Description

Technical Field

[0001] Field of the Invention The present invention relates to fabric cleaning compositions; in particular solid laundry detergent compositions having desirable suds characteristics during the wash process. Background Art

[0002] Synthetic detergents are widely used for washing fabrics due to the efficiency of these detergent compositions in cleaning and stain removal. In addition to synthetic detergents, laundry detergent compositions are formulated to contain various additives to provide improved cleaning and sensory benefits. One of the sensory benefits includes maintaining an appropriate level of foam during the washing process.

[0003] The foaming or foaming of detergents is an extremely important factor to be considered when formulating detergent compositions. Foam is an important consumer cue and is the main reason why consumers perceive compositions to have cleaning effects. Unfortunately, although foam is easy to produce, it is also necessary to remove it from the substrate after cleaning. Large amounts of foam in the wash cycle usually result in the foam being carried into the rinse solution, and additional time, energy and water are required to thoroughly rinse the washed articles. Therefore, for consumer acceptance, it is advantageous to produce high foam volumes in the early stages of the wash cycle. Thereafter, for complete cleaning and minimal waste of cleaning water, the rapid collapse of the foam to a smaller volume at the end of the wash cycle is another preferred aspect of the foaming characteristics of the detergent composition.

[0004] Several attempts have been made in the past to save water after washing textile articles with high foaming compositions. Laundry preparations, such as rinse aids, have been used to help reduce the foam carried over into the rinse water by the washed fabrics. Rinse aids reduce the amount of water used during rinsing. However, the use of rinse aids adds an extra step and requires the consumer to use an additional product in the washing process.

[0005] In today's fast-paced world, consumers seek a single composition that provides multiple benefits. Therefore, there is a need for a detergent composition that provides good foam properties, good cleaning benefits and reduces water consumption. This need is particularly felt by consumers living in areas with severe water shortages.

[0006] In recent years, the use of synthetic detergents is related to the adverse effects on the environment, because these foaming ingredients are derived from non-renewable resources, and can pollute water bodies when synthetic detergents are finally discharged into rivers and lakes. Therefore, a detergent composition with these ingredients of lower content is needed. However, a difficulty in meeting this need is that the reduction of surfactant in the detergent composition significantly deteriorates the foaming properties of the detergent composition, and these compositions can provide low foam generation, or foam may not be well retained during the washing cycle. This detergent composition with poor foaming properties becomes less acceptable for consumers who attach great importance to the foaming properties of detergent compositions.

[0007] Therefore, there remains a need for a laundry cleaning composition containing an environmentally friendly composition having lower levels of synthetic detergents while providing desirable foaming characteristics, i.e., rapid generation of large amounts of well-retained foam upon dissolution of the detergent composition in the wash solution and which collapses rapidly at the end of the wash cycle to facilitate easier removal of the foam during the rinse stage.

[0008] Therefore, there is a need for a cleaning composition that reduces and preferably eliminates suds in the rinse without adversely affecting suds formation in the initial wash step.

[0009] Some solutions to the problem of foaming during the rinse phase have been provided by incorporating rinse-triggered defoamers that act on the foam and suppress it during the rinse phase. However, such rinse-triggered defoamers increase the amount of chemicals incorporated into the composition, and such compositions must be carefully formulated to avoid release of the defoamer during the cleaning phase. Furthermore, such rinse-triggered defoamers are generally expensive and do not provide other performance benefits to the composition other than foam suppression. Therefore, it is desirable to minimize their presence.

[0010] In the past, compositions have been prepared that deliver reduced foaming.

[0011] Such a composition is disclosed in US 2017 / 0292088 A1 (The Honest Company, Inc), which provides a laundry detergent composition that prevents excessive foaming in a washing machine during agitation. The detergent composition includes an alkyl isethionate as a surfactant and a defoamer.

[0012] Despite past attempts to provide detergent compositions for washing fabrics which provide desirable suds characteristics during the various washing steps, there remains a need for a solid cleaning composition which provides good suds characteristics whilst maintaining good cleaning performance.

[0013] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a solid laundry detergent composition which provides good suds characteristics.

[0014] Another object of the present invention is to provide a solid laundry detergent composition which provides good cleaning performance.

[0015] It is yet another object of the present invention to provide an environmentally friendly solid laundry detergent composition.

[0016] It is a further object of the present invention to provide a solid laundry detergent composition which reduces the amount of water required for rinsing. Summary of the invention

[0017] The present inventors have discovered that when anionic, non-soap, non-isethionate anionic surfactants are combined at specific levels with isethionate surfactants and suds suppressors in carbonate built solid laundry detergent compositions, the compositions provide excellent suds characteristics whilst maintaining good cleaning performance.

[0025] i) preparing a wash liquor having an effective amount of foam by contacting a detergent composition according to the first aspect with a liquid, preferably water;

[0026] ii) soaking the fabric surface in a wash liquor for a predetermined period of time; and

[0027] iii) optionally rinsing the fabric surface.

