Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to medical fluid connectors, and more particularly to a fluid connector assembly including medical connectors that can be separated from each other due to a force, each medical connector being designed to automatically close their respective fluid paths. The separation may be due to intentional or unintentional separation between the medical connectors. Background Art

[0002] A peripheral intravenous ("PIVC") catheter is a medical tool that is inserted into a patient's peripheral vein to deliver medical fluids to the patient. In one exemplary application, the medical fluid is delivered to the patient, and the PIVC catheter is subsequently removed from the patient by a medical professional. However, these catheters are often displaced unintentionally. For example, catheter lines that are subjected to unintended or accidental tension may pull on intravenous (IV) tubing, thereby pulling the catheter out of the patient. In other cases, the catheter is accidentally removed from the patient and the medical professional. Unintentional or accidental displacement may result in patient blood loss, loss of IV fluid, and delays in IV fluid delivery. Summary of the invention

[0003] In accordance with at least some embodiments disclosed herein, it is recognized that inadvertent displacement or disconnection of a medical connection, such as a medical fluid line, may result in harm to a patient or medical professional, such as by depriving the patient of medication, increasing the likelihood of infection for the patient, and exposing the medical professional to drugs.

[0004] Aspects of the present disclosure provide a fluid connector assembly with a medical connector, each of which includes one or more fluid paths that respond to unintentional or unexpected external forces by separating from each other and sealing their corresponding fluid paths. Separation can include automatic separation using a bellows or other elastically compressible member that decompresses and returns to its original shape when an external force no longer acts thereon. Beneficially, the fluid connector assembly described herein can limit or prevent patient blood loss, IV fluid loss, infection, and medical delivery delays. In addition, aspects of the present disclosure provide a connecting mechanism that facilitates the connection of the fluid connector assembly when the fluid connector assembly is separated.

[0005] According to certain embodiments, a fluid connector assembly includes a first connector, a second connector, and a connecting mechanism. The second connector may be configured to be coupled to the first connector, and may include a snap member disposed on one end thereof. [0009] In some embodiments, the protrusion extends outwardly relative to the longitudinally extending central axis, and an outer surface contour of the protrusion corresponds to an inner contour of the opening of the snap member.

[0010] In some embodiments, at least a portion of the connection mechanism is coupled to an outer surface of the second connector. When a pulling surface greater than a threshold force is applied to the second connector in a direction along the central longitudinal axis, the connection mechanism can actuate the snap member to separate the first connector and the second connector, and when the first connector and the second connector are separated, at least a portion of the connection mechanism remains coupled to the second connector.

[0011] In some embodiments, the fluid connector assembly is a closed system drug delivery device.

[0012] According to certain embodiments, a method for coupling a fluid connector connection assembly includes providing a first connector, a second connector configured to be coupled to the first connector, and a connection mechanism configured to couple the first connector and the second connector. The second connector may include a snap member disposed on one end thereof. The connection mechanism may include a body and at least one protrusion extending from one end of the body. The method may include coupling one end of the connection mechanism to the second connector so that at least a portion of the connection mechanism is disposed within an opening of the snap member; and coupling the first connector to an opposite end of the connection mechanism so that the first connector, the second connector, and the coupling mechanism are in fluid communication.

[0013] In some embodiments, coupling the end of the connection mechanism to the second connector includes positioning a protrusion within an opening of a snap member so that an outer surface of at least one protrusion abuts an inner surface of the snap member in a snap-fit configuration. Additionally, separating the connection mechanism from the second connector may include actuating the snap member to provide a gap between the at least one protrusion and the inner surface, thereby allowing the connection mechanism to be removed from the opening.

[0014] In some embodiments, the connection mechanism remains coupled to the second connector by a threshold force, and the connection mechanism is decoupled from the second connector when an external force greater than the threshold force is applied to at least one of the first connector and the second connector.

[0015] In some embodiments, the connection mechanism further comprises a valve member disposed in a passage formed in the body of the connection mechanism. When the first connector and the second connector are coupled, the valve member can be configured to allow fluid communication between the first connector and the second connector. When the first connector and the second connector are separated, the valve member can be configured to prevent fluid from flowing through the passage.

