[0356] Embodiments of the present invention include devices relating to vaporizing one or more materials for inhalation by a user. The term "vaporizer" is used generically in the following description to refer to a vaporizing device. Examples of vaporizers according to embodiments of the present invention include electronic vaporizers, electronic cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or the like. Such vaporizers are generally hand-held devices heating a vaporizable material to provide an inhalable dose of material. The vaporizable material used with a vaporizer may optionally be provided within a cartridge (e.g., a portion of the vaporizer that contains the vaporizable material in a reservoir or other container and that may be refillable when empty or disposable for replacement with a new cartridge containing additional vaporizable material of the same or a different type). A vaporizer may be a cartridge vaporizer, a cartridge-less vaporizer, or a multi-use vaporizer that may be used with or without a cartridge. For example, a multi-use vaporizer may include a heating chamber (e.g., an oven) configured to directly receive vaporizable material in the heating chamber as well as to receive a removable cartridge or device having a reservoir, volume, or the like configured to at least partially contain a usable amount of vaporizable material. In various embodiments, . A vaporizer may be configured for use with a liquid vaporizable material (e.g., a carrier solution in which one or more active and / or inactive ingredients are held in suspension or held in solution or in which a pure liquid forms the vaporizable material itself) or a solid vaporizable material. A solid vaporizable material may include a plant material that utilizes a portion of the plant material as the vaporizable material (e.g., such that a portion of the plant material remains as waste after the vaporizable material is emitted for inhalation by a user) or optionally may be a solid form of the vaporizable material itself (e.g., a "wax") such that the entire solid material may be vaporized for inhalation.A liquid vaporizable material may either be completely vaporized or may include a portion of the liquid material remaining after consumption of all the material suitable for inhalation.
[0357] Referring to the flowchart of [Fig.l], a vaporizer 100 typically includes a power source 8 (such as a battery which may be a rechargeable battery) and a control system 19 (e.g., a processor, circuit, etc. capable of executing logic) for controlling the delivery of heat to an atomizer 26 so as to cause the conversion of a vaporizable material from a condensed form (e.g., a solid, a liquid, a solution, a suspension, a portion of at least partially unprocessed plant material, etc.) into the gas phase. The control system 19 may be part of one or more printed circuit boards (PCBs) according to certain embodiments of the present invention.Once the vaporizable material is converted to the gas phase, and depending on the type of vaporizer, the physical and chemical properties of the vaporizable material, and / or other factors, at least a portion of the vaporizable material in the gas phase may be condensed to form particulate matter in at least a partial local equilibrium with the gas phase as part of an aerosol that may form all or part of an inhalable dose provided by the vaporizer 100 for a given puff or inhalation on the vaporizer. It will be appreciated that the interaction between the gas and condensed phases in an aerosol generated by a vaporizer can be complex and dynamic, since factors such as ambient temperature, relative humidity, chemistry, flow conditions in the airflow paths (both within the vaporizer and in the respiratory tract of a human or animal), mixing of the gas or aerosol phase of a vaporizable material with other airflows, etc., may affect one or more physical parameters of an aerosol. In some vaporizers, and particularly for vaporizers used for the delivery of more volatile vaporizable materials, . the inhalable dose may exist primarily in the gas phase (i.e., the formation of condensed phase particles may be very limited).
[0358] Vaporizers for use with liquid vaporizable materials (e.g., neat liquids, suspensions, solutions, mixtures, etc.) typically include an atomizer 26 in which a capillary penetrating element (also referred to herein as a wick, not shown in [Fig. 1]) which may include any material capable of causing fluid displacement by capillary pressure) transports a quantity of liquid vaporizable material to a portion of the atomizer that includes a heating element (also not shown in [Fig. 1]). The capillary penetrating element is generally configured to draw liquid vaporizable material from a reservoir configured to hold (and which may operably hold) the liquid vaporizable material such that the liquid vaporizable material may be vaporized by heat delivered by a heating element. The capillary penetration element may also optionally allow air to enter the reservoir to replace the volume of liquid removed. In other words, capillary action pulls the liquid vaporizable material into the wick, said material then being vaporized by the heating element (described below) and air may return in some embodiments of the present invention to the reservoir through the wick to at least partially equalize the pressure in the reservoir. Other approaches to allowing air to return to the reservoir so as to equalize the pressure are also included within the scope of the present invention.
[0359] The heating element may be or may include one or more of a conductive heater, a radiant heater, and a convection heater. One type of heating element is a resistance heating element that may be constructed from or at least include a material (e.g., a metal or an alloy, e.g., a nickel-chromium alloy or a non-metallic resistor) configured to dissipate the electric current as heat when the electric current is passed through one or more resistive segments of the heating element. In some embodiments of the present invention, an atomizer may include a heating element that includes a resistive coil or other heating element wound around, positioned with, loosely integrated, pressed into thermal contact with, or otherwise arranged to provide heat to a capillary penetrating element so as to cause a liquid vaporizable material drawn by the capillary penetrating element from a reservoir to be vaporized for subsequent inhalation by a user in a gaseous and / or condensed phase (e.g., aerosol particles or droplets). Other configurations of capillary penetrating element, heating element, and / or atomizer assembly are also possible, as discussed in more detail below.
[0360] Some vaporizers may, additionally or alternatively, be configured to create an inhalable dose of vaporizable material in the gas phase and / or in the aerosol phase via heating a non-liquid vaporizable material, such as, for example, a solid phase vaporizable material (e.g., a wax or its equivalent) or a plant material (e.g., tobacco leaves and / or tobacco leaf parts) containing the vaporizable material. In such vaporizers, a resistance heating element may be part of, or otherwise integrated within, or in thermal contact with, the walls of an oven or other heating chamber in which the non-liquid vaporizable material is placed.Alternatively, a resistance heating element or elements may be used to heat air passing through or past the non-liquid vaporizable material so as to cause convection heating of the non-liquid vaporizable material. In still other examples, a resistance heating element or elements may be disposed in close contact with the plant material so as to produce direct conductive heating of the plant material within the mass of the plant material itself (e.g., as opposed to conduction occurring only inwardly from the walls of a furnace).
[0361] The heating element may be activated (e.g., a control system that is optionally part of a vaporizer body as discussed below may cause current to flow from the power supply source through a circuit including the resistance heating element that is optionally part of a vaporizer cartridge as discussed below), in association with a user puffing (e.g., sucking, inhaling, etc.) on a mouthpiece 21 of the vaporizer so as to cause air to flow from an air inlet, along an airflow path passing through an atomizer (e.g., the capillary penetration element and the heating element), optionally through one or more condensation zones or chambers, to an air outlet in the mouthpiece. The incoming air passes along the airflow path by, through, etc., the atomizer, where the vaporizable gas-phase material is entrained into the air. As noted above, the entrained vaporizable gas-phase material may condense upon passing through the remainder of the airflow path such that an inhalable dose of vaporizable material in aerosol form may be delivered out of the air outlet (e.g., into a mouthpiece 21, for inhalation by a user). .
[0362] Activation of the heating element may be caused by automatic detection of a puff based on one or more signals generated by one or more sensors 29, such as for example a pressure sensor or sensors arranged to detect the pressure along the airflow path relative to the ambient pressure (or optionally measuring changes in absolute pressure), one or more vaporizer motion sensors, one or more vaporizer flow sensors, and / or a vaporizer capacitive lip sensor; in response to detecting a user's interaction with one or more input devices 41 (e.g., buttons or other touch-sensitive control devices of the vaporizer 100) and / or receiving signals from a computing device in communication with the vaporizer and / or via other approaches to determine that a puff is imminent or in progress.
[0363] As discussed in the preceding paragraph, a vaporizer according to embodiments of the present invention may be configured to be connected (e.g., wirelessly or via a wired connection) to a computing device (or optionally two or more devices) in communication with the vaporizer. For this purpose, the control system 19 may include communication hardware 49. The control system may also include a memory 43. A computing device may be a component of a vaporizer system that also includes the vaporizer 100 and may include its own communication hardware capable of establishing a wireless communication channel with the communication hardware 49 of the vaporizer 100.For example, a computing device used as part of a vaporizer system may include a general purpose computing device (e.g., a smartphone, tablet, personal computer, other wearable device such as a smart watch, or the like) that executes software to produce a user interface enabling a user of the device to interact with a vaporizer. In other embodiments of the present invention, such a device used as part of a vaporizer system may be dedicated hardware such as a remote control or other wireless or wired device having one or more physical and / or virtual interface controls (e.g., configurable on a screen or other display device and selectable by a user's interaction with a touchscreen or other input device such as a mouse, pointer, trackball, cursor keys, or the like). The vaporizer may also include one or more output functions or devices 37 for providing information to the user.
[0364] A computing device that is part of a vaporizer system as defined above may be used for any one or more functions, such as dosing control (e.g., dose monitoring, dose setting, dose limiting, user tracking, etc.), session control (e.g., session monitoring, session setting, session limiting, user tracking, etc.), nicotine delivery control (e.g., switching between vaporizable material with and without nicotine, adjusting the amount of nicotine to be delivered, etc.), obtaining location information (e.g., the location of other users, the location of retailers, the location of vaping locations, the relative or absolute location of the vaporizer itself, etc.), customizing the vaporizer (e.g., the name of the vaporizer, the password protecting the vaporizer, setting one or more parental controls, associating the vaporizer with a user group, registering the vaporizer with a manufacturer or warranty service organization, etc.), engaging in social activities with other users (e.g., gaming, communicating via social media, interacting with one or more groups, etc.), or their equivalent. The terms “session,” “vaporizer session,” or “vape session” are used generically to refer to a period of time spent using the vaporizer. The period may include a period of time, a number of doses, a quantity of vaporizable material and / or their equivalent.
[0365] In the example in which a computing device provides signals relating to activation of the resistance heating element or in other examples of coupling a computing device to a vaporizer for implementing various controls or other functions, the computing device executes one or more computer instructions defined to provide a user interface and be the basis for data manipulation. In one example, detection by the computing device of user interaction with one or more user interface elements may cause the computing device to signal the vaporizer 100 to activate the heating element, either to a full operating temperature to create an inhalable dose of vapor / aerosol or to a lower temperature to begin heating the heating element.Other functions of the vaporizer may be controlled by a user's interaction with a user interface on a computing device in communication with the vaporizer.
[0366] The temperature of a resistance heating element of a vaporizer may depend on a number of factors, including an amount of electrical current supplied to the resistance heating element and / or a charge cycle to which the electrical current is supplied, conductive heat transfer to other parts of the electronic vaporizer and / or to the environment, latent heat losses due to vaporization of vaporizable material from the capillary penetrating element and / or the atomizer as a whole, and convective heat losses due to airflow (e.g., air moving through the heating element or the atomizer as a whole when a user inhales on the electronic vaporizer). As noted above, to reliably activate the heating element or heat the heating element to a desired temperature, a vaporizer may, in some embodiments of the present invention, use signals. from a pressure sensor to determine when a user inhales. The pressure sensor may be positioned in the airflow path and / or may be connected (e.g., by a passage or other pathway) to an airflow path connecting an air intake inlet of the device and an outlet through which the user inhales the produced vapor and / or aerosol such that the pressure sensor experiences pressure changes as air passes through the vaporizing device from the air inlet to the air outlet. In some embodiments of the present invention, the heating element may be activated in association with a user puff, e.g., by automatic detection of the puff by the pressure sensor detecting a pressure change in the airflow path.
