Abstract

A membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for a fuel cell and electrolyzer is provided. The MEA comprises a first electrode layer, a second electrode layer opposite the first, a polymer electrolyte membrane extending between the first and second electrode layers, and a gas diffusion layer (GDL) adjacent to the first and second electrode layers. A bifunctional catalyst comprising a noble metal supported on a metal oxide compound is arranged within a polymer electrolyte membrane, the first and second electrodes, and / or the GDLs. The noble metal comprises Pt and / or Pd. The metal oxide compound comprises CeO₂, CexZryO₄, MnO₂, CeEO, MnEOx, and / or CoEOx. The ratio of noble metal to metal oxide compound is 1 to 80 percent by weight.
