Description

[0001] The invention relates to a battery assembly comprising a battery and a cell degassing channel for discharging gases from the battery, which comprises at least one battery cell. The cell degassing channel has a chamber configured such that a gas escaping from the at least one battery cell can be introduced into the chamber and passed through the chamber along at least one gas discharge path to at least one outlet opening of the chamber. Furthermore, the invention also relates to a motor vehicle having such a battery assembly and a method for discharging gases from a battery.

[0002] Batteries, particularly high-voltage batteries, for electric or hybrid vehicles are known from the prior art. Such high-voltage batteries typically have a large number of battery cells, which may also be combined to form cell modules. In the event of a battery cell defect, for example, due to a short circuit, there is a risk of such a battery cell thermal runaway. In the event of such thermal runaway, the battery cell typically outgasses, with particles from the cell also being entrained by the gas flow. To enable defined outgassing of a battery cell, the battery cells typically have openable vents in the form of, for example, bursting membranes. To prevent the particles released during cell outgassing from accumulating uncontrolled in the battery system, which could lead to blockages in flow cross-sections and short circuits in other cells within the battery, the gas escaping from the cells should be removed in a controlled manner, for example, via a cell degassing duct. A further problem is that the gases can self-ignite upon exiting the battery system, for example, via the aforementioned cell degassing duct. This is due, on the one hand, to the high gas temperature and, on the other hand, to the hot particles contained in the gas.Accordingly, it would be desirable to be able to reduce the outlet temperature of such a harmful gas and the particles it contains to such an extent that the escape of a flame from the battery system or spontaneous combustion of the gas outside the battery or the motor vehicle can be ruled out.

[0003] DE 10 2011 105 981 A1 describes a lithium-ion battery failure prevention system, according to which the battery cell gas is treated in the combustion engine exhaust system. A blower or air pump, among other things, is required to convey the battery exhaust gas to the exhaust system. The main problem with such active elements is that their functionality cannot be guaranteed in the event of a motor vehicle accident. If these elements are defective or their functionality is impaired, the battery gas cannot be properly discharged, which can have fatal consequences.

[0004] Furthermore, DE 10 2018 125 446 A1 describes a battery housing for accommodating one or more battery modules, comprising a housing section for partially defining the housing interior. The housing section has an integrated exhaust duct for discharging media that escape from a battery module in the event of a defect. The exhaust duct has at least one deflection region designed to change the transport direction of the media. This deflection slows down any entrained particles. This prevents, for example, sparks that could ignite the exhaust gas from leaving the battery housing.

[0005] EP 3 817 086 A1 and US 2021 / 066690 A1 describe battery arrangements with a battery and a cell degassing channel for discharging gases from the battery.

[0006] Nevertheless, efforts continue to make the removal of harmful gases from a battery even more efficient and safe.

[0007] The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a battery arrangement, a motor vehicle and a method which enable harmful gases to be removed from a battery as efficiently and safely as possible.

[0008] This object is achieved by a battery arrangement, by a motor vehicle, and by a method having the features according to the respective independent patent claims. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are the subject of the dependent patent claims, the description, and the figure.

[0009] A battery arrangement according to the invention according to the present claim 1 has a battery and a cell degassing channel for discharging gases from the battery, which comprises at least one battery cell, wherein the cell degassing channel has a chamber designed such that a gas escaping from the at least one battery cell can be introduced into it and can be passed through it along at least one gas discharge path to at least one outlet opening of the chamber. The chamber has at least one gas deflection structure arranged in an interior of the chamber, which does not run rectilinearly in a main direction corresponding to a first direction and is designed such that the at least one gas discharge path has a multiple change of direction with respect to a second direction perpendicular to the first direction in its course in the main direction.

