Description

Technical Field

[0001] The invention relates to a kit and the use of the kit as an adhesive or coating composition. The invention also relates to a method for bonding substrates or for coating substrates and an article made using the method. Background Art

[0002] Currently, two-component (also denoted as "2K", two-part or two-component) adhesives and coatings are widely used in various application fields, such as automotive, furniture, construction, packaging, etc. They can be solvent-based or water-soluble. Recently there has been more research and development on water-soluble or water-based two-component curing systems because they are more environmentally friendly with low volatile organic compound (VOC) values.

[0003] In the automotive industry for the production of interior equipment, the commonly used water-based two-component adhesives contain a water-based polyurethane dispersion (component A) and an emulsifiable isocyanate curing agent (component B), the latter also known as a "hardener". These two components are mixed at the automotive manufacturing site and then applied to the substrate to be bonded. In order to make the 2K adhesive easy to distinguish at the site (i.e., to identify which area has been applied with adhesive and which area has not), the mixed adhesive needs to have a color. The most common colors are blue or red.

[0004] The dispersed color paste can be added to the polyurethane dispersion as part of component A. The problem with making the color part of component A is that since component A occupies the majority of the mixture of component A and component B, when it is mixed with the hardener component B, it is not easy to judge from the appearance of the mixture whether the two components A and B are mixed uniformly enough.

[0005] On the other hand, it is not easy to make color as part of component B. The color paste cannot be simply mixed into component B because it generally contains compounds that can react with component B. In particular, isocyanates are highly reactive; it is worth noting that if water is contained in the color paste, the water can react with the hardener when stored. About three days after mixing with a water-based color dye, the hardener can actually become unusable. Therefore, in order to make the color part of component B, it may be necessary to dissolve the color dye in a non-aqueous solvent to first form a solvent-based color paste. The water content of the color dye must then be controlled at a low level, and the solvent must be carefully selected so that it does not react with component B. Typically, the solvent is selected as a solvent with a high boiling point, such as 1-methoxy-2-propyl acetate and propylene carbonate. The solvent-based color paste is then mixed with a hardener to prepare a component B with uniform color. Typically, the amount of solvent used in component B is in the range of 10-20% by weight. Because component B is a minority part of the mixture, one benefit of this approach is that it is easy to judge the state of uniform mixing from the color change of the mixture. However, one disadvantage of this approach is the need to add solvents to component B. As a result, adhesive mixtures containing solvents may not comply with health and environmental regulations aimed at reducing VOCs.

[0006] Both practices above have been in the industry for many years. For the first method (adding color to component A), customers / users have difficulty in judging how well the components are mixed. For the second method (adding color to component B), although it is easy to judge from the appearance changes to see how well the components are mixed, the adhesive mixture may not meet the limit of VOC in the adhesive, such as China National Standard GB33372-2020, which stipulates that the limit of VOC content in water-based adhesives is 50g / L.

[0007] Therefore, there is a need to provide an environmentally friendly adhesive or coating composition having color, which has low or zero VOC content and which allows for easy application by the user while maintaining good adhesion or coating properties. Summary of the invention

[0015] 0.03 to 5 parts by mass, preferably 0.05 to 2 parts by mass, and more preferably 0.05 to 1 part by mass, for example 0.08 to 0.9 parts by mass or 0.1 to 0.8 parts by mass of component (C).

[0016] According to some embodiments, the kit comprises:

[0017] -100 parts by mass of component (A);

[0018] - 2 to 10 parts by mass, preferably 3 to 8 parts by mass, and more preferably 3 to 7 parts by mass of component (B); and

[0019] - 0.05 to 1 part by mass, preferably 0.08 to 0.9 part by mass, and more preferably 0.1 to 0.8 part by mass of component (C).

[0020] According to some embodiments, the polymer of component (A) comprises at least one of polyurethane, polyacrylate, vinyl-based copolymer, and epoxy resin.

[0021] According to some embodiments, the polymer of component (A) comprises a combination of polyurethane and vinyl acetate-ethylene.

[0022] According to some embodiments, the curing agent of component (B) comprises an isocyanate compound.

[0023] According to some embodiments, the curing agent of component (B) comprises a silane compound.

[0024] According to some embodiments, the three components (A, B, C) in combined form have a total content of volatile organic compounds (VOC) of less than 10 g / L, preferably less than 5 g / L.

[0025] According to some embodiments, component (C) is in liquid form.

