Abstract
Description
[0001] The invention relates to the field of packaging, in particular food packaging and / or liquid packaging, more specifically to closures, for example closures for beverage containers, especially for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. It relates to devices and methods according to the preambles of the patent claims.
[0002] Beverage containers, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, are often sealed with closures that include a closure body (also called a screw cap or cap) and a tamper-evident ring (also called a tamper-evident band or tamper-evident band). Such closures are often one-piece (integrally molded) components made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), or one-piece (integrally molded) components where the cap and tamper-evident band are made of polypropylene (PP) and an integrated seal, which may be made of a different material. Closures that consist of a one-piece (integrally molded) component and a separately manufactured seal are also common, particularly when the closure body and tamper-evident band are made of polypropylene (PP), while the seal may be made of a different material. However, the closure body and the guarantee band or the entire closure can also be made of one or more other polymer materials.
[0003] The closure body comprises an internal thread which cooperates with an external thread formed on a neck of the container, the neck having an opening. In an initial state or in an initial position of the closure body, the container is closed by the lid, the closure body closing the opening of the container, and the lid and the tamper-evident band are connected to one another, e.g. by a perforation between the lid and the tamper-evident ring, for example by a plurality of easily tearable connection points. Furthermore, the tamper-evident band is in a position in which it can be rotated about the container axis and encloses the neck, a tamper-evident ring of the container, such as a circumferential projection on the neck of the container, preventing upward movement of the tamper-evident band.
[0004] To open the initially sealed container, the cap is rotated relative to the container (untwisted; unscrewed; rotated in the opening direction) to increase the distance between the cap and the tamper-evident band, thus separating the cap from the tamper-evident ring by tearing the connection points. After further unscrewing, the cap is separated from the container. This could result in the lid being lost, which could contribute to environmental pollution.
[0005] To reduce such environmental pollution, measures can be taken to ensure that a cap of the type described remains on the container, in particular that it remains connected to the tamper-evident band. The cap should therefore be a capless cap.
[0006] Such closures are known, for example, from US 5,215,204, US 6,474,791, US 2018 / 0370701 A1, WO 2020 / 201 227 A1.
[0007] EP 3 882 172 B1 shows a closure with two connecting arms between a cap body and a tamper-evident ring, wherein a first second part of a blocking member, designed as a pin and connected to the cap body, interacts with a second part of the blocking member, connected to the two connecting arms, in order to hold the cap body in the open state.
[0008] From WO 2023 / 174934 A1 a closure cap is known in which two retaining bands connect a cylindrical threaded part to a guarantee ring, and in which, in an open position, a locking lug protruding from the cylindrical threaded part projects into a groove provided on the guarantee ring.
[0009] EP 3 889 063 B1 shows an arrangement comprising a container with a threaded neck and a lid for closing the container, which lid has a cylindrical lid body and an integrity ring as well as two connecting arms which connect the integrity ring to the lid body via a joint.
[0010] A connection between the cap (closure body) and the guarantee band by means of two retaining bands appears to be particularly advantageous for many applications.
[0011] In order to move from the initial position (the cap closes the opening of the container's neck) to a final position in which the cap, interacting with the neck, is stabilized with the opening released, the cap is tilted away from the opening after being unscrewed, and in the process, the retaining bands are twisted, i.e., each individually twisted. Instead of describing the movement of the closure body as "tilting" or "tilting away," one could also describe it as "pivoting" or "pivoting away." The rotation or pivot axis for this can run approximately through the locking element, for example, parallel to an axis connecting the other ends of the retaining bands. However, in order to meet certain safety standards regarding the cap's captivity, the retaining bands must be quite stable so that they only break when relatively large forces are applied, allowing the cap to be separated from the tamper-evident band and thus from the container. For this reason, certain material thicknesses or cross-sectional areas of the retaining straps cannot be undercut. However, this results in relatively high forces required to twist the retaining straps to reach their final position. This makes using the closure less comfortable.
[0012] The inventor recognized this problem and developed a new type of closure.
[0013] The problem is solved by a closure according to claim 1. The invention further relates to a combination according to claim 13 and a method according to claim 14.
