Description

Technical area

[0001] The disclosure relates to a computer and a hardware parameter configuration procedure for it, and in particular to a computer and a hardware parameter configuration procedure for it when the computer is operated in a unified extensible firmware interface basic input / output system (UEFI BIOS) mode. State of the art

[0002] Electronic devices, such as a variety of computers, are generally equipped with purpose-built processors or processing units to not only operate accurately but also to process data efficiently. When the computer is turned on, a basic input / output system (BIOS) loads to ensure that the computer's essential hardware structure is ready for initialization before the computer's operating system can take over. The traditional BIOS is generally a 16-bit-based system, which appears outdated when used with more advanced processors / processing units that are 32-bit or even 64-bit-based. Therefore, using the traditional BIOS and these processors / processing units in the same computer can limit the potential performance of these processors / processing units. To solve the problem of inconsistency between the BIOS and the processors / processing units, the UEFI BIOS was developed. When the computer is operating in UEFI BIOS mode, hardware parameter configurations such as the central processing unit (CPU) frequency and CPU factor can be modified and saved as a hardware profile, which can be shared between computer users. This allows users to download other users' hardware parameters, enabling them to utilize similar hardware settings to fully exploit their computers' hardware capabilities. Furthermore, by downloading other hardware profiles, users can evaluate overclocking possibilities.

[0003] However, because computers can differ in their hardware architecture, simply loading hardware profiles from others will not necessarily optimize every computer. Furthermore, loading other hardware profiles without any protection mechanism can expose computers to the risk of damage, as the loaded hardware parameters from the other profiles may be unsuitable for the computer due to its different hardware architecture.

[0004] US 2012 O 208 633 A1 discloses a hardware parameter configuration method in an extensible firmware interface-based input / output system mode, wherein the hardware parameter configuration method comprises: reading a currently existing hardware profile, which contains a plurality of currently existing hardware parameters; reading a hardware profile yet to be loaded, wherein the hardware profile yet to be loaded contains a plurality of hardware parameters yet to be loaded, and each of the hardware parameters yet to be loaded corresponds to the respective currently existing hardware parameters; comparing the currently existing hardware parameters with their corresponding hardware parameters yet to be loaded to generate a comparison result; and displaying the currently existing hardware parameters, the hardware parameters yet to be loaded, and the comparison result.and loading the hardware parameters yet to be loaded into the hardware units upon receipt of a confirmation signal, in order to replace the currently existing hardware parameters. Summary

[0005] The problem is solved by the subject matter of the independent patent claims.

[0006] To configure multiple hardware units of a computer in a unified extensible firmware interface-based basic input / output system mode, the disclosure provides a hardware parameter configuration procedure. The steps of the hardware parameter configuration procedure begin with reading a currently existing hardware profile (in other words, a currently loaded hardware profile), which contains several currently existing hardware parameters, and reading a hardware profile yet to be loaded (in other words, a hardware profile that is not loaded and can be loaded later), wherein the hardware profile yet to be loaded contains several hardware parameters yet to be loaded, and each of the hardware parameters yet to be loaded corresponds to the respective currently existing hardware parameters. The hardware configuration process then compares the currently available hardware parameters with their corresponding hardware parameters yet to be loaded to generate a comparison result. This result is displayed via a graphical interface, showing the currently available hardware parameters, the hardware parameters yet to be loaded, and the comparison result. Therefore, based on the comparison result, a user can determine whether the hardware parameters yet to be loaded should be loaded. The hardware parameter configuration process can then instruct the computer to load the hardware parameters to the hardware units to replace the currently available hardware parameters once the computer receives a confirmation signal from the user.

