AI Technical Summary
Existing detergent compositions have difficulty stabilizing enzymes in a pH range of 5.4 to 6.7 without borates, leading to product instability and crystallization, which affects enzyme lifespan and buffering effect.
A surfactant system containing at least 30% nonionic surfactant, less than 30% linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant, and citric acid is used. The optimized ratio of nonionic and anionic surfactants ensures that the composition stabilizes the enzyme at a pH of 5.4 to 6.7, and avoids the use of boron complexes.
This achieves enzymatic stability and buffering effect of the detergent composition within the target pH range without borate, ensuring product stability and effectiveness over its shelf life.

Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] This disclosure relates in general to liquid compositions having improved enzyme stability. Background Technology
[0002] The discussion of the shortcomings and needs that existed in the art prior to this disclosure is by no means an admission that those skilled in the art were aware of such shortcomings and needs prior to this disclosure.
[0003] Increased regulatory pressure necessitates the provision of consumer laundry detergents with beneficial detergency without the chemical properties subject to regulation due to environmental and health impacts. Typically, detergent compositions without borates are unstable in the pH range of 5.4 to 6.7. Borates (borate complexes) are known to be reversible protease inhibitors, improving enzyme lifespan / stability. Borate inhibitors also prevent proteolytic degradation associated with enzymes. Furthermore, borates and their salts provide adequate buffering stability for liquid detergent products. However, borates and their salts are problematic because they readily lead to product instability and crystallization (resulting in precipitates or particles in formulated products). Therefore, there is a need to find safer methods for formulating borate-free consumer products.
[0004] This disclosure provides a detergent composition that contains a stable enzyme without borate, while still providing the necessary buffering for manufacturing and long-term product use. Buffering is a function of acid / base reaction properties. The better the buffering of the formulated product, the more reliably we can produce the product at the target pH and maintain it at that pH throughout the product's shelf life. Unbuffered products will exhibit significant pH fluctuations throughout their shelf life due to common material degradation chemistry occurring in detergent formulations, such as ester hydrolysis, Shiff-base reactions of fragrances, and surfactant hydrolysis. The compositions of this disclosure contain citric acid to stabilize the enzyme, rather than boron complexes. Additionally, to stabilize the enzyme at pH values from 5.4 to 6.7, the compositions of this disclosure contain a surfactant system having at least 30% by weight of a nonionic surfactant. Summary of the Invention
[0005] In one example of this disclosure, the detergent composition comprises a surfactant system of 1% to 50% by weight based on the composition. The surfactant system comprises more than 30% by weight of a nonionic surfactant, less than 30% by weight of a linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant, and surfactants selected from the group consisting of sodium lauryl sulfate, highly branched alkyl sulfates, amine oxides, alkyl glycol sulfates, or combinations thereof. The composition also comprises at least 0.5% by weight of citric acid based on the composition. The composition comprises less than 8% by weight of an alcohol ethoxysulfate surfactant based on the composition, the composition is substantially free of boron complexes, and the composition has a pH of 5.4 to 6.7.
[0006] In another example of this disclosure, a method for treating stains on fabrics includes washing the fabric in a washing liquid containing a detergent composition. The detergent composition comprises a surfactant system of 1% to 50% by weight of the composition. The surfactant system comprises more than 30% by weight of a nonionic surfactant, less than 30% by weight of a linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant, and a surfactant selected from the group consisting of sodium lauryl sulfate, highly branched alkyl sulfates, amine oxides, alkyl glycol sulfates, or combinations thereof. The composition also comprises at least 0.5% by weight of citric acid. The surfactant system is substantially free of alcohol ethoxysulfate surfactants, the composition is substantially free of boron complexes, and the composition has a pH of 5.4 to 6.7. [0026] Alkyl ether carboxylates can be straight-chain or branched. They can have an average carbon chain length of about 10 to about 26, about 10 to about 20, or about 16 to about 18. Alkyl ether carboxylates can have an average ethoxylation level of about 2 to about 20, about 7 to about 13, about 8 to about 12, or about 9.5 to about 10.5. They can be used in acid or salt form. The alkyl chain can contain a cis or trans double bond. Commercial alkyl ether carboxylates are available from, for example, Kao Huntsman and Clariant
[0027] The alkyl chain of the alkyl sulfate anionic surfactant can be straight-chain, branched, or a mixture thereof. The branched alkyl sulfate anionic surfactant can be a branched primary alkyl sulfate, a branched secondary alkyl sulfate, or a mixture thereof, preferably a branched primary alkyl sulfate, wherein the branch is preferably at the 2-position, or alternatively may be further present under the alkyl chain, or may be multi-branched, wherein the branch is distributed along the alkyl chain. [0028] Branched 2-alkyl primary alkyl alcohol sulfates and 2-alkyl primary alkyl alcohol ethoxy sulfates with specific alkyl chain length distributions can provide enhanced detergency (especially in cold water). 2-alkyl branched alcohols (and the 2-alkyl branched alkyl sulfates and 2-alkyl branched alkyl ethoxy sulfates derived from them, as well as other surfactants) are positional isomers, where the hydroxymethyl group (composed of a methylene bridge (-CH2- unit) attached to a hydroxyl (-OH) group) is positioned differently on the carbon chain. Therefore, 2-alkyl branched alkyl alcohols are typically composed of mixtures of positional isomers. Furthermore, it is well known that fatty alcohols (such as 2-alkyl branched alcohols) and surfactants are characterized by their chain length distributions. In other words, fatty alcohols and surfactants are typically composed of blends of molecules with different alkyl chain lengths (although single-chain-length cutoffs can be obtained). It is noteworthy that the 2-alkyl primary alcohols described herein cannot be obtained by simply blending commercially available materials; they can have specific alkyl chain length distributions and / or specific fractions of certain positional isomers. Specifically, it is not possible to achieve a distribution of surfactant with m+n=11 by weight of approximately 50% to approximately 100% by weight in commercially available materials obtained through blending.
