Description

[0001] The present invention relates to a packaging for shipping a paint bucket according to the preamble of claim 1.

[0002] Paint for painting walls, wood, or similar surfaces is often offered in oval plastic or metal containers in 3-liter, 5-liter, 10-liter, or 20-liter sizes. Shipping such containers is often a challenge because they are not sturdy enough, especially because if the container is dropped, the lid opens, the container breaks, and the paint spills out.

[0003] DE 20 2012 011 323 U1 discloses a recyclable packaging for paint buckets that consists of an outer and an inner packaging. The inner packaging, made of two-layer corrugated cardboard, has a cutout to accommodate the paint bucket. Nevertheless, it sometimes happens that the packaging is damaged during transport, causing the bucket to break or the lid to open.

[0004] JP 2015-202907 A discloses packaging for transporting bulk goods. This packaging comprises a three-part outer packaging into which an insert sleeve can be inserted. The outer packaging consists of a body and two bases with circumferential grooves, with the body being inserted into the circumferential grooves. To ship the bulk goods, the body is first inserted into the groove of a first base and then the insert sleeve is placed in the body. The bulk goods are then filled into the insert sleeve before the second base is placed on the body. Finally, a tensioning strap is attached around the two bases to hold everything together before the filled packaging is shipped. In the event that the packaging is damaged during transport, the insert sleeve prevents the bulk goods from escaping. However, this packaging, known from JP 2015-202907 A, is not suitable for holding paint buckets, as in the event of an impact during transport the lid of the paint bucket may be damaged and paint may leak out.

[0005] From US 6,237,838 B1 a packaging for transporting a hot water boiler is known, which comprises a cylindrical outer packaging and a plastic insert embedded in the bottom, wherein the hot water boiler stands completely on the plastic insert.

[0006] From US 4,623,063 a packaging for transporting coil material is known, which comprises an octagonal outer packaging and a corresponding octagonal inner packaging, wherein the coil material is held between the inner and outer packaging.

[0007] DE 19 94 355 U discloses a packaging made of solid or corrugated cardboard for relatively heavy, circular disc-shaped objects, with a square box with a supporting lid and four inserts forming a circular box interior made of upright strips of a width corresponding to the height of the box side walls, the bent ends of which support each other and the corners of the box.

[0008] Based on this, the present invention is based on the object of creating a packaging for shipping a paint bucket that prevents an uncontrolled opening of the paint bucket, even if the packaging including the paint bucket is handled roughly or falls down.

[0009] As a technical solution to this problem, the invention proposes a packaging of the type mentioned above with the features of claim 1. Advantageous further developments of this packaging can be found in the subclaims.

[0010] In one embodiment according to the invention, the packaging is provided with an insert made of a dimensionally stable plastic, wherein a base receptacle is formed in the insert for precisely accommodating the paint bucket. It goes without saying that the insert fits precisely into the half-carton, and the precise fit of the paint bucket in the base receptacle ensures that the paint bucket is held securely within the half-carton. As a result, any impact forces that may occur are partially absorbed by the insert, so that the impact forces arriving at the paint bucket are correspondingly small.

[0011] According to the invention, a ring line is used to form an easily removable ring. This ring line is arranged in such a way that, after the ring is removed, a lid is created for snugly accommodating a paint can in the lid area.

[0012] This has the advantage that one and the same insert can be used to hold the base of the paint bucket and, after removing the ring, also to hold the lid area of the paint bucket. Thus, only one insert needs to be manufactured and delivered, reducing logistics and inventory costs.

[0013] With such an insert, it is easy to prevent the paint bucket from slipping, both in the base area and in the area of the lid holder, which further increases safety when transporting the paint bucket.

[0014] Packaging designed according to this technical principle has the advantage that the internally mounted stand-up insert provides an additional force-absorbing element in addition to the two half-cartons, resulting in a much more stable package. It has proven advantageous to also construct the stand-up insert from corrugated cardboard and to arrange the corrugated cardboard so that the individual flutes are aligned vertically. This further increases the vertical stability of the carton.

[0015] It has also proven advantageous to make this stand insert wide enough to extend along the inside of the side wall, with a first and second end abutting against each other. This creates a stabilizing element all the way around, ensuring that any impact forces that might occur in the event of a fall are absorbed by the stand insert.