[0007] Furthermore, the disclosure discloses a computer comprising multiple hardware units, each operated with several currently available hardware parameters, one of which is a central processing unit (CPU). The CPU is configured to execute the steps beginning with reading a currently available hardware profile containing multiple hardware parameters, followed by reading a hardware profile yet to be loaded, which contains multiple hardware parameters, each corresponding to a currently available hardware parameter. The CPU is then configured to execute the steps of comparing the currently available hardware parameters with their corresponding parameters yet to be loaded and generating a comparison result. The CPU then processes the currently available parameters, the hardware parameters yet to be loaded, and the comparison result, displaying them via a graphical interface. Finally, the CPU is configured to load the remaining hardware parameters to the hardware units, replacing the currently available hardware parameters, once the confirmation signal is received. Detailed description

[0008] The disclosure provides a computer and a hardware parameter configuration procedure for it for configuring multiple hardware units in a computer which is operated in an Extensible Firmware Basic Input / Output System (Unified Extensible Firmware Basic Input / Output System, UEFI BIOS) mode.

[0009] It will be on Fig. Reference is made to Figure 1, which is a simplified block diagram of a computer 20 according to one embodiment of the disclosure. The computer 20 has several hardware units 22. In one embodiment, the hardware unit 22 is hardware installed on a mainboard (motherboard) of the computer 20, such as a central processing unit (CPU), memory, a graphics card, or a storage device. In other embodiments, the hardware units 22 may refer to peripheral devices of the computer 20. The CPU of the computer 20 is configured to perform the hardware parameter configuration procedure in UEFI BIOS mode to load appropriate hardware parameters to the hardware units 22. The aforementioned storage device may be a hard disk, cache memory, or a disk array (i.e., a storage device). This could be a redundant array of inexpensive disk RAID or a pluggable memory card.

[0010] It will be on Fig. 2 Reference is made to a flowchart of a hardware parameter configuration procedure according to an embodiment of the disclosure.

[0011] The procedure involves instructing a CPU to read an existing hardware profile containing several currently available hardware parameters (step S200). The procedure further involves instructing the CPU to then read a hardware profile yet to be loaded, which also contains several hardware parameters yet to be loaded (step S300). It should be noted that each of the hardware parameters yet to be loaded can correspond to the respective currently available hardware parameters. The storage device in the computer can be configured to store one or more pre-transferred hardware profiles. At least one of the hardware profiles can be displayed and selected via a graphical user interface before the hardware parameters in the selected hardware profile are actually loaded into the computer's hardware units. In step S300, the CPU can select a hardware profile specified by the user as the hardware profile to load before accessing the storage device to read that specific hardware profile.

[0012] The currently available hardware parameters and the hardware parameters yet to be loaded can correspond to the computer's 22 hardware units. For example, these hardware parameters can be a CPU model, a CPU frequency, a CPU factor, a CPU operating voltage, a memory operating frequency, a memory operating voltage, and / or a video card factor.

[0013] In addition to the hardware parameters yet to be loaded, the hardware profile yet to be loaded may also include a motherboard make and model, a basic input / output system version, a file save time, a storage capacity, an ambient temperature, a CPU temperature, and a fan speed. The CPU model and motherboard make may be represented as a sequence of numbers and characters.

[0014] After reading the hardware parameters to be loaded, the CPU can compare them with their corresponding currently available hardware parameters to generate a comparison result (step S400). In one embodiment, the CPU can individually compare each of the hardware parameters to be loaded with its corresponding currently available hardware parameter and determine whether the hardware parameters to be loaded are larger than the currently available hardware parameters to generate the comparison result. The comparison result, the currently available hardware parameters, and the hardware parameters to be loaded can be displayed in the graphical interface by the CPU, which is operating in UEFI BIOS mode (step S500).In one embodiment, the comparison result between the currently existing hardware parameters and the hardware parameters yet to be loaded can be represented numerically or even graphically, such as by bar charts.

[0015] Fig. 3 is a flowchart of step S400 according to one embodiment of the disclosure. Fig. 3. The comparison result can have at least one increasing display element.

