AI Technical Summary
Existing packaging with containers and lids face challenges in manufacturing complexity and ensuring a reliable seal, as the axial clamping force used in prior designs is not always effective in maintaining tightness.
The packaging employs a sealing surface with a radius that decreases towards the top of the lid, utilizing a radially acting clamping force to ensure a reliable seal, with a cone angle between 2° and 60°, and a seal that extends into a raised area on the lid, allowing the seal to be formed using a liquid or pasty mass during production.
This design simplifies manufacturing, reduces costs, and guarantees a reliable seal by using a radially aligned clamping force, enhancing the sealing effectiveness and preventing direct contact between the container edge and lid sheet metal.
Description
[0001] The invention relates to a packaging with a container and a lid.
[0002] Packaging with a lid and a container is known, for example, from WO 2009 / 111894 A1, DE 10 2019 131 078 A1, WO 1013 / 6414 A1, and US Pat. No. 3,977,340 A. However, the seal, which rests with its sealing surface axially against the apex of the upper edge of the container, is complex to manufacture and must be inserted into the lid in a separate step. Furthermore, tightness is not guaranteed if the contact pressure is too low.
[0003] The invention is therefore based on the object of creating a packaging with a container and a lid which can be produced more easily and cheaply and ensures a reliable seal.
[0004] This problem is solved with a packaging having the features of claim 1.
[0005] According to the invention, the seal has a sealing surface facing the central axis, which is a surface of revolution whose radius measured from the central axis of the lid decreases towards the upper part of the lid.
[0006] For the purposes of the invention, the sealing surface is the surface that comes into contact with the upper edge of the container to be sealed. Surface areas of the seal adjacent to this sealing surface are indeed part of the seal, but since they do not directly contribute to the seal, they are not considered or referred to as sealing surface(s) within the scope of the invention.
[0007] Since the diameter of the sealing surface decreases towards the upper part of the lid, the upper edge of the container, which comes into contact with the sealing surface when the lid is placed on the container, is clamped in the seal in the radial direction, whereby the clamping force increases the further the lid is pressed or alternatively screwed onto the container in the axial direction.
[0008] According to the invention, a radially acting clamping force is therefore used to ensure a reliable seal, whereas in the prior art, e.g. the aforementioned WO 2009 / 111894 A1, an axially acting clamping force is used.
[0009] Preferred embodiments of the invention are the subject of the subclaims.
[0010] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the sealing surface runs in a central region at a cone angle of between 2° and 60°, preferably between 5° and 45°, particularly preferably between 6° and 30°. The size of the cone angle depends, among other things, on two factors. One factor is the manufacturing accuracy of the lid and the container. With lower manufacturing accuracy, a larger cone angle is advantageous because in this case it is more guaranteed that the upper edge of the container comes into contact with the sealing surface when the lid is pushed or screwed onto the container. With higher manufacturing accuracy, on the other hand, a smaller cone angle is advantageous because the flatter wedge angle allows a higher axial clamping force to be achieved, which can also improve the tightness.
[0011] According to the invention, the sealing surface can be formed in the central region by either a curved or a straight generatrix. According to the invention, a differently shaped generatrix can be used in the central region in the axial direction, both in the upper region, i.e., toward the upper part of the lid, and in the lower region. For example, a generatrix that is straight in the central region can transition into a concavely curved generatrix in the upper region, or a generatrix that is concavely curved in the central region can transition into a straight generatrix in the lower region. Other shapes and combinations of generatrixes are, of course, also possible within the scope of the invention.
[0012] Preferably, a curved generatrix is concavely curved, but it is also possible for a generatrix to be convexly curved at least in sections.
[0013] In a particularly preferred embodiment, the sealing surface extends into the region of the upper lid part, whereby the cone angle in this region can increase to up to 70°, in particular 80°, and particularly preferably up to 90°. A continuously increasing cone angle is preferred. This embodiment combines the contact force according to the invention, acting in a substantially radial direction, with a seal known from the prior art, in which the seal presses against the upper edge of the container with a force component acting in the axial direction.
[0014] A further particularly preferred embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the upper part of the lid has a raised region in an edge region adjoining the collar and a recessed region adjoining this in the direction of the center of the lid, wherein it is further preferred if the seal extends into the raised region.
[0015] The raised area adjacent to the collar forms a recessed groove, viewed from the inside of the lid. This is particularly advantageous for the manufacture of the lid according to the invention because the lid can be manufactured according to the invention by introducing the seal as a liquid or pasty mass into the lid, which is open at the top during manufacture, in such a way that the mass is applied primarily to the inside of the collar, but can also flow into the edge area on the upper part of the lid—raised when viewed from the outside but recessed when viewed from the inside. However, due to the groove, the mass does not flow further toward the center of the lid.
[0016] In order to fix the lid to the container, as is known from the prior art, either a plurality of projections in the form of radially inwardly embossed cams or a thread can be provided on the collar.
[0017] In the invention, the seal arranged on the lid rests with its sealing surface facing substantially radially inwards against a sealing surface arranged in the region of the upper edge of the container.
[0018] The sealing surface is arranged on the outside of the double fold of the container lid, which is firmly connected to the container.
[0019] The effect according to the invention is thus also achieved here that the sealing surface of the seal arranged on the lid and the sealing surface on the double seam of the container abut one another with a clamping force which is substantially radially aligned or at least has a substantial force component aligned in the radial direction.
[0020] A further preferred feature of the packaging according to the invention is that, when the packaging is closed, a gap remains between the upper edge region of the container and the upper lid part. This ensures that the upper edge of the container (the region of the container lid extending above it) does not rest directly against the sheet metal of the upper lid part, but rather the seal is achieved primarily by the sealing surface located radially inward on the collar of the lid and the sealing surface located radially outward on the upper edge of the lid, optionally supported by a force component acting in the axial direction, with which the seal presses against the upper edge of the container and thus further improves the seal.
