Description

Technical Field

[0001] This application claims priority based on Korean Application No. 10-2023-0122776, filed on September 14, 2023, and all contents disclosed in the specification and drawings of that application are incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] This disclosure relates to compositions for removing body odor. Background Technology

[0003] Generally speaking, body odor is produced when sweat secreted by the body's sweat glands is broken down by microorganisms or bacteria. Sweat is secreted by eccrine sweat glands distributed throughout the body or apocrine sweat glands located in areas with more body hair, such as the armpits. The breakdown of fats, proteins, sebum, or pollutants in this sweat by microorganisms or bacteria produces unpleasant body odors such as armpit odor, foot odor, and head odor.

[0004] Excessive secretion of sweat or sebum due to strenuous exercise or stress, or the secretion of proteins and fats along with sweat due to the consumption of oily and fatty foods, can contribute to severe body odor. Other causes include the consumption of strongly flavored foods such as onions, garlic, and curry; the intake of caffeinated beverages such as coffee, chocolate, and cola; alcohol consumption that increases protein and fat levels; and smoking, which imparts unpleasant odors to the body. Body odor varies depending on gender and age, including men, women, infants, and the elderly, and in some cases, it can be particularly unpleasant.

[0005] To control body odor, methods such as antiperspirant, antibacterial, deodorant, and masking are used. Antiperspirant methods temporarily suppress sweat production by constricting pores, thus controlling odor. Deodorant products may use antiperspirants such as aluminum chloride, aluminum hydroxychloride, and aluminum-zirconium compounds. Antibacterial methods inhibit bacteria or microorganisms that contribute to odor production; for this purpose, antibacterial agents such as triclosan, triclocarban, and benzalkonium chloride may be used. Deodorant methods decompose or adsorb odors, controlling the odor-causing proteins or fatty acids through physical or chemical methods. Body odor masking methods use fragrance to mask body odor. However, deodorant has limitations in controlling body odor, and the most common masking method, when using the wrong fragrance, often results in an unpleasant odor. Therefore, the choice of fragrance is crucial when choosing between deodorant or masking. Among the triggers for body odor, nonenal increases with age, isovaleric acid causes foot odor, and deacetyl causes head odor. In the past, body odor suppressant products used a combination of refreshing scents (citrus, mint) or baby powder scents to mask body odor. However, with the continuous establishment of new international regulations regarding the safety of fragrance compositions, there is a ongoing need to develop new fragrances that meet these requirements.

[0006] On the other hand, it is also known that techniques exist for masking odors by using highly volatile fragrance components that evaporate faster than the odor itself (Japanese Patent No. 2804993) or for combining specific odors with fragrances that have excellent sensory harmony (US Patent No. 2010-0254927). However, such techniques alone are insufficient to adequately remove body odor, therefore, there is a real need to develop new fragrance components that can effectively mask and remove body odor. Summary of the Invention

[0007] Technical issues

[0008] The problem to be solved by this disclosure is to provide a fragrance composition that can effectively remove body odor, preferably a specific body odor caused by nonenal, isovaleric acid or diacetyl.

[0009] In addition, the problem to be solved by this disclosure is to provide a fragrance composition that has excellent removal effect on body odor and excellent fragrance harmony.

[0010] Technical solution

[0011] To address the aforementioned issues, the inventors of this disclosure attempted to screen for fragrance substances with excellent effects in removing and masking body odor from numerous natural or synthetic fragrances, considering both aroma intensity and flavor harmony. In this regard, the inventors discovered that dimethyl hydroquinone can significantly mask and remove body odor caused by nonenal, isovaleric acid, diacetyl, etc. Furthermore, the inventors confirmed that when dimethyl hydroquinone is combined with fragrances, not only is the masking and removal effect of body odor significantly enhanced, but the flavor harmony is also significantly improved, thus completing this invention.

[0012] This disclosure provides a fragrance composition comprising dimethylhydroquinone as an active ingredient. Another name for dimethylhydroquinone is para-dimethylhydroquinone or 1,4-dimethoxybenzene, and its CAS number is 150-78-7. The fragrance composition effectively removes body odor. Preferably, the fragrance composition can be used to remove body odor. Preferably, body odor can refer to unpleasant smells produced by the body, such as head odor, body odor, or foot odor, but is not limited thereto.

[0013] In one aspect of this disclosure, unpleasant odors produced by the human body include components that trigger head odor such as isovaleric acid, pentanoic acid, isobutyric acid, heptanal, hexanoic acid, valeraldehyde, indole, or deacetyl. Additionally, components that trigger body odor include 2-nonenal, and components that trigger foot odor include isovaleric acid. The fragrance composition of this disclosure can effectively remove unpleasant odors generated by the aforementioned components that trigger head odor, body odor, or foot odor.