[0367] Typically, the pressure sensor (as well as any other sensors 29) may be positioned on or coupled (e.g., electrically or electronically connected, either physically or via a wireless connection) to the control system 19 (e.g., a printed circuit board assembly or other type of printed circuit board). To accurately take measurements and extend the life of the vaporizer, it may be beneficial to provide a resilient sealing mechanism 60 to separate an airflow path from other portions of the vaporizer. The sealing mechanism 60, which may be a gasket, may be configured to at least partially surround the pressure sensor such that the connections of the pressure sensor to the internal circuitry of the vaporizer are separated from a portion of the pressure sensor exposed to the airflow path.In one example of a cartridge-based vaporizer, the sealing mechanism or seal 60 may also separate portions of one or more electrical connections between a vaporizer body 50 and a vaporizer cartridge 52. Such arrangements of a seal or sealing mechanism 60 in a vaporizer 100 may be useful in mitigating potentially harmful impacts on vaporizer components resulting from interactions with environmental factors such as water in the vapor or liquid phases, other fluids such as vaporizable material, etc. and / or in reducing air escape from the intended airflow path in the vaporizer.Air, liquid and / or any other unwanted fluid passing through and / or coming into contact with the vaporizer circuitry can cause various undesirable effects such as alteration of the pressure reading and / or can cause unwanted matter, such as moisture, vaporizable matter, etc., to build up in parts of the vaporizer where it can cause a poor pressure signal, degradation of the pressure sensor or other components and / or a reduction in the life of the vaporizer. Leaks in the sealing mechanism or the . seal 60 may also cause a user to inhale air passing over portions of the vaporizing device containing materials that may be undesirable to inhale or over portions constructed from such materials.
[0368] A general category of vaporizers that has recently gained popularity includes a vaporizer body 50 that includes a control system 19, a power source 8 (e.g., a battery), one or more sensors, charging contacts, a seal or sealing mechanism 60, and a cartridge receptacle 69 configured to receive a vaporizer cartridge 52 to be coupled to the vaporizer body 50 through one or more of a variety of attachment structures. In some examples, the vaporizer cartridge 52 includes a reservoir 55 configured to contain a liquid vaporizable material and a mouthpiece 21 configured to dispense an inhalable dose to a user. The vaporizer cartridge may include an atomizer 26 having a capillary penetration element and a heating element.Alternatively, one or both of the capillary penetration element and the heating element may be part of the vaporizer body 50. In embodiments in which one or both of the atomizer 26 (e.g., the heating element and / or the capillary penetration element) is part of the vaporizer body 50, the vaporizer may be configured to deliver liquid vaporizable material from a reservoir provided in the vaporizer cartridge to the atomizer portion or portions included in the vaporizer body.
[0369] Cartridge-based configurations for vaporizers that generate an inhalable dose of non-liquid vaporizable material by heating a non-liquid vaporizable material are also included within the scope of the present invention. For example, a vaporizer cartridge may include a mass of a processed plant material formed to be in direct contact with portions of one or more resistance heating elements and such a vaporizer cartridge may be configured to be mechanically and electrically coupled to a vaporizer body that includes a processor, a power supply source, and electrical contacts for connection to corresponding cartridge contacts to close a circuit with the one or more resistance heating elements.
[0370] In vaporizers in which the power supply source 8 is part of a vaporizer body 50 and a heating element is disposed in a vaporizer cartridge 52 configured to be coupled to the vaporizer body 50, the vaporizer 100 may include electrical connection features (e.g., means for closing a circuit) configured to close a circuit that includes the control system (e.g., a printed circuit board, a microcontroller system, or the like), the power supply source and the heating element. These functions may include at least two contacts on a bottom surface of the vaporizer cartridge 52 (referred to herein as cartridge contacts 65) and at least two contacts disposed proximate a base of the cartridge receptacle (referred to herein as receptacle contacts 62) of the vaporizer 100 such that the cartridge contacts 65 and the receptacle contacts 62 make electrical connections when the vaporizer cartridge 52 is inserted into and coupled to the cartridge receptacle 69.The circuit closed by these electrical connections may be used to supply electrical power to the resistance heating element and may further be used for additional functions, such as measuring a resistance of the resistance heating element for use in determining and / or controlling a temperature of the resistance heating element based on a thermal coefficient of resistance of the resistance heating element, identifying a cartridge based on one or more electrical functions of a resistance heating element or other circuits of the vaporizer cartridge, etc.
[0371] In some examples of the present invention, the at least two cartridge contacts and the at least two receptacle contacts may be configured to be electrically connected in either of at least two orientations. In other words, one or more circuits necessary for proper operation of the vaporizer can be closed by inserting a vaporizer cartridge 52 into the cartridge receptacle 69 in a first rotational direction (about an axis along which the end of the vaporizer cartridge 52 having the cartridge contacts 65 is inserted into the cartridge receptacle 69 of the vaporizer body 50) such that a first cartridge contact of the at least two cartridge contacts 65 is electrically connected to a first receptacle contact of the at least two receptacle contacts 62 and a second cartridge contact of the at least two cartridge contacts 65 is electrically connected to a second receptacle contact of the at least two receptacle contacts 62.In addition, the circuit of the circuits necessary for proper operation of the vaporizer can be closed by inserting a vaporizer cartridge 52 into the cartridge receptacle 69 in a second rotational direction such that the first cartridge contact of the at least two cartridge contacts 65 is electrically connected to the second receptacle contact of the at least two receptacle contacts 62 and the second cartridge contact of the at least two cartridge contacts 65 is electrically connected to the first receptacle contact of the at least two receptacle contacts 62. This function of a vaporizer cartridge 52 insertable in the reverse direction into a cartridge receptacle 69 of the vaporizer body 50 is described in more detail below.
[0372] In an exemplary attachment structure configured to couple a vaporizer cartridge 52 to a vaporizer body, the vaporizer body 50 includes a trigger (e.g., a notch, a projection, etc.) projecting inwardly from an interior surface of the cartridge receptacle 69. One or more exterior surfaces of the vaporizer cartridge 52 may include corresponding recesses (not shown in [Fig. 1]) that may fit and / or otherwise snap into place via such triggers when one end of the vaporizer cartridge 52 is inserted into the cartridge receptacle 69 on the vaporizer body 50.When the vaporizer cartridge 52 and the vaporizer body 50 are coupled (e.g., by inserting one end of the vaporizer cartridge 52 into the cartridge receptacle 69 of the vaporizer body 50), the trigger provided in the vaporizer body 50 may fit within and / or otherwise be retained within the recesses of the vaporizer cartridge 52 to hold the vaporizer cartridge 52 in place once assembled.Such a trigger-recess assembly may provide sufficient support to hold the vaporizer cartridge 52 in place to ensure good contact between the at least two cartridge contacts 65 and the at least two receptacle contacts 62, while still allowing the vaporizer cartridge 52 to be detached from the vaporizer body 50 when a user pulls with reasonable force on the vaporizer cartridge 52 to disengage the vaporizer cartridge 52 from the cartridge receptacle 69.
[0373] In addition to the above description of electrical connections between a vaporizer cartridge and a vaporizer body 50 being reversible such that at least two directions of rotation of the vaporizer cartridge 52 are possible in the cartridge receptacle 69, in some vaporizers the shape of the vaporizer cartridge 52, or at least one shape of the end of the vaporizer cartridge that is configured to be inserted into the cartridge receptacle 69, may have at least twofold rotational symmetry. In other words, the vaporizer cartridge 52 or at least the insertable end of the vaporizer cartridge 52 may be symmetrical upon rotation of 180° about an axis along which the vaporizer cartridge 52 is inserted into the cartridge receptacle 69.In such a configuration, the circuitry of the vaporizer body 50 can support identical operation regardless of the symmetrical orientation of the vaporizer cartridge 52 used.
[0374] In some examples, the vaporizer cartridge 52, or at least one end of the vaporizer cartridge 52 configured to be inserted into the cartridge receptacle 69, may have a non-circular cross-section transverse to the axis along which the vaporizer cartridge 52 is inserted into the cartridge receptacle 69. For example, the non-circular cross-section may be approximately rectangular, approximately elliptical (e.g., having an approximately oval shape), non-rectangular but with two sets of opposite sides that are parallel or approximately parallel (e.g., having a shape similar to a parallelogram), or other shapes having at least twofold rotational symmetry. In this context, having approximately a shape indicates that a basic resemblance of the described shape is apparent but that the sides of the shape in question need not be completely linear and the vertices need not be completely pointed. Rounding of one or both edges or vertices of the cross-sectional shape is contemplated in the description of any non-circular cross-section discussed herein.
[0375] The at least two cartridge contacts 65 and the at least two receptacle contacts 62 may take various forms. For example, one or both sets of contacts may include conductive pins, tabs, posts, receiving holes for the pins or posts, or the like. Some types of contacts may include springs or other compression features to provide better physical and electrical contact between the contacts on the vaporizer cartridge and the vaporizer body. The electrical contacts may optionally be gold-plated and / or may include other materials.
[0376] Various advantages and benefits of the present invention may relate to improvements relative to current vaporizer configurations, manufacturing methods, and the like. For example, some currently available vaporizers include charging contacts providing an electrical interface between a charging device or other power source and a battery of the vaporizer. In some situations, the charging contacts may wear out and / or may need to be replaced. Some vaporizers may require replacement of the entire unit in such situations. A modularized device having, for example, a cap module that includes the charging contacts, would allow for replacement of only one or more components without the need to replace the entire unit.
[0377] Additionally, during the manufacture of a vaporizer, components having certain tolerances may be coupled together. Certain manufacturing defects may result in manufacturing outside of a desired tolerance range. Such tolerance issues may become more likely with complex sealing structures that may increase the likelihood of leakage and / or other failure with the seal. An outer shell that surrounds various internal components may form, together with the internal components, a single unit. Such devices may present manufacturing challenges. For example, each of the internal components, whether small or large, as well as than the outer shell, may need to be assembled in a unique position. Assembling each of the device's components to form the single unit can pose tolerance and other machining issues. For example, due to the complexity of some internal components and the size or shape of some components, the device's components may not be well aligned upon assembly.
[0378] For an assembled vaporizer, it may be difficult to resolve problems that may arise with any of the internal components when the components and the outer shell are assembled as a single unit. A modularized vaporizer may advantageously resolve some or all of the problems that may arise from manufacturing the device as a single unit, such as in a single location. For example, a modularized vaporizer may be assembled by combining two or more larger components within the outer shell. The modularized vaporizer may improve manufacturability by allowing subassemblies to be manufactured in more than one location. Assembling only a few subassemblies at a time to form the vaporizer may also help reduce tolerance issues and may allow certain internal components (or subassemblies) to be more easily attached or replaced. As described in more detail below, one or more separate subassemblies may be combined and may be coupled to the outer shell. The one or more separate subassemblies may be configured to be coupled to the outer shell through an opening provided in one or more sides of the outer shell.
[0379] Various cartridge connection features may present additional challenges in that the designs may not be compact in volume and may therefore tend to occupy a significant portion of the vaporizer 100 in which they are integrated. A modularized cartridge connector designed for a vaporizer 100, according to the features of one or more embodiments of the present invention, may provide advantages and improvements over existing approaches while introducing the additional benefits described herein. For example, triggers placed in the walls of the cartridge receptacle 69 of the vaporizer body 50 (e.g., to securely hold a vaporizer cartridge 52 in place) may be difficult to manufacture in a reproducible manner. For example, specialized tools may be required during the manufacture of the vaporizer body 50 to precisely position the triggers in the interior walls of the cartridge receptacle 69. Incorrectly positioned triggers may result in defective and / or leaking seals and / or may not provide a good, secure connection between the vaporizer cartridge and the vaporizer body.
