Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a herbicidal composition, which includes L-phosphinothricin, its salts, esters or combinations thereof. More particularly, the herbicidal composition of the present invention can be particularly used for pre-plant burndown treatment. The present disclosure also provides a method for controlling undesirable vegetation in burndown treatment application using the herbicidal composition of the present invention. Background Art

[0002] Herbicides are pesticides that can be used to kill or control unwanted plants or weeds. Generally, there are two types of herbicides - selective and non-selective herbicides. Selective herbicides kill certain target weeds while leaving the desired crop relatively unharmed, while non-selective herbicides kill both weeds and crops. Weeds can reduce crop yields by competing with water, sunlight, and nutrients. Profitable crop production depends on effective weed control.

[0003] Completely removing weeds from the soil with herbicides before planting a crop or in the absence of any crop is called a "kill treatment". Weeds present at planting typically grow much faster than crop plants and therefore compete very early in the growing season, thereby damaging crop plants and reducing crop yields. Therefore, it is desirable to plant crops in weed-free seed beds, or to ensure that there are essentially no weeds or undesirable plants when the crop is planted or before the crop emerges. Herbicides used in the pre-emergence stage of the crop provide potential control of weeds without crop-weed competition in the initial stages of development, thereby increasing crop yields. Early kill treatment herbicide applications provide the opportunity to manage winter annuals and other early emerging weeds before they become difficult to control. In fact, pre-plant kill treatment tank mixes can remove early weed infestations and provide a broad spectrum of foliar and residual weed control. Dicamba or 2,4-D is typically used in a kill treatment tank mix with glyphosate for post-emergence control of tough broadleaf weeds. Therefore, including an herbicide with residual activity in the biocidal treatment tank mixture can help extend seasonal weed control and reduce seasonal weed growth.

[0004] The inventors of the present disclosure provide herbicidal compositions and methods of using the herbicidal compositions for biocidal treatment applications, which are related to the use of pre-emergence herbicides for controlling weeds in crops.

[0005] Glufosinate (also known as phosphinothricin; DL-homoalanin-4-yl(methyl)phosphinic acid) is a racemic phosphinic acid amino acid. Its ammonium salt (glufosinate ammonium) is widely used as a non-selective herbicide and is the active ingredient of various commercial herbicide formulations. The herbicidally active L-isomer of glufosinate is a structural analog of glutamate and is therefore a competitive inhibitor of glutamine synthetase (GS) of bacteria and plants. The D-isomer is not a GS inhibitor and is not herbicidally active. Glufosinate is a contact herbicide and is absorbed by plants primarily through the leaves. It is presumed that there is no uptake from the soil through the roots because glufosinate is rapidly degraded by soil microorganisms. Glufosinate has a broad spectrum of activity covering both monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous species.

[0006] Glutamine synthetase (GS) is one of the most abundant enzymes in plant cells. It is essential for nitrogen metabolism as it catalyzes the conversion of glutamate and ammonium to glutamine. The important role of GS in plants makes the enzyme an interesting target for herbicides. Inhibition of GS has disastrous consequences for plant metabolism, resulting in a massive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to impairment of photosynthesis and photorespiration. Several experimental inhibitors have been discovered, but only glufosinate has been developed as a commercial herbicide. Glufosinate is a racemic mixture of D- and L-phosphinothricin, but only the L-isomer inhibits GS. In addition to exhibiting a significant herbicidal effect against a broad spectrum of weeds, the L-isomer of glufosinate can be used as a nitrogen source by microorganisms and is subject to microbial degradation. Rapid dissipation of the DL-racemic mixture was found in all soils studied under laboratory and field conditions.

[0007] In today's crop production systems, it is necessary to start with a good weed control program because it helps achieve maximum initial crop growth and reduce weed interference in the early stages of the crop cycle. Since weed-crop competition is critical in the early stages of the crop cycle, weed interference in the early stages has a direct impact on the yield of the crop. Therefore, the present disclosure provides a herbicidal composition and a method for controlling broadleaf weeds and grass weeds, and more specifically for early (pre-emergence) pre-planting weed control applications to prepare fields for planting crops such as cotton, corn, soybeans, etc. The herbicidal composition of the present disclosure includes L-glufosinate, its salts, esters, or combinations thereof.
