Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a pre-portioned container containing a beverage or foodstuff precursor and to an electrically operated beverage or foodstuff preparation system with which a beverage or foodstuff is prepared from the pre-portioned container. Background Art
[0002] A system for preparing a beverage comprises a beverage preparation machine and a capsule. The capsule comprises a single serving of a beverage forming precursor material, for example, ground coffee or tea. The beverage preparation machine is arranged to perform a beverage preparation process on the capsule, typically by exposing pressurized, heated water to the precursor material. As part of the preparation process, the capsule is guided through the machine by a series of complex interactions to load, process, and discharge the capsule, through various mechanisms of the machine and primarily the flange portion of the capsule. Processing the capsule in this manner causes the precursor material to be at least partially extracted from the capsule as a beverage.
[0003] This configuration of beverage preparation machines is becoming increasingly popular due to the enhanced user convenience compared to conventional beverage preparation machines (eg compared to a manually operated moka pot / stove-top espresso maker).
[0004] Due to the complex movement of the capsules through the machine and exposure to pressurized, heated water, only aluminum-based capsules have been implemented with a high degree of reliability so far. In fact, it has been found that other materials, such as paper-based or pulp-based materials, tend to stick in the machine, have an unreliable tightness to the machine or cause other material-related errors. It turns out that the aluminum capsule design (dimensions and geometric design) cannot be directly applied to capsules made of materials other than aluminum, such as capsules made of cellulose-based materials.
[0005] For example, due to technical reasons related to the production process, some designs available for aluminum capsules, such as some capsules (e.g. The flange and curling (with winding) on the edge of the capsule) cannot be used for cellulose-based capsules.
[0006] Specifically, in In the VertuoLine system, the total thickness at the rim (comprising the rim itself, the membrane closing the capsule and the coding system) should be reduced to a minimum value compatible with existing beverage preparation machine specifications.
[0007] Therefore, it is desirable to develop capsule designs that are compatible with capsules made, for example, of cellulose-based materials that can be produced according to currently available processes and that can be extracted in already existing beverage preparation machines.
[0008] Therefore, although efforts have been invested in developing capsules made of materials other than aluminum or plastic, further improvements are still needed. Summary of the invention
[0009] The present disclosure provides a container for use with a machine for preparing beverages and / or foodstuffs or precursors thereof, the container comprising: a storage portion comprising a chamber having a base for containing a precursor material; a closing membrane for closing the storage portion; and a flange portion presenting the features according to claim 1.
[0010] In more detail, the container is designed to be inserted into and used with a preparation machine for preparing a beverage and / or a foodstuff or a precursor thereof from a precursor material stored in the container by introducing a liquid into the container and passing the liquid through the precursor material. The container comprises:
[0011] - a cup-shaped body comprising a bottom end and an open end, the cup-shaped body forming a storage portion for containing the precursor material;
[0012] - a closing membrane for closing the storage portion at the open end of the cup-shaped body; and
[0013] - an annular flange-like rim at least partially engaging with a closing member of a beverage preparation machine, said annular flange-like rim being made of a cellulose pulp-based material and extending outwardly from the cup-shaped body, said flange-like rim comprising an annular force ring.
[0014] According to the invention, the flange-like rim also comprises at least two different parts, namely
[0015] - a first portion connected to the annular force ring; and
[0016] - a second portion extending from the storage portion and onto which the closing membrane is sealed, said second portion connecting the storage portion and the closing membrane.
[0017] By providing a single surface for the sealing of the closing membrane, the particular design proposed allows the production of cellulose based containers which can be used in existing beverage preparation machines in an accurate and safe manner.
[0018] In particular, the flange-like rim comprising the first portion, the second portion and the annular force ring is integral with the cup-shaped body. This allows a one-step forming process of the capsule without the need to connect different parts of the capsule body.
[0019] In the proposed embodiment, the first part and the second part of the flange-like edge are parallel. The specific arrangement of the second part of the flange-like edge supporting the closing membrane allows for easier piercing of the outlet opening on the closing membrane. In addition, the proposed design is advantageously envisaged to be proposed in cellulose-based materials, such as in wood pulp-based materials.
[0020] In the proposed alternative embodiment, the first portion and the second portion are inclined relative to each other at an angle α. In particular, the angle α between the first portion and the second portion may be between + / - 0.1° and + / - 88.5°. This inclination between the first portion and the second portion makes it possible to increase the sealing surface between the closing membrane and the second portion of the flange-like rim.
[0021] In the proposed design, the first portion of the flange-like rim has a total thickness lower than 220 microns, allowing the capsule to be used in all existing beverage preparation machines, ideally around 200 + / - 20 microns.
[0022] In the proposed embodiment, the flange-like rim comprises a coding element. The coding element may be located on a side of the flange-like rim facing the storage portion. As a preferred option, the coding element may be located on the first portion of the flange-like rim.
[0023] According to further characteristics, the width of the second portion of the flange-like rim is between 0.2 cm and 1 cm. The proposed dimensions allow sufficient sealing surface for effective sealing of the closing membrane, thereby ensuring complete sealing of the capsule.
[0024] More specifically, the depth (d) between the first and second portions of the flange-like rim may be between 0.1 mm and 5 mm. The depth defined between the two portions results in the positioning of the membrane at different depths, thereby allowing membranes with different elastic properties and then exploring new materials for the membrane to be pierced.