[0016] According to certain embodiments, a fluid connector assembly includes a first connector, a second connector configured to be coupled to the first connector, and a connection mechanism for detachably coupling the first connector and the second connector. The second connector may be a closed system having a snap member, the snap member being provided with at least one arm protruding from one end of the snap member. The connection mechanism may include a body having a channel extending therethrough for providing fluid communication between the first connector and the second connector, a valve member disposed in the channel for controlling the flow of fluid through the channel, a first protrusion extending from the first end of the body for coupling to the first connector, and a second protrusion extending from the second end of the body for coupling to the second connector. When the connection mechanism is coupled to the second connector, at least a portion of the connection mechanism may be positioned in an opening of the snap member and affixed by the second protrusion. When the separation force exceeds a predetermined threshold, the connection mechanism may be separated from the second connector.

[0017] In some embodiments, the predetermined threshold is a pulling force of at least five pounds.

[0018] In some embodiments, the arm comprises a first snap arm protruding from a first side of the second connector and a second snap arm protruding from a second side of the second connector opposite to the first side. In addition, actuation of the first snap arm and the second snap arm can allow the connection mechanism to be separated from the second connector.

[0019] In some embodiments, the valve member is configured to allow fluid communication between the first connector and the second connector when the first connector and the second connector are coupled, and the valve member is configured to prevent fluid from flowing through the channel when the first connector and the second connector are decoupled.

[0020] In some embodiments, each of the first and second protrusions extends outwardly relative to a longitudinally extending central axis of the connection mechanism. In addition, an outer surface profile of the second protrusion may correspond to an inner profile of the opening of the snap member.

[0021] In some embodiments, the connection mechanism includes an annular member that is slidably disposed on an outer surface of the second connector and is configured to actuate the snap member. In addition, when the separation force exceeds a predetermined threshold, the annular member can slide along the second connector until the annular member is disposed on at least one arm, thereby causing actuation of the snap member. [0029] In the following detailed description, many specific details are set forth in order to provide a full understanding of the subject technology. It should be understood that the subject technology can be practiced without these specific details. In other cases, well-known structures and techniques are not shown in detail to avoid confusing the subject technology.

[0030] Furthermore, although the present specification sets forth specific details of various embodiments, it should be understood that the description is illustrative only and should not be construed as limiting in any way. Furthermore, it is contemplated that although specific embodiments of the present disclosure may be disclosed or illustrated in the context of an IV set, these embodiments may be used in other fluid delivery systems. Furthermore, various applications of such embodiments and modifications thereof that may occur to a person skilled in the art are also included in the general concepts described herein.

[0031] According to some embodiments, the present disclosure includes various features and advantages of a fluid connector assembly having a medical connector (e.g., a closed system drug transfer device (CSTD)), which seals their corresponding fluid paths when the medical connectors are separated from each other. In addition, the fluid connector assembly can be formed to prevent environmental contaminants from being transferred into the system, and to prevent dangerous drugs or vapor concentrations from escaping from the device. The medical connectors can each include a compressible member that is decompressed in response to separation, thereby providing an automatic seal of the corresponding fluid path. The fluid connector assembly can also include a connecting mechanism for connecting the components of the fluid connector assembly while also maintaining the closed system of the assembly. In addition, the connecting mechanism can be configured to disconnect from the connector of the fluid connector assembly when a threshold tension is reached, while preventing environmental contaminants from entering the system, and also preventing contained drugs or vapors from escaping, thereby protecting the closed system.

[0032] Now referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 An IV set 1 coupled to a patient 10 is shown in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The IV set 1 includes a medication bag 12, a drip chamber 14, and tubing 22. The tubing 22 extends between the drip chamber 14 and the fluid connector assembly 100 of the IV set 1. To prevent the tubing 16 or the catheter 18 from being accidentally removed or disconnected from the patient, a tape 26 is placed over the tubing 16 and the catheter 18 such that the tape 26 engages the tubing 16, the catheter 18, and the patient 10.

[0033] Figure 2 1 shows a perspective view of a fluid connector assembly 100 according to various aspects of the present disclosure. As a non-limiting example, the fluid connector assembly 100 is designed for medical applications, such as an IV set 1 (e.g., Figure 1shown) and other IV medical fluid delivery applications using catheters, including PIVC catheters.

