Background Art

[0003] In the agrochemical industry, farmers use different fertilizers to supply macronutrients to plants by applying to the soil or to the leaves of plants. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulfur are macronutrients that farmers must manually provide to plants and soil. In many crops, the amount of nitrogen provided is crucial to the overall quality and growth of the crops. Nitrogen is typically provided in a nitrogenous form, i.e., a nitrogenous precursor, a fertilizer compound, such as urea, ammonium nitrate or ammonium phosphate fertilizer compounds. However, due to the high water solubility of these salts, the nitrogen value provided may be lost due to runoff and leaching of the nitrogen fertilizer compound. Once applied, the nitrogen fertilizer compound is typically degraded into nitrogen species, such as NH4, for example by microorganisms present in the soil. + 、NO2 - 、NO3 - and ammonia, which may be even more susceptible to loss through evaporation, runoff, and leaching than the fertilizer compounds themselves. If the degradation of fertilizer compounds occurs at a faster rate than the plants can utilize the nitrogen-containing degradation products, the nitrogen value in the degradation products is at increased risk of loss.

[0004] Nitrification inhibitors and / or urease inhibitors have potential use in delaying the degradation of fertilizer compounds and thereby reducing the loss of nitrogen-containing degradation products that would otherwise occur in the absence of the inhibitors. The use of nitrification inhibitors and / or urease inhibitors in conjunction with nitrogen fertilizer compounds tends to increase the amount of time the nitrogen source remains in the soil and is available for uptake by plants, which tends to increase the effectiveness of the fertilizer and have a positive impact on crop yield and quality.

[0005] End-use aqueous fertilizer solutions are typically prepared by diluting a commercially available concentrated fertilizer composition with water on site. Commonly used concentrated fertilizer compositions include concentrated ammonium nitrate compositions, such as, for example, UAN 18, UAN 28, UAN 30 and UAN 32.

[0006] Dicyandiamide is potentially useful as a nitrification inhibitor in such end-use aqueous fertilizer compositions, but dicyandiamide has a very low solubility in water (about 41 grams per liter ("g / l")) and is therefore difficult to incorporate into the end-use aqueous fertilizer compositions, particularly under field conditions. Summary of the invention

[0007] Urease inhibitors can be used with fertilizers (i.e., combined with fertilizers containing urea, such as urea and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN)) to slow down the conversion of ammonium to ammonia and thus slow down the loss of ammonia to evaporation, thus making ammonium available to plants in the soil for a longer period of time. In many crops, the amount of nitrogen provided is crucial for the overall quality and growth of the crops. Nitrogen is supplied in the form of either urea or ammonium phosphate. However, due to the high water solubility of these salts, a large amount of nitrogen applied is lost due to runoff and leaching. In ammonium-based products, if nitrogen is not lost due to leaching or runoff, it is converted into ammonia by an enzyme called urease. Although ammonia can bind to soil particles, the conversion that occurs near the soil surface does not allow binding, and therefore, ammonia is lost to the atmosphere. Urease inhibitors are used to protect farmers' investment in fertilizers by preventing urease from decomposing urea, and soil microorganisms are responsible for converting urea into ammonia available in the soil. This increases the amount of time that the nitrogen is retained in the soil and is available for plant absorption.

[0008] Similarly, nitrification inhibitors can be used with fertilizers (i.e., in combination with urea-containing fertilizers, such as urea and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN)) to slow the conversion of ammonium to nitrate and the subsequent loss of nitrate to leaching, thus making ammonium available to plants for a longer period of time in the soil. Ammonium is one of the main forms of nitrogen that can be used by plants. Increasing the amount of time that nitrogen is available to plants increases the effectiveness of the fertilizer, which has a positive impact on crop yield and quality.

[0009] In one embodiment, the fertilizer is a conventional water-soluble inorganic fertilizer providing nutrients, such as a phosphorus-based, nitrogen-based, potassium-based or sulfur-based fertilizer. Examples of such fertilizers include: for nitrogen as a nutrient: nitrates and or ammonium salts, such as ammonium nitrate, including in combination with urea, for example as an Uram-type material, calcium ammonium nitrate, ammonium nitrate sulfate, ammonium phosphates, particularly monoammonium phosphate, diammonium hydrogen phosphate and ammonium polyphosphate, ammonium sulfate and the less commonly used calcium nitrate, sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate and ammonium chloride. It should be understood that the fertilizer composition may contain one or a combination of the fertilizers described herein.

[0010] However, typical urease inhibitors, alkylthiophosphoric triamides, and, more particularly, NBPT (N-n-butylthiophosphoric triamide), face drawbacks in their applications because NBPT is extremely difficult to handle. NBPT is a viscous, waxy, heat and water-sensitive material that cannot be used in its solid form because its use at low concentrations makes it difficult to distribute evenly on urea pellets (i.e., large granules) and in the soil. In order to distribute NBPT evenly on urea, the NBPT should be dispersed in a carrier before spraying the NBPT on the urea. Therefore, the use of a solvent system containing NBPT is desirable because, in its liquid form, the solvent system is able to distribute the NBPT into granular urea (such as urea pellets) and into liquid fertilizers containing urea. By introducing NBPT into a liquid fertilizer containing urea (e.g., urea-ammonium nitrate solution or UAN) in a solvent system, the NBPT can be better dispersed in the liquid fertilizer.