[0021] Further features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a preferred, non-limiting embodiment of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings. It shows: Fig. 1 a vertical section through a packaging according to the invention and Fig. 2 the detail II of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.
[0022] The drawings show an embodiment of a packaging according to the invention, which, however, is only an example and, apart from the features according to the invention as defined in the claims, can also be designed differently with regard to many components within the scope of the present invention without this requiring special mention below.
[0023] In Fig. 11 shows a packaging 1 according to the invention in a vertical section along a central axis 4, which essentially consists of a container 2 and a lid 3. The container 2 and the lid 3 are circular in plan view.
[0024] As can be seen in more detail in Fig. 2, the container 2 has an upper edge 5, wherein the sheet metal of the container wall 6 is bent outwards at the upper edge 5 to form a flange 7.
[0025] In the illustrated embodiment, the container 2 has a so-called container lid 8, which is pulled upwards along the container wall 6 within the container 2, bent in the form of a double fold 9 over the rim 5 and the flange 7, and received with its free edge 11 between the flange 7 and the container wall 6. A possibly resealable opening can be arranged in the container lid 8, which, however, is irrelevant for the present invention and is therefore not shown.
[0026] The double fold 9 rests with a peripheral area 12 on the outside of the flange 7 and has a radially outward-facing sealing surface 13 and an upper edge 5a.
[0027] It is emphasized that the above-described shape of the edge 5, 5a with a flange 7 or a double fold 9 of the container lid 3 is not essential to the invention and can also be designed differently, in particular as known from the prior art. What is essential is only that a sealing surface 13 is present on or below the upper edge 5a, which is located essentially radially outward and has a straight or preferably convexly curved contour against which the sealing surface of the lid 3 can rest.
[0028] The sealing surface is also defined as the surface that comes into contact with the seal 19 within the meaning of the invention. Surface areas adjacent to this sealing surface do not directly contribute to the seal and are not considered or referred to as sealing surfaces within the scope of the invention.
[0029] The lid 3 has a lid upper part 14 and a collar 15, with the lower edge 16 of the collar 15, spaced from the lid upper part 14, being flanged. A transition area 17 from the lid upper part 14 to the collar 15 is formed by a rounded edge. The lid is made of a metallic material, for example, food-safe coated packaging steel or aluminum sheet.
[0030] The lid upper part 14 has an edge region 18, which adjoins the transition region 17 and has a raised region 21, which transitions into a recessed region 22 toward the central axis 4 of the lid. The central region 28 within the recessed region 22 of the lid 3 rises above the recessed region 22 and also above the raised region 21, but is not relevant to the present invention and can be designed in any desired manner.
[0031] On an inner side of the collar 15, a seal 19 is arranged around the entire circumference of the lid 3 and extends into the transition region 17. The seal can end in the transition region, but in a preferred embodiment of the invention extends into the raised region 21 and thus encloses both the sealing surface 13 in the radially outer region of the double fold 9 and at the upper edge 5a. In the illustrated embodiment, the seal 19 extends approximately to the middle region of the upper edge 5a and the raised region 21, but can also end earlier or extend beyond it.
[0032] The seal 19 has a sealing surface 23 facing the central axis 4, which is a surface of revolution whose radius R, measured from the central axis 4 of the lid 2, decreases toward the lid upper part 14. The sealing surface 23 has a central region 24 that extends at a cone angle α—measured between the respective generatrix and the central axis—between 2° and 60°, preferably between 5° and 45°, particularly preferably between 6° and 30°.
[0033] The generatrices of the surface of revolution or sealing surface 23 can - when the lid 3 is not screwed onto the container 2 - be straight or curved lines, whereby the lines in the connection, i.e. above and below the central region 24, can also have a different shape than in the central region.
[0034] For the purposes of the invention, the central region 24 is considered to be that region of the sealing surface 23 which is located approximately halfway up and down the seal 19. The extent of this extension, in which the cone angle α is essentially constant or changes only slightly, i.e., preferably by less than 3° to 5°, and lies within the specified ranges of the cone angle α, is preferably adapted to the geometry of the sealing surface 13 in such a way that a reliable seal is achieved between the sealing surface 23 and the sealing surface 13.
[0035] Following the central region 24, the cone angle α increases, not necessarily but preferably, until, in the illustrated embodiment, it reaches 90° in the elevated region. Therefore, in the particularly preferred embodiment illustrated in the drawings, a seal is achieved that transitions from a substantially radially inwardly facing sealing surface 23, which bears against the sealing surface 13, to an axially downwardly facing sealing surface, which in this case also bears against a part of the upper edge 5a.
[0036] The thickness of the seal 19 in the raised area 21 is preferably selected such that the edge 5a does not rest against the sheet metal of the upper lid part 14, but a gap 26 remains so that a good seal is also achieved in the raised area 21.
[0037] In order to fix the lid 3 to the container 2, the lid 3 in the embodiment shown has projections 25 in the form of radially inwardly embossed cams which rest on the lower edge 27 of the double fold 9 and exert a pulling force on the lid 3 in the direction of the container 2 which is sufficiently large so that a clamping force is generated between the seal 19 and the double fold 9, which clamping force brings about the desired tightness and secures the lid against jumping off.
[0038] Instead of the cams 25, other types of projections known from the prior art can of course also be used, for example, a thread. The projection(s) can also engage at a location other than the double seam 9, for example, at locking projections or a thread on the wall 6 of the container.
[0039] There may be a negative pressure in the packaging 1, which additionally draws the lid 3 towards the container 2, thus further improving the seal. List of reference symbols:
