Abstract
Description
[0001] The invention relates to a motor vehicle simulation system for simulating a virtual environment of at least a portion of a virtual motor vehicle. The motor vehicle simulation system comprises a simulation unit configured to generate images of a virtual environment and a head-mounted display device configured to display the images generated by the simulation unit. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for adjusting such a motor vehicle simulation system.
[0002] It is known from the prior art to use head-mounted display devices, such as VR headsets, AR headsets, VR helmets, or other types of head-mounted displays, to simulate virtual environments. Advantageously, they can also be used to simulate motor vehicles, making it possible, for example, to inspect any motor vehicle or motor vehicle model with any conceivable equipment variant at a car dealership through a simulation of the corresponding vehicle, without the car dealer having to have all the desired vehicles or models in stock.
[0003] While a user is wearing VR headsets and viewing a virtual environment, they cannot visually perceive their real surroundings. This can lead to problems with orientation for the user, especially if they move around in their real environment during the simulation. While it is possible to remove the VR headset at any time or, for example, to display the real environment image, such actions would interrupt the simulation.
[0004] DE 101 37 841 A1 describes a system and method for the subjective evaluation of a vehicle design within a virtual environment using virtual reality. The system comprises a computer system for digitally creating a virtual environment, in particular a digital motor vehicle, with a virtual human placed in the interior. Furthermore, the system comprises a scalable physical property, which may include a seat, a floor, a foot control, and a steering wheel. The property can be adjusted so that it is characteristic of the same dimensional relationships as the digital vehicle design for the evaluation.
[0005] DE 601 29 059 T2 describes a 3D visual presentation method and apparatus for a car simulator. For this purpose, a system may comprise a seat with a movable seat surface and a tiltable backrest. Furthermore, a user can, for example, change the inclination of the backrest relative to the seat surface. Image generation means can take this new inclination into account when simulating a virtual environment with a virtual seat and simulate a displacement of the virtual backrest in the displayed images.
[0006] The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a motor vehicle simulation arrangement and a method for adjusting a motor vehicle simulation arrangement, which make it possible to improve the orientation of a user in his real environment when wearing a head-mounted display device.
[0007] This object is achieved by a motor vehicle simulation system and a method for adjusting a motor vehicle simulation system according to the independent claims. Advantageous embodiments of the invention can be found in the dependent claims.
[0008] The motor vehicle simulation arrangement according to the invention for simulating a virtual environment with at least part of a virtual motor vehicle comprises a simulation unit designed to generate images of a virtual environment, a head-mounted display device designed to display the images generated by the simulation unit, and at least one real motor vehicle element. Furthermore, the motor vehicle simulation arrangement is designed to display at least one virtual motor vehicle element corresponding to the at least one real motor vehicle element in the images of the virtual environment. Furthermore, the motor vehicle simulation arrangement comprises an adjustment device coupled to the at least one real motor vehicle element and designed to adjust the position of the at least one motor vehicle element to a plurality of different adjustment positions. The motor vehicle simulation arrangement is further designed to automatically adjust the position of the at least one real motor vehicle element to a predetermined one of the plurality of adjustment positions by means of the adjustment device in such a way that the position of the at least one real motor vehicle element in relation to a predetermined reference object corresponds to the virtual position of the at least one virtual motor vehicle element in relation to a predetermined virtual reference object.
[0009] The invention is based on several findings. Firstly, the degree of immersion in the simulation of the virtual environment of at least a portion of a virtual motor vehicle can be increased by allowing a user to experience the virtual environment not only visually, but also haptically and tangibly by providing at least one real motor vehicle element in its real environment. For example, a driver's seat or a steering wheel can be provided as a real motor vehicle element, allowing a user to sit in the driver's seat during the simulation and, for example, to touch and feel the real steering wheel during the simulation of a motor vehicle interior. However, if the real environment and the virtually displayed environment are not coordinated, this may not only lead to the user being irritated by this discrepancy, but may also lead to the user possibly injuring themselves because they bump into real vehicle elements when trying to reach for them, or, for example, miss the real seat when trying to sit down if the displayed virtual environment does not match the real environment and the user cannot see the real environment when the display device is worn on the head.