[0026] According to some embodiments, component (A) and / or component (C) comprises one or more additives selected from the group consisting of biocides, pH adjusters, defoamers, wetting agents, thickeners, fillers, and mixtures thereof.

[0027] According to some embodiments, the three components (A, B, C) are in separate containers.

[0028] A second object of the invention is the use of the kit described above as an adhesive for bonding two substrates together.

[0029] A further object of the invention is the use of the kit described above as a coating for coating a surface of a substrate.

[0030] A further object of the present invention is to provide a method for bonding two substrates or for coating the surfaces of a substrate, the method comprising:

[0031] - mixing together: component (A) comprising an aqueous dispersion comprising at least one polymer, component (B) comprising at least one curing agent, and component (C) comprising at least one colorant;

[0032] - applying the mixture onto the surface of a substrate; and

[0033] - optionally contacting the surface with the surface of a further substrate.

[0034] According to some embodiments, the three components (A, B, C) are provided as a kit as described above.

[0035] It is a further object of the present invention to provide an article comprising at least one layer formed by the use or method described above.

[0036] The present invention can solve the above mentioned needs. In particular, the present invention provides an environmentally friendly adhesive or coating composition with color, which has low or zero VOC content and which allows easy application by the user.

[0037] This is achieved by a kit comprising: component (A) comprising an aqueous dispersion comprising at least one polymer; component (B) comprising at least one curing agent; and component (C) comprising at least one colorant. In other words, a conventional two-component composition is replaced by a three-component composition.

[0038] Component C, which contains at least one colorant, is mixed together with components A and B on site. Since component C, which imparts color to the mixture, generally constitutes a relatively small portion of the entire mixture, the user can easily know that the mixture is sufficiently uniform by the color change. That is, uniform color of the mixture means that the mixture is uniform and ready for application.

[0039] Further, the mixture of the three components A, B, C can have a zero or low VOC content because no solvent is needed to disperse the colorant. Thus, a water-based adhesive or coating composition that meets the VOC limits set by various regulations can be obtained. In the conventional approach as explained above, a solvent must be used to provide a colored hardener. If the color dye is directly mixed in the hardener, either a solvent must be added, or water must be present and react with the hardener during storage, thereby making the hardener denatured and unusable before site application. In contrast, the present invention does not require a solvent for premixing the colorant. The three components A, B, C are mixed at the site and immediately subjected to application (e.g., within 24 hours after the three components A, B, C are mixed, preferably within 12 hours, more preferably within 1 hour, even more preferably from 30min to 5min, such as substantially immediately after mixing).

[0040] Advantageously, the composition obtained by the kit of the invention has good adhesive or coating properties, at least because the mixing of the three components can be sufficiently homogeneous, which can be easily judged by the user / customer from the appearance of the mixture.

[0041] Still further, the compositions obtained by the kit of the present invention are advantageously compatible with a variety of substrates, including, for example, various plastics, rubber, fiber cloth, ceramic, concrete, metal, wood, particle board, and chipboard. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0042] In the following description, the invention will now be described in more detail without being limited.

[0043] The present invention relates to a kit comprising a first part (component A), a second part (component B) and a third part (component C).

[0047] According to a preferred embodiment, component A may include a polyurethane dispersion (PUD) and a vinyl-based copolymer emulsion. The combined use of PUD and vinyl-based copolymer emulsion can achieve improved properties for the resulting adhesive or coating composition and can also result in reduced costs.

[0048] In some embodiments, the PUD may comprise polyurethane-based particles. The polyurethane may be obtained by reacting a polyisocyanate, a polymeric polyol, and other optional monomers. According to a preferred embodiment, the PUD may comprise an anionic aliphatic polyurethane. The PUD may be prepared or purchased directly from a supplier on the market, such as the PUD available from Covestro. U54.

[0049] In some embodiments, the vinyl-based copolymer can be prepared from a vinyl monomer and a copolymerizable monomer selected from vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, alkyl acrylates, and combinations thereof. In a preferred embodiment, the vinyl-based copolymer emulsion can include a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethylene, i.e., a vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) copolymer. VAE copolymers can be prepared by copolymerization of vinyl acetate and ethylene, wherein the vinyl acetate content is 60-95 wt % and the ethylene content is 5-40 wt %, based on the total weight of the monomers. VAE copolymers can be purchased from suppliers on the market, such as those available from Wacker. EP 645.

