loss across the carrier bandwidth, or some other loss in signal measurement), and a third threshold beam tilt value may correspond to a slight beam tilt level (e.g., a negligible or less than 1dB SINR loss across the carrier bandwidth).
[0140] UE 115-a may perform one or more beam management procedures based on the beam tilt level. In some cases, the subband-specific signaling 205 may include SSBs and CSI-RS that UE 115-a may use to perform one or more beam management procedures. In some examples, the base station communication beam 220 may be relatively narrower relative to the UE communication beam 215, and the base station 105-a may use relatively more beams than UE 115-a (e.g., based on the antenna port configuration of the base station 105-a and the UE 115-a). In some examples, if the beam tilt between the first subband and the second subband satisfies a first threshold beam tilt value (e.g., the beam tilt corresponds to a severe beam tilt level), the UE 115-a may perform a first set of beam management procedures. In some cases, the first set of beam management procedures may include a first beam management procedure, a second beam management procedure, and a third beam management procedure. In a first beam management procedure, the UE 115-a may select a first preferred base station communication beam 220 in a set of base station communication beams 220 for transmitting sub-band specific signaling 205 (e.g., SSBs), a first preferred UE communication beam 215 in a set of UE communication beams 215 for receiving sub-band specific signaling 205, or both based on measuring received SSBs. The UE 115-a may transmit a report 210 of preferred base station communication beam(s) 220 (e.g., sub-band specific preferred beams) to the base station 105-a. In a second beam management procedure, the UE 115-a may select a second preferred base station communication beam 220 in a subset of base station communication beams in the set of base station communication beams 220 based on measuring received CSI-RSs, wherein the subset of base station communication beams may be based on the first preferred base station communication beam 220. UE 115-a may transmit report 210 of second preferred base station communication beam 220 to base station 105-a. In a third beam management procedure, UE 115-a may perform UE communication beam 215 refinement (eg, communication beam selection) based on received CSI-RS per subband.
[0141] In some examples, if the beam tilt between the first subband and the second subband fails to meet the first threshold beam tilt value but meets the second threshold beam tilt value, the UE 115-a may execute a second set of beam management procedures. In some cases, the second set of beam management procedures includes the second beam management procedures and the third beam management procedures from the first set of beam management procedures. In some other examples, if the beam tilt between the first subband and the second subband fails to meet the second threshold beam tilt value but meets the third beam tilt value, the UE 115-a may execute a third set of beam management procedures. In some cases, the third set of beam management procedures includes the third beam management procedures from the first set of beam management procedures. Therefore, if the difference in signal measurements between a pair of subbands in the carrier bandwidth meets one or more of the multiple threshold beam tilt values, the UE 115-a may execute the first set of beam management procedures, the second set of beam management procedures, or the third set of beam management procedures per subband. However, the wireless communication system 200 may support any other combination of beam management procedures, beam tilt levels, and beam tilt thresholds.
[0142] In some examples, UE 115-a may measure one or more signal measurements for a received set of signals using multiple UE communication beams 215. For example, UE 115-a may measure one or more signal measurements of a first signal and a second signal (e.g., RSRP, RSRQ, SNR, SINR, or another signal measurement) using a first UE communication beam 215-a, and may measure one or more signal measurements of a first signal and a second signal (e.g., the same first signal and second signal or a repetition of the first signal and the second signal) using a second UE communication beam 215-b. UE 115-a may compare a first signal measurement of a first signal using the first UE communication beam 215-a with a second signal measurement of a first signal using the second UE communication beam 215-b. UE 115-a may also compare a first signal measurement of a second signal using the first UE communication beam 215-a with a second signal measurement of a second signal using the second UE communication beam 215-b. UE 115-a may select a UE communication beam 215 for communication in the first subband and the second subband based on the comparison. For example, if the first signal measurement of the first signal is greater than the second signal measurement of the first signal, the UE 115-a may select the first UE communication beam 215-a to communicate in the first subband. Additionally, if the first signal measurement of the second signal is less than the second signal measurement of the second signal, the UE 115-a may select the second UE communication beam 215-b to communicate in the second subband. Thus, the UE 115-a may communicate in each subband of the carrier using beam selection on a per-subband basis. In some examples, the UE 115-a may determine multiple UE communication beams 215 in addition to the first UE communication beam 215-a and the second UE communication beam 215-b to communicate in multiple subbands of the carrier.
[0143] In some examples, the base station 105-a may transmit a configuration message instructing the UE 115-a to communicate using one or more UE communication beams 215. For example, the configuration message may configure the UE 115-a to perform beam selection at a subband level (e.g., relative to a carrier level). In some cases, the UE 115-a may receive the configuration message in an RRC message, a MAC control element (MAC-CE), a downlink control information (DCI) message, or a combination thereof. The UE 115-a may select a UE communication beam 215 for communication in each subband based on the configuration message.
[0144] Additionally or alternatively, the base station 105-a may transmit a configuration message indicating multiple subbands across a carrier bandwidth. In some examples, the configuration message may indicate a reference subband among the multiple subbands. The UE 115-a may measure one or more signal measurements of a signal in a set of signals transmitted in the reference subband. In some cases, the UE 115-a may determine a UE communication beam 215 for communication in the carrier bandwidth based on signal measurements for signals transmitted in the reference subband. Additionally or alternatively, the UE 115-a may determine whether to communicate with the base station 105-a using different UE communication beams 215 across the carrier bandwidth based on one or more signal measurements of signals transmitted in the reference subband.