[0029] Detergent compositions may comprise a mixture of surfactant isomers of Formula 14 and a surfactant of Formula 15:

[0032] X can be neutralized, for example, with sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, monoisopropanolamine, diamine, polyamine, primary amine, secondary amine, tertiary amine, amine-containing surfactant, or combinations thereof.
[0033] X may be selected from sulfates, alkoxylated alkyl sulfates, sulfonates, amine oxides, polyalkoxylated compounds, polyhydroxy moieties, phosphate esters, glycerol sulfonates, polygluconates, polyphosphate esters, phosphonates, sulfosuccinates, sulfosuccinamides, polyalkoxylated carboxylates, glucosamides, taurines, sarcosinates, glycines, hydroxyethyl sulfonates, dialkylolamides, monoalkylolamides, monoalkylolamide sulfates, diethylene glycolamides, diethylene glycolamide sulfates, glyceryl esters, glyceryl ester sulfates, glyceryl ethers, glyceryl ether sulfates, polyglyceryl ethers, polyglyceryl ether sulfates, sorbitol esters, polyalkoxylated sorbitol esters, ammonium alkyl sulfonates, ammonium betaine, alkylated quaternary ammonium salts, alkylated / polyhydroxyalkylated quaternary ammonium salts, alkylated / polyhydroxyoxypropyl quaternary ammonium salts, imidazoline, 2-yl-succinates, sulfonated alkyl esters, sulfonated fatty acids, and mixtures thereof.
[0034] Anionic surfactants can also be biosurfactants. Anionic biosurfactants can include glycolipids, such as sophorolipids and rhamnolipids, and amino acid-based surfactants, such as acylglycinate, acylsarcosine, acylglutamate, and acyltaurate. Rhamnolipids can have a single rhamnosine ring or two rhamnosine rings.
[0035] Nonionic surfactants
[0036] The detergent composition may also contain a nonionic surfactant. The surfactant system may contain more than 30% by weight or more than 50% by weight of a nonionic surfactant based on the weight of the surfactant system. The surfactant system may contain 30% to 80%, 30% to 70%, 30% to 60%, 30% to 50%, 30% to 40%, 40% to 80%, 40% to 70%, 40% to 60%, 40% to 50%, 50% to 80%, 50% to 70%, 50% to 60%, 60% to 80%, 60% to 70%, or 70% to 80% of a nonionic surfactant based on the weight of the surfactant system.
[0037] Nonionic surfactants may comprise alcohol alkoxylates, oxygen-synthesized alcohol alkoxylates, Guerbert alcohol alkoxylates, alkylphenol alcohol alkoxylates, alkyl polyglucosides, or mixtures thereof. Preferably, nonionic surfactants may include, for example, alkoxylated alcohol nonionic surfactants, alkyl polyglucoside nonionic surfactants, and mixtures thereof. Preferably, the alkoxylated alcohol nonionic surfactant is a linear or branched primary or secondary alkyl alkoxylated nonionic surfactant, preferably an alkyl alkoxylated nonionic surfactant, preferably an alkyl ethoxylated nonionic surfactant, preferably containing an average of about 9 to about 15 carbon atoms in its alkyl chain, preferably about 10 to about 16 carbon atoms, more preferably about 12 to about 15 carbon atoms; and having an average of about 5 to about 12, preferably about 6 to about 10, most preferably about 7 to about 8 or about 9 to about 10 ethylene oxide units per mole of alcohol. For example, nonionic surfactants may include ethoxylated nonionic surfactants, wherein ethoxylated nonionic surfactants with an average carbon chain length of about 10 to about 16 include ethoxylated nonionic surfactants with an average carbon chain length of about 12 to about 14 and an average ethoxylation level of about 9 and a second ethoxylated nonionic surfactant with an average carbon chain length of about 14 to about 15 and an average ethoxylation level of about 7.
[0038] Nonionic surfactants can have the formula R(OC2H4). n OH, wherein R is selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydrocarbon groups comprising about 8 to about 16 carbon atoms and may be straight-chain or branched, and n has an average value of about 5 to about 15. For example, the additional nonionic surfactant may be selected from ethoxylated alcohols having an average of about 12 to 14 carbon atoms in the alcohol (alkyl) moiety and an average degree of ethoxylation of about 7 to 9 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of alcohol.
