Description

Technical field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to compounds for organic electronic devices such as organic light-emitting devices. In particular, the present disclosure relates to a metal complex comprising a ligand L a with a structure of formula 1A and a ligand L b containing a structure of formula 1Ba, as well as an organic electroluminescent device and a compound composition containing the metal complex background

[0002] Organic electronic devices include, but are not limited to, the following types: organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (O-FETs), organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs), organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs), dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), organic optical detectors, organic photoreceptors, organic field-quench devices (OFQDs), light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), organic laser diodes, and organic plasmon-emitting devices.

[0003] In 1987, Tang and Van Slyke of Eastman Kodak reported on a two-layer organic electroluminescent device comprising an arylamine hole transport layer and a tris-8-hydroxyquinolato aluminum layer as the electron and emitting layer (Applied Physics Letters, 1987, 51(12): 913–915). When a bias voltage was applied to the device, it emitted green light. This device laid the foundation for the development of modern organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). State-of-the-art OLEDs can have multiple layers, such as charge injection and transport layers, charge and exciton blocking layers, and one or more emitting layers between the cathode and anode. Because the OLED is a self-emitting solid-state device, it offers tremendous potential for display and lighting applications.Furthermore, the inherent properties of organic materials, such as their flexibility, make them well-suited for certain applications, such as manufacturing on flexible substrates.

[0004] OLEDs can be classified into three different types according to their emission mechanism. The OLED invented by Tang and van Slyke is a fluorescent OLED. It uses only singlet emission. The triplets generated in the device are wasted via non-radiative decay channels. Therefore, the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of the fluorescent OLED is only 25%. This limitation hampered the commercialization of OLEDs. In 1997, Forrest and Thompson reported a phosphorescent OLED that uses triplet emission from heavy metal-containing complexes as emitters. This allows both singlets and triplets to be harvested, achieving an IQE of 100%. The discovery and development of phosphorescent OLEDs, due to their high efficiency, directly contributed to the commercialization of active-matrix OLEDs (AMOLEDs).Recently, Adachi achieved high efficiency through thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) of organic compounds. These emitters exhibit a small singlet-triplet gap that allows the transition from triplet back to singlet. In the TADF device, the triplet excitons can undergo reverse intersystem crossing to generate singlet excitons, resulting in a high interquantum emission (IQE).

[0005] OLEDs can also be classified as small-molecule and polymer OLEDs, depending on the shapes of the materials used. A small molecule refers to any organic or organometallic material that is not a polymer. The molecular mass of a small molecule can be large, provided it has a well-defined structure. Dendrimers with well-defined structures are considered small molecules. Polymer OLEDs include conjugated polymers and non-conjugated polymers with emitting side groups. A small-molecule OLED can become a polymer OLED if post-polymerization occurs during the fabrication process.

[0006] There are various methods for manufacturing OLEDs. Low-molecular-weight OLEDs are generally produced by thermal vacuum evaporation. Polymer OLEDs are manufactured using solution-based processes such as spin coating, inkjet printing, and slot printing. If the material can be dissolved or dispersed in a solvent, the low-molecular-weight OLED can also be manufactured using a solution-based process.

[0007] The emission color of an OLED can be achieved through the design of the emitter. An OLED can have one or more emitting layers to achieve the desired spectrum. Phosphorescent emitters have been successfully commercialized for green, yellow, and red OLEDs. Blue phosphorescent devices still suffer from an unsaturated blue color, a short device lifespan, and high operating voltage requirements. Commercially available OLED color displays typically employ a hybrid strategy, using fluorescent blue and phosphorescent yellow or red and green. Currently, the efficiency drop of phosphorescent OLEDs at high brightness levels remains a problem. Furthermore, a more saturated emission color, higher efficiency, and a longer device lifespan are desirable.