[0014] In this closure, the closure body has a locking element to which the two retaining straps are attached. These straps are attached to the tamper-evident band at their respective opposite (first) ends. In a transition area between the locking element and the respective retaining strap, the closure has a hinge point with a notch.
[0015] Due to the notch, the joint may be (locally) easier to deform, as the material thickness at the notch may be reduced, particularly relative to the adjacent retaining strap (or its second end) and the adjacent area of the locking element. This may also facilitate the angling of the adjacent retaining strap (at its second end) relative to the locking element (at the area adjacent to the transition area). Furthermore, the notch may promote the formation of kinks at the joint.
[0016] It is therefore possible to make it easier (simpler) for a user who moves the closure from the (closed) initial position to the (stabilised) final position, in which the closure body is stabilised in a tilted position by the interaction of the locking element with the neck of the container, to reach the final position, particularly because a relatively small amount of force is sufficient. Because the retaining straps have to be relatively stable in order to sufficiently guarantee that the cap cannot be lost, they can only be twisted with a relatively high amount of force to allow the closure body to be tilted (pivoted) far enough to reach the final position. The notch can therefore ensure that the retaining straps do not need to be twisted as much to reach the final position, meaning less force is required.
[0017] In particular, it can be provided that in the transition areas, notches are present exclusively in a lower end region of the respective transition area, i.e., in an end region of the respective transition area facing the guarantee strip. Above the notch, however, for example, in an upper end region of the transition area facing the closure body, the respective transition area can have a greater material thickness. As a result, the transition area, for example due to the upper end region, can contribute to the captivity of the closure body.It can be avoided that the transition area, due to the notch, enables the closure body to be separated too easily from the guarantee band, i.e. with too little force, so that the captivity would not be sufficiently ensured, at least not according to certain, typically specified standards, such as a tear-off force of at least 25 N.
[0018] The invention may in particular relate to a closure for a container, the container having a neck forming an opening and having a guarantee ring, and the closure comprising: - a closure body comprising a head plate and a circular surrounding jacket; - a tamper-evident band having one or more retaining elements for cooperating with the tamper-evident ring so that when the closure body is removed from the tamper-evident band, the tamper-evident band remains on the neck; - a locking element for cooperating with the neck to lock the closure body in an end position of the closure body in which the closure body is tilted away from the opening and releases the opening; - two straps;where the coat - has an upper edge and a lower edge, the upper edge being adjacent to the head plate; and - has an internal thread on an internal surface for interaction with an external thread of the container.
[0019] Furthermore, the guarantee strip has an upper edge which faces the lower edge, wherein a plurality of easily tearable first connection points are provided between the upper edge and the lower edge of the jacket, each of which forms a connection between the guarantee strip and the jacket, which is separated from the guarantee strip when the closure body is removed.
[0020] And the locking element is connected to the lower edge of the casing, and the two retaining bands each have a first and a second end, wherein the first ends are connected to the guarantee band and the second ends are each connected to the locking element in a transition region, wherein the transition regions each form a joint point which has a notch.
[0021] The above-mentioned effects, in particular the ability to bring the locking body into its final position by applying only minimal force, and to enable comfortable handling of the locking mechanism, can be achieved in this way.
[0022] The container can in particular be a beverage container, for example a beverage bottle.
[0023] The container can be a container of the type described above. It can therefore be made of a polymer, for example, in particular polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
[0024] The container can in particular be designed in one piece (integral).
[0025] The container may in particular have a container body and a neck adjoining it.
[0026] The closure can be a closure of the type described above. For example, it can be formed in one piece (integral).
[0027] The closure can be an injection-molded part, in particular consisting of a polymer, in particular a thermoplastic.
[0028] The polymer may contain color pigments.
[0029] The casing may have knurling. This can simplify opening and closing the container.
[0030] The closure body can in particular be a screw cap.
[0031] The closure may have an opening torque 1, which may be the maximum torque typically required at the beginning of a first opening, ranging between 0.55 Nm and 2.4 Nm.
[0032] The closure can also have an opening torque 2 of, for example, between 0.22 Nm and 2.3 Nm. Opening torque 2 can be the torque required for the initial separation of the closure body and the tamper-evident band (while maintaining the connection via the retaining bands, of course), i.e., for the connection points to break (see also the connection points below).
