Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to the field of light-emitting modules, in particular light-guiding light-emitting modules. The present invention is particularly, but not exclusively, applicable to the display of light-emitting patterns.
[0002] For the purpose of displaying information, for aesthetic customization purposes, or to create an atmosphere, it is now necessary to display luminous patterns on many pieces of equipment.
[0003] To achieve this, it is known to use a screen, such as an LCD screen.
[0004] However, this technology is not only expensive but also sensitive to environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity or UV radiation.
[0005] Furthermore, it is preferred to have a lighting module that is flexible so that it can be more easily integrated into any type of equipment.
[0006] Therefore, there is a need to have a lighting module that is capable of creating animations and that is robust, cheap and easy to integrate into any type of equipment.
[0007] International patent application published with number WO 2011130715 A2 proposes a flexible guide plate capable of returning light injected by an injection strip from a light source according to a given pattern.
[0008] However, the size of such flexible guide plates is limited by the constraints associated with their manufacture. Therefore, obtaining a lighting module of larger size based on this technology imposes the need to use at least two flexible guide plates placed side by side with each other.
[0009] However, a disadvantage of this technique is that the edge of the flexible guide plate into which the light is injected appears luminous. Therefore, if two flexible guide plates are placed side by side with each other in order to produce a light module of larger size, their junction appears luminous and this introduces undesirable defects into the projected pattern. In particular, if a shape or symbol consisting of two complementary patterns of two guide plates is projected, the luminous strip will impair the visual appearance of this shape or symbol.
[0010] The present invention improves this situation.
[0011] To this end, a first aspect relates to a lighting module, the lighting module comprising:
[0012] an assembly of at least two flexible guide plates, the assembly comprising a first flexible guide plate and a second flexible guide plate, each flexible guide plate in the assembly being capable of receiving light via at least a first edge of the flexible guide plate and reflecting the light in a direction substantially perpendicular to a surface of the flexible guide plate according to at least one pattern etched in the flexible guide plate;
[0013] at least a first light injection element capable of receiving light and capable of distributing light in the first flexible guiding plate and a second light injection element capable of receiving light and distributing light in the second flexible guiding plate;
[0014] At least one light source capable of injecting light into the first light injection element and into the second light injection element.
[0015] The first flexible guide plate and the second flexible guide plate are arranged side by side with each other in such a way that the second edge of the first flexible guide plate faces the second edge of the second flexible guide plate. The first flexible guide plate and the second flexible guide plate define an outer half-space of the light emitting module and an inner half-space complementary to the outer half-space, and light is emitted toward the outer half-space in a direction substantially perpendicular to the surface of the flexible guide plate. The portion of the first flexible guide plate extending along the second edge and the portion of the second flexible guide plate extending along the second edge are bent toward the inner half-space or at least partially covered with a reflective material.
[0016] Thus, a light module with a large light emitting surface can be created, making it possible to create complex and large-sized patterns. Due to the bending of the second edge of the flexible guide plate towards the inside of the module according to the first embodiment or due to the reflective material arranged at the joint according to the second embodiment, the joint between the two flexible guide plates does not experience unwanted illumination.
[0017] According to a first embodiment, the lighting module further comprises a support arranged in the inner half space and capable of holding an assembly of at least two flexible guide plates, the support comprising a cavity capable of accommodating a bent portion of a first flexible guide plate and a bent portion of a second flexible guide plate.
[0018] The module can thus be more easily integrated into equipment, such as motor vehicle equipment.
[0019] According to a first embodiment, portions of the first and second flexible guide sheets extending along the second edge are bent toward the inner half-space, and the reflective material at least partially covers surfaces of the bent portions facing the inner half-space.
[0020] Therefore, the light output of the light emitting module according to the first embodiment can be improved because the light reaching the surface facing the inner half-space is reflected into the flexible guide plate so that the light can be emitted toward the outer half-space according to the pattern. In addition, because the reflective material faces the inner half-space, it does not deteriorate the light emitting pattern projected by the flexible guide plate.
[0021] As an alternative, according to a second embodiment, the reflective material at least partially covers surfaces of the portion of the first flexible guiding sheet extending along the second edge and of the portion of the second flexible guiding sheet extending along the second edge facing the outer half-space.
