Abstract
Description
AREA
[0001] Exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a method and a device for controlling the deployment of an airbag and in particular a method and a device for controlling the deployment of an airbag which are capable of deploying an airbag by reducing a threshold value for airbag deployment during the secondary collision in the successive occurrence of a primary collision and a secondary collision. BACKGROUND DISCUSSION
[0002] In general, an airbag system is a system that instantly inflates an airbag during a vehicle collision and safely protects an occupant in a vehicle through the damping effect of the airbag.
[0003] To determine whether the airbag should be deployed in the vehicle during a vehicle collision, the airbag system detects the collision using sensor information measured by various sensors installed in the vehicle.
[0004] In such a case, the airbag system determines the collision and the collision intensity using deceleration and acceleration information measured by an acceleration sensor contained in an airbag control unit located inside the vehicle, a front collision sensor mounted in the front of the vehicle, and a side collision sensor mounted on the side of the vehicle, and determines an airbag deployment time by applying such deceleration and acceleration information to an airbag deployment algorithm.
[0005] The relevant prior art of the present disclosure is disclosed in Korean patent application no. 10-2009-0110980 (published on October 26, 2009, entitled “Airbag System for Car”). DE 10 2015 116 142 A1 discloses a method for controlling the deployment of an airbag with the features of the preamble of claim 1. Further methods for controlling the deployment of an airbag are known from DE 10 2014 107 618 A1 and DE 10 2008 043 637 A1. OVERVIEW
[0006] The airbag system in the associated prior art deploys a front airbag when a physical quantity measured during a frontal collision is equal to or greater than a predetermined threshold, and deploys a side airbag when a physical quantity measured during a side collision is equal to or greater than the threshold.
[0007] In the case of a complex collision, where a primary and a secondary collision occur sequentially, a physical quantity may be relatively small in each collision, making it difficult to injure an occupant independently. However, if the primary and secondary collisions occur within a short period of time, a complex collision can injure the occupant. Therefore, it is necessary to protect the occupant from injury even in the case of a complex collision.
[0008] Various embodiments relate to providing a method and a device for controlling the deployment of an airbag, whereby, in the successive occurrence of a primary collision and a secondary collision, a threshold value for airbag deployment is reduced, and the airbag is deployed during the secondary collision based on the reduced threshold value. The method according to the invention for controlling the deployment of an airbag is defined by the features of claim 1. The device according to the invention for controlling the deployment of an airbag is defined by the features of claim 6.
[0009] A method for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to one aspect of the present disclosure may include the following steps: determining whether a complex collision has occurred, based on collision-related physical quantities resulting from a vehicle collision; and setting a threshold as a criterion for determining whether an airbag should be deployed if the complex collision has occurred as a result of the determination.
[0010] In the present disclosure, the threshold can be reduced in the step of setting the threshold for airbag deployment.
[0011] In the present disclosure, the collision-related physical quantities can include at least one of velocity in the direction of the X-axis, displacement in the direction of the X-axis, velocity in the direction of the Y-axis, displacement in the direction of the Y-axis, vector values of velocity in the direction of the X-axis / velocity in the direction of the Y-axis and vector values of displacement in the direction of the X-axis / displacement in the direction of the Y-axis.
[0012] In the present disclosure, in the step of determining whether the complex collision has occurred, a primary collision can be detected based on the collision-related physical quantities, and it can be determined that the complex collision has occurred if a secondary collision is detected within a predetermined time after detection of the primary collision.
[0013] In the present disclosure, the method may further include a step to determine whether the airbag should be deployed according to the set threshold value and to deploy the airbag according to a determination result.
[0014] In the present disclosure, the airbag can be deployed in the airbag deployment step if at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the set threshold.
