Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a jaw assembly of a jaw crusher. The present invention also relates to a jaw crusher comprising the jaw assembly. Background Art

[0002] A jaw crusher unit typically comprises a fixed jaw and a movable jaw that together define a crushing zone. A drive mechanism operates to rock the movable jaw back and forth so as to crush material within the zone. The crushing zone typically converges toward its lower discharge end so that crushable material fed to the upper, wider end of the zone can fall downwardly under the action of gravity while being subjected to repeated cycles of crushing movement in response to the cyclic movement of the movable jaw. The crushed material is then discharged by gravity through the lower discharge end onto a conveyor belt for subsequent processing or into a suitable stockpile.

[0003] Due to the forces exerted on the jaws, the jaw liners wear over time and need to be replaced. Current jaw liners have holes on the working surface for receiving hooks when the jaw liners are to be replaced. These holes add cost and complexity to the process of casting the jaw liners and also reduce the efficiency of the crushing operation.

[0004] Current jaw liners also incorporate retention assemblies that are designed to limit lateral movement of the jaw liner relative to the jaw frame (frame). The retention assembly consists of an internally cast plug that interfaces with the posterior face of the jaw liner. If subjected to significant crushing forces, the lateral retention plug can and does shear off, making repair of the casting expensive and time consuming.

[0005] It is an object of the present invention to overcome at least one of the above problems. Summary of the invention

[0006] This object is met by providing a jaw assembly for a jaw crusher, the jaw assembly including a lateral retainer insert that couples the top of the jaw liner with the underside of a retainer plate (such as a retainer wedge plate). The insert has a head portion received in a recess in the base of the retaining plate and an anchor portion received in a recess in the rear of the jaw liner. The recess is not exposed to the front of the jaw liner, thereby providing protection for the insert. The retainer insert is also frangible so that when the jaw assembly encounters heavy loads, the retainer insert breaks, thereby allowing the jaw liner to move and avoiding structural damage to the fixed jaw. In addition, because the head portion of the retainer insert is exposed outside the top of the jaw liner (see Figure 5 and Figure 6 ), so it can be used as a lifting attachment when the jaw liner needs to be replaced or rotated.

[0007] In a first aspect, the present invention provides a jaw assembly of a jaw crusher, comprising: a jaw liner having a front working surface, a rear surface, a top portion, and a bottom portion; a frame forming part of the jaw, the frame having a support surface which, in use, abuts a rear face of the jaw liner; a first retention plate for clamping the top of the jaw liner to the support surface, the first retention plate having a base which, in use, abuts the top of the jaw liner; and A retainer assembly is provided for limiting lateral movement of the jaw pad relative to the frame.

[0045] The present invention will now be described with reference to specific embodiments. These are exemplary only and are for illustration purposes only: they are not intended to limit the scope of the claimed patent or the invention described in any way. These examples constitute the best mode currently thought of for practicing the present invention.

[0046] With particular reference to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 and Figure 2 , a jaw crusher, generally indicated at 1, is shown. The jaw crusher 1 is of a general type commonly used in material handling operations to crush rock or other crushable materials. Typically, the crusher 1 is mounted on a material handling device (not shown) that includes other components that cooperate directly or indirectly with the crusher 1, such as a conveyor, feeder, hopper and / or screen, all of which may be mounted on a chassis (with wheels and / or tracks) or other substrate.

[0047] The jaw crusher 1 comprises opposing first and second crushing jaws 2, 3, wherein at least one of the jaws is movable relative to the other jaw so that the jaws 2, 3 can crush material between the jaws 2, 3. In a typical embodiment, the first jaw 2 is fixed and the second jaw 3 is movable towards and away from the first jaw 2 in an oscillating manner.

[0048] A drive system for moving the or each movable jaw is provided. Typically, the drive system comprises a rotatable wheel 5 (typically a flywheel) coupled to an eccentric shaft 6, which is coupled to one end of the movable jaw 3. The movable jaw 3 is also coupled to a toggle mechanism 8, which typically comprises a toggle plate 10 and a tensioning rod and spring or plunger assembly 12. A motor (not shown) is coupled to the wheel 5, for example by a drive belt (not shown), for rotating it. In use, the motor rotates the wheel 5, thereby causing the upper end of the jaw 3 to oscillate, while the toggle mechanism 8 causes or facilitates oscillatory movement of the lower end of the jaw 3.

[0049] Typically, a side wall 14 is provided beside the jaws 2, 3 to form a crushing chamber together with the jaws 2, 3. All crusher components may be provided on any suitable base (not shown).

[0050] Each jaw 2, 3 comprises a frame 16 (which may be referred to as a jaw frame) and a jaw liner 18. Each jaw liner 18 has a working (crushing) surface 20, a rear face 21, a top 22 and a bottom 23. The respective crushing surfaces are opposite to each other so that material can be crushed therebetween. The crushing surface 20 may be grooved, comprising a plurality of parallel ridges 24. Each ridge 24 generally extends in a direction from the upper portion to the lower portion of the jaw liner 18. The jaw liner 18 is generally in the form of a plate (and may be referred to as a jaw plate). The crushing surface 20 is generally rectangular. Each jaw liner 18 can be removed from the respective jaw frame 16 to allow replacement of the jaw liner, for example, if the jaw liner becomes excessively worn through use.