[0050] In some embodiments, component A may further include one or more additives. Such additives may be selected from biocides, pH regulators, defoamers, wetting agents, thickeners, fillers and mixtures thereof. The total amount of optional (one or more) additives may be typically less than 5 wt %, preferably less than 4 wt %, and more preferably in the range of from 0.01 to 3 wt %, based on the total weight of component A.

[0051] Component A may have a solid content ranging from 30 to 60 wt%, preferably from 35 to 55 wt%, and more preferably from 40 to 52 wt%. The solid content may be measured by placing 1 g of a sample in an oven at 105°C for 1 hour and weighing the remaining mass.

[0052] Advantageously, component A contains less than 0.02% by weight of colorants, pigments, dyes, pigments or tinting agents, relative to the total weight of component A. Preferably, component A does not contain any colorants, pigments, dyes, pigments or tinting agents. This does not exclude the possibility that component A may have its own natural color.

[0053] The above mentioned compounds (polymer(s) and optionally additive(s)) may be mixed together to make a packaged compound A, which may be included in a kit.

[0054] Component B

[0055] Component B comprises at least one curing agent.

[0056] Curing is the process of converting a resin from a liquid state to a solid or high viscosity state. Curing can be initiated by UV light, moisture or a curing agent. In this patent application, a curing agent is also referred to as a hardener or a cross-linking agent.

[0057] The curing agent of component B may comprise any (one or more) compounds which, when components A and B are mixed together, initiate a crosslinking or curing reaction with a functional group present on at least one polymer (base polymer) of component A. The curing reaction may be a condensation, ring closure, addition or catalytic chemical reaction to subject the thermosetting resin to irreversible changes. Such a curing agent may be appropriately selected according to the polymer contained in component A. The type of curing agent may greatly affect the mechanical properties, heat resistance, water resistance and corrosion resistance of the cured product (e.g., the adhesive layer of the coating).

[0058] In the adhesive and coating industry, conventionally used curing mechanisms include polyol / isocyanate reaction and H2O / silane reaction. For example, the curing agent of component B may contain an isocyanate compound or a silane compound.

[0059] As disclosed in this application, an isocyanate compound refers to a compound containing at least two isocyanate groups (-NCO) that can react with the hydroxyl-functional groups and / or amine-functional groups of the compounds in component A to form a urethane linker. Compounds containing three or more isocyanate groups are referred to as polyisocyanates.

[0060] In some embodiments, component B may include at least one solvent-based isocyanate compound, at least one emulsifiable or water-dispersible isocyanate compound, or a combination thereof. Since component A of the kit includes an aqueous dispersion, component B may include at least one emulsifiable or water-dispersible isocyanate compound to achieve better compatibility.

[0061] According to a preferred embodiment, component B may contain aliphatic and / or aromatic polyisocyanates. For example, polyisocyanates may be purchased from suppliers on the market, such as those available from Covestro. DN.

[0062] According to a preferred embodiment, component B may comprise an organofunctional silane compound such as an aminosilane or an epoxysilane.

[0063] In some embodiments, component B comprises at least one epoxy silane. The epoxy silanes are well known to those skilled in the art and are commercially available (e.g., available from MOMENTIVE MP 200). The epoxysilane may contain at least two glycidyloxy groups, preferably at least three glycidyloxy groups. The glycidyloxy groups have the formula shown below:

[0064]

[0065] Advantageously, component B contains less than 0.02% by weight of colorants, pigments, dyes, pigments or tinting agents, relative to the total weight of component B. Preferably, component B does not contain any colorants, pigments, dyes, pigments or tinting agents. This does not exclude the possibility that component B may have its own natural color.

[0066] Preferably, component B contains no water or contains less than 1 wt %, preferably less than 0.5 wt %, more preferably less than 0.1 wt %, even more preferably less than 0.05 wt %, ideally less than 0.01 wt % water, based on the total weight of component B.

[0067] Component C

[0068] Component C comprises at least one colorant.

[0069] The colorant may be chosen so that it imparts an arbitrary color to the final mixture of the three components A, B, C, which allows the user to know that the mixture is homogeneous and ready for application.

[0070] The colorant may comprise one or more inorganic and / or organic pigments, dyes or lakes.

[0071] The pigment can be, for example, a self-dispersed pigment, a polymer-coated pigment, or a conventional pigment such as a ground pigment. A separate dispersant can be used to enable appropriate suspension of the colorant in component C. The colorant can be any color including, but not limited to, black, blue, brown, cyan, green, white, purple, magenta, red, orange, and yellow, and spot colors from mixtures thereof. Red and blue are preferred colors.

