Description

[0001] A SYSTEM FOR FLOOR CASTING

[0002] Field of the invention

[0003] The invention relates to a system for floor casting. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for casting a floor by using the system. The invention also relates to a kit of parts for floor casting.

[0004] At present, casting a floor comprises many manual work steps. Elevation of the top edge of the floor is measured and marked at the foot of a wall. The space to be cast is filled with casting compound, and the casting compound is compacted and levelled by using, for example, trowels or a smoothing spatula. The future floor is levelled by using, for example, a laser leveller, a bubble level, and / or various straight-edge rules. Once the floor is dry, the final result is inspected and possible unevenness is corrected by levelling.

[0005] At present, levelling a cast floor is fully manual work, whereby the surface of the cast floor is often slightly uneven. The unevenness has to be fixed afterwards, which increases work steps and thereby working hours and costs.

[0006] The possibility of failure of the casting causes a particular risk in bathrooms and wet rooms with a floor drain. The floors of such rooms have to be sloped towards the floor drain so that any water that has ended up on the floor can be conveyed away from the floor. Conventionally, casting of a floor in a space with a floor drain is fully manual work. Elevation of the top edge of the floor to be cast is measured from the top edge of the floor drain to the foot of the wall so that the required slope towards the floor drain is obtained. So-called pads are cast at the foot of the wall by using a laser leveller and a bubble level, to make the edge of the floor straight. After this, the space between these pads and the floor drain is filled with casting compound. The compound is compacted and levelled by using, for example, a mortar trowel, a notched trowel or a smoothing spatula, a bubble level, and straight-edge rules. A local discharge with a steeper incline is provided in the vicinity of the floor drain. Once the floor is dry, the final result is inspected and possible unevenness is fixed by levelling before starting waterproofing. If the slope is insufficient or inclined in a wrong direction, a leak may occur which can cause moisture damage. This is particularly true in connection with larger floor areas and / or spaces having a shape different from a square.

[0007] Brief summary

[0008] The system for floor casting according to the invention comprises at least one elevation bar 10 to be fastened to a wall, for defining the top edge of a floor to be cast, at least one guide string 11 , and at least a first and a second fastening point for fastening the guide string so that at least the first fastening point is arranged in the elevation bar 10. The guide string is arranged to extend from the first fastening point to the second fastening point.

[0009] The invention also relates to a method for floor casting. The method comprises at least the following steps:

[0010] - measuring an elevation of the top edge of a floor to be cast, at the foot of the wall,

[0011] - fastening at least one elevation bar 10 to the wall, at the elevation of the floor to be cast, so that at least a first fastening point for a guide string is provided in the elevation bar 10,

[0012] - arranging a second fastening point for the guide string 11 in the space to be cast,

[0013] - fastening the guide string 11 to the first fastening point and the second fastening point, and tightening up the guide string,

[0014] - filling the space to be cast with casting compound,

[0015] - levelling and compacting the casting compound to be flush with the top edge of the guide string.

[0016] The invention has the advantage that the surface of the floor to be cast can be levelled throughout in a single work step. When the casting compound is levelled and compacted to be flush with the top edge of the guide string, there will be no unevenness which should be levelled afterwards in a separate work step. The reduction in the number of work steps, in turn, speeds up the casting work and thereby saves working hours and costs. Consequently, the invention has the advantage that floor casting can be performed in a reproducible way and with high quality.

[0017] Another advantage of the invention is that use of separate straight-edge rules is avoided. In the system according to the invention, conventional straightedge rules are replaced by a guide string which does not move once tightened. It is easy to level the casting compound to be flush with the top edge of the future floor when the guide string indicating the top edge is visible all the time during the casting. of the drawings

[0024] Detailed description

[0025] As already stated above, conventional floor casting and particularly the making of slopes in rooms with floor drains is purely manual work. The system and the method according to the invention reduce the number of manual work steps in floor casting and speeds up the work.

[0026] The elevation bar according to the invention and the first fastening point for a guide string are installed to be flush with the top edge (elevation) hi of the future floor. The elevation of the top edge of the floor refers to the highest point of the floor to be cast (see Fig. 3a). A second fastening point can be installed either at the same elevation hi or at a lower elevation h2 than the elevation bar 10. By installing at the same elevation, it is possible to make a very precisely horizontal floor. On the other hand, if the second fastening point is arranged at a lower elevation than the elevation bar 10 and the first fastening point, the guide string will extend at an inclined angle ai to the horizontal plane, and a sloping floor can be made. The angle ai may be 0.3 to1.0°, preferably 0.4 to 0.8°, particularly approximately 0.57° so that the height difference of the floor over a distance of one meter is 0.5 to 1.7 cm, preferably 0.7 to 1.4 cm, particularly about 1 cm.