[0145] The UE 115-a may transmit a report 210 to the base station 105-a via an uplink channel 230 to report beam information that varies by subband. The UE 115-a may transmit the report 210 using one of the determined UE communication beams 215, and the base station 105-a may receive the report 210 using one of the base station communication beams 220. In some examples, the report 210 may include corresponding information for each of a plurality of subbands of the carrier. For example, the report 210 may include a preferred UE communication beam 215 for each subband, an order of preference for the UE communication beam 215 for each subband, a preferred UE communication beam 215 for one or more subband combinations, an order of preference for communication beams for one or more subband combinations, an order of preference for communication beams for a carrier bandwidth, an order of preference for a plurality of subbands, or a combination thereof. In some examples, the preference order can be based on signal measurements for the communication beams (e.g., where a relatively higher RSRP or other measurement corresponds to a relatively higher preference order, and a relatively lower RSRP or other measurement corresponds to a relatively lower preference order). In some cases, the report 210 may include a set of transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states, where each TCI state corresponds to one of the multiple subbands. For example, the report 210 may include a first TCI state corresponding to a first subband and a second TCI state corresponding to a second subband. In some cases, the first TCI state and the second TCI state are different TCI states.
[0146] The base station 105-a may receive the report 210 and determine a set of base station communication beams 220 to be used for communicating on the carrier based on the report 210. For example, the base station 105-a may select a base station communication beam 220 for the entire carrier bandwidth, or may select a base station communication beam 220 for each of a plurality of subbands of the carrier.
[0147] In some examples, the subband-specific signaling 205 may include repetitions of a set of signals for a time period. That is, the base station 105-a may transmit repetitions of a set of signals across the carrier bandwidth for the time period. In some cases, the set of signals is repeated according to a repetition cadence. In some examples, the signal in a first subband (e.g., a reference subband) may be repeated according to a repetition cadence that is different from the repetition cadence of the signal in a second subband. In some other examples, the signal of each subband may be repeated according to the same repetition cadence.
[0148] UE 115-a may calculate a difference between a first signal measurement of a first signal in a first subband and a second signal measurement of a second signal in a second subband for a first set of signals that are repeated in time. UE 115-a may determine that the difference between the first signal measurement and the second signal measurement changes by less than a threshold amount during a time period (e.g., from a first time repetition to a second time repetition for the time period). Based on the difference changing by less than the threshold amount, UE 115-a may receive a repetition of the first signal in the first subband in a subsequent time slot, and may suppress receiving a repetition of the second signal in the second subband in the subsequent time slot. UE 115-a may measure the first signal measurement for the first signal repeated in the subsequent time slot, and based on determining that the difference changes by less than the threshold amount, may derive a second signal measurement for the second signal repeated in the second subband in the subsequent time slot based on the difference calculated during the time period (e.g., a single difference or an average difference). In some examples, UE 115-a may implement an extrapolation function to derive one or more measurements on unmonitored subbands (e.g., based on previous measurements on these subbands). That the difference changes by less than a threshold amount during the time period may indicate or suggest that the UE 115 - a and the base station 105 - a are relatively stationary devices, such as customer premises equipment (CPE).
[0149] The UE 115-a may select a subset of UE communication beams 215 for communicating on a set of physical channels (e.g., a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH), a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH), a PDSCH, a PUSCH, a physical random access channel (PRACH), a PBCH, or some combination thereof). For example, the base station 105-a may configure physical channels in the set of physical channels in a set of frequency resources corresponding to one or more specific subbands. The UE 115-a may select a specific UE communication beam 215 for communicating on the physical channel based on a corresponding subband that includes resources for the physical channel. For example, the UE 115-a may select a first UE communication beam 215-a for communicating on a first subband configured for a first physical channel in the set of physical channels, and select a second UE communication beam 215-b for communicating on a second subband configured for a second physical channel in the set of physical channels.
[0150] The base station 105-a may configure a set of resource opportunities (e.g., frequency resources) associated with the physical channel set. In some examples, the base station 105-a may transmit the set of resource opportunities to the UE 115-a in RMSI, other system information (OSI), or a combination thereof. In some cases, the UE 115-a may identify the resource opportunities configured for the physical channels in the physical channel set in the resource opportunity set based on the decoded RMSI, OSI, or a combination thereof. In some cases, the UE 115-a may select a UE communication beam 215 for communicating on the physical channel based on the resource opportunities associated with the physical channels in the physical channel set. In some examples, the base station 105-a may configure a set of resource opportunities associated with the physical channel set for each subband of the carrier. In some cases, the UE 115-a may identify the set of resource opportunities configured for the physical channel set for the subband based on the decoded subband's RMSI, OSI, or a combination thereof. In some examples, UE 115-a can select a UE communication beam 215 for communicating on a physical channel set of a subband based on the subband in which the physical channel set is located. In this way, UE 115-a can complete the configuration establishment procedure associated with the physical channel set configured for each subband. In some other examples, the base station 105-a can configure a resource opportunity set associated with the same physical channel set across carriers in each subband of the carrier. For example, UE 115-a can identify a resource opportunity set associated with the same physical channel set by decoding RMSI, OSI, or a combination thereof in any subband of the carrier. That is, the RMSI, OSI, or a combination thereof for each subband can indicate the same resource opportunity set for the physical channel. In some cases, UE115-a can select a UE communication beam 215 for communicating on the physical channel based on the subband in which the resource opportunity for the physical channel in the same physical channel set is allocated. In this way, UE 115-a can complete the configuration establishment procedure associated with the same physical channel set.
