Abstract
Description
Background of the invention 1. Field of the invention
[0001] The present invention relates generally to wiper arrangements and more specifically to a wiper coupling adapter and a wiper arrangement containing the same. 2. Description of the affected state of the art
[0002] Conventional wiper arrangements known in the prior art comprise a type of wiper assembly mounted on a wiper arm, which in turn is mounted adjacent to a windshield and is pivotally driven to exert a reciprocating motion on the wiper assembly across the windshield. The wiper assembly includes a rubber wiping element that is in contact with the windshield over the surface to be wiped. Generally, the wiper assembly can be classified into one of two categories, commonly referred to as "tournament-style" wiper assemblies and "bar-blade" wiper assemblies.
[0003] Blade-type wiper assemblies comprise a single elongated, homogeneous strip that forms a resilient backbone. The backbone is operatively coupled to the wiper arm at a central position via a defined connection design. In a blade-type wiper assembly, the reciprocating wiper arm applies a downward force and moves the wiper assembly across the surface to be wiped, which is generally the windshield. The backbone is curved along a single plane, which is the same plane of curvature as that defined by the windshield. The wiper element is rigidly attached to the backbone. An example of a blade-type wiper assembly can be found in U.S. Patent No. 6,675,433, filed on January 13, 2004, with Stewart et al.was granted and which was transferred to the applicant of the present invention, Trico Products Corporation.
[0004] While blade-type wiper assemblies are limited to use with a specific type of wiper arm, the coupler of a blade-type wiper assembly is generally designed for use with only one type of wiper arm. A typical adapter connection, either a lateral clamp with a lateral pull or a central clamp, connects the coupler to the wiper arm's mounting point and can be detached during wiping. Therefore, it is desirable to provide a coupling adapter that improves the retention of the wiper coupler on the wiper arm during operation.
[0005] Document DE 10 2006 015 783 A1 discloses a windshield wiper assembly, in particular a wiper connector and a wiper assembly comprising the same for connecting the wiper assembly to the wiper arm of a vehicle. The wiper assembly for use in conjunction with a wiper arm, which includes a mounting member including a guide rail defined by a base, rails extending therefrom, a curved tab extending outwards from the base, and guides extending linearly downwards from the rails, comprises a wiping element configured to contact a surface to be wiped, a multi-member assembly configured to hold the wiping element, and a wiper connector connected to the assembly and configured to detachably fasten the assembly to a wiper arm mounting member, wherein the wiper connector comprises a pair of side walls.each having a flange configured to connect to a portion of the guides of the wiper arm mounting member, the wiper connecting member further comprising a raised platform and a retaining surface, each arranged between the side walls, the retaining surface interacting with a portion of the side walls to define a support configured to receive the guide rail of the wiper arm mounting member, the wiper connecting member further comprising an opening arranged between the raised platform and the retaining surface, configured to receive a portion of the curved tab of the wiper arm mounting member, each of the side walls further comprising an opposing surface with a recessed section that interacts with the retaining surface to define the support.wherein the recessed sections are partially defined by lips on the opposing surfaces, the lips being designed to provide a fixed stop relative to the rails of the wiper arm mounting member in order to allow a detachable connection between the multi-member assembly and a wiper arm mounting member conventionally used for connection with a rigid wiper assembly.
[0006] Accordingly, there is a need in the prior art for a coupling adapter that operatively attaches a blade-type wiper assembly to a wiper arm. Furthermore, there is a need in the prior art for a coupling adapter that operatively engages with a wiper arm designed for a blade-type wiper assembly. Summary of the invention
[0007] The present invention overcomes many limitations and disadvantages of the prior art in a wiper coupling adapter. The wiper coupling adapter comprises a pair of longitudinally extending side walls, each of which includes a post extending laterally towards the other and adapted to engage operationally with a wiper assembly. The side walls comprise recessed sections adapted to engage operatively with rails of a wiper arm mounting element, each of the recessed sections having a rib adapted to provide a fixed stop with respect to one of the mounting element's rails and a flange extending outward over the lip to define ends adapted to provide a releasable engagement with the mounting element, a locking bridge extending laterally between each of the flanges to form a solid bridge between them, the locking bridge extending laterally outward over each of the flanges and interacting with each of the flanges to define the ends adapted to engage with a trailing edge of guides on the mounting element's rails. The wiper coupling adapter also includes a cover part which is positioned between the side walls to define a support which is adapted to operatively receive a path between the rails of the fastening element.
