Description
Technical area
[0001] The present description relates to a method for coating a metallic support profile with a layer of a corrosion-resistant material and to a system for coating a metallic support profile with a layer of a corrosion-resistant material. Technical background
[0002] In aircraft, particularly commercial aircraft used to transport people, installations and systems are exposed to a wide variety of influences for which they must be adapted accordingly. For example, the cabin of a commercial aircraft contains various types of rails. These rails are used to structurally attach seats and monuments and are subject to high demands during ongoing flight operations, including corrosion. The profile structures currently used for this purpose are made of either aluminum or titanium alloys. Aluminum rails are characterized by their relatively low purchase price. However, due to aluminum's low resistance to corrosive influences during series operation of the aircraft, they frequently have to be replaced during maintenance, which entails high additional costs. With titanium rails, however, the situation is exactly the opposite. The manufacturing costs for titanium rails are about 8-20 times higher than for the alternative aluminum rails.
[0003] JP 2004 244 652 A describes a method for simply preventing corrosion of a steel structure using carbon steel or similar. A corrosion-resistant metal foil is bonded to all or part of the surface of a steel structure or a coated surface thereof using an electrically insulating adhesive. Titanium foil with a thickness of 0.02–0.20 mm can be used for the corrosion-resistant metal foil, and an epoxy-based resin, a urethane-based resin, or a urea-based resin can be used for the adhesive. An acrylic resin is applied to both sides of a butyl rubber sheet, a release paper is bonded to the acrylic resin on one side, and an anti-corrosion sheet with a corrosion-resistant metal foil bonded to it is prepared on the acrylic resin on the other side. The release paper of the anti-corrosive film is peeled off and removed during installation. When this surface is adhered to the steel surface with the release paper removed, the corrosion-resistant metal foil can be adhered to it. After the metal foil is adhered to the surface, paint can be fully applied to both the adhered and unaffected parts.
[0004] DE 10 2017 208 038 A1 describes a method for the bubble-free application of a flat substrate (109) to the surface of a workpiece (114). The workpiece (114) and the flat substrate (109) are positioned in a vacuum chamber (100) of a pressing tool (100) that can be connected to a vacuum source. The flat substrate (109) is pressed onto the surface using a pressing means (106), wherein the vacuum chamber (100) is subjected to a vacuum of ≤ 500 mbar before the flat substrate (109) is pressed onto the surface of the workpiece (114).A pressing tool (100) described as suitable for carrying out the method comprises a vacuum chamber (100) in which the workpiece (114) and the flat substrate (109) can be positioned, including a lid (105) for opening and pressure-tightly closing the vacuum chamber (100), as well as a pressing means (106) guided through the lid (105) or integrated into the lid (105) for pressing the flat substrate (109). It also comprises positioning elements (110, 111, 112) for positioning the flat substrate (109) in the vacuum chamber (100) at a distance from the workpiece.
[0005] DE 41 12 607 A1 describes a method for coating a profiled surface of a plate-shaped workpiece with a flexible, flat coating material, such as a veneer, decorative paper, or the like. The method comprises the following steps: placing the workpiece on a press plate, with a layer of glue applied over the workpiece and / or the coating material; lowering an unheated preform membrane onto the coating material; evacuating the space between the preform membrane and the lower press plate; lowering a heated, elastically stretchable press membrane onto the preform membrane, and applying pressure to the press membrane. Description
[0006] The task can be considered to be to propose an alternative realization of a rail for an aircraft, which allows for cost-effective production or use and leads to very effective corrosion protection.
[0007] This object is achieved by the subject matter of independent claim 1. Further embodiments emerge from the dependent claims and from the following description.