[0014] In one aspect of this disclosure, the fragrance composition may contain 0.1 to 10% by weight, preferably 0.2 to 2% by weight, and more preferably 0.3 to 1% by weight of the aforementioned dimethylhydroquinone, relative to the total weight of the composition. When the content of dimethylhydroquinone is less than 0.1% by weight, the removal effect on body odor may be insufficient; when it exceeds 10% by weight, excessive diffusion of dimethylhydroquinone may lead to a decrease in fragrance satisfaction.

[0015] In one aspect of this disclosure, the above-mentioned fragrance composition may also contain general fragrances in addition to dimethylhydroquinone.

[0016] In one aspect of this disclosure, the fragrances mentioned above, other than dimethylhydroquinone, may include one or more selected from the group consisting of methyl dihydrojasmonate, ethylene brassinolate, linalool, benzyl salicylate, benzyl acetate, tetramethylacetyl octahydronaphthalene, limonene, hexyl cinnamaldehyde, hexamethyl indaminozide, benzyl benzoate, acetyl hexamethyl tetrahydronaphthalene, isobutyl methyl tetrahydropyranol, linalool acetate, β-caryophyllene, ethyl linalool, hydroxycitronellol, ionone, citronellol, methyl anthranilate, cinnamyl alcohol, anisaldehyde, terpineol, and geraniol.

[0017] In one aspect of this disclosure, the fragrance, in addition to dimethylhydroquinone, may include one or more ingredients selected from the group consisting of methyl dihydrojasmonate, ethylene glycol brassinate, linalool, benzyl salicylate, benzyl acetate, and tetramethylacetyl octahydronaphthalene. Preferably, the fragrance may include two or more of the above-mentioned ingredients; more preferably, the fragrance may include all of the above-mentioned ingredients.

[0018] In addition, in one aspect of this disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may include one or more ingredients selected from the group consisting of orange oil, limonene, methyl dihydrojasmonic acid, and linalool. Preferably, the fragrance may include two or more of the above-mentioned ingredients; more preferably, the fragrance may include all of the above-mentioned ingredients.

[0019] In addition, in one aspect of this disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may include one or more selected from the group consisting of methyl dihydrojasmonic acid, linalool, hexylcinnamaldehyde, benzyl acetate, and hexamethylindenepyran. Preferably, the fragrance may include two or more of the above-mentioned components; more preferably, the fragrance may include all of the above-mentioned components.

[0020] In addition, in one aspect of this disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may include one or more ingredients selected from the group consisting of hexamethylindenepyran, benzyl benzoate, ethylene glycol brassinate, acetylhexamethyltetrahydronaphthalene, and isobutylmethyltetrahydropyranol. Preferably, the fragrance may include two or more of the above-mentioned ingredients; more preferably, the fragrance may include all of the above-mentioned ingredients.

[0021] In addition, in one aspect of this disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may include one or more selected from the group consisting of linalyl acetate, linalool, β-caryophyllene, and geraniol. Preferably, the fragrance may include two or more of the above-mentioned components; more preferably, the fragrance may include all of the above-mentioned components.

[0022] In one aspect of this disclosure, the fragrance, excluding dimethylhydroquinone, may be 10 to 99.9% by weight, preferably 15 to 99.9% by weight, and more preferably 20 to 99.9% by weight, relative to the total weight of the fragrance composition. When the fragrance, excluding dimethylhydroquinone, is less than 10% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition, the removal effect on body odor may be insufficient, and the fragrance preference may decrease. Furthermore, when the fragrance, excluding dimethylhydroquinone, exceeds 99.9% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition, the content of dimethylhydroquinone decreases relatively, and the removal effect on body odor may be insufficient.

[0023] In one aspect of this disclosure, the fragrance composition may contain a solvent. Preferably, the solvent may be included in the fragrance composition in the remainder besides dimethylhydroquinone and the fragrance, and the solvent may include dipropylene glycol, etc.

[0024] In one aspect of this disclosure, the weight ratio of dimethylhydroquinone to fragrance can be from 1:10 to 1000, preferably from 1:50 to 500, and more preferably from 1:100 to 300 (dimethylhydroquinone: fragrance). When the weight ratio of dimethylhydroquinone to fragrance is within the above range, the removal of body odor and the harmony of the fragrance are significantly superior.

[0025] In one aspect of this disclosure, the above-mentioned fragrance composition may be included in cosmetic compositions, personal care compositions, topical skin compositions, or daily product compositions.