[0008] One feature of the wiper coupling adapter comprises a raised platform positioned between the side walls, which interacts with the side walls and the cover plate to define an opening adapted to receive a section of a curved tab from the fastener, and a snap-in bridge located in the opening. Extending from the raised platform, the snap-in bridge comprises a projecting body and a head located at one end of the projecting body. The head has a curved upper surface and a lower surface, the lower surface including a lip that extends from it. This lip is adapted to receive a section of the curved tab from the fastener to prevent unwanted rotating release of the wiper coupling adapter from the fastener.
[0009] Another feature of the wiper coupling adapter includes the cover part, which comprises a cantilevered beam positioned between each of the flanges to define a distal end of the cover part, and wherein it has a retaining tab adapted to provide an interference fit against the path of the fastener when the cantilevered beam is positioned within the path of the fastener to allow for a tolerance clearance between the wiper arm and the wiper assembly.
[0010] Another feature of the wiper coupling adapter comprises a locking bridge extending laterally between each of the flanges to form a completely solid bridge, which is provided and adapted laterally outwards over each flange to engage with the trailing edge of guides on the rails of the fastening element in order to secure the wiper assembly against lateral pulling or disassembly. One or more of these features can be combined in the wiper coupling adapter of the present invention.
[0011] Thus, one advantage of the present invention is that a new wiper coupling adapter is provided for operational engagement with a beam-type wiper assembly on a wiper arm. Another advantage of the present invention is that the wiper coupling adapter provides improved retention force for a blade over existing connections. Yet another advantage of the present invention is that the wiper coupling adapter is non-conventional for connecting the wiper assembly to the wiper arm and improves the retention of the wiper arm during operation. A further advantage of the present invention is that the wiper coupling adapter remains attached to the wiper arm, with the wiper assembly first locking and snapping into the adapter to secure the wiper arm to the wiper assembly.A further advantage of the present invention is that the wiper coupling adapter can have a completely solid bridge at one end, which secures the wiper assembly against lateral pulling for disassembly. Another advantage of the present invention is that the wiper coupling adapter can have a locking bridge, which securely locks the wiper arm in place and prevents it from being twisted off the wiper assembly. A further advantage of the present invention is that the wiper coupling adapter can have a retaining tab, which applies pressure to the wiper arm to allow for a tolerance between the wiper arm and the wiper assembly.

[0013] Referring now to the figures in which the same reference symbols are used to denote the same structure, a section of a vehicle is schematically shown at 10 in the Fig. Figure 1 shows the vehicle 10 comprising a body panel 12, a roof 14, and a pair of laterally spaced front or “A”-pillars 16 extending between the roof 14 and the body panel 12. The A-pillars 16, the roof 14, and the body panel 12 work together to define a general rectangular opening 18 in which a curved or “backward-curved” glass windshield 20 is supported.
[0014] A wiper system is generally included at 22 in the Fig. 1 and is used to clean the windscreen 20. The wiper system 22 comprises a wiper arm, generally specified at 24, and a wiper assembly, generally specified at 26. Those skilled in the field will understand that a wiper system 22 may comprise more than one wiper arm 24 and more than one wiper assembly 26. By way of an example, and as described in the Fig. As specified in 1, a wiper system 22 can comprise a pair of wiper arms 24 and wiper assemblies 26 corresponding to the driver's side and the passenger's side of the vehicle 10.
[0015] With reference to the Fig. The wiper arm 24 comprises a pivoting end 28, which is operatively attached to an electric motor (not shown) to move the wiper arm 24 back and forth across the surface to be wiped. The wiper arm 24 further comprises an elongated body 30, which extends outwards from the pivoting end 28, and a fastening element 34, which is described in more detail below, at a free end of the elongated body 30. The elongated body 30 has a predetermined length to align the wiper assembly 26 across the appropriate surface area. It will thus be understood that the predetermined length of the elongated body 30 will vary depending on the surface area to be wiped.Furthermore, a person skilled in the art will understand that the elongated body 30 may be connected for movement away from the surface to be wiped, in order to facilitate replacement of the wiper assembly 26 when it is worn, or to perform maintenance or repair on the wiper system 22 or an adjacent area of the vehicle 10. In addition to these elements, the wiper arm 24 may also include a preloading element (not shown), such as a spring, to provide a preload force which facilitates contact between the wiper assembly 26 and the windshield 20 of the vehicle 10.