[0039] Additional non-limiting examples include the formula R(OC2H4). n OH- ethoxylated alkylphenols, wherein R comprises an alkylphenyl group, wherein the alkyl group comprises about 8 to about 12 carbon atoms, and the average value of n is about 5 to about 15, C 12 -C 18 Alkyl ethoxylates, such as those from Shell Nonionic surfactant; C 14 -C 22 Medium-chain branched alcohols; C 14 -C 22 Medium-chain branched alkyl ethoxylates, BAE xWhere x is 1 to 30. The nonionic ethoxylated alcohol surfactants described herein may also contain residual alkoxylation catalysts, which can be considered residues or impurities of the reaction. They may also contain various impurities or byproducts of the alkoxylation reaction. Impurities can vary depending on the catalyst used and the reaction conditions. Impurities include alkyl ethers, such as dialkyl ethers, like bis(dodecyl) ether; glycols, such as diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, pentaethylene glycol, and other polyethylene glycols.
[0040] Nonionic ethoxylated alcohols can be narrow-range ethoxylated alcohols. Narrow-range ethoxylated alcohols can have the following general formula (I):
[0041]
[0042] Where R is selected from saturated or unsaturated, straight-chain or branched C. 10 -C 16 Alkyl groups, wherein more than 90% of n is 0 ≤ n ≤ 15. Furthermore, the average value of n may be between about 4 and about 14, preferably between about 6 and about 10, wherein less than about 10% by weight of alcohol ethoxylates are ethoxylates with n < 7, and between 10% by weight and about 20% by weight of alcohol ethoxylates are ethoxylates with n = 8.
[0043] The composition may contain an average of about 10 n. The composition may have the following ranges for each of the following n: n=0 up to 5%, n=1, 2, 3, 4, 5 up to 2%, n=6 up to 4%, n=7 up to 10%, n=8 between 12% and 20%, n=9 between 15% and 25%, n=10 between 15% and 30%, n=11 between 10% and 20%, n=12 up to 10%, and n>12 up to 10%. The composition may have between 30% and 70% n=9 to 10. The composition may have more than 50% of its composition consisting of n=8 to 11.
[0044] R is selected from saturated or unsaturated, straight-chain or branched C10-C16 alkyl groups, wherein the average value of n is between about 6 and about 10. R may also be selected from saturated or unsaturated, straight-chain or branched C8-C6 alkyl groups. 16 An alkyl group, wherein more than 90% of n is 0 ≤ n ≤ 15, and wherein the average value of n is between about 5 and about 10, wherein less than about 20% by weight of the alcohol ethoxylate is an ethoxylate with n < 8. R may also be selected from saturated or unsaturated, straight-chain or branched C. 10 -C 16Alkyl groups, wherein more than 90% of n is 0 ≤ n ≤ 15, and wherein the average value of n is between about 6 and about 10, wherein less than about 10% by weight of alcohol ethoxylates are ethoxylates with n < 7, and wherein 10% by weight of alcohol ethoxylates are ethoxylates with n = 8.
[0045] The alcohol ethoxylated compounds described herein are generally not single compounds as represented by their general formula (I), but rather mixtures comprising several homologues with different polyalkylene oxide chain lengths and molecular weights. Among the homologues, those having a total number of alkylene oxide units per mole of alcohol that is closer to the most common alkylene oxide adduct are desirable; homologues with a total number of alkylene oxide units that is much lower or much higher than the most common alkylene oxide adduct are less desirable. In other words, “narrow-range” or “peaked” alkoxylated alcohol compositions are desirable. A “narrow-range” or “peaked” alkoxylated alcohol composition refers to an alkoxylated alcohol composition having a narrow distribution of the number of moles of alkylene oxide adducts.
[0046] Alkoxylated alcohol compositions with a “narrow range” or “peaked” distribution may be ideal for the selected application. Homologues within the selected target distribution range can have a suitable lipophilic-hydrophilic balance for the selected application. For example, in the case of an ethoxylated alcohol product containing an average ratio of 5 ethylene oxide (EO) units per molecule, homologues with a desired lipophilic-hydrophilic balance can be found in the range of 2EO to 9EO. Homologues with shorter EO chain lengths (<2EO) or longer EO chain lengths (>9EO) may be undesirable for applications where surfactants with an EO / alcohol ratio of 5 are typically selected because such longer and shorter homologues are either too lipophilic or too hydrophilic for the application utilizing the product. Therefore, it is advantageous to develop alkoxylated alcohols with a peaked distribution.
[0047] The narrow-range alkoxylated alcohol compositions of this disclosure may have an average degree of ethoxylation of about 0 to about 15, for example, about 4 to about 14, about 5-10, about 8-11, and about 6-9. The narrow-range alkoxylated alcohol compositions of this disclosure may have an average degree of ethoxylation of 10. [0048] The alkyl polyglucoside surfactant may be selected from C10-C16 alkyl polyglucoside surfactants. The alkyl polyglucoside surfactant may have a number-average degree of polymerization of 0.1 to 3.0, preferably 1.0 to 2.0, more preferably 1.2 to 1.6. The alkyl polyglucoside surfactant may comprise a blend of a short-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactant and a medium- to long-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactant, wherein the short-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactant has an alkyl chain containing 10 or fewer carbon atoms, and the medium- to long-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactant has an alkyl chain containing more than 10 to 18 carbon atoms, preferably 12 to 14 carbon atoms.