[0010] Such a gas deflection structure ensures that the gas discharge path, along which gas flowing through the chamber can be guided to the chamber's outlet opening, does not run in a straight line, but is deflected several times as described, in particular with respect to a direction perpendicular to the main direction of flow. The gas discharge path can therefore, for example, be serpentine, zigzag, undulating, or meandering. In other words, the gas spreads along this gas discharge path in the main direction of flow, but is guided along a curved or zigzag path. This allows several major advantages to be achieved simultaneously: Firstly, this creates considerable friction between the guided gas and the gas deflection structure, which leads to the gas deflection structure heating up due to the guided gas. The temperature of the gas also cools down accordingly. The friction further decelerates and slows down the gas flowing along. This, in turn, leads to additional cooling of the gas. As a further positive side effect, particles in the gas are separated due to the constant contact with the gas deflection structure. This means that the gas exiting the outlet is ultimately significantly cooled and contains significantly fewer particles, so that the overall risk of ignition of the escaping gas is enormously reduced or can even be eliminated. Another particularly big advantage, however, is that this type of gas deflection is not provided by a single large channel that is deflected or twisted several times, but instead by at least one gas deflection structure arranged within a chamber. This thus separates the interior of the chamber, at least in part, into at least two sub-chambers.If more of these gas guidance structures are provided, as will be explained in more detail later, the interior space can even be divided into numerous individual flow channels that are largely spatially separated from one another. A single such flow channel or gas discharge path can then be made significantly narrower, which in turn promotes particle separation, a reduction in flow velocity, and the cooling of the gas. At the same time, the interior space can still provide a very large overall volume, and the gas introduced into the chamber can, for example, be distributed among the individual sub-spaces. A large overall volume is enormously advantageous because, on the one hand, it has the effect that the gas expands and thus cools upon entering this large overall volume. On the other hand, increased particle separation can also effectively prevent blockages in narrow passages. This further increases the safety and efficiency of gas removal. By integrating at least one gas deflection structure into the chamber interior, and in particular by integrating several such gas deflection structures into the chamber interior, the overall ratio between the wall area touched by the gas flow and the interior volume can be significantly increased. Not only the chamber walls but also the gas deflection structures contribute to the wall area. This maximizes the contact surface that the gas comes into contact with as it flows through the chamber, resulting in maximum particle separation, speed reduction and deceleration, as well as temperature reduction. In addition, the provision of the gas deflection structures provides more mass overall that can absorb thermal energy. This also increases the efficiency of gas cooling.

[0011] The chamber can be designed as a type of spark trap. In conventional spark traps, which are used for example in welding systems, the effect is used that sparks can be intercepted in such a trap, preventing them from escaping at the other end. When such a spark trap is used in a battery arrangement, however, this function is less useful because the gas flowing out of a cell does not contain any sparks anyway. Rather, the invention is based on the additional finding that such a spark trap can also achieve beneficial effects in connection with outgassing battery cells. In particular, such a spark trap can not only achieve particle separation but above all also slow down and cool down a gas escaping from a battery cell.

[0012] In general, within the scope of the invention, when a gas is mentioned, this should always be understood to mean a gas escaping or having escaped from the at least one battery cell, for example as a result of a defect in the battery cell or a thermal runaway of the battery cell. The battery can, for example, be a high-voltage battery as described above. This can comprise not only a single battery cell, but also, for example, several battery cells, in particular numerous battery cells. These can be designed, for example, as round cells, prismatic cells or pouch cells. Furthermore, the at least one battery cell is designed, for example, as a lithium-ion cell. If the battery comprises several battery cells, these can optionally also be combined to form battery modules. In other words, the battery can comprise several battery modules, each with several battery cells. The described cell degassing channel with the chamber can be provided per battery cell or per battery module, or even for the entire battery. In other words, the battery can have only one cell degassing channel with such a chamber, into which the gases from all potentially degassing cells of the battery are introduced. Alternatively, the battery can also have multiple cell degassing channels with respective such chambers, for example, per battery module or even per battery cell. It is also conceivable for a common cell degassing channel to be used for several battery cells and / or battery modules, but with several such chambers, for example, one per module or per cell.Furthermore, it is conceivable for the battery cell to be arranged in relation to the chamber in such a way that the gas escaping from a releasable vent associated with the battery cell can be introduced directly into the chamber or, alternatively, indirectly via an additional vent channel section. There are also numerous possibilities regarding the arrangement of the chamber in relation to the battery cell or battery, and in principle, there are no limits.