[0025] The container comprising the flange-like rim has a density of the cellulose pulp-based material between 150 gsm and 500 gsm. The proposed density range allows limiting the water absorption of the final container. It also allows fine-tuning the softness / hardness of different parts of the container as required.
[0026] In addition to referring to a container, the present invention also proposes a group of different containers for preparing beverages and / or foodstuffs or precursors thereof from precursor materials in a preparation machine, the group of containers comprising a container body, the total depth of which is different for at least two containers of the group, preferably for at least three containers of the group. This allows to recommend beverages of different sizes according to the needs or habits of the consumer.
[0027] The invention also proposes a container system for preparing a beverage and / or a food material or a precursor thereof from a precursor material in a preparation machine, wherein the container system comprises a container or one or more containers of a group of containers as claimed, wherein the container is further designed to form a restriction or a restriction valve for the beverage and / or food material and / or precursor leaving the container alone or in combination with a closing member of the preparation machine. Thanks to this, the extraction parameters of the container can be adjusted and the amount of crema produced during extraction can be adjusted.
[0028] The proposed invention also relates to a system comprising one or more containers and a machine for preparing a beverage and / or a food material or a precursor thereof, wherein the machine comprises a container holder for holding a capsule at least at a flange-like rim; a liquid injection member for supplying liquid into the container; a valve member for engaging with at least a portion of the flange-like rim of the container when the capsule is inserted in the machine; a processing unit for processing the precursor material of the container, the processing unit comprising a piercer; and an electric circuit for controlling the processing unit.
[0029] The present invention also relates to the use of a container or one or more containers of a group of containers in a centrifugal beverage machine, wherein the container is centrifuged in the beverage preparation machine and wherein at least a portion of the flange-like rim is engaged by a portion of the closing member of the beverage preparation machine; thereby forming a valve member for selectively blocking and / or restricting the flow of centrifuged liquid flowing out of the container.

[0079] [Container handling unit]
[0080] The container handling unit 20 may be implemented using a range of configurations, as illustrated in Examples 1 to 4 below:
[0081] refer to Figure 4A and Figure 4B A first example of a container handling unit 20 is for handling containers arranged as capsules 6 (a suitable example of a capsule is shown in Figure 6The container handling unit 20 is configured as an extraction unit 32 to extract the beverage from the capsule 6. The extraction unit 32 comprises a container / capsule holding portion 34 and a closing member 36. The extraction unit 32 is movable to a capsule receiving position ( Figure 4A ), in which the capsule receiving position the capsule holding portion 34 and the closing member 36 are arranged to receive the capsule 6. The extraction unit 32 is movable to the capsule extraction position ( Figure 4B ), in which capsule extraction position the capsule holding portion 34 and the closure member 36 form a chamber around the capsule 6 and beverage can be extracted from the capsule 6. The extraction unit 32 may be actuator driven or manually movable between said positions.
[0082] The extraction unit 32 integrates an image capture unit 46 in the capsule holding portion 34. The image capture unit is combined with Figure 2 The disclosed code reading system 18 is part of the disclosed code reading system 18. Therefore, when the extraction unit 32 is in the capsule extraction unit ( Figure 4B ), the code (not presented) (used to encode preparation information and located on capsule 6) is red.
[0083] The outlet 30 of the fluid conditioning system 22 ( Figure 3 ) is arranged as an injection head and / or piercer 38 to pierce the container to form one or more inlets for injecting the conditioned fluid into the capsule 6 in the capsule extraction position. The beverage outlet 40 is pierced (piercing member not presented) / arranged for capturing the extracted beverage and delivering it from the extraction unit 32 to a consumer cup (not presented).
[0084] In this case, the extraction unit 32 is arranged for preparing a beverage by applying a conditioned fluid (typically water) at low pressure (less than 8 bar) to the precursor material inside the capsule 6 by means of an inlet formed by a piercer 38. The capsule is rotated at a given rotational speed (depending in particular on the material precursor inside the capsule and / or the desired organoleptic properties of the beverage to be obtained), and the beverage is extracted from the capsule 6 by centrifugation. Examples of suitable aluminum capsules are currently commercially available Vertuo capsules. Examples of suitable capsules are provided in EP 2594171 A1 and suitable extraction processes are provided in EP 2155019 A1, both references being incorporated herein by reference.
[0085] In a variant embodiment not shown, the extraction unit is arranged for preparing a beverage by applying a pressurized (e.g. 10 to 20 bar), heated (e.g. 50° C. to 98° C.) fluid to the precursor material in the capsule. The pressure increases over a predetermined amount of time until it exceeds the pressure of the rupture portion (which is the closing member of the capsule), which causes said member to open / rupture and dispense the beverage to the beverage outlet.
[0086] In a second embodiment not shown, although the injection head and the beverage outlet are shown as being arranged on the holding part and the closing member, respectively, they may be arranged alternatively, including: the injection head and the beverage outlet are arranged on the closing member and the holding part, respectively; or both are arranged on the same part. In addition, the extraction unit may include two parts arranged as a capsule holding part, for example for a capsule symmetrically around a flange, including Professional capsules.
[0087] In a third example (not illustrated), the capsule processing unit operates by dissolving a beverage precursor selected to dissolve under high pressure and temperature fluid. The extraction unit is arranged similarly to the first and second examples, however, the pressure is lower and therefore a sealed extraction unit is not required. Specifically, the fluid may be injected into the cover of the capsule and the rupture portion is located in the base of the storage portion of the capsule. Examples of suitable capsules are Dolce Gusto capsules. Examples of suitable extraction units are disclosed in EP 1472156 A1 and in EP 1784344 A1, which are incorporated herein by reference.