[0049] Short-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactants have a unimodal chain length distribution between C8 and C10, medium- to long-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactants have a unimodal chain length distribution between C10 and C18, and medium-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactants have a unimodal chain length distribution between C12 and C14. In contrast, C8 to C18 alkyl polyglucoside surfactants typically have a unimodal distribution of alkyl chains between C8 and C18, such as C8 to C16. Therefore, the combination of short-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactants with medium- to long-chain or medium-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactants has a wider chain length distribution, or even a bimodal distribution, than the non-blended C8 to C18 alkyl polyglucoside surfactants. Preferably, the weight ratio of short-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactants to long-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactants is 1:1 to 10:1, more preferably 1.5:1 to 5:1, and more preferably 2:1 to 4:1. It has been found that blends of these short-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactants and long-chain alkyl polyglucoside surfactants result in faster dissolution of detergent solutions in water and improved initial foaming, while also improving foam stability.
[0050] C10-C16 alkyl polyglucosides are commercially available from several suppliers (e.g., from Seppic Corporation). Surfactants; and from BASF Corporation 600CSUP 650EC 600CSUP / MB and 650 EC / MB). 215UP is a preferred short-chain APG surfactant. 600CSUP is a preferred medium- to long-chain APG surfactant.

[0177] pH
[0178] The compositions of this disclosure may have a pH of 4 to 10, 5 to 9, 4 to 8, 5 to 8, 5.4 to 6.7, 5.4 to 6.4, 5.7 to 6.3, or any value within the foregoing range or any range thereof. A pH within this range is advantageous because the pH of the compositions of this disclosure can be controlled using an organic acid (such as, for example, citric acid) as a buffer, while also utilizing the cleaning properties of the organic acid in washing, thus giving the organic acid multiple functions in the compositions of this disclosure. This is unique because it is conventionally believed that enzymes, when formulated in the compositions of this disclosure, would be unstable in a pH range of 5.4 to 6.7, or 5.4 to 6.4, or 5.7 to 6.3. This is important because the compositions disclosed herein thereby avoid and do not include undesirable chemicals commonly used to control pH, such as borates and (monoethanolamine) MEA as non-limiting examples, as well as stabilizing several polymeric chemicals, such as the detergent polymers disclosed above and other ester moieties (such as fragrance ingredients or small molecule esters), wherein SRP and other ester moieties are known to degrade at a more common pH of 8-10.

[0181] The compositions disclosed herein may have properties such as those in 100s -1The measured values are 100 cP to 1000 cP, 100 cP to 800 cP, 100 cP to 600 cP, 100 cP to 400 cP, 100 cP to 200 cP, 200 cP to 1000 cP, 200 cP to 800 cP, 200 cP to 600 cP, 200 cP to 400 cP, 400 cP to 1000 cP, 400 cP to 800 cP, 400 cP to 600 cP, 600 cP to 1000 cP, 600 cP to 800 cP, 800 cP to 1000 cP, or any value within the aforementioned ranges or any range of high shear viscosity resulting therefrom.
[0182] When the ratio of the two (low shear viscosity divided by high shear viscosity) is less than 20, the product demonstrates ideal non-Newtonian rheological properties, being both physically stable and easily flowable to consumers. This ratio can be within the range of 1 to 20, 1 to 15, 1 to 10, 1 to 7, 1 to 5, 1 to 3, 1 to 2, 2 to 20, 2 to 15, 2 to 10, 2 to 7, 2 to 5, 2 to 3, 3 to 20, 3 to 15, 3 to 10, 3 to 7, 3 to 5, 5 to 20, 5 to 15, 5 to 10, 5 to 7, 7 to 20, 7 to 15, 7 to 10, 10 to 20, 10 to 15, 15 to 20, or any value within the aforementioned ranges or any range derived therefrom. The composition within the provided ratios will be sufficiently viscous at rest to ensure stability, but sufficiently thin upon pouring to dissolve during washing. When the ratio is greater than 20, the composition will not dissolve in the washing liquid; it will be so viscous that water will not dissolve the composition to form a washing liquid. For example, if a composition with a ratio greater than 20 is poured directly into the washing machine drum, the composition will not dissolve and will remain largely in place during dispensing and throughout the wash duration. If the composition has a ratio less than 1, the composition will not be stable in place and will exhibit phase separation and will not remain emulsified.
[0183] fibrous water-soluble unit dose products
[0184] The composition may be in the form of a fibrous, water-soluble product. The fibrous, water-soluble product may comprise one or more layers. These layers may be stacked on top of each other. These layers may be placed directly on top of each other, with particles between these layers, or a combination thereof.
[0185] Fibrous water-soluble unit-dose products may contain 50% or more of bio-based material, such as, for example, 50% to 95% bio-based material. Some of the individual components of a fibrous water-soluble unit-dose product may be fully bio-based to produce a product with a total bio-based content greater than 50%.
[0186] These fibrous, water-soluble unit-dose products dissolve under a variety of washing conditions, such as low temperature, low water, and / or one or more short washing cycles, where consumers have overloaded the machine, particularly for highly absorbent items, while providing sufficient surfactant delivery to achieve the desired effect on the target consumer substrate (with properties similar to those of today's liquid products).