[0033] The closure can be a 1-start closure with an application angle (for initial application to the neck) of between 400° and 1000° or a 2-start closure with an application angle of between 150° and 400° or a 3-start closure with an application angle of between 120° and 300°.
[0034] The internal thread may have a thread depth (which may be the maximum radial difference within the threaded area) of between 0.4 mm and 1.3 mm.
[0035] The tamper-evident band can be a so-called flexible band, i.e. it can have an outer ring and a foldable inner ring, wherein the outer ring has the first connection points and the inner ring can be folded into the outer ring, and wherein the inner ring can have, in particular as the aforementioned retaining elements, a plurality of centering elements, also known as "flaps", by means of which the tamper-evident band is centered relative to the neck and which, by interacting with the tamper-evident ring, make it more difficult to remove the tamper-evident band from the neck.
[0036] In other embodiments, the tamper-evident band has inwardly protruding cams as retaining elements. Such tamper-evident bands are also known as interference bands.
[0037] The locking element can in particular interact with an outer surface of the neck.
[0038] In one embodiment, the locking element has a bottom side or an outer edge for cooperating with the neck to lock the closure body in the end position, wherein in the end position the bottom side or the outer edge cooperates with the neck, in particular wherein in the end position the bottom side or the outer edge is supported on an outer surface of the neck.
[0039] In one embodiment, the locking element has an outwardly projecting projection at an end facing the tamper-evident band. Such a radial projection allows a larger opening angle of the closure body to be achieved in the end position. The closure body can then be folded particularly far away from the opening in the end position. In particular, the underside or the outer edge can be provided on the projection.
[0040] The locking element can be manufactured by injection molding using sliders, even in the aforementioned case where it has the projection, and especially in combination with the above-described case where the tamper-evident band is a flexible band. This combination (locking element with projection created by sliders and flexible band) is unusual, but feasible, regardless of the presence of the notches and the presence of retaining bands.
[0041] The end position can, in particular, be a stabilized end position of the closure body. In this case, a force must be applied to move the closure body out of the end position. In particular, a holding force caused by deformation of the closure body, especially by deformation of the retaining straps and the transition areas, must be counteracted.
[0042] In the final position, the locking body can be folded away from the opening.
[0043] It can be provided that the two second ends are arranged between the two first ends with respect to a circumferential coordinate of the closure. If the first ends are designated as e1 and the second ends as e2, they are distributed over the circumference of the closure according to e1-e2-e2-e1, as is also known, for example, from the aforementioned WO 2020 / 201227 (e.g., therein in Fig. 2 and Fig. 8). This contrasts with a distribution according to e1-e2-e1-e2. Note: In the aforementioned WO 2020 / 201227, however, the closure body is moved into the final position instead of being tilted or pivoted into the final position.
[0044] In one embodiment, the joints are easier to deform than the retaining straps and the locking element due to the notches.
[0045] In one embodiment, the notches promote the formation of kinks in the transition areas, so that in the final position between the respective retaining strap and the locking element, a kink can be formed at the respective joint point, or such a kink forms when the closure body is brought into the final position.
[0046] In one embodiment, the notches facilitate a change in angle that occurs when the closure body is brought into the final position at the respective joint point between an adjacent section of the respective retaining strap and a respective adjacent region of the locking element. In particular, the change in angle can be a change from a (substantially) straight angle to a (significantly) obtuse angle, in particular to an angle between 130° and 165°. The notches can, in particular, simplify the angling between the adjacent section of the respective retaining strap and the respective adjacent region of the locking element.
[0047] In one embodiment, the notches reduce the amount of force required to bring the closure body into the final position.
[0048] In one embodiment, the notches reduce the torsion of the retaining straps in the final position. As described above, the retaining straps require less twisting to reach the final position when the notches are present than when the notches are not present.
[0049] In one embodiment, the notches each form a region in which there is a smaller material thickness than at the respective adjacent second end and at a respective adjacent region of the locking element.
