Description

[0001] The invention relates to a plug insert according to the preamble of independent claim 1.

[0002] These types of connector inserts typically have multiple contacts and are required to connect to stranded electrical conductors of a specified gauge. The connector inserts are then usually inserted into connector housings with predetermined dimensions to be mated with corresponding plugs. State of the art

[0003] In the prior art, a variety of connection devices for electrical conductors, in particular stranded conductors, are known.

[0004] From the publication DE 101 45 324 C1, an electrical connection element for contacting stranded conductors is known, the end of which has a sawtooth-like structure onto which a spring-loaded sleeve, widened by means of a wedge, can be slid.

[0005] The publication EP 1 742 299 A2 criticizes the high number of individual parts required for the function of this state of the art and sets itself the goal of significantly reducing this number.

[0006] This publication proposes an improved connection device for stranded conductors. Each strand is housed in an insulating body, with a chamber containing a sliding slide element. The slide element, along with a clamping sleeve and the inserted stranded conductor, is slid onto the connection area of a pin contact. The strand of the conductor is clamped between a clamping shoulder of the pin contact and the clamping sleeve, creating an electrical connection. At its cable connection point, the slide element features a laterally inclined, V-shaped recess. When inserted, a flat tool, such as a screwdriver, can be inserted into this recess to pry the inserted slide element out of the insulating body. A beveled edge is provided on the inside of the housing wall in each chamber to facilitate the use of this tool.

[0007] A disadvantage of this state of the art is the space it requires. Ultimately, a high packing density of plug contacts in the connector insert is desired, which is not always adequately achieved by the aforementioned state of the art. Conversely, the connector inserts are sometimes too large and therefore do not fit into the connector housings in which they are intended to be installed. Task

[0008] The object of the invention is therefore to provide a design for a field-assemblable connector insert for stranded conductors that reduces its installation space. In other words, the connector insert should be as compact as possible.

[0009] The problem is solved by the subject matter of the independent claims.

[0010] A plug insert is designed for use in a plug housing and serves to connect several stranded electrical conductors to metallic plug contacts of the plug insert.

[0011] The plug insert has a contact carrier.

[0012] The contact carrier has a plug-in side and a connection side opposite the plug-in side.

[0013] Furthermore, the contact carrier has several contact chambers running in the plugging direction and connecting the plugging side with the connection side for receiving the plug contacts.

[0014] The plug insert has the aforementioned plug contacts, one of which is arranged in each of the aforementioned contact chambers, with a plug area belonging to the respective plug contact, pointing in the plug-in direction and accessible on the plug-in side.

[0015] Each of the plug contacts has a connection area opposite the plugging area, which has a point at the end and at least one clamping shoulder and an undercut thereafter.

[0016] The contact carrier has a slide element arranged in the respective chamber in the plugging direction for each of the chambers.

[0017] The sled element has a through-hole running in the direction of insertion for the insertion of one of the stranded conductors.

[0018] The connector insert has a clamping sleeve for each of the plug contacts, aligned in the insertion direction and attached – in particular by rotation – or at least attachable to the slide element. The slide element, with the clamping sleeve, can be slid onto the contact area of the plug contact and also removed from it. When slid onto the contact, a radial, fixing force acts on the stranded conductors inserted between the clamping sleeve and the clamping shoulder.

[0019] The contact carrier has a lateral actuation window for each of the contact chambers, running in the direction of insertion.

[0020] Each slide element has an actuating element accessible through the respective actuating window, in order to be pushed onto and pulled off the connection area.

[0021] Advantageous embodiments of the invention are specified in the dependent claims and the following description.

[0022] The lateral actuation eliminates the space required in the prior art for rear actuation and for levering the slide element out of the contact carrier. The latter, in particular, was especially space-consuming in the prior art because the required ramp, especially the V-shaped recess, naturally extends "inwards," i.e., creates additional space requirements perpendicular to the insertion direction.

[0023] In contrast, the invention has the advantage that the plug insert with a predetermined number of plug contacts and a predetermined so-called "conductor cross-section", i.e. the thickness of the stranded conductors to be connected, can be inserted into a plug housing whose dimensions - especially measured perpendicular to the plugging direction - are smaller than would have been possible under the same conditions in the prior art.

[0024] The rotary mounting of the clamping sleeve to the slide element also creates a particularly space-saving arrangement. Due to the rotation around its own axis, especially a cylindrical axis, the associated mounting elements do not require any additional space. These elements consist specifically of angled mounting tabs at the ends of the clamping sleeve, which is preferably cylindrically bent and made of sheet metal, and corresponding mounting recesses on the slide element.