[0187] The surface of a fibrous, water-soluble unit-dose article may include a printed area. The printed area may cover approximately 10% to approximately 100% of the article surface. The printed area may include ink, pigment, dye, bluing agent, or mixtures thereof. The printed area may be opaque, translucent, or transparent. The printed area may be monochrome or multicolor. The printed area may be on more than one side of the article and may contain instruction text, graphics, etc. The surface of the water-soluble unit-dose article may contain an aversive agent, such as a bittering agent. Suitable bittering agents include, but are not limited to, naringin, sucrose octaacetate, quinine hydrochloride, denatamium benzoate, or mixtures thereof. Any suitable amount of the aversive agent may be used. Suitable amounts include, but are not limited to, 1 ppm to 5000 ppm, or even 100 ppm to 2500 ppm, or even 250 ppm to 2000 ppm.
[0188] Fibrous water-soluble unit dose articles may exhibit a thickness of greater than 0.01 mm and / or greater than 0.05 mm and / or greater than 0.1 mm and / or about 100 mm and / or about 50 mm and / or about 20 mm and / or about 10 mm and / or about 5 mm and / or about 2 mm and / or about 0.5 mm and / or about 0.3 mm.
[0189] The fibrous, water-soluble unit dose product may have a basis weight of about 500 g / m2 to about 5,000 grams / m2, or about 1,000 g / m2 to about 4,000 grams / m2, or about 1,500 g / m2 to about 3,500 g / m2, or about 2,000 g / m2 to about 3,000 g / m2, or any combination thereof.
[0190] Fibrous water-soluble unit-dose articles may exhibit different regions, such as different areas of basis weight, density, thickness, and / or wetting properties. Fibrous water-soluble unit-dose articles may be compressed at edge seals. Fibrous water-soluble unit-dose articles may contain texture on one or more surfaces. The surface of the fibrous water-soluble unit-dose article may include patterns, such as non-random repeating patterns. Fibrous water-soluble unit-dose articles may include pores. Fibrous water-soluble unit-dose articles may include a fibrous structure having discrete fibrous element regions that differ from other regions of the fibrous elements in the structure. Fibrous water-soluble unit-dose articles may be used as is or may be coated with one or more surfactants.
[0191] A fibrous, water-soluble unit-dose product may comprise one or more sheets. A fibrous, water-soluble unit-dose product may comprise at least two and / or at least three and / or at least four and / or at least five sheets. The fibrous sheets may be fibrous structures. Each sheet may comprise one or more layers, such as one or more fibrous element layers, one or more particle layers, and / or one or more fibrous element / particle mixture layers. The layer may be sealed. Specifically, the particle layers and the fibrous element / particle mixture layers may be sealed to prevent particle leakage. A water-soluble unit-dose product may comprise multiple sheets, each sheet comprising two layers, one being a fibrous element layer and the other a fibrous element / particle mixture layer, and the multiple sheets are sealed together (e.g., at the edges). Sealing inhibits particle leakage and helps the unit-dose product maintain its original structure. However, upon addition of the water-soluble unit-dose product to water, the unit-dose product dissolves and releases particles into the washing liquid.
[0192] Fibrous water-soluble unit doses can take any three-dimensional structural form. Fibrous water-soluble unit dose articles can be open-celled. The article can also be cut or shaped into various sizes for different intended uses. For example, water-soluble unit doses can be square, rounded square, kite-shaped, rectangular, triangular, circular, elliptical, and combinations thereof.
[0193] Fibrous water-soluble unit doses may contain fewer than 10 ingredients. Water-soluble unit doses may contain 3 to 9 ingredients, such as 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 ingredients.
[0194] The fibrous, water-soluble unit-dose articles disclosed herein comprise a water-soluble fibrous structure and one or more particles. The fibrous, water-soluble fibrous structure may include multiple fibrous elements, such as multiple filaments. One or more particles, such as one or more active agent-containing particles, may be distributed throughout the structure. The fibrous, water-soluble unit-dose articles may include multiple fibrous elements of two or more types and / or three or more types, said fibrous elements intertwined or otherwise associated with each other to form the fibrous structure, and one or more particles, said particles may be distributed throughout the fibrous structure.
[0195] Fibrous, water-soluble unit-dosage articles may include water-soluble fibrous structures. Water-soluble fibrous structures may include two or more different fibrous elements. Non-limiting examples of differences in fibrous elements may include physical differences, such as differences in diameter, length, texture, shape, rigidity, elasticity, etc.; chemical differences such as crosslinking level, solubility, melting point, Tg, surfactants, filament-forming materials, color, surfactant content, basis weight, filament-forming material content, presence of any coating on the fibrous element, biodegradability, hydrophobicity, contact angle, etc.; differences in whether the fibrous element loses its physical structure when exposed to the intended use conditions; differences in whether the fibrous element changes its morphology when exposed to the intended use conditions; and differences in the rate at which one or more of the surfactants that release the fibrous element when exposed to the intended use conditions. The two or more fibrous elements in the fibrous structure may contain different surfactants. This may be a case where different surfactants may be incompatible with each other, such as anionic surfactants and cationic polymers. When different fibrous elements are used, the resulting structures may exhibit different wetting, absorption, and solubility properties.
[0196] Fiber structure
[0197] A fibrous structure comprises one or more fibrous elements. These fibrous elements may be associated with each other to form a structure. The fibrous structure may include particles within and / or on the structure. The fibrous structure may be homogeneous, layered, integral, partitioned, or, if desired, have different active agents defining the various portions described above.
[0198] The fiber structure may include one or more layers, which together form a sheet.
