Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to oral care compositions comprising a sunscreen. The present invention also relates to opaque oral care compositions such as toothpaste and / or dentifrice compositions that do not contain titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and / or combinations thereof. The present invention also relates to oral care compositions such as toothpaste and / or dentifrice compositions that contain boron nitride as a sunscreen. The present invention also relates to oral care compositions such as toothpaste and / or dentifrice compositions that contain boron nitride as the sole sunscreen. Background Art

[0002] Typically, toothpaste compositions are formulated into a single-phase aqueous matrix or a single-phase non-aqueous matrix. In many cases, ingredients are added to toothpaste compositions, which can cause the toothpaste to have an unattractive cloudy appearance, neither completely translucent nor completely opaque. Therefore, traditional sunscreens such as titanium dioxide, which are usually insoluble particles, are added to the formulation to make the paste composition have a consistent opaque and / or white appearance. However, many consumers believe that some traditional sunscreens such as titanium dioxide may be harmful to health due to their particle size or are considered unsafe due to other biological reasons. Titanium dioxide has been banned in all foods in the European market, and several regulations are paying attention to banning titanium dioxide in personal and health care products.

[0003] Therefore, there is a need for a toothpaste composition having suitable opacity without the incorporation of traditional opacifiers such as titanium dioxide. There is also a need for new opacifiers for use in oral care compositions.

[0004] In addition, oral care compositions include a variety of components that can interact with each other. Many insoluble compounds that can be used as sunscreens can interact with other components of the oral care composition, such as fluoride and stannous. Therefore, there is a need for sunscreens that do not react with other components of the oral care composition or are inert in their reactivity. Summary of the invention

[0014] The present invention relates to oral care compositions containing boron nitride having suitable opacity. Many traditional sunscreens are considered to have health risks, therefore, the present application relates to the use of boron nitride as a sunscreen to replace traditional sunscreens such as titanium dioxide and / or zinc oxide. Unexpectedly, it has been found that toothpastes containing boron nitride provide suitable opacity while maintaining acceptable levels of fluoride and stannous ions.

In some cases, a compound may fall into one or more sections. For example, stannous fluoride may be a tin compound and / or a fluoride compound.

[0023] Boron Nitride

[0024] The present invention relates to oral care compositions such as toothpaste and / or dentifrice compositions comprising boron nitride as an opacifier. Typically, toothpaste compositions are formulated as a single-phase aqueous matrix or a single-phase non-aqueous matrix. In many cases, ingredients are added to toothpaste compositions, which can result in a toothpaste having an unattractive cloudy appearance, neither completely translucent nor completely opaque. Therefore, traditional opacifiers such as titanium dioxide, which are typically insoluble particles, are added to the formulation to give the paste composition a consistent opaque and / or white appearance. However, many consumers believe that certain traditional opacifiers such as titanium dioxide may be harmful to health due to their particle size.

[0025] Thus, the present invention relates to the use of boron nitride as a sunscreen. Boron nitride can be added to oral care compositions containing lower amounts of titanium dioxide and / or zinc oxide, or boron nitride can be used to completely replace titanium dioxide and / or zinc oxide. Boron nitride can also be mixed with other sunscreens such as calcium pyrophosphate, bismuth oxychloride, mica, EGDS, sericite, or combinations thereof.

[0026] Boron nitride can be a compound containing equal amounts of boron and nitrogen atoms in various crystalline forms, which are well known to those of ordinary skill in the art. Boron nitride can be amorphous (a-boron nitride), hexagonal (h-boron nitride), cubic (c-boron nitride), wurtzite (w-boron nitride), and / or combinations thereof.

[0027] Boron nitride may also have metal ions such as sodium, potassium, calcium, tin, zinc, and / or combinations thereof intercalated between the boron nitride sheets.

[0028] The boron nitride can have an average particle size of from about 0.5 microns to about 100 microns, from about 1 micron to about 50 microns, or from about 2 microns or from about 30 microns.

[0029] The oral care composition may comprise from about 0.001 to about 10%, from about 0.01% to about 5%, or from about 0.1% to about 2%, by weight of the oral care composition, of boron nitride.

[0030] The oral care composition and / or toothpaste composition comprising boron nitride can have an opacity that is about the same as or greater than that of an oral care composition and / or toothpaste composition comprising titanium dioxide and / or zinc oxide. The opaque toothpaste comprising boron nitride can have a whiteness value (*L) of about 40 to 100, about 60 to 100, or about 75 to 100.

[0031] Additionally, boron nitride can be inert and / or have minimal interaction with other oral care actives (such as fluoride, tin, zinc, polyphosphates, dicarboxylic acids, peroxides, amino acids, or combinations thereof) and / or abrasives. Each oral care active is described in more detail in the following sections.