[0008] Cyano substitutions are generally not introduced into phosphorescent metal complexes such as iridium complexes. US 2014 / 0 252 333 A1 discloses a number of iridium complexes with cyano and phenyl substitutions and has not shown any clear effect of cyano groups. Additionally, since cyano is a highly electron-withdrawing substituent, it is also used to shift the emission spectrum of a phosphorescent metal complex towards blue, as described in US 2004 / 0 121 184 A1. An earlier application, US 2020 / 0 251 666 A1, of the applicant in the present application discloses a metal complex with a cyano-substituted ligand. The metal complex is applicable to an organic electroluminescence device and can improve the device's performance and color saturation to a relatively high level in industry, but further improvements are needed.

[0009] Alkyl substitutions are generally introduced into phosphorescent metal complexes such as iridium complexes to emit red light. US 2014 / 0231755A1 states that deuterated methyl at position 5 of 2-phenylpyridine can improve the lifetime of a device.

[0010] DE 10 2020 209 376 A1 discloses a series of iridium complexes, wherein the L b exhibit a general structure and R a Generally disclosed as selected from alkyl or cycloalkyl. However, this application does not disclose a compound having a specific alkyl or cycloalkyl substitution on the pyridine ring of phenylpyridine, wherein the number of carbon atoms in the substituent is at least 4. Fig. Figure 2 shows a schematic diagram of another organic light-emitting device which may contain a metal complex and a compound composition disclosed herein. Detailed description

[0016] OLEDs can be manufactured on various types of substrates such as glass, plastic and metal foil. Fig.Figure 1 schematically depicts an organic light-emitting device 100 without restriction. The figures are not necessarily drawn to scale. Some of the layers shown in the figures may be omitted if necessary. The device 100 may comprise a substrate 101, an anode 110, a hole injection layer 120, a hole transport layer 130, an electron blocking layer 140, an emitting layer 150, a hole blocking layer 160, an electron transport layer 170, an electron injection layer 180, and a cathode 190. The device 100 can be fabricated by depositing the described layers in this order. The properties and functions of these various layers, as well as exemplary materials, are described in more detail in US 2005 / 0260449A1 in columns 6 to 10.

[0017] Further examples of each of these layers are available. For example, a flexible and transparent substrate-anode combination is disclosed in US 5,844,363 A. An example of a p-doped hole transport layer is m-MTDATA doped with F4-TCNQ in a molar ratio of 50:1, as disclosed in US 2003 / 0230980A1. Examples of host materials are disclosed in US 6,303,238B1 by Thompson et al. An example of an n-doped electron transport layer is BPhen doped with Li in a molar ratio of 1:1, as disclosed in US 2003 / 0230980A1. US patents US 5,703,436 A and US 5,707,745 A disclose examples of cathodes, including composite cathodes, that have a thin metal layer, such as Mg:Ag, with an overlying transparent, electrically conductive ITO layer deposited by sputtering. The theory and use of blocking layers are described in more detail in US 6,097,147 A and US 2003 / 0230,980 A1.Examples of injection layers are provided in US 2004 / 0174116A1. A description of protective layers can be found in US 2004 / 0174116A1.

[0018] The layer structure described above is provided by non-exhaustive examples. Functional OLEDs can be achieved by combining the various described layers in different ways, or layers can be omitted entirely. It can also include other layers not specifically described. Within each layer, a single material or a mixture of several materials can be used to achieve optimal performance. Each functional layer can contain multiple sublayers. For example, the emitting layer can have two layers of different emitting materials to achieve the desired emission spectrum.

[0019] In one embodiment, an OLED can be described as having an "organic layer" arranged between a cathode and an anode. This organic layer can consist of a single layer or multiple layers.

[0020] An OLED can be encapsulated by a barrier layer. Fig. Figure 2 schematically represents an organic light-emitting device 200 without restriction. Fig. 2 differs from Fig.1. The organic light-emitting device includes a barrier layer 102 located above the cathode 190 to protect it from harmful environmental species such as moisture and oxygen. Any material capable of providing the barrier function can be used, for example, glass or organic-inorganic hybrid layers. The barrier layer should be placed directly or indirectly outside the OLED device. A multilayer thin-film encapsulation was described in US 2008 / 0237 181 A1.

