Abstract
Description
[0001] Cross-reference to priority application
[0002] This U.S. nonprovisional application hereby claims the benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 62 / 098,072 (filed on December 30, 2014) for Real-Time Adjustable Window Feature for Barcode Scanning and Process of Scanning Barcode with Adjustable Window Feature, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Technical Field
[0003] The present invention relates to a mobile barcode scanning device and a process of scanning a barcode. Background Art
[0004] A common problem with barcode scanning systems occurs when multiple barcodes are close to each other and the user wants to scan only one of the barcodes. Most barcode decoding solutions are unable to target a specific barcode within the field of view when other barcodes are nearby, so all barcode decode information may be returned to the business logic.
[0005] One solution to this problem relies on business logic to discern which barcode is required, but sometimes this may not be possible due to the similarity of the barcodes being scanned.
[0006] Another solution to this problem may be to define a window within the field of view of the barcode scanning device, within which decoding can occur only. However, this solution is not very flexible and may need to be resized frequently.
[0007] Therefore, a need exists for a bar code scanning process and apparatus that can be flexibly adjusted to scan only desired bar codes. Summary of the invention
[0008] Thus, in one aspect, the present invention includes a feature on a mobile barcode scanning device for flexibly adjusting a barcode scanning window in real time.
[0009] An embedded camera and a user interface system are provided for a mobile barcode scanning device. A visual display is provided for the user interface system and is configured to allow a user to access features of the mobile barcode scanning device using touch gestures on the visual display. A barcode scanning application is further provided for the mobile barcode scanning device. The barcode scanning application can be initialized by a user of the mobile barcode scanning device. An operating system is further provided for the mobile barcode scanning device. The operating system is communicatively coupled to the embedded camera, the barcode scanning application, and the user interface system. The visual display provides a viewfinder for the embedded camera in the barcode scanning application.
[0010] Features of the mobile barcode scanning device include a user-defined graphics window overlaid on the viewfinder. The user-defined graphics window is adjustable in size, orientation, and position by a user of the mobile barcode scanning device through at least a two-point touch gesture on the visual display. The two-point touch gesture is capable of resizing, reorienting, and repositioning the graphics window to a two-point size, orientation, and position in real time, whereby a barcode to be scanned can be defined by the user in real time in the adjustable graphics window.
[0011] In one exemplary embodiment, the two-point touch gesture on the visual display is a pinch gesture with two fingers of the user.
[0012] In another exemplary embodiment, the two-point touch gesture is a touch gesture with a pair of styluses (ie, styluses).
[0013] In yet another exemplary embodiment, the two-point touch gesture is a multi-touch gesture.
[0014] In yet another exemplary embodiment, the mobile barcode scanning device further includes a front-facing camera (i.e., a camera facing the user) and image processing software. The operating system is communicatively coupled to the front-facing camera and the image processing software. [0019] In yet another exemplary embodiment, the barcode scanning application is configured such that a barcode may be successfully decoded if the barcode is partially encompassed by the graphics window.
[0020] In yet another exemplary embodiment, the barcode scanning application is configured such that a barcode can be successfully decoded if the barcode is completely enclosed by the graphics window.
[0021] In another aspect, the invention includes a process for scanning a bar code with a mobile device.
[0022] A mobile device has an embedded camera and a user interface system. A visual display is provided for the user interface system. The user interface system is configured to allow a user to access features of the mobile device using touch gestures on the visual display. A barcode scanning application and an operating system are also provided for a mobile barcode scanning device. The operating system is communicatively coupled to the embedded camera, the barcode scanning application, and the user interface system. The visual display provides a viewfinder for the embedded camera. The viewfinder has a user-defined graphical window in which, when the barcode scanning application begins scanning, a barcode to be scanned and successfully decoded must be at least partially included. The graphical window is adjustable in size, orientation, and position by a two-point touch gesture of a user moving the barcode scanning device.