[0016] With reference to the Fig. The wiper arm 24 further comprises a fastening element, generally specified as 34, which is located on or adjacent to the end of the elongated body 30 opposite the pivoting end 28. The fastening element 34 is adapted to engage operatively with the wiper assembly 26, as will be described in more detail below. The fastening element 34 comprises a base 36 and a curved tab 38 that extends longitudinally outwards from the base 36 and has an opening 40 extending through it. The fastening element 34 further comprises a pair of rails 43 that extend from the base 36 and are aligned with each other. The base 36 and the rails 42 work together to define a path, generally specified at 44, to operationally accommodate a section of the wiper assembly 26, as will be described in more detail below. Each of the rails 42 comprises a guide 46, which extends linearly downwards relative to the rails 42. Each of the guides 46 comprises a guide edge 48 and a trailing edge 50, the function of each of which will be described in more detail below. The trailing edge 50 is angled relative to the base 36 such that the guide edge 48 and the trailing edge 50 form an acute angle. However, those skilled in the art will understand that the trailing edge 50 can also extend substantially perpendicularly relative to the base 36 without departing from the scope of the invention.
[0017] The wiper arm 24, which includes the fastening element 34 comprising the structure described above, is conventionally used for connection with a beam-type wiper assembly 26 and does not form part of this invention. Rather, those skilled in the field will understand that the present invention is a wiper coupling adapter and a beam-type wiper assembly, which are described in more detail below, which is operatively attached to the fastening element 34 (for example, in the following). Fig. 2, Fig. 3, Fig. 9, Fig. 10 and Fig. 11). It should also be understood that the wiper coupling adapter of the present invention can be used for mounting a wiper assembly of the Turnier type (not shown).
[0018] With reference to the Fig. 2 and Fig. The wiper assembly 26 comprises a wiper element, generally specified at 52, which is adapted to come into contact with the surface of the vehicle 10 to be wiped, in this representative example the windshield 20. The wiper assembly 26 also comprises a wiper coupler, generally specified at 53, which is connected to a beam 56, to be described, of the wiper assembly 26, and a wiper coupling adapter, generally specified at 54, which serves to connect the wiper coupler 53 of the wiper assembly 26 to the mounting element 34 of the wiper arm 24. The wiper assembly 26 also comprises at least one elongated beam, generally specified at 56, which defines a longitudinal axis and serves to support the wiper element 52.In the representative embodiment shown here, the beam 56 is generally rectangular in shape and extends longitudinally. The wiper element 52 is attached to a floor surface of the beam 56 by a suitable mechanism, such as an adhesive. However, those skilled in the art will understand from the following description that the beam 56 may be made from a single piece or may be defined by a pair of rails. The wiper assembly 26 also comprises a wing assembly, generally specified at 58, and a pair of end caps, generally specified at 60, both according to one embodiment of the present invention. It should be understood that the fastening element 34 is operatively attached to the beam-type wiper assembly 26 above the wiper coupling adapter 34.
[0019] As it is in the Fig. As shown in Figure 4, the wiper element 52 comprises an upper section 62 and a lower section 64, which are separated by a longitudinally extending bridge section 66. The bridge section 66 provides flexibility between the upper section 62 and the lower section 64 during the operational movement of the wiper assembly 26 across the surface to be wiped. The wiper element has a predetermined length according to a specific application and is often manufactured by an extrusion process, which allows the length of the wiper element 32 to be easily adapted or adjusted without a significant increase in manufacturing costs. While the wiping element 52 of the present invention is constructed of a flexible rubber, a person skilled in the art will understand that it may be constructed of any flexible material, such as a silicone or another polymer, without departing from the scope of the present invention.
