Description

[0001] ANIMAL PROTECTION DEVICE

[0002] The invention relates to a protective device for animals, in particular dogs. The protective device comprises a hood with a head part formed by a mesh fabric, wherein the head part has an edge region defining a neck opening. The hood is configured to receive the animal's head through the neck opening, and the head part completely encloses the animal's head on all sides within the hood when the hood is worn around the animal's head.

[0003] It is a well-known problem among pet owners, especially dog owners, that foreign objects can penetrate the ears, eyes, or nose of their animals and become lodged there. In addition to insects, weed seeds in particular pose a danger to animals because they have barbs, such as the grass seeds often referred to as "foxtail." These barbs cause the seeds to lodge in the animal's ear canals, nostrils, and eyes, for example. Attempts by the animal to shake off or expel the seeds usually only result in the barbs burrowing deeper into the animal, causing corresponding pain. If seeds are not removed in time, this frequently leads to long-lasting infections. Seeds often penetrate so deeply that they can only be removed by a veterinarian under anesthesia. On the one hand, this causes considerable stress and pain for the animal and, on the other hand, it involves high costs for the owner.

[0004] To solve this problem, a number of products already exist which are aimed specifically at protecting the head of the animal in question, which is particularly vulnerable due to the body openings there (mouth, ears, nose, eyes). For example, US 8,833,311 B2 discloses a hood which encloses the entire head of the animal. The hood described therein has an edge region defining a neck opening, with an elastic band or cord incorporated into the edge region. The band or cord can be tightened using a fastening mechanism or a simple loop, thus fixing the hood to the animal's neck. This device is particularly disadvantageous in that it offers only limited adjustment options with regard to the neck opening, i.e. the diameter of the neck opening can only be reduced slightly compared to the open state using the band or cord.Accordingly, the size of the hood itself must already be relatively well adapted to the animal's head size and neck diameter. However, fitting the hood with a relatively narrow neck opening—relative to the animal's head size—is difficult and negatively impacts the animal's acceptance of having the hood put on and wearing it.

[0005] The present invention is therefore based on the object of designing and developing a protective device of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that improved handling and greater adaptability to different head sizes and neck diameters of the animals is achieved using structurally simple means.

[0006] According to the invention, the above object is achieved by the features of claim 1. According to this, the protective device in question is characterized in that the head part outside the hood in the region of the neck opening has a fastening device for adapting the diameter of the neck opening to the neck of the animal with at least two closure parts that can be fixed to or together, wherein the closure parts are designed and arranged on the head part in such a way that the mesh fabric of the head part forms at least one fold when the two closure parts are fixed to or together.

[0007] According to the invention, it was first recognized that the underlying problem can be solved in an astonishingly simple way by forming a fastening device on the hood which, when closed, forces the mesh fabric into one or more folds, whereby the effective diameter of the neck opening can be significantly reduced. According to the invention, the fastening device for this purpose is arranged in an outer region of the hood and has at least two closure parts that can be fixed to or with one another. A fold is to be understood here in particular as an overlap of material of the mesh fabric. Thus, by fixing the closure parts to or with one another, the mesh fabric can experience pleating, in which the mesh fabric assumes, for example, a Z-shaped material layer.Due to the inventive possibility of significantly reducing the effective diameter of the neck opening, the hood itself can be manufactured with a comparatively large neck opening—considering the head size of the respective animal. Accordingly, fitting the hood around the animal's head is significantly simplified, and the animal's acceptance of wearing the hood is significantly improved.

[0008] To ensure particularly reliable fastening of the hood to the animal's head, at least one of the fastening parts can be designed in the form of a band, belt or strap.

[0009] Advantageously, the fastening of the fastening parts to or with one another can be carried out by means of a hook and loop fastener. The hook and loop fastener could be formed over a certain length or even over the entire length of the fastening part, so that the effective diameter of the neck opening can be continuously adjusted over a wide range and thus adaptable to different animals with different neck diameters. In general, the more tightly the fastening parts are fastened to or with one another - i.e. the more the fastening parts overlap, e.g. in the case of a hook and loop fastener - the larger the fold(s) that form in the mesh fabric and the smaller the effective diameter becomes due to the larger material overlap.

