[0029] Transport Refrigeration Units (TRUs) play an important role in keeping temperature-sensitive cargo within an optimal temperature range during transport. These units use compressors to circulate refrigerants and manage the temperature within an insulated chamber. The TRU can be fluidly connected to the surrounding environment and the enclosed (cargo) space of a container or trailer associated with a cargo truck or other vehicle. Exemplary transport cargo spaces include cargo areas of light commercial vehicles, cargo trailers, railroad cars, intermodal containers (shipping containers). TRUs can also be used with auxiliary fixed units. TRUs can be configured to maintain a predefined thermal environment within the space. Variable speed compressors are famous for their ability to adapt to changing cooling needs (providing enhanced energy efficiency and temperature control compared to traditional fixed speed compressors).
[0030] However, the implementation of variable speed compressors in TRUs presents certain challenges. One of the key challenges is the excessive noise generated by the compressor when operating at high speeds. As compressor speeds increase, noise and vibration levels can become uncomfortably high, leading to concerns about potential noise pollution for both operators and bystanders. In addition, long-term exposure to excessive noise can have adverse effects on personnel near the TRU.
[0031] Furthermore, operation of a variable speed compressor at high speeds can negatively impact the structural integrity and stability of both the compressor and the TRU as a whole. The increased mechanical forces and vibrations associated with high speed operation can lead to premature wear of components of the TRU and compressor. This accelerated degradation can result in frequent maintenance and repair requirements, leading to increased downtime and operating costs. Furthermore, structural instability caused by vibrations can compromise the overall integrity of the TRU, potentially leading to a shortened lifespan.
[0032] What is therefore needed is a solution that addresses the challenges posed by variable speed compressors in TRUs by providing an improved and effective solution to stabilize the compressor, reduce compressor vibrations, and attenuate noise when operating at high speeds.
[0033] Reference Figures 1A to 1D , a vibration stabilizer assembly 100 (hereinafter referred to as assembly 100) for a compressor 102 in a transport refrigeration unit (TRU) is shown. The assembly 100 may include a plurality of first buffers 200 (collectively referred to herein as first buffers 200 or bottom buffers 200 or first isolators 200) constructed between a bottom plate 106 associated with the compressor 102 and a frame 104-1 of the TRU. The compressor 102 may be a variable speed compressor 102; however, the compressor 102 may also be a single speed compressor 102. In one or more embodiments, the first buffer 200 may be constructed between the bottom plate 106 and the frame 104-1 of the TRU using a bolt and nut assembly so that no contact is maintained between the bottom plate 106 and the frame 104-1 of the compressor 102, and the load or vibration from the bottom plate 106 of the compressor 102 may be transmitted to the frame 104-1 of the TRU via the bolts 210 and the first buffer 200, wherein the first buffer 200 may stabilize the vibration.
[0034] The first bumper 200 may include an annular section, and holes may be provided on the base plate 106 and the frame 104-1 to facilitate fastening the base plate 106 and the frame 104-1 using the first bumper 200 and the bolt and nut assembly. In one or more embodiments, the first bumper 200 may include a rigid sleeve 206 made of steel (but not limited to the like) coaxially configured and extending longitudinally through the corresponding annular section of the first bumper 200. In one or more embodiments, the first buffer 200 can be constructed between the base plate 106 of the compressor 102 and the frame 104-1 of the TRU using a bolt and nut assembly, such that the head 210-1 of the bolt 210 rests on the top of the first buffer 200, and the shank of the bolt 210 extends through the rigid sleeve 206, wherein the free end 210-2 of the shank at least partially extends outboard from the bottom of the frame 104-1 and is further tightened using a nut 216, and the rigid sleeve 206 extends between the bottom of the head 210-1 of the bolt 210 and the top of the frame 104-1. However, in one or more embodiments, the first bumper 200 may be constructed between the base plate 106 of the compressor 102 and the frame 104-1 of the TRU using a bolt and nut assembly such that the head 210-1 of the bolt 210 rests on the bottom of the first bumper 200 and the shank of the bolt 210 extends through the rigid sleeve 206, wherein the free end 210-2 of the shank at least partially extends outboard from the top of the frame 104-1 and is further tightened using a nut 216, and the rigid sleeve 206 extends between the bottom of the head 210-1 of the bolt 210 and the top of the frame 104-1. Later in conjunction with FIG. 2A to FIG. 2D A detailed configuration of the first buffer 200 is described.