[0199] Fiber elements
[0200] The fiber element may be water-soluble. The fiber element may contain one or more filament-forming materials and / or one or more surfactants, such as the surfactants described above. One or more surfactants may be released from the fiber element, such as when the fiber element and / or the fiber structure including the fiber element are exposed to conditions intended for use.
[0201] Fiber elements can be spun from filament forming compositions (also known as fiber element forming compositions) by means of suitable spinning processes, such as meltblowing, spunbonding, electrospinning and / or rotational spinning.
[0202] As used herein, "filament forming composition" and / or "fiber element forming composition" means a composition suitable for preparing fiber elements, such as by meltblowing and / or spunbonding. A filament forming composition comprises one or more filament forming materials that exhibit properties that make them suitable for spinning into fiber elements. The filament forming materials may comprise polymers. In addition to one or more filament forming materials, the filament forming composition may also comprise one or more surfactants, such as surfactants. Furthermore, the filament forming composition may comprise one or more polar solvents (such as water) in which one or more filament forming materials (e.g., all) and / or one or more surfactants (e.g., all) are dissolved and / or dispersed before spinning fiber elements (such as filaments from the filament forming composition).
[0203] The filament forming composition may comprise two or more different filament forming materials. Therefore, the fiber element may be a single component (one filament forming material) and / or multi-component, such as a bicomponent. Two or more different filament forming materials are randomly combined to form the fiber element. For the purposes of this disclosure, two or more different filament forming materials may be ordered combined to form fiber elements such as core-shell bicomponent fiber elements, which are not considered to be a random mixture of different filament forming materials. The bicomponent fiber element may be in any form, such as side-by-side, core-shell, island-of-the-sea, etc.
[0204] Each fiber element may contain at least one filament-forming material. Furthermore, the fiber element may contain one or more surfactants. These surfactants may be any of the materials described above for inclusion in detergent compositions.
[0205] The fiber element may comprise at least about 5% by weight, and / or at least about 10% by weight, and / or at least about 15% by weight, and / or at least about 20% by weight, and / or less than about 80% by weight, and / or less than about 75% by weight, and / or less than about 65% by weight, and / or less than about 60% by weight, and / or less than about 55% by weight, and / or less than about 50% by weight, and / or less than about 45% by weight, and / or less than about 40% by weight, and / or less than about 35% by weight, and / or less than about 30% by weight, and / or less than about 25% by weight of length. The filament-forming material and the dried fibrous elements and / or dried fibrous structures contain more than about 20% by weight, and / or at least about 35% by weight, and / or at least about 40% by weight, and / or at least about 45% by weight, and / or at least about 50% by weight, and / or at least about 55% by weight, and / or at least about 60% by weight, and / or at least about 65% by weight, and / or at least about 70% by weight, and / or less than about 95% by weight, and / or less than about 90% by weight, and / or less than about 85% by weight, and / or less than about 80% by weight, and / or less than about 75% by weight of an active agent, preferably a surfactant. The fibrous elements may contain more than about 80% surfactant by weight based on the dried fibrous elements and / or dried fibrous structures.
[0206] Preferably, each fiber element is characterized by a sufficiently high total surfactant content, for example, at least about 30%, or at least about 40%, or at least about 50%, or at least about 60%, or at least about 70% of the first surfactant based on the weight of the dried fiber element and / or the dried fiber structure.
[0207] The total content of filament-forming material present in the fiber element may be from about 5% to less than about 80% based on the weight of the dried fiber element and / or the dried fiber structure, and the total content of surfactant present in the fiber element may be greater than about 20% to about 95% based on the weight of the dried fiber element and / or the dried fiber structure.
[0208] Typically, fibrous elements are elongated particles whose length greatly exceeds their average diameter, for example, the length-to-average-diameter ratio is at least about 10. Fiber elements can be filaments or fibers. Filaments are relatively longer than fibers. Filaments can have lengths greater than or equal to about 5.08 cm (2 inches), and / or greater than or equal to about 7.62 cm (3 inches), and / or greater than or equal to about 10.16 cm (4 inches), and / or greater than or equal to about 15.24 cm (6 inches). Fibers can have lengths less than about 5.08 cm (2 inches), and / or less than about 3.81 cm (1.5 inches), and / or less than about 2.54 cm (1 inch).
[0209] One or more filament-forming materials and surfactants may be present in the fiber element in a weight ratio of filament-forming material to surfactant of about 2.0 or less, and / or about 1.85 or less, and / or less than about 1.7, and / or less than about 1.6, and / or less than about 1.5, and / or less than about 1.3, and / or less than about 1.2, and / or less than about 1, and / or less than about 0.7, and / or less than about 0.5, and / or less than about 0.4, and / or less than about 0.3, and / or greater than about 0.1, and / or greater than about 0.15, and / or greater than about 0.2. One or more filament-forming materials and surfactants may be present in the fiber element in a weight ratio of filament-forming material to surfactant of about 0.2 to about 0.7.

The fiber elements may also exhibit diameters greater than about 1 μm as measured by the diameter testing methods described herein. The diameter of the fiber elements can be used to control the release rate of one or more active agents present in the fiber element and / or the rate of loss and / or change of the physical structure of the fiber element.