[0022] Therefore, there is no need to bend the portion of the flexible guide plate extending along the second edge, thereby making the light emitting module easier to manufacture while still preventing light from being emitted along the second edge.
[0023] Depending on the embodiment, the reflective material may be a reflective paint.
[0024] Thus, the visual appearance of the projected pattern is improved without adding additional components and while creating minimal additional bulk.
[0025] According to the first or second embodiment, the reflective material may be a strip extending along the second edge of the first and second flexible guide sheets.
[0026] Thus, the joints between the flexible guide plates are completely covered by the reflective material, thereby improving the visual appearance of the pattern projected by the light emitting module in the second embodiment and improving the light output in the first embodiment.
[0027] Depending on the embodiment, the first flexible guide plate can be etched in such a way that a first pattern is projected when the at least one light source injects light into the first injection element, and the second flexible guide plate can be etched in such a way that a second pattern is projected when the at least one light source injects light into the second injection element, and the first pattern and the second pattern arranged side by side can together form at least one luminous symbol.
[0028] The invention is particularly advantageous in the case where such a luminous signal is produced by several patterns or several flexible guide plates.Without the invention, such a symbol would have a luminous bar extending through it at the joint between the flexible guide plates.
[0029] Additionally, the strip of reflective material may be interrupted above the illuminated symbol.
[0030] Thus, the projection of the pattern forming the light-emitting symbol is optimized without being degraded by the joints between several flexible guide plates. The light output associated with the light-emitting module is also improved.
[0031] According to the first or second embodiment, at least one of the flexible guide plates may further include a third edge different from the first edge and the second edge, wherein at least a portion of the flexible guide plate extending along the third edge is covered with a reflective material on a surface facing the outer half space.
[0032] Thus, edge effects on one or more edges of a flexible lead sheet that do not form a joint with another flexible lead sheet are avoided.
[0033] Depending on the embodiment, the light source may be capable of selectively injecting light into a first optical fiber connected to a first injection element and into a second optical fiber connected to a second injection element.
[0034] Thus, a single light source can be remotely positioned relative to the flexible guide plate and the injection element, thereby making the light emitting module easier to integrate, in particular into installations where there are considerable space constraints.
[0035] Depending on the embodiment, the assembly may comprise more than two flexible guide plates placed alongside each other in such a way that an array of flexible guide plates is formed.
[0036] Thus, larger sized light emitting modules with complex patterns can be created.
[0037] Depending on the embodiment, one dimension of the flexible guide plate may be between 3 cm and 25 cm.
[0038] Thus, light modules of larger sizes can be created.
[0039] Depending on the embodiment, each flexible guide plate in the assembly may have a thickness between 0.2 mm and 1 mm.
[0040] Therefore, guide plates offer considerable flexibility, making them easier to integrate.
[0041] Depending on the embodiment, each flexible guide plate may include a film including a microstructure, and each of the first pattern and the second pattern can be etched by ultraviolet printing the microstructure of the film.
[0042] Such a microstructure makes it possible to maintain a high level of transparency of the flexible guide plate while projecting light in the light emitting area when the light source is activated.
[0043] In addition to this, for each flexible guiding plate, the surface density of the microstructures may decrease with distance from the edge of the guiding plate where light is injected.
[0044] The uniformity of the pattern projected by the flexible guide plate is thus improved.
[0045] Further features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent upon reading the following detailed description and examining the accompanying drawings, in which:
[0046] [ Figure 1 ] shows part of a light emitting module according to the present invention;
[0047] [ Figure 2] shows an injection element of a light emitting module according to an embodiment of the present invention;

[0049] [ Figure 4 ] shows a light emitting module according to a first embodiment of the present invention;
[0050] [ Figure 5 ] shows a light emitting module according to a second embodiment of the present invention.
[0051] The present description focuses on features that distinguish the lighting module from lighting modules known in the prior art.
[0052] Figure 1 A portion of a light emitting module 100 according to the invention is shown.