[0013] The chamber can further have chamber walls that delimit the interior of the chamber. In these chamber walls, at least one at least releasable inlet opening can be provided through which the gas escaping from the at least one battery cell can enter. An at least releasable inlet opening is to be understood in particular as an opening that can either be permanently open, for example in the form of a hole or breakthrough, or that is closed during normal operation and only opened under certain conditions, for example in the event of excess pressure, similar to a pressure relief valve or an opening closed by a bursting membrane. The chamber can have just one such at least releasable inlet opening or several. In the case of several such releasable inlet openings, these can, for example, be assigned to respective cells and / or battery modules.During normal operation, the chamber's outlet opening can also be closed or provided with a closure, such as a bursting membrane. Alternatively, the outlet opening can be designed as a permanent opening in the chamber. Here, too, it is conceivable for the chamber to have not just one outlet opening, but several, for example. Since the gas-guiding structure divides the chamber into sub-areas, it is also conceivable, for example, for such an outlet opening to be assigned to each gas-guiding path. Nevertheless, the gas flowing through the chamber, in particular gas flowing along different gas discharge paths, can be directed to a common outlet opening in the chamber.

[0014] The fact that the gas discharge path has a multiple change of direction with respect to a second direction to the first direction in its course in the main direction of travel preferably has the effect that a gas flowing along this gas discharge path, at least on average, always has a velocity component pointing in the main direction of travel, which in particular becomes smaller over time, as well as a velocity component perpendicular to the main direction of travel, which repeatedly changes its sign, i.e. points in the second direction, and then, after deflection, is directed opposite to the second direction, and then, after further deflection, is directed again in the second direction, and so on.

[0015] Preferably, the at least one gas deflection structure, in particular the plurality of gas deflection structures, is designed such that the at least one gas discharge path does not branch into a dead end. In other words, no dead ends should be formed by the at least one or more gas deflection structures. This is based on the knowledge that dead ends in the gas discharge path lead to gas backflow, which on the one hand promotes the clogging of narrow passages by depositing particles and thus a complete blockage of parts of a gas discharge path, and on the other hand leads to such a dead end being simply overflowed by incoming gas due to the backing up gas and thus remains ineffective in the further course.

[0016] It is particularly advantageous if the at least one gas deflection structure runs in a zigzag or wavy shape in the main direction. A zigzag structure in particular has proven to be particularly efficient and advantageous. In contrast to a wavy shape, such a zigzag structure has a much more abrupt change in direction at the reversal points. This is transferred analogously to the gas discharge path. The course of this path can also be designed accordingly by the gas deflection structure so that it runs in a zigzag or wavy shape in the main direction. This allows the effects mentioned above to be achieved in a particularly simple and efficient manner. The gas deflection structure can be designed in the form of a zigzag or wavy partition wall. This can, moreover, extend continuously from one chamber wall to the opposite chamber wall, in particular in a third direction, or can also be spaced from the chamber walls. Accordingly, a holder can also be provided to hold the gas deflection structure if it is not directly connected to a chamber wall. Such a holder can then be arranged accordingly on one or more chamber walls. Furthermore, the at least one gas deflection structure can be designed to run straight in a third direction, which is perpendicular to the first and second directions. In other words, the gas deflection structure can be designed to be translation-invariant in the third direction with regard to its geometric design. For example, the gas deflection structure can be designed such that it has the same geometric design in every cross-section perpendicular to the third direction. The gas deflection structure can thus be designed, for example, in the manner of a corrugated sheet or a zigzag-shaped sheet. The rectilinear design in the third direction enables particularly simple manufacture of the gas deflection structure, and moreover, gas deceleration should occur primarily in the main flow direction. Accordingly, it is advantageous if the at least one outlet opening of the chamber and at least one releasable inlet opening of the chamber are arranged in different halves of the chamber with respect to this first direction. This results in the gas spreading along the at least one gas discharge path spreading in the main flow direction and thus being efficiently cooled and decelerated, in particular by the gas deflection structure varying in the main flow direction. The velocity component of the gas in the third direction, in which the gas steering structure is linear, is thus relatively small and, at least on average, approximately zero.