[0015] A method for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to the present invention comprises the following steps: detecting a primary collision based on collision-related physical quantities due to a vehicle collision; comparing the collision-related physical quantities detected during the primary collision with a threshold value as a criterion for determining whether an airbag should be deployed, and deploying the airbag according to a comparison result; detecting a secondary collision based on the collision-related physical quantities in a state in which the airbag is not deployed; setting the threshold value when the secondary collision is detected; and determining whether the airbag should be deployed according to the set threshold value and deploying the airbag according to a determination result.
[0016] In the present disclosure, the threshold can be reduced in the step to setting the threshold.
[0017] In the present disclosure, the collision-related physical quantities can include at least one of velocity in the direction of the X-axis, displacement in the direction of the X-axis, velocity in the direction of the Y-axis, displacement in the direction of the Y-axis, vector values of velocity in the direction of the X-axis / velocity in the direction of the Y-axis and vector values of displacement in the direction of the X-axis / displacement in the direction of the Y-axis.
[0018] In the present disclosure, the secondary collision can be determined in the step of determining the secondary collision according to the collision-related physical quantities that are detected within a predetermined time after detection of the primary collision.
[0019] In the present disclosure, the airbag can be deployed in the airbag deployment step if at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the set threshold.
[0020] A device for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to one aspect of the present disclosure may include: a complex collision detection section that determines whether a complex collision has occurred, based on collision-related physical quantities detected by a collision detection unit; and a threshold setting section that sets a threshold as a criterion for determining whether an airbag should be deployed when the complex collision detection section determines that the complex collision has occurred.
[0021] In the present disclosure, the threshold adjustment section can reduce the threshold.
[0022] In the present disclosure, the collision-related physical quantities can include at least one of velocity in the direction of the X-axis, displacement in the direction of the X-axis, velocity in the direction of the Y-axis, displacement in the direction of the Y-axis, vector values of velocity in the direction of the X-axis / velocity in the direction of the Y-axis and vector values of displacement in the direction of the X-axis / displacement in the direction of the Y-axis.
[0023] In the present disclosure, the complex collision detection section can detect a primary collision based on the collision-related physical quantities and determine that the complex collision has occurred if a secondary collision is detected within a predetermined time after detection of the primary collision.
[0024] In the present disclosure, the device may further include an airbag deployment control section which determines, according to the set threshold, whether the airbag should be deployed and deploys the airbag according to a determination result.
[0025] In the present disclosure, the airbag deployment control section can deploy the airbag if at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the set threshold.
[0026] A device for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to the present invention comprises: a complex collision detection section that detects a primary collision based on collision-related physical quantities due to a vehicle collision and determines that a complex collision has occurred if a secondary collision is detected within a predetermined time after detection of the primary collision; a threshold setting section that sets a threshold when the secondary collision is detected;and an airbag deployment control section that compares the collision-related physical quantities detected during the primary collision with the threshold as a criterion for determining whether an airbag should be deployed, deploys the airbag according to a determination result, determines whether the airbag should be deployed according to the set threshold if the secondary collision is detected in a state in which the airbag was not deployed during the primary collision, and deploys the airbag according to a determination result.
[0027] In the present disclosure, the threshold adjustment section can reduce the threshold.
[0028] In the present disclosure, the collision-related physical quantities can include at least one of velocity in the direction of the X-axis, displacement in the direction of the X-axis, velocity in the direction of the Y-axis, displacement in the direction of the Y-axis, vector values of velocity in the direction of the X-axis / velocity in the direction of the Y-axis and vector values of displacement in the direction of the X-axis / displacement in the direction of the Y-axis.
[0029] In the present disclosure, the airbag deployment control section can deploy the airbag if at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the set threshold.
[0030] According to the method and device for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to one aspect of the present disclosure, when a primary collision and a secondary collision occur successively, a threshold for airbag deployment is reduced in order to deploy the airbag based on the reduced threshold during the secondary collision, thereby minimizing injury to an occupant during a complex collision.