[0380] It will be further understood that over time and due to repeated use of the vaporizer, plating and / or structural material of the exposed electrical contacts may wear, corrode, undergo thermal degradation, etc. which may result in an increase in contact resistance between the cartridge contacts 65 and the receptacle contacts 62, undesirably reducing the performance of the vaporizer 100. For example, the vaporizer may not heat adequately and / or may not generate a desired amount of the vaporized vaporizable material to be inhaled by the user.
[0381] As noted above, the vaporizer 100 according to embodiments of the present invention may include a vaporizer body 50 having an outer shell and a vaporizer cartridge 52 (also referred to as a cartridge or pod). The vaporizer body 50 may include a power source 8 (e.g., a battery), a control system 19, and an interface for establishing electrical and mechanical connection with the vaporizer cartridge 52. In some embodiments, the vaporizer body 50 may include a cartridge connector providing an interface between the vaporizer body 50 and the vaporizer cartridge 52 and / or one or more sealing mechanisms 60 for isolating certain portions of the vaporizer body 50 from the vaporizer cartridge 52 (and more particularly from vaporizable material that may escape from the vaporizer cartridge 52).A cartridge connector according to embodiments of the present invention may be implemented as a modular component that may be removably coupled to at least the outer shell or another component of the vaporizer body 50.
[0382] In some embodiments, the vaporizer body 50 may also include a cap module having charging contacts providing an interface between the battery of the vaporizer body and an external power source. The cap module described in accordance with embodiments of the present invention may be implemented as a modular component removably coupleable to at least the outer shell or another component of the vaporizer body 50.
[0383] As noted above, the vaporizer cartridge 52 may generally include a reservoir, an airway, and an atomizer 26. In some configurations, the heating element and / or atomizer described in accordance with embodiments of the present invention may be implemented directly within a vaporizer body and / or may not be removable from the vaporizer body. In some embodiments, the vaporizer body may not include a removable cartridge or cartridge connector.
[0384] [Fig. 1A] illustrates a schematic view of a vaporizer body 50 according to embodiments of the present invention. The vaporizer body 50 may include an outer shell 102, a cartridge connector 106 for coupling (mechanically and / or electrically) to a vaporizer cartridge 52 (not shown in [Fig. 1A]), and a cap module 502. The cartridge connector 106 and the cap module may be implemented as modular components removably coupled at least to the outer shell 102 of the vaporizer body 50.
[0385] The cartridge connector 106 provides an interface between the vaporizer body 50 and the vaporizer cartridge 52. As explained in more detail below, the cartridge connector 106 includes an upper portion 112 and a lower portion 114, a cartridge connector body 101, a sealing mechanism 160 (e.g., a seal or sealing mechanism 60), one or more receptacle contacts 62, and / or one or more retention features 120.
[0386] The retention features 120 may securely attach the cartridge connector 106 to the outer shell 102 and the vaporizer cartridge 52 to the cartridge connector 106 within the outer shell 102. The retention features 120 may eliminate the need for triggers to be positioned within the outer shell 102, reducing tolerance and manufacturing issues. The retention features 120 may more securely engage the vaporizer cartridge 52 via one or more tabbed portions, as explained in more detail below.
[0387] The receptacle contacts 62 may be configured to electrically communicate with one or more cartridge contacts 65 of the vaporizer cartridge 52. Current may be supplied from the vaporizer device to the heating element of the vaporizer cartridge 52 via an electrical interface defined by the electrical communication between the cartridge contacts 65 of the vaporizer cartridge 52 and the receptacle contacts 62 of the cartridge connector 106, for example when the heating element is activated.
[0388] The sealing mechanism 160 may extend radially around at least a portion of an outer side surface of the cartridge connector 106, e.g., entirely around the sides of the cartridge connector 106, to seal the cartridge connector 106 on each side within the outer shell 102 of the vaporizer body 50. The sealing mechanism 160 may include a variety of profiles. For example, the sealing mechanism 160 may include a single or double symmetrical seal. The sealing mechanism 160 may also include a single or double frictional seal configuration. The sealing mechanism may provide a seal sufficient to reduce the likelihood of air and / or unwanted material entering the cartridge connector 106. The sealing mechanism 160 helps ensure that a pressure sensor (positioned along the lower portion 114 of the cartridge connector 106), among other electronic components, is adequately sealed from the environment and / or the vaporizer cartridge 52, assembly.
[0389] The cap module 502 provides an interface between the internal components of the vaporizer body 50, the outer shell 102, and an external power source. As explained in more detail below, the cap module includes one or more charging contacts 524 and one or more lighting devices (e.g., a light source), e.g., one or more LEDs 534. The charging contacts 524 may be connected to an external power source for charging and / or recharging a power source of the vaporizer body 50. The light source 534 may provide various indicators to the user, e.g., via various light patterns and / or brightness levels.
[0390] [Fig.lA] illustrates an exemplary vaporizer body 50 comprising one or more modular components, wherein the cartridge connector 106 is coupled to a frame 504. The cartridge connector 106 forms, together with a portion of the outer shell of the vaporizer body 50, the cartridge receptacle 69 of the vaporizer body 50. Figures 1B-1E illustrate an exemplary vaporizer body 50 comprising one or more modular components.
[0391] As illustrated in Figures 1B-1E, the vaporizer body 50 includes the outer shell 102 and a frame subassembly 501. The outer shell 102 includes a first end portion 531 and a second end portion 533, each of which defines an opening. The opening of the first end portion 531 may receive one or more internal components of the vaporizer body 50 and may receive the vaporizer cartridge 52 in operation. The opening of the second end portion 533 may receive one or more internal components of the vaporizer body 50, e.g., the frame subassembly 501. As described below, the second end portion 533 may be coupled to at least a portion of the frame subassembly 501, e.g., the cap module 502.
[0392] The outer shell 102 may have an approximately rectangular shape as well as other shapes. The outer shell 102 includes opposing side walls that have one or more receiving features (see [Fig.7A]). The one or more receiving features may be coupled to at least a portion of the frame subassembly 501, for example to the cartridge connector 106. The receiving features include one or more recesses for coupling to the cartridge connector 106, for example via a snap-in arrangement, to retain the frame subassembly 501 within the outer shell 102.
[0393] In some embodiments, the outer shell 102 may comprise certain materials, such as plastic and / or a metal, such as stainless steel, extruded aluminum, etc. In some embodiments, the outer shell 102 may comprise one or more windows through which one or more LEDs and / or other indicators positioned in the vaporizer body 50 may be visible, for example, a lower portion of the outer shell 102.
[0394] The frame subassembly 501 may include the frame 504, the cap module 502, the cartridge connector 106, a power supply source, such as a battery 508, and electronic circuitry (e.g., a rigid flex element 24B, a PCBA 512, and a secondary PCBA 512A). The framework 504 defines a rigid tray structure that at least partially surrounds and securely attaches the cap module 502, the cartridge connector 106, the battery 508, the rigid flex element 510, the PCBA 512 and the secondary PCBA 512A, and the other internal components of the vaporizer body 50. The modular components, e.g., at least the cap module 502 and the cartridge connector 106, may thus be coupled to and reside within the framework 504 to form a subassembly that may be coupled to the outer shell 102.As explained in more detail below, the frame subassembly 501 may be inserted into and removably coupled to the outer shell 102.
[0395] Referring to [Fig. 1E], the frame 504 may include a rear wall 540, a first side wall 542, and a second side wall 544. The rear wall 540, the first side wall 542, and the second side wall 544 form a receiving region (e.g., an interior volume) in which at least portions of the other components of the frame subassembly 501 may be securely attached. The frame 504 thus forms a rigid tray structure that may securely attach the internal components of the vaporizer body 50. The frame 504 may be fabricated from a metal or other rigid material, such as a plastic.
[0396] The first and second sidewalls 542, 544 may include a retaining spring 546 at a first end portion 545 that may be coupled to the cartridge connector 106 and securely attach it to the frame 504. The retaining springs 546 may extend inwardly from the first and second sidewalls 542, 544 of the frame 504 toward each other. The retaining springs 546 may be biased inwardly from the first and second sidewalls 542, 544 of the frame 504 toward each other to provide a spring-like function. As explained in more detail below, the springs retainer 546 may be coupled to a corresponding function of the cartridge connector 106, for example via a snap-in arrangement or a biasing arrangement. The first end portion 545 of the frame 504 may also include a cartridge connector secure attachment feature 549 that wraps around at least a portion of the cartridge connector 106 to better securely secure the cartridge connector 106 within the frame 504 and reduce movement of the cartridge connector 106 upon assembly.
[0397] At a second end portion 547, the frame 504 may include the cap module connection features 550. The cap module connection features 550 may extend from the second end portion 547 beyond the rear wall 540. The cap module connection features 550 may be coupled to at least a portion of the cap module 502. The cap module connection features 550 may be configured to be positioned in a slot of the cap module 502 so as to securely attach the cap module 502 to the frame 504.
[0398] [Fig.28] illustrates another example of a frame 2804 which may comprise the same properties and functions as the frame 504 or similar properties and functions. For example, the frame 2804 may include a back wall 2840, a first side wall 2842, and a second side wall 2844. The back wall 2840, the first side wall 2842, and the second side wall 2844 form a receiving region in which at least portions of the other components of the frame subassembly 2801 may be securely attached. The frame 2804 thus forms a rigid tray structure for securely attaching the internal components of the vaporizer body 50. The frame 2804 may be made from a metal or any other rigid material, for example, a plastic.
[0399] The first and second sidewalls 2842, 2844 may include a retaining spring 2846 at a first end portion 2845 that may be coupled to the cartridge connector 106 and securely attach it to the frame 2804. The retaining springs 2846 may extend inwardly from the first and second sidewalls 2842, 2844 of the frame 2804 toward each other. The retaining springs 2846 may be biased inwardly from the first and second sidewalls 2842, 2844 of the frame 2804 toward each other to provide a spring-like function. As explained in more detail below, the retaining springs 2846 may be coupled to a corresponding function of the cartridge connector 106, for example via a snap-in arrangement or a biasing arrangement. The first end portion 2845 of the frame 2804 may also include a cartridge connector secure attachment member 2849 that wraps around at least a portion of the cartridge connector. 106 so as to better securely secure the cartridge connector 106 within the frame 2804 and to reduce movement of the cartridge connector 106 upon assembly.
[0400] At a second end portion 2847, the frame 2804 may include cap module connection features 2850. The cap module connection features 2850 may extend out of the second end portion 2847, beyond the rear wall 2840. The cap module connection features 2850 may be coupled to at least a portion of the cap module 2802. The cap module connection features 2850 may be configured to be positioned within a slot of the cap module 2802 so as to securely attach the cap module 2802 to the frame 2804.
[0401] Figures 2A-4 illustrate examples of cartridge connector 106 or portions of cartridge connector 106 according to embodiments of the present invention. Cartridge connector 106 may include cartridge connector body 101, sealing mechanism 160, one or more receptacle contacts 62, and / or one or more retention features 120.
[0402] Figures 2B and 2C illustrate exemplary cartridge connector bodies 101 according to embodiments of the present invention. As illustrated, the cartridge connector body 101 may include at least one connector slot 136 along the upper portion 112 of the cartridge connector 106 that may receive at least a portion of a corresponding receptacle contact 62.
[0403] The connector slot 136 includes a platform 132. The platform 132 supports the receptacle contacts 62 when the vaporizer cartridge 52 is coupled to the outer shell 102. The platform 132, in conjunction with the surrounding walls, may also help reduce damage to the receptacle contacts 62 when cleaning the apparatus. The platform 132 may be approximately parallel to the top surface of the cartridge connector 106. In some embodiments, the platform 132 may be angled relative to the top surface of the cartridge connector 106.