[0026] In one aspect of this disclosure, the cosmetic composition may contain 0.001 to 10% by weight, preferably 0.005 to 5% by weight, and more preferably 0.01 to 3% by weight of the fragrance composition relative to the total weight of the cosmetic composition. When the fragrance composition is less than 0.001% by weight relative to the total weight of the cosmetic composition, the removal effect on body odor may be insufficient; when it exceeds 10% by weight, the dosage form stability may decrease.

[0027] In one aspect of this disclosure, the cosmetic composition may contain 0.000005 to 0.05% by weight, preferably 0.000025 to 0.025% by weight, and more preferably 0.00005 to 0.015% by weight of the dimethylhydroquinone, relative to the total weight of the cosmetic composition. When the amount of dimethylhydroquinone is less than 0.000005% by weight relative to the total weight of the cosmetic composition, the removal effect on body odor may be insufficient; when it exceeds 0.05% by weight, the fragrance preference may decrease.

[0028] Typically, cosmetic compositions contain large amounts of cationic surfactants for fragrance stabilization. However, such high levels of cationic surfactants or fragrance compounds pose a risk of plastic container breakage. This limits the maximum amount of fragrance that can be contained, potentially resulting in insufficient odor removal. In contrast, the fragrance composition disclosed herein contains dimethylhydroquinone as an active ingredient, thereby exhibiting significantly superior effectiveness in removing body odor without the problems associated with excessive use of the aforementioned cationic surfactants or fragrances.

[0029] In addition, the aforementioned personal care compositions, topical skin preparations, or daily care compositions may also include, in the same manner as the aforementioned cosmetic compositions, the aforementioned fragrance compositions within the aforementioned content range.

[0030] In one aspect of this disclosure, the cosmetic composition described above can be applied to the skin, hair, or scalp, for example, for use in perfumes, deodorants, or odor eliminators. The cosmetic composition described above can be a wash-off product or a leave-on product.

[0031] In addition, the above-mentioned personal care compositions can be used for skin care, hair care, body care, or foot care. For example, the skin care compositions may include toners, serums, lotions, eye creams, or face creams; hair care compositions may include shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, or hair serums; and body care or foot care compositions may include shower gels, body lotions, talcum powders, body sprays, soaps, or foot shampoo, but are not limited thereto.

[0032] In addition, the above-mentioned topical skin formulations may include, but are not limited to, ointments, emulsions, solubilizing phases, suspensions, emulsions, creams, gels, sprays, poultices, plasters, patches, or liquid plasters.

[0033] In addition, the above-mentioned consumer goods compositions may include, but are not limited to, kitchenware such as kitchen detergents, household goods, cleaning preparations, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, fragrances, waxes, emulsifiers or lubricants, etc.

[0034] In one aspect of this disclosure, the aforementioned cosmetic compositions, personal care compositions, topical skin preparations, or daily product compositions can be prepared by conventionally used methods. Furthermore, the aforementioned cosmetic compositions, personal care compositions, topical skin preparations, or daily product compositions may contain conventionally used auxiliary ingredients.

[0035] As used in this disclosure, the term 'removal' can refer to the chemical reaction between fragrance components and substances that cause body odor, thereby reducing the odor.

[0036] As used in this disclosure, the term "masking" can refer to the use of fragrance ingredients to prevent the detection of unpleasant or offensive odors. Furthermore, the aforementioned masking differs from deodorization through chemical reactions to remove odors; it can refer to techniques that utilize other fragrances to prevent the sensory perception of the causative substance.

[0037] As used in this disclosure, the term 'fragrance harmony' can refer to the fact that when dimethylhydroquinone is used in combination with other fragrances, it does not impair the fragrance sensory properties of the other fragrances, does not give the user an alien fragrance sensation, and provides excellent fragrance preference.

[0038] Furthermore, this disclosure provides a method for removing body odor, which includes the step of applying a fragrance composition containing dimethylhydroquinone as an active ingredient to a target body. The description of the fragrance composition can also be applied to the above-described method for removing body odor. That is, preferably, the cosmetic compositions, personal care compositions, topical skin preparations, or daily necessities compositions of this disclosure include the ingredients of this disclosure within the content limits permitted by the relevant regulations and standards of each country.

[0040] Invention Effects

[0041] The fragrance composition disclosed herein contains dimethylhydroquinone as an active ingredient, thereby exhibiting significantly superior effects in removing body odor, preferably that caused by nonenal, isovaleric acid, diacetyl, etc. Furthermore, the fragrance harmony between the dimethylhydroquinone contained in the above fragrance composition and the fragrance itself is also significantly excellent. Detailed Implementation

[0042] Hereinafter, in order to aid in understanding the present invention, detailed descriptions will be provided with examples and other illustrative details. However, the embodiments of the present invention can be modified in many different ways, and the scope of the present invention should not be construed as limited to the following embodiments. The embodiments of the present invention are provided to provide a more complete explanation of the present invention to those skilled in the art.