[0192] Example

[0193] Example 1

[0194] Different comparative detergent compositions and detergent compositions according to the present invention were prepared having the ingredients provided in Table 1. The detergent compositions used were as follows:

[0195] Comparative Example (Comp A) : This is a solid laundry detergent composition comprising anionic surfactant (LAS) and sodium carbonate builder, but free of isethionate surfactant (SCI) and without foam suppressor (silicone oil).

[0196] Comparative Example (Comp B) : This is a solid laundry detergent composition comprising anionic surfactant (LAS), sodium carbonate builder and isethionate surfactant (SCI), but does not contain foam suppressor (silicone oil).

[0197] Comparative Example (Comp C) : This is a solid detergent composition comprising anionic surfactant (LAS), sodium carbonate builder and foam suppressor (silicone oil), but does not contain isethionate surfactant (SCI).

[0198] Embodiment according to the present invention (Ex 1) : This is a solid detergent composition comprising anionic surfactant (LAS), sodium carbonate builder, foam inhibitor (silicone oil) and isethionate surfactant (SCI).

[0199] Suds Measurement Method: The suds volume generated by the various solid laundry detergent compositions described above was measured using an automated drum shaking protocol.

[0200] Automatic drum shaking solution:

[0201] In this protocol, a known amount of detergent powder is first added to a beaker containing water to form a 3 gpl washing liquid. The hardness of the water is 24°FH (Ca:Mg, 2:1). The beaker is placed on a magnetic stirrer at a speed of 150 rpm for 20 minutes to allow the detergent composition to completely dissolve in the water to form an aqueous liquid (AL).

[0202] A. In the first set of foam measurements, 40 mL of the aqueous liquid (AL) formed above was placed in a 250 mL stoppered graduated glass cylinder. The glass cylinder was marked at 2 ml intervals and had a height of 14 inches from the inside of the bottom to the 250 ml mark. Next, the cylinder was clamped in an automatic cylinder oscillator (rotating device) that clamped the cylinder relative to a rotation axis passing through the center of the graduated cylinder.

[0203] a) The cylinder was rotated at a speed of 30 revolutions per minute. The cylinder was allowed to complete 5 revolutions and stopped in a vertical position. The height of the foam from the bottom was recorded in mL and is provided in Table 1 below.

[0204] b) After recording the foam height, rotate the cylinder again and allow it to complete 5 more revolutions before stopping in the vertical position. Measure the height of the foam after 10 revolutions from the bottom and record in ml. The measured foam height is provided in Table 1 below.

[0205] B. In the second set of foam measurements, 4 mL of the prepared aqueous liquid (AL) was placed in a 250 mL stoppered graduated glass cylinder. 36 ml of water was added thereto. The hardness of the water was 24°FH (Ca:Mg, 2:1). Next, the cylinder was clamped in an automatic cylinder shaker (rotating device) and rotated for 5 and 10 revolutions, respectively, as described above, and the measured foam heights were recorded and provided in Table 1 below.

[0206] The rest time between the first and second 5-rev sequences in this set of experiments was maintained in the same manner as in the first set of experiments.

[0207] Foam measurements were similarly performed for all compositions provided in Tables 1 to 3 below.

[0208] Table 1

[0209]

[0210] As shown in the data, in the first set of experiments, which illustrate the main wash stage in the washing process where consumers expect foam, the detergent composition according to the present invention shows good foam compared to Comparative Example A (LAS without foam inhibitor) and Comparative Example C (LAS with foam inhibitor). The detergent composition according to the present invention containing a foam inhibitor shows similar foam characteristics to Comparative Example B (surfactant without foam inhibitor) in the second set of experiments. The second set of experiments illustrates the rinse stage in the washing process where foam removal is required, showing that the composition according to the present invention achieves rapid foam reduction compared to Comparative Example A or Comparative Example B. Therefore, the above group of examples clearly shows that the detergent composition according to the present invention shows good foam volume in the initial wash cycle, and thereafter it also provides the desired low foaming performance in the rinse stage, which minimizes the waste of clean water required for rinsing.

[0211] Example 2: Foam characteristics of solid laundry detergent compositions having different ratio ranges of isethionate surfactant and anionic non-isethionate surfactant

[0212] Table 2

[0213]

[0214]

[0215] As shown in Table 2, the composition according to the invention having a ratio of 1:90 of isethionate surfactant to anionic non-isethionate surfactant (Invention 2) showed good foam in the wash liquor and fast foam reduction in the rinse stage.

[0216] Table 3

[0217]

[0218]

[0219] As shown in Table 3, the composition according to the invention having a ratio of 1:9 of isethionate surfactant to anionic non-isethionate surfactant (Invention 3) exhibited good foam in the wash liquor and rapid foam reduction in the rinse phase.

[0220] Thus, the above set of examples clearly demonstrates that the detergent composition according to the present invention exhibits good foam volume in the initial wash cycle and thereafter it also provides desirable low foaming performance in the rinse phase, which minimizes the wastage of clean water required for rinsing.