[0053] The lighting module 100 comprises a flexible guide plate 110 capable of receiving light at least via a first edge 114 and reflecting the light in a direction Z substantially perpendicular to the surface of the flexible guide plate, the flexible guide plate thus being Figure 1 The XY plane in FIG.
[0054] A guide plate refers to an optical guiding element, one of the dimensions of which is much smaller in space than the other two dimensions, for example, one or more orders of magnitude smaller. Figure 1 As shown, the flexible guide plate considered here has a thickness along the axis Z that is at least two orders of magnitude smaller than its dimension in the plane XY in which the flexible guide plate 110 extends.
[0055] The flexible guide plate 110 may include a flexible film 111 at its core, the flexible film including at least a first edge 114 capable of guiding light in a general direction X, and including a set of microstructures 113 capable of reflecting the light guided in the flexible film 111 out of the flexible guide plate 110, in particular in one or more directions substantially along the axis Z.
[0056] The flexible film 111 may be a substrate film made of polycarbonate PC, polymethyl methacrylate PMMA, thermoplastic polyurethane TPU or polyethylene terephthalate PET. The flexible film 111 may have a thickness, i.e. a dimension along the axis Z, between 12 and 1000 microns. More specifically, the thickness of the flexible film 111 may be between 50 and 1000 microns, for example between 200 and 500 microns. Alternatively, the flexible guide plate 110 has a thickness between 200 and 1000 microns.
[0057] The above materials, combined with the small thickness as described above, make it possible to obtain a flexible membrane 111. Other materials can be envisaged for the composition of the flexible membrane 111. However, it is preferred according to the invention to envisage a deformable and transparent material.
[0058] The fine coating of microstructures 113 may be applied to one of the faces of the flexible film 111 or integrated into the flexible film 111. The coating of microstructures 113 may in particular have a thickness along the axis Z of less than 20 micrometers.
[0059] Such a microstructure 113 may have the general shape of a bump from which light is reflected in a direction substantially along the axis Z. Such a microstructure 113 may be able to ensure that the light leaving the flexible film 111 forms a pattern. In particular, the microstructure 113 may be etched according to a desired pattern using ultraviolet printing.
[0060] Microstructures 113 refer to structures or irregularities of the flexible film whose size is less than a few micrometers. Therefore, microstructures also cover nanoscale structures. Microstructures 113 of this size make it possible to ensure that the flexible film 111 has a high degree of transparency. In particular, a transparency of about 97% can be obtained in practice by using microstructures 113. As an alternative, the flexible guide plate can be translucent or opaque.
[0061] Advantageously, the microstructures 113 may be distributed along the axis X in such a way that the linear density of the microstructures 113 is proportional to the distance from the first edge 114 via which the light injected via the injection element 120 is received. In other words, the farther the microstructures 113 are from the first edge 114, the denser they are grouped. Such a distribution advantageously makes it possible to ensure a uniform distribution of the luminous intensity of the pattern emitted by the flexible guide plate 110 along the axis X.
[0062] The flexible guide plate 110 may further comprise one or two optional protective layers 112.1 and 112.2 capable of providing mechanical protection for the flexible film 111. Furthermore, at least one of the protective layers 112.1 and 112.2 may comprise an anti-UV treatment capable of protecting the flexible film from UV rays once the microstructures 113 have been etched. Without such UV protection, the pattern projected by the flexible guide plate 110 tends to deteriorate over time, especially when exposed to sunlight.
[0063] exist Figure 1 In FIG. 1 , the flexible film 111 and the protective layers 112.1 and 112.2 are depicted as being spaced apart, which is purely illustrative. However, it will be understood that the protective layers 112.1 and 112.2 may be closely associated with the flexible film, in particular by being laminated to the flexible film.
[0064] Since the guide plate 110 is flexible, it is not necessarily included in a plane but may be bent according to where it is placed and mechanical stress applied thereto.
[0065] Already in Figure 1 The portion of the light module 100 shown in FIG. 1 further includes a light injection element 120 (also referred to as a lighting strip), because the light injection element extends longitudinally in a direction Y, and the light injection element can be extended in a direction perpendicular to its longitudinal direction (e.g., in a direction perpendicular to its longitudinal direction). Figure 1 When arranged in the manner depicted, light is injected along axis X).