[0080] Three-component kit

[0081] The kit according to the invention comprises the three components A, B, C as described above.

[0082] According to an embodiment of the present application, the kit comprises:

[0083] -100 parts by mass of component (A);

[0084] - 2 to 10 parts by mass, preferably 3 to 9 parts by mass, and more preferably 4 to 8 parts by mass of component (B); and

[0086] According to an embodiment of the present application, the kit comprises:

[0087] -100 parts by mass of component (A);

[0088] - 2 to 10 parts by mass, preferably 3 to 9 parts by mass, and more preferably 4 to 8 parts by mass of component (B); and

[0089] - 0.05 to 5 parts by mass, preferably 0.05 to 2 parts, and more preferably 0.05 to 1 part by mass of component (C).

[0090] Advantageously, the (B) / (C) mass ratio is comprised between 2 and 200, preferably between 15 and 180, more preferably between 30 and 160.

[0091] If the user prefers a more visible color, the content of component C can be increased.

[0092] For example, a kit may contain 20 kg of component A (total content of polymer(s) and optional additives), 1 kg of component B (total content of curing agent / hardener), and 20 g or 10 g of component C (colorant and optional additives).

[0093] According to a preferred embodiment, the three components A, B, C can be accommodated, stored or packaged in separate containers, respectively, and such separate containers of the three components can be optionally packaged together. Each container can be, for example, independently a can, bucket, basin, tube or syringe. The containers can be packaged (packaged) together by a seal or plastic foil or box or any other form of packaging. Alternatively, the containers can be provided separately without any common packaging.

[0094] Alternatively, the kit may further comprise a subkit, wherein each of the subkits may comprise one or two of the three components A, B, C. That is, for example, a first subkit comprising component A and component B (their respective containers are packaged together) is provided, while a second subkit comprising component C is provided in an independently packaged form, so that the first and second subkits constitute a kit according to the present invention. Other combinations may also be envisioned, such as a subkit of components B and C and another subkit of component A, or a subkit of components A and C and another subkit of component B.

[0095] In addition to the three encapsulated components A, B, C, the kit according to the invention may be provided with any further accessories, for example tools for facilitating mixing or application such as stirrers, spatulas and brushes, and / or optional further (one or more) additives, which may be packaged separately or they may be packaged together with the containers of components A, B, C.

[0096] Kit and use of a mixture obtained by mixing the three components

[0097] The three components A, B, C as described above are intended to be mixed together before application. The three components are mixed until the color imparted by the colorant of component C is well blended or incorporated into the entire mixture and the mixture has a uniform, even color. Components A, B and C are preferably provided by a kit as described above. Alternatively, these components may be obtained separately (separately) in part or in whole.

[0098] Any method can be used to mix the three components. For example, a mechanical stirrer can be used to mix the three components, preferably at a stirring speed of 300-500 rpm for a period of time from 1 min to 30 min, more preferably from 5 to 15 min (particularly, the period starts when the three components are in contact and ends when the mixing of the three components ends).

[0099] According to a preferred embodiment, the three components A, B, C can be added and mixed together substantially all at once. Alternatively, components A and B can be mixed together first, followed by further adding component C to the mixture. The three components A, B, C can be added and mixed one by one in no particular order.

[0100] Preferably, the resulting mixture obtained by mixing the three components A, B, C contains no VOC or has a VOC content of less than 10 g / L, preferably less than 5 g / L, more preferably less than 2 g / L, even more preferably less than 1 g / L measured according to GB33372-2020.

[0101] When components A and B are mixed, the at least one polymer (base polymer) of component A and the curing agent of component B can react with each other, resulting in crosslinking or curing. Such crosslinking or curing reactions are known per se in the field of 2K adhesives.

[0102] Preferably, the mixing of the three components A, B, C is carried out within 24 hours, preferably within 12 hours, more preferably within 1 hour, even more preferably from 30 min to 5 min before applying the mixture to the surface (one or more). For example, the mixture can be applied to the surface (one or more) substantially immediately after the three components A, B, C are mixed.

[0103] According to some embodiments, the mixture obtained by mixing the three components A, B, C according to the present invention can be used as an adhesive composition to bond two substrates together. Thus, after crosslinking, the mixture can form an adhesive layer that holds the two substrates together. More specifically, after coating the mixture on the surface of the substrate, the surface of another substrate can be brought into contact with the coated surface to bond the two substrates together.