[0021] Devices manufactured according to embodiments of the present disclosure can be integrated into a wide variety of consumer products that incorporate one or more modules (or units) of electronic components. Some examples of such consumer products include flat panel displays, monitors, medical monitors, televisions, billboards, indoor or outdoor lighting fixtures and / or signaling devices, field-of-view displays, fully or partially transparent displays, flexible displays, smartphones, tablets, phablets, wearable devices, smartwatches, laptop computers, digital cameras, camcorders, viewfinders, microdisplays, 3D displays, vehicle displays, and vehicle taillights.

[0022] The materials and structures described herein may be used in other organic electronic devices listed above.

[0023] As used here, "above" means furthest from the substrate, whereas "below" means closest to the substrate. When a first layer is described as "arranged above" a second layer, the first layer is arranged farther from the substrate. Other layers may be located between the first and second layers unless it is specified that the first layer is "in contact with" the second layer. For example, a cathode may be described as "arranged above" an anode even though various organic layers are located between them.

[0024] As used herein, “solution-processable” means the ability to be dissolved, dispersed or transported and / or separated from a liquid medium, either in solution or suspension form.

[0025] A ligand can be described as "photoactive" if it is assumed that the ligand directly contributes to the photoactive properties of an emitting material. A ligand can be described as "helper" if it is assumed that the ligand does not contribute to the photoactive properties of an emitting material, although a helper ligand can modify the properties of a photoactive ligand.

[0026] It is assumed that the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of fluorescent OLEDs can exceed the spin statistics limit of 25% through delayed fluorescence. As used here, two types of delayed fluorescence are present: P-type delayed fluorescence and E-type delayed fluorescence. P-type delayed fluorescence is generated by triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA).

[0027] In contrast, E-type delayed fluorescence is not based on the collision of two triplets, but rather on the transition between triplet states and excited singlet states. Compounds capable of generating E-type delayed fluorescence must have very small singlet-triplet gaps to convert between energy states. Thermal energy can activate the transition from the triplet state back to the singlet state. This type of delayed fluorescence is also known as thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). A special characteristic of TADF is that the delayed component increases with increasing temperature. If the reverse intersystem crossing rate is high enough to minimize non-radiative decay from the triplet state, the fraction of reoccupied excited singlet states can potentially reach 75%. The total singlet fraction can be 100%, far exceeding the 25% spin statistics limit for electrically generated excitons.

[0028] Delayed E-type fluorescence properties can be found in an exciplex system or in a single compound. While not bound to any specific theory, it is generally accepted that delayed E-type fluorescence requires the luminescent material to have a small singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE). S-TOrganic, non-metallic, luminescent donor-acceptor materials may be able to achieve this. The emission in these materials is generally referred to as donor-acceptor charge transfer (CT) type emission. The spatial separation of the HOMO and LUMO in these donor-acceptor-type compounds generally results in a small ΔE S-T These states can be associated with CT states. In general, luminescent donor-acceptor materials are prepared by combining an electron donor unit, such as amino or carbazole derivatives, with an electron acceptor unit, such as nitrogen-containing six-membered aromatic rings. [0111] The structures of the materials used in the devices are as follows:

[0112] The current-voltage luminance (IVL) characteristics of the devices were measured. The CIE data, the maximum emission wavelengths λ maxand the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the devices was set to 1000 cd / m² 2 The vaporization temperature (Sub T) of a material is a temperature measured when the metal complex undergoes thermal vacuum vaporization at a rate of 0.2 angstroms per second and a vacuum of approximately 10 degrees. -8 Torr is subjected to this. The lifetime data (LT97) were obtained at a constant current of 80 mA / cm². 2 Tested. The data were recorded and are shown in Table 2. Table 2: Device data of examples 1 and 3 and comparison examples 1 and 2 Device no. Sub T (°C) CIE (x, y) l max (nm) FWHM (nm) LT 97 (h) Example 1 258 (0,349, 0,630) 533 37,6 17,20 Example 3 252 (0,345, 0,633) 532 36,3 21,40 Comparative example 1 291 (0,335, 0,638) 528 40,9 11,35 Comparative example 2 287 (0,346, 0,631) 531 40,6 14,90