[0010] The invention advantageously solves these problems by displaying the virtual motor vehicle element corresponding to the real motor vehicle element in the images of the virtual environment, thereby advantageously allowing a user to also see the real elements present in the virtual environment. Furthermore, the invention enables the real motor vehicle element to be automatically adjusted in its position so that it corresponds to the position of the displayed virtual motor vehicle element. This is particularly relevant when the motor vehicle simulation arrangement is intended to simulate various motor vehicles that then also differ in the arrangement of their respective motor vehicle components. For example, a seat can be adjusted to a height that corresponds to the perceived height of a virtually displayed seat, or the distances between different vehicle elements can be adjusted to correspond to the distances of the corresponding virtual vehicle elements displayed in the virtual environment. The relative positions of the real components to the reference object are thus identical to the relative positions of the corresponding virtual components with respect to the reference object in the virtual environment. The real and virtual reference object can, for example, be a coordinate system defined in the respective environment, in which case the two coordinate systems of the real and virtual environment can be converted into one another, preferably by means of a congruence mapping that preserves the sense of rotation. The reference objects can also represent corresponding reference planes, e.g.in the real environment, the ground or floor on which the real motor vehicle elements are arranged, which then corresponds, for example, to a displayed virtual motor vehicle interior floor.
[0011] This 1:1 mapping of the real components to the corresponding virtual components advantageously allows users to visually perceive their real environment even through the virtual environment, allowing them to reach for real vehicle elements without missing them or bumping into them. This significantly improves the user's ability to orient themselves in their real environment, even when wearing a head-mounted display, and reduces the risk of injury.
[0012] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the at least one real motor vehicle element represents at least one motor vehicle element from the group consisting of driver's seat, passenger seat, bench seat, steering wheel, pedals, and gearshift lever. These real motor vehicle elements allow the motor vehicle simulation to be provided not only visually but also physically, allowing a user to fully experience the simulation of a part of a motor vehicle. It may also be provided that a user can carry out a driving simulation of the virtual motor vehicle, i.e., a simulated journey, by operating the aforementioned real components. The ability to operate these real components is, in turn, only made possible by the user being able to see them in their exact location in the virtual environment.
[0013] In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the simulation unit is designed to define, when generating images of the virtual environment, a perspective emanating from a virtual location, from which the virtual environment is displayed, in particular depending on a current position of the head-mounted display device. This advantageously enables the displayed perspective to move with the head movements of the user wearing the display device on their head. In this way, the user can control the perspective from which they would like to have the part of the motor vehicle displayed, namely by simply moving their head in a corresponding direction.
[0014] In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the motor vehicle simulation arrangement has a detection means designed to determine at least one relative position between the head-mounted display device and the real motor vehicle element, wherein the simulation unit is designed to take the determined relative position into account during image generation such that the virtual motor vehicle element is displayed at a location in the virtual environment that has a relative position to the virtual standard that corresponds to the relative position between the head-mounted display device and the real motor vehicle element. In other words, if the user, for example, has a specific position with respect to the real motor vehicle element, this relative position is implemented in the same way for the virtual location with respect to the virtual motor vehicle element in the virtual environment. The real vehicle elements and the user's perspective are thus advantageously transferred 1:1 into the virtual environment. This allows the user to precisely capture their own orientation, alignment, and distance to the individual real control elements through the corresponding representation in the virtual environment. Reaching for a virtually represented steering wheel as a virtual vehicle element, for example, would immediately result in the real steering wheel being captured as a real vehicle element. Unwanted collisions with real objects with a head-mounted display device can thus be reduced to a minimum.
[0015] In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the position of at least one real motor vehicle element is adjustable in, in particular, three different spatial directions. This advantageously provides extensive adjustment options for adapting the real motor vehicle elements to the respective positions of their virtual counterparts. If, for example, a driver's seat, a passenger seat and a steering wheel are provided as real motor vehicle elements, it is particularly advantageous if the seats can be adjusted in height, in their distance from one another and also forwards and backwards, i.e. with the driver's seat towards the steering wheel arranged in front of the driver's seat or against this direction. The steering wheel can also be designed to be height-adjustable and can additionally be adjustable in two further spatial directions.A key aspect of the adjustment options for the real vehicle elements is that they are at least adjustable in height and, if more than one vehicle element is provided, that the vehicle elements are adjustable in their relative position to one another. This does not mean that all vehicle elements must be adjustable in all three spatial directions to achieve this. If the simulation arrangement simulates different vehicle models one after the other in the virtual environment, these numerous adjustment options advantageously make it possible to adapt the real vehicle elements to the arrangement of the virtual vehicle elements of the currently displayed vehicle models.
[0016] In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the real reference object represents another real motor vehicle element from the group, and the virtual reference object represents the corresponding virtual motor vehicle element in the virtual environment. Thus, if multiple real motor vehicle elements are provided, their relative positions to one another are advantageously set identically in the virtual environment.
[0017] In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, at least one first simulation data group is provided on the simulation unit, wherein the simulation unit is designed to generate the images of the virtual environment based on the first simulation data group. Furthermore, a predetermined assignment is provided on the motor vehicle simulation arrangement, by means of which a first standard position of the at least one real motor vehicle element is assigned to the at least one first simulation data group, wherein the motor vehicle simulation arrangement is designed to set the real motor vehicle element to a position determined by the standard position assigned by the assignment of the first simulation data group for a simulation of the virtual environment based on the first simulation data group.