[0023] The process includes the steps of: (i) initializing a barcode scanning application; (ii) displaying a camera viewfinder on a visual display; (iii) superimposing a user-defined graphics window in the viewfinder; (iv) defining the size, orientation and position of the graphics window in real time in the viewfinder through a user's two-point touch gesture to at least partially include a barcode to be scanned and decoded in the viewfinder; and (v) decoding any barcode within the graphics window.
[0024] In an exemplary embodiment, the limiting step is accomplished by resizing, reorienting, and relocating the graphics window to the size, orientation, and position of two points in real time by a two-point touch gesture. Thus, the barcode to be scanned can be limited in an adjustable graphics window by the user in real time.
[0025] In another exemplary embodiment, the two-point touch gesture is a pinch gesture of two fingers.
[0026] In another exemplary embodiment, at least a portion of the defining step is accomplished by an eye tracking capability of the mobile device. A front camera and image processing software are further provided for the mobile device. An operating system is communicatively coupled to the front camera and the image processing software. The eye tracking capability is implemented by collaboration between the front camera and the image processing software. However, the present invention may be implemented in many different forms and should not be construed as being limited to the embodiments set forth herein. In the drawings, similar numbers refer to similar elements throughout the text.
[0037] In one aspect, the present invention includes a feature on a mobile bar code scanning device for adjusting a user-defined bar code scanning window in real time.
[0038] Reference now Figure 1 , an exemplary mobile barcode scanning device 10 is provided with an embedded camera 11, a user interface system 12, which includes a visual display 18, a barcode scanning application 13, and an operating system 14. The user interface system 12 is configured to allow a user to access features of the mobile barcode scanning device 10 using touch gestures on the visual display 18. The operating system 14 communicatively links the embedded camera 11, the user interface system 12, and the barcode scanning application 13. The barcode scanning application 13 can be initialized by an action of a user of the mobile barcode scanning device 10. A system bus 15 can be provided for the mobile barcode scanning device 10, which helps the operating system 14 to communicatively link to other components. Other interface circuits and components may also be present, such as memory (not shown), etc.
[0039] As previously discussed, the barcode scanning application 13 may be initialized by an action of a user of the mobile barcode scanning device 10. The user's action may include a voice command, a swiping motion of a stylus on the visual display 18, a touch gesture on the visual display 18, a physical motion of the mobile barcode scanning device 10, or a combination of any of these. Alternatively, the barcode scanning application 13 may be provided with an application logic 25 that performs the required data processing of the barcode scanning application 13. Initialization of the barcode application 13 may be accomplished by the application logic 25.
[0040] The mobile barcode scanning device 10 may also include a front camera 16 and image processing software 17 to provide eye tracking capabilities to the mobile barcode scanning device 10. The operating system 14 is communicatively coupled to the front camera 16 and the image processing software 17.
[0041] The mobile barcode scanning 10 device can be a smart phone, a smart watch or a tablet.
[0042] Reference now Figure 2A and 2B In an exemplary embodiment of an inventive feature, Figure 2A FIG. 2 schematically shows the process of adjusting the graphics window 20 for size, position and orientation before Figure 1The mobile barcode scanning device 10 is shown in the block diagram of Figure 2B FIG. 2 schematically shows the graphics window 20 after adjusting the size, position and orientation. Figure 1 The mobile bar code scanning device 10 is shown in the block diagram. Figure 2A A mobile barcode scanning device 10 having a visual display 18 and a viewfinder 19 on the visual display 18 is shown after a barcode application (not shown) has been initialized. A graphics window 20 is in the center of the viewfinder 19. Two barcodes 22 and 23 are adjacent to each other in the viewfinder 19. The graphics window 20 includes the entire first barcode 22 and a portion of the adjacent second barcode 23. Figure 2A and 2B In the example, barcode 23 is the barcode to be scanned and decoded. User 43 is ready to adjust graphics window 20.
