AI Technical Summary
Current differential drive devices for motor vehicles face inefficiencies in torque transmission dynamics and traction control, particularly when dealing with uneven road conditions, as they rely on mechanical actuators that are slow due to high inertia, and struggle to maintain optimal engagement of axial teeth for effective torque distribution between wheels.
Incorporating a preloaded axial spring to facilitate the engagement of interconnection teeth between the connection slider and the satellite carrier, allowing for quicker transition between disconnected, connected, and locked positions, and using a friction device with alternating friction disks to create a torque difference between wheels, enhancing traction and dynamics.
The solution improves torque transmission dynamics by accelerating engagement and maintaining optimal tooth overlap, enabling better traction and torque distribution, with the axial spring reducing inertia and the friction device enhancing traction capacity by up to 30%.

Abstract
Description
[0001] Differential drive device
[0002] [The invention relates to the field of transmission chains for motor vehicles.
[0003] It relates more particularly to a transmission system comprising a differential drive device intended to transmit and distribute a torque coming from an engine to two wheel shafts of an axle of the vehicle. The differential drive device comprises a first element intended to be driven by an engine and a second element intended to drive one and / or the other of the two wheel shafts of the axle of the vehicle as well as a coupling device capable of selectively coupling the first element to the second element.
[0004] Patent application US2006 / 0270510 describes a differential assembly that includes a differential housing and a pinion housing. The pinion housing includes a first pinion and a second pinion. A first side gear and a second side gear are operatively coupled to the first pinion and the second pinion. A sliding hoop selectively engages at least one of the pinion housing and the first and second side gears. The sliding hoop thus provides three engagement modes which are a disconnected mode, an open mode and a locked mode. The differential assembly includes a spring assembly that is disposed between the housing and the sliding hoop to urge this hoop in the direction opposite to that provided by the actuator.
[0005] The invention aims to improve this type of device.
[0006] The invention thus relates to a differential drive device for a transmission system for a motor vehicle, having an axis of rotation and comprising:
[0007] - a planet carrier carrying a dog toothing, in particular axial,
[0008] - an output planetary gear rotating around the axis of rotation and carrying a dog toothing, in particular radial,
[0009] - an axially movable locking slider equipped with a dog toothing, in particular radial,
[0010] - an axially movable connecting slider provided with a dog toothing, in particular axial, the connecting slider and the locking slider being movable to occupy three axial positions: o a disconnected position in which the dog toothing of the connecting slider is disconnected from the dog toothing of the planet carrier, and the dog toothing of the locking slider is disconnected from the dog toothing of the output sun gear, o a connected position in which the dog toothing of the connecting slider is connected to the dog toothing of the planet carrier, and the dog toothing of the locking slider is disconnected from the dog toothing of the output sun gear, o a blocked position in which the dog toothing of the connecting slider is connected to the dog toothing of the planet carrier, and the dog toothing of the locking slider is connected to the dog toothing of the output planetary gear,
[0011] - a spring arranged to exert a force on the connection slider in the direction of the planet carrier so as, when moving from the disconnected position to the connected position, to promote the engagement of the dog toothing of the connection slider in the dog toothing of the planet carrier.
[0012] An axial dog toothing comprises teeth that protrude axially, in the direction of the axis of rotation.
[0013] A radial dog tooth set comprises teeth that protrude radially, and therefore perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
[0014] According to the invention, by "promoting the engagement of the dog toothing of the connecting slider in the dog toothing of the planet carrier", it is meant that, when moving from the disconnected position to the connected position, when the mating teeth are in relative angular offset so that their engagement is not possible immediately, the spring, which is compressed, can act on the connecting slider as soon as the relative rotation of the teeth places these teeth in a position of mutual engagement. The spring thus helps to accelerate the mutual engagement of the mating teeth, which improves the dynamics of the differential drive device. Indeed, the spring can move the connecting slider more quickly than an actuator alone would because the inertia of the spring is lower.