[0027] Height of an elevation bar 10 according to the invention is 2 to 10 cm, preferably 3 to 8 cm, particularly advantageously 4 to 5 cm. The width of the elevation bar is 1 to 2 cm, preferably approximately 1 .5 cm. The profile of the elevation bar has the shape of a rectangle, preferably a rectangle with one long side open so that the closed side of the rectangle is used to fasten the elevation bar to a wall. In the vicinity of the elevation bar, the casting compound is levelled and compacted to be flush with the top edge of the elevation bar.

[0028] The guide string 11 according to the invention may be made of any material suitable for the purpose, such as plastic, cotton, wood fibre, recycled fibre, or a combination of these. The guide string may be, for example, braided or woven band, and it can be easily cut to a suitable length, for example, with scissors or a knife. The guide string may have a thickness of, for example, 0.5 to 5 mm, preferably approximately 2 mm, and a width of approximately 1 to 3 cm, preferably approximately 1.5 to 2 cm. The guide string may be installed flatwise or upright, preferably upright. A guide string according to the invention is shown in Fig. 2a.

[0029] The elevation bar 10 and the guide string 11 remain stationary during the whole casting process, and they define the top edge of the future floor. When applying the method according to the invention, the elevation bar 10 and the guide string 11 remain embedded in the casting, except for their top surface.

[0030] The system according to the invention may also comprise a clamp for tightening the guide string. By means of the clamp, the guide string can be quickly tightened up so that the top edge of the guide string extends flush with the top surface of the future floor. The system may also comprise several clamps, if necessary. Alternatively, the guide string may also be tightened manually.

[0031] The system according to the invention comprises at least a first and a second fastening point for the guide string. At least the first fastening point is provided in the elevation bar. In an embodiment, the system comprises several fastening points, such as 3 to 50 fastening points, or even an unlimited number of fastening points. In this case, the user may select the fastening point to which the guide string is fastened each time. It is also possible for the user to move the guide string to a desired position between two different fastening points.

[0032] The fastening point and / or fastening points may comprise, for example, a groove, a rail, or a perforation in the elevation bar 10. In a preferred embodiment, the fastening point and / or fastening points consist of a groove formed in the elevation bar when the profile of the elevation bar has the shape of a rectangle with one long side open. Cross-sections of elevation bars according to some embodiments of the invention are shown in Figs. 4a to 4c.

[0033] In an embodiment of the invention, at least two fastening points are provided with fastening means 12 for fastening a guide string. The fastening means comprise loops, hooks, clips, or other fasteners, by which the guide string can be fastened to each fastening point. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the fastening means are loops. The loops can be slid to a desired location in the groove formed in the elevation bar or at the edge of a collar, and the loops can be locked by twisting. The guide string can be threaded through the loops either before or after slipping the loops into an elevation bar or the edge of a collar. The loops secure the guide string to the fastening points.

[0034] The system according to an embodiment of the invention comprises more than one elevation bar 10, for example 2 to 10 elevation bars. In an embodiment, the system comprises two elevation bars so that the first fastening point is arranged in the first elevation bar and the second fastening point is arranged in the second elevation bar. The first and second elevation bars are installed at the same elevation on different walls of the space to be cast. The guide string is arranged to extend from the first fastening point to the second fastening point; that is, from the first elevation bar to the second elevation bar.

[0035] In an embodiment of the invention, the system comprises several guide strings, for example 2 to 20 guide strings, each arranged to extend between two different fastening points, for example a first guide string from a first fastening point to a second fastening point, a second guide string from a third fastening point to a fourth fastening point, etc. Thanks to the plurality of guide strings, the levelling of the casting compound to a desired elevation level is facilitated further, and the casting is even over the whole area of the space. The spacing between the guide strings may be 25 to 100 cm, preferably 40 to 70 cm, particularly advantageously 50 to 60 cm. The system may thus comprise several clamps, preferably one clamp for each guide string. Systems according to this embodiment are shown, by way of example, in Figs. 1a and 1 b. The system of Fig. 1 a comprises two elevation bars 10 on opposite walls of the space to be cast. Each elevation bar is provided with five fastening means 12 at respective fastening points, and five guide strings 11 are arranged to extend from one elevation bar to the other. The system of Fig. 1 b comprises four elevation bars 10, one on each wall delimiting the space to be cast. Fastening means 12 are provided at fastening points on the elevation bars, and six guide strings 11 are arranged to extend between the different fastening points.