[0034] As shown, the fluid connector assembly 100 includes a connector 102 and a connector 104 coupled to the connector 102. The connector 102 and the connector 104 may be referred to as a first connector and a second connector, respectively. However, "first" and "second" may be interchangeable. In addition, each of the connectors 102 and 104 may be referred to as a medical connector. When the connectors 102 and 104 are as shown in FIG. Figure 2 When connected to each other as shown, a fluid path for the medical fluid is established through the fluid connector assembly 100.

[0035] In some embodiments, connector 104 is connected to a medical fluid (not shown). In addition, in some embodiments, connector 102 is connected to a catheter line (not shown) that delivers the medical fluid to the catheter. In this regard, connector 104 may include a fluid inlet 106 that serves as a fluid receiving location of fluid connector assembly 100. In addition, connector 102 may include a fluid outlet 108 that serves as a fluid transmission location of fluid connector assembly 100.

[0036] To facilitate connection to the medical fluid, connector 104 may include a Luer piece. In some embodiments, the Luer piece is a female Luer piece designed to mate with a male connector connected to the medical fluid. Similarly, to facilitate connection to a catheter line, connector 102 may include a Luer piece. In some embodiments, the Luer piece is a male Luer piece designed to mate with a female Luer piece connected to the catheter line. Each Luer piece may conform to standards established by the International Organization for Standardization ("ISO") to improve patient safety, minimize leakage of medical fluids, and reduce misconnections with other connection devices.

[0037] Additionally, connector 102 may include a post 112 passing through the center or at least approximately the center of connector 102. Post 112 may include a channel 114 that establishes fluid outlet 108. While post 112 is illustrated as being cylindrical, post 112 need not be so limited and may have any suitable shape.

[0038] The connector 102 may include a housing integrated with a Luer. The connector 102 may include a first end 102A with an integrated Luer and a second end 102B opposite the first end 102A and configured to couple to the receiving ring 110. The second end 102B has a stepped profile with a protruding portion having a reduced thickness relative to the thickness of the rest of the housing.

[0039] The connector 102 may include an outer surface 102C and an inner surface 102D. The connector 102 may include a hollow or substantially hollow body that carries one or more components. For example, in addition to the pillar 112, the compressible member 116 may be accommodated in the connector 102. The connector 102 may also include a wall 120 that extends transversely through the interior of the connector 102, thereby dividing the interior of the connector 102 into separate cavities 122, 124. The pillar 112 may be integrally formed with the wall 120 and extend through each cavity 122, 124. The pillar 112 may include an open first end 120A, a closed second end 120B opposite the first end 120A, and a channel 114 extending through the pillar 112. The first end 120A may include an opening for the channel 114, which forms a fluid outlet 108. The second end 120B of the pillar 112 may be a substantially closed end and include one or more holes, also referred to as flow windows 128.

[0040] The connector 102 may also include a receiving ring 110 disposed at and coupled to a second end 102B of the connector 102. The receiving ring 110 may include a first end 110A configured to be coupled to the second end 102B and a second end 110B opposite the first end 110A. The first end 110A of the receiving ring 110 may have a stepped profile having a protrusion 130 complementary to the protrusion of the connector 102. The second end 110B of the receiving ring 110 may include an opening 132. The receiving ring 110 may have an outer surface 110C and an inner surface 110D. The receiving ring 110 may include one or more notches 144 formed along the outer surface 110C.

[0041] As described above, the connector 102 may include a compressible member 116, also referred to as a silicone valve, disposed within the interior of the connector 102. The compressible member 116 may be disposed within the cavity 124 and extend through the receiving ring 110. The compressible member 116 has a first end 116A and a second end 116B, the first end being positioned proximate to the surface of the wall 120, and the second end being positioned within the opening 132 of the receiving ring 110 and configured to engage a component of the connector 104. The second end 116B may include an engagement surface 134. The engagement surface 134 may provide a flat or substantially flat surface that may be easily accessible for cleaning and disinfection. The engagement surface 134 may further include an opening 136. In some embodiments, the opening 136 may be formed as one or more slits or holes. The pillar 112 may extend through the compressible member 116. In other words, the compressible member 116 may extend around the outer surface of the pillar 112. The second end 112B of the pillar 112 may be positioned within an area formed proximate to the second end 112B of the compressible member 116.

