[0027] Exemplary embodiments will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0028] An object of the present disclosure is to provide a black taillight assembly with improved efficiency. More specifically, an object of the present disclosure is to provide a black taillight assembly with an efficiency between 2x and 10x that of conventional black taillights.

[0029] The present disclosure provides a black taillight in which a phosphor layer is sandwiched between a short-pass filter and a long-pass filter. Shorter-wavelength light (e.g., blue) passes through the short-pass filter and excites the phosphor layer. The phosphor layer converts the shorter-wavelength light to longer-wavelength light (e.g., red or yellow for a taillight). This light is then passed through the long-pass filter. When viewed from outside the vehicle, the long-pass filter and short-pass filter block the passage of outside light, so the assembly appears black.

[0030] The present disclosure includes embodiments of a black taillight assembly for a vehicle. Such a black taillight assembly may appear black or very dark when off and illuminate when off. Such a black taillight may, for example, illuminate red and / or amber depending on its function, e.g., as a turn signal or brake light. The principles of the present disclosure may also be applied to other exterior lights of a vehicle, e.g., a headlight or a side marker light.

[0031] Fig. 1 shows a side view of a vehicle 10 having a headlight assembly 20. The headlight assembly 20 of the present disclosure may include one or more releasable retainers that hold a housing of the headlight assembly in position on the vehicle 10, but may also be releasable to allow the housing to be displaced in response to the application of an impact force. The springs 142 may be configured to urge the second fixed support portion 140 away from the component-side portion 70 when the releasable bracket 30 is in the retained position. The springs 142 may therefore prevent rattling or clattering between the two portions. In some embodiments, the springs 142 may be integrally molded with the second fixed support portion 140.Alternatively or additionally, the springs may comprise other arrangements, such as coil springs or a compressible foam located between the fixed support part 40, 140 and the component-side part 70.

[0044] As shown in the cross-sectional views of Fig. 9C (Section AA of Fig. 9B) and Fig. 9E (section BB of Fig. 9D), the catch surface 58 may form an angle of greater than 90 degrees relative to the carrier 51 of the clip 50. This angle of greater than 90 degrees may cause the carrier 51 to deflect downward to release the latch portion 54 from the cage section 71 in response to the application of an impact force.

[0045] Fig. Figure 10 shows a perspective view of portions of the releasable retainer 30 separating from each other in response to an impact force (the impact force is visualized as an arrow). As shown, the impact force causes the carrier 51 of the clip 50 to bend downward and the locking portion 54 to disengage from the cage portion 71, allowing the releasable retainer 30 to separate from the component-side portion 70 and thus move into the released configuration. The dashed line XX indicates the direction in which the fastener (e.g., screw or bolt) is inserted for attachment to a vehicle structure, symbolized as a hatched rectangle.

[0046] Fig. 11A-11B show additional views of the cage portion 71 of the releasable retainer 30, including the rectangular opening 72 configured to receive the clip 50 and guide arms 52. Fig. 11B also shows the lip 74 of the cage portion 71 facing away from an opening of the rectangular opening 72 to receive and retain the clip 50.

[0047] Fig. 12A-12D show the releasable retainer 30 in progressive steps of detachment in response to an impact force on the headlamp assembly. Fig. 13A - 13D show the first deformable bracket 32 progressively deforming in response to the impact force on the headlight assembly. Fig. 14A through 14D illustrate the second deformable mount 34 progressively deforming in response to the impact force applied to the headlight assembly, in accordance with one aspect of the present disclosure.

[0048] In some embodiments, the releasable retainer 30 may be configured to release when an impact force of greater than 55 Newtons is applied to the headlight assembly 20. In some embodiments, the retainers 30, 32, 34 may be designed to withstand an impact force of up to 600 Newtons without breaking. For example, an impact force of up to 600 Newtons may cause the first deformable retainers 32 and the second deformable retainers 34 to deform but not break. The deformable retainers 32, 34 can be returned to their original position and continue to be used after being deformed (i.e., after being subjected to an impact force of up to 600 Newtons). Forces greater than 600 Newtons may result in permanent damage to one or more of the retainers 30, 32, 34.