[0151] The base station 105-a may group signals in a set of signals transmitted in the signaling 205 that varies by subband. For example, the base station 105-a may divide the signals into a first group and a second group. The base station 105-a may divide the signals into a first group and a second group based on the array configuration of the base station 105-a, one or more base station communication beams 220, the position of the UE 115-a relative to the array configuration of the base station 105-a, or a combination thereof. For example, the base station 105-a may determine that a first subset of signals (e.g., SSB) may be transmitted in a broadside direction relative to the antenna array of the base station 105-a using one or more base station communication beams 220. The base station communication beam 220 transmitted in the broadside direction may be associated with a stronger signal received by the UE 115-a. The base station 105-a may group the signals associated with the broadside beams and may determine that the signals of the first group are to be transmitted in a subset of the subbands (e.g., rather than in each subband of the carrier bandwidth). Additionally or alternatively, the base station 105-a may determine that a second subset of signals (e.g., SSB) may be transmitted in one or more base station communication beams 220 in an endfire direction relative to the antenna array of the base station 105-a or in a direction close to an edge of the field of view of the antenna array, or in both directions. The base station communication beam 220 transmitted in the endfire direction or in a direction close to an edge of the field of view of the antenna array may be associated with a weaker signal received by the UE 115-a. Based on determining the second subset of signals, the base station may group the signals into a second group and may determine to transmit the signals in all subbands of the carrier bandwidth. That is, the base station 105-a may transmit these relatively weak signals in multiple subbands across the carrier bandwidth—which may be more susceptible to cross-frequency degradation than signals transmitted using broadside beams—so that the UE 115-a may measure signal degradation across the carrier bandwidth.
[0152] The base station 105-a may configure the UE 115-a to monitor subband-specific signaling from one or more neighboring base stations 105. For example, the UE 115-a may be configured to monitor a set of SSB beams transmitted from one or more neighboring base stations 105. In some cases, the UE 115-a may monitor a first set of SSB beams in a first subband and a second set of SSB beams in a second subband. In some examples, the UE 115-a may monitor a set of SSB beams in a specific subband (e.g., a reference subband) of a plurality of subbands of a carrier configured by the base station 105-a. The UE 115-a may periodically or aperiodically monitor other subbands of the carrier to look for SSB beams from a neighboring base station 105. In some cases, the base station 105-a may trigger the UE 115-a to monitor a set of SSB beams across a set of subcarriers from one or more neighboring base stations 105. For example, a switching procedure or a beam change procedure may trigger the UE 115-a to monitor a set of SSB beams across subcarriers (e.g., as opposed to monitoring in a particular reference subcarrier). In some cases, the UE 115-a may determine whether to measure signals received from a neighboring base station 105 in one subcarrier or across multiple subcarriers (e.g., in the absence of configuration from the base station 105-a). The UE 115-a may transmit a report 210 to the base station 105-a indicating signal measurements for the neighboring base station 105 at the carrier level (e.g., based on a reference subband) or at the subband level (e.g., based on multiple subbands).
[0153] In some examples, the set of signals included in the subband-specific signaling 205 may be an SSB beam set (e.g., supporting an access procedure at UE 115-a). UE 115-a may use a set of UE communication beams 215 to receive multiple SSB beam sets across a carrier bandwidth. Each SSB beam set may include multiple SSBs transmitted using a set of base station communication beams 220 (e.g., base station transmit beams). For example, UE 115-a may use a set of UE communication beams 215 to receive a first SSB beam set of the multiple SSB beam sets in a first subband and a second SSB beam set of the multiple SSB beam sets in a second subband. For multiple UE communication beams 215 in the set of UE communication beams 215, UE 115-a may measure one or more signal measurements (e.g., RSRP, RSRQ, SNR, SINR, or any other signal measurement) for the first SSB beam set received in the first subband and the second SSB beam set received in the second subband. In some cases, the UE 115-a may select a UE communication beam 215 from the plurality of UE communication beams 215 to receive an SSB from the plurality of SSB beam sets in each subband based on measuring the one or more signal measurements. The UE 115-a may communicate with the base station 105-a using the selected UE communication beam 215. In some cases, the base station 105-a may communicate with the UE 115-a using one or more base station communication beams 220 corresponding to a particular SSB beam. For example, for a particular subband, the UE 115-a may determine a signal measurement set for an SSB beam set (e.g., corresponding to a base station transmit beam) using a UE receive beam set. The UE 115-a may identify the strongest signal measurement, and the UE 115-a and the base station 105-a may communicate in the particular subband using the base station transmit beam and the UE receive beam corresponding to the strongest signal measurement. In some examples, UE 115-a may use different UE receive beams in different subbands, base station 105-a may use different base station transmit beams in different subbands, or both.
[0154] In some examples, each SSB beam set may be associated with an SSB sequence. In some cases, each SSB beam set in the plurality of SSB beam sets may be associated with the same SSB sequence. In some other cases, different SSB beam sets in the plurality of SSB beam sets may be associated with different SSB sequences. For example, the SSB sequence may be based on the frequency resource, the subband, or both in which the SSB beam is transmitted.
[0155] In some examples, the signal set included in the subband-specific signaling 205 can be a CSI-RS set (e.g., when the UE 115-a is connected to the network via the base station 105-a). The UE 115-a can use the UE communication beam 215 set to receive multiple CSI-RS sets distributed across the carrier bandwidth. For example, the UE 115-a can use the UE communication beam 215 set to receive a first CSI-RS set of the multiple CSI-RS sets in a first subband and a second CSI-RS set of the multiple CSI-RS sets in a second subband. In some cases, the base station 105-a can use a base station communication beam 220 set to transmit each CSI-RS set. The UE 115-a can measure one or more signal measurements for each received CSI-RS set and can determine one or more preferred base station communication beams 220 for each subband of the carrier. UE 115-a can transmit a report 210 to the base station 105-a, which includes a preferred base station communication beam 220 for each subband at the base station 105-a, a preference order for the base station communication beam 220 for each subband at the base station 105-a, a base station communication beam 220 for the carrier bandwidth at the base station 105-a, a preference order for the subbands, or a combination thereof.