[0088] In a fourth example (not shown), the container processing unit is arranged as a mixing unit to prepare a beverage or food precursor stored in a container, which is a receiver, and the receiver is used for consumption by the end user. The mixing unit includes a stirrer for mixing (e.g., a planetary mixer or a spiral mixer or a vertical cutting mixer) and a heat exchanger for heating / cooling the beverage or food precursor in the receiver. The fluid supply system can also supply fluid to the container. An example of this arrangement is provided in WO 2014067987A1, which is incorporated herein by reference.
[0089] [Control circuit]
[0090] refer to Figure 5 , the circuit 16 is implemented as a control circuit 48 to control the processing unit 14 to perform the preparation process. Figure 5 In the embodiment of the present invention, for illustrative purposes, the processing unit 14 is illustrated as a first example, and the processing unit includes a container processing unit 20 and a fluid supply unit 22.
[0091] Circuits 16, 48 at least partially implement (e.g., in combination with hardware): an input unit 50 for receiving input from a user confirming that the machine 4 will perform a preparation process; a processor 52 for receiving input from the input unit 50 and for providing a control output to the processing unit 14; and a feedback system 54 for providing feedback from the processing unit 54 during the preparation process, which feedback can be used to control the preparation process.
[0092] The input unit 50 is implemented as a user interface, which may include one or more of the following: a button, such as a joystick button or a push button; a joystick; an LED; a graphic or character LCD; a graphic screen with touch sensing and / or screen edge buttons; other similar devices; a sensor for determining whether a container has been supplied to the machine by a user. The input unit 50 may also be conceived as a contactless user interface.
[0093] The feedback system 54 may implement one or more of the following or other feedback control based operations:
[0094] a flow sensor for determining the outlet 30 to the fluid supply system 22
[0095] (exist Figure 3 ), the flow sensor can be used to meter the correct amount of fluid to the container 6 and thus regulate the power to the pump 26;
[0096] a temperature sensor for determining the temperature of the fluid to the outlet 30 of the fluid supply unit 22, which temperature sensor can be used to ensure that the temperature of the fluid to the container 6 is correct and to regulate the power to the heat exchanger 28 accordingly);
[0097] - a level sensor for determining whether the level of the fluid in the reservoir 24 is sufficient for the preparation process;
[0098] - a position sensor for determining the position of the extraction unit 32 (e.g.
[0099] capsule extraction position or capsule receiving position).
[0100] It will be appreciated that the circuits 16, 48 are suitably applicable to other examples of the processing unit 14, for example: for the second example of the container processing system, the feedback system may be used to control the rotation speed of the capsule.
[0101] [container]
[0102] refer to Figure 6 , the container 6 used with the first example of the processing unit 14 comprises a container arranged as a capsule 6 .
[0103] The capsule is preferably a single use or refillable capsule. The capsule contains a dose of precursor material, such as coffee, for preparing a coffee beverage.
[0104] The capsule 6 comprises: a closing membrane 56; a storage portion 58; and an annular flange-like rim 60, which surrounds the capsule 6. The storage portion 58 and the annular flange-like rim 60 form a container body. The details of the flange-like rim 60 and the position of the closing membrane 56 are shown in FIG. Figure 6 Not presented in detail and will be combined with Figure 8 and described in detail below.
[0105] The local container coordinate axes include a depth direction 100, a longitudinal direction 102, and a transverse direction 104. A rotation axis 106 extends in the depth direction 100 and defines a radial direction 108 that is in a plane defined by the longitudinal direction 102 and the transverse direction 104.
[0106] The capsule 6 has a circular cross section when viewed in a plane defined by the longitudinal direction 102 and the transverse direction 104 , and is preferably designed to be rotationally symmetrical about a central axis 106 .
[0107] The storage portion 58 includes a closed bottom end forming a base 78 and an open end defining a chamber 74 for storing a precursor material (not shown). The chamber 74 includes a side wall 76 connecting the open end and the base 78. The side wall 76 extends mainly in the depth direction 100 from the base 78 to a distal edge 82 connected to the flange-like rim 60, wherein the proximal side and the distal side are defined relative to the base 78. The side wall 76 is in the form of a raised portion from the base 78 to the distal edge 82.
[0108] The closing film 56 is arranged in a plane defined by the longitudinal direction 102 and the transverse direction 104. The closing film 56 closes the storage portion 58 at its opening and comprises a flexible film. The closing film 56 has an outer surface 55 facing away from the storage portion 58 and an inner surface 57 facing the storage portion 58. If desired, the closing film can also be envisaged as a rigid closing element, such as a cover.
[0109] In the proposed embodiment, the closing film 56 is made of food grade material and forms a gas barrier layer. It can be made of aluminum alloy, plastic (PP, EVOH...), a laminate of plastic and aluminum alloy or a paper-based material with oxygen barrier properties or any suitable material, preferably made of compostable and / or biodegradable material. If necessary, the closing film can also be a water / moisture barrier. The thickness of the closing film is generally between 10 microns and 250 microns, preferably around 100 microns.
[0110] The flange-like rim 60 is arranged for interconnecting the storage portion 58 and the closing membrane 56 to hermetically seal the precursor material inside the storage portion 58. The flange-like rim 60 is arranged as an annular ring element extending in radial direction 108 from an inner edge 66 to an outer edge 67.