[0404] For example, as illustrated in at least Figures 2B and 2D, the platform 132 may be angled downward toward a central longitudinal axis of the cartridge connector 106. Such configurations may allow the receptacle contacts 62 to be pivoted and / or flexed further within the cartridge connector 106 when the vaporizer cartridge 52 is assembled to the outer shell 102 and / or the cartridge connector 106. Such configurations may allow a more secure clamping connection between the receptacle contacts 62 and the cartridge contacts 65 to be desired. The angled platforms 132 may desirably allow the receptacle contacts 62 to be positioned closer to the center of the cartridge connector 106 and / or further from the sides of the cartridge connector 106. Such configurations may desirably provide additional space for greater wall thickness along the sides of the cartridge connector 106 to provide additional reinforcement to the retention functions (described below). [Fig. 2G] illustrates an example of platforms 132 according to embodiments of the present invention, with one or more angled ramp sections. [Fig. 3] illustrates an example of platforms 132 according to embodiments of the present invention, with one or more stepped sections. [Fig. 4] illustrates an example of platforms 132 according to embodiments of the present invention, with one or more ramp sections and stepped sections.
[0405] The connector slots 136 may receive one or more receptacle contacts 62. In some embodiments, the cartridge connector 106 may include at least two receptacle contacts 62. For example, Figures 2A-2K, 3, and 4 illustrate examples of cartridge connectors 106 incorporating at least two receptacle contacts 62. In some embodiments, the cartridge connector 106 may include at least four receptacle contacts 62 (see, for example, Figures 5A-8H), or a greater or lesser number of receptacle contacts 62. The receptacle contacts 62 may be integrally formed with the cartridge connector 106 or be formed separately from the cartridge connector 106 and subsequently coupled to the cartridge connector 106.
[0406] The receptacle contacts 62 may be positioned on a portion of the cartridge connector 106 configured to interface with a portion of the vaporizer cartridge 52. The receptacle contacts 62 are positioned along the upper portion 112 of the cartridge connector 106. The receptacle contacts 62 may define portions of the cartridge connector 106 that extend upwardly out of an upper surface of the upper portion 112 of the receptacle contacts 62.
[0407] The receptacle contacts 62 may include a material that enhances the properties of the receptacle contacts 62 and / or may help maintain a better connection between the receptacle contacts 62 and the cartridge contacts 65. For example, the receptacle contacts 62 may include an alloy or metal, such as beryllium copper, titanium copper, steel, stainless steel, or the like, among other alloys or metals having one or more of high strength, high elasticity, corrosion resistance, high conductivity, and / or the like. At least a portion of the receptacle contacts 62 may be plated with a material, e.g., gold, to strengthen the portion plated receptacle contacts 62. For example, a bend between the lower and upper portion of the bent portion 134 may be gold plated.
[0408] The receptacle contacts 62 may increase the performance of the vaporizer body 50 according to embodiments of the present invention. In some embodiments, the receptacle contacts may desirably have a life of at least 10,000 or 30,000 cycles or a greater number of cycles before fatigue. In some embodiments, the materials of the receptacle contacts 62 may allow a maximum continuous current of 1A or 2A to be drawn and / or a maximum of 2A or more for short-term current draws.
[0409] The receptacle contacts 62 may include a contact portion 122 and / or a coupling portion 124. At least a portion of the contact portion 122 may be configured to contact and / or be electrically coupled to the vaporizer cartridge 52. The coupling portion 124 may be coupled to the cartridge connector 106 and / or other components, e.g., a printed circuit board (e.g., a PCB A).
[0410] The contact portion 122 of the receptacle contacts 62 may include an outer surface 126 that may contact the vaporizer cartridge 52 upon assembly. The outer surface 126 may be desirably shaped to provide a large surface area for contacting the vaporizer cartridge 52. The large surface area may provide a better and / or more secure-attachment contact interface between the receptacle contacts 62 and the cartridge contacts 65 of the vaporizer cartridge 52. The outer surface 126 may be flat and / or rounded, among other configurations. The outer flat surface 126 may desirably provide a more secure-attachment contact interface between the receptacle contacts 62 and the cartridge contacts 65 of the vaporizer cartridge 52.
[0411] The receptacle contacts 62 may define a biasing element, e.g., one or more springs. For example, in some embodiments, the contact portion 122 may extend at an angle relative to a horizontal axis that is parallel to a top surface of the cartridge connector 106. The angled contact portion 122 may bias the receptacle contacts 62 away from a platform 132 positioned within the connector slot 136. In some embodiments, the receptacle contacts 62 may be biased toward the vaporizer cartridge 52 upon assembly or toward an upper portion of the outer shell 102 of the vaporizer body 50.
[0412] The contact portion 122 may include a lower portion 128 and an upper portion 130. The lower portion 128 and / or the upper portion 130 may be angled so as to extend upwardly away from the platform 132. In some embodiments embodiment, the lower portion 128 may extend at an angle away from the platform 132 and the upper portion 130 may extend at an angle relative to the platform 132. The angle of the lower portion 128 may be less than the angle of the upper portion 130. Such configurations may provide a more secure clamping connection between the receptacle contacts 62 of the cartridge connector 106 and the cartridge contacts 65 of the vaporizer cartridge 52. For example, when the vaporizer cartridge 52 is inserted into the outer shell 102 of the vaporizer body 50, the cartridge contacts 65 may contact the receptacle contacts 62.The cartridge contacts 65 may be compressed onto the angled receptacle contacts 62, causing at least a portion of the contact portion 122 to rotate, flex, and / or deflect from a neutral position to a compressed position toward the platform 132 near a deflected portion 134 of the receptacle contacts 62. Such configurations may help to desirably ensure that the cartridge contacts 65 are securely attached in communication with the receptacle contacts 62 at the assembly. In some embodiments, the contact portion 122 may deflect up to at least 1.2 mm between the neutral position and the compressed position. In some embodiments, the receptacle contacts 62 may provide a force of at least 80 to 110 g in the fully compressed position.
[0413] In some embodiments, the receptacle contacts 62 may include an anti-snag feature 138. The anti-snag feature 138 may be positioned at one end of the upper portion 130 of the contact portion 122 and include a portion of the receptacle contacts 62 that is flexed below the outer surface of the upper portion 130 and / or otherwise blunt. The anti-snag feature 138 may desirably contribute to limiting or preventing the vaporizer cartridge 52 from snagging on the receptacle contacts 62. Such configurations may desirably extend the life of the receptacle contacts 62. The anti-snag feature 138 may contribute to limiting or preventing snagging on the receptacle contacts 62 during cleaning, for example.
[0414] As illustrated in at least Figures 2B-2D and 2G, the coupling portion 124 may extend downwardly out of a lower portion of the contact portion 122. In some embodiments, the coupling portion 124 may extend in a direction approximately parallel to a longitudinal axis of the cartridge connector 106 and / or toward a side of the outer shell 102. In some embodiments, the coupling portion 124 may extend at least partially within a coupling slot 140 of the cartridge connector 106. In some embodiments, at least the coupling portion 124 may be insert molded, stitched, glued, secured, pressed into an interference fit, and / or flexed at a second time into at least one of the outer shell 102. less the coupling slot 140 of the cartridge connector 106. An opening of the coupling slot 140 may be formed within the connector slot 136. The coupling slot 140 may extend through the cartridge connector 106 such that the coupling slot 140 includes an opening at an upper and lower end of the coupling slot 140. The flexed portion 134 may be supported by a ridge formed by the platform 132 and by an interior sidewall of the coupling slot 140.
[0415] As mentioned above, the cartridge connector 106 may include a control system 19 that may be or include a printed circuit board 142, for example, a flexible printed circuit board 142 and / or a PCBA 512, among other configurations. A printed circuit board 142 may be coupled to the lower portion 114 of the cartridge connector 106 via a rigid flex member 510 and / or the secondary PCBA 512A. The printed circuit board 142 may be positioned below the cartridge connector 106 when the cartridge connector 106 is assembled to the outer shell 102. In some embodiments, the printed circuit board 142 may include a top portion that may be coupled to a bottom surface of the cartridge connector 106. In some embodiments, the printed circuit board 142 is mechanically secured and / or coupled to the cartridge connector 106.
[0416] As illustrated in at least Figures 2H and 21, the printed circuit board 142 may be coupled to the receptacle contacts 62. The receptacle contacts 62 may include a lower end portion that is soldered, crimped, mechanically coupled, and / or otherwise coupled to a lower surface of the cartridge connector 106 and / or the printed circuit board 142. In some embodiments, the lower surface of the cartridge connector 106 may include solder pads for the receptacle contacts 62 to be soldered. In some embodiments, plastic, e.g., LDS, may be used to form traces that may be a hot bar soldered to the printed circuit board 142, for example.
[0417] Soldering the receptacle contacts 62 to the cartridge connector 106 and / or the printed circuit board 142 may provide direct access to the vaporizer cartridge 52 upon assembly. Such configurations may desirably reduce manufacturing errors and / or defects and maintain a more secure clamping connection between the printed circuit board and the vaporizer cartridge 52, extending the life of the body 50.
[0418] As previously mentioned, to reliably activate a portion of the atomizer component of the vaporizer cartridge 52, a pressure sensor 129 may be positioned in the air path and / or may be connected to the air path of the air transmitted through the vaporization device along an airflow path. In some examples, the atomizer component may be activated in association with a user puff, e.g., by automatic detection of the puff via a pressure sensor, e.g., pressure sensor 129.
[0419] The pressure sensor 129 (illustrated in at least Figures 2B-2D and 4) may be positioned on a lower surface of the lower portion 114 of the cartridge connector 106. In some embodiments, the cartridge connector 106 may include a pressure sensor recess 156. The pressure sensor recess 156 may be positioned in the lower surface of the lower portion 114 of the cartridge connector 106. The pressure sensor recess 156 may receive and / or retain the pressure sensor 129 and / or the pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 (described below).
[0420] The pressure sensor recess 156 may be approximately rectangular (e.g., in [Fig. 5J]), square, oval, circular, or other shapes. The pressure sensor recess 156 may be shaped and / or sized to receive the pressure sensor 129 and / or the pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164. The pressure sensor 129 may be secured, welded, mechanically coupled, and / or the equivalent thereof to the lower surface of the lower portion of the cartridge connector 106 within the pressure sensor recess 156. In some embodiments, the pressure sensor 129 may be insert molded into at least a portion of the cartridge connector 106 to increase retention and / or stability. The pressure sensor 129 may be desirably positioned proximate the interface between the vaporizer cartridge 52 and the cartridge connector 106.Such configurations may desirably reduce the length of the air path between the vaporizer cartridge 52 and the pressure sensor 129. This may help to reduce or limit inappropriate readings, leaks in the air path, and / or unwanted passage of air or other materials in contact with the pressure sensor 129. Such configurations may desirably improve the performance of the vaporizer device 100.
[0421] As illustrated in at least Figures 2A-2K, 3, and 4, the cartridge connector 106 may include a pressure sensor port 152. The pressure sensor port 152 may define a passage extending through a thickness of the cartridge connector 106. The passage may provide an air path for air to pass through the pressure sensor 129, for example, while a user takes a puff. The pressure sensor port 152 may be approximately aligned with the longitudinal axis of the cartridge connector 106. The pressure sensor port 152 may be positioned between the receptacle contacts 62. The pressure sensor port 152 may be positioned between the connector slots 136. An opening of the port pressure sensor 152 may be desirably positioned at the upper surface of the upper portion 108 of the cartridge connector 106. Such configurations may be desirably aligned with at least a portion of an air passage of the vaporizer cartridge 52, upon assembly, to accurately determine when the user is taking a puff.