[0156] In some examples, UE 115-a may receive the CSI-RS set using a single UE communication beam 215. For example, base station 105-a may transmit the CSI-RS set by sweeping multiple base station communication beams 220. UE 115-a may receive the CSI-RS set using a single UE communication beam 215, and may measure signal measurements of the received CSI-RS set for each base station communication beam 220. Based on the signal measurements for each base station communication beam 220, UE 115-a may determine one or more preferred base station communication beams 220 for each sub-band of the carrier and transmit a report 210 to base station 105-a.
[0157] Additionally or alternatively, the base station 105-a may transmit repetitions of the CSI-RS set using the same base station communication beam 220. The UE 115-a may receive the repeated CSI-RS set by scanning multiple UE communication beams 215. The UE 115-a may measure signal measurements of the received CSI-RS set for each UE communication beam 215 in the multiple UE communication beams 215. Based on the signal measurements, the UE 115-a may select one or more preferred UE communication beams 215 for each subband of the carrier. For example, for each subband, the UE 115-a may identify the UE communication beam 215 associated with the strongest signal measurement, and may select the UE communication beam 215 associated with the strongest signal measurement to communicate on the subband. Additionally or alternatively, UE 115-a may transmit a report 210 to base station 105-a based on the same base station communication beam 220, the report 210 including a preferred UE communication beam 215 for each subband, an order of preference for UE communication beams 215 for each subband, UE communication beams 215 for carrier bandwidth, an order of preference for subbands, or a combination thereof.
[0158] Figure 3 An example of a carrier scheme 300 that supports techniques for supporting broadband array operations according to aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the carrier scheme 300 may implement Figure 1 and 2 Aspects of the wireless communication system 100 or 200 described herein. The carrier scheme 300 that implements the sub-band-specific signal 310 can be based on the configuration made by the base station 105 and can support high reliability communication in the wireless communication system (e.g., compared to the configuration that implements carrier-specific signaling). Among other benefits, the carrier scheme 300 can also reduce the power consumption caused by the UE 115 receiving the sub-band-specific signal 310.
[0159] The carrier scheme 300 illustrates an example of a carrier 305 for downlink transmission including signaling that varies by subband. A carrier 305 (e.g., a component carrier) may span a bandwidth in the frequency domain. Different carriers 305 may span the same or different carrier bandwidths. In some cases, the carrier bandwidth may be divided into multiple subbands 315. For example, a base station 105 may configure the carrier bandwidth with different subbands 315, each subband 315 occupying a portion of the frequency of the carrier bandwidth.
[0160] The base station 105 may transmit sub-band specific signals 310 in the sub-bands 315. For example, the base station may transmit sub-band specific signals 310-a, 310-d, and 310-g in a first sub-band 315-a, transmit sub-band specific signals 310-b, 310-e, and 310-h in a second sub-band 315-b, and transmit sub-band specific signals 310-c, 310-f, and 310-i in a third sub-band 315-c. Each of the sub-band specific signals 310-a, 310-b, and 310-c may be repeated in the time domain. For example, sub-band specific signals 310-d and 310-g may be examples of repetitions of sub-band specific signals 310-a; sub-band specific signals 310-e and 310-h may be examples of repetitions of sub-band specific signals 310-b; and sub-band specific signals 310-f and 310-i may be repetitions of sub-band specific signals 310-c. In some cases, sub-band specific signals 310-a, 310-b, and 310-c may each be repeated according to the same repetition rhythm. In some other cases, sub-band specific signals 310-a, 310-b, and 310-c may be repeated according to one or more different repetition rhythms. Sub-band specific signals 310-a, 310-b, and 310-c may be transmitted concurrently on carrier 305. In some examples, base station 105 may configure the size of each sub-band 315. In some other examples, the size of each subband 315 may be implicitly determined based on the subband-specific signal 310 (eg, SSB). For example, the boundary of a subband 315 may be determined as the mid-frequency between the subband-specific signals 310 of consecutive subbands 315.
[0161] The UE 115 may receive the sub-band specific signals 310 in the corresponding sub-bands 315. In some cases, the UE 115 may receive the sub-band specific signals 310-a in the first sub-band 315-a concurrently with the sub-band specific signals 310-b in the second sub-band 315-b and the sub-band specific signals 310-c in the third sub-band 315-c. The UE 115 may measure one or more signal measurements (e.g., RSRP, RSRQ, SNR, SINR, or other signal measurements) of each received sub-band specific signal 310, and determine a communication beam for communication on each sub-band 315 based on the one or more signal measurements of each sub-band specific signal 310. For example, the UE 115 may measure one or more signal measurements of the sub-band specific signals 310-a, 310-b, and 310-c. UE 115 may calculate a first difference between a first signal measurement of subband-specific signal 310-a and a second signal measurement of subband-specific signal 310-b. Additionally, UE 115 may calculate a second difference between a second signal measurement of subband-specific signal 310-b and a third signal measurement of subband-specific signal 310-c. In some cases, UE 115 may calculate multiple differences based on a reference subband (e.g., a subband including a center frequency of a carrier bandwidth). Additionally or alternatively, UE 115 may calculate a single difference between a maximum signal measurement and a minimum signal measurement for the same set of parameters (e.g., the same time and the same beam pair, but for a different subband 315).