[0111] The flange-like rim 60 comprises an annular force ring 63 terminating at an outer edge 67 and further comprises a first portion 61 connected to the annular force ring 63. Depending on the design of the beverage preparation machine, at least a portion of the flange-like rim 60 may engage with a closure member and / or a capsule holder of the preparation machine. The first portion 61 is arranged in a plane P defined by the longitudinal direction 102 and the transverse direction 104.
[0112] The flange-like rim 60 is envisioned to be adapted and used in different generations of different beverage preparation machines. For example, for a first generation of beverage preparation machines, the annular force ring 63 will engage with the closing member 36, thereby forming part of a valve member for selectively blocking and / or restricting the flow of centrifuged liquid flowing out of the container. For a more recent generation of beverage preparation machines, the valve member is formed by the interaction of the closing member of the beverage preparation machine with the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60.
[0113] The flange-like rim 60 comprises an additional portion defined as a second portion 62 which extends from the side wall 76 of the storage portion 58 and to which the closing membrane 56 is sealed, the second portion 62 connecting the side wall 76 of the storage portion 58 and the closing membrane 56 .
[0114] The second portion 62 presents an upper surface 70 which is connected to the periphery of the inner surface 57 of the closing membrane 56 by adhesive, mechanical seal or any available sealing means. The lower surface 71 of the first portion 61 and the lower surface 72 of the second portion 62 of the flange-like rim 60 face the storage portion 58.
[0115] As presented, the distal edge 82 of the side wall 76 abuts the inner edge 66 of the flange-like rim 60 .
[0116] In the present disclosure, the storage portion 58 and the flange-like rim 60 are integrally formed to form the capsule 6 .
[0117] The flange-like rim 60 is made of a cellulose pulp based material, for example a wood pulp based material.
[0118] The method of forming a capsule (having a flange-like rim and a storage portion) may comprise wet forming one or both of the flange-like rim and the storage portion and pressing, for example, via the same mould / press.
[0119] The capsule 6 has a diameter of 2 to 8 cm and an axial length of 2 to 8 cm. Details of the construction, manufacture and / or (beverage) extraction of the container and / or closure member are disclosed, for example, in EP 2155021, EP 2316310, EP 2152608, EP2378932, EP2470053, EP2509473, EP2667757 and EP 2528485.
[0120] In variant embodiments not shown: the capsule may have other cross-sectional shapes, including square, other polygonal or elliptical; the closing membrane may be rigid or in other non-membrane forms; the flange is alternatively connected to the upper surface of the closing membrane, for example, by curling; the side walls are alternatively arranged, including having a reverse taper or aligned with the depth direction, or being curved; the base is alternatively arranged, including being flat or curved; the flange portion is connected to the storage portion rather than being integrally formed; the closing membrane is arranged as a storage portion, for example, it includes a chamber; and; the flange portion is omitted, for example, the closing membrane is directly connected to the storage portion.
[0121] refer to Figure 4A and Figure 4B The closing membrane 56 closing the storage portion 58 is perforated by the penetrator 38 to form at least one inlet for injecting the conditioned fluid into the chamber 74, as will be discussed. The penetrator 38 may be arranged as a separate blade or as a single blade integrated with the syringe.
[0122] Further references Figure 4A and Figure 4B , the flange-like rim 60 comprises a code region (not represented) on the side facing the storage portion 58. The code region may comprise a code to be read / analyzed by the code reading system 18.
[0123] In the disclosed embodiment, the closing membrane 56 is additionally perforated by one of a plurality of needles (not represented) to form an outlet opening 40 for the prepared beverage to leave the capsule 6 .
[0124] [Preparation process]
[0125] refer to Figure 7 , illustrating a process for preparing a beverage / foodstuff from a precursor material:
[0126] Box 70 : The user supplies the container 6 to the machine 4 .
[0127] Box 72: The circuitry 16 (eg, the input unit 50 thereof) receives a user instruction to prepare a beverage / foodstuff from a precursor, and the circuitry 16 (eg, the processor 52) initiates the process.
[0128] Block 74: The circuit 16 controls the processing unit 14 to process the container (eg, in the first example of the container processing unit 20, the extraction unit 32 receives the capsule from the location ( Figure 4A )Move to the capsule extraction position ( Figure 4B )).
[0129] Depending on the beverage preparation machine, frames 72 and 74 may be interchanged.
[0130] Box 76: The circuit 16 performs the preparation process based on the preparation information read from the code on the container or stored on the memory by controlling the processing unit 14. In the first example of the processing unit, this includes: controlling the fluid conditioning system 22 to supply the fluid to the container processing unit 20 at the temperature, pressure and duration specified in the preparation information.
[0131] The circuit 16 then controls the container handling unit 20 to move from the capsule extraction portion through the capsule ejection position to eject the container 6 and back to the capsule receiving position. In some cases, ejection may be entirely mechanical.
[0132] In variant embodiments not shown: the above-mentioned frames may be executed in a different order, for example, frame 72 may be executed before frame 70; some frames may be omitted, for example, frame 70 may be omitted in the case of a machine storing capsule boxes.
[0133] At block 74, if Figure 7 As shown, the preparation process described previously can be achieved by placing the container 6 in the container holding portion 34 of the processing unit 14 of the machine 4. The container 6 can be penetrated by the penetrator 38 (at Figure 4A and Figure 4B ) is pierced to form an inlet. The piercer 38 comprises one or more (eg, three) perforating elements. The container 6 is then processed by the extraction unit 32.
