AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional spools require stretch wrap applicators to retain the finish end of wound media, increasing complexity, cost, and reducing efficiency, while manual and automated tie-off holes are inconvenient and time-consuming.

Method used

A spool with a flange featuring a tie-off feature, such as a deflecting tab or flexible membrane, that allows for secure retention of the media finish end without the need for stretch wrap, simplifying the winding process and enhancing efficiency.

Benefits of technology

The spool design reduces the complexity and cost of winding equipment, increases process speed, and eliminates the need for stretch wrap disposal, making it convenient for manual and automated operations.

Abstract

A spool (20), spooling system and associated method for winding media onto a spool (20) includes a flange (22) provided with a tie-off feature (30) for retaining a finish end of the media on the spool (20). The spool (20) includes a barrel (25) and at least one flange (22) extending outwardly from the barrel (25). The tie-off feature (30) includes a receiving portion (32) for receiving the finish end of the media and a retaining portion (34) for retaining the finish end of the media within the tie-off feature (30). The tie-off feature (30) may be in the form of a deflecting tab or a flexible membrane. The spooling system includes a feed arm for feeding the media to the spool (20) and a drive unit for rotating the spool (20) to wind the media onto the spool (20). The method includes winding the media onto the spool (20) and retaining the finish end of the media within the tie-off feature (30) provided on the flange (22).