[0010] According to a further embodiment, the closure parts can also be covered with magnetic strips, for example, which would also allow for continuous adjustment. Alternatively, the fastening can be achieved using snap fasteners, whereby at least one of the closure parts could be equipped with snap fasteners arranged at a distance from one another along its length. Furthermore, it is conceivable that the fastening parts could be fastened to or to one another, for example, using a (clamp) buckle or a snap fastener. A fastening in which the closure parts are designed like a belt buckle is also conceivable.

[0011] According to an advantageous embodiment, at least one of the closure parts can be designed to be length-adjustable. This provides a mechanism (possibly additional, depending on the fixing means) by which the hood can be particularly easily adapted to different animals with different neck diameters. Again, the shorter the length(s) of the closure parts fixed to or together is / are set, the larger the fold(s) forming in the mesh fabric will be and the smaller the effective diameter will be due to the larger material overlap. The length can be adjusted using a regulator arranged on the respective closure part. Depending on the design of the closure part, the regulator can be designed, for example, as a webbing slider, ladder buckle, bar buckle, or the like.

[0012] With regard to an efficient arrangement of the fastening parts on the outside of the hood, it can be provided that a first of the at least two fastening parts is firmly integrated into the edge region of the head part. This can in particular be, for example, a hook and loop fastener strip that runs along the edge region and is, for example, glued to the edge region or sewn into it. In this embodiment, the second fastening part can be designed as a hook and loop fastener tape, belt or strap, which is firmly connected to the head part with at least one end section spaced apart from the first fastening part. Via its other free end, the second fastening part can be fixed to the first fastening part - creating a fold in the mesh fabric - in a corresponding position through which the desired effective diameter of the neck opening is achieved.Depending on the configuration, the second closure part, like the first closure part, can also be fully integrated into the edge area of the head part, e.g., in the form of a hook-and-loop fastener. Instead of a hook-and-loop fastener, other types of connection can also be implemented, with a design in particular being conceivable in which the first closure part is designed as a snap fastener integrated into the edge area of the head part, and in which corresponding counterparts (bases) are integrated into the second closure part. To allow for different adjustment options, several such counterparts can be provided, arranged at a distance from one another along the length of the second closure part.

[0013] Within the scope of the design with a first closure part firmly integrated into the edge area of the head part, a symmetrical design can advantageously be realized with regard to a secure fit of the hood around the animal's head. For this purpose, it is provided, on the one hand, that the first closure part is integrated into the head part on a central axis of the hood (where the central axis is defined by the animal's torso when the hood is worn around the animal's head). Secondly, it is provided that the head part has a third closure part that can be fixed to or with the first closure part, which, just like the second closure part described above, is designed as a band, strap or belt.To achieve a symmetrical and therefore particularly secure fastening, the second closure part is positioned with one end to the left of the central axis, offset from the first closure part on the head part, and the third closure part is positioned at the same distance to the right of the central axis. The second and third closure parts can be attached to the first closure part via the respective free ends – coming from the left and right, respectively, each time creating a fold in the mesh fabric.

[0014] According to an alternative embodiment, the head part can comprise two fastening parts designed as a band, belt or strap, which are designed to be directly fastened to or with one another. One end of one of the fastening parts can be firmly connected to the head part to the left and one end of the other of the fastening parts to the right of a central axis of the hood, preferably symmetrically to the central axis, with the two fastening parts being fastened to or with one another via their respective free ends. Because this embodiment does not require a fastening part permanently integrated into the edge area of the head part, the fastening is decoupled from the edge area. This means that the fastening of the fastening parts does not necessarily have to be at the level of the edge area, but can be moved to a certain extent - as needed - forwards towards the animal's head or backwards towards the animal's torso. This advantageously provides another adjustment option. To ensure the hood is as comfortable to use as possible, the fastening device can be arranged in an upper section of the edge area of the headpiece that defines the neck opening, so that when the hood is worn around the animal's head, the fastening device is positioned in the neck area of the animal. This positioning provides particularly easy accessibility.

