Description

TECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to fuse devices. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a fuse socket cover. BACKGROUND

[0002] Some well-known fuses are red P versions, meaning they contain red phosphorus. Well-known red P fuses are round. Accordingly, the sockets for such fuses are also round. For example, Fig. 1A is a perspective view of a round fuse in a round socket cover, which is known in the art and contains red phosphorus. In this context, Fig. 1B a top view of the round socket cover of Fig. 1A, and Fig. Figure 1C is a schematic cross-sectional view of the round fuse in the round socket cover of Fig. 1A.

[0003] Red-phosphorus-free versions of fuses, i.e., free of red phosphorus, are also known in the art and are advantageous for environmental reasons. However, known fuses that are free of red phosphorus are rectangular. Accordingly, the sockets for such fuses are also rectangular. Fig. For example, Figure 2A is a perspective sectional view of a rectangular fuse in a known rectangular fuse holder cover that is free of red phosphorus. In this context, Fig. 2B is a sectional side view of the rectangular fuse in the rectangular socket cover of Fig. 2A, and Fig. Figure 2C is a schematic cross-sectional view of the rectangular fuse in the rectangular socket cover of Fig. 2A.

[0004] Previous approaches to manufacturing red, P-free versions of round fuses resulted in failures during short-circuit testing. In particular, when testing a red, P-free version of a round fuse, either a fuse holder cover or a fuse body broke.

[0005] In view of the above, there is a constant need for improved devices. SUMMARY

[0006] This brief summary is intended to present, in a simplified form, a selection of approaches described further below in the detailed description. This brief summary is not intended to identify essential features or essential characteristics of the claimed subject matter or to serve as an aid in determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0007] In some embodiments, a fuse device according to the present disclosure may include a rectangular fuse and a round fuse socket cover, which may include a rectangular socket for receiving the fuse. The fuse socket cover and the fuse may be free of red phosphorus, and the rectangular socket may occupy a percentage of a surface area or volume of the fuse socket cover below a predetermined threshold that prevents a reduction in the interrupting capacity of the round fuse socket cover. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0008] Exemplary embodiments of a fuse socket cover in accordance with the present disclosure are described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. However, the fuse socket cover may be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein. Rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will explain certain exemplary aspects of a fuse socket cover to those skilled in the art.

[0009] As disclosed herein, the fuse socket cover may be free of red P, i.e., free of red phosphorus, and may be round. Nevertheless, the fuse socket cover may be used in conjunction with a fuse that is rectangular or a fuse that is round. For example, when the fuse socket cover is used in conjunction with a rectangular fuse, the fuse socket cover may include a rectangular receptacle capable of receiving and housing the rectangular fuse. However, when the fuse socket cover is used in conjunction with a round fuse, the fuse socket cover may include a round receptacle capable of receiving and housing the round fuse.

[0010] Importantly, the fuse-socket cover disclosed herein can be modular. As such, the fuse-socket cover can be manufactured in the same way for use in conjunction with the rectangular fuse and the round fuse, with modification required only for the shape of the socket therein. For example, the fuse-socket cover can be molded using a mold in which a molding tool or mold capillary can be modified to form the receptacle in a rectangular shape or a round shape. Similarly, in 3D printing, the fuse-socket cover can be printed using a model in which the container is either rectangular or round.

[0011] When the fuse holder cover is manufactured for use in conjunction with the rectangular fuse, a wall thickness of the fuse holder cover may advantageously be thicker than the wall thickness of devices known in the art to improve an interrupting capacity of the fuse holder cover compared to devices known in the art. In particular, the receptacle of the fuse holder cover, when rectangular, may occupy a low enough percentage of a surface area and / or volume of the fuse holder cover such that the walls of the fuse holder cover surrounding the receptacle have at least a predetermined thickness to achieve at least a predetermined interrupting capacity.

[0012] In some embodiments, the receiving socket may include a vent to further enhance the interrupting capacity of the fuse socket cover. Specifically, the container may include one or more vents along an outer perimeter of an exterior region of the socket to vent exhaust gas and / or air pressure within the socket and prevent its buildup therein. For example, when the fuse is placed in the socket, an exterior region of the socket may be closed and / or covered by the fuse therein, except for the one or more vents on the outer perimeter of the exterior region of the socket, which may remain open.

