Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention generally relates to a pry bar attachment and more particularly to a pry bar attachment adapted to provide a fulcrum at any point on the axis of the pry bar. Background Art
[0002] A lever is a device commonly used to provide a mechanical advantage when lifting or moving a load. A first force is applied to one end of the lever, which pivots at the fulcrum, providing a second force on the load at the other end of the lever. The first force, the load, and the location of the fulcrum will determine the type of lever and the amount of mechanical advantage of the device.
[0003] A common type of lever is a pry bar. A pry bar generally includes a prying portion and a pry bar shaft that acts as a lever. Typically, the prying portion is placed in a desired position under load, and the pry bar pivots about a fulcrum along the pry bar shaft that contacts a grounded surface. However, during use of the pry bar, the pry bar may slip on the grounded surface (the surface on which the pry bar pivots or pushes), or even crush or damage the grounded surface. The grounded surface is typically a debris material. For example, a piece of debris or scrap material may be placed under the pry bar shaft to form a new fulcrum at a different location on the pry bar shaft.
[0004] Typically, a pry bar has a bend between the prying portion and the pry bar axis to define a fulcrum, and the pry bar pivots on the bend, but sometimes it is desirable to pivot the pry bar about another location of the pry bar axis. Summary of the invention
[0005] The present invention generally relates to an attachment for a pry bar. The attachment can prevent slippage between a grounded surface and the pry bar. The attachment can also prevent crushing or damaging the grounded surface because the attachment can provide a larger surface area to apply force to the grounded surface than a portion of the pry bar. The attachment can also provide another fulcrum for the pry bar at a desired location on the pry bar shaft of the pry bar.
[0006] In one embodiment, the present invention is generally directed to an accessory for a pry bar, the accessory comprising: a base having a bottom surface and an engagement surface opposite the bottom surface; opposing first and second sides extending upwardly from the base and forming a channel therebetween adapted to receive the pry bar; and a fastener coupling the first and second sides together and extending through the channel. The accessory may also include a first opening and a second opening in the respective first and second sides, and the fastener may be disposed in the first opening and the second opening.
[0007] In another embodiment, the present invention is generally directed to an attachment for a pry bar, the attachment comprising: a base having a bottom surface and an engagement surface opposite the bottom surface; opposing first and second sides extending upward from the base and forming a channel therebetween adapted to receive the pry bar; first and second recesses disposed in the respective first and second sides, wherein a first width is formed between the first and second sides at the first and second recesses, and a second width is formed between the first and second sides at the remainder of the channel, wherein the first width is greater than the second width; and a fastener coupling the first and second sides together and extending through the channel. The attachment may also include first and second openings in the respective first and second sides, and the fastener may be disposed in the first and second openings. [0018] Although the present invention admits of many different forms of implementation, embodiments of the present invention including preferred embodiments are shown in the drawings and will be described in detail herein, it should be understood that the disclosure should be considered as an example of the principles of the present invention, and is not intended to limit the broad aspects of the present invention to any one or more embodiments shown herein. As used herein, the term "present invention" is not intended to limit the scope of the claimed invention, but is used only for the purpose of explanation to discuss exemplary embodiments of the present invention.
[0019] The present invention generally relates to a pry bar attachment that includes a base having a bottom surface and an engagement surface, side members extending upwardly from the base on opposite sides of the engagement surface, and a channel formed between the side members adapted to receive a pry bar. The attachment of the present invention is intended for use with a typical pry bar. The attachment also includes a removable or permanent pin that connects the side members together. When the pin is removable, the pin can be inserted through the side member after the pry bar is received in the channel to retain the attachment on the pry bar and prevent the pry bar from falling or lifting from the attachment. The attachment is slidably adjustable along the pry bar axis of the pry bar and can be positioned at any desired position of the pry bar axis to define a fulcrum and position of the pry bar against a grounded surface.
[0020] The bottom surface is adapted to contact or rest on a grounded surface and provides a greater surface area than a typical fulcrum or shaft of a pry bar and reduces the likelihood of damaging the grounded surface. The bottom surface also reduces the risk of the accessory accidentally sliding when the pry bar is in use. The bottom surface may be a flat surface or a serrated surface to increase friction between the bottom surface and the grounded surface. Alternatively, the bottom surface may be an arcuate surface or other shaped surface suitable as a fulcrum surface against a grounded surface.