[0050] In one embodiment, due to the notches, an outer dimension, in particular an outer diameter, of the closure is smaller in the respective transition region than at the respective adjacent second end and at a respective adjacent region of the locking element. The above-described angle change or angling is simplified in this way because, to a certain extent, space is available where the two affected parts (adjacent section of the respective retaining strap at the second end and the respective adjacent region of the locking element) must be able to approach each other for the angle change.
[0051] In one embodiment, the transition regions each have a lower end facing away from the lower edge, with the notches extending to the respective lower end. This makes deformations at the lower ends relatively easy to achieve, or particularly large deformations occur there when the closure body is brought into its final position.
[0052] In one embodiment, the transition regions each have a lower end region facing away from the lower edge, with the notch located in the lower end region. In particular, the transition region can have a material thickness in a section of the transition region above the notch that is greater than a material thickness in the notch. And in particular, the transition regions can be free of notches outside their lower end regions.
[0053] In this way, the captivity can be ensured despite the notches. This allows for greater material thicknesses and thus greater tear resistance throughout, from the retaining strap through the transition area to the locking element, despite the notch in the transition area.
[0054] Furthermore, the transition regions can in particular each have an upper end region facing the lower edge, in which the transition region has a material thickness which corresponds at least to a material thickness of the adjoining retaining strap at its second end and at least to the material thickness of the locking element at its region adjoining the transition region.
[0055] In this way, as just explained, the indestructibility can be ensured despite the notches.
[0056] In one embodiment - one or more easily tearable second connection points are provided between each of the retaining bands and the upper edge, each of which forms a connection between the respective retaining band and the guarantee band, which is severed when the closure body is removed from the guarantee band.
[0057] In one embodiment - one or more easily tearable third connection points are provided between each of the retaining bands and the lower edge, each of which forms a connection between the respective retaining band and the closure body, which is severed when the closure body is removed from the guarantee band.
[0058] In one embodiment, the closure is a one-piece injection-molded part. Such closures can be readily and cost-effectively manufactured using an injection molding process. The combination comprises a closure of the type described herein and a container, the container having the neck forming the opening and having the external thread and the tamper-evident ring.
[0059] The method for producing a closure described herein comprises at least one of the following steps: - Manufacturing an injection mold for producing the closure by injection molding; - Carrying out an injection molding process
[0060] The production of the injection mold may in particular comprise the creation of projections of the injection mold (not to be confused with the projection of the locking element) by means of which the notches of the closure are formed.
[0061] Carrying out the injection molding process can in particular comprise injecting a polymer, in particular HDPE or PP, into or into the injection mold.
[0062] The invention further includes devices having features that correspond to the features of described methods and, conversely, methods having features that correspond to the features of described devices.
[0063] Further embodiments and advantages emerge from the dependent claims and the figures.
[0064] The subject matter of the invention is explained in more detail below using exemplary embodiments and the accompanying drawings. They show schematically: Fig. 1 a three-dimensional representation of a closure, in front view; Fig. 2 a three-dimensional representation of a detail of the closure of Fig. 1, in front view slightly from below; Fig. 3 a three-dimensional representation of the closure from Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, in side view; Fig. 4 a three-dimensional representation of a detail of the closure of Fig. 1 to 3, in oblique side view; Fig. 5 a three-dimensional representation of a closure of another type, in front view slightly from below; Fig. 6 a three-dimensional representation of the closure from Fig. 5, in a front bottom view; Fig. 7 a three-dimensional representation of a detail of the closure of Fig. 5 and 6, in a front top view.
[0065] The described embodiments are examples and have no limiting effect.
[0066] Fig. 1 to 4 show a closure with two notches in three-dimensional representation: Fig. 1 in a front view; Fig. 2 a detail in a front view slightly from below; Fig. 3 in a side view; Fig. 4 a detail in an oblique side view.
[0067] This closure is now based on the Fig. 1 to 4 described.
[0068] The closure 1 comprises a closure body 2 and a tamper-evident band 3, as well as a locking element 4 and two retaining bands 5. It can be applied in a known manner to a container neck with an opening, for example, to a PET bottle. The closure is a one-piece injection-molded part made of a thermoplastic, for example, HDPE or PP.
[0069] The closure body 2 has a head plate 21 and a circularly extending skirt 22 with an upper edge 22a and a lower edge 22b, with the head plate 21 adjoining the upper edge 22a. On its inner surface 22c, the skirt 22 has an internal thread 22d.