[0035] Fig. Figure 1 shows a block configuration diagram illustrating a device for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, Fig. Figure 2 shows a conceptual representation of a complex collision according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Fig. Figure 3 shows a block configuration diagram illustrating an airbag control unit according to an embodiment of the present disclosure and Fig. Figure 4 shows a conceptual representation of an example of setting a threshold during a complex collision according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0036] Referring to Fig. 1 The device for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to an embodiment of the present disclosure comprises a collision detection unit 10, an airbag 20 and an airbag control unit (ACU) 30.
[0037] The collision detection unit 10 detects a collision of a vehicle 40. The collision detection unit 10 has a frontal collision sensor 11, a side collision sensor 12 and a side pressure sensor 13.
[0038] The frontal collision sensor 11 is attached to a shock absorber side of a vehicle body, i.e. on a side element or front end module (FEM), and detects a frontal collision as an acceleration signal.
[0039] The side collision sensor 12 is mounted on a lateral side of the vehicle body and detects a side collision as an acceleration signal.
[0040] The frontal collision sensor 11 and the side collision sensor 12 cannot exist separately, but can be installed in the airbag control unit 30 as sensors that detect accelerations in a longitudinal direction ACU-X and a transverse direction ACU-Y of the vehicle.
[0041] The side pressure sensor 13 is mounted on the lateral side of the vehicle body and detects pressure caused by a side collision as an acceleration signal.
[0042] The airbag 20 inflates instantly during a collision involving the vehicle 40 and reliably protects an occupant in the vehicle 40 through a cushioning effect. The airbag 20 can be installed in the steering wheel (driver's airbag), the dashboard on the passenger side (passenger airbag), the side of the vehicle (side airbag), and the like, to protect an occupant from a collision involving the vehicle 40. Depending on the vehicle 40, the airbag 20 can be installed not only in the steering wheel, the dashboard on the passenger side, and the side as described above, but also in various other locations.
[0043] The airbag control unit 30 detects a collision of the vehicle 40 according to the collision-related physical quantities detected by the above-mentioned collision detection unit 10 and deploys the airbag 20.
[0044] The collision-related physical quantities can include at least one of the following: velocity in the direction of the X-axis, displacement in the direction of the X-axis, velocity in the direction of the Y-axis, displacement in the direction of the Y-axis, vector values of velocity in the direction of the X-axis / velocity in the direction of the Y-axis and vector values of displacement in the direction of the X-axis / displacement in the direction of the Y-axis.
[0045] This means that the airbag control unit 30 compares the collision-related physical quantities detected by the collision detection unit 10 with a predetermined threshold for airbag deployment, deploys the airbag 20 if the comparison indicates that at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the threshold, and does not deploy the airbag 20 if the comparison indicates that at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is less than the threshold. Whether the airbag 20 should deploy can be determined by the aforementioned threshold.
[0046] Thus, in the event of a complex collision where a primary collision and a secondary collision occur sequentially, the airbag control unit 30 compares the following: Fig. Figure 2 shows that each time the primary and secondary collisions occur, the collision-related physical quantities are compared to the threshold value for each collision, and it is determined whether the airbag should deploy according to the comparison result. In the complex collision mentioned above, it frequently happens that the collision-related physical quantities are relatively smaller than the threshold value.
[0047] Although the collision-related physical quantities of the primary and secondary collisions are each relatively smaller than the threshold for airbag deployment, there is a relatively high probability that an occupant will be fatally injured in two successive collisions, particularly in the secondary collision.
[0048] Accordingly, upon detection of the aforementioned complex collision, the airbag control unit 30 deploys the airbag 20 by setting the threshold for airbag deployment during the secondary collision, thereby minimizing injury to an occupant due to the complex collision.
[0049] Referring to Fig. 3 The airbag control unit 30 has an airbag deployment control section 31, a complex collision detection section 32 and a threshold setting section 33.
[0050] The airbag deployment control section 31 compares the collision-related physical quantities detected by the collision detection unit 10 with the airbag deployment threshold and deploys the airbag 20 according to the comparison result.