[0113] As can be seen from the data in Table 2, the FWHM of Example 1 is 3.3 nm lower than that of Comparative Example 1 and 3.0 nm lower than that of Comparative Example 2. At the same time, the evaporation temperature of Example 1 is almost 33 °C lower than that of Comparative Example 1 and almost 29 °C lower than that of Comparative Example 2. The lower evaporation temperature contributes to the stability of the complex of the present disclosure in an evaporation process, and a low evaporation temperature is advantageous for the industrial application of materials and can reduce energy consumption. In addition, the lifetime of Example 1 is 51.5% longer than that of Comparative Example 1 and 15.4% longer than that of Comparative Example 2. Similarly, the FWHM of Example 3, in which the metal complex 17 is used in the device, is 4.6 nm and 15.4% longer, respectively.Example 3 has a 4.3 nm smaller diameter than comparison examples 1 and 2, an evaporation temperature almost 40 °C and 37 °C lower, and a lifetime 88.5% and 43.6% longer, respectively. This means Example 3 has a lower FWHM, a lower evaporation temperature, and a significantly improved device lifetime. The overall performance of the device is considerably improved.

[0114] The metal complex 13 used in Example 1 contains the same ligand L b like the metal complex GD1 used in comparative example 1 and the metal complex GD2 used in comparative example 2, but with the ligand L a has different substituents. In comparison to the examples without substitution or with only one methyl substitution, example 1, in which the ligand L aWhen used with a specific substitution, a lower FWHM, a lower evaporation temperature, and a longer device lifetime are observed. The metal complex 17 used in Example 3 also contains a deuterium substitution at ligand L. b , which further improves the performance of the device and increases the overall performance of the device. [0118] The structures of the new materials used in the devices are as follows:

[0119] The IVL properties of the devices were measured. The CIE data, the maximum emission wavelengths λ max and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the devices was set to 1000 cd / m² 2The vaporization temperature (Sub T) of a material is the temperature tested when the metal complex undergoes thermal vacuum vaporization at a rate of 0.2 angstroms per second and a vacuum of approximately 10 degrees. -8 Torr is subjected to this. The lifetime data (LT97) were obtained at a constant current of 80 mA / cm². 2 Tested. The data were recorded and are shown in Table 4. Table 4 Device data of Example 2 and Comparative Example 3 Device no. [0120] As can be seen from the data in Table 4, the FWHM of device Example 2 is 2.3 nm lower than that of device Comparison Example 3, and the evaporation temperature of device Example 2 is almost 26 °C lower than that of Comparison Example 3. Furthermore, the lifetime of Example 2 is 16.4% longer than that of Comparison Example 3. The metal complex 7 used in Example 2 contains the same ligand L. b such as the metal complex GD3 used in comparative example 3, the ligand L a However, it has different substituents. Example 2 has a lower FWHM, a lower evaporation temperature, and a longer lifetime of the device than comparative example 3, which in turn proves the excellent effects of the present disclosure. Sublimation data

[0121] The metal complexes and reference compounds in the present disclosure were sublimated using a sublimation apparatus with model number BOF-A1-3-60, manufactured by Anhui BEQ Equipment Technology Co. Metal complex 13, metal complex 17, metal complex 7, and the reference complexes GD1, GD2, and GD3 in the present disclosure were separately introduced into sublimation tubes of the sublimation apparatus and heated to 300 °C to 370 °C for stable sublimation, yielding the metal complexes. The degree of vacuum in the sublimation tubes was reduced to less than 9.9 × 10⁻⁶ using a molecular pump. -4 Pa was reduced. The data on the sublimation yield of these materials were recorded and are shown in Table 5. The sublimation yield is the ratio of a mass after sublimation to a mass before sublimation. Table 5: Sublimation data Connection number Sublimation yield (%) Metal complex 13 85,3 Metal complex 17 88,8 Metal complex 7 71,1 GD1 connection 32,5 GD2 connection 58,9 GD3 connection 48,8