[0008] According to a first aspect of the invention, a method for coating a metallic support profile with a layer of a corrosion-resistant material is proposed, comprising providing the metallic support profile with a surface to be coated, providing a layer element made of the corrosion-resistant material and adapted to the surface to be coated, applying an adhesive, curable substance to at least one of the surface to be coated and the layer element, applying the layer element to the surface to be coated, covering the arrangement of support profile and layer element with a compacting element, pressing the layer element onto the surface to be coated by means of the compacting element to achieve a predetermined joint thickness assumed by the adhesive substance, curing the adhesive substance while maintaining the joint thickness to generate a bond, and removing the compacting element.Providing the carrier profile further comprises holding the carrier profile in a receptacle, wherein covering by a compacting element comprises covering by a gas-impermeable membrane that is sealingly connected to the receptacle or a lid arranged thereabove, and wherein pressing on the layer element comprises evacuating a gap between the receptacle and the membrane or increasing the pressure in a gap between the membrane and the lid. The method according to the first aspect further comprises at least one of the following steps: placing a gas-permeable, at least flexibly soft surface element on the arrangement of carrier profile and layer element; and placing a film on the arrangement of carrier profile and layer element to increase the sliding properties of the membrane.
[0009] According to a second aspect of the invention, a method for coating a metallic support profile with a layer of a corrosion-resistant material is proposed, comprising providing the metallic support profile with a surface to be coated, providing a layer element made of the corrosion-resistant material and adapted to the surface to be coated, applying an adhesive, curable substance to at least one of the surface to be coated and the layer element, applying the layer element to the surface to be coated, covering the arrangement of support profile and layer element with a compacting element, pressing the layer element onto the surface to be coated by means of the compacting element to achieve a predetermined joint thickness assumed by the adhesive substance, curing the adhesive substance while maintaining the joint thickness to generate a bond, and removing the compacting element.
[0010] Providing the metallic support profile with the surface to be coated may include producing, sourcing, and / or preparing the support profile. The support profile could be made of aluminum or another metallic material that is to be provided with improved corrosion protection through an additional coating. The support profile could already be provided with a suitable dimension upon provision, so that the coating with the corrosion-resistant material is applied to a finally formed support profile. However, it is also conceivable to carry out any necessary cutting or adjustment only after coating. Providing the support profile may also include holding the support profile for subsequent processing. The support profile is preferably an elongated or rod-shaped workpiece that has a consistent cross-section.The cross-section preferably has two or more main surfaces at an angle to one another. For example, the cross-section of the support profile has one or more chords and one or more webs. The support profile could also be a hollow profile. For example, the support profile comprises a lower chord and an upper chord arranged at a distance therefrom, wherein a surface of the upper chord, which is spaced from the lower chord, is to be coated. The support profile is made, in particular, of an aluminum alloy. For example, the support profile is a seat rail for an aircraft cabin or an installation rail for cabin fittings.
[0011] The subsequent provision of a layer element made of the corrosion-resistant material, tailored to the surface to be coated, may involve adjusting the layer element to the desired dimensions. This could be done, for example, by cutting a corresponding workpiece. The layer element could also be designed so that it can be applied to the surface to be coated without further adjustment work and fulfills its intended function there. The dimensions existing before application of the layer element could therefore correspond to the required dimensions, so that after application of the layer element, the coating has the desired dimensions.
[0012] The layered element can comprise a thin metallic sheet. The layered element could, in particular, be a thin metal foil, particularly a titanium sheet or foil. The thickness of the sheet could be well below one millimeter, for example, in a range of 0.002 to 0.25 mm. Alternatively, non-metallic foils could also be used.
[0013] The application of the adhesive, curable substance to at least one of the surface to be coated and the layer element can involve the application of a liquid or pasty substance. Application can be achieved by spraying, squirting, rolling, brushing, squeegeeing, or other processes. The substance could be a sealant commonly used in aircraft construction, which is characterized by its high toughness. It is also conceivable to apply a curable substance in the form of an initially solid, cohesive, and, within certain limits, dimensionally stable laminate to the surface to be coated and to make it crosslinkable through subsequent exposure during the process, so that curing can then occur. This can involve the addition of a solvent, heating, or other processes.