[0025] In a preferred embodiment, the clamping sleeve can further have a preferably inclined, continuous separation slot to exhibit particularly high elasticity, especially in different areas, which is independent of other elasticities. This allows it to be held / attached to the slide element, as described above, and, on the other hand, to exhibit improved and ideally optimal elasticity relative to the connection area for electrical contact with the stranded conductor.

[0026] In a preferred embodiment, the contact carrier has four side walls extending in a plugging direction and connecting the plugging side to the connection side. Each lateral actuation window can then be arranged in one of the side walls.

[0027] In a preferred embodiment, the connection area of the respective plug contact can be conical.

[0028] In a preferred embodiment, at least the connection area and in particular even the entire plug contact can be designed to be rotationally symmetrical.

[0029] In a preferred embodiment, the connection area can be conical in shape.

[0030] This is particularly advantageous because it allows the respective strand to be "spliced" during the aforementioned insertion process, i.e., the individual wires are bent apart from a center point, e.g., from the tip of the connection area - especially in all directions.

[0031] In a preferred embodiment, the clamping shoulder can be configured as an annular edge. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the clamping shoulder can be configured as a sharp edge.

[0032] This allows for a gas-tight, electrically conductive connection between the stranded conductor and the plug contact. Any existing oxide layer on the stranded conductor is broken up during the plugging process, and / or such a layer cannot form in the first place. Furthermore, the clamping shoulder of the plug contact provides considerable pull-out force when plugged in, ensuring the stranded conductor is securely held in the plug contact.

[0033] In a preferred embodiment, the clamping sleeve can be hollow cylindrical and can in particular be made of sheet metal.

[0034] In a preferred embodiment, the clamping sleeve can have a preferably inclined and / or stepped separation, in particular a separation slot, which significantly improves its spring properties.

[0035] In a preferred embodiment, the clamping sleeve can be attached to the slide element by rotary turning, in particular by turning about its axis of symmetry.

[0036] In particular, the clamping sleeve can have several, especially four, angled ends with which it engages in a recess of the slide element by the aforementioned rotary turning and locks the clamping sleeve on the slide element.

[0037] In a preferred embodiment, the actuating element can be formed by an actuating contour. This makes the plug insert particularly inexpensive and easy to manufacture.

[0038] The actuation contour can, for example, consist of an actuation slot or an actuation contour of the slide.

[0039] An actuating slot, as an actuating contour, saves space and also has the advantage that the connection mechanism can be operated with a slotted screwdriver, meaning that the slide element can be pushed into the contact carrier with a slotted screwdriver. This also benefits field assembly.

[0040] In a preferred embodiment, the respective plug-in area of the plug contacts can be designed as a pin contact and / or as a socket contact.

[0041] In a further preferred embodiment, the plug insert can have a protective element projecting beyond the connection side, separating the connected stranded conductors from each other even outside the contact chambers.

[0042] In an advantageous further development, the protective element can have at least one horizontal and at least one vertical partition, wherein the horizontal and vertical partitions intersect at right angles.

[0043] In particular, the protective element can be made in one piece. It is especially preferred that the protective element and the contact carrier are made in one piece, particularly as a single unit.

[0044] In a preferred embodiment, the clamping sleeve can have a continuous, preferably inclined and / or stepped, separating slot to provide the necessary elasticity for said fixing and electrical connection of the stranded wire / stranded conductor at the connection area of the plug contact.

[0045] In a preferred embodiment, the slide element can have a substantially cuboid base body and, adjoining it in the plug-side direction, a hollow cylindrical projection over which the clamping sleeve can be placed.

[0046] In a preferred embodiment, the slide element can have several fastening features, each with a fastening recess, in the plug-side direction.

[0047] In a preferred embodiment, the clamping sleeve can have several outwardly angled mounting tabs at its end. These can serve for the aforementioned rotary fastening to the mounting surfaces.

[0048] This is particularly advantageous because the clamping sleeve can first be placed onto the hollow cylindrical molding. It can then be rotatably attached to the slide element by rotating it around the axis of the hollow cylindrical molding and / or its own axis of symmetry, by moving its mounting tabs into the respective mounting recess of the respective mounting molding and releasably fixing them therein, e.g., by clamping and / or snapping. Example of implementation

[0049] An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings and is explained in more detail below. The drawings show: Fig. 1a a plug insert in an oblique top view; Fig. 1b cut the plug insert vertically; Fig. 1c cut the plug insert horizontally; Fig. 2. The plug insert in a top view of the horizontal section; Fig. 3a, b the plug insert in an oblique top view of the horizontal section; Fig. 4a, b the plug insert in an exploded view; Fig. 5 a slide element and a clamping sleeve of the plug insert as separate parts; Fig. 6a - c the slide element with the clamping sleeve in the unattached, attached and fastened state; Fig. 7a - j an assembly process of a connector, comprising the connector insert and a connector housing.