[0021] The engagement surface may include a protrusion on which the pry bar pivots. The protrusion may be an arcuate surface or a surface of other shapes suitable as a fulcrum surface for the pry bar. The engagement surface may also optionally include serrations or other devices to increase friction with the pry bar shaft. In other embodiments, the engagement surface may be a flat surface and may include serrations or other surface features or treatments to provide a surface suitable for gripping or increasing friction with the pry bar shaft. In another embodiment, each side member has a cutout or recess to form a channel portion having a larger width, which is suitable for receiving the prying portion of a typical pry bar. This allows the pry bar to be selectively positioned within the accessory, where the fulcrum formed by the accessory is closer to the prying portion.
[0022] See also Figures 1 to 5 , an exemplary accessory 100 of a typical pry bar 300 is shown and described. The accessory 100 includes a base 102 and opposing first and second sides 104, 106 extending upwardly from the base 102. A channel 108 is formed between the first and second sides 104, 106, and the channel 108 is adapted to slidably receive the exemplary pry bar 300. The base 102 includes a bottom surface 110 located at a bottom side of the base 102, and an engagement surface 112 between the first and second sides 104, 106, the engagement surface 112 being located at a top side of the base 102 and opposite the bottom side. The bottom surface 110 is adapted to contact or rest on a ground surface and provides a larger surface area defining a fulcrum than a conventional bend of a pry bar shaft 302 of a typical pry bar 300, and reduces the likelihood of damaging the ground surface due to the larger surface area of the bottom surface 110 contacting the ground surface. The bottom surface 110 also reduces the risk of the pry bar 300 with the attached accessory 100 slipping during use. For example, bottom surface 110 may be a flat surface or include friction enhancements, such as a serrated surface, to increase friction between bottom surface 110 and a ground-engaging surface during use. Although bottom surface 110 is described as being flat or serrated, other techniques and / or surface treatments may be used to provide a surface suitable for gripping or increasing friction between bottom surface 110 and a ground-engaging surface.
[0023] The engagement surface 112 may also include a protrusion that acts as a fulcrum surface for the pry bar 300 to pivot. In one embodiment, the engagement surface 112 may be an arcuate surface. Although the engagement surface 112 is depicted as being arcuate, the engagement surface 112 may also be any other shape suitable for providing a fulcrum surface that may act as a pry bar, including a flat surface. In addition, the engagement surface 112 may optionally include serrations or other surface features or treatments to provide a surface suitable for gripping the pry bar 300 or increasing friction with the pry bar 300. Although the accessory is described for use with a pry bar, the accessory is also suitable for use with other tools that may be used as general-purpose levers, such as sticks, rods, crowbars, pry bars, etc.
[0024] The first side 104 and the second side 106 extend substantially vertically upward from opposite sides of the base 104, forming a channel 108 between the first side 104 and the second side 106. For example, each of the first side 104 and the second side 106 may extend substantially perpendicularly or at a substantially 90 degree angle relative to the plane of the base 102. The base 102 and the first side 104 and the second side 106 may be a single unitary piece, or may be separate components connected together, for example, by fasteners, adhesives, etc.
[0025] As shown, each of the first side 104 and the second side 106 has a lower portion and an upper portion. The lower portion may have the same length as the base, and may be substantially rectangular in shape, while the upper portion may be triangular in shape. For example, the first side 104 includes a first lower portion 114 and a first upper portion 116, and the first upper portion 116 gradually narrows or angles toward the middle of the first side 104. Similarly, the second side 106 includes a second lower portion 118 and a second upper portion 120, and the second upper portion 120 gradually narrows or angles toward the middle of the second side 106. A removable or permanent fastener 122 may couple the first upper portion 116 and the second upper portion 120 together. For example, each of the first side 104 and the second side 106 may also include an aperture adapted to receive the fastener 122. For example, the first side 104 may include a first aperture 124 near the vertex portion of the first side 104 (or away from the top of the base 102, i.e., near the vertex portion of the first upper portion 116). Similarly, the second side 106 may include a second opening (not shown because it is covered by the fastener 122 ) near an apex portion of the second side 106 (or away from the top of the base 102 , ie, near an apex portion of the second upper portion 120 ).
