Ultra wideband precision geolocation system

An ultra wideband (UWB) or short-pulse transmission system that enables precise tracking or geolocation of a target over distances of several kilometers. The system includes a set of N (where N>2) untethered UWB transceivers located at fixed positions, an untethered UWB receiver at the target, and a processor at the target for resolving time-of-flight measurement ambiguities of received pulses to determine precise geolocation by solving a set of equations according to time-of-flight measurements and surveyed positions of N-1 transceivers. To eliminate a clock distribution system, self-synchronizing of pulse timing is achieved by generating a start pulse at one of the untethered transceivers. Alternatively, a timing source may be provided by a GPS or other timing generator at the transceivers in order to synchronize emissions of their pulses.

Knowledge-based flexible natural speech dialogue system

A knowledge-based natural speech dialogue system includes: (i) a knowledge support system, (ii) a flexible dialogue control system, and (iii) a context information system. Flexibilities of the conversation structure, inherent in mixed-initiative mode for dealing with complex user request, are managed because the knowledge structures involved are represented by additional, powerful knowledge representation tools, and because the context information is retained by more specific data structures, which covers larger temporal scopes by the logic of the conversation, rather than by a fixed locality of the grammar flow. This system provides a simple yet reliable method to compensate for these factors to enable more powerful conversation engines with mixed-initiative capabilities.

Methods and devices for repairing tissue

A suture anchor system for repairing torn or damaged tissue is provided and generally includes a first suture anchor having at least one length of suture attached thereto, and a second suture anchor having at least one length of suture attached thereto. Each length of suture is coupled to one another such that a distance between the first and second suture anchors with respect to each other can be selectively adjustable. The suture anchor system also preferably includes at least one slip knot that allows the first and second suture anchors to be maintained in a fixed position with respect to one another. In use, the suture anchors can be deployed through tissue to be repaired and into the anchoring tissue at a position spaced apart from one another by a selected distance. The suture length(s) can then be tensioned to re-approximate the torn or damaged tissue toward the anchoring tissue, thereby securely attached the torn tissue to the anchoring tissue.

A self-deploying catheter assembly comprises an anchoring device mounted to a tube. A distal end of the anchoring device is held in a fixed position by a releasable suture while a proximal end is freely movable between a proximal position and a distal position defined by a stop on the tube. During insertion into a body cavity, the anchor automatically maintains a low-profile state with the ends spaced apart. Once fully inserted, the anchor self converts into a high-profile state when the tube is slightly withdrawn, bringing the ends closer together. The suture is disengaged to release the distal end of the anchor in order to facilitate a low-profile state for withdrawal of the assembly.

Graphical user interface for a motion video planning and editing system for a computer

A graphical user interface for a computer-assisted motion video editing system directs a user through the process of editing a video program. The graphical user interface may also enables a user to plan a video program. Alternatively selectable interfaces within a single window interface, each of which provide a group of planning, capturing, editing, and recording functions can provide such an interface for producing a video program. Other simplifications to the user interface can be provided to assist in editing, such as by maintaining a video display window for displaying the edited video program at a fixed position for all available editing operations. Additionally, video information can be captured directly into a timeline representation of a video program, rather than a bin. Using a storyboard tied to the capturing process, a user is directed through the process of collecting and capturing the video clips to be used in the video program.

Method and system for identifying, matching and transacting information among portable devices within radio frequency proximity

In today's increasingly populated, yet very busy world, there is a growing need to create community and enable an efficient flow of information through shared interactions; such as matching, alerting, gaming, and commerce. Interactions can be facilitated by advancing technology and the proliferation of wireless devices. Wireless devices and applications can facilitate the matching of people based on similar characteristics, token and data exchanges for gaming situations, or the sending of alerts to warn those entering hazardous areas. With the advent of inexpensive radio frequency (RF) chips and wireless communication standards of many forms, microprocessors (and computing ASICs), and flash memory embedded in many common devices, it is possible to increase the amount of automatic person to person interaction as people pass within RF range of the devices they carry with them or which may reside in fixed locations. The utility of the present invention will describe an application and system whereby current and future portable devices; such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants, pagers, AM / FM radios, music players, key fobs, watches, video playback devices, etc. will seamlessly interact to share information. The utility to the user is derived from systems' ability to match, alert, transact commerce and gaming within a system requiring little to no user intervention beyond the initial configuration. It is anticipated that with the technology described within the current invention: two people will be able to meet in a public setting as they pass each other because they have shared commonalities; individuals will be alerted to hazardous circumstances, perhaps a convicted sex offender in the area, construction zone, or approaching accident scene; groups of people will enjoy gaming opportunities by playing virtual tag with electronic tokens, until the winner is finally tagged; and users will be able to purchase digital content, such as songs, videos, or other streamed or broadcast media, by merely pressing a button on the receiving device. The utility of the current invention will further describe the application and systems which can be made available in a highly portable device or embedded into a host of commercially available devices.

Self Fixing Assembled Bone-Tendon-Bone Graft

The present invention has multiple aspects relating to assembled self fixing bone-tendon-bone (BTB) grafts and BTB implants. A preferred application in which self fixing assembled bone-tendon-bone (BTB) grafts and implants of the present technology can be used is for ACL repairs in a human patient. In one embodiment, a self fixing BTB graft is characterized by the presence of threads along at least a portion of the exterior surface of one or both bone blocks. In another embodiment, a self fixing assembled bone-tendon-bone implant comprises a removable tendon tensioner which imparts a predetermined tension on the tendon of the BTB graft. In this embodiment, the tensioner can be narrower than the diameter of the bone blocks or can be threaded such that the threads are continuous with the threads of at least one of the bone blocks. The threads facilitate the simultaneous implantation of the leading and trailing bone blocks of the BTB graft in tapped (threaded) holes in the tibia and the femur of a recipient patient. The tensioner maintains the tension on the tendon and the spacing between the bone blocks until the leading bone block is fixed (threaded) in the tapped hole in the femur and the trailing bone block is fixed (threaded) into the tapped tibial bone tunnel. Once the bone blocks are substantially in their fixed positions, the tensioner is removed arthroscopically in the joint space between the tibia and the femur.

Accelerated compositing of fixed position elements on an electronic device

A device, system and method are provided for processing structured documents for display. Content of a first viewable portion of the structured document having a fixed position in relation to a viewport is rendered as first rendered image data. Content of a second viewable portion that does not have a fixed position is rendered as second rendered image data. The first and second rendered image data are composited, and a resultant composited image is output for display. In response to a scroll or zoom command applied to the document, and in particular to the second viewable portion, the second rendered image data is updated and composited with the first rendered image data. Compositing can be carried out by a graphics processor separate from a main processor in the electronic device. When no fixed position elements are present in the structured document, the main processor renders the entire content without compositing.