[0011] Dicyandiamide is useful as a nitrification inhibitor in aqueous agricultural applications, such as end-use fertilizer compositions, but suffers from similar drawbacks as urease inhibitors. Nitrification inhibitors, such as dicyandiamide, generally have very low solubility in water (about 41 grams per liter ("g / l")) and are therefore difficult to incorporate into the end-use aqueous fertilizer composition, especially under field conditions. As nitrification inhibitors, such as dicyandiamide, have generally low solubility, their use in low concentrations in water makes it difficult to distribute evenly on pellets (i.e., large particles) containing urea and in the soil. In order to evenly distribute dicyandiamide on pellets or particles containing urea, the dicyandiamide should be dispersed in a solvent carrier before spraying the dicyandiamide onto the urea. Therefore, the use of a solvent system containing dicyandiamide (also referred to herein as "DCD") is desirable because, in its liquid form, the solvent system is capable of distributing the dicyandiamide onto urea granules or pellets, urea ammonium nitrate granules or pellets, or other urea-containing granules or pellets, and into liquid fertilizers containing urea or urea ammonium nitrate. By introducing the dicyandiamide into a liquid fertilizer containing urea (e.g., urea-ammonium nitrate solution or UAN) in a solvent system, the dicyandiamide is better dispersed in the liquid fertilizer.

[0012] In one embodiment, the concentrated fertilizer composition includes a concentrated ammonium nitrate composition, such as, for example, UAN 18, UAN 28, UAN 30, and UAN 32.

[0013] Therefore, it is desirable to obtain a solvent system containing alkylthiophosphoric triamides, and in particular (N-n-butylthiophosphoric triamide), which has good toxicological and / or ecological characteristics and desirable characteristics in terms of low volatility, biodegradability or readily biodegradable (i.e. readily biodegradable), low toxicity or low hazard level. It is desirable to obtain a solvent system containing dicyandiamide, which has good toxicological and / or ecological characteristics and desirable characteristics in terms of low volatility, biodegradability or readily biodegradable (i.e. readily biodegradable), low toxicity or low hazard level. It is also desirable to obtain a solvent system containing a combination of dicyandiamide and alkylthiophosphoric triamides, in particular (N-n-butylthiophosphoric triamide), which has good toxicological and / or ecological characteristics and desirable characteristics in terms of low volatility, biodegradability or readily biodegradable (i.e. readily biodegradable), low toxicity or low hazard level.

By way of example, in one embodiment, the fertilizer composition comprises at least 55 wt% of DCD and / or NBPT and less than or equal to 45 wt% of a solvent blend of: (i) at least one dioxolane compound having formula (III), wherein R6 and R7 are as described above; and (ii) at least one organophosphate solvent according to formula (VIII), wherein R1, R2 and R3 are as described above.

[0122] experiment:

[0123] Preparation 1

[0124] Preparation 2

[0125] A comparative sample was prepared using the same NBPT and solvent source as Formulation 1, except that the comparative sample did not contain TEP as a stabilizer. Both Formulation 1 and the comparative sample were kept at 45°C for 2 weeks. It was observed that both Formulation 1 and the comparative sample showed color evolution, both were initially colorless. After 2 weeks, the comparative sample was observed to turn dark amber. However, Formulation 1 turned a slightly yellow transparent color, which showed a lower NBPT degradation profile compared to the comparative example that did not contain the stabilizer.

[0126] refer to Figure 1 Both Formulation 1 and the comparative sample were analyzed in a stainless steel test cell using the standard HWS (Hot Wait Search Mode) method by ARC (Accelerated Rate Calorimetry) up to 100°C. The test was conducted under air atmosphere. An onset of about 76°C was determined for the unstable sample (i.e., the comparative sample), while no onset was determined for the stable sample (i.e., Formulation 1). It is believed that this onset is an exothermic reaction that gives an indication of instability. Again referring to Figure 1 , which illustrates the residual pressure as a function of temperature for both the comparative sample (without the organophosphate compound, ie, unstable) and Formulation 1 (with the organophosphate compound, ie, stable).

[0127] Lower residual pressure is an indication of less volatile components, an indirect measure of degradation. In other words, there are less volatile components measured over the temperature range for the stable formulation (Formulation 1) as compared to the comparative sample. The measurement of less volatile components over the temperature range indicates that less NBPT is degraded in Formulation 1 as compared to the comparative sample (i.e., more NBPT is degraded in the comparative sample). This is supported by the visual observation of both samples after 2 weeks at 45°C, where the comparative sample turned a much darker color, indicating more NBPT degradation compared to Formulation 1.