[0051] In the embodiment shown, each jaw liner 18 is removable. In an alternative embodiment, only one of the jaw liner may be removable. Still alternatively, one of the crushing surfaces may be integrally formed with the respective jaw frame, rather than being formed on the jaw liner.

[0052] The jaw pad 18 is fixed in position on the corresponding jaw frame 16 by a first (upper) retaining wedge plate 25 and a second (lower) retaining wedge plate 26. The shape and size of the retainer wedge plates 25, 26 are designed to wedge between the jaw pad 18 and the frame 16 to hold the pad in place. To this end, the frame 16 can be shaped to define a recess 30 adjacent the jaw pad 18 (when assembled) into which the locking wedge plates 25, 26 can wedge. The wedge plates are fixed to the frame by bolts 35 extending through holes 36 in the plates and holes 37 in the frame, and locked with locking nuts 38. In the embodiment shown, the first retaining wedge plate 25 is provided by two retainer wedge plates 25a, 25b that are vertically symmetrical about a center.

[0053] The rear face 21 of the jaw pad 18 includes a first recess 40 extending across the top of the jaw pad and defining an inwardly extending flange 41 which forms part of the top 22 of the jaw pad. The flange 41 includes four through holes 42, two lateral through holes 42a and two central through holes 42b. Each through hole 42 extends from the first recess 40 through to the top of the jaw pad.

[0054] See attached Fig. 9 and Fig.10 , shows one of the retainer wedge plates 25a, 25b. The plate has a wedge-shaped base 50 including two second recesses 51a and 51b formed in the rear portion 52 of the plate and the base 50. Fig.10 As shown in FIG. 1 , the recess 51a which is located over the center of the jaw pad 18 in use is larger than the recess 51b which is located over the side of the jaw pad in use.

[0055] The jaw assembly of the present invention includes a retainer assembly to fix the jaw liner 18 relative to the frame 16 and limit lateral movement therebetween. This is accomplished by providing a retainer insert 60 that couples the jaw liner to the retainer wedge plate. The insert is Figure 8 , and comprises a bolt 61 having a head portion 62 at one end and a threaded second end 63, and a corresponding threaded nut 64, which forms the anchoring portion of the insert. The head portion 62 comprises a lifting eyelet 65. The bolt has a length that enables it to protrude through the flange 41, which forms part of the top of the jaw liner 18. The head portion 62 is sized to be accommodated in the recesses 51a and 51b, wherein the tolerance between the head portion 62 and the recess 51a is greater than the tolerance between the head portion 62 and the recess 51b.

[0056] Figure 5 and Figure 6 The jaw liner is shown with the retainer insert 60 in place. Figure 7 The retainer insert 60 is shown protruding through the hole 42 in the flange 41 with the head portion 62 located within the second recess 51 and the anchor portion located within the first recess 40 .

[0057] Fig.13 is a front perspective view of the jaw assembly of the present invention with the front portion of the retainer wedge plates 25a, 25b removed to show the second recess 51 with the head portion 62 located therein.

[0058] Reference Fig.14 and Fig.15, showing in more detail a portion of the base of the jaw liner 18. The jaw liner is held in place by a second (lower) retaining wedge plate 26 abutting the base of the jaw liner. The rear base of the jaw liner includes a first recess 70 and a retaining insert 60, similar to that previously described, that couples the base of the jaw liner to the wedge plate 26, with an anchor portion of the insert 60 received in the recess 70 and a head portion 62 engaging a side 71 of the wedge plate 26.

[0059] Fig.16 and Fig.17 The use of the jaw assembly during the removal of the jaw liner is shown. Fig.16 In the embodiment of the present invention, the two retainer wedge plates 25a, 25b are removed by unscrewing the bolts 35 and removing the plates 25a, 25b to expose the top of the jaw liner 18 and the head portion 62 of the retainer insert 60 extending protruding above the top of the plate. Then, a lifting eyelet 70 is attached to each head portion 62, and then a lifting chain 72 is attached to the lifting eyelet, as shown in FIG. Fig.17 As shown, this allows the jaw liner to be lifted by a crane.

[0060] A benefit of the present invention is replaceability in the event of a large failure load, i.e. the retainer insert will break, thereby saving an expensive cast item. The recess in the wedge plate provides protection for the retainer insert during normal operation, which might otherwise be subject to material flow and attendant wear during normal operation. In addition to this, the removable insert can interface with conventional lifting equipment, which allows the jaw liner to be safely lifted and rotated or replaced. Equivalence Example

[0061] The foregoing description explains the currently preferred embodiments of the present invention in detail. After considering these descriptions, those skilled in the art will expect that many modifications and changes will occur in the practice of the present invention. These modifications and changes are intended to be covered in the appended claims.
