AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

In a display device that provides virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR), due to the narrowing of the spacing occupied by the pixel circuit, there is a limitation on the number of transistors constituting the pixel circuit and the signal applied to the pixel circuit.

Method used

A pixel circuit including light emitting elements, multiple types of transistors (such as driving transistors, data writing transistors, compensation transistors, initialization transistors and light emitting control transistors) and storage capacitors are designed. These transistors form a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) structure through specific circuit connections and operation methods to reduce the area of the pixel circuit and compensate the threshold voltage of the driving transistor by means of diode connections of the compensation transistor.

Benefits of technology

By optimizing the type and connection method of transistors, a high-density layout of the pixel circuit is realized, the area of the pixel circuit is reduced, and leakage current is effectively minimized, and light emission caused by leakage current in non-emission period is prevented.

Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a pixel circuit, and more particularly, to a pixel circuit having a high pixel per inch (PPI) and a display device including the pixel circuit. Background Art

[0002] Generally, a display device may include a display panel and a display panel driver. The display panel may include a gate line, a data line, an emission line, and a pixel circuit. The display panel driver may include a gate driver for providing a gate signal to the gate line, a data driver for providing a data voltage to the data line, an emission driver for providing an emission signal to the emission line, and a drive controller for controlling the gate driver, the data driver, and the emission driver.

[0003] Recently, display devices that provide virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) have gained attention. In this case, since the pitch occupied by the pixel circuit becomes narrower, there may be restrictions on the number of transistors constituting the pixel circuit and the signal applied to the pixel circuit. Summary of the invention

[0004] Embodiments of the present invention provide pixel circuits for low area and high PPI.

[0006] In an embodiment, the data writing transistor is an N-type transistor, and the first light emission control transistor may be a P-type transistor.

[0007] In an embodiment, the data write transistor and the first light emission control transistor may form a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS).

[0008] In an embodiment, the pixel circuit may further include: a second light emission control transistor including a gate electrode receiving the data write gate signal, a first electrode connected to the third node, and a second electrode connected to the anode electrode.

[0009] In an embodiment, the compensation transistor may be an N-type transistor, and the second light emission control transistor may be a P-type transistor.

[0010] In an embodiment, the compensation transistor and the second light emission control transistor may form a CMOS.

[0011] In an embodiment, in a first period, the initialization gate signal and the data write gate signal may have a high voltage level.

[0012] In an embodiment, in the first period, the initialization transistor may provide the initialization voltage to the first node, and the initialization transistor and the compensation transistor may provide the initialization voltage to the third node.

[0013] In an embodiment, in a second period after the first period, the initialization gate signal may have a low voltage level, and the data write gate signal may have the high voltage level.

[0014] In an embodiment, in the second period, the data voltage may be provided to the gate electrode of the driving transistor through the data write transistor, the driving transistor, and the compensation transistor.

[0015] In an embodiment, in the second period, when the compensation transistor is turned on, the compensation transistor may be diode-connected to the driving transistor.

[0016] In an embodiment, in a third period after the second period, the initialization gate signal may have the low voltage level, and the data write gate signal may have a low voltage level.

[0017] In an embodiment, in the third period, the driving current of the driving transistor may flow to the light emitting element.

[0018] According to the pixel circuit, since some transistors included in the pixel circuit are N-type transistors, the leakage current of the pixel circuit can be minimized. Since the data write transistor and the first light emission control transistor form a CMOS, the area of the pixel circuit can be reduced. Since the compensation transistor and the second light emission control transistor form a CMOS, the area of the pixel circuit can be reduced. Since the compensation transistor is connected to the drive transistor in a diode manner, the threshold voltage of the drive transistor can be compensated. Since the second light emission control transistor is turned off in a non-emission period other than the emission period, the light emission of the light emitting element caused by the leakage current flowing into the light emitting element can be prevented. [0060] In an embodiment, the driving transistor T1 may include a gate electrode connected to the first node N1 , a first electrode connected to the second node N2 , and a second electrode connected to the third node N3 .

[0061] In an embodiment, the data write transistor T2 may include a gate electrode receiving the data write gate signal GW, a first electrode connected to the data line DL providing the data voltage VDATA, and a second electrode connected to the second node N2.