[0134] As part of the preparation process, circuitry 16 may obtain additional preparation information from server system 8 and / or peripheral device 10 via computer network 12 using a communication interface (not illustrated) of the machine.
[0135] [Flange-like edge of container]
[0136] refer to Figure 8 to Figure 1 2, with Figure 6 The container arranged as a capsule 6 associated with the embodiment of comprises an annular flange-like rim 60 formed of a cellulose-based material, and more particularly of a wood pulp-based material (as defined previously).
[0137] In the proposed embodiment, the storage portion 58 (forming the cup-shaped body) is also formed from a wood pulp based material and is integral with an annular flange-like rim 60. Thus, the entire capsule 6 is made of a wood pulp based material.
[0138] As disclosed, a flange-like rim 60 extends outwardly from the cup-shaped body forming the storage portion 58 and connects the storage portion and the closing membrane. Figure 8 As shown, the flange-like rim 60 extends outwardly in a substantially horizontal direction to a width W of between 2 mm and 5 mm.
[0139] As already presented, the flange-like rim 60 comprises a first portion 61 and a second portion 62 and an annular force ring 63 .
[0140] refer to Figure 4A and Figure 4B , a code zone (not presented) is located on a first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60. The first portion 61 is presented as a flat portion. Due to the position of the image capture unit 46 (as part of the code reading system 18 of the extraction unit 32), the code zone is located on a lower surface 71 of the first portion 61. The lower surface 71 faces the storage portion 58 and thus the image capture unit 46. When the capsule is mounted in a beverage preparation machine, the lower surface of the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60 contacts the holding portion 34 of the beverage preparation machine when the closing member 26 of the beverage preparation machine is closed.
[0141] An annular force ring 63 protrudes to the outside of the capsule from the flange-like rim 60. Thus, the capsule 6 is circumferentially surrounded by the annular force ring 63 protruding to the outside of the capsule 6.
[0142] The capsule 6, including the outwardly protruding force ring 63, comprises an outer diameter OD, which is preferably between 50 mm and 70 mm. In a preferred example, the outer diameter OD is between 52 mm and 61 mm.
[0143] An annular force ring 63 further extends upwardly from the flange-like rim 60 and may be designed to engage with the preparation machine 4. Fig. 9 The overall depth D of the presented capsules can vary between 18 mm and 40 mm.
[0144] In more detail and as already mentioned, the annular force ring 63 may constitute an engagement member which may be designed to be engaged by the extraction unit 32 of the preparation machine 4, more precisely by a dedicated pressing surface (not represented) of the closing member 36 of the extraction unit when the capsule is positioned in the receptacle holding portion 34. In some particular machines, it will not be the annular force ring 63 but another portion of the flange-like rim 60, for example the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60, that will interact with the extraction unit.
[0145] The annular force ring 63, together with the storage portion 58 and as part of the flange-like rim 60, is made of a cellulose pulp based material.
[0146] like Fig. 9 As shown, the annular force ring 63 is substantially S-shaped when viewed in transverse section. It extends mainly in a direction opposite to the storage portion and beyond the plane P of the flat section 61 containing the edge.
[0147] refer to Figure 8 and Fig. 9 , the side wall 76 includes a shoulder 120 that is arranged to engage the flange-like rim portion 60. The shoulder 120 extends from the inner edge 66 of the flange-like rim 60 toward a rim 122 of the side wall 76 in the depth direction 100 and defines a tapered surface having a radial extent that decreases from the flange portion 60 to the rim 122. The tapering can facilitate easier positioning of the container 6 in the container holding portion 34. The storage portions 58 can also be easily undone when stacked on each other during production and / or storage before being filled.
[0148] As previously mentioned, the first portion 61, the second portion 62 and the annular force ring 63 are segments of the flange-like rim and are integral with the flange-like rim 60. In addition, the flange-like rim comprising the first portion, the second portion and the annular force ring is integral with the cup-shaped body. In the proposed embodiment, the capsule 6 is made of a cellulose-based material, preferably a compressed / calendered, hot or cold wood-based material.
[0149] In the capsule 6, the density of the wood-based material of the flange-like rim 60 comprising the annular force ring is between 150 gsm and 500 gsm. However, the density of the material may vary for different elements of the flange-like rim 60, depending on the manufacturing process.
[0150] Combined by Fig. 9 The different elements of the flange-like rim 60, including the first portion 61, the second portion 62 and the annular force ring 63, may have substantially the same thickness. The thickness is between 40 microns and 500 microns.
[0151] However, in order to ensure an optimal and efficient interaction between the capsule 6 and the beverage preparation machine 4, it is conceivable to have different thicknesses for different elements of the flange-like rim 60. It is proposed that at least a first portion of the flange-like rim has a thickness lower than 240 micrometers.
[0152] [Container with lining and / or coating]
[0153] like Fig.10 and Fig.11As presented, the proposed capsule 6 also integrates a lining 90 and / or a coating 91 which is applied on the interior of the storage portion 58 .
[0154] like Fig.10 As shown, the bladder 6 comprises a liner 90 applied to the inner wall of the bladder.