[0032] Calcium pyrophosphate

[0033] The present invention relates to oral care compositions such as toothpaste and / or dentifrice compositions which may contain calcium pyrophosphate as an opacifying agent.

[0034] The present invention relates to oral care compositions such as toothpaste and / or dentifrice compositions comprising boron nitride as an opacifier.

[0035] Thus, the present invention may relate to the use of calcium pyrophosphate as a sunscreen. Calcium pyrophosphate may be added to oral care compositions containing lower amounts of titanium dioxide and / or zinc oxide, or boron nitride may be used to completely replace titanium dioxide and / or zinc oxide. Calcium pyrophosphate may also be mixed with other sunscreens such as boron nitride, bismuth oxychloride, mica, EGDS, sericite, or combinations thereof.

[0036] Although not wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that calcium pyrophosphate from a particular source is sufficiently compatible with fluoride and / or tin for use in oral care compositions comprising fluoride and / or tin. Calcium pyrophosphate has at least three polymorphic phases: α, β and γ. Surprisingly, it has been found that calcium pyrophosphate with a higher proportion of β phase is more compatible with fluoride and / or tin while providing a suitable whiteness value. An opaque toothpaste comprising β calcium pyrophosphate can have a whiteness value (*L) of about 40 to 100, about 60 to 100, or about 75 to 100.

[0037] The oral care composition may comprise from about 0.001 to about 10%, from about 0.01% to about 5%, or from about 0.1% to about 2% beta calcium pyrophosphate, by weight of the oral care composition.

[0038] The calcium pyrophosphate can include at least about 30%, at least about 40%, at least about 50%, and / or at least about 75% of the calcium pyrophosphate in the beta phase, based on the weight of the calcium pyrophosphate.

[0039] Oral Care Actives

[0040] The oral care composition may combine boron nitride and / or beta-calcium pyrophosphate with one or more oral care actives including, but not limited to, fluoride, metals, tin, zinc, dicarboxylic acids, peroxides, amino acids, and / or hops, as further described herein.

Polyphosphates are a class of substances obtained by dehydrating and condensing orthophosphates to generate linear and cyclic polyphosphates of different chain lengths, such as phytic acid. Therefore, polyphosphate molecules are usually identified by the average number (n) of polyphosphate molecules, as described below. Although some cyclic derivatives may exist, it is generally believed that polyphosphates consist of two or more phosphate molecules arranged primarily in a linear configuration.

[0065] Preferred polyphosphates are those having an average of two or more phosphate groups so that surface adsorption at an effective concentration produces sufficient unbound phosphate functional groups, which enhances the anionic surface charge and the hydrophilic nature of the surface. Preferred in the present invention are linear polyphosphates having the formula: XO(XPO3) n X, wherein X is sodium, potassium, ammonium, or any other alkali metal cation, and n is, on average, from about 2 to about 21, from about 2 to about 14, or from about 2 to about 7. Alkaline earth metal cations, such as calcium, are not preferred because they tend to form insoluble fluoride salts from aqueous solutions containing fluoride ions and alkaline earth metal cations. Thus, the oral care compositions disclosed herein can be free of or substantially free of calcium pyrophosphate.

[0066] Some examples of suitable polyphosphate molecules include, for example, pyrophosphate (n=2), tripolyphosphate (n=3), tetrapolyphosphate (n=4), sodium polyphosphate (n=6), hexapolyphosphate (n=13), benzene polyphosphate (n=14), hexametaphosphate (n=21), also known as Glass H. Alternatively, the oral care composition may be substantially free, essentially free, or free of polyphosphate. The oral care composition may be substantially free, essentially free, or free of cyclic polyphosphates. The oral care composition may be substantially free, essentially free, or free of phytic acid, which may result in insoluble tin and / or zinc compounds.

[0103]

[0104] Suitable hop beta acids may include lupulones, lupulones, addululones and / or mixtures thereof. Suitable hop beta acids may include compounds described in Formula III, VII, VIII and / or IX.

[0105]

[0106]

[0107] Although hop alpha acids can exhibit some antibacterial activity, hop alpha acids also have a bitter taste. The bitter taste provided by hop alpha acids may be suitable for use in beer, but not in oral care compositions. In contrast, hop beta acids may be associated with higher antibacterial and / or anticaries activity, but the taste is less bitter. Therefore, hop extracts having a higher ratio of beta acids to alpha acids than is typically found in nature may be suitable for use in oral care compositions as antibacterial and / or anticaries agents.