[0422] To accurately measure air pressure to determine whether or not the user is taking a puff, the pressure sensor 129 may optionally be desirably positioned away from the vaporizer cartridge 52 and / or sealed to one side of the cartridge connector 106 (e.g., the side extending away from the vaporizer cartridge 52 or the side opposite the cartridge receptacle 69, upon assembly). Such a seal may desirably help limit or prevent air or other unwanted material from passing through the sides of the cartridge connector 106, resulting in a buildup of unwanted material on the internal components of the vaporizer body 50.It is desirable for the cartridge connector 106 to include a seal or seal, for example the seal mechanism 160 according to embodiments of the present invention, to limit the passage of liquid or air at the pressure sensor 129 or the cartridge connector 106 within the vaporizer body 50. This helps to limit or prevent the entry of unwanted material into the vaporizer body 50 for improved reliability and improves the performance of the vaporizer body 50 by helping to ensure that accurate pressure measurements are taken by the pressure sensor 129.
[0423] With reference to Figures 2B and 2C, the cartridge connector body 101 may include a sealing recess 163 (see, for example, Figures 2B and 2C). The sealing recess 162 extends radially around a perimeter of the outer side surface of the cartridge connector body 101. The sealing recess 163 extends inwardly from the outer side surface of the cartridge connector body 101 toward a recessed side surface of the cartridge connector body 101. The sealing recess 163 may be positioned offset from an upper surface of the upper portion 112 and offset from a lower surface of the lower portion 114 of the cartridge connector 106.The sealing recess 163 may be configured to receive at least a portion of the sealing mechanism 160 as explained in more detail below, to support the sealing mechanism 160 within the recess 163, upon assembly. Such configurations may desirably reinforce the sealing mechanism 160 so as to better maintain and / or more securely fix the seal formed between the cartridge connector 106 and the interior surface of the outer shell 102.
[0424] The sealing mechanism 160 may be positioned within the sealing recess 163 and extend radially around at least a portion of an outer side surface of the cartridge connector body 101. In some embodiments, the sealing mechanism 160 may be wrapped around all faces of the outer side surface of the cartridge connector body 101 to seal the cartridge connector 106 on each side once positioned within the outer shell 102 of the vaporizer body 50.
[0425] The sealing mechanism 160 may include a variety of configurations. The sealing mechanism 160 may include a ribbed structure. The ribbed structure may desirably include at least one or two ribs extending radially near the sealing mechanism 160. In some embodiments, the ribbed structure may include two, three, four, five or more ribs that extend radially near the sealing mechanism 160. The ribbed structure having at least one or two ribs provides a sealing structure that ensures and / or maintains a quality seal between the cartridge connector 106 and the outer shell 102.In some embodiments, the sealing mechanism 160 may be compressed between the outer sealing surface of the sealing recess 163 and the inner wall of the outer shell 102, upon assembly, to reduce the likelihood of unwanted air and / or material passing through the sealing mechanism 160.
[0426] In some embodiments, as illustrated in at least Figures 2F and 2G, the cartridge connector 106 may include a pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164. The pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 may be positioned within the pressure sensor recess 156. The pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 may be configured to surround at least a portion of the pressure sensor 129. For example, the pressure sensor 129 may be configured to fit at least partially within the pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164.
[0427] The pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 may define a seal or a gasket. The pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 may extend radially along at least a portion of an outer circumference and / or the perimeter of the pressure sensor recess 156. The pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 may be bonded to the cartridge connector 106 using a primer, e.g., through a co-molding process and / or any other mechanical method. The pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 may include one, two, three, four, or more ribs. In some embodiments, the pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 may help extend the life of the pressure sensor 129 and / or vaporizer body 50. The pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 may help provide an additional seal to ensure that the pressure sensor 129 is properly sealed from the environment and / or the cartridge.
[0428] In some embodiments, the sealing mechanism 160 and / or the pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 may comprise an elastomer, such as silicone (e.g., a durometer, such as 10A to 80A durometer, 70A silicone, and / or food-grade silicone, among other types), TPE, or other elastomers.
[0429] Referring to Figures 2E-2K, the cartridge connector 106 may include one or more sidewall connection features 168. The sidewall connection features 168 may extend downwardly out of opposing sidewalls of the cartridge connector 106. In some embodiments, the sidewall connection features 170 may at least partially couple the cartridge connector 106 to one or more sidewalls of the outer shell 102, for example in a snap-in arrangement. The snap-in arrangement may be used as desired in a plastic-plastic and / or metal-metal interface. Other coupling arrangements are contemplated using spot welding and / or other adhesives.
[0430] Figures 5A-5J illustrate an example of a cartridge connector 106 according to some embodiments of the present invention, with four receptacle contacts 62. The cartridge connector 106 includes the same properties and / or components and / or similar properties and / or components as the cartridge connector illustrated in Figures 1-4, and described herein. As illustrated in Figures 5A-5J, the cartridge connector 106 includes a cartridge connector body 101, four receptacle contacts 62 positioned within the connector slots 136, a sealing mechanism 160 with a ribbed structure and extending around the cartridge connector body 101, a pressure sensor 129, a pressure sensor port 152 and / or a pressure sensor sealing mechanism 164 surrounding the pressure sensor 129, among other components.
[0431] As illustrated in Figures 5A-5J, the cartridge connector 106 includes four receptacle contacts 62. The receptacle contacts 62 may be positioned in pairs. For example, the cartridge connector 106 may include a shaft that bisects the cartridge connector 106 and extends from the front of the cartridge connector 106 to the rear of the cartridge connector 106. In some embodiments, two receptacle contacts 62 may be positioned on one side of the shaft and the other two receptacle contacts 62 may be positioned on the other side of the shaft. Each of the receptacle contacts 62 may be positioned approximately parallel to each other. The receptacle contacts 62 may include a contact portion 122. The contact portion 122 may include a lower portion 128 and an upper portion 130. The upper portion may be positioned closer to a center of the cartridge connector 106 than the lower portions.
[0432] As noted above, a vaporizer 100 according to embodiments of the present invention may include a control system 19 that may use logic (e.g., via software executed by a processor, software executed by a hardware element, circuitry, and / or a combination thereof) to trigger certain operations of the vaporizer 100. These operations may optionally include functions of the heating element, functions of the LED display, and / or functions of other components or sets of components of the vaporizer.
[0433] In some embodiments of the present invention, the control system 19 may control a temperature of a heating element by monitoring a control signal representative of a temperature of the heating element (which may be disposed in a vaporizer cartridge 52 received in a cartridge receptacle 69 of a vaporizer body 50) and modulating current supplied to the heating element based on the monitored control signal. An example of a control signal is a measurement of a resistance of the heating element forming part of the atomizer 26. In some approaches, the resistance of the heating element is measured by the control system via two receptacle contacts 62 of the vaporizer body 50 forming a circuit by respectively connecting the two cartridge contacts 65 of the vaporizer cartridge 52.This circuit may be referred to as a two-point connection since it involves connections between the vaporizer body 50 and the vaporizer cartridge 52 at two separate points (i.e., the connections between each of the two receptacle contacts 62 and its corresponding one of the two cartridge contacts 65). Such an arrangement may supply power to the heating element and thus be used to measure the resistance of the heating element. To measure the resistance, a set of switches may be activated to temporarily stop the supply of electrical power for heating and instead use a circuit including the two-point contacts for resistance measurements. An exemplary hardware configuration capable of performing these functions is described in U.S. Patent Application No. 14 / 581,666.
[0434] In other embodiments of the present invention, a four-point connection arrangement may both supply power to the heating element and measure the resistance of the heating element via two sets of cartridge contacts 65 each of which is connected, when the vaporizer cartridge 52 is inserted into the vaporizer body 50, to at least two receptacle contacts 62. The four-point connection arrangement allows the resistance of the heating element to be measured via a circuit different from the circuit that supplies current to the heating element. For example, depending on a specific configuration of the control system (e.g., firmware running the processor, a series of controllable switches on a printed circuit board, an integrated circuit or multiple integrated circuits, etc.), the control system 19 may cause electric current to flow to heat the heating element from a first receptacle contact 62 (of the two or more contacts) that connects to a first cartridge contact 65 (of the two), through the heating element, and back to ground (or opposite polarity) in the vaporizer body 50 from a second cartridge contact (of the two) leading to a first receptacle contact 62 (of the two or more contacts) connected to the second cartridge contact 65. The second receptacle contacts 62 connected to each of the first and second cartridge contacts 65 may form a second circuit via which the control system may cause a resistance measurement to be made for the heating element. This approach (e.g., a four-point measurement) may be beneficial in measuring resistance on a circuit not including contacts between the control circuit and the heating element so as to reduce the likelihood of contact resistance interference in the heating element resistance measurement. Because a resistance measurement of the type described here is often a voltage measurement required for a given current (using V = IR) as an indirect way of determining resistance R, the measurement is effectively an integral of the resistance across all elements in the circuit. Oxidation or other factors that may be facilitated by applying large current loads across a metal-to-metal connection may result in higher resistance at the metal-to-metal connection. If this contact resistance is part of a circuit through which a heating element makes a resistance measurement, the resistance obtained may not be representative of the resistance (and therefore the temperature) of the heating element.
[0435] A heating control approach according to embodiments of the present invention may include monitoring two moving averages of a measured resistance of the heating element. Among other advantages, this approach may be used to identify whether or not a vaporizer cartridge 52 inserted into a vaporizer body 50 has a heating element that is at a stable reference temperature when inserted. This measurement may be useful for verifying a target heating profile, for example in a vaporizer 100 configured to control a heating element temperature, so as to maintain that heating element temperature below a safe maximum operating temperature. Such a feature may be beneficial in a vaporizer 100, over various other vaporizers currently available, since controlling a heating element temperature simply by limiting an electrical current delivery to a certain expected value to maintain the heating element at a suitable operating temperature during vaporization of a liquid vaporizable material may cause the heating element temperature to increase significantly above the proper operating temperature if a user continues to attempt to operate the vaporizer after the reservoir containing the liquid vaporizable material is sufficiently empty to cause the atomizer 26 to no longer be supplied with an expected amount of liquid vaporizable material to be vaporized. This temperature increase can occur due to the evaporation of the liquid vaporizable material and is a significant source of heat loss from the heating element. Limiting the electrical current delivery to support an operating temperature sufficient to vaporize the liquid vaporizable material in the presence of liquid vaporizable material can lead to much higher heating element temperatures when there is no more liquid vaporizable material to evaporate and thus to absorb and dissipate the generated thermal energy in the form of latent heat of vaporization.
[0436] Some embodiments of the present invention may solve this problem by using a measured heating element resistance, particularly in cases in which the heating element has a well-characterized thermal coefficient of resistance (TCE, which is a coefficient relating to the resistance of the heating element at a current temperature of the heating element). The vaporizer control system measures the resistance of the heating element as discussed elsewhere in this application. The control system need not convert the measured resistance to an actual temperature value but may instead measure or calculate a reference resistance for the heating element when the heating element is assumed to be at an "idle" or unheated temperature.A target resistance of the heater, which may be used as an approximation for the target temperature (where the target resistance of the heater and the target temperature may be related by the heater TCR), may be calculated based on the reference resistance of the heater. For example, the target resistance of the heater may be a fractional increase in resistance over the reference (e.g., 3%, 5%, 10%, etc. depending on the desired target temperature and the specific TCR functions of the heater). It will be understood that while this discussion is focused on using the heater of the vaporizer cartridge atomizer 26 as the component whose resistance is measured, embodiments of the present invention may . also include the use of a resistance measurement of other components positioned as desired in a position in which a representative temperature can be measured, e.g. a separate wiring element, etc.