[0155] exist Fig.10 In the embodiment of the present invention, a liner 90 extends in the storage portion 58 and partly over the flange-like rim 60. The liner 90 here covers only the second portion 62 of the flange-like rim 60, and the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim and the annular force ring 63 are not covered by the liner 90. The closing membrane 56 is fixed to the liner 90 at the location of the second portion 62 of the flange-like rim 60 and closes the opening portion of the capsule 6. Due to this assembly, the thickness of the portion interacting with the beverage preparation machine is limited.
[0156] In this case, the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60 has a total thickness lower than 240 micrometers, which corresponds to the sole thickness of the slurry of the capsule.
[0157] The liner 90 may be applied inside the capsule, for example using a lamination process or a thermoforming process using a plunger or compressed air. Other alternatives may be available and known to those skilled in the art.
[0158] In an alternative not represented, the liner 90 is applied over the entire surface of the capsule, including the annular force ring 63 of the flange-like rim 60 and the first portion 61 .
[0159] In order to obtain a maximum thickness of 240 micrometers at the level of the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim, it is conceivable to compress the capsule 6 in an additional step at the level of the first portion 61. This additional compression is described in further detail later in the description.
[0160] In the proposed embodiment the liner is biodegradable, preferably compostable, thereby ensuring that the capsule once filled and sealed is fully biodegradable / compostable after extraction in a beverage preparation machine. The liner structure will be briefly described, however its multi-layer structure will not be presented.
[0161] For example, the liner 90 is preferably biodegradable and may include a laminated multi-layer structure. As noted, the liner 90 provides an oxygen barrier and ensures that the beverage ingredients / precursors are stored under conditions that prevent oxidation thereof.
[0162] Laminated multilayer structures may include:
[0163] - an inner cover layer comprising an amount of a biodegradable aliphatic polyester;
[0164] - a first intermediate layer of biodegradable material, the first intermediate layer being used to connect and / or seal adjacent layers;
[0165] - a functional layer comprising a vinyl alcohol polymer;
[0166] - a second intermediate layer of biodegradable material, the second intermediate layer being used to connect and / or seal adjacent layers; and
[0167] - an outer cover layer comprising an amount of a biodegradable aliphatic polyester and wherein the food packaging unit is a compostable food packaging unit.
[0168] The inner and outer covering layers include a certain amount of biodegradable aliphatic polyesters, such as PBS, PHB, PHA, PCL, PLA, PGA, PHBH and PHBV. The inner and outer covering layers may also include a biodegradable material composition, such as a combination of starch and one of the above-mentioned biodegradable aliphatic polyesters (such as PBS and / or PLA). This improves the surface properties of the laminated multilayer, and the capsules arranged therein. This includes the so-called wipeability of the capsule. Wipeability relates to the possibility of removing stains from the surface and reducing or even preventing penetration into the material. In addition, it can provide more possibilities for promoting the compostable effect of the capsule. The surface properties also relate to grease / oil resistance, so that, for example, the (chemical properties) of the capsule can be maintained during its use. In addition, the penetration of oil from beverage ingredients / precursors (such as coffee) into the capsule can be reduced. In addition, the water barrier properties can be improved to reduce water penetration into the packaging unit, and thereby reduce wrinkle problems, such as during extraction.
[0169] In addition, the laminated multilayer includes a functional core layer, which includes a biodegradable and compostable vinyl alcohol polymer. The functional layer contributes to the multilayer properties, such as acting as a gas barrier. For example, the functional layer can provide an effective O2 barrier. This improves the shelf life of the food product in the packaging unit.
[0170] Vinyl alcohol polymers may include highly amorphous vinyl alcohol polymers, such as HAVOH and / or butanediol vinyl alcohol copolymers (B VOF1). Such polymers or polymer mixtures also provide effective barriers, particularly gas barriers, and more particularly oxygen barriers. Such barriers can be effectively used to further improve the shelf life of beverage ingredients / precursors. Experiments have shown improved oxygen barriers. As an important advantage, vinyl alcohol polymers are moldable and extrudable. The example of BVOH is G-polymer.
[0171] The inner and outer covering layers are separated from the central functional layer by an intermediate layer, which may also be referred to as a bonding layer. Such an intermediate layer is essentially a biodegradable material and connects and / or seals its adjacent layers. Preferably, the intermediate layer improves or at least helps to maintain the desired properties of the central functional layer, such as acting as a gas barrier. For example, the intermediate layer seals the central functional layer from liquid penetration to maintain the gas barrier properties of the functional layer.
[0172] Ideally, the multi-layer structure is contemplated to be compostable / biodegradable as an overall structure, wherein each of the layers itself may be compostable / biodegradable. It should be understood that additional individual layers may be provided in the laminated multilayer, providing 7, 9 or 11 layers of material, improving the overall properties of the laminated multilayer, for example including a grease barrier and an odor barrier.
[0173] The thickness of the liner can vary from 50 microns to 150 microns depending on the liner structure.
[0174] Again, due to the proposed structure, in which the extension of the lining 90 stops between the second portion 62 and the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim, the thickness of the capsule 6 at the location of the annular force ring 63 of the flange-like rim and the first portion 61 is limited to the thickness of the slurry, i.e. about 150 to 250 microns. This thickness range is very suitable for interaction with a beverage preparation machine, and in particular very suitable for allowing an effective seal between the capsule and the capsule cage (formed by the capsule holder 34 and the closing member 36) of the beverage preparation machine.
[0175] In order to further improve the capsule and avoid it sticking in the beverage machine after extraction, it is conceivable to apply a low thickness (less than 30 microns) coating (not presented). This coating can help the slurry structure of the flange-like rim (annular force ring 63 and first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60) to improve the waterproof properties when the capsule flange-like rim comes into contact with water during extraction of the capsule.