[0162] In one example, if the first difference satisfies (e.g., is greater than or equal to) a threshold beam tilt value (e.g., configured by the base station 105 or preconfigured at the UE 115), the UE 115 may determine to communicate on the first subband 315-a using the first communication beam and to communicate on the second subband 315-b using the second communication beam. If the second difference also satisfies (e.g., is greater than or equal to) the threshold beam tilt value, the UE 115 may further determine to communicate on the third subband 315-c using the third communication beam. Alternatively, if the second difference does not satisfy (e.g., is less than) the threshold beam tilt value, the UE may determine to communicate on the second subband 315-b and the third subband 315-c using the second communication beam. In another example, if no difference satisfies the threshold beam tilt value, the UE 115 may determine to communicate on the entire carrier bandwidth using the same communication beam. If any of the differences satisfy the threshold beam tilt value, the UE 115 may determine the communication beam to use for each subband 315 individually.
[0163] In some cases, the UE 115 may determine one or more signal measurements for the repeated factor-band-specific signal 310 without measuring the repeated factor-band-specific signal 310. For example, the UE 115 may calculate a first difference between a first signal measurement of the factor-band-specific signal 310-a and a second signal measurement of the factor-band-specific signal 310-b. When the repeated factor-band-specific signals 310-d and 310-e are received, the UE 115 may determine that the first difference changes by less than a threshold amount. The UE 115 may measure a third signal measurement of the repeated factor-band-specific 310-g, and use the first difference (or an average of the differences for the factor-band-specific signals 310-a and 310-b and the factor-band-specific signals 310-d and 310-e) and the third signal measurement to derive a fourth signal measurement of the repeated factor-band-specific signal 310-h.
[0164] In some examples, each sub-band specific signal 310 may correspond to an SSB beam set. For example, sub-band specific signal 310-a may represent an SSB sweep transmission instance across an SSB beam set (e.g., SSBs transmitted using different base station transmit beams). Sub-band specific signal 310-a may correspond to a first SSB beam set, sub-band specific signal 310-b may correspond to a second SSB beam set (e.g., the same or different SSBs transmitted using the same sweep of a base station transmit beam in different frequency resources), and sub-band specific signal 310-c may correspond to a third SSB beam set. In some cases, UE 115 may use a receive beam set to receive a first SSB beam set, a second SSB beam set, and a third SSB beam set. UE 115 may use the receive beam set to measure multiple signal measurements for each SSB beam set, and may determine a receive beam based on these signal measurements. In some cases, the UE 115 may generate a table or a subset of the table in memory indicating the determined receive beams. For example, if the base station 105 sweeps 64 SSB beams in the subband-specific signal 310 and the subband-specific signal 310 is distributed across three subbands 315, the UE 115 may generate a 64×3 table indicating the UE receive beam index for each combination of base station transmit beam index and subband 315. In some cases, the UE 115 may create a subset of such a table (e.g., based on not receiving a particular SSB beam, not obtaining a measurement for a particular subband 315, or some similar reasoning). The determined UE receive beam for a particular base station transmit beam / subband combination may be based on comparing signal measurements of each UE receive beam receiving the signal from the particular base station transmit beam on the particular subband 315.
[0165] The base station 105 may configure a relationship between a grid frequency (e.g., a grid point or a channel grid) for a carrier bandwidth of the carrier 305 and a frequency position of each SSB beam set in the carrier bandwidth. For example, the base station 105 may transmit a first SSB beam set (e.g., subband-specific signal 310-a) at a first frequency position in a first subband 315-a, a second SSB beam set (e.g., subband-specific signal 310-b) at a second frequency position in a second subband 315-b, and a third SSB beam set (e.g., subband-specific signal 310-c) at a third frequency position in a third subband 315-c. The base station 105 may transmit each SSB beam set such that a frequency distance between the first position and the second position—and similarly, a distance between the second position and the third position—is a function of the grid frequency. For example, the second frequency location for receiving the SSB beam may be located at a first grid point that is X megahertz (MHz) away from the first frequency location for receiving the SSB beam (e.g., where X = 1000 MHz, X = 2000 MHz, or X is some other preconfigured or configurable frequency interval for the SSB beam set). Thus, if the UE 115 detects the first SSB beam set, the UE 115 can determine the frequency location at which to monitor the second SSB beam set. In this way, the UE 115 can avoid monitoring the entire carrier bandwidth or the entire sub-band bandwidth for each SSB beam set, and instead can monitor at a frequency location determined based on the grid frequency. In some cases, the carrier bandwidth can be associated with more than one grid frequency to determine the frequency location of each SSB beam set. Additionally or alternatively, a minimum number of SSB beam positions, a maximum number of SSB beam positions, a minimum number of SSB beams, a maximum number of SSB beams, a minimum number of subbands, a maximum number of subbands, or some combination thereof may be configured for the carrier bandwidth (e.g., preconfigured for UE 115-a or configured by base station 105-a).