[0018] The first simulation data group can, for example, correspond to the simulation data for a specific motor vehicle model. This motor vehicle model has a specific arrangement of its interior components relative to one another, such as seat spacing, seat heights, steering wheel position, etc. The information about the arrangement of the individual vehicle components of this specific vehicle model can be assigned to the corresponding standard positions for setting the real motor vehicle components according to the predetermined assignment, so that these are automatically set to the standard positions and thus then correspond in their arrangement to the arrangement of the virtual motor vehicle elements in the virtual environment for the corresponding motor vehicle model. Such an assignment can, for example, be stored for numerous motor vehicle models. For example,If, before the simulation is carried out, a motor vehicle model is first selected from several to be simulated, the real motor vehicle elements can be adjusted to their standard positions corresponding to the selected motor vehicle model in accordance with the assignment, in particular before the simulation begins. This advantageously makes it possible to adjust the real motor vehicle elements to the positions corresponding to the simulation for the simulation of numerous different motor vehicle models. A user can therefore have many motor vehicle models simulated, and it is always guaranteed that the user can orientate themselves safely in their real environment, despite wearing the display device on their head.
[0019] In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the motor vehicle simulation arrangement has an adjustment device, in particular a manual one, which is assigned to the real motor vehicle element. The adjustment device is configured such that the position of the real motor vehicle element can be adjusted by the user using the adjustment device. This advantageously enables manual readjustment of the automatically set standard positions. Despite the automatic adjustment option of the vehicle elements, the user is not thus patronized.
[0020] However, in order to ensure that the user can orientate himself safely in his real environment despite his manually made settings, which for example deviate from the automatically set standard positions, it is a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention if the motor vehicle simulation arrangement is designed to detect a setting of the real motor vehicle element made by the user and to adapt the images of the virtual environment during image generation as a function of the detected setting such that the position of the at least one real motor vehicle element in relation to the predetermined reference object corresponds to or is identical to the virtual position of the at least one virtual motor vehicle element in relation to the predetermined virtual reference object when displaying the virtual environment. For example, if the user manually adjusts their seat to a different position, these changes in the virtual environment can be taken into account by adjusting the position of the virtual seat. The real vehicle elements can have adjustment options that are also found in conventional vehicles. For example, the seat can be adjusted forward or backward, its height, the backrest can be adjusted, the steering wheel height can be adjusted, and the like. Therefore, if a user makes such adjustments starting from the standard position, the virtual representation advantageously adapts accordingly.
[0021] Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for configuring a motor vehicle simulation system to simulate a virtual environment with at least part of a virtual motor vehicle by means of the motor vehicle simulation system. A simulation unit of the motor vehicle simulation system generates images of a virtual environment, which are displayed by a head-mounted display device of the motor vehicle simulation system. The motor vehicle simulation system further comprises a real motor vehicle element, and the motor vehicle simulation system displays at least one virtual motor vehicle element corresponding to the at least one real motor vehicle element in the images of the virtual environment. The position of the at least one real motor vehicle element can be adjusted to a plurality of different adjustment positions by means of an adjustment device, wherein the motor vehicle simulation arrangement automatically adjusts the position of the at least one real motor vehicle element to a predetermined one of the plurality of adjustment positions by means of the adjustment device in such a way that the position of the at least one real motor vehicle element in relation to a predetermined reference object corresponds to the virtual position of the at least one virtual motor vehicle element in relation to a predetermined virtual reference object.
[0022] The features, feature combinations, and their advantages mentioned for the motor vehicle simulation system according to the invention and its embodiments apply equally to the method according to the invention. Furthermore, the specific features mentioned in connection with the motor vehicle simulation system according to the invention and its embodiments enable the further development of the method according to the invention through additional method steps.
[0023] Further advantages, features and details of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment and from the drawing.
[0024] The single figure shows a schematic representation of a motor vehicle simulation arrangement 10 for simulating a virtual environment 12 with at least part of a virtual motor vehicle according to an exemplary embodiment of the invention. The motor vehicle simulation arrangement 10 has a simulation unit 14 and a head-mounted display device designed, for example, as VR glasses 16. The simulation unit 14 generates images of a virtual environment 12, which are preferably displayed as a 3D image by the VR glasses 16. For this purpose, the simulation unit 14 can generate one image for the right eye and one image for the left eye, which are then displayed, for example, on two separate displays of the VR glasses 16, one for the right eye and one for the left eye, so that a three-dimensional representation is produced for the user.