[0015] In the disconnected position, the torque transmission between the engine and the wheels is disconnected. In the connected position, it is possible to transmit torque between the engine and the axle shafts by exercising the differential function allowing different rotation speeds for the two axle shafts.
[0016] However, when the two opposite wheels face a difference in friction on the road (getting stuck, etc.), it may be necessary to block the operation of the differential to make the two axle shafts turn at the same speed while transmitting different torques.
[0017] In the locked position, relative motion between the output planets is blocked, and both wheels are forced to rotate at the same speed as the differential case.
[0018] According to one aspect of the invention, the spring is an axial spring.
[0019] According to one aspect of the invention, the spring is a prestressed spring. In this case, the spring stores elastic energy permanently, regardless of its position.
[0020] According to one aspect of the invention, the locking slider is fixed in rotation relative to the planet carrier in the connected position.
[0021] According to one aspect of the invention, the connection slider is axially movable and fixed in rotation relative to the planet carrier in the connected position.
[0022] According to one aspect of the invention, the connection slider and the locking slider are arranged so as to be moved by the same actuator.
[0023] According to one aspect of the invention, the spring is arranged between an actuator and the connection slider.
[0024] According to one aspect of the invention, the locking slider and the connection slider are rigidly linked in translation along the axis of rotation, being for example produced on the same part.
[0025] In another exemplary embodiment of the invention, the locking slider and the connection slider are axially movable relative to each other, and the spring is interposed between the locking slider and the connection slider so that the connection slider can be axially moved by the locking slider via the spring.
[0026] In this case, the spring is arranged in particular between the connection and locking sliders. In this case, the stiffness of the spring is in particular such that the locking slider and the connection slider are axially secured when no obstacle opposes the axial movement of the connection slider and / or the locking slider.
[0027] According to one aspect of the invention, the connection slider is arranged to be axially movable relative to the locking slider, between a stop position on a stop of the locking slider and an axial recoil position, recoiling from this stop, in which the spring is compressed.
[0028] According to one aspect of the invention, the spring is prestressed when the connection slider is in the stop position against the stop of the locking slider.
[0029] The pre-stressed spring tends to push the connecting slider against this stop.
[0030] According to one aspect of the invention, the stop on the locking slider is formed by a circlip secured to this locking slider.
[0031] The connection slider thus comes into contact with this circlip when in the disconnected position.
[0032] In the disconnected position, the dog toothing of the connecting slider and the dog toothing of the planet carrier do not overlap, and the dog toothing of the locking slider and the dog toothing of the output planetary gear do not overlap either. The spring can then be in a state of lesser stress, particularly in its initial prestressed state.
[0033] In the connected position, the dog toothing of the connecting slider and the dog toothing of the planet carrier are in axial overlap, and the spring can still be in a state of lesser stress, in particular in its initial pre-stressed state.
[0034] According to one aspect of the invention, the dog toothing of the connecting slider and the dog toothing of the planet carrier extend axially.
[0035] Thus, the spring not only serves to facilitate the engagement of the connecting slider by storing energy in the event of interference, but it also favors the implementation of axial rather than radial teeth. The implementation of axial teeth is advantageous because it allows in particular to have a tooth profile with anti-release. Without a spring, with such axial teeth, the connected / unlocked position would involve the implementation of long axial teeth with a partial axial overlap of the teeth of these teeth, to allow additional axial movement to reach the other connected / locked position, which is not optimal for the transmission of torque. It is indeed preferable for the axial teeth to engage all the way to the bottom of the teeth to transmit a torque. Thanks to the spring, it is possible to implement teeth that fully engage with each other in the connected / unlocked position.
[0036] According to one aspect of the invention, the device comprises a friction device arranged to create a torque difference between two wheels linked to the differential drive device, in particular in the connected mode.
