AI Technical Summary
Existing roller shutter box insulation methods are insufficient in reducing noise permeability, allowing excessive sound to enter buildings despite the use of materials like cellular rubber and polystyrene.
A sound insulation shell made of PVC with an elastic sound insulation material, such as ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM), completely encloses the roller shutter box from the inside, ensuring a tight fit and enhanced soundproofing by covering the top, back, bottom, and side walls without gaps.
The solution significantly reduces noise transmission into buildings by altering the natural frequency of the roller shutter box and strongly attenuating specific sound frequencies, providing effective retrofittable sound insulation.

Abstract
Description
[0001] The invention relates to a sound insulation for roller shutter boxes. State of the art
[0002] Roller shutters are used to shade and darken rooms in houses by moving the shutters over the windows and doors. A roller shutter box above each window and door contains a roller shutter on a pivoting axis that can be moved parallel to the window or door. The roller shutter can be pulled up into the box to reveal the window.
[0003] Especially when the roller shutter box completely penetrates the masonry from the outside to the inside of the building, a lot of noise and heat flow passes through the roller shutter box. Since the roller shutter box is usually approximately cuboid-shaped, while the rolled-up roller shutter is cylindrical, the space between the cylindrical roller shutter and the wall facing the inside of the building is often lined with insulation. Of course, a residual gap must remain to allow the roller shutter to rotate within the roller shutter box.
[0004] This insulation serves, on the one hand, to reduce heat flow, with the goal of minimizing the amount of heat escaping from the building's interior to the outside in winter and, on the other hand, minimizing the amount of heat escaping from the outside through the roller shutter box in summer. The insulation also serves as soundproofing, generally preventing excessive street noise from entering the building.
[0005] DE 202014100607 U1 discloses a roller shutter box in which a rounded insulating material is arranged between the roller shutter and the wall facing the building's interior. Cellular rubber, polyethylene, Neopor, and polystyrene are suggested as insulation materials.
[0006] DE 19900589 A1 and DE19905622 A1 also disclose roller shutter boxes in which insulation is installed in the roller shutter box.
[0007] WO 2018 / 158606 shows insulation 30 in vertical orientation next to the roller shutter box.
[0008] DE 7822165 U1 shows a roller shutter box with a tunnel-shaped sound insulation inside that encloses the front, top, and back. Due to the tunnel shape, the side walls are not insulated. The walls of the roller shutter box enclose the insulation.
[0009] DE 29812380 U1 shows a roller shutter box made of two half-box profiles; an insulating layer covers the inside of the inner half-box profile.
[0010] DE 202012008861 U1 shows a roller shutter box in which a block-like support serves both as a support and insulation.
[0011] DE 102008008135 A1 shows a lining inside a roller shutter box. DE 202012101962 U1 shows a roller shutter box with a header insulation element inside the roller shutter box.
[0012] JP 2002 213041 A discloses a generic roller shutter box with an attachment that is intended to protect against water ingress, but also provides acoustic insulation.
[0013] AT 006822 U1 shows a roller shutter box which is completely enclosed with a honeycomb-shaped knob structure.
[0014] JP 2004 092194 describes a roller shutter box with two-layer internal sound insulation.
[0015] DE 20102298 U1 discloses a roller shutter box in which a thin-walled, self-supporting body is enclosed by an insulating element.
[0016] Although these state-of-the-art insulations reduce sound transmission through the roller shutter box, this is often not considered sufficient.
[0017] The invention is based on the object of further reducing the noise permeability of a roller shutter box.
[0018] The problem is solved by a roller shutter box having the features of independent claim 1.
[0019] A sound insulation for a roller shutter box, which in the installed position in a masonry of a building has a front side facing the environment, a back side facing the building interior, a bottom side facing the window shaded by the roller shutter of the roller shutter box, a top side facing away from the window, two side walls arranged perpendicular to the sides and an interior space between the front side, top side, back side, bottom side and side walls, completely encloses the top side, back side, bottom side and side walls to the building interior I.
[0020] This means that the roller shutter box is completely encapsulated from the interior of the building, so that less noise from the surrounding area and the roller shutter box can penetrate into the interior of the building.
[0021] The sound insulation according to the invention has the advantage of being retrofittable. If a roller shutter box is put into operation according to the state of the art and occupants of the rooms notice that the sound insulation is insufficient, the sound insulation according to the invention can be retrofitted to the roller shutter box.