[0104] According to other embodiments, the mixture obtained by mixing the three components A, B, C according to the invention can be used as a coating on the surface of a substrate. Thus, after crosslinking, the mixture can form a layer covering the surface of the substrate, for example, to change one or more properties of its surface.

[0105] Thus, the article produced after application of the mixture according to the invention comprises at least one layer or surface coated with said mixture.

[0106] When the mixture is used as a coating, it can be an external surface of an article.

[0107] When the mixture is used as an adhesive, it can be the inner surface of the article, ie the surface of the article in contact with, for example, another surface of the article, and the mixture located between these two surfaces.

[0108] The mixture obtained by mixing the three components A, B, C according to the present invention is well suitable for a variety of substrates, such as plastics (e.g., thermoplastic materials), rubber, metals (e.g., steel, aluminum), wood, paper, cardboard, ceramics, and glass, textiles, fabrics, leather, mineral foundations, etc. Examples of thermoplastic materials include high impact polystyrene (HIPS), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polycarbonate (PC), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyphenylene oxide (PPO). In some other embodiments, the substrate may have a primer layer thereon, and the mixture according to the present invention is formed on the primer layer of the substrate to form a top coating.

[0109] The present invention therefore also relates to a method for bonding two substrates or for coating the surfaces of substrates, comprising:

[0110] - mixing together: component (A) comprising an aqueous dispersion comprising at least one polymer, component (B) comprising at least one curing agent, and component (C) comprising at least one colorant;

[0111] - applying the mixture onto the surface of a substrate; and

[0112] - optionally contacting the surface with the surface of a further substrate.

[0113] The mixing step is preferably as described above. In particular, a mechanical stirrer may be used to mix the three components for a period of from 1 min to 30 min, more preferably from 5 to 15 min. Further, as described above, the mixing of the three components A, B, C is performed within 24 hours, preferably within 12 hours, more preferably within 1 hour, even more preferably from 30 min to 5 min before the mixture is applied to the surface.

[0114] When components A, B and C are not mixed together substantially all at once, it is preferred that less than 5 minutes, more preferably less than 1 minute, elapse between the addition of each component to the mixture.

[0115] The substrate(s) implemented in the method may be as described above.

[0116] Advantageously, the three components (A, B, C) are provided by the kit described above.

[0127] After mixing, different formulations (as shown in Table 2) were tested with various adhesion performance tests (substrate ABS, surface layer: PVC foil). The procedure was as follows:

[0128] -Step 1: Spray the mixture on the ABS substrate and control the mixture weight to 100-120g / m 2 ;

[0129] - Step 2: Place the coated ABS substrate in an oven at 50°C for 10 min;

[0130] - Step 3: hot pressing the surface layer and ABS lamination (hot pressing conditions: upper plate 70°C, lower plate 70°C, pressure 2Mpa, maintained for 10 seconds);

[0131] - Step 4: 180° peel tests were performed under different conditions at 23°C using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) (available from Instron), with the clamp speed set at 300 mm / min.

[0132] The results are shown in Table 3 (unless otherwise specified, the samples were kept at room temperature (about 23° C.) for the times indicated in the table before the peel test was performed).

[0136] SF=Substrate damage

[0137] All samples were found to be acceptable in terms of initial strength (1 min), final strength (1 day) and aged strength (1 day at room temperature followed by 90°C for 30 min). Further, all samples were found to have a high percentage of substrate failure (SF), indicating that the adhesive itself provided sufficient strength.

[0138] Comprehensive Study on Example 3

[0139] Example 3 above was selected for comprehensive evaluation. The substrate and evaluation method were the same as those for the adhesion performance test (peel test) above. The additional conditions are listed below:

[0140] 1) 8 cycles of the following sequence:

[0141] The temperature was increased from 23°C (50% relative humidity (RH)) to 80°C (80% RH) within 60 min;

[0142] Maintain at 80°C (80% RH) for 240 min;

[0143] The temperature was lowered from 80°C (80% RH) to -40°C within 120 min;

[0144] kept at -40°C for 240 min; and

[0145] The temperature was raised from -40°C to 23°C (50% RH) within 60 min.

[0146] 2) 50℃, 95%RH, 4 days, tested after cooling to room temperature (RT, 23℃)

[0147] 3) 110℃, 1 day, tested after cooling to RT (23℃)

[0148] 4) Tested at -30℃

[0149] The results are shown in Table 4.