[0037] A perfect differential, i.e. without internal friction, would distribute the input torque perfectly symmetrically between the two wheels connected to this differential, in a ratio of 50 / 50. In the event that one wheel loses its grip (for example in the presence of a patch of ice or mud), the torque on the other wheel is also cancelled out and the vehicle loses its traction. By deliberately adding the friction device which generates constant and / or proportional friction between moving parts of the differential, it is possible to create a torque difference between the two wheels, constant or proportional to the input torque, and improve the vehicle's off-road ability. Without an additional device, the torque difference between the two wheels is in the order of 3 to 5%. With an additional friction device, passive or active, differences of around 30% can be achieved.
[0038] According to one aspect of the invention, the friction device comprises a stack of friction discs.
[0039] According to one aspect of the invention, the device further comprises an output planetary gear opposite the aforementioned output planetary gear and the friction device is placed between this opposite output planetary gear and the planet carrier. A first set of friction discs are integral in rotation with the opposite output planetary gear, in particular by means of teeth and splines. A second set of friction discs are integral in rotation with the planet carrier, in particular by means of teeth and splines. The discs of the first set and the second set are arranged alternately so as to obtain a multitude of friction surfaces. The conical teeth of the opposite output planetary gear make it possible, when the latter rotates, to press the friction discs against each other to generate a friction torque.
[0040] Alternatively, the first set of friction discs can be driven by the differential housing. Thus, the manufacture of the planet carrier is simplified. In the locked position, the axial teeth of the connecting sliding gear and the planet carrier are in axial overlap, the connecting sliding gear is in axial abutment on the differential housing or the planet carrier, the spring is compressed, and the radial dog teeth of the locking sliding gear and the output sun gear are in radial overlap. The connecting sliding gear is in an axial recoil position, recoiling from the stop of the locking sliding gear.
[0041] According to one aspect of the invention, the teeth of the satellite carrier and the teeth of the output planetary gear are arranged inside the differential housing.
[0042] These teeth of the locking slider and the output planetary gear, because they are of the radial type, allow a greater overlap length which is not penalizing because the dynamics for blocking the differential drive device, which takes place when the vehicle is stopped, are less critical than the dynamics for connection / disconnection.
[0043] According to one aspect of the invention, the device comprises a differential housing and the planet carrier can rotate freely in the differential housing when the connecting slider is in a disconnected position.
[0044] The device comprises a differential housing and the locking slider is in prismatic connection with the differential housing.
[0045] According to one aspect of the invention, this prismatic connection is achieved by respective axial splines of the locking slider and the differential housing, splines which are meshed to allow relative translation while blocking relative rotation.
[0046] According to one aspect of the invention, the locking slider is provided with radial dog teeth.
[0047] According to one aspect of the invention, the dog clutch teeth of the connecting slider and the dog clutch teeth of the planet carrier have axial dog clutch teeth, in particular of the anti-release type.
[0048] As is known in the state of the art, anti-release type dog clutch teeth have clearances and undercuts with angles chosen to ensure that the teeth cannot spontaneously disengage while transmitting torque, thereby preventing untimely disconnection.
[0049] In general, the conjugate pairs of teeth can be axial or radial, with or without an anti-release angle. The invention also relates to a transmission system comprising the aforementioned differential drive device and an actuator, this actuator being arranged to move the locking slider and the connection slider into the three disconnected, connected and blocked positions, and in a reverse sequence.
[0050] Thus the actuator is arranged to return the sliders to the disconnected position.
[0051] The locking slider transmits the force from the actuator to the connection slider, via the spring.
[0052] According to one aspect of the invention, the locking slider comprises a groove arranged to cooperate with the actuator.
[0053] The invention will be better understood, and other objects, details, characteristics and advantages thereof will appear more clearly during the following description of several particular embodiments of the invention, given solely for illustrative and non-limiting purposes, with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0055] Figure 2 is a perspective and sectional view of the differential drive device of Figure 1, in the disconnected position.