[0070] The tamper-evident strip 3 is designed as a flexible strip and has a plurality of inwardly projecting flaps 31; however, an interference strip could alternatively be provided. The tamper-evident strip 3 has an upper edge 33a, and between the upper edge 33a and the lower edge 22b of the casing 22, a plurality of easily tearable first connection points 71 are provided, each of which forms a connection between the tamper-evident strip 3 and the casing 2.
[0071] The retaining bands 5 each have a first end 51 and a second end 52, wherein the first ends 51 are connected to the guarantee band 3 and the second ends 52 are each connected to the locking element 4 in a transition region 61.
[0072] The locking element is also connected to the lower edge 22b of the casing 22.
[0073] The transition regions 61 each form a joint 62 having a notch 65. The notches 65 are each provided in a lower end region 61b of the respective transition region 61, and in each upper end region 61a of the transition regions 61, a greater material thickness is present than in the corresponding notch 65.
[0074] The notches 65 can, among other things, make it easier for a user to move the closure 1 from the initial position shown in the figures to a final position in which the container opening is exposed and the closure body is stabilized in a folded-over position (the head plate 21 then points downwards rather than upwards as in the initial position). To reach the final position, the retaining straps 5 are twisted (when pivoting the closure body 2), which requires a not inconsiderable expenditure of force, since the retaining straps 5 must be quite stable because they must withstand a tear-off force of, for example, at least 25 N for the closure body 2 to be considered captive.
[0075] Due to the notches 65, the articulation points 62 can be more easily deformed, so that the retaining straps 5 need to be twisted less than without the notches 65. Furthermore, kinking at the articulation points 62 can be promoted and an angle change at the respective articulation point 62 can be promoted, which takes place when the closure body 2 is moved into the end position between the respective retaining strap 5 (at its second end 52) and the area of the locking element 4 adjacent to the transition area 61.
[0076] The notches 65 are in the form of areas of (locally) reduced material thickness, with (locally) reduced outer diameter.
[0077] The locking element 4 has a projection 41 (outward, i.e. in the radial direction) which cooperates with the neck in the end position, whereby, depending on the conditions or embodiment, it is a bottom side 41b or an outer edge 41a of the locking element 4 (or, more precisely, of the projection 41) which cooperates with the neck in the end position.
[0078] In Fig. Figures 5 to 7 show a different type of closure. This one does have a notch, but it is located at a different location on the closure than in Fig. 1 to 4 and also has a different technical effect than the notches of the closure described above.
[0079] This closure has features that are at least partially similar to those of the closure from Fig. 1 to 4, are provided with the same reference symbols, which are, however, "crossed out" to distinguish them, such as "Closure 1'" instead of "Closure 1", etc.
[0080] In this closure 1', the provision of a transition area is optional, and as in Fig. 5 to 7, the second ends 52' of the retaining straps can thus be directly connected to the locking element 4'.
[0081] Furthermore, it is optional for this closure 1' to provide an outwardly projecting projection on the locking element 4', and as in Fig. 5 to 7, such a device does not need to be present at all.
[0082] The notch 65' is arranged (with respect to a circumferential coordinate) centrally between the second ends 52' of the retaining straps 5'. This notch 65' ensures that in the end position there is not a single, approximately point-like contact point between the neck and the locking element 4', but two; Fig. 7 with the reference numerals 65a', 65b'. The contact points can, as in Fig. 7, be formed on edges that delimit the notch 65', in particular in the circumferential direction. Such multi-point contact between the neck and the locking element 4', in particular between the guarantee strip 3' and the locking element 4', leads to increased stability of the final position, on the one hand because contact exists at several spaced locations and / or on the other hand because there is a larger contact area.
[0083] Regarding the other features of the closure 1', which do not differ from the closure 1 of Fig. 1 to 4, please refer to the above description ( Fig. 1 to 4).
[0084] The closure 1' also has second connection points 72' and third connection points 73' between the retaining bands and the guarantee band 3' and between the retaining bands and the closure body 2'. Such additional connection points can optionally also be provided for the closure 1 made of Fig.1 to 4 should be provided.