[0025] Even if the simulation unit 14 is shown separately here, it can certainly also be part of the VR glasses 16 themselves. The motor vehicle simulation arrangement 10 can preferably be used to simulate various different vehicle models and, in doing so, to virtually display the interior of a motor vehicle or even the motor vehicle from the outside. The perspective of the virtual environment 12 shown from a virtual point of view is preferably coupled to the position and movement of the VR glasses 16, so that the user can virtually walk around the virtually displayed motor vehicle while wearing the VR glasses 16 or can virtually look around the interior of the motor vehicle. For reasons of clarity, only a driver's seat 18b, a virtual passenger seat 20b and a virtual steering wheel 22b are shown as parts of a virtual motor vehicle in the displayed virtual environment 12.However, the simulation of the virtual environment 12 preferably presents a comprehensive representation of the interior and / or exterior of a motor vehicle.
[0026] To further increase the level of immersion in this motor vehicle simulation for a user, certain components of the virtual motor vehicle are also provided as real motor vehicle elements. In this case, the motor vehicle simulation arrangement 10 has a driver's seat 18a, a passenger seat 20a, and a steering wheel 22a as real motor vehicle elements. The user can thus sit on one of the seats 18a or 20a during the simulation and also feel parts of the virtually represented motor vehicle in a real way. To avoid a discrepancy between the real environment and the virtual environment 12, and in particular to avoid possible resulting accidents and collisions with the real environment, the motor vehicle simulation arrangement 10 has an adjustment device 24, which is schematically illustrated here as a rail system with corresponding actuators. This adjustment device 24 makes it possible to adjust the positions of the real motor vehicle elements, i.e., the driver's seat 18a, the passenger seat 20a, and the steering wheel 22a, and to set them to predetermined positions. For this purpose, the real motor vehicle elements can be adjusted in one, two, or even three mutually different spatial directions x, y, and z using the adjustment device 24. Control of the adjustment device 24 can be assumed by the simulation unit 14 or by a separate control device that is integrated into the adjustment device 24 and communicatively coupled to the simulation unit 14. The simulation unit 14 then provides information about which motor vehicle model is being simulated, for example, if a user selects a specific motor vehicle model for simulation prior to the simulation. For this selected motor vehicle model, a corresponding set of standard positions for the respective real motor vehicle elements is stored, for example, according to an assignment, so that when this specific motor vehicle model is selected for simulation, the motor vehicle simulation arrangement 10 automatically adjusts the real motor vehicle elements to the assigned standard positions using the adjustment device 24. These standard positions are defined such that the positions of the respective real motor vehicle elements in relation to a predetermined reference object 26a, which is schematically represented here as a reference system or coordinate system, correspond to the respective virtual positions of the virtual motor vehicle elements in relation to a predetermined virtual reference object 26b, which is also represented here by way of example as a coordinate system of the virtual environment 12.The coordinate system 26a of the real environment corresponds to the coordinate system 26b of the virtual environment 12 in such a way that, when the VR glasses 16 are located at a specific location relative to the real coordinate system 26a, the virtual viewpoint from which the perspective of the virtual environment 12 is determined is located at the same location relative to the virtual coordinate system 26b, and the positions of the real vehicle elements also correspond to the positions of the virtual vehicle elements with reference to the respective coordinate system. The coordinate systems 26a and 26b can thus be converted into one another using a congruence mapping that preserves the sense of rotation, resulting in a 1:1 mapping of the real vehicle elements to the virtual vehicle elements.
[0027] If a user selects a different motor vehicle model for simulation, the real motor vehicle elements are automatically adjusted so that their arrangement is adapted to the virtual motor vehicle elements to be simulated for the selected motor vehicle model. In other words, the position setting of the real motor vehicle elements is always adapted to the virtual motor vehicle elements to be simulated. This enables a user to safely orient themselves in their real environment, even while wearing the VR glasses 16, to specifically reach for real motor vehicle elements, such as the steering wheel 22a, or to sit down on or stand up from one of the seats 18a, 20a without orientation difficulties. It can also be provided that the real motor vehicle elements are used for a driving simulation. For this purpose, additional real elements, such as gearshifts and pedals, can also be provided, which can then preferably also be adjusted in position according to their virtual representatives. Advantageously, the user can thus easily grasp and operate the real vehicle elements without having to remove the VR headset 16 or interrupt the simulation, and without risking injury.
[0028] However, not only is an automatic and content-dependent position adjustment of the real elements adapted to the virtual environment 12 possible, but conversely, manually operable adjustment options can also be provided on the real vehicle components, which enable a user to make position corrections to these automatic presets, which can be recorded by appropriate recording means and provided to the simulation unit 14, which then adapts the representation of the virtual motor vehicle components to the position corrections made, so that the spatially correct 1:1 mapping between the real motor vehicle elements and the virtual motor vehicle elements is maintained.
[0029] Overall, a motor vehicle simulation arrangement is provided which, because real motor vehicle elements can be dynamically adapted in their position to the respective vehicle displayed, makes it possible to authentically reproduce the ergonomics of the displayed virtual motor vehicle.