[0035] In one or more embodiments, each of the first buffers 200 may have a predetermined profile and be made of an elastomer having an axial to radial stiffness ratio of 2:1, 3:1, or 4:1. In one or more embodiments, the first buffer 200 may have a radial stiffness of less than 1000 pounds per inch. In one or more embodiments, the first buffer 200 may have a radial stiffness of less than 600 pounds per inch. In addition, in one or more embodiments, the first buffer 200 may have an axial stiffness ranging from 4000 to 600 pounds per inch and a radial stiffness ranging from 1000 to 300 pounds per inch. Although various embodiments of the disclosure have been described for first buffers having specific radial and axial stiffness or specific axial to radial ratios, however, the teachings of the disclosure are equally applicable to first buffers having any other values of radial stiffness, axial stiffness, or axial to radial stiffness, which values may be selected based on the weight of the compressor, the drive frequency, the operating speed of the compressor, and the characteristics of the frame or structure on which the compressor is mounted, so as to optimize isolation, and all such embodiments are fully within the scope of the subject disclosure.
[0036] In one or more embodiments, the assembly 100 may include one or more clamping rings 108 extending around the top end of the compressor 102 and connected to each other. The assembly 100 may also include a mounting plate 110 coupled to at least one of the clamping rings 108 and further coupled to the frame 104-2 of the TRU, wherein a connection point 104-2 of the mounting plate 110 on the frame 104-1 of the TRU is different from a connection point 104-1 of the bottom plate 106 on the frame 104-1. The connection point 104-2 of the mounting plate 110 may be at a vertical section of the frame 104-1, and the connection point 104-1 of the bottom plate 106 may be at a bottom horizontal section of the frame 104-1 of the TRU.
[0037] In addition, the mounting plate 110 can be coupled to the corresponding clamping ring 108 using at least one second bumper 300 (also referred to herein as a second bumper 300 or a top bumper 300 or a second isolator 300). In one or more embodiments, the second bumper 300 can be a stud mount made of an elastomer having a radial stiffness of less than 1000 pounds per inch. In one or more embodiments, each of the second bumpers 300 can have an axial to radial stiffness ratio of 6:1. In addition, in one or more embodiments, the second bumpers 300 can have an axial stiffness ranging from 6000 to 600 pounds per inch and a radial stiffness ranging from 1000 to 200 pounds per inch. Although various embodiments of the disclosure have been described with respect to a second damper having specific radial and axial stiffnesses or a specific axial-to-radial ratio, the teachings of the disclosure are equally applicable to a second damper having any other values of radial stiffness, axial stiffness, or axial-to-radial stiffness, which values may be selected based on the weight of the compressor, the drive frequency, the operating speed of the compressor, and the characteristics of the frame or structure on which the compressor is mounted to optimize isolation, and all such embodiments are fully within the scope of the subject disclosure.
[0038] Thus, the first (bottom) buffer 200 may minimize (or isolate) the transfer of loads or vibrations between the base plate 106 and the frame 104-1 of the TRU, while the second (top) buffer 300 may minimize (or isolate) the transfer of loads or vibrations between the top of the compressor 102 and the frame 104-1 of the TRU.
[0039] In addition, the profile or axial to radial stiffness ratio of the first and second buffers 200, 300 can help stabilize vibrations of the compressor 102 and attenuate noise caused by the vibrations. In addition, the rigid sleeve 206 extending through the first buffer 200 can prevent direct contact between the bottom plate 106 (of the compressor 102) and the frame 104-1 of the TRU, or can withstand the impact / load of the bottom plate 106 to the frame 104-1 of the TRU in the event of an elastomer failure of the first buffer 200, thereby acting as a fail-safe mechanism.