[0016] In step S400, as mentioned previously, the CPU is configured to individually compare the currently existing hardware parameters with their corresponding hardware parameters yet to be loaded in the computer (step S410), and to determine whether at least one of the currently existing hardware parameters is greater than the corresponding hardware parameter yet to be loaded (step S420). For example, the CPU can compare the CPU factor in the currently existing hardware parameters with the CPU factor in the hardware parameters yet to be loaded. The CPU factor in the currently existing hardware parameters and the CPU factor in the hardware parameters yet to be loaded are referred to below, respectively, as a currently existing CPU factor and a CPU factor yet to be loaded. Other hardware parameters are similar to the hardware parameters mentioned above, so these similarities are not repeated here.

[0017] If at least one of the currently existing hardware parameters is larger than the corresponding hardware parameters yet to be loaded, the CPU can generate the incrementing indicator for the currently existing hardware parameter that is larger than the corresponding hardware parameter yet to be loaded (step S430). Conversely, if at least one of the currently existing hardware parameters is smaller than the corresponding hardware parameters yet to be loaded, the CPU can also generate the incrementing indicator for the corresponding hardware parameter yet to be loaded that is larger than the corresponding currently existing hardware parameter (step S440). If the currently existing hardware parameters and the hardware parameters yet to be loaded are the same, it is possible not to generate the incrementing indicator.

[0018] Assuming that the currently available video card factor is 27 and the video card factor to be loaded is 26, the CPU can determine in step S420 that the currently available video card factor is greater than the video card factor to be loaded. Therefore, in step S430, the increasing indicator for the currently available video card factor is generated. If the currently available CPU factor is 34, whereas the CPU factor to be loaded is 37, the CPU will determine in step S420 that the CPU factor to be loaded is greater than its currently available counterpart. Therefore, the increasing indicator for the CPU factor to be loaded is displayed in step S440.

[0019] It will be on Fig. 4 Reference is made to a schematic diagram of a graphical interface 30 according to an embodiment of the disclosure.

[0020] The graphical user interface 30 can display a menu 40 and several display grids 50, which correspond to the hardware parameters yet to be loaded. The graphical user interface 30 allows computer users to interact with the system using keyboards or touchscreens when the computer is operating in UEFI BIOS mode. The menu 40 can list more than one hardware profile 42 stored in the computer, and one of these hardware profiles can be selected by the graphical user interface 30 as the hardware profile 44 yet to be loaded.

[0021] Each display grid 50 corresponds to one of the currently available hardware parameters and one of the hardware parameters yet to be loaded. More precisely, each display grid 50 can contain an element name 52, a currently available parameter value (represented by the graphical symbol 54), a graphical symbol 56 representing the hardware parameter value yet to be loaded, and the ascending display element 58. Additionally, the graphical interface 30 can also include a warning message area 60 in which various warning messages can be displayed.

[0022] Element name 52 can display "the CPU factor," where the currently existing value is 34 and the corresponding graphical symbol 54 is a long bar representing the value 34. Meanwhile, the CPU factor value yet to be loaded might be 37, and the corresponding graphical symbol 56 could represent the value 37 as another long bar. It should be noted that graphical symbols 54 for the currently existing hardware parameter values and graphical symbols 56 for the values of the hardware parameter yet to be loaded can take the form of pie charts, radar charts, or other commonly used diagrams for displaying numerical values. The ascending indicator element 58, for example, can be an upward-pointing triangle or an arrow.

[0023] It will be on Fig. 5 Reference is made to a flowchart of step S400, which is in Fig. Figure 3 is shown according to one embodiment of the disclosure. In this embodiment, the comparison result can have at least one difference indicator element.