[0122] As can be seen from the data in Table 5, metal complex 13 and metal complex 17 exhibit certain substitutions on ligand L. a In the present disclosure, an excellent sublimation performance is observed, with the sublimation yields of metal complex 13 and metal complex 17 reaching 85.3% and 88.8%, respectively, which is almost 1.6 and 1.7 times higher than the sublimation yield (32.8%) of the reference compound GD1. Similarly, the sublimation yields of metal complex 13 and metal complex 17 are 44.8% and 50.7% higher, respectively, than the sublimation yield (58.9%) of the reference compound GD2. Furthermore, the sublimation yield of metal complex 7 reaches 71.1%, which is 45.6% higher than the sublimation yield (48.8%) of the reference compound GD3. The results show that the metal complex with a specific (cyclo)alkyl substitution, which is incorporated into the structure of ligand L in the present disclosure, exhibits excellent sublimation performance. aThe introduced substitution yield is higher than that of the metal complex without it. This significant increase in substitution yield is unexpected and of great importance for the mass production of metal complexes in industry. Device example 4

[0129] The structures of the new materials used in the devices are as follows:

[0130] The IVL properties of the devices were measured. The CIE data, the maximum emission wavelengths λ max and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the devices was set to 1000 cd / m² 2measured. The lifetime (LT95) is the time it takes to maintain an initial luminance of 10000 cd / m². 2 required to decrease to 95% of the original luminance. The data were recorded and are shown in Table 7. Table 7 Device data for Example 4 and comparison examples 4 to 7 Device number CIE (x, y) l max (nm) FWHM (nm) LT95 (h) Example 4 (0,346, 0,632) 531 37,5 1159 Comparative example 4 (0,342, 0,634) 529 37,9 829 Comparative example 5 (0,353, 0,623) 531 58,9 1001 Comparative example 6 (0,352, 0,623 528 60,3 910 Comparative example 7 (0,355, 0,621) 531 59,5 940

[0131] As can be seen from the data in Table 7, the lifetime of example 4 reaches 10000 cd / m². 2 1159 hours, which represents a significant improvement compared to examples 4 to 7. The lifetime of example 4 is 39.8% longer than that of example 4 without special substituents on ligand L. a , almost 15.8% and 23.3% higher respectively than those of comparison examples 5 and 7 without cyanosubstitution at ligand L b and 27.4% longer than that of comparison example 6 without special substituents on the ligands L a and L bFurthermore, the FWHM of Example 4 is only 37.5 nm and is much lower than about 59 nm of the comparison examples 5 and 7, which is very rare for green phosphorescent devices.

[0132] If there is no cyanosubstituent on ligand L b The lifetime of comparison example 5 with a specific substitution at ligand L is given. a only 10% longer than the lifetime of comparison example 6 without a specific substitution at ligand L a , whereas, if there is a cyano substituent on the ligand L b There is a lifetime of example 4 with a specific substitution at ligand L. a 39.8% longer than that of comparison example 4 without a specific substitution at ligand L a Similarly, with the same ligand L a the lifetime of example 4 with a cyanosubstitution at ligand L b15.8% longer than that of comparison example 5 without cyanosubstitution at ligand L b , while the lifetime of comparison example 7 with a fluorine substitution at ligand L b is somewhat shorter than that of comparative example 5. All the above results show that the metal complex containing the ligand L a with the specific substitution and the ligands L b with the cyanosubstitution contained in the present disclosure, excellent device performance, in particular a greatly improved device lifetime, can be achieved.

[0133] In summary, it can be stated that the metal complexes of the present disclosure, the ligands L a and L bWith certain substitutions, these metal complexes can be used as light-emitting materials in light-emitting layers of electroluminescent devices. In combination with host materials of different structures, the metal complexes can all achieve excellent performance. The metal complexes of the present disclosure containing the ligands L a and L b With certain substitutions, the FWHMs of the corresponding devices can be maintained at a high level and the device lifetime can be significantly improved. Furthermore, the metal complexes of the present disclosure can also greatly improve the sublimation yield and the evaporation temperature, exhibiting enormous advantages and a broad perspective in industrial applications.