[0020] The beam 56 can be constructed of a resilient, flexible material, such as spring steel or a polymer, and is adapted to apply a force from an intermediate position between its first and second longitudinal ends. More precisely, the beam 56 receives a force from the spring-loaded arm 24 at an intermediate position and distributes this force across the span of the beam 26 towards its first and second longitudinal ends. For this purpose, the beam 56 can be longitudinally curved with a predetermined radius of curvature. This predetermined radius of curvature is sometimes referred to in the relevant prior art as a "free-form" radius of curvature. The curvature of the beam 56 can accordingly be symmetrical or asymmetrical, depending on the force requirements and the contour of the windshield 20.The flexible, free-form, pre-curved beam 56 straightens when the wiper arm 24 applies a force to flatten the beam 56, guiding the wiper element 52 to come into contact with the windshield 20. The elongated beam 56 thus encompasses a free-form curvature, which ensures force distribution on windshields of varying shapes, resulting in proper coverage of the windshield.
[0021] As illustrated by the figures, the beam 56 has a substantially constant width and can have a constant thickness along its length between the first and second longitudinal ends. The constant width and thickness are adapted to provide high lateral and torsional stiffness to prevent lateral and torsional deflection, which would cause the wiper element 26 to catch or slip ("rattle") on the windscreen 20 during operation. The cross-section of the beam 56 thus has a generally rectangular outer profile, which makes the elongated beam 56 easier to manufacture.More precisely, if the beam 56 is constructed of a metal, such as spring steel, the tools and machines used to manufacture the beam 56 are less complex than those required to produce beams of varying widths and / or thicknesses. Furthermore, if the beam 56 is constructed of a polymer, such as a thermoplastic elastomer, the tools and machines for the extrusion process are likewise less complex than those used to produce beams of varying widths and / or thicknesses. However, a person skilled in the art will understand that the beam 56 shown here can have varying thicknesses and / or widths without deviating from the scope of the present invention.By way of example, the width and / or thickness of beam 56 can taper linearly from a beam center in a sinusoidal, parabolic, or asymmetrical shape. Furthermore, beam 56 is depicted in the figures as a single, integral piece of material such that it defines a unified cross-section. However, a person skilled in the art will understand that beam 56 can be formed in a single piece from a plurality of laminates.
[0022] With reference to the Fig. 2 and 5 to 11, the wiper assembly 26 further comprises a wiper coupling adapter, generally specified at 54, which is operatively mounted on the wiper coupler 53 of the wiper assembly 26 and which is used for a connection with the fastening element 34 of the wiper arm 74. As shown in one embodiment, the wiper coupling adapter 54 comprises a pair of side walls 74. Each of the side walls 74 defines a surface 76, which are generally arranged opposite each other. The opposing surfaces 76 comprise a recessed section 78, which is adapted to engage operatively with the rails 42 of the fastening element 34.The recessed section 78 is partially defined within the opposing surfaces 76 by a lip 80 which is adapted to provide a fixed stop in relation to the rails 42 of the fastening element 34 when the wiper assembly 26 is attached to the wiper arm 24.
[0023] Each recessed section 78 is further defined by a flange 82, which extends longitudinally outwards over the lip 80 to provide a releasable engagement with the fastening element 34. The wiper coupling adapter 54 further comprises a locking bridge 84, which extends between the flanges 82. The locking bridge 84 extends laterally outwards over the flanges 82 and has ends 86 which are adapted to engage with the trailing edge 50 of the guides 46, thereby facilitating the releasable engagement between the flange 82 and the guides 46 of the fastening element 34. The recessed section 78 further comprises at least one raised front face 88 to provide an interference fit between the wiper coupling adapter 54 and the rails 42 of the fastening element.Experts in the field will understand that the raised front 88 also provides additional support on the side walls 74 and that the recessed section 78 may include more than one raised front 88.
[0024] As it is in the Fig. 7 and Fig. As shown in Figure 8, each of the side walls 74 further comprises an inner surface 90, which are opposite each other. The inner surfaces 90 comprise posts 92, which extend transversely or laterally from their respective inner surfaces 90 and towards each other. The posts 92 engage operatively with aligned bores 94 of the wiper coupler 53 and provide a bearing surface around which the wiper coupling adapter 54 and the wiper coupler 53 can pivot relative to each other.