[0015] To ensure a particularly secure and comfortable fit for the animal, the hood can be provided with elastically gathered edges on the side opposite the fastening device. If, as described above, the fastening device is located in an upper section of the edge of the head section defining the neck opening in the neck area of the animal for easy handling, the gathered area would be arranged in a lower section in the neck area of the animal. Elastic gathering of the mesh fabric could be achieved, for example, by means of an elastic band integrated into the edge area.

[0016] According to a further preferred embodiment, the headpiece can be made from a single piece of mesh fabric, so that the headpiece has only one seam. This seam could be positioned on the headpiece so that, when the hood is worn around the animal's head, it is located on the underside of the hood in the neck area of the animal. This ensures that only mesh fabric is visible in the animal's field of vision, thus preventing the animal's vision from being obstructed by obtrusive seams.

[0017] In order to further increase the comfort and acceptance of the hood, the mesh fabric can be replaced with a transparent non-woven material in an area on the top side of the hood, which is in the animal's face when the hood is worn around the animal's head. This significantly improves the animal's visibility. Due to the secure and stable fit of the hood on the animal's head achieved by the special fastening device, it is possible, within the scope of an advantageous embodiment, for the head part to be designed in such a way that it has a base part and a front part, wherein the front part is removably attached to the base part. The front section can be detached from the base section not only when the hood is not being worn, but – due to the secure fixation of the hood in the animal's neck area – especially when the hood is being worn, without the hood slipping and thus hindering the animal. This design, which provides structural stability across the entire object, allows the front section (front part) to be removed while the rear section (base part) can continue to be worn. This allows the rear section to continue to serve as partial protection for the animal's eyes and ears, while the animal can eat or consume liquids with the front section removed.

[0018] A detachable connection between the base and front sections could be achieved using a zipper (vertical when the hood is worn) or a hook-and-loop fastener. Snap fasteners, snap fasteners, magnetic closures (e.g., with a snap fastener), or similar fasteners are also conceivable. A removable front section offers the great advantage of allowing the animal to quickly consume liquids and / or food without having to remove the entire hood from the animal's head.

[0019] Instead of a removable front part, a lower part can be provided according to a further advantageous embodiment. Here, too, a zipper is advantageously used for the detachable connection. In a specific embodiment, this zipper (which runs essentially horizontally when the hood is worn) could be positioned between the fastening device provided in an upper section of the edge region of the head part and an elastic band provided, as described above, in a lower section of the edge region. A removable and thus replaceable lower part results in better modulation options for the hood and thus improved adaptation to different head shapes thanks to different sizes of the lower part. A further advantage is easier cleaning and simple replacement in the event of damage. In addition, the lower part can be designed in such a way that, due to its shape and / or material properties, it acts as a stabilizing element of the hood.

[0020] In order to ensure a high level of safety provided by the hood and in particular to prevent the animal from slipping off the hood or accidentally losing the hood, the head part may have a number of tabs attached to the edge region of the head part, which tabs are designed to attach the hood to a collar of the animal when the hood is worn around the animal's head.

[0021] The object stated at the outset is further achieved according to the invention by a protective device having the features of claim 15. According to this, the protective device in question is characterized in that the head part outside the hood in the region of the neck opening has a fastening device for adapting the diameter of the neck opening to the neck of the animal, with two fastening parts, each designed as a band, belt or strap, which can be fixed to or with one another, wherein the fastening parts are each fastened by one end in the edge region on the outside of the head part, wherein the respective fastening points of the two fastening parts on the head part are spaced from one another along the edge region of the head part, such that the mesh fabric is forced into at least one fold with a material overlap of the mesh fabric when the two fastening parts are fixed to or with one another. The protective device defined in this way can be combined with the embodiments described above and below.