[0014] The layered element is then applied to the surface to be coated, for example, by laying it on. Depending on the size and shape of the carrier profile, it may be advisable to unwind the layered element from a spool and continuously apply it to the surface in question. It is also conceivable to handle the layered element using a gripping or holding device and position it on the surface in question. Vacuum devices with suction cups could be suitable for this purpose, creating a force-fit connection with the layered element by applying a vacuum.
[0015] The compacting element is a mechanical element whose dimensions and shape enable it to cover the arrangement of the support profile and the layered element. The layered element can be pressed onto the surface to be coated by the compacting element, with flat contact between the layered element and the compacting element being particularly advantageous for this purpose. This creates uniform pressure on the layered element. The compacting element is preferably a flat element that, in particular, exceeds the dimensions of the surface to be coated. Particularly preferably, the compacting element can be pressed onto the layered element by means of pressure acting on one side. The aim is to create a predetermined joint thickness through the pressing process, which is assumed by the adhesive substance.
[0016] While the adhesive cures, the joint strength is maintained by maintaining a contact pressure or force until the adhesive solidifies. This creates a bond between the carrier profile and the layered element. Once curing is complete, the compacting element is removed.
[0017] The method according to the invention provides a cost-effective way to apply thin sheets or foils made of corrosion-resistant titanium or other materials to a carrier profile, which can be shaped to a large extent as desired. Different adhesive materials can be used, tailored to the intended application, for example, sealants commonly used in aircraft construction, which are characterized by high toughness. This allows for particularly thin (0.05 - 0.1 mm) and uniform or deliberately variable joint thicknesses to be achieved even on longer profile rails, which can be several meters long.
[0018] According to the first aspect of the invention and according to an embodiment of the second aspect of the invention, providing the support profile comprises holding the support profile in a receptacle, wherein covering by a compacting element comprises covering by a gas-impermeable membrane that is sealingly connected to the receptacle or a lid arranged thereabove, and wherein pressing on the layer element comprises evacuating a space between the receptacle and the membrane or increasing the pressure in a space between the membrane and the lid. Holding the support profile in the receptacle determines its position. The gas-impermeable membrane as a compacting element can form a space with the receptacle or the lid, which serves to provide pressure in the form of an overpressure or a vacuum. The gap can be fluidically connected to a conveying unit, which injects air or another fluid into the gap or removes air from it. This allows a force to be generated particularly easily and reliably across any area of the membrane, which serves to press the layered element onto the gap. The membrane is thus evenly pressed onto the arrangement of the layered element and the support profile, resulting in a particularly uniform joint thickness between the layered element and the support profile.
[0019] In another embodiment, the membrane is elastically stretchable. This allows the membrane to adapt particularly well to different shapes of the support profile and to stretch locally. A device designed to carry out the method can therefore be used flexibly for different support profiles, with little or no need for adjustment work.
[0020] The first aspect of the invention, as well as a further embodiment of the second aspect of the invention, could further comprise the placement of a gas-permeable, at least flexible, surface element on the arrangement of the support profile and layer element. This reliably removes any air remaining between the membrane and the layer element if a space defined by the membrane is evacuated. The surface element can, in particular, be an air-permeable fabric.
[0021] According to the first aspect of the invention and according to an embodiment of the second aspect of the invention, the method could further comprise applying a film to the arrangement of support profile and layer element to increase the sliding properties of the membrane. Particularly with larger support profiles and consequently with larger membranes, it cannot be ruled out that the membrane does not lie flat but forms local folds or waves. During the evacuation of the intermediate space, the membrane is tightened by sliding past the support profile at the boundaries of the layer element in the pressure direction, thereby generating a tensile force acting in the plane of the membrane. To compensate for its shape, it slides on the layer element until it is finally taut. The application of a film with improved sliding properties has a positive influence on this process.