[0025] With reference to the Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Fig. 7, Fig. 8, Fig. 9, Fig. 10 to Fig. The wiper coupling adapter 54 further comprises a cover part, generally specified at 96, which is arranged between the side walls 74. The cover part 96 interacts with the recessed sections 78 of the side walls 74 to define a support, generally specified at 98, which is adapted to operatively receive the track 44 from the fastening element 34. The cover part 96 comprises a projecting beam 100, which is arranged between the flanges 82 to define a distal end 102 of the cover part 96. The projecting beam 100 comprises a raised section or a retaining tab 104, which is adapted to provide an interference fit against the track 44 of the fastening element 34 such that the projecting beam 100 is arranged completely within the track 44 when the wiper coupling adapter 54 is operatively attached to the wiper arm 24.
[0026] The cover section 96 further comprises a bridge 106, which is arranged between the side walls 74. The bridge 106 provides a stop to prevent unwanted separation between the wiper arm 24 and the wiper coupling adapter 54. More precisely, should the locking bridge 84 unintentionally detach from the guides 46, the bridge 106 stops the linear movement of the curved tab 38 relative to the wiper coupling adapter 54, thus preventing the wiper arm 24 from separating from the wiper assembly 26. Experts in the field will understand that the bridge 106 also provides structural support between the side walls 74.
[0027] As it is in the Fig. 5 and Fig. As shown in Figure 6, the wiper coupling adapter 54 comprises a raised platform 108, which is arranged between the side walls 74 and interacts with the side walls 74 and the bridge 106 to define an opening 110 between them. Those skilled in the field will understand that the raised platform 108 also provides structural support between the side walls 74. The wiper coupling adapter 54 further comprises an engaging element or snap-in bridge, generally specified as 112, which is arranged within the opening 110. The snap-in bridge 112 extends from the raised platform 108 and comprises a projecting body 114 and a head 116, which is arranged at the end of the projecting body 114. The head 116 also includes a lip 118 extending from it.The lip 118 is adapted to receive a section of the curved tab 38 in order to prevent unwanted release of the wiper coupling adapter 54 from the fastening element 34. The lip 118 provides a more precise press fit between a section of the curved tab 38 and the snap-in bridge 112.
[0028] In the company, the Fig. 9, Fig. 10 to Fig. 11 shows the attachment of the wiper assembly 26 to the wiper arm 24. As shown in the Fig. As shown in Figure 9, the wiper coupling adapter 54 is correctly assembled when the wiper coupling adapter 54 is inserted adjacent to the wiper coupler 53 and the aligned posts 90 are operatively engaged with the aligned bores 94. As shown in the Fig. As shown in Figure 11, the wiper assembly 26 is correctly attached to the wiper arm 24 by inserting the guides 46 against the locking bridge 84 and rotating the fastening element 34 towards the wiper coupling adapter 54. As shown in the Fig. As shown in Figure 10, the curved tab 38 is then inserted into the opening 110 to come into contact with the lip 118, locking the fastening element 34 to the wiper assembly 22 in place. Proper fastening of the wiper assembly 26 is further achieved when the track 44 of the fastening element 34 is inserted into the support 106. It should be understood that the locking bridge 84 at the end of the wiper coupling adapter 54 secures the wiper assembly 26 against lateral pulling for disassembly. It should also be understood that the retaining tab 104 applies pressure to the wiper arm 24 to allow for a tolerance clearance between the wiper arm 24 and the wiper assembly 26. It should further be understood that a completely solid bridge for the locking bridge 84 is optional.
[0029] On the other hand, a replacement of the wiper arrangement 26 of the present embodiment, which is in the Fig. 10 and Fig. As shown in Figure 11, this is achieved by applying a force to the head 116 in a direction towards the raised platform 108, causing the curved tab 38 to disengage from contact with the lip 118, and by rotating the wiper assembly 26 such that the raised platform 108 moves away from the curved tab 38. The wiper assembly 26 is removed from the wiper arm 24 when the locking bridge 84 disengages from the guides 46 at the trailing edge 50.
