Description

[0001] A MARITIME EVACUATION SYSTEM

[0002] The present disclosure relates to a maritime evacuation system to be installed on a maritime structure, comprising an inflatable, floatable unit configured to be deployed from the maritime structure, the inflatable, floatable unit having a longitudinal extension, and a first bowsing system configured to positioning and maintaining an intended position of the inflatable, floatable unit in relation to the maritime structure during evacuation of persons at sea, first bowsing system comprising a first bowsing line extending from the maritime structure to a joint, a second bowsing line having a first end and a second end, the first end and the second end being connected with the inflatable, floatable unit at a first attachment point and at a second attachment point, respectively, the first attachment point is arranged at a distance from the second attachment point in the longitudinal extension.

[0003] Inflatable, floatable units, such as liferafts or platforms are often used in the evacuation of the passengers or crew members from a maritime structure, such as a vessel.

[0004] During evacuation, a container housing the non-inflated floatable unit may be deployed into the water, whereinafter it will start to inflate. During this process both the inflated, floatable unit as well as the non-inflated, floatable unit will be connected to the vessel via bowsing lines. After having been inflated, the floatable unit will be positioned and bowsed to the vessel, which often takes time due to the stressed situation as well as heavy weather conditions.

[0005] However, heeling movements as well as the movements which are caused by the loads such as wind, current or waves, exerted on the vessel, render that the position as well as the movements of the vessel change all the time. Furthermore, due to the fact that the floatable unit is smaller in size than the vessel, the floatable unit moves more rapidly than the vessel.

[0006] These movements of the vessel, as well as of the inflatable, floatable unit causes the difficulties of entering the floatable unit from the vessel, as the distance, both in height, in the transverse as well as in the longitudinal direction between the vessel and the floatable unit varies constantly, whereby it is almost impossible to hold the floatable unit in a secure and fixed position in relation to the vessel.

[0007] Often the evacuation of persons from the vessel takes place during heavy weather, which furthermore influences as well as exerts great forces and loads on the vessel and the inflatable, floatable unit.

[0008] Thus, several resources, i.e. persons, are dedicated to handle and bowse the inflatable, floatable unit to the vessel.

[0009] The above-mentioned drawbacks and disadvantages are primarily explained in connection with the vertical distance. However, similar drawbacks and disadvantages occur in relation to the transverse and longitudinal distances between the evacuation point of the vessel and the floatable unit.

[0010] In addition, since the forces and loads exerted on the bowsing today are considerable and will be even higher in the future, especially in high seas and under heavy weather conditions, it is difficult to control the bowsing of the known evacuation systems. Also, if the vessel and the inflatable, floatable units are moving at different speeds, the bowsing system shall be configured to control the inflatable, floatable units independently and together. However, during this control of the inflatable, floatable units, a certain "braking distance" is necessary, otherwise the inertia of the system will peak the forces, which may damage the bowsing line and / or the inflatable, floatable units.

[0011] Examples of maritime evacuation systems are given in EP3112247A1, WO95 / 35233A1 and EP2772425.

[0012] It is an object of the present disclosure to wholly or partly overcome the above disadvantages and drawbacks of the prior art. More specifically, it is an object to provide an improved maritime evacuation system having a minimum of handling during evacuation.

[0044] All the figures are highly schematic and not necessarily to scale, and they show only those parts which are necessary in order to elucidate the disclosure, other parts being omitted or merely suggested.

[0045] Fig. 1 shows an example of the present disclosure in a side view. In Fig. 1, a maritime evacuation system 1 to be installed on a maritime structure 2 is shown. The maritime evacuation system 1 comprising an inflatable, floatable unit 3 configured to be deployed from the maritime structure 2, the inflatable floatable unit having a longitudinal extension e. In the example in Fig. 1, the inflatable, floatable unit 3 is deployed into the water w. A sequence of deployment will be described further below. In the present disclosure the inflatable, floatable unit is an inflatable liferaft.

[0046] The maritime evacuation system 1 also comprises a first bowsing system 4 configured to positioning and maintaining an intended position of the inflatable, floatable unit 3 in relation to the maritime structure 2 during evacuation of persons at sea.

[0047] The first bowsing system 4 comprising a first bowsing line 5 extending from the maritime structure 2 to a joint 6, and a second bowsing line 7 having a first end 8 and a second end 9, the first end 8 and the second end 9 being connected with the inflatable floatable unit 3 at a first attachment point 10 and at a second attachment point 11, respectively, the first attachment point 10 is arranged at a distance from the second attachment point 11 in the longitudinal extension e of the inflatable, floatable unit. In addition, the second bowsing line 7 extends from the first attachment point 10 via the joint 6 to the second attachment point 11. In this example, the second bowsing line has the shape of an inverted V in the intended position of the inflatable, floatable unit 3. The second bowsing line 7 is freely movable in the joint 6. Since the second bowsing line 7 is freely movable in the joint 6, the inflatable, floatable unit 3 can be moved in the longitudinal extension e due to external circumstances such as wind, waves, current but also in relation to movements of the maritime structure. By the maritime evacuation system 1, the cumbersome handling of the bowsing procedure is limited during the entire evacuation.

[0048] The maritime evacuation system 1 may be used in relation to different height h between a deck 12 of the maritime structure 2 and the water level w. For instance, when the height is below 12 meters additional bowsing turning points on the maritime structure 2 may be avoided. If the height h is higher than 12 meters it may necessary to have additional bowsing turning points on the maritime structure 2 and / or split tubes.

[0049] The maritime evacuation system 1 may also comprise an evacuation station 13 arranged on the maritime structure 2.

[0050] In addition, the second bowsing line 7 partly or fully comprises an elastic material. Hereby the second bowsing line 7 provides the bowsing dynamic in varying wind, current and wave conditions without the need for additional handling of the bowsing system by the crew.

[0051] In an example, a first spring element is arranged between the first end 8 of the second bowsing line 7 and the first attachment point 10 and a second spring element is arranged between the second end 9 of the second bowsing line 7 and the second attachment point 11. Hereby, the spring elements and the second bowsing line 7 provide dynamic bowsing in varying wind, current and wave conditions without the need for additional handling of the bowsing system by the crew.

[0052] By arranging elasticity and / or spring elements in or in connection with the second bowsing line 7 it is ensured that the inflatable, floatable unit is repositioned after movement of the same and thereby moved and maintained to the intended position.

[0053] Furthermore, the elastic material may at least be arranged near the first end and the second end of the second bowsing line. Hereby the second bowsing line 7 may both have elasticity and strength. Moreover, the elastic material may be formed as an elastic robe. A plurality of elastic robes may be arranged adjacent to each other, or mutual twisted together, or a combination thereof.

[0054] Additionally, the elastic material and / or spring elements may be configured to be extended during movements of the inflatable, floatable unit 3 so that a restoring force is provided in the elastic material and / or in the spring element, whereby the elastic material or spring element will restore the inflatable, floatable unit 3 to its intended equilibrium position after it has been moved due to varying wind, current and wave conditions, and / or Stokes drift.

[0055] Furthermore, the spring elements may each comprise an expansion spring or one or more elastic robe(s), or a combination thereof.

[0056] In addition, the joint 6 may comprise a thimble, a block, a pulley or similar for facilitating that the second bowsing line 7 can move freely in the joint 6.

[0057] As shown in Fig. 1, the inflatable, floatable unit 3 in an evacuation circumstance may be positioned in a lower position in relation to the joint 6.

[0058] In Figs. 2 and 3, another example of the present disclosure is shown. Fig. 2 shows the maritime evacuation system 1 seen from the water side, and Fig. 3 shows the maritime evacuation system 1 from the side of the maritime structure 2.

[0059] In the same manner as Fig. 1, the maritime evacuation system 1 comprises a first bowsing system 4. The first bowsing system 4 comprising a first bowsing line 5 extending from the maritime structure 2 to a joint 6, and a second bowsing line 7 having a first end 8 and a second end 9, the first end 8 and the second end 9 being connected with the inflatable, floatable unit 3 at a first attachment point 10 and at a second attachment point 11, respectively, the first attachment point 10 is arranged at a distance from the second attachment point 11 in the longitudinal extension e of the inflatable, floatable unit. The maritime evacuation system 1 may also comprise a second bowsing system 4' arranged at predetermined distance from the first bowsing system 4. The second bowsing system 4' is in this example identical to the first bowsing system 4.

[0060] The second bowsing system 4' comprising a first bowsing line 5' extending from the maritime structure 2 to a joint 6', and a second bowsing line 7' having a first end 8' and a second end 9', the first end 8' and the second end 9' being connected with the inflatable floatable unit 3 at a first attachment point 10' and at a second attachment point 11', respectively, the first attachment point 10' is arranged at a distance from the second attachment point 11' in the longitudinal extension of the inflatable, floatable unit 3. In addition, the second bowsing line 7' extends from the first attachment point 10' via the joint 6' to the second attachment point 11'. In this example, the second bowsing line 7' has the shape of an inverted V in the intended position of the inflatable, floatable unit 3. The second bowsing line 7' is freely movable in the joint 6'.

[0061] In addition, the second bowsing line 7, 7' is securely connected with the inflatable, floatable unit 3 at the attachment points 10, 11, 10', 11' of the inflatable, floatable unit 3.

[0062] In addition, by implementing the first bowsing system 4 and the second bowsing system 4' the risk for the inflatable, floatable unit 3 may rotate in the water is minimised. Hereby, it is ensured that the intended side of the inflatable, floatable unit 3 is facing the side of the maritime structure so that persons may enter the inflatable, floatable unit 3.

[0063] In Figs. 2 and 3, an evacuation chute 14 is arranged between the maritime structure 2 and the inflatable, floatable unit 3 in the deployed position, the evacuation chute 14 is configured to embark people from the maritime structure 2 to the inflatable, floatable unit 3 during evacuation. The evacuation chute 14 may comprise a helically path. In another example, a slide may be arranged between the maritime structure 2 and the inflatable, floatable unit 3 in the deployed position. As mentioned above, the maritime evacuation system 1 may comprise an evacuation station 13 configured to be arranged on the maritime structure.

[0064] In Fig. 4, an example of the maritime evacuation system 1 is shown. The maritime evacuation system 1 comprises, in the same manner as in Figs. 2 and 3, an inflatable, floatable unit 3 and a first bowsing system 4 and a second bowsing system 4' arranged adjacent to each other. The first bowsing system 4 and the second bowsing system 4' comprises the same features as described above.

[0065] The evacuation station 12 may comprise a storage unit 15, the storage unit 15 is configured to store the deflated inflatable, floating unit and the bowsing systems 4, 4' on-board the maritime structure 2. In the present example, the storage unit 15 is arranged on the deck 12 of the maritime structure 2. The storage unit 15 may also be configured to store the chute 14 or slide when not deployed.

[0066] Furthermore, the storage unit 15 may also comprise a deployment arrangement 16.

[0067] In Fig. 5, an example of the maritime evacuation system 1 is shown.

[0068] In this example, the height between the deck 12 of the maritime structure 2 and the water level w is large compared to the previous examples. Hence, split-tubes 17 may be arranged on a side 18 of the maritime structure 2 for guiding the first bowsing lines 5, 5'. Turning points may also be arranged on the side of the maritime structure 2 for guiding the bowsing lines.

[0069] Furthermore, the evacuation station 13 is configured to function as an entrance point for the evacuation into the inflatable, floatable unit 3 through the chute 14.

[0070] The maritime evacuation system may also comprise a winch 21 being arranged in connection with the first bowing line at the evacuation station.

[0071] Moreover, the evacuation station may also comprise a line dispensing device 20 as shown in Fig. 6. The line dispensing device 20 is configured to level out pull on the first bowsing lines 5, 5' by supplying additional line length between the line dispensing device 20 and the joint 6. The line dispensing device 20 is arranged between the winch 21 and the joint 6. The line dispensing device 20 comprises a plurality of first device turning points 22 and a plurality of second device turning points 23, the first device turning points

[0072] 22 being arranged opposite the second device turning points 23. In the example four first device turning points 22 are present and three second device turning points 23.

[0073] The first device turning points 22 are connected with a frame 24, and the second device turning points 23 are connected with a tensioning unit 25. The tensioning unit 25 comprises a number of springs 26. In the present example, five springs 26 are provided. In other examples another number of springs may be arranged. The springs 26 may be expansion springs. In addition, the tensioning unit 25 is moveable in a vertical direction compared to the first device turning points 22.

[0074] During operation of the line dispensing device 20, the second device turning points

[0075] 23 are being pulled up by the springs 26 in the relaxed state of the line dispensing device 20. Hereby, a length of the first bowsing line 5, 5' which is guided from the winch 21 via the first device turning points 22 and second device turning points 23 to additional frame turning points 27 towards the joint, is kept in the line dispensing device 20. The distance between the first device turning points 22 and second device turning points 23 is large in the relaxed state of the line dispensing device 20. In the circumstance a large pull in the bowsing lines occur the springs 26 will be expanded and the distance between the first device turning points 22 and the second device turning points 23 will be minimised. Accordingly, additional length of the first bowsing line 5 will be pulled out of the line dispensing device 20 which will lower the pull force on the bowsing lines and the potential peak pull will be absorbed by the springs 26 of the line dispensing device 20.

[0076] The tensioning unit 25 is arranged in a vertical position in Fig. 6. In another example, it may be arranged in a horizontal position or any position between horizontal and vertical.

[0077] In Fig. 7, a deployment sequence is shown. In the two figures to the left of Fig. 7, the maritime evacuation system 1 is shown stored in the storage unit 15 at the evacuation station 13 on the maritime structure 2. In the third figure from the left, the deployment arrangement 16 is starting to deploy the chute 14 and the deflated inflatable, floatable unit from the evacuation station 13 into the water. In the second figure from the right, the maritime evacuation system 1 has been deployed and the inflatable, floatable unit 3 is ready to be embarked via the chute 14. The first bowsing system 4 and the second bowsing system 4' are positioning and maintaining the inflatable, floatable unit 3 in the intended position.

[0078] In the figure to the right, a smaller height between the deck of the maritime structure 2 and the water level is present than in the other figures to the left. The maritime evacuation system 1 has also been deployed in this figure, and the inflatable, floatable unit 3 is ready to be embarked via the chute 14. The first bowsing system 4 and the second bowsing system 4' are positioning and maintaining the inflatable, floatable unit 3 in the intended position.

[0079] In Fig. 8, the deployment arrangement 16 is shown. The deployment arrangement 16 is positioned in the storage unit 15 at the evacuation station 13 arranged on the maritime structure 2. During deployment of the maritime evacuation system 1, the deployment arrangement 16 move the chute 14 and the deflated inflatable, floatable unit 3 out of the storage unit 15 and is configured to lower the chute 14 and the deflated inflatable, floatable unit 3 into the water. When the deflated inflatable, floatable unit 3 is in the water it will be inflated automatically and the bowsing system will ensure that it positioned in the intended position for embarking of persons via the chute into the inflatable, floatable unit 3.

[0080] Fig. 9 shows another example of the present disclosure in a side view. In Fig. 9, a maritime evacuation system 1 to be installed on a maritime structure 2 is shown. The maritime evacuation system 1 comprising an inflatable, floatable unit 3 configured to be deployed from the maritime structure 2, the inflatable floatable unit having a longitudinal extension e. The longitudinal extension e is one of the sides of the inflatable, floatable unit 3 being arranged opposite a side of the maritime structure 2. In the example in Fig. 9, the inflatable, floatable unit 3 is deployed into the water w. A sequence of deployment will be described further below. In the present disclosure the inflatable, floatable unit 3 is an inflatable liferaft 3.

[0081] The maritime evacuation system 1 also comprises a first bowsing system 4 configured to positioning and maintaining an intended position of the inflatable, floatable unit 3 in relation to the maritime structure 2 during evacuation of persons at sea. The first bowsing system 4 comprising a first bowsing line 5 extending from the maritime structure 2 to a joint 6 and a second first bowsing line 5" also extending from the maritime structure 2 to the joint 6. The first bowsing line 5 and the second first bowsing line 5" is each connected with maritime structure 2 with a distance between them so that a V-shaped configuration is obtained. Both the first bowsing line 5 and the second first bowsing line 5" is securely connected with joint 6.

[0082] The first bowsing system 4 also comprises a second bowsing line 7 having a first end 8 and a second end 9, the first end 8 and the second end 9 being connected with the inflatable floatable unit 3 at a first attachment point 10 and at a second attachment point 11, respectively, the first attachment point 10 is arranged at a distance from the second attachment point 11 in the longitudinal extension e of the inflatable, floatable unit 3. In addition, by implementing the first bowsing line 5 and the second first bowsing line 5' the risk for the inflatable, floatable unit 3 may rotate in the water is minimised. Hereby, it is ensured that the intended side of the inflatable, floatable unit 3 is facing the side of the maritime structure 2 so that persons may enter the inflatable, floatable unit 3.

[0083] The maritime evacuation system 1 may also comprise one or more winches being arranged in connection with the first bowing line or each of the first bowsing lines at the evacuation station 13.

[0084] Moreover, the evacuation station 13 may also comprise a line dispensing device 20 as shown in Fig. 10. The line dispensing device 20 is configured to level out pull on the first bowsing lines 5, 5' by supplying additional line length between the line dispensing device 20 and the joint. In the example shown in Fig. 10, the line dispensing system 20 is not activated. The line dispensing device 20 comprises a plurality of first device turning points 22 and a plurality of second device turning points 23, the first device turning points 22 being arranged opposite the second device turning points 23. The turning points may be arranged side by side in for instance in a block, pulley or similar having several turnings points.

[0085] The first device turning points 22 are connected with a frame 24, and the second device turning points 23 are connected with a tensioning unit 25. The tensioning unit 25 comprises a linear actuator 40 being connected with a gas cylinder 41. The linear actuator 40 has a pressure chamber and a piston. The piston is connected with the second device turning points 23. The piston is configured to be moved up and down in view of the pressure of the pressure chamber. The pressure the provided by the gas cylinder 41.

[0086] In addition, the line dispensing device 20 also comprises a guide arm 45 movable between an inactive position (as shown in Fig. 10) and an active position (shown in Fig. 11). The guide arm 45 is connected with the frame 24 via pivot point 47.

[0087] In Fig. 11, the guide arm 45 is shown in the activated position. In the activated position the guide arm 45 guides the first bowsing line 5, 5', 5" from the turning points to the joint (not shown). The guide arm 45 comprises an arm turning point 46 arranged at the opposite end compared to the pivot joint 47. The guide arm ensures that the first bowsing line 5, 5', 5" is free of the maritime structure 2 so that the first bowing line 5, 5', 5" may move freely without interference of the maritime structure 2.

[0088] During operation of the line dispensing device 20, and as shown in Fig. 12, the second device turning points 23 are being raised by the piston 42 of the linear actuator 40. Hereby, a length of the first bowsing line 5, 5', 5" which is guided via the first device turning points 22 and second device turning points 23 and the guide arm 45 towards the joint, is kept in the line dispensing device 20. The distance between the first device turning points 22 and second device turning points 23 is large in the situation shown in Fig 12. In the circumstance a large pull in the bowsing lines 5, 5', 5" occur the piston 42 of linear actuator 40 will be forced downwards whereby the distance between the first device turning points and the second device turning points will be minimised as shown in Fig. 11 where the piston is its lowermost position. Accordingly, additional length of the first bowsing line 5, 5', 5" will be pulled out of the line dispensing device 20 which will lower the pull force on the bowsing lines and the potential peak pull will be absorbed by the linear actuator 40 and the gas cylinder 41 of the line dispensing device 20.

[0089] In another example the tensioning unit 25 may comprise a hydraulic cylinder, pneumatic cylinder, or a combination thereof together with one or more springs.

[0090] In Figs. 13a-13b, the guide arm 45 is shown in a front view. In Fig. 13a, the arm turning point 46 is guiding the first bowsing line 5, 5', 5" from the guide arm towards the joint. The arm turning point 46 is rotatably arranged in relation to a longitudinal axis 48 of the guide arm 45 as indicated with the arrows A in Fig. 13a. Hence, the arm turning point 46 may be rotated to the left and to the right depending of the movement and position of the inflatable, floatable unit 3 along the maritime structure. In addition, the guide arm 45 may also be moved around the pivot joint during operation as indicated with arrow B. The arm turning point 46 may both be rotated around the axis 48 as well as moved up and down by rotating the guide arm around the pivot joint. In Fig. 13b, the arm turning point 46 has been rotated to the left around the axis 48 as indicated by the arrow A.

[0091] In addition, the arm turning point 46 may comprises a pulley or a block.