[0051] More precisely, the airbag deployment control section 31 receives a detection signal from the collision detection unit 10, e.g. from at least one from the frontal collision sensor 11, the side collision sensor 12 and the side pressure sensor 13.
[0052] The airbag deployment control section 31 controls the deployment of a driver airbag 20 or a passenger airbag 20 based on the detection signal of the frontal collision sensor 11 or controls the deployment of a side airbag 20 based on the detection signals of the side collision sensor 12 and the side pressure sensor 13.
[0053] This means that the airbag deployment control section 31 detects the collision-related physical quantities based on at least one of the detection signals for the accelerations in the longitudinal direction ACU-X and the transverse direction ACU-Y of the vehicle from the frontal collision sensor 11 and the side collision sensor 12 and the detection signal of the side pressure sensor 13.
[0054] Subsequently, the airbag deployment control section 31 determines whether at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than a threshold value that is predetermined in each of the collision-related physical quantities.
[0055] The airbag deployment control section 31 deploys the airbag 20 if at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the threshold value predetermined in each of the collision-related physical quantities, and does not deploy the airbag 20 if at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is less than the threshold value predetermined in each of the collision-related physical quantities.
[0056] The process described above, in which the airbag deployment control section 31 determines whether the airbag should be deployed based on the threshold and deploys the airbag, is carried out independently of each other during a vehicle collision, e.g. for each of the primary and secondary collisions.
[0057] The complex collision detection section 32 determines whether a complex collision has occurred, based on the collision-related physical quantities resulting from the vehicle collision.
[0058] That is, if the primary collision is detected based on the collision-related physical quantities and the secondary collision is detected within a predetermined time after the detection of the primary collision, the complex collision detection section 32 determines that the complex collision has occurred.
[0059] Referring to Fig. 4 The airbag deployment control section 32 detects the collision-related physical quantities based on at least one of the detection signals for the accelerations in the longitudinal direction ACU-X and the transverse direction ACU-Y of the vehicle from the frontal collision sensor 11 and the side collision sensor 12 and the detection signal of the side pressure sensor 13.
[0060] Subsequently, the complex collision detection section 32 compares each of the collision-related physical quantities (first and second collision-related physical quantities) with a first collision reference value predetermined in the corresponding physical quantity and determines that a primary collision has occurred if at least one of these collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the first collision reference value predetermined in the corresponding physical quantity.
[0061] As described above, when the primary collision is detected, the complex collision detection section 32 resets the primary collision and blocks the primary collision.
[0062] The complex collision detection section 32 detects the secondary collision within a predetermined time after the detection of the primary collision.
[0063] This means that the complex collision detection section 32 detects collision-related physical quantities based on at least one of the detection signals for the accelerations in the longitudinal direction ACU-X and the transverse direction ACU-Y of the vehicle from the frontal collision sensor 11 and the side collision sensor 12 and the detection signal of the side pressure sensor 13 within the predetermined time after detection of the primary collision and compares each of these collision-related physical quantities (first and second collision-related physical quantity) with a second collision reference value that is predetermined in the corresponding collision-related physical quantity. The complex collision detection section 32 determines that a secondary collision has occurred if at least one of these collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the second collision reference value specified in the corresponding physical quantity.
[0064] In such a case, at least one of the collision-related physical quantities, as a criterion for determining whether it is equal to or greater than the second collision reference value, may be the same as or different from the collision-related physical quantities used in the detection of the primary collision.
[0065] Threshold setting section 33 sets the threshold when the complex collision is detected by the complex collision detection section 32. In such a case, threshold setting section 33 reduces the threshold for airbag deployment.
[0066] Consequently, the airbag deployment control section 31 determines whether the airbag should be deployed according to the reduced threshold during the secondary collision and deploys the airbag 20, thereby minimizing injury to an occupant due to the non-deployment of the airbag 20 during the complex collision.