[0024] After the CPU has executed steps S410 to S440, it can determine the difference between the currently available hardware parameters and the hardware parameters yet to be loaded by subtracting the latter from the former (step S450). It should be noted that step S450 can be combined with step S410 or step S420. The CPU can then determine whether the difference is non-zero (step S460). If the difference is not non-zero (or if there is a difference between the currently available hardware parameters and the hardware parameters yet to be loaded), the difference can be displayed as the difference indicator (S470).To continue the above example, the difference between the currently available CPU factor and the CPU factor yet to be loaded can be 3 (=37-34), the difference can be represented as the difference indicator and next displayed next to the graphic symbol 56 for the hardware parameters yet to be loaded and / or the rising indicator 58.

[0025] If at least one of the currently available hardware parameters is greater than the hardware parameters yet to be loaded, the comparison result may result in the display of a downward-pointing indicator. This indicator could be, for example, a downward-pointing triangle or an arrow.

[0026] In another embodiment, the comparison result can lead to at least one optimization indicator. In step S400, the CPU can further determine whether the hardware parameters yet to be loaded are better than the currently available hardware parameters, based on the subject of the hardware parameters and the difference mentioned above. For example, considering the CPU frequency, if the difference between the multiple occurrences of the CPU frequency in the hardware parameters yet to be loaded and the currently available hardware parameters is positive, this indicates that the hardware parameters yet to be loaded could provide better performance when loaded into the computer. As such, the optimization indicator for the CPU factor yet to be loaded can be generated. For example, if one considers the CPU operating voltage, if the CPU operating voltage in the currently available hardware parameters is lower than the CPU operating voltage in the hardware parameters yet to be loaded, it is possible not to generate an optimization indicator for the corresponding hardware parameter, because the lower CPU operating voltage generally corresponds to lower energy consumption by the computer.

[0027] It should also be noted that the rising indicator 58, the falling indicator, the difference indicator and the optimization indicator can be represented in words, symbols or graphic symbols.

[0028] After the comparison result is displayed along with the aforementioned indicators, users can further specify whether hardware profile 44, which contains the hardware parameters yet to be loaded, should be loaded onto the hardware units. Additionally, users can select a different hardware profile 42, which contains a different set of hardware parameters yet to be loaded to generate a different comparison result.

[0029] If the hardware profile containing the hardware parameters yet to be loaded is identified as the one to replace the currently installed hardware parameters, the graphical interface may include a confirmation button that can be pressed using the keyboard, mouse, or touchscreen. This button can trigger the generation of an acknowledgment signal. At the point when the comparison results are displayed, the CPU can then determine whether any such acknowledgment signal has been sent and received (step S600). Upon receiving the acknowledgment signal, the CPU can load the selected hardware parameters into hardware units 22 to replace the currently installed hardware parameters (step S700).More precisely, the CPU can access the memory device to read the hardware parameters yet to be loaded into the computer before they are loaded to the hardware units 22. For example, the CPU operating voltage can be changed to the CPU operating voltage specified in the selected hardware parameters yet to be loaded into the computer when the memory operating voltage is changed as a result of the CPU loading the hardware parameters yet to be loaded to the hardware units 22.

[0030] Although the hardware parameters yet to be loaded have been loaded onto the hardware units 22, these hardware parameters are not necessarily suitable for the operation of the computer. For example, the loaded hardware parameters may exceed the upper limit of the computer, so that loading the hardware parameters could cause damage to the part of the computer 20. Before loading these selected hardware parameters, the method according to the disclosure can offer a protection mechanism that ensures that incidents causing damage to the part of the computer can be minimized.

[0031] It will be on Fig. 6 Reference is made to the flowchart of such a protection mechanism (step S700) according to an embodiment of the disclosure.

[0032] The CPU can first determine whether the CPU model to be loaded is the same as the currently present CPU model (step S710). If the CPU model to be loaded is the same as the currently present CPU model, the CPU can load the hardware parameters (or the hardware profile) stored in the memory device directly to the hardware units to replace the currently present ones (step S720).