[0042] In some embodiments, the compressible member 116 comprises a bellows that can be elastically compressed. Therefore, the compressible member 116 can be compressed by an external force and then return to its original uncompressed form when the external force is removed. The compressible member 116 can be designed to regulate the flow of fluid through the connector 102.

[0043] like Figure 2 As shown, the connector 104 can be a CSTD, which includes a first end 104A configured to mate with the connector 102 when coupled and a second end 104B opposite the first end 104A. The connector 104 can include an outer surface 104C and an inner surface 104D. The connector can include a channel 138 extending through the interior of the connector 104. The connector 104 can also include a spring member 166 disposed inside the connector 104.

[0044] In some embodiments, the connector 104 may further include a connector interface 140 coupled to the second end 104B of the connector 104. The connector interface 140 may include a first end 140A configured to be coupled to the connector 104 and a second end 140B opposite to the first end 140A. The connector interface 140 may be securely coupled to the second end 104B of the connector 104 in any suitable manner to prevent the closed state of the connector 104 from being maintained. For example, the connector interface 140 may be threadedly coupled to the second end 104B. The connector interface 140 may include a channel 142 extending through the connector interface 140 and providing a passage for the needle 20. In some embodiments, the connector interface 140 may provide a channel 142 that allows the needle 20 to be completely enclosed, thereby preventing needle exposure and accidental needle sticks. The connector interface 140 may include an outer surface 140C and an inner surface 140D. The outer surface 140C may also include one or more protrusions 146 extending radially from the outer surface 140C.

[0045] The connector 104 may also include a snap member 148, also referred to as a snap release. The snap member 148 may be disposed at the first end 104A of the connector 104. The snap member 148 may include a first end 148A, a second end 148B opposite to the first end, an outer surface 148C, and an inner surface 148D. The snap member 148 may include a plurality of snap arms 150 positioned on the outer surface 148C of the snap member 148. In some embodiments, the snap arm 150 may be formed integrally with the snap member 148. In other embodiments, the snap arm 150 may be formed independently of the main body of the snap member 148 and connected via any suitable means. The snap arm 150 may include a first end 150A connected to the main body of the snap member or formed integrally therewith, and a second end 150B opposite to the first end 150A. The second end 150B can be positioned near the outer surface 104C of the connector 104 but spaced apart therefrom so that a gap 152 is formed between the inner surface of the snap arm 150 and the outer surface 104C of the connector 104. The snap arm 150 can be flexible so that the second end 150B can bend inwardly relative to the outer surface 104C, thereby reducing the size of the gap 152 when the fluid connector assembly 100 is separated. The first end 148A of the snap arm may include an opening 156 for receiving the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500. The opening 156 may include a side 158 forming a perimeter of the opening 156. The shape and size of the side 158 may correspond to a portion of the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500. In addition, the side 158 may be formed as a profile having one or more notches or depressions for receiving the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500, which will be described in more detail below.

[0046] The connector 104 may include a valve assembly 160 coupled to the first end 104A of the connector 104. The valve assembly 160 may include a compartment 162 having one or more compressible members, also referred to as an elastic plug 164, disposed within the compartment 162. The size and shape of the valve assembly 160 may completely fill the opening formed at the first end 104A of the connector 104. In some embodiments, the valve assembly 160 is formed integrally with the connector 104. In other embodiments, the valve assembly 160 is formed separately and coupled to the connector 104 via any suitable means to maintain a closed system. For example, the valve assembly 160 may be threadedly coupled. The valve assembly 160 may be coupled to the snap member 148 at the opposite end. In some embodiments, the valve assembly 160 is substantially contained within the snap member 148.

[0047] As described above, the valve assembly 160 may include one or more compressible members 164. In some embodiments, the valve assembly 160 has a first compressible member 164A and a second compressible member 164B housed in the interior cavity of the compartment 162. The first compressible member 164A may be positioned proximate to the snap member 148, and the second compressible member 164B may be positioned opposite the first compressible member 164A. The fluid flowing through the fluid inlet 106 may pass through the compressible members 164A, 164B via holes formed in the compressible members 164A, 164B. In addition, as shown in FIG. Figure 2 As shown, compressible members 164A, 164B can be configured to allow needle 20 to pass through valve assembly 160 to provide drug delivery through connector 104. In some embodiments, each compressible member 164A, 164B includes a bellows that can be elastically compressed. Therefore, compressible members 164A, 164B can be compressed by an external force and then return to their original uncompressed form when the external force is removed. Compressible members 164A, 164B are designed to regulate the flow of fluid through connector 104.