[0017] According to the invention, the chamber has a plurality of gas deflection structures in the interior, comprising the at least one gas deflection structure, wherein the plurality of gas deflection structures do not run rectilinearly in the main direction of travel, so that between each two gas deflection structures of the plurality of gas deflection structures arranged adjacently in the second direction, a gas discharge path is provided, which, in its course in the main direction of travel, has a multiple change of direction with respect to a second direction perpendicular to the first. Preferably, the chamber has so many gas deflection structures that a plurality of gas discharge paths are also provided, separated at least regionally by the gas deflection structures. These gas discharge paths therefore run between each two adjacently arranged gas deflection structures. As a result, the entire interior of the chamber can be divided into a plurality of gas discharge paths. This allows a narrower design of the respective gas discharge paths, which in turn enables efficient cooling, velocity reduction and particle separation, while maintaining the largest possible total volume.

[0018] In this case, the respective plurality of gas deflection structures can be designed as already described for at least one gas deflection structure, i.e., for example, they can also run in a zigzag or wave-like manner in the main direction of travel.

[0019] It is also very advantageous if the multiple gas deflection structures are of similar design and arranged parallel to one another. This also allows for the formation of multiple gas discharge paths that also run parallel to one another in the main direction, particularly in a zigzag or wave-like pattern. This allows for an extremely compact chamber design.

[0020] In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the at least one gas deflection structure is formed from a metallic material. For example, the at least one gas deflection structure can be formed from aluminum and / or steel and / or copper. It is also conceivable to manufacture the various gas deflection structures from different materials. Metallic materials generally have the great advantage that they can absorb heat very quickly. Furthermore, they are very temperature-stable, particularly compared to most plastics. Nevertheless, other materials are also conceivable which have sufficiently high temperature stability, for example a melting point above several hundred degrees Celsius, under normal conditions, preferably above 600 degrees Celsius, preferably above 800 degrees Celsius, or higher. At the same time, a material with high thermal conductivity is advantageous for quickly absorbing heat.

[0021] In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the interior of the chamber has a width in the third direction and a length in the first direction, wherein the at least one gas deflection structure extends at least over a large part of the width in the third direction and / or at least over a large part of the length of the interior in the first direction. The at least one gas deflection structure preferably extends in the third direction over at least almost the entire width of the interior, for example over at least 90 percent or 95 percent, and in the first direction preferably over almost the entire length of the interior, for example likewise over at least 90 percent or 95 percent. It is also conceivable, for example, for the gas deflection structure to extend over the entire width in the third direction and, for example, to be in direct contact with the chamber walls. In the first direction, too, it is conceivable for the gas deflection structure to extend over the entire length of the chamber or its interior and, for example, also to be connected to the opposite chamber walls with respect to the first direction. In this case, the gas deflection structure adjoins, for example, directly an inlet and / or outlet opening of the chamber. In this case, it is advantageous to provide several such inlet and outlet openings, each of which opens into an area between two adjacent gas deflection structures. However, even if the gas deflection structure does not directly contact the chamber walls, the above-described design of the gas deflection structure, which extends at least almost over the entire length and width of the interior, allows the interior to be efficiently divided into individual gas discharge paths, in particular if several such parallel gas deflection structures are provided.Furthermore, the interior of the chamber can have a height in the second direction, wherein the overall arrangement of the plurality of gas-guiding structures extends in the second direction over most of the height, in particular over almost the entire height. The distance of the overall arrangement of the gas-guiding structures in the second direction from the chamber walls delimiting the interior in the second direction can be at most as large as, or even smaller than, a maximum distance in the second direction between two gas-guiding structures arranged adjacently in the second direction.

[0022] According to the invention, the multiple gas discharge paths provided between the gas guidance structures are fluidically coupled to one another in a gas inlet region of the chamber and / or in a region of the outlet opening. This makes it possible, for example, to use a common gas inlet region and / or a single outlet opening to discharge the gases from the chamber. The gas introduced into the chamber via a common gas inlet region of the chamber is then divided into the individual gas discharge paths only after being introduced into the chamber. Analogously, the gases guided via the separate gas discharge paths are reunited in the outlet region, i.e., in the region of the outlet opening, and exit this outlet opening together. This simplifies the structure of the chamber without reducing its efficiency.Outside the scope of the present invention, however, it is also conceivable for the multiple gas discharge paths provided between the gas deflection structures to be completely fluidically separated from one another within the interior of the chamber. Accordingly, each gas discharge path can then be assigned an inlet opening and an outlet opening of the chamber.