[0022] The way this protective device works is similar to that described above. The design and arrangement of the two fastening parts means that when the fastening parts are fixed together or together, the distance between the attachment points of the two fastening parts is shortened along the edge area, which forces a folding of the mesh fabric. In general, the more the distance between the attachment points of the two fastening parts is reduced when the two fastening parts are fixed together or together, the larger the fold(s) that form in the mesh fabric and the smaller the effective diameter of the neck opening of the hood becomes due to the larger material overlap. Depending on the design of the fastening parts, this can be achieved either by changing or adjusting the extent to which the two fastening parts overlap when fixing (e.g.in the case of a hook and loop connection) or by changing or adjusting the (absolute) length(s) of the fastening parts. According to one embodiment, the fastening parts are designed and arranged in such a way that when the fastening parts are fixed to or with one another, a total of two folds form in the mesh fabric. The two folds can form essentially symmetrically to one another to the left and right of an axis running centrally between the fastening points of the fastening parts on the head part. The specific type of fold formation can be influenced by a corresponding design of the mesh fabric in the edge area between the fastening points of the two fastening parts, e.g. by means of reinforcements in certain areas that make folding in this area more difficult or impossible.

[0023] There are now various possibilities for advantageously embodying and developing the teaching of the present invention. For this purpose, reference is made, on the one hand, to the claims subordinate to claim 1 and, on the other hand, to the following explanation of preferred embodiments of the invention with reference to the drawing. In conjunction with the explanation of the preferred embodiments of the invention with reference to the drawing, generally preferred embodiments and developments of the teaching are also explained. [0029] Fig. 7 shows a plan view of a cutting pattern for producing the protective device according to Figs. 1-3.

[0030] Figures 1 to 7 illustrate exemplary embodiments of a protective device according to the invention. To improve clarity, not all elements are provided with a reference numeral in all figures. The protective device according to the invention comprises a hood 1 with a head part 2 formed by a mesh fabric, wherein the head part 2 has an edge region 4 defining a neck opening 3. The hood 1 is configured such that it receives the animal's head through the neck opening 3 and the head part 2 completely encloses the animal's head on all sides within the hood 1 when the hood 1 is worn around the animal's head. The hood 1 effectively protects the animal's mouth, eyes, ears, and nose from the penetration of foreign bodies, in particular grass seeds, such as the barbed seeds of fox grass, but also from insects.

[0031] The hood 1 is made of a mesh fabric which ensures good air circulation for the animal wearing the hood 1 and is also easy to see through, so that the animal's view is not significantly restricted. In addition, the mesh fabric is selected so that the material is sufficiently rigid to protrude from the animal's face without additional stiffening ribs or similar, thus preventing facial irritation. Textile fabrics made of PVC fibers, such as the Batyline® fabric well-known from the garden furniture sector, can be used as a material for the mesh fabric. Other materials with similar properties can also be used. If required, the fabric can also have an antibacterial coating and / or UV protection. In addition, the material should be free from harmful substances.

[0032] The neck opening 3 and the fastening device 5 provided according to the invention for adapting the diameter of the neck opening 3 to the neck of the animal can be seen particularly clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 2 shows the hood 1 in an open state, while Fig. 3 shows the hood 1 in a closed state.

[0033] As can be seen in the upper area of the neck opening 3 in Figs. 2 and 3 (which is located in the neck area of the animal when the hood 1 is worn), the fastening device 5 comprises two fastening parts 6a, 6b that can be fixed to or together. The fastening parts 6a, 6b are designed and arranged on the head part 2 in such a way that the mesh fabric of the head part 2 is forced into a fold 7a, 7b when the two fastening parts 6a, 6b are fixed to or together.

[0034] In the specific embodiment shown, the closure parts 6a, 6b are designed as hook-and-loop fastener strips 8a, 8b that can be fixed to one another. Other types of fastening, e.g. in the form of snap fasteners or magnetic strips, are also conceivable. The closure parts 6a, 6b are each firmly connected to the head part 2 at one end in the edge region 4 of the head part 2. For example, the closure parts 6a, 6b can be sewn to the head part 2 in the edge region 4. It is important in this respect that the closure parts 6a, 6b are arranged in the outer region of the hood 1 and engage the hood 1 at a distance from one another. In the illustrated embodiment, a symmetrical arrangement is shown, in which the two closure parts 6a, 6b are arranged on the hood 1 to the left and right of the central axis M (defined by the animal's torso) at essentially the same distance from the central axis M of the hood 1.

[0035] As can be seen in Fig. 2, the edge area 4 in the upper section between the engagement points or fastening points of the closure parts 6a, 6b has a certain length. This length is dimensioned such that the neck opening 3 is large enough to comfortably pull the hood 1 over the animal's head. The hood 1 is guided over the animal's head with the neck opening 3, starting at the animal's nose and then progressing over the ears, so that the fastening device 5 finally rests behind the ears in the neck area of the animal.

[0036] As can be seen in Fig. 3, the closure parts 6a, 6b are moved in the direction of the central axis M to securely fasten the hood 1 to the animal's head and are fixed to one another in the region of the central axis M. Due to the special arrangement of the closure parts 6a, 6b on the head part 2, the material of the head part 2 is thereby folded into folds 7a, 7b in accordance with the invention, whereby the neck opening 3 can be reduced over an extremely wide area. Depending on the relative positioning of the two closure parts 6a, 6b in the fixed state, folds 7a, 7b of different sizes and, accordingly, neck openings 3 of different sizes result. The protective device according to the invention thus enables the hood 1 to be effectively adapted to different neck sizes of the animals. As a result, one and the same hood can be worn safely by different animals with essentially the same or similar head size, but significantly different neck diameters.

[0037] In some embodiments, the hood 1 is essentially made from a single piece of fabric. In the hood 1 shown in Figs. 1-4, however, the head part comprises a base part 9 and a front part 10, the front part 10 being removably attached to the base part 9. In the embodiment shown, the two parts 9, 10 are detachably connected to one another via a vertically circumferential zipper 11. There is a small gap between the start and end of the zipper 11. This gap can be closed by means of a piece of material (e.g. the mesh fabric from which the head part 2 is made as a whole, or another material) which is sewn into the corresponding place on the inside of the hood 1 in order to prevent foreign bodies from penetrating through the gap.

[0038] In principle, the removable front part 10 offers the advantage of allowing the animal to eat and / or ingest thicker liquids spontaneously and without great effort—water intake is generally possible even through the mesh fabric of the hood—without first having to remove the entire hood from the animal's head. This advantage also contributes to improving the animal's acceptance of wearing the hood.

[0039] Fig. 5 shows an embodiment with an alternative design of the connection between base part 9 and front part 10. According to this embodiment, a vertically circumferential hook and loop fastener 12 is used instead of a zipper for the detachable connection between the two parts 9, 10. In this case, the fastening element arranged on the base part 9 could have hook and loop fasteners on its outer side, while the corresponding hooks are formed on an inner side of the fastening element arranged on the front part 10. It should be noted that the shape of the hood, in particular that of the base part 9 of the head part 2, is only shown schematically in Fig. 5. In principle, the hood can have the same or a similar shape as described in connection with Figs. 1-4. The same applies to the fastening device 5, which is also only indicated schematically in Fig. 5.

[0040] In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, additional security is provided in that the closure element arranged on the front part 10 has Velcro fasteners on its outer side and in that a longer tab 13 with hooks is additionally arranged on the base part 9. For additional security of the front part 10, this tab 13 is designed to be guided from the inside to the outside through an opening 14 formed in the front part 10, then to be guided around the front part 10, and finally to be fixed to the closure element of the base part 9. Fig. 6 shows an alternative embodiment of the fastening device 5, wherein, for reasons of clarity, not the entire hood is shown, but only the edge region 4 of the head part 2.Irrespective of the alternative type of fixation of the closure parts 6a, 6b, the mode of operation, in particular with regard to the adaptation of the effective diameter of the neck opening by forming corresponding folds in the mesh fabric, is essentially identical to the mode of operation described in connection with Figs. 1-4.