[0050] The figures contain simplified, schematic representations. In some cases, identical reference symbols are used for elements that are the same but may not be identical. Different views of the same elements may be scaled differently. Directional indications such as "left," "right," "up," and "down" are to be understood in relation to the respective figure and may vary from one representation to the actual object depicted.

[0051] The Fig. Figures 1a - c show a plug insert.

[0052] The Fig. Figure 1a shows the plug insert in an oblique top view.

[0053] The plug insert has a contact carrier 1, which has an essentially cuboid shape.

[0054] The contact carrier 1 has a plug-in side 11 and a connection side 12 opposite the plug-in side 11. Furthermore, the contact carrier 1 has four side walls 13, 13', 14, 14' extending in one plug-in direction and connecting the plug-in side 11 to the connection side 12. These side walls are arranged in parallel pairs, namely two parallel narrow side walls 13, 13' and two parallel wide side walls 14, 14'. On the plug-in side, the contact carrier 1 has a coding / polarization element 19 to prevent incorrect mating.

[0055] Furthermore, the contact carrier 1 has several contact chambers 10 extending in the insertion direction and connecting the insertion side 11 with the connection side 12, which are located in the Fig. 1b and Fig. are designated 1c. Furthermore, in the Fig. 1b and Fig. Figure 1c shows two plug contacts 2, each housed in one of the contact chambers 10, in cross-section. The plug contact 2 shown above in the drawing is particularly clear in this view because the section runs through its axis of symmetry. The plug contact 2 shown below it is offset from the first, so that it is not fully visible in this cross-sectional view. However, it is identical in design to the aforementioned plug contact 2.

[0056] Each plug contact 2 has a plug area 21 and a connection area 22 opposite the plug area 21.

[0057] The plug insert has the aforementioned plug contacts 2, one of which is arranged in each of the aforementioned contact chambers 10 with the plug area 21 belonging to the respective plug contact 2 pointing in the plugging direction and accessible on the plugging side 11.

[0058] The connection area 22 of each plug contact 2 has a tip 221 at its end, to which a conical section 222 adjoins. Furthermore, the connection area 22 has at least one circularly circumferential clamping shoulder 224 with an adjoining, plug-side oriented undercut 226.

[0059] The plug contacts 2 shown here are pin contacts, since their insertion area 21 is designed as a contact pin. However, in a different configuration, the insertion area could also be a socket. The respective plug contact would then be a socket contact.

[0060] In addition, the plug contact 2 has a locking collar 213 between its plug-in 21 and its connection area 22 for locking onto an elastically bendable locking arm 133 of the contact carrier 1 projecting into the contact chamber 10.

[0061] The contact carrier 1 further has a slide element 3 arranged in the respective contact chamber 10 in the plugging direction for each of the contact chambers 10.

[0062] The slide element 3 has a through-opening 30 extending in the insertion direction for the insertion of one stranded conductor 62 as shown below.

[0063] The plug insert has a clamping sleeve 4 for each of the plug contacts 2, aligned in the plugging direction and attached to the slide element 3, which is already in the Fig. 2 can be seen in section 2. The slide element 3 can be slid onto the connection area 22 of the plug contact 2 with the clamping sleeve 4 and can also be pulled off again from the connection area 22.

[0064] It is particularly evident from the Fig. 2. It is easy to imagine how a stranded conductor 62 (shown below), inserted from the left through the through-opening 30 into the clamping sleeve 4 in the drawing, is "spliced" by the tip 221 of the conical section 222 of the connection area 22, i.e., how the individual strands of its wire are bent apart in all radial directions. When the slide element 3 is subsequently inserted and the clamping sleeve 4 is pushed onto the connection area 22, the stranded conductor 62 is clamped between the sharp-edged clamping shoulder 224 of the clamping sleeve 4. In this process, any oxide layers on the respective strand of the stranded conductor 62 are broken up or prevented from forming in the first place. Thus, an ideally gas-tight, electrically conductive connection can be created between the wire and the plug contact 2.