[0030] Another embodiment of the wiper coupling adapter 54 according to the present invention is generally described in 254 in the Fig. 12, Fig. 13, Fig. 14 to Fig. 15 specified, in which the same reference numerals, increased by 200 with reference to the embodiment of the invention, which is in the Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Fig. 7 to Fig. Figure 8 is used to denote the same structure. The wiper coupling adapter 254, as shown in the Fig. 12, Fig. 13, Fig. 14 to Fig. The structure shown in 15 is similar to that of the wiper coupling adapter 54, which is described in the Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Fig. 7 to Fig. 8 is shown.
[0031] Similar to the embodiment which is described in the Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Fig. 7 to Fig. As shown in Figure 8, the wiper coupling adapter 254 comprises a pair of side walls 274. Each of the side walls 274 defines a surface 276, which are generally arranged opposite each other. The opposing surfaces 276 include a recessed section 278, which is adapted to engage operatively with the rails 42 of the fastening element 34. The recessed section 278 is partially defined within the opposing surfaces 276 by a lip 280, which is adapted to provide a fixed stop with respect to the rails 42 of the fastening element 34 when the wiper assembly 26 is attached to the wiper arm 24.
[0032] Each recessed section 278 is further defined by a flange 282, which extends longitudinally outwards over the lip 280 to provide a releasable engagement with the fastening element 34. The wiper coupling adapter 254 also includes a locking bridge 284, which extends between the flanges 282. The locking bridge 284 extends laterally outwards over the flanges 282 and has ends 286 which are adapted to engage with the trailing edge 50 of the guides 46, thereby facilitating the releasable engagement between the flanges 282 and the guides 46 of the fastening element 34. The recessed section 278 further includes at least one raised front face 288 to provide an interference fit between the wiper coupling adapter 254 and the rails 42 of the fastening element 34.Experts in the field will understand that the raised front 288 also provides additional support on the side walls 274 and that the recessed section 278 may include more than one raised front 288.
[0033] As it is in the Fig. 14 and Fig. As shown in Figure 15, each of the side walls 274 further comprises an inner surface 290, which are opposite each other. The inner surfaces 290 comprise posts 292, which extend transversely from their respective inner surfaces 290 and towards each other. The posts 292 engage operationally with the aligned bores of the wiper coupler 53 and provide a bearing surface about which the wiper coupling adapter 254 and the wiper coupler 53 can pivot relative to each other. The inner surfaces 290 further comprise at least one support rib 294 to provide an interference fit between the side walls 274 and the wiper coupler 53, as well as to increase the structural integrity of the side walls 274. In one embodiment, the inner surface 290 comprises two support ribs 294.However, a person skilled in the art will understand that the inner surface 290 can comprise any number of supporting ribs 294 without deviating from the scope of the invention.
[0034] Again, with reference to the Fig. 12, Fig. 13, Fig. 14 to Fig. The wiper coupling adapter 254 further comprises a cover part, generally specified at 296, which is arranged between the side walls 274. The cover part 296 interacts with the recessed projections 278 of the side walls 274 to define a support, generally specified at 298, which is adapted to operatively receive the track 44 of the fastening element 34. The cover part 296 includes a projecting beam 300, which is arranged between the flanges 276 to define a distal end 302 of the cover part 296. The projecting beam 300 includes a raised section or retaining tab 304 which is adapted to provide an interference fit against the track 44 of the fastening element 34 such that the projecting beam 300 is arranged completely within the track 44 when the wiper coupling adapter 254 is operatively attached to the wiper arm 24.
[0035] The cover section 296 further comprises a bridge 306, which is arranged between the side walls 274. The bridge 306 provides a stop to prevent unwanted separation between the wiper arm 24 and the coupler 254. More precisely, should the locking bridge 284 unintentionally detach from the guides 46, the bridge 306 stops the linear movement of the curved tab 38 relative to the wiper coupling adapter 254, thus preventing the wiper arm 24 from detaching from the wiper assembly 26. Experts in the field will understand that the bridge 306 also provides structural support between the side walls 274.
