[0038] Fig. 1A shows an occupant 20 in a seat 10. The seat 10 includes a seat bottom 12 and a backrest 14. In the example, the headrest 16 is supported on the backrest 14 by supports 18. Although a separate headrest 16 is shown in the exemplary seat 10, it should be understood that the headrest 16 may be integrally formed with the backrest 14; in this case, the supports 18 may be provided by a back frame of the seat.

[0039] A temperature control device 22 is arranged in a seating portion of the seat 10, such as the headrest 16. The temperature control device 22 is configured to direct temperature-controlled air toward a neck region 24 of the occupant 20. The neck region 24 may also include the head and upper back region of the occupant 20. In one embodiment, the temperature control device 22 is included in the headrest of a seat used in a coupe. The temperature control device 22 is attached to a supporting structure 19, such as the supports 18 or an interior part 54.

[0040] A schematic view of an exemplary tempering device 22 is shown in Fig. 2. The temperature control device 22 comprises a housing 26 having a guide section 28. The guide section 28 directs supply air I from a fluid inlet 30 through a heating module 36 arranged in the guide section 28 to a fluid outlet 32. A fan 38 is arranged in the guide section 28 to move the fluids through the housing 26. The fluid outlet 32 supplies the neck area 24 of the occupant with temperature-controlled air C.

[0041] An input device 42, such as a switch or touchscreen, communicates with the heating module 36 and the blower 38 to selectively supply the neck region 24 with a single or multi-stage supply of non-tempered or heated, tempered air. Additional input devices may be provided. A power source 46 is connected to the thermoelectric module 36 and the blower 38 and is operated via the input device 42. Wires (not shown) may be routed through the supports 18. A controller 44 controls the operation of the heating module 36 and the blower 38 based on the input signals from the input device 42. The controller 44 may include a processor and non-transitory memory storing computer-readable code for controlling operation. In various examples, the controller 44 is integrated into the seat bottom 12, the backrest 14, or the blower 38.

[0042] In terms of hardware architecture, such a controller 44 may include a processor, a memory, and one or more interfaces for input and / or output devices communicatively connected to one another via a local interface. The local interface may include, for example, but is not limited to, one or more buses and / or other wired or wireless connections. The local interface may include additional elements omitted for simplicity, such as controllers, buffers (caches), drivers, repeaters, and receivers to enable communication. Furthermore, the local interface may include address, control, and / or data connections to enable appropriate communication between the aforementioned components.

[0043] The control device 44 may be a hardware device for executing software, particularly stored software. The processor may be a custom or off-the-shelf processor, a central processing unit (CPU), a slave processor among several processors connected to the control unit, a semiconductor-based microprocessor (in the form of a microchip or chipset), or generally any device for executing software instructions.

[0044] The memory may include any single or combination of volatile memory elements (e.g., random access memory (RAM), such as DRAM, SRAM, SDRAM, and VRAM, etc.) and / or non-volatile memory elements (e.g., ROM, etc.). Furthermore, the memory may include electronic, magnetic, optical, and / or other types of storage media. The memory may also have a distributed architecture in which various components are located remotely from one another but are accessible from the controller 44.

[0045] The software in memory may include one or more separate programs, each containing an ordered collection of executable instructions for implementing logical functions. A system component embodied as software may also be conceived as a source program, executable program (object code), script, or any other unit containing a set of instructions to be executed. If conceived as a source program, the program is compiled using a compiler, assembler, interpreter, or the like, which may or may not be contained in memory.

[0046] The input / output devices that may be connected to the system I / O interface(s) may include input devices such as, but not limited to, a scanner, a microphone, a camera, a neighbor device, etc. Furthermore, the input / output devices may include output devices such as, but not limited to, a display, etc. Finally, the input / output devices may further include devices that communicate as both inputs and outputs, such as, but not limited to, a modulator / demodulator (for accessing another device, system, or network), a radio frequency (RF) or other transceiver, a bridge, a router, etc.