[0056] Figure 3 is a perspective and sectional view of the differential drive device of Figure 1, in the connected position.
[0057] Figure 4 is a perspective and sectional view of the differential drive device of Figure 1, in the locked position.
[0058] Figure 5 is a perspective and sectional view of the locking slider of the differential drive device of Figure 1.
[0059] Figure 6 is a detailed perspective view of the differential housing and sliding gears of Figure 1.
[0060] Figure 7 is a schematic view of a second embodiment.
[0061] In the description and claims, by convention, the X axis of rotation of the differential housing defines the "axial" orientation. The "radial" orientation is directed orthogonally to the X axis.
[0062] Figure 1 illustrates a transmission system 1 according to one embodiment. The transmission system 1 comprises a differential drive device 2. The differential drive device 2 is intended to rotate two wheel shafts 3, 4 of an axle of a vehicle and is configured to distribute a torque coming from a motor, not shown, to the two wheel shafts 3, 4, allowing them to rotate at different speeds.
[0063] Such a transmission system 1 is for example intended for a hybrid vehicle. Thus, the transmission system 1 is, for example, capable of transmitting torque from an electric motor to a rear or front axle of the vehicle while another transmission system coupled to another engine, such as a heat engine, makes it possible to generate torque and transmit it between this other engine and the two wheel shafts of the other axle of the vehicle. The vehicle can also be fully electric.
[0064] The differential drive device 2 comprises a first assembly 5, rotatable about the X axis, which is intended to be kinematically coupled to a motor by means of a reduction device, not shown. The differential drive device 2 also comprises a second assembly 6, also rotatable about the X axis and intended to drive the wheel shafts 3, 4.
[0065] The first assembly 5 of the differential drive device 2 comprises a differential housing 8. The differential housing 8 comprises two parts 10, 11 which are fixed to each other.
[0066] The second assembly 6 of the differential drive device 2 comprises a ring-shaped planet carrier 12, which is guided in rotation, around the axis X, inside the differential housing 8. The second assembly 6 further comprises geared planets 14, as well as two geared sun gears 15, 16.
[0067] The planet gears 14 are mounted for rotation on the planet carrier 12 about an axis Y, perpendicular to the axis X. In a manner known per se, the planet gears 14 each comprise a bevel gear which meshes with a complementary bevel gear of the two sun gears 15, 16. The two sun gears 15, 16 are rotatable about the axis X and are each integral in rotation with one of the two wheel shafts 3, 4 respectively. The planet carrier 12, the planet gears 14 and the sun gears 15, 16 thus form a differential allowing the two wheel shafts 3, 4 to rotate, if necessary, at different speeds.
[0068] The differential drive device 2 comprises:
[0069] - the planet carrier 12 carrying axial dog teeth 20,
[0070] - the output planetary gear 16 rotating around the axis of rotation X and carrying a radial dog toothing 21, - a locking slider 24 axially movable and provided with a radial dog toothing 25, as better seen in figure 5, a connection slider 27 axially movable and provided with an axial dog toothing 28.
[0071] The connection slider 27 and the locking slider 24 are movable to occupy three axial positions:
[0072] - a disconnected position in which the dog toothing 28 of the connecting slider 27 is disconnected from the dog toothing 20 of the planet carrier 12, and the dog toothing 25 of the locking slider 24 is disconnected from the dog toothing 21 of the output sun gear 16 (position illustrated in figures 1 and 2),
[0073] - a connected position in which the dog toothing 28 of the connecting slider 27 is connected to the dog toothing 20 of the planet carrier 12, and the dog toothing 25 of the locking slider 24 is disconnected from the dog toothing 21 of the output planetary gear 16 (position illustrated in the figure
[0074] 3),
[0075] - a locked position in which the dog toothing 28 of the connecting slider 27 is connected to the dog toothing 20 of the planet carrier 12, and the dog toothing 25 of the locking slider 24 is connected to the dog toothing 21 of the output sun gear 16 (position illustrated in the figure
[0076] 4).