[0065] In the extended state, a radial, fixing force also acts on a stranded conductor 62 inserted between the clamping sleeve 4 and the clamping shoulder 224. This increases the potential pull-out force, i.e., the force required to pull the stranded conductor 62 out at the connection side despite this fixation, is very high, or the stranded conductor 62 can no longer be pulled out without damage.

[0066] The contact carrier 1 has a lateral actuation window 130, 130' extending in the insertion direction for each of the contact chambers 10. Each lateral actuation window 130, 130' is arranged in one of the side walls, in this case in one of the narrow side walls 13, 13'. In another embodiment, one or more actuation windows could alternatively or additionally be arranged in one or more wide side walls 14, 14'.

[0067] In any case, the actuation windows 130, 130' run in the direction of insertion.

[0068] Each slide element 3 has an actuating element 31 accessible through the respective actuating window 130, 130', in order to be pushed into the contact carrier 1 and thus, with its clamping sleeve 4, onto the connection area 22 of the plug contact 2 and / or pulled away from the connection area 22 again. In the case shown here, the actuating element 31 is an actuating slot.

[0069] The Fig. 3a and Fig. Figure 3b shows the contact carrier 1 with two plug contacts 2 inserted into each of its contact chambers 10 and a slide element 3 inserted into each chamber, to which a clamping sleeve 4 is attached. The actuating element 31, designed as an actuating slot, is shown on the slide element 3. Fig. 3b also indicates the blade 51 of an actuating tool, namely a slotted screwdriver 5, with which the slide element 3 can be pushed deeper into the contact chamber 10 or also - at least partially - out of the contact chamber 10 again by means of its actuating element 31 which can be accessed through the actuating window 130.

[0070] This type of actuation ensures that the contact carrier 1, and therefore also the plug insert, has a particularly slim design. Ultimately, this actuation device requires no additional space.

[0071] The plug insert also has a feature in the Fig. 1a and Fig. 1b particularly easily recognizable protective element 18 projecting beyond the connection side 12 of the contact carrier 1, which separates the connected and subsequently shown conductors 60 with the stranded conductors 62 from each other even outside the contact chambers 10.

[0072] In this embodiment, the protective element 18 has a horizontal 181 and a vertical 182 partition wall that intersect at right angles.

[0073] In particular, the protective element 18 can be made in one piece. It is especially preferred that the protective element 18, together with the contact carrier 1, be made in one piece, particularly in one piece.

[0074] The protective element 18 prevents accidental insertion of the slide elements 3 and protects their mechanism, e.g. if the plug insert falls, etc.

[0075] The Fig. 4a and Fig. Figure 4b shows the plug insert in an exploded view from different perspectives.

[0076] The following is shown and labelled in the Fig. 4a from left to right, first the sled element 3.

[0077] The contact sleeve 4 is shown below.

[0078] Furthermore, the plug contact 2 is shown with its plugging 21 and connection area 22 as well as its locking collar 213.

[0079] Furthermore, the contact carrier 1 is shown with an as yet unoccupied contact chamber 10, into which the previously assembled components mentioned above are to be inserted. The other contact chambers 10 are already populated in the same manner.

[0080] The Fig. Figure 5 shows the slide element 3 with the clamping sleeve 4 to be attached to it as separate parts in an enlarged section of the Fig. 4a. The slide element 3 has a substantially cuboid base body 32 and adjoining a hollow cylindrical projection 35. Furthermore, the slide element 3 has, in the plug-in direction, a fastening projection 34 with a fastening recess 340 at each of the many corners of the hollow cylindrical projection 35.

[0081] Furthermore, the clamping sleeve 4 has four outwardly angled fastening tabs 44 evenly distributed at equidistant angular intervals around the circumference.

[0082] Furthermore, the clamping sleeve 4 has a continuous, obliquely extending separation slot 410, which can be seen more clearly here and in the following illustrations. Since the clamping sleeve 4 is made of an elastic material, in particular elastic sheet metal, this separation slot 410 provides elasticity for the application described above, especially in individual sections of the clamping sleeve 4. Thus, the clamping sleeve 4 can be stretched more at its plug-side end than at its opposite, fixed connection-side end. This simultaneously enables its own aforementioned mechanical fixation to the slide element 3 and the aforementioned force-fit electrical contact of the strand of the stranded conductor 62 of the respective conductor 60 (shown below) at and with the respective plug contact 2.