[0048] based on Figure 2 164A, 164B, the connector 104 can prevent fluid from flowing through. In other words, due to the positioning and expansion state of the compressible members 164A, 164B, the fluid entering through the fluid inlet 106 can be blocked from passing through.

[0049] To facilitate the passage of fluid through the connectors 102 , 104 , when the fluid connector assembly 100 is assembled, the corresponding compressible members 116 , 164A, 164B may be actuated or displaced to expose corresponding openings in the connectors 102 , 104 .

[0050] In some embodiments, a fluid including a medical fluid can pass through the fluid connector assembly 100 downstream from the connector 104 to the connector 102 within a closed system. The fluid can enter the fluid inlet 106 and then pass through the compressible members 164A, 164B. The fluid can then pass through the opening 128 of the support 112 and then through the channel 126 of the support 112. The fluid can exit the fluid connector assembly 100 through the fluid outlet 108.

[0051] As described above, separation of the connectors 102 and 104 may be caused by an external force applied to one or more of the connectors 102 and 104 , where the external force exceeds a threshold force required to maintain a connection between the connectors 102 and 104 .

[0052] When the connectors 102, 104 are separated, the forces applied to the compressible members 116, 164 of the connectors 102, 104, respectively, can be removed so that the compressible members 116, 164 can be decompressed and expanded so that the compressible members 116, 164 return to their original shapes. For example, during expansion of the compressible member 116, the second end 116B of the compressible member 116 can move toward the second end 110B of the receiving ring 110 until the compressible member 116 has returned to its original shape so that the second end 116B is positioned within the opening 132 of the receiving ring 110. Similarly, during expansion of the compressible member 164, the first end 160A can move toward the first end 104A until the compressible member 164 has returned to its original shape so that the first end is positioned within the opening of the connector 104. As a result, fluid may be unable to flow upstream through the connector 102 and through the opening formed in the strut 112.

[0053] Each of the compressible members 116 and 164 can be used as a valve to regulate the flow of fluid through the fluid connector assembly 100. Based on their elastic, spring-like properties, each of the compressible members 116 and 164 can automatically return to their respective shapes when external forces are no longer acting on them. Advantageously, the compressible members 116 and 164 can rebound in response to the separation between the connectors 102 and 104 to provide a relatively rapid sealing effect. Therefore, when the fluid connector assembly 100 is integrated into an IV set and catheter, blood loss, IV fluid loss, and drug delivery delays can be limited or prevented based on one or more characteristics of the compressible members 116 and 164.

[0054] In some embodiments, the fluid connector assembly 100 may further include a connection mechanism 200 , 300 , 400 , 500 for coupling the connectors 102 , 104 .

[0055] Referring to FIG. 3 , the connection mechanism 200 may include a body 202 composed of two halves 204, 206 (also referred to as a first side and a second side, respectively). Each of the first side 204 and the second side 206 may include a first end 204A, 206A, respectively, and a second end 204B, 206B opposite to the first end 204A, 206A, respectively. The body 202 may also include a channel 208 extending therethrough for providing fluid communication between the connectors 102, 104. The connection mechanism 200 may include a valve, also referred to as a plug member 210, disposed in the channel 208. The valve 210 may regulate the flow of fluid through the channel 208. For example, when the connectors 102, 104 are coupled, the valve 210 may allow the fluid to flow through the channel 208. Conversely, when the connectors 102, 104 are not coupled, the valve 210 may prevent the fluid from flowing through the channel 208. The connection mechanism 200 may also include one or more protrusions 212, 214. In some embodiments, each of the first side 204 and the second side 206 includes a first protrusion 212 disposed on the first end 204A, 206A and a second protrusion 214 disposed on the second end 204B, 206B. The first protrusion 212 can be configured to be coupled to the connector 102. The first protrusion 212 can include an inwardly extending portion that protrudes toward the longitudinally extending central axis of the connection mechanism 200. The size and shape of the inwardly extending portion of the first protrusion 212 can correspond to the recess 144 of the receiving ring to couple the connection mechanism 200 to the connector 104. The second protrusion 214 can include an outwardly extending portion that protrudes away from the longitudinally extending central axis of the connection mechanism 200. The size and shape of the outwardly extending portion can correspond to the side 158 of the snap member 148.