[0166] In some examples, each factor-band specific signal 310 may correspond to a CSI-RS set. For example, factor-band specific signal 310-a may correspond to a first CSI-RS set, factor-band specific signal 310-b may correspond to a second CSI-RS set, and factor-band specific signal 310-c may correspond to a third CSI-RS set. UE 115 may receive a first CSI-RS set, a second CSI-RS set, and a third CSI-RS set from a transmit beam set at base station 105 using a receive beam set. In some cases, base station 105 may transmit the first CSI-RS set, the second CSI-RS set, and the third CSI-RS set using the same transmit beam. UE 115 may use the receive beam set to measure multiple signal measurements for each CSI-RS set. The UE 115 may select a first receive beam for the subband 315-a based on the first CSI-RS set, a second receive beam for the subband 315-b based on the second CSI-RS set, and a third receive beam for the subband 315-c based on the third CSI-RS set based on the signal measurement for each CSI-RS set. The UE 115 may additionally or alternatively determine a preferred transmit beam for each subband 315 of the carrier in the transmit beam set. For example, the UE 115 may select a first preferred transmit beam for the first subband 315-a, a second preferred transmit beam for the second subband 315-b, and a third preferred transmit beam for the third subband 315-c. The UE 115 may transmit a report to the base station 105 that includes a preferred transmit beam for each subband 315, an order of preference for the preferred transmit beam for each subband 315, a preferred transmit beam for the carrier bandwidth at the base station 105, an order of preference for the subbands 315, or a combination thereof.
[0167] In some cases, UE 115-a may group one or more subbands 315 together for reporting (e.g., based on adjacent subbands, a difference threshold for cross-subband measurements, or some combination thereof). For example, UE 115-a may report beam information (e.g., preferred UE communication beams, preferred base station communication beams, an order of preference for communication beams, signal measurements for communication beams or beam pairs, or some combination thereof) for subband 315-a, subband 315-b, subband 315-c, a combination of subbands 315-a and 315-b, a combination of subbands 315-b and 315-c, a combination of subbands 315-a, 315-b, and 315-c (e.g., full carrier bandwidth), or any combination thereof.
[0168] Figure 4 An example of a process flow 400 that supports techniques for supporting broadband array operations in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the process flow 400 may be implemented as described with reference to Figure 1 and2 Aspects of the wireless communication system 100 or 200 described herein. The process flow 400 may be based on a configuration made by the base station 105-b or the UE 115-b and may be implemented by the UE 115-b to support reliable communications for wideband array operations (e.g., in mmW systems). The process flow 400 may also be implemented by the UE 115-b to potentially reduce power consumption at the UE 115-b (e.g., based on reducing failed transmission and reception procedures at the UE 115-b), among other benefits.
[0169] The base station 105-b and the UE 115-b may be as shown in FIG. Figures 1 to 3 Examples of base stations 105 and UEs 115 are described. In the following description of process flow 400, operations between base station 105-b and UE 115-b may be communicated in an order different from the example order shown, or operations performed by base station 105-b and UE 115-b may be performed in a different order or at a different time. Some operations may also be omitted from process flow 400, and other operations may be added to process flow 400.
[0170] At 405, the base station 105-b may configure a set of transmission instances for a sub-band specific signal set across a carrier bandwidth. The carrier bandwidth may include multiple sub-bands, and each sub-band specific signal in the sub-band specific signal set may correspond to a sub-band of the carrier bandwidth. In some cases, the sub-band specific signal set may be an SSB beam. In some other cases, the sub-band specific signal set may be a CSI-RS.
[0171] At 410, the base station 105-b may transmit the sub-band specific signal set to the UE 115-b in the configured set of transmission instances. For example, the base station 105-b may transmit a first sub-band specific signal in the sub-band specific signal set in a first sub-band of the carrier bandwidth and a second sub-band specific signal in the sub-band specific signal set in a second sub-band of the carrier bandwidth.
[0172] At 415, UE 115-b may receive the set of factor-band-specific signals and may measure multiple signal measurements for each factor-band-specific signal in the set of factor-band-specific signals. For example, UE 115-b may measure a first signal measurement for a first factor-band-specific signal and a second signal measurement for a second factor-band-specific signal.
[0173] At 420, UE 115-b may determine a set of communication beams for subbands of the carrier bandwidth based on a plurality of signal measurements for each subband-specific signal measurement. For example, UE 115-b may determine a first communication beam for a first subband in the communication beam set and a second communication beam for a second subband in the communication beam set based on a first signal measurement of a signal that varies from subband to subband and a second signal measurement of a signal that varies from subband to subband. In some cases, UE 115-b may compare the first signal measurement with the second signal measurement and calculate the difference between the first signal measurement and the second signal measurement. If the difference satisfies a threshold for beam tilt, UE 115-b may select a first communication beam for the first subband and a second communication beam for the second subband based on the difference satisfying the threshold. However, if the difference fails to satisfy the threshold for beam tilt, UE 115-b may select a communication beam for the carrier bandwidth.
[0174] At 425, the UE 115-b may communicate with the base station 105-b in the carrier bandwidth according to the determined set of communication beams. For example, the UE 115-b may communicate with the base station 105-b using a beam pair that varies by carrier, or may communicate with the base station 105-b using a beam pair that varies by sub-band.
[0175] Figure 5 A diagram 500 of a device 505 supporting techniques for supporting wideband array operations according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The device 505 may be an example of aspects of a UE 115 as described herein. The device 505 may include a receiver 510, a communication manager 515, and a transmitter 520. The device 505 may also include a processor. Each of these components may be in communication with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).
[0176] Receiver 510 may receive information such as packets, user data, or control information associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, and information related to techniques for supporting wideband array operations, etc.). The information may be passed to other components of device 505. Receiver 510 may be a reference Figure 8 Examples of aspects of the described transceiver 820. The receiver 510 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of antennas.