[0016] In an alternative embodiment, the first and second half-cartons are formed by a circumferential side wall and a base, with the base being octagonal. This octagonal design of the packaging has the advantage over a square packaging in that impacts do not hit the respective corner as hard, particularly because the resulting forces can be more easily dissipated into the adjacent side wall. Compared to a rounded or oval packaging, the octagonal half-cartons have the advantage that the angular arrangement allows for much greater stability, particularly in the horizontal direction.

[0017] In a preferred embodiment, it is of course also possible to equip the octagonal packaging with the stand-up insert described above. In this case, the advantages mentioned here are combined accordingly.

[0018] In a preferred embodiment, the corner walls of a half-carton are smaller than the intermediate walls of the half-carton. This different design makes it possible to accommodate oval paint buckets without having to abandon the octagonal principle.

[0019] In a highly preferred embodiment, it has proven sufficient to form the half-carton from two-ply corrugated cardboard, while the stand-up insert is made from three-ply corrugated cardboard. Especially with the octagonal design of the half-carton, the two-ply corrugated cardboard offers sufficient stability; preferably, the stand-up insert is made from three layers. Tests have shown that such packaging reliably secures the paint can and prevents the lid from popping open.

[0020] In a preferred embodiment, a buffer insert is additionally provided, which is made of the same dimensionally stable plastic as the insert, and which can also be inserted precisely into the half-carton. It has proven advantageous to position the buffer insert both below and above the paint bucket, so that the buffer insert forms an intermediate link between the half-carton and the paint bucket. This buffer insert absorbs any impact forces that occur, so that they reach the paint bucket in a significantly reduced amount.

[0021] In a particularly preferred embodiment, it has proven advantageous to connect the insert to the buffer insert, particularly by means of a material web. This significantly simplifies handling, especially when packing the paint bucket, since the insert and buffer insert are then used as a single component. This material web is created, for example, by forming the insert and buffer insert from a single piece of PE foam and only partially separating them at the connection point by a scored line.

[0022] The insert and the buffer insert can then be folded together so that the remaining part in the area of the scoring line holds parts together.

[0023] Further advantages of the packaging according to the invention will become apparent from the accompanying drawings and the embodiments described below. Likewise, the above-mentioned and further-described features can be used individually or in any combination with one another. The embodiments mentioned are not intended to be exhaustive, but rather are exemplary in nature. They show: Fig. 1 a perspective view of a packaging for shipping a paint bucket; Fig. 2 a sectional view of the packaging according to Fig. 1, cut along line II - II in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a detailed enlargement of the packaging according to Fig. 1, along line III in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 an exploded view of the packaging according to Fig. 1 in sectional view; Fig. 5 a plan view of an unfolded half-carton of the packaging according to Fig. 1; Fig. 6 a plan view of an insert with attached buffer insert of the packaging according to Fig. 1; Fig. 7 a plan view of a stand-up insert of the packaging according to Fig. 1.

[0024] In the Fig. 1 to 7, an embodiment of a packaging for shipping a paint can is shown, which comprises a first half-carton 10, a second half-carton 12, a standing insert 14, an insert 42 used as a base insert 16, an insert 42 used as a lid insert 18 and two buffer inserts 20.

[0025] The first half-carton 10 and the second half-carton 12 are identical and made of two-layer corrugated cardboard. Fig. Figure 5 shows a plan view of an unfolded half-carton 10, 12. This half-carton 10, 12 is composed of a base 22 and a circumferential side wall, wherein the side wall is divided into alternating corner walls 24 and intermediate walls 26. The base 22 is octagonal in shape and has folding edges on its outer contours, along which the respective corner wall 24 or the intermediate wall 26 can be folded up. Webs 28 are adjacent to the corner walls 24, which can be bent over corresponding folding edges. The intermediate wall 26 is divided into an inner element 30 and an outer element 32, wherein folding edges 38 are also provided between the outer element 32 and the inner element 30. At the outer end of the outer element 30, a tab 34 is formed, which can be inserted into a tab opening 36.

[0026] The actual half-carton 10, 12 is delivered to the customer unfolded, i.e., as a flat element. As soon as a paint bucket is to be shipped, such a half-carton 10, 12 is taken, with the corner walls 24 first being pulled upwards so that they are arranged at right angles to the base 22. The webs 28 are then slightly angled before the outer element 32 and the inner element 30 of the intermediate wall 26 are folded such that the outer element 32 and the inner element 30 engage around the webs 28, and the tab 34 is then inserted into the tab opening 36. It has proven advantageous to design the folding edge 38 between the inner element 30 and the outer element 32 as a double edge.