[0437] Because the target resistance (e.g., of the heating element but also possibly of any other component as noted above) may be a function of the reference resistance, a vaporizer according to embodiments of the present invention may include functions for determining whether or not a stable reference is present. As noted above, by calculating two moving averages of the measured resistance where the two moving averages have different averaging periods (one longer, one shorter), an unstable reference may be detected by noting when the moving averages track each other relatively closely and when they do not, for example, by observing a difference between the moving averages over time. [Fig. 25A] illustrates a graph 2500 with example data at a series of times of these two moving averages. The first curve 2510 in the 2500 chart represents a first moving average with a shorter averaging time and the second curve 2520 represents a first moving average with a longer averaging time. The third curve 2530 represents the difference between the first curve 2510 and the second curve 2530.In the illustrated example in which the heating element of an inserted cartridge was not preheated prior to insertion, the first two curves 2510 and 2520 remain substantially equivalent until activation of the heating element (e.g., by a user taking a puff or by some other user input or factor causing the control system to energize the heating element), at which time the first curve 2510 diverges toward a higher average temperature faster than the second curve 2520 due to the shorter averaging time of the first curve 2510.When heating ceases (e.g. due to the user ending the puff, a fixed time interval causing heating to end, a user interrupting or changing an input, or the control system reacting to any other factor), the first curve 2510 again reacts more quickly than the second curve, causing the first curve 2510 and the second curve 2520 to cross over as the temperature of the atomizer 26 drops, and thus also the resistance of the heating element (or any other component whose resistance is measured as being representative of the heating element temperature).
[0438] The measurement of the resistance of, for example, the heating element may occur upon first insertion of the vaporizer cartridge 52 into the cartridge receptacle 69 of the vaporizer device. This initial measurement may be used as the first control to determine whether or not the vaporizer 100 should enter an active mode in which it can be used to generate an inhalable aerosol. If the measured resistance is outside an expected allowable range, this may indicate that the inserted vaporizer cartridge 52 is not making good electrical contacts with the vaporizer body 50, that a short circuit is occurring somewhere in the heating circuit, or that some other problem is occurring that prevents normal operation. In one example, detection of an out-of-range resistance may indicate an attempt to use a non-standard vaporizer cartridge 52. This determination may be used to trigger an error that may optionally include disabling the vaporizer 100 for a period of time.
[0439] In measuring the resistance, the two moving averages as noted above may be calculated. In an example in which an inserted vaporizer cartridge 52 has recently been used with another vaporizer body 50, the vaporizer cartridge 52 may be inserted in an already heated state. As such, it may be undesirable to calculate the reference resistance as the initial resistance. The two moving averages and the differences between them may be used to identify a transient cooling condition and to correct the reference and thus the target resistance for controlling heat in response to this determination. [Fig. 25B] illustrates a graph 2550 in which the first curve 2510 representing the shorter period moving average trends downward more rapidly than the second curve 2520 representing the longer period moving average. The difference between the first curve 2510 and the second curve 2530 is not temporarily stable when the vaporizer cartridge 52 is first inserted but instead tends downward. The control system or other logic executed by the vaporizer 100 may detect this condition and therefore adjust the reference and target resistances.
[0440] In addition to measuring the difference between the two moving averages of different averaging periods, some embodiments of the present invention may also include tracking a deviation between the two moving averages. Use of the deviation may be beneficial in that it can detect not only the level, but also the amount of variation in a signal, for the purpose of detecting signal stability.
[0441] The arrangements of the vaporizer body 50 according to the present invention (e.g., including arrangements of the two- and four-point connections via the receptacle contacts according to embodiments of the present invention for supplying power to the heating element and for measuring heating element resistance) may be implemented alone or in conjunction with hardware, software, or a combination of hardware and software, including embodiments embodiment of the vaporizing device (e.g., vaporizer body contacts, cartridge contacts, etc.), the vapor control system (which may enable the vaporizing functionality of the vaporizing device) and / or the power management unit, (which includes a heater control and may manage the proper operation of the vapor control system (e.g., by improving power supply management, reducing power demands, providing flexible heater control, reducing the number of separate components thereby reducing variation in performance, and the like)) described and illustrated at least in paragraphs

[0475] below. In other words, the vaporization device 100 including the vaporizer body 50 may use the vapor control system, the current management unit (such as the heater control), the vaporizer body contacts, the cartridge contacts, etc., described and illustrated at least in paragraphs
[0396] -
[0475] below and in at least Figures 31-39, to supply electric current to the heater (e.g., the vaporizer cartridge 52), to measure the resistance (e.g., the heating element, the contact resistance, etc.), or the equivalent thereof.
[0442] Configurations of the receptacle contacts 62 other than those described above (e.g., the receptacle contacts 62 having a different size, shape, material, or morphology) are contemplated. For example, the receptacle contacts 62 may include spring pins providing a fixed or sliding seal to the gasket. Such configurations may prevent the spring pin assembly from allowing unwanted liquids and / or solids that may degrade the performance (e.g., the low resistance electrical connection) of and / or into the spring pin. In embodiments having a fixed seal relative to the gasket, the gasket may deflect and provide some spring force for a better electrical connection between the pin and the cartridge contacts 65 of the vaporizer cartridge 52.
[0443] In some embodiments, the receptacle contacts 62 may comprise molded (e.g., drawn, stamped, curved) sheet metal contacts soldered and / or spot soldered to a flexible printed circuit or rigid printed circuit board such as the primary PCBA 512 and / or the secondary PCBA 512A.
[0444] In some embodiments, the receptacle contacts 62 may include insert-molded formed metal spring contacts. The formed cartridge contact spring contacts or pins may be desirable to provide a more robust seal (e.g., to limit or prevent vaporizable material from passing into the circuitry / battery region).
[0445] In some embodiments, the receptacle contacts 62 may include insert-molded pins and / or pin receptacles with formed cartridge connection spring contacts that are welded (spot or laser), soldered, or compressed after injection molding. On the airless path side of the joint, the pins (or pin receptacles) may be connected via cables, leaf springs, spring contacts, a flexible printed circuit, pin receptacles, and / or other connectors (or pins) for circuit control and measurement. A conductor may be coupled to the pins by soldering, welding (spot or laser), press-fitting, and / or spring contact connection, among other coupling methods.
[0446] In some embodiments, the receptacle contacts 62 may include rigid pins and / or formed metal contacts that, when mounted on the seal, rely to some extent on the deflection of the seal to provide spring force and / or a reliable connection with the vaporizer cartridge 52. On the airless path side of the seal, the pins may be connected to the control and measurement circuits by soldering, welding (spot or laser), press fit, and / or spring contact connection, among other coupling methods.
[0447] In some embodiments, the receptacle contacts 62 may include a connection to the vaporizer cartridge 52 via a molded or turned metal part (e.g., sheet metal or "pin" respectively) or an assembly of metal parts. The spring contacts or spring contact assemblies may be coupled to the secondary PCBA 512A or the primary PCBA 512 with traces leading to the control circuitry via spring force, spot welding, laser welding, soldering, interference fit, or a geometric shape of a retaining ring and / or the equivalent thereof.
[0448] In some embodiments, spring force and / or compatibility may be provided via one or more of: metal (e.g., coil spring(s) or leaf spring(s), elastomeric material (e.g., silicone), and / or plastic, among others. The spring force may ensure a secure electrical connection. The compatibility may help account for tolerance buildups of the assembly.
[0449] In some embodiments, the spring contacts may be friction contacts. For example, one or more contacts in each pair of device / cartridge mating contacts may have sliding and / or translating electrical contact points when the vaporizer cartridge 52 is inserted into the vaporizer body 50. The friction contacts may provide a more reliable connection. For example, if the cartridge contacts 65 of the vaporizer cartridge 52 have oxidation or residual material that may prevent or impede contact with the receptacle contacts 62, the rubbing contacts may rub against a surface of the cartridge contacts 65 upon insertion of the vaporizer cartridge 52 into the vaporizer body 50. The rubbing of the surface of the cartridge contacts 65 would make it more likely that the receptacle contacts 62 will make good contact with the cartridge contacts 65 by reducing or preventing unwanted material from being in the contact area.

The flap portion 676 includes a first side leg 678, a second side leg 680, and a center leg 682, among other components. The first and second side legs 678, 680 together form a holding leg 695 which surrounds the central leg 682. The holding leg 695 is positioned in a slot formed between the upwardly extending members 673.
[0478] Referring to Figures 9A-9L, the cartridge connector 606 also includes one or more sidewall connection features 668 that include an opening 699A for receiving a corresponding protrusion 699B that extends out of the outer shell 602 and / or any other component of the vaporizer body 650, such as the framework 504. The sidewall connection features 668 are the same as or similar to the sidewall connection features 668 illustrated in Figures 8A-8H described above.
[0479] Figures 9A-9L illustrate an exemplary cartridge connector 9A-9L having a sealing mechanism 660. The sealing mechanism 660 includes a seal or gasket that extends around the cartridge connector body 601. The seal or gasket may define a unique ribbed structure. The seal or gasket may be integrally molded with and / or coupled to a pressure sensor sealing mechanism 664 that is configured to extend around at least a portion of a pressure sensor 629. The seal or gasket may be connected to the pressure sensor sealing mechanism 664 by a sealing connection arm 660A that wraps around a sidewall of the cartridge connector body 601.
[0480] The cartridge connector 606 may include one or more features that allow the cartridge connector 606 to be more easily cleaned using a cleaning apparatus. For example, the cartridge connector 606 includes a wall extension 601A that extends out of an upper portion of the cartridge connector body 601. The wall extension 601A may have an “H-shape” or other shape with a central cutout to surround the pressure sensor port and extend upward from the connector slots 636 to surround at least a portion of the receptacle contacts 662. The wall extension 601A protects the receptacle contacts 662 at least in part by making it more difficult for the cleaning apparatus to snag on a receptacle contact 662 and / or deform a receptacle contact 662.The receptacle contacts 662 may include an upper portion that is elongated to limit deformation caused by a cleaning device or other apparatus.
[0481] [Fig.9J] illustrates an example cartridge connector 606 coupled to the rigid flex element 510. In the example illustrated in [Fig.9J], the rigid flex element 510 is coupled to a secondary printed circuit board (e.g., a PCBA) or a capsule interface board 512A at a first end 510A and is configured to be coupled to the primary PCBA 512 via a second end 510B of the flex element 510. The rigid flex element 510 may be coupled to the primary PCBA 512 and / or the secondary PCBA 512A by soldering, press-fitting, and / or a snap-in arrangement (see Figures 9M-9N). For example, the primary PCBA 512 and / or the secondary PCBA 512A may be pressed and / or snapped onto the flex element 510 and / or a portion of the battery to establish an electrical connection. In some embodiments, the primary PCBA 512 and / or the secondary PCBA 512A may alternatively or additionally be soldered to the flex element or a portion of the stack. As illustrated, the secondary PCBA 512A is nested against the bottom surface of the cartridge connector 606 and contacts the bottom of the receptacle contacts 662 configured to contact the cartridge 52. This configuration allows the primary PCBA 512 to remotely control the power supply supplied from the current supply source 508 to the receptacle contacts 662 via the secondary PCBA 512A. In some embodiments, the current supply source 508, the primary PCBA 512, and / or the secondary PCBA 512A include one or more thermal protection features. The thermal protection functions may limit or prevent the current supply source 508 from charging or discharging current, for example when the thermal protection functions detect that the current supply source 508 has a temperature that is greater than or equal to an upper threshold and / or less than or equal to a lower threshold.