[0023] Furthermore, the invention also relates to a motor vehicle with a battery arrangement according to the invention or one of its embodiments. The advantages described for the battery arrangement according to the invention and its embodiments thus apply equally to the motor vehicle according to the invention.

[0024] The motor vehicle according to the invention is preferably designed as a motor vehicle, in particular as a passenger car or truck, or as a passenger bus or motorcycle.

[0025] Furthermore, the invention also relates to a method according to the present claim 8 for discharging gases from a battery having at least one battery cell by means of a cell degassing channel which has a chamber into which a gas escaping from the at least one battery cell is introduced and through which the gas is conducted along at least one gas discharge path to at least one outlet opening of the chamber. The chamber has at least one gas deflection structure arranged in an interior of the chamber, which runs non-rectilinearly in a main direction corresponding to a first direction and which deflects a gas guided along the at least one gas discharge path to the outlet opening several times in its course in the main direction with respect to a second direction perpendicular to the first direction. The gas is the gas that has escaped from the battery cell.

[0026] Here, too, the advantages described for the battery assembly according to the invention and its configurations apply equally to the method according to the invention. The cell degassing channel used in the method according to the invention can be designed and / or further developed as described for the battery assembly according to the invention and its configurations. The same applies to the chamber, its interior, and the gas-guiding structures enclosed by the chamber.

[0027] The invention also includes further developments of the method according to the invention that have features already described in connection with the further developments of the battery arrangement according to the invention. For this reason, the corresponding further developments of the method according to the invention are not described again here.

[0028] The invention also encompasses combinations of the features of the described embodiments. The invention therefore also encompasses implementations that each comprise a combination of the features of several of the described embodiments, unless the embodiments are described as mutually exclusive.

[0029] Exemplary embodiments of the invention are described below. The exemplary embodiments explained below are preferred embodiments of the invention. In the exemplary embodiments, the described components of the embodiments each represent individual features of the invention that can be considered independently of one another, each of which also develops the invention independently of one another. Therefore, the disclosure is intended to encompass combinations of the features of the embodiments other than those shown. Furthermore, the described embodiments can also be supplemented by further features of the invention already described.

[0030] The single figure shows a schematic representation of a battery arrangement 10 according to an exemplary embodiment of the invention. The battery arrangement 10 in turn has a battery 12, which in this example comprises a plurality of battery cells 14. These battery cells 14 are exemplary combined to form a battery module 16. The battery 12 can also comprise a plurality of such battery modules 16. Furthermore, the battery cells 14 in this example are designed as prismatic cells and arranged in a battery housing 18. Each battery cell 14 has a releasable cell venting opening 20. This can be provided through an opening in the cell housing of the cells 14, which opening is closed, for example, by a bursting membrane during normal operation. In the event of a defect in a battery cell 14, such as a battery cell 14a in this example, this opening 20 can open due to the excess pressure generated in the cell 14, allowing the cell 14 to outgas in a controlled manner. In order to discharge the gas 22 in a controlled manner from the battery 12 and in particular from the motor vehicle in which the battery assembly 10 is arranged, the battery assembly 10 further comprises a cell degassing channel 24. This comprises a chamber 26 with an interior 28, into which the gas 22 escaping from the cell 14a can be introduced and through which this introduced gas 22 can be passed to an outlet opening 30 of the chamber 26.In this example, the cell degassing channel 24 has a further channel section 32, into which the gas 22 escaping from the cells 14 can be introduced and via which the gas 22 introduced into this channel section 32 can be introduced into the chamber 26 fluidically coupled to this channel section 32. However, it would also be conceivable to dispense with this additional channel section 32 and to couple the chamber 26 to the battery 12 in such a way that the gas 22 escaping from the cells 14 can also be introduced directly into the chamber 26 or into the interior space 28. The chamber 26 can therefore be provided as a separate housing, for example, per module 16 or per battery 12, and the chamber 26 can also be designed as an extension of the gas channel 32.