[0041] Instead of the Velcro strips used in the embodiment according to Figs. 1-4, the hood according to Fig. 6 comprises closure parts 6a, 6b, which are designed as length-adjustable bands, straps, or belts 15a, 15b. The closure parts 6a, 6b are secured via a clip fastener 16. Depending on the specific design of the closure parts 6a, 6b, the length is adjusted using a regulator 17 in the form of a webbing slider, a ladder buckle, a bar buckle, or the like. It is conceivable that the regulator 17 for length adjustment is integrated into the clip fastener 16.

[0042] As can be clearly seen in Fig. 6, the edge region 4 of the head part 2 defining the neck opening 3 is designed in two parts. In a section of the edge region 4 shown at the top in Fig. 6 between the points of engagement or fastening points of the closure parts 6a, 6b, a pleat formation of the mesh fabric takes place when the fastening device 5 is closed in the manner according to the invention, whereby the edge region 4 is forced, for example, into a substantially Z-shaped course. In a section of the edge region 4 shown at the bottom in Fig. 6 outside the points of engagement or fastening points of the closure parts 6a, 6b, an elastic element, for example a rubber band, is integrated into the edge region 4. This causes an elastic gathering of the mesh fabric in this area, which positively influences the wearing comfort for the animal and also ensures that the hood 1 fits securely.

[0043] Fig. 7 finally shows a pattern for a hood 1 according to Figs. 1-4 with a removable front part 10. According to this, both the base part 9 and the front part are each made from a single piece of mesh fabric, although it should be noted that it is fundamentally also possible to produce the hood 1, in particular the base part 9, from a plurality of individual material sections. However, producing the base part 9 from a single piece according to the pattern shown in Fig. 7 offers the advantage that the base part 9 only has a single seam 20, namely where the two end sections 19a, 19b are sewn together. In the construction shown, this seam 20 advantageously runs on the underside of the hood 1 and thus outside the animal's field of vision, as can be seen in Fig. 3.

[0044] The hood 1 is essentially shaped by suitable processing of the mesh fabric in the edge region 4. In some embodiments, this processing comprises a first specific processing of the edge region 4 in an upper section of the neck opening 3 between the attachment points of the closure parts 6a, 6b of the fastening device 5 and a second specific processing of the edge region 4 in a lower section of the neck opening 3 outside the attachment points of the closure parts 6a, 6b of the fastening device 5. In the cutting pattern according to Fig. 7, the positioning of the attachment points of the closure parts 6a, 6b is indicated by the dashed lines. Accordingly, the edge region 4 is divided into the upper section 4' and the lower section 4". In the exemplary embodiments shown, the processing in the upper edge section 4' comprises the two triangular folds 21a, 21b towards the central axis M, which are particularly visible in Fig.2. The processing in the lower edge section 4" includes the incorporation of an elastic element, e.g., a rubber band, which creates the elastic gathering described above.

[0045] Although the protective device has been described in the present disclosure with the primary purpose of protecting the animal's head from the penetration of foreign bodies, particularly grass seeds, it is understood that the protective device can simultaneously serve other purposes. For example, the hood can also be used to prevent an animal from licking and thus irritating a wound, or to prevent an animal from ingesting potentially harmful substances, such as feces or poisonous plants, or from coming into direct contact with them while sniffing them.

[0046] With regard to further advantageous embodiments of the device according to the invention, reference is made to the general part of the description and to the appended claims in order to avoid repetition.

[0047] Finally, it should be expressly pointed out that the embodiments of the device according to the invention described above serve only to explain the claimed teaching, but do not limit it to the embodiments.