[0022] Furthermore, the method of the second aspect of the invention, as well as an embodiment of the first aspect of the invention, comprises the local arrangement of at least one pressure stamp on the arrangement of support profile and layer element, wherein, for the local reduction of the joint thickness, an underside of the at least one pressure stamp facing the arrangement has a smaller surface area than an upper side of the at least one pressure stamp facing the compacting element. By introducing pressure stamps, a local increase in pressure on the respective joining partners is possible. This can lead, for example, to adhesive bonds of different thicknesses or to different properties.
[0023] Furthermore, the method could include inserting at least one bushing into a bore extending through the assembly, wherein the at least one bushing is covered by one of the at least one pressure dies. Inserts in the form of the at least one bushing are inserted in a precisely positioned and defined manner.
[0024] A third aspect of the invention analogously relates to a system for coating a metallic support profile with a layer of a corrosion-resistant material, comprising a receptacle for holding the metallic support profile with a surface to be coated, a layer element made of the corrosion-resistant material, wherein the layer element is adapted to the surface to be coated, an adhesive substance for adhering the layer element to the surface to be coated, a compacting element which is dimensioned such that it can cover the surface to be coated as well as the layer element arranged thereon, and a drive device which can be coupled to the compacting element and is designed to press the compacting element onto the layer element with a predetermined force and for a predetermined time, wherein the compacting element is elastically deformable so that it adapts to the shape of the arrangement during pressing. The system further comprises at least one of the following elements: a gas-permeable, at least flexibly soft surface element for placing on the arrangement of support profile and layer element; a film for placing on the arrangement of support profile and layer element to increase the sliding properties of the membrane; and at least one pressure stamp for application to the arrangement of support profile and layer element, wherein an underside of the at least one pressure stamp facing the arrangement has a smaller area than an area on an upper side of the at least one pressure stamp facing the compacting element.
[0025] The drive device can be a device designed to press the compacting element onto the assembly. As previously described, the drive device can comprise an air conveying unit that applies pressure to the compacting element on one side, thereby pressing it onto the assembly. However, it is also possible to use one or more actuators that act on the compacting element.
[0026] According to one embodiment, the receptacle can be trough-shaped and have a holder for stationary holding of the support profile. The holder can comprise a clamp holder or another profile structure-supporting tool. A trough shape allows the support profile to be enclosed vertically by the edges of the trough shape, so that the receptacle would then only need to be covered by a membrane to form the aforementioned gap. It may then be expedient to arrange an air conveying unit on the underside of the receptacle, which is in direct fluid communication with the gap formed by the receptacle.
[0027] In one embodiment, the compacting element could comprise a gas-impermeable membrane spanning the receptacle to create a gas-tight space between the receptacle and the membrane, wherein the drive device comprises a fluid pump that applies a negative pressure to the space so that the membrane is forced onto the layer element and the support profile.
[0028] According to a further embodiment, the receptacle could have a cover that can be placed on a side of the membrane facing away from the support profile, wherein the drive device is designed to generate an overpressure in a space between the membrane and the cover. The drive device therefore injects air into the space to generate the pressure therein. Short description of the characters
[0029] The following examples are described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. The illustrations are schematic and not to scale. Like reference numerals refer to like or similar elements. They show: Fig. 1 to 3 show a schematic representation of a system for coating a metallic support profile according to one embodiment. Fig. 4 shows a schematic representation of a system for coating a metallic support profile according to another embodiment. Fig. 5 shows a schematic representation of a method for coating a metallic support profile according to one embodiment. Detailed description of implementation examples
[0030] Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of a system 2 for coating a metallic support profile 4 with a layer of a corrosion-resistant material, shown here as a layer element 6. The support profile 4 is illustrated, by way of example, as a double-T beam extending perpendicular to the plane of the drawing. The support profile 4 has a lower flange 4a and an upper flange 4b arranged at a distance therefrom. A web 4c can be arranged, for example, between the two flanges 4a and 4b. Alternatively to this embodiment, two laterally arranged webs 4c could also be provided, which are spaced apart from one another and define the width of the support profile 4. The lower flange 4a can be narrower than the upper flange 4b and vice versa. A surface 10 to be coated lies on an upper side 8, i.e., on the upper flange 4b on a side facing away from the lower flange 4a.It is understood that completely different support profiles with different shapes can be used. It is preferred that the surface 10 to be coated be oriented upwards in the plane of the drawing.