[0108] Depending on the type of hops, the natural hop source can include about 2% to about 12% hop beta acids by weight of the hop source. Hop extracts used in other cases, such as in the brewing of beer, can include about 15% to about 35% hop beta acids by weight of the extract. Hop extracts required herein can include at least about 35%, at least about 40%, at least about 45%, about 35% to about 95%, about 40% to about 90%, or about 45% to about 99% hop beta acids. Hop beta acids can be in acidic form (that is, with a hydrogen atom connected to a hydroxyl functional group) or in salt form.

[0109] Suitable hop extracts are described in detail in U.S. Pat. No. 7,910,140, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. The desired hop beta acids may be non-hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated by a non-naturally occurring chemical reaction, or hydrogenated by a non-naturally occurring chemical reaction. Hop beta acids may be substantially free of or essentially free of hydrogenated hop beta acids and / or hop acids. Non-naturally occurring chemical reactions are chemical reactions performed with the aid of compounds not present in hops, such as chemical hydrogenation reactions performed at high temperatures and / or metal catalysts that wild hops would not normally experience.

[0110] Natural hop sources may contain about 2% to about 12% hop alpha acids by weight of the hop source. Hop extracts used in other situations, such as in the brewing of beer, may contain about 15% to about 35% hop alpha acids by weight of the extract. Hop extracts desired herein may contain less than about 10%, less than about 5%, less than about 1%, or less than about 0.5% hop alpha acids by weight of the extract.

[0111] Hop oils may contain terpene hydrocarbons such as myrcene, humulene, caryophyllene and / or mixtures thereof. Hop extracts desired herein may contain less than 5%, less than 2.5%, or less than 2% of one or more hop oils by weight of the extract.

[0112] The flavonoids present in the hop extract may include xanthohumol, 8-prenylnaringenin, isoxanthohumol and / or mixtures thereof. The hop extract may be substantially free, essentially free, free or have less than 250 ppm, less than 150 ppm and / or less than 100 ppm of one or more flavonoids.

[0113] Hops acids have previously been added to oral care compositions as described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,370,863. However, the oral care compositions taught in U.S. Pat. No. 5,370,863 contain only up to 0.01% by weight of the oral care composition. Although not wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that U.S. Pat. No. 5,370,863 can only incorporate small amounts of hop acids because hop alpha acids have a bitter taste. Hops extracts with low levels of hop alpha acids do not have this problem.

[0114] The hops compounds may be combined with or without an extract of another plant, such as a Magnolia species. The hops compounds may be combined with or without triclosan.

[0115] The oral care composition may include about 0.01% to about 10%, greater than 0.01% to about 10%, about 0.05%, to about 10%, about 0.1% to about 10%, about 0.2% to about 10%, about 0.2% to about 10%, about 0.2% to about 5%, about 0.25% to about 2%, about 0.05% to about 2%, or greater than 0.25% to about 2% of hops, such as hop beta acids, as described herein. Hops, such as hop beta acids, may be provided by suitable hop extracts, the hop plant itself, or synthetically derived compounds. Hops, such as hop beta acids, may be provided as neutral, acidic compounds, and / or as salts with suitable counterions such as sodium, potassium, ammonia, or any other suitable counterions.

[0116] Hops can be provided by a hop extract, such as an extract from hops having at least 35% hop beta acids by weight of the extract and less than 1% hop alpha acids by weight of the hop extract. The oral care composition can include 0.01% to about 10%, greater than 0.01% to about 10%, about 0.05%, to about 10%, about 0.1% to about 10%, about 0.2% to about 10%, about 0.2% to about 10%, about 0.2% to about 5%, about 0.25% to about 2%, about 0.05% to about 2%, or greater than 0.25% to about 2% of a hop extract, as described herein.

[0125] Example

[0126] The following examples further describe and demonstrate embodiments within the scope of the present invention. These examples are provided for illustrative purposes only and should not be construed as limitations of the present invention, as many variations are possible without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. Unless otherwise indicated, all exemplified amounts are concentrations by weight of the total composition, i.e., wt / wt percentages.

[0127] Opaque toothpaste composition

[0128] The control toothpaste and Examples 1-17 were prepared by mixing a toothpaste base (see Table ID for identification of toothpaste base) with one or more potential sunscreens, silicon dioxide, and flavoring agents. The control toothpaste did not contain any sunscreen.

[0129] Whiteness

[0130] The whiteness of the toothpaste compositions described in Tables 1 to 2 (control toothpaste and Examples 1-17) was determined using the CIE color model. The L*a*b* color readings of these compositions were evaluated using a handheld (portable) Smart Probe 400 colorimeter (IMS Inc.). A portable colorimeter is a color measurement instrument used for psychophysical analysis, which measures human eye-brain perception. The colorimetric data is read directly and provided as tristimulus values - X, Y, Z. The Lab values are calculated based on the tristimulus values.