[0066] exist Figure 1 In the embodiment, the light injection element 120 has a rectangular or square cross-section. However, the light injection element 120 may have a circular, oval or polygonal cross-section.
[0067] Therefore, the light injection element 120 includes an exit surface 122 extending in a longitudinal direction and capable of injecting light in a direction substantially perpendicular to the exit surface 122. The light injection element 120 further includes an incident surface 121 capable of receiving light from the light source 130 at one end of the light injection element 120, and the light injection element 120 is capable of guiding the light longitudinally along the axis Y, thereby distributing the light on the exit surface 122. Figure 2 The description above will make it easier to understand the distribution of light by the exit surface 122.
[0068] There are no restrictions associated with the light source 130. The light source may be, for example, an electroluminescent source of the LED type which provides the advantages of small size, low energy consumption and only a small degree of heating. The light source 130 may be capable of producing light within a range of wavelengths. This range may be centered around visible colors so as to produce colored light, such as blue, red or green. Alternatively, the light source 130 may emit light over the entire wavelength range visible to the human eye so as to produce white light. A laser type light source 130 may produce a very narrow wavelength range.
[0069] As an alternative, the light source 130 is not positioned to directly face the incident surface 121 of the injection element 120, but the light emitting module 100 further includes an optical fiber placed between the light source 130 and the injection element 120, so that the light source 130 can be remotely positioned relative to the assembly formed by the injection element 120 and the flexible guide plate 110.
[0070] Figure 2 An injection element 120 of a light emitting module 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention is shown.
[0071] The injection element 120 may include a plurality of injection guides 123 capable of receiving light from the source 130 via the incident surface 121 and guiding the light far to a longitudinal position on the exit surface 122, wherein the longitudinal positions of the light guides are different from each other so that the light is distributed to at least several longitudinal positions on the exit surface 122.
[0072] Thus, light may be injected at different longitudinal positions of the first edge 114 along the axis Y. Each longitudinal position on the first edge 114 may correspond to a guide line of the flexible film 111 capable of guiding light along the axis X along such guide line.
[0073] This combination of flexible guide plate 110 , injection element 120 and light source 130 thus makes it possible to project light in direction Z through a flexible, transparent, translucent or opaque surface with good surface homogeneity and according to a given pattern.
[0074] In practice, such a lighting module may make it possible to emit a pattern having a brightness between 100 and 1000 candela per square meter, with a light extraction efficiency included that can vary between 25% and 80%.
[0075] Further details regarding the structure and arrangement of elements 110 , 120 , and 130 are described in International Patent Application Published No. WO 2011130715 A2.
[0076] Figure 3 A front view of a lighting module 300 according to the present invention is shown.
[0077] The light emitting module 300 according to the present invention comprises:
[0078] - an assembly of at least two flexible guide plates, the assembly comprising a Figure 1 The first flexible guide plate 310.1 and the second flexible guide plate 310.2 of the flexible guide plate 110 shown in FIG.
[0079] at least a first light injection element 320.1 and a second light injection element 320.2, which are associated with the first flexible guiding plate 310.1 and the second flexible guiding plate 310.2, respectively, each light injection element being able to be a reference Figure 1 and Figure 2 The described injection element 120; and
[0080] - at least one light source (such as previously referenced Figure 1 The at least one light source 130 described above is capable of selectively injecting light into the first injection element and the second injection element. Figure 3By way of illustration an embodiment is depicted in which the first light source 330.1 is placed facing the incident surface of the first injection element 320.1 and the second light source 330.2 is placed facing the incident surface of the second injection element 320.2.
[0081] The first injection element 320.1 is capable of injecting light originating from the first light source 330.1 into a first edge of the first flexible guiding plate 320.1 (such as the edge 114 described previously).
[0082] The second injection element 320.2 is capable of injecting light originating from the second light source 330.2 into a first edge of the second flexible guiding plate 320.2, such as the edge 114 described previously.
[0083] In the lighting module 300 according to the present invention, the first flexible guide plate 310.1 and the second flexible guide plate 310.2 are arranged side by side with each other in such a way that the second edge 350.1 of the first flexible guide plate 310.1 faces the second edge 350.2 of the second flexible guide plate 320.2.