[0043] Manufacturing of spice base

[0044] The ingredients listed in Table 1 below were mixed at 25°C for 10 minutes in their respective specific amounts, thereby producing five flavor bases for flavorings 1 to 5.

[0045] [Table 1]

[0046] Example of manufacturing a flavoring composition

[0047] A fragrance composition was prepared by mixing any one of the fragrance bases from fragrances 1 to 5 and dimethylhydroquinone at 25°C for 10 minutes. The fragrance composition was prepared such that it contains 99.5% by weight of any one of the fragrance bases from fragrances 1 to 5 relative to the total weight of the fragrance composition, and 0.5% by weight of dimethylhydroquinone relative to the total weight of the fragrance composition.

[0048] Manufacturing of Shampoo Compositions (Examples and Comparative Examples)

[0049] Shampoo compositions comprising any one of the fragrance bases 1 to 5 and / or dimethylhydroquinone as active ingredients were manufactured as Examples 1 to 2 and Comparative Examples 1 to 4. The compositions of Examples 1 to 2 and Comparative Examples 1 to 4 are shown in Table 2 below. In the method for manufacturing the above shampoo compositions, the fragrance bases and / or dimethylhydroquinone were added to an unfragranted shampoo base in the proportions shown in Table 2 and mixed by stirring at 25°C for 10 minutes.

[0050] [Table 2]

[0051] Experimental Example 1: Evaluation of Body Odor Removal Rate

[0052] Odor removal rate was evaluated using a detection tube test method at 24°C and 45% humidity. In the above evaluation, 50g each of a mixed solution prepared by mixing the shampoo composition of the examples or comparative examples with purified water was used, wherein the content of the shampoo composition of the examples or comparative examples was 10% by weight and the content of purified water was 90% by weight. As odor components, 0.1g of a mixed solution comprising the components listed in Table 3 below and dipropylene glycol was used, wherein the content of the components listed in Table 3 below was a total of 10% by weight, and the remaining 90% by weight was dipropylene glycol.

[0053] [Table 3]

[0054] A mixed solution comprising the compositions of the above-described examples or comparative examples was placed together with the odor component into a 1L chamber, and a detection tube test was performed. In the detection tube test, a gas detection tube (No. 81L, GASTEC, Japan) was used. After 30 minutes, the gas was inhaled for 1 minute using a gas collector (GV-100S, GASTEC, Japan), and the change in the colorimetric reagent within the detection tube was measured in PPM. The deodorization rate evaluation results for Comparative Examples 2 to 4 and Example 2 are shown in Table 4 below.

[0055] [Table 4]

[0056] On the other hand, Comparative Example 1, which excludes fragrances and dimethylhydroquinone, showed a deodorization rate of 0%. Additionally, Example 1, which excludes fragrances and includes only dimethylhydroquinone, showed a deodorization rate of 76%.

[0057] As seen in Comparative Examples 2 to 4 above, even with increased fragrance content, the increase in deodorization rate is negligible. Furthermore, applying excessively high fragrance concentrations beyond experimental conditions may compromise product stability or cause it to spoil over time, increasing product costs and thus presenting limitations.

[0058] Conversely, the deodorization rate of Example 1, which included dimethylhydroquinone (76%), was significantly higher than that of Comparative Examples 2 to 4, which included various fragrances (45% to 57%). Furthermore, it was confirmed that, as shown in Example 2, the deodorization rate was significantly improved when dimethylhydroquinone was combined with fragrances.

[0059] Experiment Example 2: Sensory evaluation of body odor masking and fragrance harmony

[0060] Sensory evaluations were conducted on body odor masking and fragrance harmony for Comparative Example 2 and Example 2 described above. Fifteen evaluators participated in the sensory evaluation, using a 5-point scale to assess body odor masking and fragrance harmony. The evaluation results are shown in Tables 5 and 6 below.

[0061] [Table 5]

[0062] [Table 6]

[0063] It was confirmed that, as shown in Example 1 above, when only dimethylhydroquinone was included as the active ingredient, the fragrance satisfaction decreased due to the excessive aroma dispersibility of dimethylhydroquinone itself. Conversely, it was confirmed that, as shown in Example 2 above, when dimethylhydroquinone was incorporated into the fragrance as the active ingredient, the masking effect of body odor and the harmony of the fragrance were significantly improved.