[0026] The fastener 122 helps to retain the pry bar 300 in the channel 108 during use of the accessory 100, thereby improving user safety. The fastener 122 may include a handle 126 and a head 128. The handle 126 is arranged through the first and second openings, extending through the channel 108, while the head 128 abuts against one of the first side 104 and the second side 106. The size or diameter of the head 128 is generally larger than the first and second openings to prevent the fastener 122 from being pushed or inserted, or accidentally moved through the first and second openings.
[0027] In one embodiment, the fastener 122 can be a pin-type fastener that is removably inserted into the first opening and the second opening. The pin-type fastener can also include one or more positioning balls located in the handle 126 near one end of the fastener opposite to the head 128 to help keep the fastener in the first opening and the second opening. In other embodiments, the fastener 122 can be any other type of fastener that is removably inserted into the first opening and the second opening. For example, the fastener 122 can be a bolt or screw, a cotter pin, a clevis pin, a clip, a rope, etc. Alternatively, the fastener 122 can be non-removable, or it can be permanent. For example, the fastener 122 can be a pin whose opposite ends are welded or otherwise permanently connected to the first side 104 and the second side 106, respectively, and can removably or permanently hold the accessory 100 on the pry bar 300.
[0028] In order to slidably arrange the accessory 100 on the pry bar 300, the fastener 122 is removed from at least one of the first opening and the second opening to allow vertical access to the channel 108. After removing the fastener 122, the pry bar shaft 302 of the pry bar 300 can be arranged vertically in the channel 108. Then, the fastener 122 can be arranged in the first opening and the second opening, extending through the channel 108 to hold the accessory 100 on the pry bar 300. In one embodiment, the channel width of the channel 108 is greater than the width of the pry bar shaft 302 and less than the width of the prying portion 304 of the pry bar 300. This allows the accessory 100 to slide along the pry bar shaft 302, but prevents the prying portion 304 from moving horizontally through the channel 108. Therefore, the accessory 100 is vertically held by the fastener 122, the pry bar 300 does not fall, and is held horizontally due to the channel width. This also allows a user to couple accessory 100 to pry bar 300 and pick up or move the combined pry bar 300 and accessory 100 without accidentally dropping pry bar 300 from accessory 100 .
[0029] See also Figures 2 to 5 , showing the accessory 100 arranged on the pry bar 300 in a first position and a second position. Figures 2 to 3 In the example shown, the accessory 100 is selectively positioned along the pry bar axis 302 in an exemplary first position proximate to the prying portion 304. Figures 4 to 5 In, with Figure 2 and Figure 3 , the accessory 100 is selectively positioned along the pry bar axis 302 in an exemplary second position away from the prying portion 304, compared to the first position shown in . It should be appreciated that the slidability of the accessory 100 along the pry bar axis 302 enables a user to easily and selectively position and / or reposition the accessory 100 relative to the pry bar axis 302 to provide a desired fulcrum surface location for operating the pry bar 300.
[0030] See also Figures 6 to 8 , another embodiment of the claimed invention is shown and described. The accessory 200 is similar to the accessory 100. For example, the accessory 200 includes a base 202 and opposing first and second sides 204, 206 extending upward from the base 202. A channel 208 is also formed between the first and second sides 204, 206, and the channel 208 is adapted to receive the pry bar 300. The base 202 includes a bottom surface 210 located at the bottom side of the base 202, and an engagement surface 212 between the first and second sides 206, the engagement surface 212 being located at the top side of the base 202 and opposite the bottom side. The bottom surface 210 is adapted to contact or rest on a grounded surface and provides a larger surface area than the bend or pry bar shaft 302 of a typical pry bar 300 and reduces the likelihood of damaging the grounded surface. The bottom surface 210 also reduces the risk of the accessory 200 slipping when the pry bar 300 and the accessory 200 are used. The bottom surface 210 may be a flat surface or a friction enhancing surface, such as having a serrated surface, to increase the friction between the bottom surface 210 and the ground contact surface. Although the bottom surface 210 is described as being flat or serrated, other techniques and / or surface treatments may be used to provide a surface suitable for gripping or increasing the friction between the bottom surface 210 and the ground contact surface.