[0084] The first flexible guide plate 310.1 is etched according to the first pattern 340.1 and the second flexible guide plate 340.2 is etched according to the second pattern. Figure 1 As depicted, the first pattern 340.1 and the second pattern 340.2 may together form at least one symbol 341. Alternatively, each pattern of the flexible guide sheet may form a symbol independently of the other flexible guide sheets, or may not form a symbol, which is the case when the pattern is a spatial modulation of the emitted light without an apparent shape or symbol.
[0085] In the following, the example of two patterns together forming a symbol 341 is considered only by way of illustration. Thus, the symbol 341 corresponds to a light emitting area in the first flexible guiding sheet and to a complementary light emitting area in the second flexible guiding sheet.
[0086] There is no limit to the number of flexible guide plates included in the lighting module according to the present invention. The lighting module may in particular include more than three flexible guide plates arranged in a line or in an array consisting of at least two rows and at least two columns. In this case, at least one of the flexible guide plates has two second edges facing the second edges of the two other flexible guide plates.
[0087] Therefore, the term "second edge" of a flexible guide plate is used to describe any edge of a flexible guide plate that faces or adjoins another second edge of another flexible guide plate. Figure 3 An example in which each flexible guide plate comprises only one second edge is shown by way of illustration only.
[0088] The portion 360.1 of the first flexible guide plate 310.1 extends along the second edge 350.1 of the first flexible guide plate 310.1.
[0089] The portion 360.2 of the second flexible guide plate 310.2 extends along the second edge 350.2 of the second flexible guide plate 310.2.
[0090] There is no limitation on the width of the portion 360.1, which may be a fraction of the size of the first flexible guide plate 310.1, just as the portion 360.2 may be a fraction of the size of the second flexible guide plate 310.2. The portion 360.1 may, for example, represent less than one tenth of the width or dimension along the axis Y of the first flexible guide plate 310.1. The portion 360.2 may likewise represent less than one tenth of the width or dimension along the axis Y of the second flexible guide plate 310.2.
[0091] The first flexible guide plate 310.1 and the second flexible guide plate 310.2 may have the same shape and the same size.
[0092] For example, the shape of the first flexible guide plate 310.1 and the second flexible guide plate 310.2 may be rectangular or square. The first flexible guide plate 310.1 and the second flexible guide plate 310.2 may have dimensions along the axis X and the axis Y along which they extend of between 3 cm and 25 cm.
[0093] "Pattern" refers to any predefined spatial distribution of the luminous intensity emitted by the light-emitting module. In particular, reference is made here to a two-dimensional pattern or a one-dimensional pattern. Thus, the pattern may be a two-dimensional shape or symbol obtained due to the contrast between the luminous intensity at different positions in the plane XY of the flexible guide plate 110. The pattern may also include several shapes or symbols. Alternatively, the pattern encompasses a predefined or intentional spatial distribution of the luminous intensity that does not reveal an overall shape, such as a distribution that produces a cloud of luminous points. In the context of the present invention, the pattern is formed by injecting light into an injection element that is positioned relative to the flexible guide plate in such a way that the pattern is formed on the flexible guide plate.
[0094] Each flexible guide plate may optionally include at least a third edge, which is an edge different from the first edge receiving light and different from the second edge adjacent to the other flexible guide plate. The first flexible guide plate 310.1 may include such a third edge 370.1 and the second flexible guide plate 310.2 may include such a third edge 370.2.
[0095] The light emitting module 300 has been referred to Figure 3 The features presented apply to both embodiments described below.
[0096] Figure 4 A cross-sectional view of a light emitting module 400 according to a first embodiment of the present invention is shown.
[0097] The depicted section is in plane YZ. The lighting module 400 delimits an outer half-space above the lighting module 400 and an inner half-space below the lighting module 400. There are no limitations associated with the adjectives "outer" and "inner", which are relative and enable the naming of the half-space.
[0098] In the first embodiment, the portions 360 . 1 and 360 . 2 extending along the second edges 350 . 1 and 350 . 2 are bent toward the inner half space defined by the light emitting module 400 .