[0177] The communication manager 515 may: receive a signal set across a carrier bandwidth including a subband set from a base station, wherein a first signal in the signal set is received in a first subband in the subband set, and a second signal in the signal set is received in a second subband in the subband set that is different from the first subband; measure a signal measurement value set corresponding to the subband set for the signal set; determine a communication beam set for the subband set based on the signal measurement value set, wherein a first communication beam in the communication beam set is determined for the first subband and a second communication beam different from the first communication beam is determined for the second subband; and communicate with the base station in the carrier bandwidth based on the determined communication beam set. The communication manager 515 may be an example of aspects of the communication manager 810 described herein.
[0178] The communication manager 515 or its subcomponents may be implemented in hardware, in code (e.g., software or firmware) executed by a processor, or any combination thereof. If implemented in code executed by a processor, the functions of the communication manager 515 or its subcomponents may be performed by a general purpose processor, a digital signal processor (DSP), an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), a field programmable gate array (FPGA) or other programmable logic device designed to perform the functions described in the present disclosure, discrete gate or transistor logic, discrete hardware components, or any combination thereof.
[0179] The actions performed by the communication manager 515 as described herein may be implemented to achieve one or more potential advantages. For example, using different communication beams to communicate with a base station in different subbands across a carrier bandwidth may allow a UE to more accurately estimate the channel characteristics of each subband. Accurately estimating the channel characteristics across a carrier bandwidth may increase transmission reliability for wideband array operations. In some examples, using multiple communication beams to communicate may further potentially reduce power consumption by reducing the number of failed transmission and reception procedures performed by the UE.
[0180] Based on using multiple communication beams to communicate with the base station, a processor of the device 505 (e.g., a processor controlling the receiver 510, the communication manager 515, the transmitter 520, or a combination thereof) can reduce processing resources used for network connection procedures. For example, by reducing the number of times the device 505 fails to establish a connection with the network due to failed reception procedures, the device 505 can reduce the processing overhead associated with establishing a connection with the network. Additionally or alternatively, the processor can reduce processing resources used to handle retransmissions due to signal degradation across carrier bandwidths (e.g., by improving transmission or reception reliability or both based on using different communication beams in different subbands across carrier bandwidths).
[0181] The communication manager 515 or its subcomponents may be physically located at various locations, including being distributed such that portions of functionality are implemented by one or more physical components at different physical locations. In some examples, according to various aspects of the present disclosure, the communication manager 515 or its subcomponents may be separate and distinct components. In some examples, according to various aspects of the present disclosure, the communication manager 515 or its subcomponents may be combined with one or more other hardware components, including but not limited to input / output (I / O) components, a transceiver, a network server, another computing device, one or more other components described in the present disclosure, or a combination thereof.
[0182] The transmitter 520 may transmit signals generated by other components of the device 505. In some examples, the transmitter 520 may be co-located with the receiver 510 in a transceiver module. For example, the transmitter 520 may be a reference Figure 8 Examples of aspects of the described transceiver 820. The transmitter 520 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of antennas.
[0183] Figure 6 A diagram 600 of a device 605 supporting techniques for supporting wideband array operations according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The device 605 may also include a processor. Each of these components may be in communication with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).
[0184] Receiver 610 may receive information such as packets, user data, or control information associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, and information related to techniques for supporting wideband array operations, etc.). The information may be passed to other components of device 605. Receiver 610 may be a reference Figure 8 Examples of aspects of the described transceiver 820. The receiver 610 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of antennas.
[0185] The communication manager 615 may be an example of aspects of the communication manager 515 as described herein. [0186] The signal component 620 may: receive a signal set across a carrier bandwidth including a subband set from a base station, wherein a first signal in the signal set is received in a first subband in the subband set, and a second signal in the signal set is received in a second subband in the subband set that is different from the first subband. The measurement component 625 may measure a signal measurement value set corresponding to the subband set for the signal set. The communication beam manager 630 may determine a communication beam set for the subband set based on the signal measurement value set, wherein a first communication beam in the communication beam set is determined for the first subband and a second communication beam different from the first communication beam is determined for the second subband. The communication component 635 may communicate with the base station in the carrier bandwidth based on the determined communication beam set.
[0187] The transmitter 640 may transmit signals generated by other components of the device 605. In some examples, the transmitter 640 may be co-located with the receiver 610 in a transceiver module. For example, the transmitter 640 may be a reference Figure 8 Examples of aspects of the described transceiver 820. The transmitter 640 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of antennas.
[0188] Figure 7 A diagram 700 of a communication manager 705 supporting techniques for supporting wideband array operations in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is shown. Each of these components can communicate directly or indirectly with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).
[0189] The signal component 710 may: receive a signal set across a carrier bandwidth including a subband set from a base station, wherein a first signal in the signal set is received in a first subband in the subband set, and a second signal in the signal set is received in a second subband in the subband set that is different from the first subband. In some cases, the first signal and the second signal are received concurrently in the first subband and the second subband. In some examples, the signal component 710 may receive a repetition of the signal set across the carrier bandwidth from the base station for a period of time. In some implementations, the signal component 710 may receive a repeated first signal from the base station in the first subband in a subsequent time slot.
[0190] In some cases, the signal set includes an SSB set. In some examples, the receiving further includes: using a receive beam set to receive a set of SSB beam sets across the carrier bandwidth, wherein a first SSB beam set in the set of SSB beam sets is received in a first subband, and a second SSB beam set in the set of SSB beam sets is received in a second subband. In some other cases, a first SSB sequence for the first SSB beam set received in the first subband is different from a second SSB sequence for the second SSB beam set received in the second subband. In some examples, the first SSB sequence is based on the first subband, and the second SSB sequence is based on the second subband.
