Description

Background Art

[0001] Disinfection and sterilization liquid are used to clean various surfaces in various environments (comprising hospitals, medical offices, families, commercial buildings, restaurants and other public facilities). Disinfection and sterilization liquid compositions usually contain one or more activating agents with antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and / or antiparasitic activity. These liquid compositions can be applied on the surface by spraying or can be transferred to the surface from cleaning products (for example, substrate, such as wipes, cloth, sponges, etc.). However, since disinfection and sterilization liquid are usually provided in the form of transparent colorless solution, the user cannot easily determine whether the whole surface has been contacted with disinfection and / or sterilization composition by visual inspection. Simply adding conventional colorants to the liquid is not an acceptable solution, because the user cannot tolerate the permanent coloring of the clean surface.

[0002] The user also cannot determine whether the concentration of the disinfecting and / or sanitizing composition and the duration of contact with the surface are sufficient to ensure that the active agent has eliminated any target pathogens. In addition, if too much liquid is lost due to evaporation, the cleaning product will lose effectiveness over time. If there is not enough liquid, the composition cannot be effectively transferred from the substrate to the target surface. It is often difficult for the user to determine how much liquid has been lost from the product, and therefore it is often difficult to determine whether a particular cleaning product is still effective in eliminating target pathogens.

[0003] Therefore, there is a need for disinfecting and sterilizing compositions that can reliably indicate whether a surface has been contacted with a disinfecting and sterilizing liquid composition. There is also a need for disinfecting and sterilizing liquid compositions that can reliably indicate the length of time the composition has been in contact with a surface. There is also a need for improved cleaning products that can reliably indicate whether the liquid retained in the cleaning product is sufficient to ensure proper transfer of the disinfecting and sterilizing composition to a surface.

[0004] In accordance with the purposes of the disclosed materials and methods, as embodied and broadly described herein, in one aspect, the disclosed subject matter relates to compounds, compositions, and methods of making and using the compounds and compositions.

[0005] Additional advantages will be explained in part in the subsequent description and in part understood from the description, or can be learned by practicing the aspects described below. The advantages described below will be realized and obtained by means of the elements and combinations specifically pointed out in the appended claims. It should be understood that the above general description and the following detailed description are merely exemplary and illustrative, and not restrictive.

[0006] The details of one or more embodiments are set forth in the description below. Other features, objects, and advantages will be apparent from the description and claims. Summary of the invention

[0007] Disclosed herein is a liquid composition comprising a residence time indicator system. The composition can be used to disinfect and / or sterilize a variety of surfaces. The indicator system comprises one or more cyanine dyes and one or more organic acids. The composition is in a colored state (i.e., has a certain absorption in the visible spectrum) when wetted, and is converted to a substantially colorless state when applied to a surface and most of the composition is evaporated. For example, in some embodiments, when the composition is applied to a surface and 95% of the composition is evaporated, the composition is converted to a substantially colorless state.

[0008] The liquid disinfecting and / or sterilizing composition also comprises one or more active ingredients, for example, antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal active ingredients, or active ingredients with a combination of these capabilities. The composition also comprises a solvent or a solvent mixture. The composition optionally comprises other chemicals, such as fragrances and viscosity modifiers.

[0009] Also disclosed herein are articles loaded with a liquid composition. When the liquid composition remains substantially wet, the composition on the article has a color. When the solvent in the composition is substantially evaporated, the composition on the article becomes colorless.

The results described in Examples 1-11 were the same as those for 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-cyanine iodide and 1,1'-dibutyl-4,4'-cyanine iodide. Therefore, the term "cyanine dye" in Examples 1-11 means "1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-cyanine iodide or 1,1'-dibutyl-4,4'-cyanine iodide".

[0107] Example 1: Prepare an ethanol solution containing 0.06 mg / ml cyanine dye, 0.625 mg / ml citric acid and 5% benzalkonium chloride. The color of the solution is blue.

[0108] Example 2: When the blue solution in Example 1 is spread on a white ceramic substrate or cardboard, the blue color disappears after all the ethanol evaporates.

[0109] Example 3: The blue solution in Example 1 was used to soak a substrate, and the loading of the solution was 300% of the total weight of the substrate (e.g., hydroentangled or hydrowoven material). The soaked substrate showed a blue color. When the substrate was dried in a fume hood, the substrate became colorless.

[0110] Example 4: Use the pre-saturated matrix from Example 3 to wipe a white ceramic plate or cardboard. Some liquid transfers to the surface, forming a thin layer of blue solution. The blue color disappears after about 60 seconds.

[0111] Example 5: Prepare an ethanol solution containing 0.06 mg / ml cyanine dye, 2.5 mg / ml citric acid and 5% benzalkonium chloride. The color of the solution is blue.

[0112] Example 6: The blue solution in Example 5 was used to soak a substrate, and the loading of the solution was 300% of the total weight of the substrate (e.g., hydroentangled or hydrowoven material). The soaked substrate showed a blue color. When the substrate was dried in a fume hood, the substrate became colorless.

[0113] Example 7: Use the pre-saturated matrix from Example 5 to wipe a white ceramic plate or cardboard. Some liquid transfers to the surface, forming a thin layer of blue solution. The blue color disappears after about 30 seconds.

[0114] Example 8: A butanol solution containing 0.06 mg / ml cyanine dye, 0.625 mg / ml citric acid and 5% benzalkonium chloride was prepared. The color of the solution was blue.

[0115] Example 9: The blue solution in Example 8 was used to soak a substrate, and the loading of the solution was 300% of the total weight of the substrate (e.g., hydroentangled or hydrowoven material). The soaked substrate showed a blue color. When the substrate was dried in a fume hood, the substrate became colorless.

[0116] Example 10: Use the pre-saturated matrix from Example 9 to wipe a white ceramic plate or cardboard. Some liquid transfers to the surface, forming a thin layer of blue solution. The blue color disappears after about 120 seconds.

[0117] Example 11: Examples 1 to 10 were repeated, but benzalkonium chloride was replaced by chlorhexidine digluconate, citric acid was replaced by tartaric acid, and ethanol or butanol was replaced by a mixed solvent of ethanol / water or isopropanol / water. The blue color of the solution disappeared when the solution was dried on a substrate or applied to a surface. The color change time would vary depending on the amount and type of acid and the type of solvent.