[0033] Conversely, if the CPU model in the hardware parameters yet to be loaded is not the same as the currently installed CPU model, the CPU can further determine whether the CPU is frequency-locked (step S730). If the CPU is not frequency-locked, this indicates that the CPU of computer 20 allows adjustments to the CPU frequency and CPU factor. The selected hardware parameters associated with this CPU model can then be loaded into the hardware units. However, even if the CPU is not frequency-locked, operating it with the hardware parameters for the different CPU model can still expose the CPU to unexpected damage. Therefore, the CPU can issue a warning message to the computer user (step S750) before step S720 is actually performed to load the hardware parameters yet to be loaded from the storage device to the hardware units. The CPU warning message, which indicates an inconsistency in the CPU model as one of the hardware parameters, can be displayed in warning message area 60, in the form of an audible warning signal or by means of the illumination of light-emitting elements, in order to inform the computer user or to get their attention.

[0034] When the CPU is frequency-locked, it is configured to determine if the CPU frequency yet to be loaded is lower than a frequency-locked upper bound of the CPU, which may be the currently available CPU frequency (step S740). If the CPU frequency yet to be loaded is lower than the frequency-locked upper bound, the CPU can load this specific CPU frequency to the hardware units (i.e., to the CPU itself). Steps S720 and S740 can still be performed to output the CPU warning message while the hardware parameters are being loaded from the storage device to the computer.

[0035] On the other hand, if the CPU frequency yet to be loaded is higher than the currently available CPU frequency, loading the new frequency could damage the CPU. Therefore, the CPU may be restricted to operating at the currently available frequency to protect it from damage. However, the CPU can still load other hardware parameters besides the CPU frequency to the hardware units to replace the corresponding currently available parameters (step S760). Although the CPU does not necessarily load the specific CPU frequency into the computer that exceeds the frequency-locked upper limit, another type of CPU alarm message may be generated.

[0036] In addition to the operation of the CPU, the operation of the memory may be protected in this disclosure. It is based on Fig.7 Reference is made to a flowchart of a protection mechanism offered for the memory according to an embodiment of the disclosure.

[0037] The currently available hardware parameters and the corresponding hardware parameters yet to be loaded also have a memory identification (ID), a memory operating frequency, and an extreme memory profile (XMP) flag. The CPU can determine whether there is an inconsistency in the memory ID and XMP flag between the currently available hardware parameters and those yet to be loaded, and whether the currently available memory operating frequency is lower than the memory operating frequency yet to be loaded (S770). If this is the case, the memory-related hardware parameters might not be suitable for the current memory. Accordingly, the CPU can issue a memory warning message (step S780) to alert the computer user. The storage warning message can also be displayed in the warning message area, if the storage warning message can be in text form, in the form of an acoustic warning signal or by emitting light from light-emitting elements to attract the attention of people.

[0038] On the other hand, if either the memory ID is consistent in the currently existing hardware parameters and the hardware parameters yet to be loaded, the XMP flag is the same in both hardware parameter categories, or the memory operating frequency yet to be loaded is not greater than the currently existing memory operating frequency, the CPU can directly access the memory device to read the hardware parameters yet to be loaded to the hardware units in order to replace the currently existing ones (step S720).

[0039] Meanwhile, each of the hardware units can be linked to one of these corresponding predefined safety zones. If the hardware parameters yet to be loaded exceed the safety zone, a different warning message can be issued. Such a warning regarding the hardware parameters yet to be loaded can be clearly displayed in step S400.

[0040] In summary, the hardware parameter setting method according to the disclosure can determine whether loading a different set of hardware parameters to replace the currently present ones is advantageous before the hardware parameters are actually loaded into the computer. Furthermore, in UEFI BIOS mode, the hardware parameters yet to be loaded can be read from the storage device in the computer to generate a comparison between the hardware parameters yet to be loaded and those currently present. The comparison result can indicate whether loading the hardware parameters yet to be loaded is advantageous for the computer or even suitable for the computer's operation. The method of this disclosure can also cause the CPU to operate without exceeding the limits associated with the frequency-locked CPU, thus preventing damage to the CPU.