[0031] The carrier profile 4 is located in a gas-impermeable receptacle 12, which here is trough-shaped, for example, and has a bottom surface 14 surrounded by side surfaces 16.
[0032] Located in the receptacle 12 is a holder 18 for stationary holding of the support profile 4. The holder 18 is designed here, for example, in the form of several profile pieces that are flush with the support profile 4 and the undercuts arranged therein, as well as the receptacle 12, so that the support profile 4 cannot slip in the receptacle 12. Alternatively, clamp holders or other devices would also be conceivable, which must be mechanically clamped to the support profile 4 and are arranged, for example, on the base surface 14. The aim is to hold the upper side 8 or the surface 10 to be coated in a defined orientation so that a certain force can temporarily act on the surface 10 to be coated without the support profile 4 slipping.
[0033] A circumferential, closed clamping frame 22 is provided for placement on an upper circumferential edge 20 of the side surfaces 16, which clamps an elastic and gas-impermeable membrane 24. By placing the clamping frame 22 or the membrane 24 on the edge 20, a closed intermediate space 26 is created with the receptacle 12. A vacuum pump 28 is arranged on the bottom surface 14 as an air conveying unit and is in fluid communication with the intermediate space 26 via an air connection 30. If the clamping frame 22 or the membrane 24 rests on the edge 20 of the receptacle 12, the intermediate space 26 can be evacuated by operating the vacuum pump 28, so that the membrane 24 presses evenly against the carrier profile 4 under the effect of the ambient pressure.
[0034] On the surface 10 to be coated there is a layer 32 of an adhesive, curable substance. The layer element 6 rests on this layer. The layer element 6 and the layer 32 can already be combined with one another before the layer element 6 is applied, by brushing, spraying or another application process. Alternatively, it is conceivable that the layer 32 is already arranged on the surface 10 to be coated before the layer element 6 is applied. Furthermore, it is conceivable that the layer 32 is formed by two partial layers before the layer element 6 is applied, which are each located on the layer element 6 or the surface 10 to be coated and are connected to one another to form a common layer 32 when the layer element 6 is applied.
[0035] In this exemplary embodiment, a gas-permeable fabric 34 is located on the layer element 6 and is covered there by a film 36, which is preferably slippery. The membrane 24 rests on this fabric and can slide on the film 36 in order to assume an orientation following the development of force during evacuation and thus tighten itself. When the vacuum pump 28 is operated, it evacuates the intermediate space 26, so that the membrane 24 is pressed onto the film 36. Air located between the film and the layer element 6 is forced outwards through the gas-permeable fabric 34. This can be useful for particularly long lengths or sloping shapes. For support profiles 4 with a simpler structure, the fabric 34 could also be omitted. The layer element 6 is pressed onto the layer of adhesive material 32 and the surface 10 to be coated. The vacuum in the intermediate space 26 is maintained until the adhesive substance 32 has cured and the layer element 6 adheres to the surface 10, forming a defined joint thickness.
[0036] This process is in Fig. 2 shown. There, the intermediate space 26 is evacuated, so that the membrane 24, the film 36, and the gas-permeable fabric 34 are pressed onto the holder 18 and the arrangement of film 36, gas-permeable fabric 34, layer element 6, and layer 32. The holder 18 is designed here as previously mentioned and largely fills the intermediate space 26, including the support profile 4, so that it extends to a region of the intermediate space 26 adjacent to the upper side 8. The membrane 24 can therefore rest on this during evacuation and is thereby protected from damage caused by shearing at the edges of the support profile 4.