[0036] The wiper coupling adapter 254 comprises a raised platform 308, which is arranged between the side walls 274 and interacts with the side walls 274 and the bridge 306 to define an opening 310 between them. Those skilled in the field will understand that the raised platform 308 also provides structural support between the side walls 274. The wiper coupling adapter 254 further comprises an engaging element or snap-in bridge, generally specified as 312, which is arranged in the opening 310. The snap-in bridge 312 extends from the raised platform 308 and comprises a projecting body 314 and a bulbous head 316, which is arranged at the end of the projecting body 314. The bulbous head 316 also includes a lip 318 extending from it.The lip 318 is adapted to receive a section of the curved tab 38 in order to prevent unwanted release of the wiper coupling adapter 254 from the fastening element 34. More precisely, the lip 318 provides an interference fit between a section of the curved tab 38 and the snap-in bridge 312.
[0037] The embodiment of the wiper arrangement 26 of the present embodiment, which is described in the Fig. 12, Fig. 13, Fig. 14 to Fig. The wiper assembly 26, as shown in Figure 15, is correctly assembled when the wiper coupling adapter 254 is inserted adjacent to the wiper coupler 53 and the aligned posts 292 are operatively engaged with the aligned bores 94. The wiper assembly 26 is correctly attached to the wiper arm 24 by inserting the guides 46 against the locking bridge 284 and rotating the fastening element 34 towards the wiper coupling adapter 254. The curved tab 38 is then inserted into the opening 310 to come into contact with the lip 318, locking the fastening element 34 in place with the wiper assembly 26. The wiper assembly 26 is further correctly attached when the track 44 of the fastening element 34 is inserted at the tip 306.It should be understood that the fully solid locking bridge 284 at the end of the wiper coupling adapter 254 secures the wiper assembly 26 against lateral pulling and disassembly. It should also be understood that the retaining tab 304 applies pressure to the wiper arm 24 to allow for a tolerance clearance between the wiper arm 24 and the wiper assembly 26.
[0038] On the other hand, a replacement of the wiper arrangement 26 of the present embodiment, which is in the Fig. 12, Fig. 13, Fig. 14 to Fig. As shown in Figure 15, this is achieved by applying a force to the knobby head 316 in a direction towards the raised platform 308, thereby releasing the curved tab 38 from contact with the lip 318, and rotating the wiper assembly 26 such that the raised platform 308 moves away from the curved tab 38. The wiper assembly 26 is then removed from the wiper arm 24 when the locking bridge 284 releases from the guides 46 at its trailing edge 50.
[0039] Another embodiment of the wiper coupling adapter 54 according to the present invention is generally described in 454 in the Fig. 16, Fig. 17, Fig. 18, Fig. 19, Fig. 20 to Fig. 21, in which the same reference numerals increased by 400 refer to the embodiment of the invention, which is in the Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Fig. 7 to Fig. Figure 8 is used to denote identical structures. The wiper coupling adapter 454, as shown in the Fig. 16, Fig. 17, Fig. 18, Fig. 19, Fig. 20 to Fig. 21 shows a similar structure to the wiper coupling adapter 54, which is shown in the Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Fig. 7 to Fig. 8 is shown.
[0040] Similar to the wiper coupling adapter 54, which is used in the Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Fig. 7 to Fig. As shown in Figure 8, the wiper coupling adapter 454 comprises a pair of side walls 474. Each of the side walls 474 defines a surface 476, which are generally arranged opposite each other. The opposing surfaces 476 include a recessed section 478, which is adapted to engage operatively with the rails 42 of the fastening element 34. The recessed section 478 is partially defined within the opposing surfaces 476 by a lip 480, which is adapted to provide a fixed stop with respect to the rails 42 of the fastening element 34 when the wiper assembly 26 is attached to the wiper arm 24.
[0041] Each recessed section 478 is further defined by a flange 482, which extends outwards over the lip 480 to provide a releasable engagement with the fastening element 34. The wiper coupling adapter 454 also includes a locking bridge 484, which extends between the flanges 482. The locking bridge 484 extends laterally outwards over the flanges 482 and has ends 486 which are adapted to engage with the trailing edge 50 of the guides 46, thereby facilitating the releasable engagement between the flanges 482 and the guides 46 of the fastening element 34. The recessed section 478 further includes at least one raised front face 488 to provide an interference fit between the coupler 454 and the rails 42 of the fastening element 34.Experts in the field will understand that the raised front face 488 also provides additional support to the side walls 474 and that the recessed section 478 may include more than one raised front face 488.