[0077] The device 2 further comprises a prestressed axial spring 30 arranged to exert a force on the connection slider 27 in the direction of the planet carrier 12 so as, when moving from the disconnected position to the connected position, to promote the engagement of the dog toothing 28 of the connection slider 27 in the dog toothing 20 of the planet carrier 12.
[0078] This spring 30 is, in the example described, coiled.
[0079] The axial dog teeth 20 and 28 comprise teeth which project axially, in the direction of the axis of rotation.
[0080] The radial dog teeth 21 and 25 comprise teeth which project radially, and therefore perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
[0081] In the disconnected position, the torque transmission between the engine and the wheels is disconnected. In the connected position, it is possible to transmit torque between the engine and the wheel shafts 2, 3 by exercising the differential function allowing different rotation speeds for the two wheel shafts.
[0082] In the locked position, relative motion between the output planets is blocked, and both wheels are forced to rotate at the same speed as the differential case, regardless of any difference in traction between the wheels.
[0083] The locking slider 24 is fixed in rotation relative to the differential housing 8. The locking slider 24 is fixed in rotation relative to the planet carrier 12 in the connected position.
[0084] The connection slider 27 is fixed in rotation relative to the differential housing 8. The connection slider 27 is axially movable and fixed in rotation relative to the planet carrier 12 in the connected position.
[0085] The connection slider 27 and the locking slider 24 are arranged so as to be moved by the same actuator 32.
[0086] In the example described, the locking slider 24 and the connection slider 27 are axially movable relative to each other, and the spring 30 is interposed between the locking slider 24 and the connection slider 27 so that the connection slider 27 can be axially moved by the locking slider 24 via the spring 30.
[0087] In this case, the spring 30 is arranged between the connection 27 and locking 24 sliders.
[0088] The stiffness of the spring 30 is chosen such that the locking slider 24 and the connection slider 27 are axially secured when no obstacle opposes the axial movement of the connection slider 27 and / or the locking slider 24.
[0089] The connecting slider 27 is arranged to be axially movable relative to the locking slider 24, between a stop position on a stop 33 of the locking slider 24 and an axial recoil position, recoiling from this stop 33, in which the spring 30 is compressed.
[0090] The spring 30 is prestressed when the connection slider 27 is in the stop position against the stop 33 of the locking slider 24.
[0091] The pre-stressed spring 30 tends to push the connection slider 27 against this stop 33 formed by a circlip secured to this locking slider 24. Thus the connection slider 27 comes to abut against this circlip 33 when in the disconnected position.
[0092] The spring 30 rests, at its end opposite the connection slider 27, on a stop formed by a circlip 34.
[0093] In the disconnected position, the dog toothing 28 of the connecting slider 27 and the dog toothing 20 of the planet carrier 12 do not overlap, and the dog toothing 25 of the locking slider 24 and the dog toothing 21 of the output planetary gear 16 do not overlap either.
[0094] In the connected position, the dog toothing 28 of the connection slider 27 and the dog toothing 20 of the planet carrier 12 are in axial overlap, and the spring 30 is in a state of lesser stress, in its initial prestressed state.
[0095] The dog toothing 28 of the connecting slider 27 and the dog toothing 20 of the planet carrier 12 extend axially.
[0096] The device 2 comprises a friction device 40 arranged to create a torque difference between the shafts 3, 4 of the two wheels connected to the differential drive device 2, in the connected mode.
[0097] By deliberately adding the friction device 40, which generates constant and / or proportional friction between moving parts of the differential, it is possible to create a torque difference between the two wheels, constant or proportional to the input torque, and improve the vehicle's off-road capability. Without an additional device, the torque difference between the two wheels is in particular of the order of 3 to 5%. With an additional friction device, passive or active, differences of the order of 30% can be achieved.