[0027] After all corner walls 24 and all intermediate walls 26 have been folded accordingly, the half-carton 10, 12 is finished.

[0028] The standing insert 14 is in the Fig. 7 is shown in detail. This standing insert 14 is made of three-ply corrugated cardboard and is designed so high that it reaches inside the packaging from the bottom 22 of one half-carton 10 to the bottom 22 of the other half-carton 12. In the area of the eight corners of the bottom 22 of the half-carton 10, 12, the standing insert 14 has folded edges 40 so that the standing insert 14 can be inserted inside the half-carton 10, 12 and can nestle snugly against the corner wall 24 and intermediate wall 26 of the half-carton 10, 12. This standing insert 14 is designed so wide that it extends all the way around the inside of the half-carton 10, 12 so that the front and rear ends of the standing insert 14 abut one another. It has proven advantageous to align the individual waves of the three-layer corrugated cardboard in such a way that they are vertically aligned in the finished packaging, i.e. they extend from a bottom 22 of the half-carton 10 to a bottom 22 of the second half-carton 12.This further increases stability.

[0029] In Fig.6 shows an insert 42 and a buffer insert 20. Both the insert 42 and the buffer insert 20 are made of dimensionally stable PE foam, with the outer contour of the buffer insert 20 being identical to the inner contour of the half-carton 10, 12, so that both the insert 42 and the buffer insert 20 can be inserted precisely into the interior of the half-carton 10, 12. Both the insert 42 and the buffer insert 20 are 25 mm thick and were originally made from one and the same piece of PE foam. Between the buffer insert 20 and the insert 42, a dividing line 44 is provided. This dividing line is designed as a scored line and only partially separates the material between the buffer insert 20 and the insert 42, leaving a material web so that the insert 42 and the buffer insert 20 remain connected to one another. However, this remaining material web is designed so small that the buffer insert 20 can be folded over in such a way that it rests on the insert 42.

[0030] A predetermined breaking line 46, designed in particular as a scored line, is provided approximately centrally in the buffer insert 20. This allows the user to create a window 48 by removing the inner material, allowing the paint bucket's label to be viewed when unpacking the paint bucket.

[0031] An oval base receptacle 50 is provided in the center of the insert 42, which is created by cutting out the corresponding material. The base of the paint bucket can later be precisely inserted into this base receptacle 50. Furthermore, a ring line 52 is provided in the insert 42, which is also oval. This ring line 52 is designed as a scored line and enables the ring 54 created between the base receptacle 50 and the ring line 51 to be easily cut out. After this ring 54 has been removed from the insert 42, a slightly larger receptacle is created that is suitable for receiving the lid area of the paint bucket. In other words, this means that the insert 42 with the remaining ring 54 is used as the base insert 16 to receive the base of the paint bucket, while the insert 42, after the ring 54 has been cut out, is used as the lid insert 18 to receive the lid area of the paint bucket.

[0032] To make transporting the packaging more cost-effective, it is delivered to the customer in an unfolded state, for example stored on a pallet. The customer then takes a first half-carton 10 and a second half-carton 12 and folds both as described above. The standing insert 14 is then inserted into the lower first half-carton 10 in such a way that the standing insert 14 is placed all the way around the inside of the half-carton 10, with the ends of the standing insert then abutting one another. An insert 42 and an attached buffer insert 20 are then taken, folded together, and inserted into the standing insert 14 of the first half-carton 10 in such a way that the buffer insert 20 rests on the bottom 22 of the first half-carton 10. The insert 42 is used here as the base insert 16. The paint bucket is then inserted with its base into the base opening 50 of the base insert 16 and is held securely in place from then on.Next, a second insert 42 is formed with a second buffer insert 20, and a window 48 is formed by removing the square material. The ring 54 is removed from the insert 42, so that the insert 42 is henceforth used as the lid insert 18. The buffer insert 20 is then folded open within the lid insert 18, and both are placed on the lid area of the paint bucket. For further inspection, the paint bucket label can now be viewed through the window 48. Finally, the second half-carton 12 is placed over the standing insert 14, before the first half-carton 10 and the second half-carton 12 are connected with two or three filament bands, and the carton is then ready for shipping.