[0042] As it is in the Fig. As shown in Figure 18, each of the side walls 474 further comprises an inner surface 490, which are opposite each other. The inner surfaces 490 comprise posts 492, which extend transversely from their respective inner surfaces 490 and towards each other. The posts 492 engage operatively with the aligned bores 94 of the wiper coupler 53 and provide a bearing surface about which the wiper coupling adapter 454 and the wiper coupler 53 can pivot relative to each other.
[0043] With reference to the Fig. 16, Fig. 17, Fig. 18, Fig. 19, Fig. 20 to Fig. The wiper coupling adapter 454 further comprises a cover part, generally specified at 496, which is arranged between the side walls 474. The cover part 496 interacts with the recessed sections 478 of the side walls 474 to define a support, generally specified at 498, which is adapted to operatively receive the track 44 from the fastening element 34. The cover part 496 comprises a projecting beam 500, which is arranged between the flanges 476 to define a distal end 502 of the cover part 496. The projecting beam 500 includes a raised section or retaining tab 504 which is adapted to provide an interference fit against the track 44 of the fastening element 34 such that the projecting beam 500 is arranged completely within the track 44 when the wiper coupling adapter 454 is operatively attached to the wiper arm 24.
[0044] The cover section 496 further comprises a bridge 506, which is arranged between the side walls 474. The bridge 506 provides a stop to prevent unwanted detachment between the wiper arm 24 and the wiper coupling adapter 454. More precisely, should the locking bridge 484 unintentionally detach from the guides 96, the bridge 506 stops the linear movement of the curved tab 38 relative to the coupler 454, thus preventing the wiper arm 24 from separating from the wiper assembly 26. Experts in the field will understand that the bridge 506 also provides structural support between the side walls 474.
[0045] The wiper coupling adapter 454 comprises a raised platform 508, which is arranged between the side walls 474 and interacts with the side walls 474 and the bridge 506 to define an opening 510 between them. Those skilled in the field will understand that the raised platform 508 also provides structural support between the side walls 474. The coupler 454 further comprises an engaging element or snap-in bridge, generally specified as 512, which is arranged within the opening 510. The snap-in bridge 512 extends from the raised platform 508 and comprises a projecting body 514 and a head 516, which is arranged at the end of the projecting body 514. The head 516 also includes a lip 518 extending from it.The lip 518 is adapted to receive a section of the curved tab 38 in order to prevent unwanted release of the wiper coupling adapter 454 from the fastening element 34. More precisely, the lip 518 provides an interference fit between a section of the curved tab 38 and the snap-in bridge 512.
[0046] The embodiment of the wiper arrangement 26 of the present invention, which is described in the Fig. 1 and Fig. The wiper assembly 26, as shown in Figure 2, is correctly assembled when the wiper coupling adapter 454 is inserted adjacent to the wiper coupler 53 and the aligned posts 492 are operatively engaged with the aligned bores 94. The wiper assembly 26 is correctly attached to the wiper arm 24 by inserting the guides 46 against the locking bridge 484 and rotating the fastener 34 towards the wiper coupling adapter 454. The curved tab 38 is then inserted into the opening 510 to make contact with the lip 518, locking the fastener 34 to the wiper assembly 26 in place. Proper attachment of the wiper assembly 26 is further achieved when the track 44 of the fastener 34 is inserted onto the support 506.It should be understood that the locking bridge 484 at the end of the wiper coupling adapter 454 secures the wiper assembly 26 against disassembly due to lateral pulling. It should also be understood that the retaining tab 504 applies pressure to the wiper arm 24 to allow for a tolerance clearance between the wiper arm 24 and the wiper assembly 26.
[0047] On the other hand, a replacement of the wiper arrangement 26 of the present invention, which is described in the Fig. 1 and Fig.As shown in Figure 2, this is achieved by applying a force to the knobby head 516 in a direction towards the raised platform 508, thereby releasing the curved tab 38 from contact with the lip 518, and by rotating the wiper assembly 26 such that the raised platform 508 moves away from the curved tab 38. Distance between the wiper assembly 26 and the wiper arm 24 is achieved when the locking bridge 484 disengages from the guides 46 at its trailing edge 50.
[0048] The present invention has been described in a descriptive manner.