[0099] This then avoids projecting light in the junction zone between the portion 360.1 and the portion 360.2.Therefore, a lighting module with a large emission surface can be created, since the lighting module comprises several flexible guide plates, without reducing the quality of the projected pattern.
[0100] When the patterns created by the flexible guide plates together form a pattern or symbol, such as Figure 3 Thus, the first embodiment makes it possible to create such a pattern without unwanted light or light strips that deteriorate the visual appearance of the pattern or symbol 341.
[0101] Optionally, the light module 400 may include a support 410 arranged in the inner half space and capable of holding the first and second flexible guide plates. The support 410 includes a cavity 411 shaped to accommodate the curved portion 360.1 of the first and second flexible guide plates, 360.2. It will be understood that the cavity 411 extends along the axis X along the second edges 350.1 and 350.2.
[0102] When the light emitting module 400 includes an array of flexible guide plates, the cavities 411 may form a grid in the support 410. There is no limitation on the attachment means between the support 410 and the flexible guide plates, which may include mechanical means involving clamping or clip fastening, or alternatively, attachment means involving adhesive bonding.
[0103] The support 410 is capable of supporting and giving shape to the flexible guide plates 310.1 and 310.2. The support 410 may have a planar surface for contacting the flexible guide plates, or on the other hand may have a surface that is non-planar, has bumps or angles.
[0104] In addition, and optionally, the portions 360.1 and 360.2 may be partially or partially covered with a reflective material 420, which covers a surface of the portions 360.1 and 360.2 which faces the inner half-space, i.e. Figure 4 4. The reflective material 420 may be, for example, a reflective paint. Such an embodiment is advantageous for reflecting light into the flexible guide plates so as to illuminate each flexible guide plate according to a pattern. The light output of the light emitting module 400 is thus improved. Thus, a strip of material 420 extends on the surface facing the inner half-space (i.e. on the side opposite to the surface on which the pattern is projected), on the junction area connecting the two parts 360.1 and 360.2, thereby making it possible not to deteriorate the projected pattern.
[0105] Additionally, and optionally, a reflective material 421 identical to the reflective material 420 may at least partially cover the portion of each flexible guide plate extending along the third edges 370.1 and 370.2. Edge effects at the third edges, which are the ends of the light emitting modules, are thus avoided.
[0106] Figure 5 A cross-sectional view of a light emitting module 500 according to a second embodiment of the present invention is shown.
[0107] In the second embodiment, the portions 360.1 and 360.2 of the flexible guide plates 310.1 and 310.2 are not bent.
[0108] In order to prevent the light guided in the flexible guide plate from forming a light strip along the second edges 350.1 and 350.2, the reflective material 520 is disposed in the outer half space facing the light emitting module (ie, in the Figure 5 The surface of the device (facing upward) at least partially covers the aforementioned parts 360.1 and 360.2.
[0109] There is no limitation on the reflective material 520, which may be, for example, a reflective paint.
[0110] The light emitting module 500 may further include a support member 510 , which, unlike the aforementioned support member 410 , does not need to include a cavity 411 , thereby making the support member 510 easier to manufacture.
[0111] There is no limitation on the attachment means between the support 410 and the flexible guide plate, which may include mechanical means involving clamping or clip fastening, or alternatively attachment means involving adhesive bonding.
[0112] The support 510 is capable of supporting and giving shape to the flexible guide plates 310.1 and 310.2. The support 510 may have a planar surface for contacting the flexible guide plates, or on the other hand may have a surface that is non-planar, has bumps or angles.
[0113] The strip of material 520 may be interrupted in the luminous areas of the patterns 340 . 1 and 340 . 2 , in particular when a symbol, such as the symbol 341 , falls partially into the junction area joining the two flexible guide plates.
[0114] Additionally, and optionally, a reflective material 521 identical to the reflective material 520 may at least partially cover the portion of each flexible guide plate extending along the third edges 370.1 and 370.2. Edge effects at the third edges, which are the ends of the light emitting modules, are thus avoided.
[0115] The invention is not limited to the embodiments described above by way of example; it extends to other alternatives.