[0191] In some cases, the signal set includes a CSI-RS set. In some other cases, the receiving further includes: using a receive beam set to receive a set of CSI-RS across the carrier bandwidth, wherein a first CSI-RS in the set of CSI-RS is received in a first subband using the receive beam set, and a second CSI-RS in the set of CSI-RS is received in a second subband using the receive beam set.
[0192] The measurement component 715 can measure a set of signal measurement values corresponding to the set of subbands for the set of signals. In some examples, the measurement component 715 can measure a first signal measurement value in a subsequent time slot for the repeated first signal. In some implementations, the measurement component 715 can derive a second signal measurement value in a subsequent time slot based on the difference and determining that the difference has changed by less than a threshold amount.
[0193] In some examples, the signal measurement value set includes an RSRP measurement set, an RSRQ measurement set, an SNR measurement set, an SINR measurement set, or a combination thereof. In some cases, the signal measurement value set is based on a center frequency for a carrier bandwidth, a transmit bandwidth for a carrier bandwidth, an antenna array configuration for a base station, a beam pattern, a position of the UE relative to the base station, or a combination thereof.
[0194] The communication beam manager 720 may determine a communication beam set for the subband set based on the signal measurement value set, wherein a first communication beam in the communication beam set is determined for the first subband and a second communication beam different from the first communication beam is determined for the second subband. In some examples, the determination further includes: for each subband in the subband set, selecting a receive beam in the receive beam set for each SSB beam in the group of SSB beam sets. In some cases, the determination further includes: selecting a transmit beam set in the transmit beam set at the base station for the subband set. In some implementations, the determination further includes: selecting a receive beam set in the receive beam set for the subband set, wherein communicating with the base station in the carrier bandwidth is also based on the selection. In some cases, the communication beam set includes a UE receive beam set, a base station transmit beam set, a UE transmit beam set, a base station receive beam set, or a combination thereof.

[0196] In some examples, the communication beam manager 720 may receive a configuration message from a base station indicating to the UE that a communication beam that varies from subband to subband is to be used for communication. In some cases, the communication beam manager 720 may select a communication beam set for communication in a subband set of the carrier bandwidth based on the configuration message. In some implementations, the communication beam manager 720 may receive a configuration message from a base station indicating a subband set configured for the carrier bandwidth, wherein determining the communication beam set is based on the subband set configured for the carrier bandwidth. In some cases, the configuration message includes an RRC message, a MAC-CE, a DCI message, or a combination thereof.
[0197] In some examples, the communication beam manager 720 can identify a subband set based on the received set of SSB beam sets, wherein determining the communication beam set is based on the identified subband set.

In some examples, the communication component 725 can communicate with the base station in the carrier bandwidth using a receive beam that varies by sub-band in the receive beam set, an SSB beam that varies by sub-band in the set of SSB beams, or a combination thereof based on the selection. In some cases, the communication component 725 can use an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform to convey one or more messages.
[0199] The comparison component 730 may compare a first signal measurement value for a first signal in the set of signal measurements with a second signal measurement value for a second signal in the set of signal measurements. In some examples, the comparison component 730 may calculate a difference between the first signal measurement value and the second signal measurement value. In some cases, the comparison component 730 may compare the difference with a beam tilt threshold, wherein if the difference fails to meet the beam tilt threshold, selecting one or more communication beams includes selecting a communication beam for the carrier bandwidth, and if the difference meets the beam tilt threshold, selecting one or more communication beams includes selecting a communication beam set for a subband set. In some examples, the comparison component 730 may determine that the difference between the first signal measurement value and the second signal measurement value changes by less than a threshold amount during the time period.
[0200] The reporting component 735 can transmit a measurement report to the base station based on the determined set of communication beams for the set of subbands, the measurement report including corresponding information for each subband in the set of subbands.
[0201] In some examples, the reporting component 735 may transmit a report message to the base station based on the selection, the report message including the preferred subband in the subband set, the order of preference for the subband set, or a combination thereof. In some cases, the measurement report includes a preferred communication beam for each subband in the subband set, an order of preference for communication beams for each subband in the subband set, a preferred communication beam for one or more subband combinations in the subband set, an order of preference for communication beams for one or more subband combinations in the subband set, an order of preference for communication beams for carrier bandwidth, an order of preference for subband sets, or a combination thereof.

[0204] The physical channel manager 740 may select a subset of communication beams from the determined set of communication beams for communication on the set of physical channels, wherein a first communication beam is selected for a first physical channel in the set of physical channels, and a second communication beam is selected for a second physical channel in the set of physical channels. In some examples, the physical channel manager 740 may identify a resource opportunity configured for a physical channel in the set of physical channels, wherein a communication beam for the physical channel is selected based on the resource opportunity configured for the physical channel and a subband in a subband set corresponding to the resource opportunity. In some cases, the resource opportunity for the physical channel is identified based on the remaining minimum system information, other system information, or a combination thereof. In some implementations, the physical channel includes a physical control channel, a physical data channel, a PRACH, a physical feedback channel, or a combination thereof.
[0205] The monitoring component 745 can monitor the set of SSB beam sets across the carrier bandwidth based on one or more grid frequencies for the carrier bandwidth, wherein receiving the set of SSB beam sets is based on the monitoring. In some examples, SSB beam sets from one or more neighboring base stations are monitored, wherein the monitoring includes monitoring a first SSB beam set in a first subband and a second SSB beam set in a second subband, monitoring the SSB beam set in a specific subband of the carrier bandwidth, determining a monitoring configuration based on a triggering event, or a combination thereof.