[0036] Alternatively, the system may comprise a single guide string which is arranged to extend from a first fastening point via a second fastening point to a third or more fastening points, for example from the first elevation bar to the second elevation bar and further to the third elevation bar and / or back to the first elevation bar but to a point different from the starting point. The guide string may criss-cross between several fastening points over the whole area of the space to be cast. Typically, the system comprises 2 to 20 guide string sections between the different fastening points. The spacing of the different sections of the guide string between the different fastening points may be 20 to 100 cm, preferably 40 to 70 cm, particularly preferably 50 to 60 cm. Figures 1 c and 1 d show, by way of example, systems according to this embodiment. The system of Fig. 1 c comprises two elevation bars 10 on opposite walls of the space to be cast. Each elevation bar is provided with three fastening means 12 at respective fastening points, and a single guide string 11 is arranged to crisscross between the fastening points. The system of Fig. 1 d comprises four elevation bars 10, one on each wall delimiting the space to be cast. Fastening means 12 are provided at respective fastening points on the elevation bars, and a single guide string 11 is arranged to criss-cross between the fastening points.

[0037] Particularly in spaces having a large size and / or an irregular shape, it is reasonable to use several elevation bars and / or several guide strings and / or a single guide string extending via several fastening points, to be able to level the floor casting throughout the area of the space to be cast.

[0038] In an embodiment of the invention, the guide string 11 further comprises fastening elements 14 for fastening an additional element, such as a cable or a pipe, preferably a floor heating cable or a floor heating water pipe, to the guide string. Correspondingly, in the method according to an embodiment, an additional element, such as a cable or a pipe, is installed on the guide string, for example for installing floor heating. A guide string according to this embodiment is shown, by way of example, in Figs. 2b and 2c. The guide string 11 may comprise a indentation or indentations 15, in which the additional element is installed. At the indentation or indentations, the guide string is narrower than in other sections. The indentation or indentations 15 may be arranged in the guide string at the manufacturing stage, for example by weaving the string narrower at the location of the indentation or indentations. Alternatively, the string may be notched at the desired locations, for example, by a knife or a sheath-knife, at the stage of installing the additional element. The additional element can be installed in the guide string 11 by pressing it into the indentation or indentations. Alternatively or in addition, the additional element can be installed in the indentation or indentations 15 by using fastening elements 14. The fastening elements 14 may be made of a rigid material, such as metal or plastic. The fastening elements 14 are configured to withstand the weight of the additional element. The fastening elements 14 may be, for example, hooks or hangers whose top edge is pressed to the indentation or indentations 15 in the string. The additional element can be fastened, for example, by hanging the additional element on the lower part of the fastening elements 14 or by slipping it through the fastening elements 14. The additional element is embedded in the casting, at a distance of approximately 0.5 to 5 cm, preferably 1 to 3 cm, particularly approximately 1 cm, from the surface of the casting.

[0039] This embodiment has the advantage that, for example, floor heating can be installed in the casting at a uniform distance from the surface of the floor over the whole area to be cast. In this way, thermal energy is spread more evenly and in a more predictable way through the floor. In the conventional method, floor heating is installed on the bottom of the casting, whereby the thickness of the casting layer on top of the floor heating element may be even 8 to 10 cm. Thus, energy is needed for heating the whole mass on top, resulting in waste of energy. For example in rooms with a floor drain, the sloped casting is the thicker, the farther away it is from the floor drain, whereby also the floor heating element is farther away from the surface of the floor in the area of the thicker casting, which increases the waste of energy further.