[0213] The surfactant in fibrous water-soluble products can also be in granular form. Granules can be incorporated into fibrous water-soluble products at levels ranging from about 0.1 g to about 70 g. The type of granules used can be any type compatible with the manufacturing system.

[0221] method
[0222] (A) pH measurement:
[0223] pH was measured at 20°C using a Santarius PT-10P pH meter with a gel-filled probe (such as the Toledo probe, part number 52 000 100) calibrated according to the instructions. pH was measured at a 10% by weight dilution in deionized water (i.e., 1 part laundry detergent composition and 9 parts deionized water).
[0224] (B) Rheological measurements:
[0225] Rheological properties were measured using an AR 2000 rheometer from TA Instruments, employing a conical-plate geometry with a 40 mm diameter and a 1° angle. Measurements were taken at 20°C over a time period of 3 minutes, from 0.1 s⁻¹. -1 up to 1200s -1 Logarithmic shear rate scans were used to measure viscosity at different shear rates. At 0.2 s⁻¹... -1 Low shear viscosity was measured at continuous shear rates.
[0226] During the shear scan, at 0.2s -1The low shear viscosity measurement represents the apparent viscosity when the composition is static, and it is related to the consumer's product appearance and the overall physical stability of the surfactant's microstructure.
[0227] In 100s -1 The high shear viscosity at 100s indicates the liquid's behavior in industrial processing and consumer use. While not intending to be bound by theory, it is believed that consumers tend to prefer liquids with higher shear viscosity at 100s. -1 Products with high shear viscosity below 1000 cP are preferred for ease of use.
[0228] (C) Enzyme stability measurement.
[0229] Prepare a diluted solution of 0.5 g calcium chloride dihydrate (Sigma-Aldrich, catalog number C-5080) and 10 g sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate (Sigma-Aldrich, catalog number S-6672) in 1 L deionized water (18.2 MΩ or better). Prepare a TRIS buffer solution of 12.1 g tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Sigma-Aldrich, catalog number -1503), 1.1 g calcium chloride dihydrate, and 5.0 g sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate, pH 8.3, in 1 L deionized water. Prepare a working PNA solution by diluting 250 μL of 1 g N-succinoyl-ALA-ALA-PRO-PHE p-nitroaniline (“PNA”; Sigma-Aldrich, catalog number S-7388) per 10 mL of dimethyl sulfoxide (JTBaker, catalog number JT9224-1) in 25 mL of TRIS buffer.
[0230] C-1 protease analysis Protease analysis is performed by reacting a protease-containing sample with succinyl-Ala-Ala-Pro-Phe p-nitroaniline, resulting in a spectroscopic change in absorbance over time. This reaction is proportional to the level of protease present in the sample. Protease samples are prepared by dilution in a dilution solution. The reaction is initiated by incubating 200 μL of working PNA solution at 37 °C for 360 seconds, followed by delivery of 80 μL of sample preparation and monitoring of absorbance changes at 405 nm. Protease activity levels are determined by a relationship between protease level and reaction rate calibration established for that specific protease. For example, a reference curve can be established by measuring the absorbance after the reaction as described above within a known enzyme concentration range (e.g., from approximately 1 mg enzyme / 100 g product to approximately 100 mg enzyme / 100 g product). "RA protease" is used to define the percentage of enzyme activity retained; it is a measurement of the protease after aging. As shown in the following examples, this is after 2 weeks at 35 °C. While not intended to be theoretically rigorous, this is comparable to a shelf life of approximately 1 year for the composition at room temperature.
[0231] C-2 amylase analysis The amylase reaction utilizes a combination of α-amylase and α-glucosidase present in the sample, reacting with p-nitrophenyl maltose modified with terminal glucose units capped with ethylene groups. This terminal capping inhibits α-glucosidase cleavage until the initial internal bond can be cleaved by α-amylase, followed by α-glucosidase. The increase in absorbance (at 405 nm) per minute promoted by α-glucosidase release of pNPs is proportional to the α-amylase activity in the sample. Amylase samples are prepared by dilution in a dilution solution. Reaction reagents are provided by Thermo Fisher α-amylase reagent (catalog number 984373). The reaction is initiated by incubating 190 μL of α-amylase reagent at 37 °C for 390 seconds, followed by delivery of 25 μL of diluted sample preparation and monitoring spectroscopic absorbance changes at 405 nm. Amylase activity levels are determined by a calibrated relationship between amylase levels and reaction rates established for that specific amylase. For example, a reference curve can be established by measuring the absorbance after the reaction as described above within a known enzyme concentration range (e.g., about 1 mg enzyme / 100 g product to about 100 mg enzyme / 100 g product). "RA amylase" is used to define the percentage of enzyme activity retained; it is a measurement of amylase after aging. As shown in the following examples, this is after 2 weeks at 35°C. Although not intended to be theoretically sound, this is comparable to a shelf life of approximately 1 year for the composition at room temperature.

[0267] 6. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is WA-EXTRA-HP, supplied by Stepan Company
[0268] 7. AES is a C12-15EO2.5S alkylethoxysulfate, wherein the alkyl moiety of AES has a molecular weight of 211 to 218 Daltons, purchased from P&G Chemicals.
[0269] Comparative Examples E, G, I, and K have a nonionic content of less than 30% by weight of nonionic surfactant based on the weight of the surfactant system.
