Description

[0001] DESCRIPTION

[0002] TITLE: AQUEOUS LUBRICANT FOR METALWORKING

[0003] TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0004] The invention relates to an aqueous lubricant intended to be used for metalworking, in particular for the deformation of metal parts, or the forming, cutting, stamping or rolling of metal parts, in particular made of aluminum or steel.

[0005] STATE OF THE ART

[0006] For metalworking, and especially for deformation operations, especially on aluminum, there are products based on formulas comprising a solvent and a fatty substance. The solvent generally serves as a vector for depositing the fatty substance useful for lubrication on the surface of the metal, the solvent evaporating during the operation.

[0007] However, these products containing non-aqueous solvents may be toxic and therefore pose a potential health risk. The presence of these non-aqueous solvents may also lead to the marketing of labeled products and the need for people using these products to wear protective equipment, including personal protective equipment, when handling the product.

[0008] In addition, these non-aqueous solvent-based products can be difficult to clean and therefore require the use of specific cleaning products that are complex to handle. There is therefore an interest in providing a lubricating composition, particularly for metalworking, which can overcome the drawbacks of the prior art and in particular limit the use of solvents, particularly toxic or potentially toxic solvents.

[0009] An objective of the present invention is to provide a lubricating composition, in particular a lubricating composition for metalworking, limiting the use of non-aqueous solvent, in particular toxic or potentially toxic solvent and thus having an improved eco-design profile.

[0010] Water-based formulations have been proposed to limit the use of organic solvent.

[0011] The water-based formulations currently on the market do not always meet the expectations of those involved in the deformation of metal parts, particularly aluminum, from a part quality point of view, since they are likely to generate staining problems during heat treatment, as heat treatment is generally carried out after the deformation of a metal part, particularly an aluminum part. Tests carried out with products intended primarily for steel may have limitations on aluminum, a softer material requiring the addition of specific additives.

[0012] Document WO 2017 / 114827 describes an aqueous formulation comprising an alkoxylated fatty alcohol and an anti-corrosion agent.

[0013] The present invention provides a lubricating composition having improved lubricating properties for the deformation of metal parts, in particular aluminum and steel, which composition generates little or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when heated, in particular up to 80°C.

Indeed, the ingredients of the lubricating composition are preferably soluble or solubilized in water. For the purposes of the present invention, a “solution” is distinguished from an emulsion or a dispersion which may contain several phases or which may contain non-solubilized particles.

[0218] According to one embodiment, the aqueous lubricating composition according to the invention is not an emulsion.

[0219] The lubricating composition according to the invention can be prepared by simply mixing the ingredients, according to any methods known to those skilled in the art to obtain a solution.

[0220] Applications

[0221] The invention also relates to the use of the lubricating composition according to the invention, as a fluid for metalworking, in particular for the deformation of metal parts and / or for the forming of metal parts and / or for the cutting of metal parts and / or for the stamping of metal parts and / or for the rolling of metal parts, the metals preferably being chosen from steel and aluminum.

[0222] It should be noted that the lubricating composition may be diluted with water before use as a metalworking fluid.

[0223] The present invention also relates to a method for lubricating at least one metal surface of a metal part, in particular aluminum or steel, comprising bringing the lubricating composition into contact with said metal surface.

[0224] Preferably, the contacting step is carried out by spraying the lubricating composition or by depositing the lubricating composition on the metal surface, the deposition being able to be carried out for example using a roller or a brush.

[0225] Preferably, the metal surface is an aluminum or steel surface.

[0226] The metal parts are preferably of low thickness, for example of thicknesses less than or equal to 5 μm, preferably less than or equal to 3 μm, more preferably a thickness ranging from 0.35 to 1.5 μm.

[0227] It should be noted that the lubrication process may comprise a step of diluting the lubricating composition with water before the step of bringing the lubricating composition (thus diluted) into contact with said metal surface.