[0062] In an embodiment, the compensation transistor T3 may include a gate electrode receiving the data write gate signal GW, a first electrode connected to the third node N3 , and a second electrode connected to the first node N1 .

[0063] In an embodiment, the initialization transistor T4 may include a gate electrode receiving the initialization gate signal GI, a first electrode receiving the initialization voltage VINT, and a second electrode connected to the first node N1.

[0067] In an embodiment, more leakage current may occur in a P-type transistor than in an N-type transistor. Therefore, some transistors included in the pixel circuit P may be N-type transistors. In an embodiment, the data write transistor T2 may be an N-type transistor, and the initialization transistor T4 may be a P-type transistor. In an embodiment, the drive transistor T1 and the compensation transistor T3 may be P-type transistors, and the first light emission control transistor T5 may be an N-type transistor. In an embodiment, the data write transistor T2 may be an N-type transistor, and the first light emission control transistor T5 may be a P-type transistor. In an embodiment, the data write transistor T2 and the first light emission control transistor T5 may form a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS). The present disclosure is not limited thereto. Therefore, the number of gate signals and the number of lines transmitting gate signals may be reduced, and therefore, the area of the pixel circuit P may be reduced. For example, when the signal applied to the gate electrode of the P-type transistor has a low voltage level, the P-type transistor may be turned on. The first node N1 and the third node N3 can be initialized to the initialization voltage VINT.

[0074] Figure 6 is a diagram showing the operation in the second cycle according to an embodiment Figure 2 A timing diagram of an example of a pixel circuit. Figure 7 is a diagram showing the operation in the second cycle according to an embodiment Figure 2 A circuit diagram of an example of a pixel circuit.

[0075] In the examples and with reference to Figures 1 to 7 , in the second period P2, the data writing transistor T2 and the compensation transistor T3 may be turned on, and the initialization transistor T4, the first light emission control transistor T5, and the second light emission control transistor T6 may be turned off.

[0076] In an embodiment, when the data write transistor T2 and the compensation transistor T3 are turned on, the data voltage VDATA may be provided to the first node N1 (ie, the gate electrode of the driving transistor T1 ) through the data write transistor T2 , the driving transistor T1 , and the compensation transistor T3 .

[0077] In an embodiment, when the compensation transistor T3 is turned on, the compensation transistor T3 may be connected to the driving transistor T1 in a diode manner. Therefore, the threshold voltage of the driving transistor T1 may be compensated.

[0078] Meanwhile, in the embodiment, since the second light emission control transistor T6 is turned off in the first period P1 and the second period P2, the light emission of the light emitting element EE due to the leakage current flowing into the light emitting element EE can be prevented.

[0079] Figure 8 is a diagram showing the operation in the third cycle according to an embodiment Figure 2 A timing diagram of an example of a pixel circuit. Fig. 9 is a diagram showing the operation in the third cycle according to an embodiment Figure 2 A circuit diagram of an example of a pixel circuit.

[0080] refer to Figures 1 to 9 , in the third period P3, the first light emission control transistor T5 and the second light emission control transistor T6 may be turned on, and the data writing transistor T2, the compensation transistor T3, and the initialization transistor T4 may be turned off.

[0081] In an embodiment, the voltage of the first node N1 may be determined based on the data voltage VDATA, the driving current of the driving transistor T1 may be determined based on the voltage of the first node N1, and the driving transistor T1 may provide the driving current to the light emitting element EE. The light emitting element EE may emit light with brightness corresponding to the driving current.

[0082] In an embodiment, since some transistors included in the pixel circuit P are N-type transistors, the leakage current of the pixel circuit P can be minimized. Since the data writing transistor T2 and the first light emission control transistor T5 form a CMOS, the area of the pixel circuit P can be reduced. Since the compensation transistor T3 and the second light emission control transistor T6 form a CMOS, the area of the pixel circuit P can be reduced. Since the compensation transistor T3 is connected to the driving transistor T1 in a diode manner, the threshold voltage of the driving transistor T1 can be compensated. Since the second light emission control transistor T6 is turned off in a non-emission period other than the emission period, the light emission of the light emitting element EE caused by the leakage current flowing into the light emitting element EE can be prevented.