[0083] As in the Fig. 6a, Fig. 6b and Fig. As shown in Figure 6c, the clamping sleeve 4 with its cylindrical cavity 40 is first removed from the space in the Fig. The position shown in 6a is placed over the hollow cylindrical shape 35, so that it is in the position shown in the Fig. The clamping sleeve 4 is located in the position shown in Figure 6b and is secured against lateral displacement. The clamping sleeve 4 is then rotated about its cylindrical axis – which is simultaneously the cylindrical axis of the hollow cylindrical projection 35 – until its end-angled mounting tabs 44 are received in the respective mounting recesses 340 of the respective mounting projection 34 and clamp and / or lock there, as shown in the Fig. 6c is shown.

[0084] Furthermore, the actuating element 31, in the form of the aforementioned actuating slot 31, is clearly visible and in the Fig. 6a and Fig. 6c is also referred to. It should be noted that the actuating slot 31 is not visible or not explicitly shown in some representations of the slide element 3.

[0085] The Fig. Figures 7a - j show an assembly sequence of a complete connector, including the connection of a multi-core electrical cable 6, which has several cores 60, each of which has a stranded conductor 62 and a core insulation 61 surrounding the stranded conductor 62.

[0086] The Fig. Figure 7a shows the contact carrier 1 with four contact chambers 10 and four plug contacts 2 to be inserted into the contact chambers 10. Of course, in other versions a different number of contact chambers 10 and plug contacts 2 is also possible, provided that each contact chamber 10 borders an outer wall 13, 13', 14, 14' in at least one direction.

[0087] The Fig. Figure 7b shows how the plug contacts 2 are received into the contact carrier 1 and are therefore no longer visible, at least except for their locking collar 213, and are locked with their locking collar 213 onto each of the elastically bendable locking arms 133 of the contact carrier 1 which project laterally into the contact chamber 10.

[0088] The Fig. Figure 7c shows the contact carrier 1, in which three slide elements 3, each with an attached clamping sleeve 4, have already been inserted into a contact chamber 10. The fourth slide element 3, with its attached clamping sleeve 4, has not yet been inserted into the remaining contact chamber 10.

[0089] The Fig. Figure 7d shows the contact carrier 1, which is equipped with the four plug contacts 2 and the four slides 3, as well as with the clamping sleeves 4 attached thereto. It is easily recognizable here, as well as in the following illustration, that the slide elements 3, which protrude from the contact carrier 1 on the connection side, are arranged with their actuating slot 31 at the connection-side edge of the actuating window 130.

[0090] The Fig. Figure 7e shows the contact carrier 1 in the same state, but from a different perspective, together with a cable 6 to be connected. This cable 6 has an unspecified outer sheath, from which it is partially stripped, i.e., "stripped". Underneath appear individual conductors 60, which are formed from stranded conductors 62, i.e., strands, and a cylindrical insulation 61 surrounding the strands. The ends of the conductors 60 are stripped, i.e., they are freed from the insulation 61, so that the stranded conductors 62 can be electrically connected to the plug contacts 2, i.e., mechanically and electrically connected to them.

[0091] In the Fig. 7f and Fig. Figure 7g shows from two different perspectives how the stranded conductors 62 are inserted into the respective through-openings 30 of the sled elements 3.

[0092] As described above, a tool, e.g., a slotted screwdriver 5, was inserted through the actuating window 130 into the actuating slot 31. Using this tool 5, the slide element 3 could then be moved in the insertion direction, i.e., to the right in the drawing. As already mentioned, the stranded wire / wire conductor 62 is thus pushed onto the insertion area 21 over the clamping shoulder 224 by means of the elastically expanding clamping sleeve 4 and is thereby, as described in detail above, mechanically and electrically excellently connected to the plug contact 2.

[0093] The Fig. 7h, Fig. 7i, Fig. Figures 7j show how the assembled plug insert, i.e., connected to the cable 6, is inserted into a plug housing 8.

[0094] The connector housing 8 has a base housing 81, which has a contact carrier receptacle 810 and a cable outlet 86 connected to it, which has a cable entry opening 860, which is connected to the contact carrier receptacle 810.

[0095] In its assembled state, which is in the Fig. As shown in Figure 7j, the plug insert is positively engaged in the contact carrier receptacle 810 of the base housing 81. On the plug-in side, the coding / polarization element 19 protrudes from the contact carrier receptacle 810. On the connection side, the cable 6 is guided through the cable outlet 86.

[0096] Even though the figures show various aspects or features of the invention in combination, it is apparent to the person skilled in the art – unless otherwise stated – that the combinations shown and discussed are not the only possible ones. In particular, corresponding units or sets of features from different embodiments can be interchanged.