[0176] As in Fig.10 As can also be seen in the figure, the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60 comprises a coding element 19 in the form of a code. The code 19 is located on the lower surface 71 of the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60, ie facing the storage portion 58.
[0177] The code 19 may be of any type known in the art and may be applied using any known technique.
[0178] For example, the code 19 may be in the form of a barcode, a circular stripe code, an OID code, a magnetic code or any other suitable code.
[0179] The code may be applied by marking, pad printing, laser engraving, die marking or any other suitable process.
[0180] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, in which the first portion 61 and the second portion 62 are flat parallel portions, the code 19 may also be positioned on the second portion 62 of the flange-like rim, depending on the position of the code reading system 18 in the beverage preparation machine, since the image capture unit 46 of the code reading system 18 should be able to read the code 19.
[0181] exist Fig.11 In the capsules presented, the capsule 6 does not include a liner (e.g. Fig.10 ), but the coating 91 is applied on the inner surface of the capsule. The coating 91 may extend over the entire inner surface of the capsule, including the flange-like rim portion 60. The coating then stops at the outer edge 67 of the flange-like rim portion 60 and completely covers the entire inner surface of the capsule.
[0182] Since the thickness of the coating 91 (ranging from 2 microns to 50 microns) is less than the thickness of the liner, the coating 91 can be applied to the entire inner wall surface of the capsule (including the flange-like rim portion 61). The closing membrane 56 is then sealed to the second portion 62 of the flange-like rim 60 (e.g., in combination with the closure membrane 56). Fig.10 presented).
[0183] In this configuration, the thickness of the capsule 6 at the location of the annular force ring 63 and the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim is the sum of the thickness of the slurry and the thickness of the coating. By appropriately selecting the slurry and coating characteristics, the total thickness of the capsule at the location of the first portion of the flange-like rim can be maintained in the range of about 150 microns to 250 microns.
[0184] The coating may consist of one or more coatings of BVOH, PVOH, or any other material that provides a desired barrier (eg, an oxygen barrier or a water barrier).
[0185] The coating may be applied using spraying, laminating, dipping, and any suitable application process.
[0186] In summary, possible thickness ranges for the different elements of the capsule 6 are presented below:
[0187] element Thickness range Slurry (storage portion 58 integral with flange-like rim 60) 150 microns to 250 microns Lining 90 50 microns to 150 microns Closure film 56 10 microns to 200 microns Coating 91 2 microns to 50 microns
[0188] From the cross-sectional view, FIG. 12A to FIG. 12D Different arrangements of the flange-like rim portion 60 are proposed, and more particularly arrangements which can be combined with Fig.10 and Fig.11 Different arrangements of the first part 61 and the part 62 of the flange-like rim are used. These arrangements can be integrated in the previously described capsule 6. The flange-like rim 60 and in particular the annular ring 63 are not presented in detail.
[0189] exist Fig. 12A In the embodiment, the first portion 61 and the second portion 62 of the flange-like rim 60 are parallel to each other and connected together by a substantially vertical portion.
[0190] exist Fig. 12B and Fig. 12C In the embodiment, the first portion 61 and the second portion 62 of the flange-like rim 60 are inclined relative to each other at an angle α. The absolute value of the angle α can vary between 0.1° and 88.5°. Fig. 12B In the embodiment, the first portion 61 and the second portion 62 are arranged at an angle of -α°. Fig. 12C In the embodiment, the first portion 61 and the second portion 62 are arranged tilted according to an angle of +α°.
[0191] In this embodiment, the upper surface corresponding to the second portion 62 (opposite the lower surface 72 ) is textured to improve the seal with the lower surface 55 of the closure membrane 56 .
[0192] In addition, it should be mentioned that the width of both the first portion 61 and the second portion 62 of the flange-like rim can vary. For example, the width w2 of the second portion 62 (e.g. Fig. 12A can be between 0.2 mm and 3 mm.
[0193] Likewise, the depth d between the first portion 61 and the second portion 62 of the flange-like rim may be between 0.1 mm and 5 mm.
[0194] [Container flange rim function]
[0195] As disclosed in conjunction with the presented figures, it is conceivable to extract the capsule 6 using a centrifugal extraction process, as disclosed, for example, in EP 2155019 A1, which is incorporated herein by reference. Vertuo During such an extraction process, the flange-like rim 60 of the capsule 6, and more specifically its outer extension (annular force ring 62), can interact with the preparation machine and can function as a flow restriction or flow restriction valve. This is disclosed in EP2667757 A1, which is incorporated herein by reference.
[0196] In detail, the force ring 63 extending upwards from the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60 is designed to form a part of a valve member for selectively blocking and / or limiting the flow of centrifuged liquid out of the capsule 6 during the extraction process.
[0197] More specifically, the force ring 63 preferably extends upwards from a plane containing the first portion 61 to a depth (defined as the upward extension distance) between 0.5 mm and 2.5 mm in order to adapt the back pressure applied by a dedicated pressing surface of a beverage production device for use in combination with the present capsule.
[0198] In a preferred embodiment, the depth of the force ring 63 of the capsule 6 is preferably between 1 mm and 1.8 mm high so as to apply a high back pressure to the capsule 6 which will account for high crema quality and quantity but also for a suitable flow rate.