[0067] In the following, a method for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to an embodiment of the present disclosure is described in detail with reference to Fig. 5 described.
[0068] Fig. Figure 5 shows a flowchart to illustrate the method for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0069] Referring to Fig.5 The collision detection unit 10 first detects a collision of the vehicle 40. In such a case, the frontal collision sensor 11 detects a frontal collision as an acceleration signal, the side collision sensor 12 detects a side collision as an acceleration signal, and the side pressure sensor 13 detects pressure caused by a side collision as an acceleration signal.
[0070] The airbag deployment control section 31 receives detection signals from the collision detection unit 10, e.g., from the frontal collision sensor 11, the side collision sensor 12, and the side pressure sensor 13, detects collision-related physical quantities based on at least one of the detection signals for the accelerations in the longitudinal direction ACU-X and the lateral direction ACU-Y of the vehicle from the frontal collision sensor 11 and the side collision sensor 12 and the detection signal of the side pressure sensor 13, and then determines whether at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than a threshold value that is predetermined in each of the collision-related physical quantities.
[0071] The airbag deployment control section 31 deploys the airbag 20 if at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the threshold value predetermined in the corresponding collision-related physical quantity, and does not deploy the airbag 20 if at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is less than the threshold value predetermined in the corresponding collision-related physical quantity.
[0072] Meanwhile, the complex collision detection section 32 receives the detection signals from the frontal collision sensor 11, the side collision sensor 12 and the side pressure sensor 13, detects collision-related physical quantities based on at least one of the detection signals for the accelerations in the longitudinal direction ACU-X and the transverse direction ACU-Y of the vehicle from the frontal collision sensor 11 and the side collision sensor 12 and the detection signal of the side pressure sensor 13, and then detects a primary collision based on these collision-related physical quantities (S10).
[0073] When the primary collision is detected, the complex collision detection section 32 resets the collision-related physical quantities due to the primary collision (S20) and determines whether a secondary collision is detected before the expiry of a specified time (S30).
[0074] This means that the complex collision detection section 32 detects the collision-related physical quantities based on at least one of the detection signals for the accelerations in the longitudinal direction ACU-X and the transverse direction ACU-Y of the vehicle from the frontal collision sensor 11 and the side collision sensor 12 and the detection signal of the side pressure sensor 13 within a predetermined time after detection of the primary collision and determines that the secondary collision has occurred if at least one of these collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the second collision reference value that is predetermined in the corresponding collision-related physical quantity.
[0075] In this context, at least one of the collision-related physical quantities can be the same as or different from the collision-related physical quantities used in the detection of the primary collision, serving as a criterion for determining whether it is equal to or greater than the second collision reference value.
[0076] As described above, when the complex collision is detected by the complex collision detection section 32, the threshold setting section 33 sets the airbag deployment threshold (S40). In such a case, the threshold setting section 33 reduces the threshold so that the airbag 20 can deploy during the secondary collision.
[0077] Accordingly, during the secondary collision, the airbag deployment control section 31 compares the collision-related physical quantities detected by the collision detection unit 10 with the threshold set as described above and determines whether at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the set threshold (S50).
[0078] As a result of the determination in step S50, if at least one of the collision-related physical quantities is equal to or greater than the set threshold, the airbag deployment control section 31 deploys the airbag 20 (S60).
[0079] This means that the airbag deployment control section 31 determines, according to the reduced threshold, whether the airbag should be deployed and deploys the airbag 20, thereby minimizing injury to an occupant due to the non-deployment of the airbag 20 during the complex collision.
[0080] As described above, according to the method for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, when the primary collision and the secondary collision occur sequentially, the threshold for airbag deployment is reduced in order to deploy the airbag based on the reduced threshold during the secondary collision, thereby minimizing injury to an occupant during the complex collision.
[0081] Furthermore, the method and device for controlling the deployment of an airbag according to an embodiment of the present disclosure reduce warranty claims due to the non-deployment of an airbag during the complex collision.