[0270] Example A has a surfactant system comprising 18% by weight of the composition, wherein the surfactant system comprises SLS, an alkyl sulfate anionic surfactant, and a 24-9 nonionic surfactant (alcohol ethoxylate). When the nonionic surfactant constitutes approximately 50% of the surfactant composition and the pH is 6.2, Example A exhibits strong retention of 88% RA protease and 100% RA amylase enzyme activity.
[0271] Example B has the same composition as Example A, but has a pH of 8.2 (compared to pH 6.2 in Example A). Example B exhibits lower levels of RA protease (72%) and RA amylase (97%) than Example A. The pH was altered by adjusting the composition with sodium hydroxide.
[0272] Example C uses BAS instead of SLS in Example A. Example B shows that the enzyme activity retained with a 50:50 alkyl sulfate and nonionic surfactant system is neither specific to chain length (SLS is a C24 surfactant, while BAS is C15) nor specific to branching (SLS is 100% linear, BAS is 86% branched), because the results with C15 BAS provide retention activity results comparable to those of Example A. Comparative Example C shows 88% RA protease and 93% RA amylase.
[0273] Example D has the same composition as Example C, but Example D has a pH of 8.2. Similar to the comparison between Examples A and B, when the pH of the highly branched AS basal structure (Example C) was adjusted to 8.2, we observed a similar decrease in protease retention activity. Example D shows 73% RA protease and 98% RA amylase. The pH was changed by adjusting the composition with sodium hydroxide.
[0274] Comparative Example E was used to determine the effect of a surfactant base structure based entirely on anionic surfactants. When no nonionic surfactant was formulated in the surfactant composition, no enzymatic activity was found in the base structure at pH 6. Comparative Example E showed 0% RA protease and 0% RA amylase.
[0275] Example F is an example of a low-surfactant system in which the composition comprises 33% by weight of a nonionic surfactant based on the weight of the surfactant system. Example F shows 51% RA protease and 24% RA amylase, which exhibit some retained activity in the composition at pH 6, but the enzyme activity begins to decrease with decreasing presence of the nonionic surfactant.
[0276] Comparative Example G uses an anionic surfactant, LAS, instead of the nonionic surfactant in Example F, demonstrating the critical role of the nonionic surfactant in the surfactant system. Comparative Example G shows 0% RA protease and 51% RA amylase.
[0277] Example H shows that when the composition is formulated with 50% by weight of a nonionic surfactant based on the surfactant system and at pH 6, enzyme RA increases; however, this example has a lower total surfactant content (12% by weight) in the composition, unlike Example AD. Example H shows 96% RA protease and 47% RA amylase.
[0278] Comparative Example I, with a total surfactant content of 12% by weight based on the composition, wherein the surfactant system is 100% by weight of anionic surfactants (SLS and LAS), showed that a lower total surfactant content did not improve enzyme RA, as Comparative Example I showed 0% RA protease and 55% RA amylase. This was also observed in Comparative Example E with a total surfactant content of 20% by weight based on the composition.
[0279] Example J illustrates another non-limiting example where LAS alone does not absorb enzyme RA to 0%, such as when it is formulated in a surfactant composition, wherein 50% by weight of the surfactant system is an anionic surfactant LAS and the other 50% by weight is a nonionic surfactant. Here, even when formulating LAS, we significantly improved enzyme RA (85% protease) but when NI is greater than 30% by weight of the surfactant system (in this case, 50% by weight). Example J shows 85% RA protease and 44% RA amylase.
[0280] Comparative Example K contains less than 30% by weight of nonionic surfactant (16.7% by weight) at pH 6. Comparative Example K shows 0% RA protease and 20% RA amylase.
[0281] Example L shows a ternary surfactant system composed of multiple anionic surfactants, wherein the composition comprises 20% by weight of a surfactant system based on the weight of the composition, wherein 70% of the nonionic surfactant can be formulated as a ternary surfactant with a LAS anionic surfactant, and excellent enzyme RA results were achieved. This indicates that the presence of a LAS anionic surfactant in a composition having 20% by weight of a surfactant system based on the weight of the composition can achieve strong RA results at pH 6. Example L shows 98% RA protease and 78% RA amylase.
[0282] Example M has the same composition as Example L, but has a pH of 6.6. Example M shows 99% RA protease and 97% RA amylase.
[0283] Example N contains a surfactant system of 27% by weight based on the composition, and includes four surfactant systems with added amine oxide, indicating that the amine oxide does not negatively affect enzyme RA. Example N shows 96% RA protease and 84% RA amylase.
[0284] Example O has a surfactant system of 12% by weight based on the composition, and has a surfactant system of 4. Example O also has a nonionic surfactant of more than 50% by weight based on the surfactant system, and has a pH of 6. Example O shows 71% RA protease and 73% RA amylase.
[0285] Examples show a strong correlation between enzyme stability and the presence of nonionic surfactants at a weight percentage greater than 30% by weight of the surfactant system. This trend is present across a wide range of surfactant contents.
[0286] Comparative Examples E, G, and I show that the protease is completely degraded in the absence of a nonionic surfactant. Example F shows that protease stability is significantly improved when the nonionic surfactant constitutes one-third of the surfactant system by weight. All examples where the nonionic surfactant constitutes at least 50% by weight of the total surfactant system by weight exhibit good enzyme stability against both proteases and amylases.