[0013] Known fuses contain yarn, sand filler, and / or ceramic paper to absorb heat during a short circuit. Because the interrupting capacity of the fuse-socket cover disclosed herein is improved as described above, a fuse can be used in conjunction with the fuse-socket cover disclosed herein that uses larger yarn compared to prior art devices. Because the interrupting capacity of the fuse-socket cover disclosed herein can be improved as described above, the sand filler and / or ceramic paper can be eliminated or removed from fuses used in conjunction with the fuse-socket cover disclosed herein, resulting in ease of manufacture and cost savings.

[0014] In some embodiments, the fuse socket cover may include a nub or notch on an outer surface of the fuse socket cover to assist in aligning the fuse relative to the fuse socket cover receptacle during assembly. If the receptacle is rectangular, the fuse must be aligned relative to it to fit properly, and the nub or notch may identify a longitudinal direction of the receptacle for fuse alignment without trial and error.

[0015] Fig. 3A is an exploded perspective view of a fuse assembly according to disclosed embodiments. The fuse assembly may include a fuse socket cover and a fuse, both of which may be free of red phosphorus. As can be seen, the fuse socket cover may be round and include a rectangular socket for receiving the rectangular fuse. As can also be seen, the fuse socket cover may include a nub on an outer surface of the fuse socket cover that assists in aligning the fuse relative to the socket of the fuse socket cover during assembly.

[0016] Fig. Figure 3B is a perspective view of the fuse holder cover of Fig. 3A. As can be seen, the receptacle can open toward the bottom of the fuse holder cover. As can also be seen, the fuse holder cover receptacle can occupy a low enough percentage of a surface area and / or volume of the fuse holder cover such that the walls of the fuse holder cover surrounding the receptacle have at least a predetermined thickness to achieve at least a predetermined breaking capacity.

[0017] Fig. 3C is a perspective view of the securing device of Fig. 3A. As can be seen, an outer region of the socket can be closed and / or covered by the fuse located therein when the fuse is inserted into the socket.

[0018] Fig. 3D is a schematic view of the fuse holder cover of Fig. 3A from below. It is understood that the Fig. 3D illustrated dimensions of the fuse holder cover, the fuse holder cover receptacle, and the fuse holder cover walls are only exemplary and that other dimensions fall within the scope and spirit of the disclosed embodiments.

[0019] Fig. Figure 4A is a perspective view of a fuse holder cover in accordance with the disclosed embodiments. As shown in Fig. As seen in the embodiment shown in Figure 4A, a receptacle of the fuse holder cover may include a vent to enhance the interrupting capability of the fuse holder cover. In particular, the receptacle may include one or more vent openings along an outer perimeter of an exterior region of the receptacle to vent and prevent the buildup of exhaust gas and / or air pressure within the receptacle.

[0020] Fig. 4B is a bottom view of the securing device of Fig. 4A. As can be seen, when a fuse is inserted into the socket, the outer area of the socket can be closed and / or covered by the fuse inside, with the exception of the one or more vent holes on the outer perimeter of the outer area of the socket, which can remain open.

[0021] Fig. Figure 4C is a schematic view of the fuse holder cover of Fig. 4A from below. It can be seen that the Fig. 4C are exemplary only, and that other dimensions are within the spirit and scope of the disclosed embodiments.

[0022] Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a fuse holder cover in accordance with the disclosed embodiments. As shown in Fig. 5, the fuse socket cover may include a notch on an outer surface of the fuse socket cover to assist in aligning a fuse relative to a receptacle of the fuse socket cover during assembly.

[0023] When an element or step is mentioned herein in the singular and followed by the word "a" or "an," this should be understood as not excluding the plurality of elements or steps unless such exclusion is expressly stated. Furthermore, references to "one embodiment" of the present disclosure should not be understood as excluding the existence of further embodiments that also have the mentioned features.

[0024] Although reference is made to specific embodiments in this disclosure, numerous modifications, variations, and changes to the described embodiments are possible without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure as defined in the appended claims. Accordingly, it is intended that this disclosure not be limited to the described embodiments, but that it have the full scope defined by the language of the following claims and their equivalents.