[0131] The CIE L*a*b* color model (Lab) method is used to quantify toothpaste whiteness. The lightness (whiteness) component (L*) value can range from 0-100. Typically, toothpastes containing TiO2 have L* values close to 90. Desirable compositions disclosed herein include compositions with L* values of about 40 to 100, about 60 to 100, about 75 to 100, at least about 60, or at least about 75 that are white / opaque enough for consumer acceptance.

[0132] Fluoride Compatibility

[0133] Fluoride compatibility was determined by first preparing stannous fluoride and sodium gluconate stock solutions. 0.34 g of stannous fluoride, 0.48 g of sodium gluconate, and 74.3 g of water were mixed in a polypropylene bottle. The mixture was stirred at room temperature until all solids were dissolved. The target fluoride concentration was 1100 μg / g F-.

[0134] Next, prepare a 0.2N EDTA / 0.2N THAM buffer solution by weighing 74.4 g of disodium EDTA into a 1000 mL beaker, adding 24.2 g of THAM (2-amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol) and approximately 800 mL of water. Stir the mixture until all solids are dissolved. Once the solution has equilibrated to room temperature, adjust the pH to 7.95-8.05 using 50% w / w NaOH, quantitatively transfer to a 1000 mL volumetric flask, dilute and mix thoroughly.

[0135] Fluoride working calibration standards were prepared from a 1000 ppm F-standard stock solution by diluting with EDTA / THAM buffer to target concentrations of 10, 50 and 100 μg / g F.

[0136] Prepare the test composition by weighing 3.49-3.51 g of the test composition into a sample cup equipped with a lid. Add 14.95-15.05 g of the stannous fluoride / sodium gluconate stock solution to the cup and mix.

[0137] A standard composition was prepared by adding only 14.95-15.05 g of stannous fluoride / sodium gluconate to a sample cup with a lid.

[0138] The prepared test composition and the prepared standard composition were stored at 60°C for 2 hours while rotating. The composition was removed from the storage device and centrifuged at a speed of 25000 RCF for 15 minutes. The clear supernatant was identified after centrifugation. 1.48-1.52 g of the separated clear supernatant was mixed with 13.47-13.53 g of additional EDTA / THAM buffer solution. A pre-calibrated fluoride electrode was placed in the solution and the concentration of fluoride ions was read.

[0139] Fluoride compatibility was determined using Formula A below.

[0153]

[0154] Table 2A. Whiteness of toothpaste compositions

[0155]

[0156] Table 2B. Fluoride Compatibility

[0157]

[0158] Several sunscreens were screened for whiteness in Table 2A: calcium pyrophosphate, beta-calcium pyrophosphate, EGDS, bismuth oxychloride, sericite, mica, boron nitride, and / or combinations thereof. Ineffective sunscreens were screened out using an initial target *L value of 75. Only boron nitride, calcium pyrophosphate, and bismuth oxychloride were identified as having whiteness values high enough to effectively replace titanium dioxide and / or zinc oxide.

[0159] Calcium pyrophosphate (Example 1) has an *L of 74.3, but starting from a target fluoride amount of 1100 ppm, has low soluble fluoride numbers initially (702 ppm) and at 30 days (589 ppm). Therefore, calcium pyrophosphate (Example 1) is not compatible enough with fluoride to be used as an opacifier in a fluoride-containing toothpaste product.

[0160] The calcium pyrophosphate that is primarily in the β-phase (Example 2) has a slightly higher whiteness value of 75.7, but starting from a target fluoride level of 1100 ppm, has a much higher soluble fluoride number initially (814 ppm) and at 30 days (827 ppm). Therefore, the β-calcium pyrophosphate (Example 2) is sufficiently compatible with fluoride to be used as an opacifier in a fluoride-containing toothpaste product.

[0161] Bismuth oxychloride (Example 8 and Example 9) had whiteness values (*L) of 75.8 and 80.9 and high levels of fluoride compatibility (97.9% and 100.8%).

[0162] Boron nitride (Examples 13-17) has a whiteness value (*L) ranging from 69.6 to 86.5. The whiteness value is 86.5 at 1% boron nitride (2 μm, Example 13). In addition, boron nitride is unexpectedly stable with fluorides, showing 94%-96% fluoride compatibility, depending on the average diameter of the boron nitride particles. Therefore, boron nitride unexpectedly provides suitable whiteness and fluoride compatibility, so that boron nitride can replace titanium dioxide and / or zinc oxide alone or in part as a sunscreen in toothpaste.