[0056] To separate the connection mechanism 200 from the connector 104, the user can actuate the snap arm 150 by applying pressure to the snap arm 150, thereby providing clearance between the second protrusion 214 and the interior of the side 158 of the snap member 148. When sufficient clearance has been provided, the user can remove the connection mechanism 200 from the connector 102.

[0057] refer to Figure 4, the fluid connection assembly may include a connection mechanism 300. Similar to the above-mentioned connection mechanism 200, the connection mechanism 300 may include a body 302 having two halves (also referred to as a first side 304 and a second side 306). Each of the first side 304 and the second side 306 may include a first end 304A, 306A, respectively, and a second end 304B, 306B opposite to the first end 304A, 306A, respectively. The body 302 may also include a channel 308 extending therethrough for providing fluid communication between the connectors 102 and 104. The connection mechanism 300 may include a valve, also referred to as a one-way valve 310, disposed in the channel 308. The valve 310 may regulate the flow of fluid through the channel 308. For example, when the connectors 102 and 104 are coupled, the valve 310 may allow the fluid to flow through the channel 308. Conversely, when the connectors 102 and 104 are not coupled, the valve 310 may prevent the fluid from flowing through the channel 308. The connection mechanism 300 may also include one or more protrusions 312, 314. In some embodiments, each of the first side portion 304 and the second side portion 306 includes a first protrusion 312 disposed on the first end portion 304A, 306A and a second protrusion 314 disposed on the second end portion 304B, 306B. The first protrusion 312 may be configured to be coupled to the connector 102. The first protrusion 312 may include an outwardly extending portion that protrudes toward the longitudinally extending central axis of the connection mechanism 300. The size and shape of the first protrusion 312 may correspond to the opening 132 of the receiving ring 110. When the connection mechanism 300 is coupled to the connector 102, one end of the first protrusion 312 may contact the compressible member 116. The first protrusion may help compress the compressible member 116 to allow fluid flow. The second protrusion 314 may include an outwardly extending portion that protrudes away from the longitudinally extending central axis of the connection mechanism 300. The outwardly extending portion may correspond in size and shape to the side 158 of the snap member 148 .

[0058] As described above with respect to connection mechanism 200 , to decouple connection mechanism 300 from connector 104 , a user may actuate snap arm 150 by applying pressure to snap arm 150 to provide sufficient clearance between second protrusion 314 and the interior of side 158 of snap member 148 .

[0059] refer to Figures 5A-5C, the connection mechanism 400 may include a body 402 disposed on the outer surface 104C of the connector 104. The connection mechanism 400 may include a first end 402A disposed near the snap member 148 and a second end 402B disposed opposite the first end 402A and near the connector interface 140. The first end 402A may include a ring 404 that surrounds at least a portion of the snap arm 150. The size of the ring 404 may be set so that there is only a slight gap between the inner surface of the ring 404 and the outer surface of the snap arm 150. The second end 402B may include a combination cavity 406 and may surround the connector interface 140. The combination cavity 406 may be coupled to the tubing 22 of the IV set 1. The combination cavity 406 may be coupled via any suitable means, including but not limited to gluing. The body 402 may also include one or more notches or detents 408 to cooperate with the protrusion 146 of the connector interface 140, thereby further fixing the connection mechanism 400 to the connector 104. In some embodiments, a majority of the connector 104 is not surrounded by the connection mechanism 400. The connection mechanism 400 can be configured to slide along the connector 104 a certain distance.