[0040] The function of the floor heating may be, in addition to keep the floor, room or apartment warm, also to remove water from the floor by evaporation. If the casting layer is too thick, the capacity of the floor heating is not necessarily sufficient to dry the water left on the floor. This may, in the worst case, lead to moisture damage. When applying the present embodiment, the floor will dry securely and evenly, because the floor heating element can be installed closer to the surface of the casting than by the conventional method. In this way, evaporation of water left on the floor can be ensured, and the floor will dry evenly throughout the area. The method according to this embodiment may also reduce the consumption of energy for the heating, because a thinner layer of casting is heated by the floor heating element, compared with the conventional method. This brings both environmental and economic benefits. This embodiment can be combined particularly with embodiments in which the system comprises more than one guide string, or in which a single guide string is arranged to extend between several fastening points over the whole area to be cast. Thus, the additional element, such as a cable or a pipe, can be fastened at a number of different positions to each guide string or to each section of a guide string extending between two fastening points, to ensure uniform fastening of the additional element and constant spacing from the surface of the casting over the whole area to be worked on. The system and the method according to the invention can also be applied in rooms with floor drains, for casting the floor and shaping the required slopes. Compared with the conventional method, the invention has the advantage of securing successful slopes, because by using the guide string, the slope to the drain is implemented in a secure and reproducible way. When the casting compound is levelled and compacted to be flush with the top edge of the guide string, the floor to be cast will slope evenly at the angle of the guide string towards the floor drain. The floor drain may be placed, for example, at the centre of the space to be cast, or in the vicinity of a wall delimiting the space to be cast. The floor drain may have any shape; preferably, the floor drain is circular or rectangular.

[0041] A system according to an embodiment of the invention further comprises a collar 13 to be arranged in the floor drain. The collar 13 defines the required local discharge in the vicinity of the floor drain. The second fastening point according to the invention is arranged at the outer edge of the collar 13. The outer edge of the collar 13 may also comprise several fastening points, for example 2 to 50 fastening points, or even an unlimited number of fastening points. In a preferred embodiment, the fastening point and / or fastening points comprise(s) a groove at the outer edge of the collar. Figures 4d and 4e show some cross-sectional views of a collar according to this embodiment.

[0042] The guide string 11 is arranged to extend from a first fastening point to a second fastening point, in other words, from the elevation bar 10 to the collar 13. The collar 13 is installed in the floor drain preferably by pressing it along the edges of the floor drain. The size of the floor drain and thereby the collar used may vary. In an example, a circular floor drain has a diameter of 167 mm. The collar section to be pressed into the floor drain should have a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the floor drain so that the collar can be fitted in the floor drain. When using a system such as in this embodiment, the casting compound is applied so that the space under the collar 13 is also filled with the casting compound. Systems according to this embodiment are shown, by way of example, in Figs. 3, 5 and 6. Figure 3a shows a cross-section of the system in a Sx, Syplane, and Fig. 3b shows the system in a Sx, Szplane correspondingly. The system comprises an elevation bar 10 installed at the elevation hi on the wall, a collar 13 arranged in a floor drain, and a guide string 11 arranged to extend from the elevation bar 10 to the collar 13. The elevation of the collar from the bottom of the casting is h2, and the width of the collar from the outer edge of the floor drain outwards is X. The guide string is fastened to the elevation bar 10 and to the outer edge of the collar 13 by fastening means 12.

[0043] In a system according to an embodiment, the collar 13 may extend around the floor drain to form a steeper local discharge in the vicinity of the floor drain. The collar 13 defines the local discharge needed. The guide string 11 is arranged to extend from the first fastening point to the second fastening point so that the guide string extends from the elevation bar 10 to the outer edge of the collar 13. The width X of the collar 13 from the outer edge of the floor drain outwards may be 0 to 50 cm, for example 5 to 30 cm from the outer edge of the floor drain outwards, preferably about 25 cm from the outer edge of the floor drain outwards. The outer edge of the collar is arranged higher than the edge delimited by the floor drain so that the collar forms an angle 02 to the horizontal plane. The angle 02 may be 0.6 to 2.0°, preferably 0.8 to 1.6°, particularly approximately 1.15° so that the elevation difference within a distance of 0.5 m at the collar is 0.5 to 1.7 cm, preferably 0.7 to 1.4 cm, particularly approximately 1 cm.

[0044] In a particularly preferred embodiment, the angle 02 is greater than the angle ai; in other words, the slope of the floor is steeper at the collar than outside the collar, farther away from the floor drain. The collar 13 defines the local discharge needed. Thus, when the casting compound is levelled to the elevation of the top edge of the guide string, all the way to the outer edge of the collar, the collar will provide a steeper local discharge in the vicinity of the floor drain.