[0047] When the control device 44 is operating, the processor may be configured to execute software stored in memory, to transfer data to and from memory, and generally control the operation of the computing device according to the software. Software in memory is read in whole or in part by the processor, possibly buffered within the processor, and then executed.

[0048] In one example, the heating module 36 includes a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heating element 48 that self-regulates its temperature. If a resistive heating element is desired, a pulse width modulator (PWM) can be used to control the heating module 36 by controlling the PTC duty cycle. In one example, the controller 44 is operatively coupled to the power source 46 and the switch 42 and independently controls an amount of power delivered from the power source 46 to the fan 38 and the PTC 48. In one embodiment, the controller 44 is configured to provide a control signal to the heating module 36 in response to the input signal. For example, the control signal is configured to preheat the heating module 36 for a predetermined time before activating the blower 38, particularly when the ambient temperature is below a predetermined value, such as 32°F (= 0°C) or another temperature indicative of undesirably cold temperatures. Otherwise, cold air may be blown onto the occupant, causing thermal discomfort. The preheater may be triggered when the vehicle is remotely started or the door is unlocked or opened. In various embodiments, the control signal may be configured to operate the blower 38 at a low, predetermined speed for a predetermined time during preheating.

[0049] When the PTC 48 is deactivated, the fan 38 can be operated to provide a venting mode, directing unconditioned air to the occupant. It should also be understood that a cooling device, such as a Peltier-based thermoelectric device, may be used within the temperature control device 22.

[0050] According to Fig. 3, the inner portion 54 of the headrest 16 is designed to absorb impact from the occupant's head in the event of a vehicle accident. The core 54 is attached to supports 18. In seats where the headrest 16 is integrated into the back, the supports 18 can be omitted. A cushioning element 58, typically foam, is wrapped around the inner portion 54, and a cover 60 is arranged around the cushioning element 58. The inner portion 54, the cushioning element 58, and the cover 60 together form a first headrest structure that is attached to the supports 18. The cushioning element 58 provides a recess 68. The housing 26 is arranged in the recess 68 and the cover 60 to allow the supply air I to flow into the housing 26.

[0051] As in the Fig. 2 and Fig. As shown in Figure 3, the inner part 54 includes an inner part base section 56 that provides a plane 52. The temperature control device 22, including the fan 38 and the PTC 48, is arranged below and parallel to the plane 52 of the inner part base section 56, allowing the cushioning element 58 to more completely cover the rear side of the inner part 54. Additionally, the fluid guide section 28 provides a linear airflow from the fan 38 via the heating module 36 to the fluid outlet 32.

[0052] A conditioned air outlet opening 62 includes a neck 61 extending through a head support surface 64 of the headrest 16. A vent surface 63 is connected to the neck 61 and, in the example, provides for the fluid outlet 32 below the plane 52. The conditioned air outlet opening 62 may, if desired, also be formed from a single, monolithic piece. A retaining device 65 is attached to the conditioned air outlet opening 62 to retain the cover 60 between the vent surface 63 and the retaining device 65. In the Fig. In the example shown in Figure 6, a projection 67 on the neck 61 holds the holding device 65 clamped to the cover 60.

[0053] The supports 18 are provided in a base region 66 of the headrest 16. The supply air I enters the base region 66 through holes 70 adjacent to the supports 18 to transfer the supply air I into the recess 68. This makes the backrest of the headrest 16 more attractive to the rear occupants of the vehicle. This also makes it possible to attach padding to the back of the headrest 16, which provides protection in the event of an impact of the rear occupants against the back of the headrest 16, in such a way that it is free of any incorporated openings that provide an inlet or outlet.

[0054] With reference to the Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, the housing 26 is shown in more detail. The housing 26, which may be made of plastic, is constructed from several parts in the example. However, it should be noted that the housing 26 may be constructed from fewer or more components than shown in the figure. The housing 26 consists of the first housing part 72 and a second housing part 74, which are connected to one another. A top side of the first housing part 72 contains an opening which receives the fan 38. A bottom side of the fan 38 provides a fan inlet 76 and is attached to supports 79 by eyelets 75 on an underside of the first housing part 72. Opposite sides 80 of the first housing part 72, between which the fan 38 is arranged, are open to receive the supply air I, which enters the recess 68 through the bores 70.

[0055] A fan outlet 78 is connected to the second housing portion 74. The conditioned air outlet opening 62 is received in an opening in the second housing portion 74. The heating element 48 is received in opposing slots 82 in the second housing portion 74. The second housing portion 74 and the conditioned air outlet opening 62 are secured to each other via the heating module 36.

[0056] A channel 81 is mounted on the second housing portion 72, which receives the neck 61 such that the conditioned air outlet opening 62 can move telescopically inwardly relative to the channel 81 during a collision. In one embodiment, the conditioned air outlet opening 62 moves flush with or behind a plane 59 provided by an end surface 57 of the inner portion 54 during an impact.

[0057] A flexible seal 83, together with the movable conditioned air outlet 62, provides a deformable component disposed between a flange 85 on the duct 81 and the retainer 65. In one example, the seal 83 is a thick foam adhesively secured to both the flange 85 and the retainer 65 to improve handling during assembly of the headrest 16. Fig. Figure 7 illustrates locking elements 87 between the duct 81 and the conditioned air outlet opening 62 in the assembled position, such as a snap fit. When the conditioned air outlet opening 62 is slidably moved relative to the duct 81, the seal 83 absorbs energy while being compressed.

[0058] To facilitate assembly of the headrest 16, the retainer 65 can serve as a cutting template, allowing a worker to cut a hole in the cover 60 using the opening of the retainer as a guide. The conditioned air outlet opening 62 can then be inserted into the opening, with the neck 61 snapped onto the retainer 65 and the vent surface 63 adjacent to the cover 60.

[0059] The cushioning element 58 and the seal 83 are more compliant than the inner part 54. In one example, the inner part 54 has a compressive stiffness that is greater than the compressive stiffness of the cushioning element 58, for example, at least twice the compressive stiffness of the cushioning element 58. The cushioning element 58 has a compressive stiffness that is greater than the compressive stiffness of the seal 83, for example, at least twice the compressive stiffness of the seal 83.

[0060] In the Fig. In the example shown in Figure 5, a recessed pocket 96 is formed in the headrest 16, and the outlet opening 62 is disposed in the recessed pocket 96. In this way, the outlet opening 62 can be positioned farther away from the head support surface 64.

[0061] The outlet opening 62 may include a movable portion 94 that allows the outlet opening's vents to be positioned in a desired position according to the user's preference. A motor 90 is connected to the movable portion 94 to position the movable multi-angle positions in response to an electrical input signal, such as from a switch 92, since it may be difficult for the occupant to adjust the angular position of the louvers. The motor 90 may also be used to oscillate the louvers if desired.

[0062] The temperature control device 22 is integrated into the seat in such a way that the shock-absorbing function of the inner part 54 is not impaired. The temperature control device 22 can be attached to the supports 18 independently of the inner part 54 and / or cushioning element 58 in order to create a second load path. The temperature control device 22 can thus form a second head support structure that transfers the loads of the occupants to the supports 18 and can easily deflect upon impact. In this way, the second supporting structure can move independently of the first supporting structure, which provides primary shock absorption. Furthermore, the deformable component (e.g., seal 83 and outlet opening 62 for conditioned air) in the example is capable of translating a large distance upon impact, so that the majority of the impact is absorbed by the first head support structure.

[0063] It should also be understood that although a particular arrangement of components is disclosed in the illustrated embodiment, other embodiments may also benefit. Although specific sequences of steps are shown, described, and claimed, it should be understood that steps may be performed in any order, separated, or combined, and benefit from the present invention unless otherwise indicated.

[0064] Although the various examples have specific components shown in the figures, embodiments of this invention are not limited to these specific combinations. It is possible to use some of the components or features from one example in combination with features or components from another example.

[0065] Although an exemplary embodiment has been disclosed, one of ordinary skill in the art would recognize that certain modifications fall within the scope of the claims.