[0199] The envisaged annular force ring 63 provides a rigid engagement portion when engaged by a dedicated pressing surface (not presented) of the closure member 36 of the extraction unit 32 of the beverage preparation machine 4, thereby forming a stable valve member.
[0200] Thus, as disclosed, the flange-like rim portion 60 has several functions: it has a valve, a centering function, an anti-deformation function and, when holding a code, an identification member support function.
[0201] [Compression of flange-like edges]
[0202] Further references Figure 8 to Figure 1 2. The container arranged as a capsule 6 associated with the presented embodiment comprises an annular flange-like rim 60 formed of a cellulose-based material, and more particularly of a wood pulp-based material (as defined previously).
[0203] In addition to the flange-like rim previously described, the flange-like rim 60 or at least a portion thereof (e.g., the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60) may be compressed (using a hot or cold process), integrated with a lining and / or coating, thereby providing even better interaction with the manufacturing machine.
[0204] Furthermore, in the case where the capsule integrates a code, it provides an improved surface for carrying said code (not represented) on the lower surface 71 of the first portion 61 of the flange-like rim 60 .
[0205] Specifically, when formed from a wood pulp-based material, a pressing process with or without heating may be applied to reduce the thickness of the flange-like rim 60 at specific locations to ensure compatibility with existing machinery. The pressing process (with an optional heating process) may also provide a more consistent surface to serve as a substrate for the code, which may improve code reading reliability. In such an example, the preparation process may include a step of reading the code to extract preparation information therefrom. The step of reading the code may include rotating the code relative to the code reader, for example, by rotating the container about the axis of rotation 106. The container may implement such a flange-like rim portion.
[0206] The pressing process applies a pressure between 1x105Pa and 1x107Pa on the flat section of the flange-like rim to compress the wood pulp-based material. The pressing process can optionally be completed using a heating process at a temperature between 50°C and 300°C. It should be understood that any suitable pressure and temperature combination can be selected. The pressing force can be applied for 5 seconds to 60 seconds.
[0207] During the proposed pressing process, the code may be applied by engraving.
[0208] In variant embodiments, alternative treatments are performed, including applying a coating; and scoring to reduce the material cross-section. As used herein, the term "applying a coating" may refer to applying a coating to a wood pulp-based material to close the pores / voids between fibers and / or act as a barrier. This may provide reduced water absorption, which may be advantageous for the reasons given previously.
[0209] [Groups of containers of different sizes]
[0210] refer to Fig.13A and Fig. 13B , presenting a group of capsules 6a, 6b. Each capsule 6a, 6b in the group is similar to the capsule 6 disclosed in connection with the previous figures and comprises: a closing membrane 56; a cup-shaped body designed as a storage portion 58; and an annular flange-like rim 60, as previously disclosed. The capsules within the group may have similar or different sizes, as described below.
[0211] The closing membrane 56 is connected to the flange-like rim portion 60 to form a seal of the storage portion 58 .
[0212] The cup-shaped body of the respective capsule 6a, 6b has a single raised storage portion of variable depth (Da, Db respectively), as can be seen in the figure.
[0213] The flange-like rim 60 of the capsules 6a, 6b in the group has the same size for all capsules in the group to fit into the container holding part 34 of the machine 4 previously disclosed. Figure 6 and Figure 8 to Figure 1 2, the flange-like rim 60 has the same arrangement for each capsule 6a, 6b of the set and will be removed in a similar manner by the extraction unit 32 (e.g. Figure 4A and Figure 4B The container retaining portion 34 and closure member 36 are presented to engage and will provide the same valve function (as previously disclosed in the specification).
[0214] The capsules 6a, 6b in the set comprise different volumes with the same insertion diameter ID. The insertion diameter ID is determined at the intersection line between the lower surface 72 of the flange-like rim and the storage portion 58 at the location of the distal edge 82.
[0215] Fig.13A The capsule is a large-volume capsule, and Fig. 13B The capsules of the group show the smaller volume capsules. The volume difference between the small capsules and the large capsules is obtained by the varying depths Da, Db of the storage portion 58 (cup-shaped body) of the capsules in the group. Specifically, the larger capsule 6a ( Fig.13A ) has a greater depth than the storage portion 58 of the smaller capsule 6b ( Fig. 13B )’s storage portion.
[0216] Furthermore, different containers of a set of containers may also comprise annular force rings having different upward extension distances (hal, ha2, ha3) from said plane (P), the upward extension distances being different for different containers depending on the type of extraction desired.
[0217] The amount of precursor material contained in a small capsule (such as capsule 6b) is less than that contained in the large capsule 6a. Taking the precursor material as coffee as an example, the small capsule 6b is generally intended to be used to deliver a small cup of coffee between 10mL and 60mL with a ground coffee amount between 4g and 8g.
[0218] The large capsule 6a is intended for delivering a large cup of coffee between 200 mL and 500 mL, with a coffee quantity between 8 and 30 grams.
[0219] A medium-sized capsule (not presented) may be defined for delivering a medium cup of coffee between 60 mL and 120 mL with a coffee quantity between 6 and 15 grams. Additional medium-sized capsules may be further defined. Examples of suitable capsule sets are disclosed in WO 2011 / 069830 A1.
[0220] In the present disclosure, a set of two capsules has been described in detail, however, the set of capsules may be formed of more than two capsules of different sizes.
[0221] According to the present disclosure, a system has been proposed, the system comprising said container or a set of containers to be used in a beverage preparation machine.