[0228] The inventors have in fact observed that the combination of PAG, alkoxylated fatty alcohol and an acid-base anti-corrosion system makes it possible to obtain a lubricating composition having reduced or even zero VOC emissions even when heated to 80°C, said composition having excellent lubricating properties for metalworking, and in particular for metal deformation.

[0229] The lubricating composition according to the invention thus has universality in that it can be used both for the deformation of steel and for the deformation of aluminum.

[0230] According to one embodiment, the lubrication method further comprises a step of heat treatment of the metal part, after the contacting step. For example, the heat treatment may be heating to a temperature of at least 150°C, or even at least 200°C or even at least 300°C. This embodiment including a heat treatment step is particularly well suited when the metal part is an aluminum part.

[0231] The lubricating composition according to the invention can also be used to provide deformed metal parts without staining said metal part, in particular when the part is made of aluminum.

[0232] The PAG(s) used in the aforementioned use may have one or more of the characteristics and preferences described above in the context of the lubricating composition according to the invention.

[0233] The alkoxylated fatty alcohol(s) in the aforementioned use may have one or more of the characteristics and preferences described above in the context of the lubricating composition according to the invention.

[0234] The anti-corrosion system in the aforementioned use may have one or more of the characteristics and preferences described above in the context of the lubricating composition according to the invention.

[0235] The lubricating composition resulting from the aforementioned use may have one or more of the characteristics and preferences described above in the context of the lubricating composition according to the invention.

[0236] The invention also relates to the use of the lubricating composition according to the invention for improving the eco-performance of a process comprising at least one metalworking step, in which the eco-performance is chosen from: reducing the energy consumed for implementing the process, increasing the productivity of the process, improving the safety of the operators of the process, the eco-performance being in particular chosen from improving the safety of the operators of the process.

[0237] Indeed, reducing VOC emissions ultimately helps reduce energy consumption and thus contributes to reducing global warming.

[0238] Indeed, reducing staining allows for better productivity.

[0239] In addition, the use of an aqueous solvent compared to an organic solvent improves operator safety and also eliminates the need for a high-temperature drying step in an oven.

[0240] The metalworking step may comprise deforming metal parts and / or forming metal parts and / or cutting metal parts and / or stamping metal parts and / or rolling metal parts, the metals preferably being selected from steel and aluminum.

[0241] In other words, the lubricating composition according to the invention makes it possible to reduce the environmental impact of a process comprising at least one metalworking step.

[0249] Example 1: Measurement of VOC emissions

[0250] In this example, a lubricating composition according to the invention was compared to two organic solvent-based lubricating compositions used for the deformation of metal parts.

[0251] Table 1 gives details of the compositions tested; the percentages are percentages by weight relative to the total weight of the composition. [Table 1]

[0252] The tests were carried out in accordance with standard EN NF 12619, by weighing 3g of product, and testing two temperatures: 30°C and 80°C.

[0253] Total VOC emissions, converted to ppm, are shown in Table 2 for the three compositions tested and for the two temperatures tested.

[0254] [Table 2]

[0255] The results in this table 2 show that the lubricating composition according to the invention has zero VOC emissions, even at 80°C.

[0256] Example 2: Staining tests on aluminum plates

[0257] In this example, staining tests were set up to determine the staining power of the lubricating composition on an aluminum part.

[0258] Table 3 shows the details of the lubricant compositions tested in this example. [Table 3]

[0259] Staining is assessed by spraying the lubricating composition onto an aluminum plate and placing the plate in an oven heated to 350°C and holding the plate at 350°C for 10 minutes. The level of staining is assessed by assigning a score from 0 (not stained) to 5 (very stained).

[0260] The Cl 1 composition described in Table 1 and the compositions in Table 3 were evaluated and the results are shown in Table 4.

[0261] [Table 4]

[0262] As shown by the results in Table 4, the compositions of the invention are less staining than composition CC3. In addition, compositions C11, C12 and C14 comprising a monoacid are less staining than composition C13 free of monoacid.

[0263] In addition, the CI4 composition has demonstrated a reduction in residues and therefore sticking problems that can occur with the devices for transporting metal parts at the end of the metalworking process of said parts.