[0482] Positioning the connection between the power supply source 508 and the PCB A near the receptacle contacts 662 at the first end 510A of the flex element 510 keeps the path between the power supply source 508 and the receptacle contacts 662 short. The short power supply path can increase the heating efficiency of the vaporization device and allow more puffs to be taken by the user per power supply charge. The short power supply path allows shorter traces to be used in the connection between the power supply source 508 and the receptacle contacts 662, which reduces resistance and limits heating losses.
[0483] Figures 9K-9L illustrate another example of a secondary PCBA 512A that is configured to be separately coupled to the cartridge connector 606, as described in more detail below. As shown in [Fig. 9K], the rigid flex element 510 is coupled to the power supply source 508 and includes a first end 510A configured to be coupled to the secondary PCBA 512A and a second end 510B configured to be coupled to the primary PCBA 512. The power supply source 508 includes one or more connectors to enable the power supply source 508 to be connected to a portion of the flex element 510 leading to the second end 510B and to a portion of the flex element coupled to the second end 510B.
[0484] The secondary PCBA 512A illustrated in [Fig.9L] includes slots 511 that correspond to the coupling portions of each of the receptacle contacts 662. The secondary PCBA 512A may be nested against the bottom surface of the cartridge connector 606 and contact the coupling portions of the receptacle contacts 662. This configuration allows the primary PCBA 512 to remotely control the supply of current from the power supply source 508 to the receptacle contacts 662 via the secondary PCBA 512A. Positioning the connection between the power supply source 508 and the secondary PCBA 512A near the receptacle contacts 662 keeps the path between the power supply source 508 and the receptacle contacts 662 short. The short power source path can increase the heating efficiency of the vaporizing device and allow the user to take a greater number of puffs per power source charge. The short power source path allows for shorter traces to be used in the connection between the power source 508 and the receptacle contacts 662, which reduces resistance and limits heating losses.
[0485] Figures 26A-26F illustrate another example of a cartridge connector 906 according to certain embodiments of the present invention. The cartridge connector Cartridge 906 optionally includes one or more properties and / or components identical and / or similar to cartridge connectors 106, 206, 306, 406, 606 illustrated in Figures 1-9L and described herein. As illustrated in Figures 26A-26F, the cartridge connector 906 includes a cartridge connector body 901, four receptacle contacts 962 positioned within the connector slots 936, a sealing mechanism 960, a pressure sensor port, a retention feature 920, and a sidewall connection feature 968 that are respectively the same and / or similar to the cartridge connector including the cartridge connector body, the receptacle contacts positioned within the connector slots, the sealing mechanism, the pressure sensor, the pressure sensor port, the retention feature, and the sidewall connection feature illustrated in Figures 1-9L and described herein.
[0486] The retaining features 920 illustrated in Figures 26A-26F may include the same and / or similar properties and / or components as the retaining features 220, 320, 420, 620 illustrated in Figures 6A-9L and described herein. For example, the retaining features 920 include a longitudinal member 972, a side member 974, and a flap portion 976. The longitudinal member 972 provides a spring force to securely attach the cartridge connector 906 to the outer shell of the vaporizer body 950. The flap portion 976 includes a first side leg 978, a second side leg 980, and a center leg 982, among other components. The first and second side legs 978, 980 together form a holding leg 995 which surrounds the central leg 982. The holding leg 995 is positioned in a slot formed between the upwardly extending members 973.
[0487] Referring to Figures 26A-26F, the cartridge connector 906 also includes one or more sidewall connection features 968 that include an opening 999A for receiving a corresponding protrusion 999B that extends out of the outer shell 902 and / or any other component of the vaporizer body 950, such as the framework 504. The sidewall connection features 968 are the same as or similar to the sidewall connection features illustrated in Figures 8A-9L described above.
[0488] Figures 26A-26F illustrate an exemplary cartridge connector having a sealing mechanism 960. The sealing mechanism 960 includes a seal or gasket that extends around the cartridge connector body 901. The seal or gasket may define a unique ribbed structure. The seal or gasket may be integrally molded with and / or coupled to a pressure sensor sealing mechanism 964 that is configured to extend around at least a portion of a pressure sensor 929. The seal or gasket may be connected to the pressure sensor sealing mechanism 964 by a sealing connection arm 960A which wraps around a side wall of the cartridge connector body 901.
[0489] The cartridge connector 906 may include one or more features that allow the cartridge connector 906 to be more easily cleaned using a cleaning apparatus. For example, the cartridge connector 906 includes a wall extension 901A that extends out of an upper portion of the cartridge connector body 901. The wall extension 901A may have an "H-shape" or other shape with a central cutout to surround the pressure sensor port and extend upward from the connector slots 936 to surround at least a portion of the receptacle contacts 962. The wall extension 901A protects the receptacle contacts 962 at least in part by making it more difficult for the cleaning apparatus to snag on a receptacle contact 962 and / or deform a receptacle contact 962.The receptacle contacts 962 may include an upper portion that is elongated to limit deformation caused by a cleaning device or other device.
[0490] The cartridge connector 906 may include a receptacle contact cover 945. The receptacle contact cover 945 may surround at least a portion of the receptacle contacts 962, such as a loose end of the receptacle contacts 962, to help limit or prevent damage to the receptacle contacts 962. For example, the receptacle contact cover 945 may include one or more (e.g., four or more) openings 945A, each of which surrounds a corresponding receptacle contact 962. The interior walls of each opening may help reduce damage to the receptacle contacts 962, for example, by a cleaning apparatus, by, for example, limiting the ability of the cleaning apparatus to enter the opening 945A and / or catch on the loose end of the receptacle contacts 962.The receptacle contact cover 945 may help limit or prevent access or flexing of the loose end of the receptacle contacts 962 by the cleaning apparatus.
[0491] The receptacle contact cover 945 may be glued, snapped, molded, and / or pressed into an interference fit within the cartridge connector body 901, among other assembly means.
[0492] Figures 27A-27H illustrate another example of a cartridge connector 2706 according to certain embodiments of the present invention. The cartridge connector 2706 optionally includes one or more properties and / or components identical and / or similar to the cartridge connectors 106, 206, 306, 406, 606, 906 illustrated in Figures 1-9L and 26A-26F and described herein. As illustrated in Figures 27A-27H, the cartridge connector 2706 includes a cartridge connector body 2701, four receptacle contacts 2762 positioned within the slots connector 2736, a sealing mechanism 2760, a pressure sensor port, a retention feature 2720 and a sidewall connection feature 2768 which are respectively the same and / or similar to the cartridge connector comprising the cartridge connector body, the receptacle contacts positioned within the connector slots, the sealing mechanism, the pressure sensor, the pressure sensor port, the retention feature and the sidewall connection feature illustrated in Figures 1-9L and 26A-26F and described herein.
[0493] The retaining features 2720 illustrated in Figures 27A-2GF may include the same and / or similar properties and / or components as the retaining features 220, 320, 420, 620, 920 illustrated in Figures 6A-9L and 26A-26F and described herein. For example, the retaining features 2720 include a longitudinal member 2772, a side member 2774, and a flap portion 2776. The longitudinal member 2772 provides a spring force to securely attach the cartridge connector 2706 to the outer shell of the vaporizer body 2750. The flap portion 2776 includes a first side leg 2778, a second side leg 2780, and a center leg 2782, among other components. The first and second side legs 2778, 2780 together form a holding leg 2795 that surrounds the central leg 2782. The holding leg 2795 is positioned in a slot formed between the upwardly extending members 2773.
[0494] Referring to Figures 27A-27H, the cartridge connector 2706 also includes one or more sidewall connection features 2768 that include an opening 2799A for receiving a corresponding protrusion 2799B that extends from the outer shell 2702 and / or any other component of the vaporizer body 2750, e.g., the frame 504. The sidewall connection features 2768 are the same or similar to the sidewall connection features illustrated in Figures 8A-9L and 26A-26F described above.
[0495] Figures 27A-27H illustrate an exemplary cartridge connector having a sealing mechanism 2760. The sealing mechanism 2760 includes a seal or gasket that extends around the cartridge connector body 2701. The seal or gasket may define a unique ribbed structure. The seal or gasket may be integrally molded with and / or coupled to a pressure sensor sealing mechanism 2764 that is configured to extend around at least a portion of a pressure sensor 2729. The seal or gasket may be connected to the pressure sensor sealing mechanism 2764 by a sealing connection arm 2760A that wraps around a sidewall of the cartridge connector body 2701. The cartridge connector body 2701 may include a slot 2729A for securely attaching the pressure sensor 2729. The slot 2729A may help reduce the likelihood of material accumulating on the pressure sensor 2729 and / or obstructing the air path coupled to the pressure sensor 2729.
[0496] The pressure sensor sealing mechanism 2764 may include one or more (e.g., two, three, four, etc.) anchors 2764A that assist in securely attaching the pressure sensor sealing mechanism 2764 to the cartridge connector body 2701. The anchors 2764A may be clamped, securely mechanically attached, and / or press-fitted into the cartridge connector body 2701, among other means of secure attachment. The anchors 2764A provide additional surface area providing the ability to contact and securely attach the pressure sensor sealing mechanism 2764 to the cartridge connector body 2701.
[0497] The cartridge connector 2706 may include one or more features that allow for easier cleaning of the cartridge connector 2706 using a cleaning apparatus. For example, the cartridge connector 2706 includes a wall extension 2701A that extends from an upper portion of the cartridge connector body 2701. The wall extension 2701A may have an "H-shape" or other shape with a central cutout to surround the pressure sensor port and extend upward from the connector slots 2736 to surround at least a portion of the receptacle contacts 2762. The wall extension 2701A protects the receptacle contacts 2762 at least in part by making it more difficult for the cleaning apparatus to catch on a receptacle contact 2762 and / or deform a receptacle contact 2762.
[0498] The receptacle contacts 2762 may include an upper portion that is elongated to limit deformation caused by a cleaning appliance or other apparatus. [Fig. 27G] illustrates a cross-sectional side view of the cartridge connector 2706 according to embodiments of the present invention. As illustrated, an end portion 2762A of the receptacle contacts 2762 may be configured to contact an interior surface 2701A of the cartridge connector body 2701, for example when a force is applied to the receptacle contacts 2762 (e.g., when a vaporizer cartridge is connected to the vaporizer body). Contact between the end portion 2762A of the receptacle contacts 2762 and the interior surface 2701 may create redundancy in forces (e.g., one or more spring forces). For example, a force applied to the receptacle contacts 2762, such as by contact with the vaporizer cartridge, causes a spring force to act in the opposite direction of the force to push on the vaporizer cartridge and maintain contact between the receptacle contacts 2762 and the vaporizer cartridge. The contact between the part . end surface 2762A and the inner surface 2701 when a force is applied, e.g., when the vaporizer cartridge is in contact with the receptacle contacts 2762, causes a second force (e.g., a normal force) to be applied in the opposite direction to the force. The second force may further securely attach and maintain contact between the receptacle contacts 2762 and the vaporizer cartridge in operation to ensure that the receptacle contacts 2762 and the cartridge contacts 65 communicate well in operation. The second force may help to securely attach and maintain contact between the receptacle contacts 2762 and the vaporizer cartridge.