[0031] The gas 22 introduced into the chamber 26 in the present example is very hot and is referred to here as hot gas 22a and also comprises numerous particles 34. For reasons of clarity, only a few of these particles 34 are provided with a reference symbol. The cooler gas exiting the outlet opening 30 is designated 22b. By passing through the chamber 26, the gas 22 is significantly cooled and, in addition, the number of particles 34 contained in the gas 22 is significantly reduced. This can advantageously be achieved by the chamber 26 having a plurality of gas deflection structures 36 arranged in the interior 28 of the chamber 26. Here, too, only a few are provided with a reference symbol for reasons of clarity. These gas deflection structures 36 are arranged as a type of partition wall in the interior 28.Furthermore, each gas deflection structure 36 runs in a main direction, which in the present case corresponds to the illustrated x-direction. In this main direction x, the respective gas deflection structures 36 do not run in a straight line, but in the present example in a zigzag shape. Alternatively, they could also run in a wave-like or serpentine manner. Between each two gas deflection structures 36 arranged directly next to one another in the y-direction, a respective gas discharge path 38 is thus formed, which, due to the geometric design of the gas deflection structures 36, has multiple changes of direction in its course in the main direction x with respect to a second direction perpendicular to the first, wherein this second direction corresponds in the present case to the illustrated y-direction.The figure illustrates, by way of example, a gas flow 40 running along a gas discharge path 36, with this change of direction being illustrated by the arrows 42 pointing alternately in the x-direction and opposite to the y-direction. These arrows 42 correspond in particular to the current flow direction of the gas flow 40 at the corresponding positions within the gas discharge path 38.

[0032] By repeatedly deflecting the gas stream 40 flowing along such a gas discharge path 38, a deceleration of this gas stream 40 and a concomitant cooling of the gas stream can be achieved, as well as additional cooling by this gas stream 40 releasing heat to these gas deflection structures 36, which consequently heat up. These are therefore preferably formed from a material that is as temperature-resistant as possible and is preferably also designed to absorb heat as quickly as possible. Forming them from a metal or an alloy is particularly advantageous. Accordingly, the gas deflection structures 36 can be provided, for example, as zigzag-shaped sheets, which in particular have the same geometry and are arranged, for example, parallel to one another, as shown in the figure. This makes it possible to provide a plurality of gas discharge paths 38 running parallel to one another.Because the gas flow 40 collides multiple times with the walls of these gas deflection structures 36 due to the multiple deflections, this results in increased particle deposition, particularly on the walls of these gas deflection structures 36. Because several such gas deflection structures 36 are arranged in a common chamber 26, the individual gas discharge paths 38 can be designed relatively narrow, which is beneficial for particle deposition, deceleration, and cooling of the gas flow 40 without reducing the total flow volume. This can, in particular, still be kept very large, so that, for example, additional gas cooling can be achieved through expansion upon entry into the chamber 26. Ultimately, a cooled harmful gas 22b with few or even no particles 34 exits through the outlet opening 30.This escaping mixture 22b can no longer ignite due to its low temperature and the few particles it contains. The gas 22b escaping into the environment 44 is thus significantly less hazardous. The outlet opening 30 can be positioned relative to the motor vehicle in which the battery assembly 10 is used such that the escaping gas 22b can be discharged into an environment 44 of the motor vehicle. Alternatively, another part of the cell degassing channel 24 can be connected to this outlet opening 30, which directs the cooled gas 22b to the final outlet opening, which opens into an environment 44 of the motor vehicle.

[0033] Overall, the examples demonstrate how a spark trap can be provided for battery systems. By appropriately designing a gas channel as a chamber or introducing the harmful gas into an extra volume as a chamber, the temperature of the gas is lowered so that self-ignition of the gas occurs when it escapes from the system. The outlet temperature of the harmful gas and the particles it contains can be reduced to such an extent by the gas deflection structures enclosed by the chamber that the escape of a flame from the battery system or self-ignition of the gas outside the battery can be ruled out. To provide the gas deflection structures, several specially bent metal sheets are preferably placed side by side in the interior of the described chamber, and the harmful gas is passed between them. Due to the special design, the gas flow is repeatedly deflected, and the particles are thrown against the walls.Direct flow without deflection is prevented by the geometry of these plates, referred to here as gas deflection structures. The heat of the gas and particles is transferred to the plates. By reducing the flow velocity and deflecting the gas stream, particles are also separated.