[0037] In Fig. 3 It is shown by way of example that the support profile 4 has a bore 38 into which a bushing 40 is inserted. It may be expedient to press the bushing 40 through the membrane 24 in the direction of the support profile 4 with a greater force than the directly adjacent layer element 6. For this purpose, a pressure stamp 42 is used as an example, which has a larger area on an upper side 44 facing the membrane 24 than on an underside 46 facing away from it. Since an area on the upper side 44 of the bushing 40 is larger than an upper boundary surface of the bushing 40, a stronger force is exerted on the bushing 40 than would be possible directly through the membrane 24 onto the bushing 40.
[0038] As in the left half of the Fig. 3 As shown, a further pressure stamp 43 can also be used to reduce only local adhesive layer thicknesses. For this purpose, the pressure stamp 43 presses directly onto the layer element 6 with a shoulder surface 41 on the underside 46, which has a smaller surface area than an upper side 44 facing the membrane 24.
[0039] Fig. 4 a slight modification of system 2 in the form of a system 48, in which a fixed cover 50 is provided, which forms an intermediate space 52 on a side facing away from the receptacle 12, which is filled with pressurized fluid, for example air, by a fluid conveying unit 54 via a fluid supply connection 56. This creates an overpressure that acts on the membrane 24 arranged underneath and presses it towards the support profile 4. At the same time, air can flow outwards from the intermediate space 26 located beneath the membrane 24 through an air outlet 58 arranged in the base surface 14 to create pressure equalization and support the movement of the membrane 24.
[0040] Fig. 5shows schematically the process for coating a metallic carrier profile. The method comprises the steps of providing 60 the metallic support profile 4 with the surface 10 to be coated, providing 62 the layer element 6 made of the corrosion-resistant material and adapted to the surface 10 to be coated, applying 64 the adhesive, curable substance to at least one of the surface 10 to be coated and the layer element 6, applying 66 the layer element 6 to the surface 10 to be coated, covering 68 the arrangement of support profile 4 and layer element 6 by a compacting element, which can be designed approximately in the form of the membrane 24, pressing 70 the layer element 6 onto the surface 10 to be coated by means of the compacting element 24 to achieve a predetermined joint thickness assumed by the adhesive substance, curing 72 the adhesive substance while maintaining the Joint thickness for generating a bond, and removal 74 of the compacting element 24.
[0041] The provision 60 of the carrier profile 4 comprises, for example, holding the carrier profile 4 in the receptacle 12. As mentioned, the covering 68 can comprise covering with the gas-impermeable membrane 24, which is sealingly connected to the receptacle 12 or a cover 50 arranged thereabove. The pressing 70 of the layer element 6 comprises, for example, evacuating 76 the intermediate space 26 between the receptacle 12 and the membrane 24 or increasing the pressure 78 in the intermediate space 52 between the membrane 24 and the cover 50. The method can further comprise the application 80 of a gas-permeable, at least flexibly flexible surface element 34 onto the arrangement of the carrier profile 4 and the layer element 6. Furthermore, the method can comprise the application 82 of the film 36 onto the arrangement of the carrier profile 4 and the layer element 6 to increase the sliding properties of the membrane 24.For locally reducing the joint thickness, the method comprises, for example, the local arrangement 84 of at least one pressure stamp 42, 43 on the arrangement of support profile 4 and layer element 6, wherein an underside facing the arrangement has a smaller area than an area on an upper side of the at least one pressure stamp 42, 43 facing the compacting element 24. Furthermore, for example, a bushing 40 is introduced 86 into a bore 38 which extends through the arrangement, wherein the at least one bushing 40 is covered by one of the at least one pressure stamp 42, 43.
[0042] Additionally, it should be noted that "comprising" or "having" does not exclude other elements or steps, and "a" or "an" does not exclude a plurality. Furthermore, it should be noted that features or steps described with reference to one of the above embodiments may also be used in combination with other features or steps of other embodiments described above.