[0098] The friction device 40 comprises a stack of friction discs 41.
[0099] The friction device 40 is placed between the opposite output planetary gear 15 and the planet carrier 12.
[0100] A first set 60 of fiction discs are integral in rotation with the opposite output sun gear 15, in particular by means of teeth and splines. A second set 61 of fiction discs are integral in rotation with the planet carrier 12, in particular by means of teeth and splines. The discs of the first set 60 and of the second set 61 are arranged alternately so as to obtain a multitude of friction surfaces. The conical teeth of the opposite output sun gear 15 make it possible, during rotation of the latter, to press the friction discs 41 against each other to generate a friction torque. In the locked position illustrated in Figure 3, the axial teeth of the connecting slider 27 and the planet carrier 12 are in axial overlap, the connecting slider 27 is in axial abutment on the planet carrier 12, the spring 30 is compressed, and the radial dog teeth of the locking slider 24 and the output planetary gear 16 are in radial overlap.
[0101] The teeth 20 of the planet carrier 12 and the teeth 21 of the output planetary gear 16 are arranged inside the differential housing 8 and inside a gearbox casing. Thus the mobile connecting 27 and locking 24 rollers benefit from the lubrication of the gearbox.
[0102] The satellite carrier 2 can rotate freely in the differential housing 8 when the connection slider 27 is in a disconnected position (figure 1).
[0103] The locking slider 24 is in prismatic connection with the differential housing 8.
[0104] This prismatic connection is achieved by respective axial splines 47 and 48 of the locking slider 24 and the differential housing 8, splines which are meshed to allow relative translation while blocking relative rotation.
[0105] The splines 48 are made on a sleeve 49 of the differential housing 8.
[0106] This sleeve 49 carries a circlip 50 forming a stop for the locking slider 24.
[0107] The dog clutch teeth 28 of the connecting slider 27 and the dog clutch teeth 20 of the planet carrier 12 have axial dog clutch teeth of the anti-release type.
[0108] As is known in the state of the art, anti-release type dog clutch teeth have clearances and undercuts with angles chosen to ensure that the teeth cannot spontaneously disengage while transmitting torque, thereby preventing untimely disconnection.
[0109] The actuator 32 is arranged to move the locking slider 24 and the connection slider 27 successively into the three positions disconnected (figures 1 and 2), connected (figure 3) and blocked (figure 4), and in a reverse sequence.
[0110] The locking slider 24 transmits the force from the actuator 32 to the connection slider, via the spring.
[0111] The locking slider 24 comprises a groove 55 arranged to cooperate with the actuator 32 which has a fork shape at this location.
[0112] The actuator 32 is here an electromagnetic type actuator. Figure 6 illustrates certain details of the locking 24 and connection 27 sliders. It can be seen, for example, that complementary axial grooves 35, 36 provided respectively on the locking slider 24 and the connection slider 27 make it possible to block the relative rotation between these two sliders 24 and 27. Thus, the connection slider 27 is integral in rotation with the differential housing 8 via, on the one hand, the complementary grooves 35, 36 which secure it in rotation with the locking slider 24, and on the other hand, the axial grooves 47 and 48 of the locking slider 24 and the differential housing 8.
[0113] According to a variant not shown, the locking slider 24 and the connection slider 27 are secured in rotation with the differential housing 8 thanks to a correspondence of shape between the connection sliders 27 and the locking slider 24 and windows 51 of the differential housing 8.
[0114] Figure 7 shows, schematically, a second embodiment in which the connection slider 27 and the locking slider 24 are axially secured. They can, for example, be manufactured in the same part. They jointly form a double slider 65.
[0115] The spring 30 is kinematically arranged between the actuator 32 and the double sliding member 65. Thus, the same spring makes it possible to manage both the dog clutch interferences of the connection sliding member 27 and the dog clutch interferences of the blocking sliding member 24.