[0060] The connection mechanism 400 can work with the connection mechanism 300. When assembled, the connection mechanism 400 is fixed to the connector 104, wherein the ring 404 is disposed proximate to the first end 148A of the snap member 148. At the same time, as described above, the connection mechanism 300 can be coupled to the connectors 102, 104, thereby providing fluid communication between the connectors 102, 104. With sufficient force to pull the tubular 22 in a direction away from the second end 104B of the connector 104, the connection mechanism 400 can slide relative to the connector 104. In particular, the ring 404 can slide from the first end 150A to the second end 150B in a direction along the snap arm 150. When the snap arm 150 is tilted in a direction away from the central longitudinal axis of the connector 104, the ring 404 can slide until the inner surface of the ring 404 abuts the outer surface of the snap arm 150 and is prevented from further movement due to friction. When the ring 404 reaches the stopping point, which may be proximate the second end 150B, pressure applied from the ring 404 may compress the snap arms 150 , thereby separating the connection mechanism 300 from the opening 156 of the snap member 148 .

[0061] If the user wishes to purposefully separate the connection mechanism 300 from the connector 104, the user may perform the steps described above with respect to the connection mechanisms 200, 300. In other words, the user may actuate the snap arm 150 by applying pressure to the snap arm 150 to provide sufficient clearance between the second protrusion 314 and the interior of the side 158 of the snap member 148. Alternatively, the user may pull the connection mechanism 400 from a position proximate the second end 402B until the ring 404 provides sufficient force to the snap arm 150 to separate the connection mechanism 300.

[0062] refer to Figure 6 , the connection mechanism 500 may include a body 502 having a first end 502A configured to be coupled to the connector 102 and a second end 502B opposite the first end 502A and configured to be coupled to the connector 104. The body 502 may also include a channel 504 extending therethrough for providing fluid communication between the connectors 102, 104. The channel 504 may include a forward portion 506 for accommodating a valve, also referred to as a plug member 508, disposed within the forward portion 506. As described above, with respect to the connection mechanism 200, the valve 508 may regulate the flow of fluid through the channel 504. The connection mechanism 500 may also include a protrusion 510 disposed at the second end 502B. The protrusion 510 may be formed as a male luer and configured to contact and couple to the connector 102. When the connection mechanism 500 is coupled to the connector 102, one end of the protrusion 510 may contact the compressible member 116. The first protrusion may help compress the compressible member 116 to allow fluid flow. The forward portion 506 may be sized and shaped to be received within the opening 156 of the snap member 148 .

[0063] The connection mechanism 500 can be separated in the same manner as described above with respect to the connection mechanisms 200, 300, 400. In other words, the user can apply pressure to the snap arm 150 to provide sufficient clearance to remove the connection mechanism 500 from within the snap member.

[0064] In use, the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500 and the connector 104 can remain coupled until subjected to a separation force. The separation force can pull the connector 102 away from the connector 104 and the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500, or pull the connector 104 and the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500 away from the connector 102. When the connector 102, 104 and the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500 are coupled, the separation force can act along the central axis of the connector and the connection mechanism. The separation force can be a resultant force acting along the central axis of the connector and the connection mechanism when the connector 102, 104 and the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500 are coupled, or a force acting on the connector 102, 104 or a force acting on the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500, or a force acting on the first portion of the pipe or the second portion of the pipe.

[0065] When the separation force exceeds a predetermined threshold force, the separation force may separate the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500 from the connector 104. For example, if the separation force is less than the predetermined threshold force, the connection mechanism 200, 300, 400, 500 may not be separated from the connector 104. The predetermined threshold force prevents unintentional or accidental separation based on small forces or movements. When the connectors 102, 104 are unintentionally separated, the connection mechanism 200, 300, 500 may remain coupled to the connector 102.

[0066] In some embodiments, the predetermined threshold force is approximately 5 pounds (lbs). The predetermined threshold force can be from approximately 1 lb to approximately 8 lbs, approximately 3 lbs to approximately 7 lbs, approximately 4 lbs to approximately 6 lbs, or greater than 8 lbs.

[0067] Features of the present disclosure provide a first compressible member and a second compressible member that can be used as valves to regulate a fluid passage between them. The first compressible member and the second compressible member are located in the first connector and the second connector, respectively. If the first connector and the second connector are separated, whether accidentally or intentionally, the fluid passage for each of the first compressible member and the second compressible member is closed or blocked to prevent fluid loss therefrom. Features of the present disclosure also provide that when the first compressible member and the second compressible member are separated, any one of the first compressible member and the second compressible member can be cleaned and disinfected, and the first compressible member and the second compressible member can be connected together again to form a fluid passage between them.