[0040] Reference FIG. 2A to FIG. 2D In one or more embodiments, the first buffer 200 may include a first component 202 including a first cylindrical base 202-1 having a radially extending first flange 202-2 and a centrally positioned first annular section extending along a central axis of the first component 202, wherein the first cylindrical base 202-1 and the first flange 202-2 are integral parts of the first component 202, resulting in a unitary structure. The first buffer 200 may also include a second component 204 including a second cylindrical base 204-1 having a radially extending second flange 204-2 and a centrally positioned second annular section extending along a central axis of the first component 204, wherein the second cylindrical base 204-1 and the second flange 204-2 are integral parts of the second component 204, resulting in a unitary structure. The first component 202 can be coaxially configured with the second component 204 so that the first cylindrical base 202-1 and the second cylindrical base 204-1 remain in contact, and the first annular segment and the second annular segment remain in a straight line. In one or more embodiments, the first component 202 and the second component 204 can be different structures, however, the first component 202 and the second component 204 can also be integrally connected to form a single structure.
[0041] The assembly 100 may also include a plurality of first holes at first predefined positions on the base plate 106 and a plurality of second holes at second predefined positions on the frame 104-1 of the TRU. The first holes of the base plate 106 and the second holes of the frame 104-1 may be aligned in line to facilitate fastening the first bumpers 200 to the base plate 106 and the frame 104-1 via the bolts 210 and nuts 216. In one or more embodiments, each of the first bumpers 200 may be fastened to the base plate 106 and the frame 104-1 such that a rim area of the corresponding base plate 106 around the first hole may rest between the first flange 202-2 and the second flange 204-2 around the first cylindrical base 202-1 and the second cylindrical base 204-1 of the first bumper 200 while preventing contact between the base plate 106 and the frame 104-1. Therefore, radial loads or vibrations from the bottom plate 106 may be radially transmitted to the first and second cylindrical bases of the first buffer 200 , and axial loads or vibrations from the bottom plate 106 may be axially transmitted to the first and second flanges of the first buffer 200 .
[0042] In addition, the assembly 100 may include a first gasket 208-1, which is constructed between the first flange 202-2 of the first buffer 200 and the head 210-1 of the bolt 210 to prevent direct contact between the bolt head 210-1 and the first buffer 200, and further evenly distribute the load of the bolt head 210-1 on the first flange 202-2. In addition, the assembly 100 may include a second gasket 208-2 of a second thickness, which is constructed between the second flange 204-2 and the top surface of the frame 104-1 to fill the gap (if any) between the bottom of the second flange 204-2 and the frame 104-1, which may not be required if the compressor 102 is shorter. The second thickness may be selected based on the gap between the bottom of the second flange 204-2 and the frame 104-1 to securely fix the first buffer 200 to the frame 104-1 and the bottom plate 106.
[0043] In one or more embodiments, the bolt 210 may extend through the rigid sleeve 206 associated with each of the first buffers 200 such that the head 210-1 of the bolt 210 rests on top of the first gasket 208-1 and the shank of the bolt 210 extends through the rigid sleeve 206, wherein the free end 210-2 of the shank at least partially extends outboard from the bottom of the frame 104-1 and is further tightened using a nut 216, and the rigid sleeve 206 extends between the first gasket 208-1 and the second gasket 208-2.
[0044] In one or more embodiments, the assembly 100 may include a spacer 212 of a first thickness (such as 1 mm but not limited to the like) configured between the bottom surface of the edge region of the bottom plate 106 and the top surface of the second flange 204-2 to fill the gap (if any) between the bottom plate 106 and the second component 204, however, if there is no gap between the bottom plate 106 and the second component 204, the spacer 212 may not be required. The spacer 212 may also evenly distribute the load of the edge region of the bottom plate 106 on the second flange 204-2 and also prevent the edge region from damaging the elastic body of the second flange 204-2. In one or more embodiments, the spacer 212 may be an annular component having an inner diameter equal to the diameter of the second annular segment and an outer diameter greater than or equal to the diameter of the second flange 204-2.
[0045] In one or more embodiments, the assembly 100 may include an annular filler 214 disposed in the second hole of the frame 104-1. The annular filler 214 may be configured to allow the bolt 210 to extend therethrough while limiting movement of the bolt 210 relative to the frame 104-1 in the corresponding second hole. However, if there is no gap between the bolt 210 and the second hole of the frame 104-1 or if the bolt 210 remains securely disposed in the second hole, the annular filler 214 may not be required.
[0046] Return to reference Figures 1A to 1D In one or more embodiments, the clamping rings 108 at the top of the compressor 102 may be fastened to each other using first fasteners 112, and the mounting plate 110 may be fastened to the frame 104-2 of the TRU using second fasteners 114.