[0022] The sound insulation includes a soundproofing shell, which can be completely installed on the roller shutter box.
[0023] A particularly positive effect is achieved by the sound insulation that incorporates a soundproofing material inside the soundproofing shell. This insulation reduces sound transmission and ensures a secure fit.
[0024] Advantageous embodiments are protected by the features of the dependent claims.
[0025] It has been found to be advantageous if the sound insulation encloses the top, back, bottom and side walls towards the building interior I essentially without a gap, thereby enhancing the aforementioned effect.
[0026] The soundproofing insulation material preferably contains an elastic material, preferably ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) or melamine foam.
[0027] It has been shown that soundproofing insulation should have a thickness of 2 to 10 mm, preferably 3 to 4 mm.
[0028] The invention will now be explained with reference to the figure. Figure 1 a roller shutter box with a sound insulation according to the invention in the installed position, Figure 2 the roller shutter box with the sound insulation according to the invention during installation and Figure 3 a roller shutter box with sound insulation according to the invention after installation.
[0029] The same reference symbols in different drawings refer to the same objects.
[0030] Figure 1 shows a section through a roller shutter box 1 according to the prior art with an interior space 6 between a top side 5, a back side 3, a bottom side 4 and two side walls 18; only one side wall 18 is visible in the figure. The roller shutter box 1 is in the installed position in a masonry 14 of a building not shown in detail. The roller shutter box 1 is attached above a window 7. The figure only shows the frame 8 of the window 7; the sash is not shown. To the left of the window 7 is the surrounding area U; to the right is the building interior I. In the installed position, the front side 2 is directed towards the surrounding area U, while the back side 3 is directed towards the building interior I.
[0031] A roller shutter 9, shown only partially, is located in the roller shutter box 1. The underside 4 is directed towards the window 7 shaded by the roller shutter 9 of the roller shutter box 1. The top side 5 is located away from the window 7. On the side of the environment U, in front of the masonry 14 and the front side 2, there is an external insulation 15. Between the front side 2, the top side 5, the back side 3, the bottom side 4 and the side walls 18 of the roller shutter box 1 there is an interior space 6 which accommodates the rolled-up roller shutter 9 and an internal insulation 12 made of Styrofoam. The internal insulation 12 is located on the side facing the building interior I. Between the roller shutter box 1 and the internal insulation 12 there is an glued-on PVC-based internal insulation film 13 which is approximately 5 mm thick and elastic, so that the internal insulation 12 is held in place by pressure by the elastic internal insulation film 13.The inner insulation 12 is concave towards the front side 2 so that the rolled-up roller shutter 9 is partially enclosed without friction.
[0032] A sound insulation 10 according to the invention completely encloses the top side 5, back side 3, bottom side 4, and side walls 18 facing the building interior I. The sound insulation 10 comprises a sound insulation shell 16 made of PVC and a sound insulation material 17 inside the sound insulation shell 16. The sound insulation material 17 is an elastic material made of ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) with a thickness of approximately 3 mm. The sound insulation 10 encloses the roller shutter box 1 facing the building interior I essentially without a gap; accordingly, there are small gaps at the corners, but the sound insulation material 17 fits tightly against the flat surfaces of the roller shutter box 1.
[0033] Figure 2shows how the sound insulation 10 is placed on a roller shutter box 1. The sound insulation material 17 is slightly compressed so that - as in Figure 3 As shown, the sound insulation 10 sits firmly on the roller shutter box 1 without any additional fastening elements. Alternatively, the sound insulation 10 could also be screwed, glued, or connected to the roller shutter box 1 in another way.
[0034] The sound insulation shell 16 can optionally be a part of a roller shutter box 1 with slightly larger dimensions, so that the sound insulation shell 16 can be put over the roller shutter box 1 like a matryoshka doll.
[0035] The invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiment. For example, the sound insulation according to the invention can be used without the usual sound insulation in the interior of the roller shutter box. The sound insulation shell 16 can also be made of a material other than PVC.
[0036] The sound insulation according to the invention acoustically detunes the entire system, so that not only is the volume of sound penetrating a house from outside reduced, but the natural frequency of the roller shutter box is changed, and certain frequencies are particularly strongly dampened.