[0031] Engagement surface 212 may be flat, or may include a protrusion (similar to engagement surface 112 of accessory 100 described above) that acts as a fulcrum surface for pry bar 300 to pivot. For example, engagement surface 212 may be an arcuate surface, or any other shape including a flat surface suitable for providing a fulcrum surface that may act as a fulcrum surface for a pry bar (similar to engagement surface 112 of accessory 100 described above). Additionally, engagement surface 212 may optionally include serrations or other surface features or treatments to provide a surface suitable for gripping or increasing friction with pry bar 300.
[0032] The first side 204 and the second side 206 extend substantially vertically upward from opposite sides of the base 204, forming a channel 208 between the first side 204 and the second side 206. For example, each of the first side 204 and the second side 206 may extend substantially perpendicularly or at a substantially 90 degree angle relative to the plane of the base 202. The base 202 and the first side 204 and the second side 206 may be a single unitary piece, or may be separate components connected together, for example, by fasteners, adhesives, etc.
[0033] As shown, each of the first side 204 and the second side 206 has a lower portion and an upper portion. The lower portion may have the same length as the base, and may be substantially rectangular in shape, while the upper portion may be triangular in shape. For example, the first side 204 includes a first lower portion 214 and a first upper portion 216, and the first upper portion 216 gradually narrows or angles toward the middle of the first side 204. Similarly, the second side 206 includes a second lower portion 218 and a second upper portion 220, and the second upper portion 220 gradually narrows or angles toward the middle of the second side 206. A removable or permanent fastener 222 may couple the first upper portion 216 and the second upper portion 220 together. Each of the first side 204 and the second side 206 may also include an aperture adapted to receive the fastener 222. For example, the first side 204 may include a first aperture 224 near the vertex portion of the first side 204 (or away from the top of the base 202, i.e., near the vertex portion of the first upper portion 216). Similarly, the second side 206 may include a second opening (not shown because it is covered by the fastener 222 ) near the apex portion of the second side 206 (or away from the top of the base 202 , ie, near the apex portion of the second upper portion 220 ).
[0034] Each of the first side 204 and the second side 206 may also include a cutout or recess in or on the front end to form a widened channel portion or a channel portion having a greater width than the rest of the channel portion. The widened channel portion may be adapted to receive the prying portion 304 of the pry bar 300 to allow the accessory 200 to be selectively positioned near the end of the prying portion 304. For example, the first side 204 may include a first recess 230 and the second side 206 may include a second recess 232. It should be understood that the accessory 100 may also form such a cutout or recess in or on the front end of the first side 104 and the second side 106 to form a widened channel portion or a channel portion having a greater width than the rest of the channel portion.
[0035] The fastener 222 helps to retain the pry bar 300 in the channel 208 during use of the accessory 200, thereby improving the safety of the user. The fastener 222 may include a handle 226 and a head 228. The handle 226 is arranged through the first opening and the second opening, extending through the channel 208, while the head 228 abuts against one of the first side 204 and the second side 206. The size or diameter of the head 228 is generally larger than the first opening and the second opening to prevent the fastener 222 from being pushed or inserted, or accidentally moved through the first opening and the second opening.
[0036] In one embodiment, the fastener 222 can be a pin-type fastener that is removably inserted into the first opening and the second opening. The pin-type fastener can also include one or more positioning balls located in the handle 226 near one end of the fastener opposite to the head 228 to help keep the fastener in the first opening and the second opening. In other embodiments, the fastener 222 can be any other type of fastener that is removably inserted into the first opening and the second opening. For example, the fastener 222 can be a bolt or screw, a cotter pin, a clevis pin, a clip, a rope, etc. Alternatively, the fastener 222 can be non-removable, or it can be permanent. For example, the fastener 222 can be a pin, whose opposite ends are welded or otherwise permanently connected to the first side 204 and the second side 206, respectively, and can removably or permanently hold the accessory 200 on the pry bar 300.
[0037] To slidably arrange the accessory 200 on the pry bar 300, the fastener 222 is removed from at least one of the first opening and the second opening and moved to allow vertical access to the channel 208. After moving the fastener 222, the pry bar shaft 302 of the pry bar 300 can be vertically arranged in the channel 208. Then, the fastener 222 can be arranged in the first opening and the second opening, extending through the channel 208 to retain the accessory 200 on the pry bar 300. In one embodiment, the channel 208 has a first width and a second width. The first width is formed between the first side 204 and the second side 206 at the first recess 230 and the second recess 232, and the second width is formed between the first side 204 and the second side 206 at the remaining portion of the channel 208. The first width is greater than the second width. The first width is also greater than the width of the pry bar shaft 302 and the width of the prying portion 304, while the second width is greater than the width of the pry bar shaft 302 of the pry bar 300 and less than the width of the prying portion 304. This allows the accessory 200 to slide along the pry bar shaft 302, but prevents the prying portion 304 from moving horizontally completely through the channel 108. Therefore, the accessory 200 is retained by the fastener 222, the pry bar 300 does not accidentally fall, and is held horizontally due to the channel width. This allows the user to couple the accessory 200 to the pry bar 300, and move the combined pry bar 300 and accessory 200 without causing the pry bar 300 to accidentally fall from the accessory 200.
[0038] See also Figure 7 and Figure 8, showing the accessory 200 disposed on the pry bar 300. The accessory 200 is selectively positioned along the pry bar axis 302 proximate to the prying portion 304. However, the accessory 200 is slidable along the pry bar axis 302 to allow a user to selectively position and / or reposition the accessory 200 to provide a desired fulcrum surface for operating the pry bar 300. The first recess 230 and the second recess 232 (forming the first width of the channel 208) also allow the wider prying portion 304 of the pry bar 300 to be disposed in the channel 208 to allow the accessory 200 to be positioned proximate to the end of the prying portion 304.
[0039] See also Fig. 9 , another embodiment of the claimed invention is shown and described. The accessory 400 is similar to the accessories 100 and 200. For example, the accessory 400 includes a base 402 and opposing first and second sides 404, 406 extending upward from the base 402. A channel 408 is formed between the first and second sides 404, 406, and the channel 408 is adapted to slidably receive an exemplary pry bar, such as Figures 2 to 5 , Figure 7 and Figure 8 The pry bar 300 shown. The base 402 includes a bottom surface 410 located at the bottom side of the base 402, and an engagement surface 412 between the first side 404 and the second side 406, and the engagement surface 412 is located on the top side of the base 402 and opposite the bottom side. The bottom surface 410 is suitable for contacting or resting on a ground surface, and compared with the conventional bend of the pry bar shaft 302 of the typical pry bar 300, a larger surface area is provided to define a fulcrum, and the possibility of damaging the ground surface is reduced due to the larger surface area of the bottom surface 410 contacting the ground surface. The bottom surface 410 also reduces the risk of the pry bar 300 with the attached accessory 400 slipping during use. In this embodiment, the bottom surface 410 has an arcuate convex geometry to form a fulcrum. The bottom surface 410 can be smooth or include friction enhancements, such as serrations or other surface features or treatments to provide a surface suitable for gripping or increasing the friction between the bottom surface 410 and the ground surface during use. Bottom surface 410 may or may not have sharp edges to limit damage to the grounding surface during pry bar actuation.
[0040] Engagement surface 412 may be flat, or may include a protrusion (similar to engagement surface 112 of accessory 100 described above) that acts as a fulcrum surface for pry bar 300 to pivot. For example, engagement surface 412 may be an arcuate surface, or any other shape including a flat surface suitable for providing a fulcrum surface that may act as a fulcrum surface for a pry bar (similar to engagement surface 112 of accessory 100 described above). Additionally, engagement surface 412 may optionally include serrations or other surface features or treatments to provide a surface suitable for gripping or increasing friction with pry bar 300.
[0041] The first side 404 and the second side 406 extend substantially vertically upward from opposite sides of the base 404, forming a channel 408 between the first side 404 and the second side 406. For example, each of the first side 404 and the second side 406 may extend substantially perpendicularly or at a substantially 90 degree angle relative to the plane of the base 402. The base 402 and the first side 404 and the second side 406 may be a single unitary piece, or may be separate components connected together, for example, by fasteners, adhesives, etc.
[0042] As shown, each of the first side 404 and the second side 406 has a lower portion and an upper portion. The lower portion may have the same length as the base, and the shape may be generally rectangular, while the shape of the upper portion may be triangular. For example, the first side 404 includes a first lower portion 414 and a first upper portion 416, and the first upper portion 416 gradually narrows or angles toward the center of the first side 404. Similarly, the second side 406 includes a second lower portion 418 and a second upper portion 420, and the second upper portion 420 gradually narrows or angles toward the center of the second side 406. A removable or permanent fastener (not shown) such as the above-mentioned fastener 122 or 222 may couple the first upper portion 416 and the second upper portion 420 together. Each of the first side 404 and the second side 406 may include an opening adapted to receive the fastener 422. For example, the first side 404 may include a first opening 424 near the apex portion of the first side 404 (or away from the top of the base 402, i.e., near the apex portion of the first upper portion 416). Similarly, the second side 406 may include a second opening 425 near the apex portion of the second side 406 (or away from the top of the base 402, i.e., near the apex portion of the second upper portion 420). Each of the first side 404 and the second side 406 may also include a cutout or recess in or on the front end (as described above in conjunction with the accessory 200) to form a widened channel portion or a channel portion having a greater width than the rest of the channel portion.
[0043] A fastener (not shown), such as fasteners 122 or 222 described above, can couple first side 404 and second side 406 together and help retain pry bar 300 in channel 408 during use of accessory 400, thereby increasing safety for the user. For example, the fastener can include a handle and a head. The handle can be disposed through the first and second openings, extending through channel 408, while the head abuts against one of first side 404 and second side 406. The size or diameter of the head is typically larger than the first and second openings to prevent the fastener from being pushed or inserted, or accidentally moved through the first and second openings.
[0044] In one embodiment, the fastener can be a pin-type fastener that is removably inserted into the first opening and the second opening. The pin-type fastener can also include one or more positioning balls located in the handle near one end of the fastener opposite the head to help keep the fastener in the first opening and the second opening. In other embodiments, the fastener can be any other type of fastener that is removably inserted into the first opening and the second opening. For example, the fastener can be a bolt or screw, a cotter pin, a clevis pin, a clip, a rope, etc. Alternatively, the fastener can be non-removable, or it can be permanent. For example, the fastener can be a pin whose opposite ends are welded or otherwise permanently connected to the first side 404 and the second side 406, respectively, and can removably or permanently hold the accessory 400 on the pry bar 300.
[0045] In order to slidably arrange the accessory 400 on the pry bar 300, the fastener is removed from at least one of the first opening and the second opening to allow vertical access to the channel 408. After the fastener is removed, the pry bar shaft 302 of the pry bar 300 can be arranged vertically in the channel 408. Then, the fastener can be arranged in the first opening and the second opening, extending through the channel 408 to hold the accessory 400 on the pry bar 300. In one embodiment, the channel width of the channel 408 is greater than the width of the pry bar shaft 302 and less than the width of the prying portion 304 of the pry bar 300. This allows the accessory 400 to slide along the pry bar shaft 302, but prevents the prying portion 304 from moving horizontally through the channel 408. Therefore, the accessory 400 is vertically held by the fastener, the pry bar 300 does not fall, and is held horizontally due to the channel width. This also allows a user to couple accessory 400 to pry bar 300 and pick up or move the combined pry bar 300 and accessory 400 without accidentally dropping pry bar 300 from accessory 400 .
[0046] Although the accessory is described as being used with a pry bar, the accessory is also suitable for use with other tools that can be used as general-purpose levers, such as sticks, rods, crowbars, pry bars, etc. In addition, any features of accessory 100 can be incorporated into accessory 200 or 400, any features of accessory 200 can be incorporated into accessory 100 or 400, and any features of accessory 400 can be incorporated into accessory 100 or 200.
[0047] As used herein, the term "coupled" may refer to any direct or indirect physical, electrical, magnetic or other connection between two entities. The term "coupled" is not limited to a fixed, direct connection between two entities.