[0043] Reference now Figure 2B , the user 43 has moved the graphics window 20 to the right side of the viewfinder 19 and resized the graphics window 20 to include only the barcode 23 to be decoded. The user 43 uses a two-point touch gesture 21 (e.g., a pinch gesture 21) to move and resize the graphics window 20 in real time so that the graphics window 20 is sized, positioned, and oriented at the location of the two-point touch gesture 21.
[0044] The two-point touch gesture 21 can be as follows Figure 2B , but may alternatively be a two-point gesture 21 or a multi-point gesture (not shown) made with a stylus (not shown).
[0045] The barcode 23 to be decoded can be completely contained by the graphics window 20, such as Figure 2B , or may be partially included by the graphics window 20, depending on how the bar code scanning application (not shown) is configured.
[0046] Reference now Figure 3 In another exemplary embodiment of a feature of the present invention, the mobile barcode scanning device 10 includes a front camera 16 and image processing software (not shown). The front camera 16 and the image processing software cooperate to allow the mobile barcode scanning device 10 to have eye tracking capabilities, as is known in the art for smart mobile devices. A user (not shown) can reposition the graphics window 20 with eye movements. The user's eye 40A views the graphics window 20 at a first position 20A in a first orientation. Subsequently, the user focuses his eye 40B to a second position on the viewfinder 19, where the user wants to reposition the graphics window 20 from the initial position 20A to the second position 20B. Figure 3, the user moves the graphics window 20 from the center of the viewfinder 19 from a first position 20A (where the graphics window 20 includes the barcode 22 and a portion of the barcode 23) to a second position 20B to the right side of the viewfinder 19, effectively moving the graphics window 20 so that the barcode 22 is no longer in the graphics window 20 and the barcode 23 is completely included in the graphics window 20. In this way, the graphics window 20 can be repositioned on the viewfinder 19 in real time by moving the eye tracking capability of the barcode scanning device 10.
[0047] In another aspect, the present invention includes a process for scanning a bar code using a mobile bar code scanning device having a real-time, user-defined adjustable window.
[0048] exist Figure 4 In an exemplary embodiment depicted as a flow chart in FIG. 1 , a process 30 of scanning a barcode with a mobile device is provided. Figure 1 -3 describes and illustrates an exemplary mobile device used in the process, and in particular uses the feature of a user-defined graphical window, which must at least partially include the barcode to be scanned and decoded in the user-defined graphical window when the barcode scanning application begins scanning. The graphical window is adjustable in size, orientation and position through a two-point touch gesture of a user of the mobile device. Process 30 includes the following steps: initializing the barcode scanning application 31; displaying a camera viewfinder on a visual display 32; superimposing a user-defined graphical window in the viewfinder 33; defining the size, orientation and position of the graphical window in the viewfinder in real time through a two-point touch gesture of the user to at least partially include the barcode to be scanned and decoded in the viewfinder 34; and decoding any barcode within the graphical window 35.
[0049] The defining step 34 is accomplished by resizing, reorienting, and repositioning the graphics window 36 using a two-point touch gesture. The two-point touch gesture can resize, reorient, and reposition the graphics window to the size, orientation, and location of the two points in real time, thereby enabling the barcode to be scanned and decoded to be defined in the adjustable graphics window by the user in real time. The two-point touch gesture can be a pinch gesture with two fingers, a multi-touch gesture, or a two-point gesture with a stylus.
[0050] The defining step 34 may be accomplished at least in part by the eye tracking capability of the mobile device. The eye tracking capability is provided by the cooperation of the front camera and the image processing software. The repositioning of the graphics window may be accomplished by the eye tracking capability of the mobile device, as described above with respect to Figure 3 as described.
[0051] The initialization step 31 may be accomplished by a physical action of the user, such as a voice command, a swiping motion of a stylus on the visual display, a touch gesture on the visual display, a physical motion of a mobile barcode scanning device, or a combination thereof.
[0052] Alternatively, an application logic may be provided for the barcode scanning application. The application logic performs the required data processing of the barcode scanning application. For example, the initialization step 31 may be completed by the application logic.