[0045] In a system according to an embodiment of the invention, the collar 13 comprises several fastening points, and the system comprises several guide strings 11 , each arranged to extend from a first fastening point in the elevation bar 10 to a second fastening point in the collar 13. Preferably, the system comprises 2 to 10 guide strings along the length of a single elevation bar. Correspondingly, the method according to the embodiment comprises a step of fastening each guide string to a first fastening point in the elevation bar 10 and to a second fastening point in the collar 13, and tightening each guide string. The guide strings may be arranged to extend radially between the elevation bar and the collar. The spacing between the guide strings in the vicinity of the walls may be 25 to 100 cm, preferably 40 to 70 cm, particularly advantageously 50 to 60 cm. Thanks to the plurality of guide strings, the levelling of the casting compound to the desired elevation is facilitated further, and the slope towards the floor drain is uniform over the whole area between the elevation bar and the collar. Systems according to this embodiment are shown in Figs. 5a, 5b, and 6a. Figures 5a and 5b show a system in which two fastening points are provided in the elevation bar 10 and the collar 13 each, and two guide strings 11 are arranged to extend from the elevation bar to different fastening points in the collar. The guide string 11 is fastened to the fastening points with fastening means 12.

[0046] Alternatively, the collar 13 comprises several fastening points, and the system comprises a single guide string 11 which is arranged to extend from a first fastening point via a second fastening point to a third or more fastening points, for example from the elevation bar to the collar and back to the elevation bar but to a point different from the starting point. The guide string may criss-cross between several fastening points over the whole area of the space to be cast. Different sections of the guide string may be arranged to extend radially between the elevation bar and the collar. The system may also comprise several elevation bars, wherein the guide string may be arranged to extend from a first elevation bar via the collar to a second and / or more elevation bars. The guide string may criss-cross between the collar and several elevation bars within the whole area of the space to be cast. Typically, the system comprises 2 to 10 sections of the guide string between different fastening points within the length of one elevation bar. The spacing between the different sections of the guide string between the different fastening points in the vicinity of the wall may be 25 to 150 cm, preferably 40 to 100 cm, particularly advantageously 50 to 60 cm. Systems according to this embodiment are presented in Figs. 5c, 5d, 6b, 6c, and 6d. The system of Figs. 5c and 5d comprises an elevation bar 10 provided with two fastening points, and a collar 13 provided with one fastening point. The fastening points are provided with fastening means 12, by which the guide string 11 is arranged to extend from the elevation bar 10 to the collar 13 and back to the elevation bar 10.

[0047] In an embodiment of the invention, the system comprises one elevation bar for each wall delimiting the floor to be cast. In a corresponding manner, the method according to this embodiment comprises a step in which one elevation bar is installed for each wall delimiting the floor to be cast. Each elevation bar may be provided with a fastening point or several fastening points for the guide string. The user can thus freely select the fastening point or fastening points, to which the guide string will be fastened. It is also possible to fasten several guide strings so that the guide string or guide strings criss-cross throughout the area of the space to be cast. Particularly advantageously, the guide string or a section thereof is arranged to extend from each corner of the space to be cast towards the floor drain. The spacing of the guide string or its sections between the different fastening points in the vicinity of the walls may be 25 to 150 cm, preferably 40 to 100 cm, particularly advantageously 50 to 60 cm. The advantage is the ease in levelling the casting throughout the space to be cast, even in spaces with irregular shapes. Figures 6a to 6d show systems in which an elevation bar 10 is fastened to each wall of the space to be cast, and a guide string or guide strings 11 are arranged to extend radially from each elevation bar 10 towards the collar 13. In particular, guide strings are arranged to extend from each corner of the space to be cast towards the collar 13. Figure 6a shows a solution with several guide strings 11 , and Figs. 6b to 6d show solutions in which a single guide string is arranged to criss-cross throughout the area of the space to be cast.

[0048] In an embodiment of the invention, the elevation bar to be fastened to the wall comprises the necessary insulation material. In this way, installation of a separation insulation at the elevation bar is avoided, which facilitates and simplifies the installation work.

[0049] In an embodiment of the invention, the elevation bar 10 and the collar 13 consist of plastic. As a material, plastic is light-weight, inexpensive and easily mouldable, which makes it simple and cost-efficient to manufacture the elevation bar, the collar and the frame. The invention also relates to a kit of parts for floor casting. The kit of parts comprises a length of elevation bar 10 for defining the top edge of the floor to be cast, and a length of guide string 11 . Alternatively, the kit of parts may also comprise a clamp for tightening the guide string, fastening means 12 for fastening the guide string to fastening points, a collar 13 for the floor drain, and fastening elements 14 for fastening an additional element, such as a cable or a pipe, to the guide string 11 . The guide string 11 and the elevation bar 10 may be cuttable to a suitable length. The features of the invention described and the embodiments mentioned in the application are freely combinable and interchangeable, except if the application particularly states that the embodiments or features are not interchangeable. The exemplary features described in connection with the different embodiments can be used with any other embodiment even if this were not mentioned separately.