[0499] In some embodiments, the receptacle contacts 2762 have a width that helps reduce the stress on the receptacle contacts 2762 and may help increase the magnitude of the spring force and / or the second force. Increasing the magnitude of the spring force and / or the second force helps securely attach the receptacle contacts 2762 to the vaporizer cartridge in operation and maintain communication between the receptacle contacts 2762 and the vaporizer cartridge. The width of the receptacle contacts 2762 may alternatively or additionally help limit or prevent damage to the receptacle contacts 2762, for example, from a cleaning apparatus. For example, an increased width of the receptacle contacts 2762 may limit or prevent the cleaning apparatus from passing through the sides of the receptacle contacts, thereby reducing the likelihood that the cleaning apparatus will bend or even damage the receptacle contacts.
[0500] The cartridge connector 2706 may also include a receptacle contact cover 2745. The receptacle contact cover 2745 may surround at least a portion of the receptacle contacts 2762, e.g., a loose end of the receptacle contacts 2762, to help limit or prevent damage to the receptacle contacts 2762. For example, the receptacle contact cover 2745 may include one or more (e.g., four or more) openings 2745A, each of which surrounds a corresponding receptacle contact 2762. The interior walls of each opening may help reduce damage to the receptacle contacts 2762, e.g., from a cleaning apparatus, e.g., by limiting the possibility of the cleaning apparatus entering the opening 2745A and / or catching on the loose end of the receptacle contacts 2762.The receptacle contact cover 2745 may help to limit or prevent the loose end of the receptacle contacts 2762 from being directly reached or bent by the cleaning apparatus.
[0501] The receptacle contact cover 2745 may be glued, snapped, molded, and / or pressed into an interference fit within the cartridge connector body 2701, among other things. assembly means. For example, as illustrated, the receptacle contact cover 2745 may be coupled to the cartridge connector body 2701 via one or more connecting features 2717A, e.g., snap hooks that may be coupled to corresponding features 2717B, e.g., the anti-shake features, so as to securely attach the receptacle contact cover 2745 to the cartridge connector body 2701. The anti-shake features 2717B help prevent the receptacle contact cover 2745 from being separated from the cartridge connector body 2701.
[0502] Figures 10A-12C illustrate an exemplary cap module 502 according to embodiments of the present invention. The cap module 502 defines a modular component that can be coupled to the framework 504. The cap module 502 includes a cap 520, an antenna support 522, a flexible cable 528, a splitter 538, a coaxial cable 532, a PSA 530, a magnet 536 for magnetically connecting to an external power supply, and a light source 534 such as an LED 534.

As illustrated in at least Figures 10A-12C, the charging contacts 524 and the data pins 526 may have a circular shape. Charging contacts 524 and / or the data pins 526 having other shapes are also contemplated. In some embodiments, the charging contacts 524 and the data pins 526 have the same shape (see Figures 13A-13C, 13E-13F). In some embodiments, the charging contacts 524 and the data pins 526 have different shapes and / or sizes (see Figures 10A-12C and 13D). For example, Figures 13A-13F illustrate examples of vaporizer bodies 50 having cap modules 502.The charging contacts 524 may have a square shape, a square shape with rounded corners (see [Fig. 13A]), an oval shape (see [Fig. 13B]), a rounded rectangle shape (see [Fig. 13C]), a semicircle shape (see [Fig. 13D]), and / or a circle shape (see Figures 13E, 13F), among others. The data pins 526 may have a square shape, a square shape with rounded corners. rounded corners (see Figures 13A, 13D), an oval shape (see [Fig.l3B]), a rounded rectangle shape (see [Fig.l3C]), a semicircle shape and / or a circle shape (see Figures 13E, 13F), among others.
[0505] Referring to Figures 10A-12C, the cap 520 may include one or more charging contact openings 525 receiving the corresponding charging contacts 524 and one or more data pin openings 527 receiving the corresponding data pins 526, upon assembly. The outer end surface of the charging contacts 524 and / or data pins 526 may be approximately aligned with an outer surface 523 of the cap 520. In some embodiments, upon assembly, the outer end surface of the charging contacts 524 and / or data pins 526 is recessed and / or protrudes relative to the outer surface 523 of the cap 520.
[0506] The cap 520 may include a cutout region 535 on a front side of the cap 520. The cutout region may be configured to surround at least a portion of the light source 534.
[0507] The separator 538 is configured to house at least a portion of the internal components of the cap module 502. For example, the separator 538 may surround and / or securely secure at least a portion of the internal components of the cap module 502. Figure 12 illustrates an exemplary separator 538 housing at least a portion of the internal components of the cap module 502. As shown in Figure 12, the cap 520 may be positioned over one end of the separator 538 to securely secure the internal components within the separator 538. Figures 11 and 11B illustrate an exemplary cap module 502 in which the cap 520 is illustrated as transparent to represent certain internal components of the cap module 502.
[0508] The separator 538 may include coupling recesses 548 that can securely attach the cap 520 to the separator 538. The coupling recesses 548 may be an adhesive, e.g., glue, to attach the cap 520 to the separator 538. The coupling recesses 548 provide a strong bond between the cap 520 and the separator. The adhesive may adhere to the surfaces of the coupling recesses 548 to provide multiple attachment surfaces and strengthen the bond between the cap 520 and the separator 538.
[0509] The separator 538 may include adhesive channels 548A that may securely attach the cap module 502 to the outer shell 102, as described below. The adhesive channels 548A may receive an adhesive, e.g., glue, to secure the cap module 502 to the outer shell 102. The adhesive may adhere to the surfaces of the adhesive channels 548A to provide multiple attachment surfaces and to strengthen the bond between the cap 520 and the outer shell 102.
[0510] The splitter 538 may include one or more light source receiving slots 552. The light source receiving slots 552 may be configured to receive at least a portion of the light source 534 so as to couple the light source 534 to the splitter 538. The light source 534 and the splitter 538 may be coupled via a snap-in arrangement and / or the light source 534 and the splitter 538 may be secured to each other via an adhesive, a chemical bonding method, or a mechanical bonding method.
[0511] The separator 538 may also include framework attachment features 554. The framework attachment features 554 may be configured to receive at least a portion of the framework 504, for example, one or more of the cap module connection features 550. The light source 534 and the cap module connection features 550 may be coupled via a snap-in arrangement and / or the cap module connection features 550 and the separator 538 may be attached to each other via an adhesive, a chemical bonding method, or a mechanical bonding method.
[0512] Referring to Figures 10A-12C, the one or more lighting devices (e.g., light source 534) may include a light pipe 556 and a light source attachment feature 558. The light source attachment feature 558 may include one or more flaps that may be configured to be inserted into the light source receiving slots 552. The light source receiving slots 552 may be configured to separate the light emission from the light pipe 556 from the light source 534. As mentioned above, the light source attachment feature 538 and the separator 538 may be coupled via a snap-in arrangement and / or the light source attachment feature 538 and the separator 538 may be attached to each other via an adhesive, a chemical bonding method, or a mechanical bonding method.
[0513] The light pipe 556 may include one or more LEDs, e.g., five LEDs. The light pipe 556 may be at least partially or fully illuminated to provide an indicator to the user. For example, the light source 534 may be configured to provide a variety of indicators to the user, e.g., a charge level, a charge status of the battery 508, a puff taken, a need to recharge the vaporizing device, among other indicators. The light source 534 may provide the indicators in a wide variety of patterns, e.g., animations and / or brightness levels.
[0514] For example, in some embodiments of the present invention, the control system 19 may drive one or more lighting devices 534 on the vaporizer 100 (and in some examples on the vaporizer body 50) to illuminate and dim one or more individually controllable lighting devices in various patterns, where the illumination, temporal, and / or spatial pattern may indicate a certain state, transition between states, condition, or the like for the vaporizer 100. According to some embodiments of the present invention, a vaporizer 100 may have one or more (and in one example 4 or 5) lighting devices arranged in a pattern (e.g., a line, square, rectangle, circle, triangle, pill shape, etc.).In some embodiments of the present invention, the lighting device(s) may be or include one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs).
[0515] In some embodiments, the light source includes at least two lighting devices. In some embodiments, each of the at least two lighting devices includes at least one LED. In some embodiments, the light source includes at least five lighting devices. In some embodiments, the vaporizer includes an opening through which the light source is visible. In some embodiments, the opening includes a pill shape, as noted above. For example, the opening may include a first side, a second side approximately parallel to the first side, a third side may extend between the first side and the second side, and a fourth side may extend between the first side and the second side. Each of the first side and the second side may be longer than each of the third side and the fourth side.In some embodiments, the third and fourth sides may be rounded. In some embodiments, each of the at least two lighting devices is separate from the other.
[0516] In one example according to embodiments of the present invention, the control system 19 may access a library of lighting patterns (e.g., firmware, other code, or the equivalent thereof) to determine how to adjust the brightness of one or more lighting devices positioned on the vaporizer 100 so as to make it visible to a user of the vaporizer 100. The library of lighting patterns may include a list of target brightness and / or color values to be used to manage transitions of one or more lighting devices over a period of time. Changing a series of target brightness and / or color values may result in the creation of an animation profile for a set of lighting devices.
[0517] As an example of the above, a visible "spot" may be displayed on the lighting device(s) when a vaporizer cartridge is inserted into a cartridge receptacle 69 of a vaporizer body 50. The "spot" may be created by the following sequence of operations: first, a transition to zero (or any other reduced level of) brightness or to a starting color value may occur, followed by a transition to 100% brightness (or any other brightness or color value) over an increasing period of time (e.g. (0.1 seconds)) and then followed by a transition back to zero (or any other reduced level of) brightness or to any starting color value over a decreasing period of time (e.g. 0.1 seconds) which need not be the same period of time as the increasing period of time.
[0518] Some embodiments of the present invention relate to an approach to manipulating such transitions where a second transition or "animation" to be displayed by the lighting device(s) is triggered while a first transition or animation is in progress.
[0519] A few options according to the present invention may occur in this case, depending on whether it is the transition or animation that is being used (e.g., the first transition or animation) and what the requested new transition or animation (e.g., the second transition or animation) requires. In one option, the first transition or animation may be paused as is upon receipt of a command for the second first transition or animation, or some other detected triggering event, which triggers the second transition or animation. The second transition or animation may be executed followed by a resumption of the first transition or animation where it was paused. In another option, the first transition or animation may be stopped upon receipt of a command for (e.g., some triggering event causing the) second transition or animation. The second transition or animation may be executed, but when the second transition or animation completes, the remainder of the first transition or animation is canceled instead of continuing where it left off. In yet another option, upon receiving a command from (e.g., some trigger event triggering the) second transition or animation, execution of the second transition or animation may be postponed until the first transition or animation completes, and then the second transition or animation executes. In yet another option, the second transition or animation may be overlaid if the remainder of the first transition or animation is running concurrently (e.g., the first transition or animation may continue but the brightness or color changes specified by the second transition or animation may be run in addition to the brightness or color changes specified by the first transition or animation continuing with the portion of the first transition or animation at which the second transition or animation was triggered. In yet another option, if a command (e.g., certain events of . triggering a) second transition or animation occurs while a first transition or animation is in progress, the second transition or animation can be ignored. In other words, the control system can refuse or ignore commands or triggers for a new transition or animation until the end of a transition or animation already in progress.
[0520] In some examples, when a first transition or animation is interrupted by a second transition or animation, the current value of each lighting device (e.g., an LED, etc.) may dim slightly from the starting value required for the second transition or animation for a certain (e.g., short) period of time, and then return to the first transition or animation (if applicable) to handle the option of handling two overlapping requested or triggered transitions or animations.
[0521] To display the lighting options of one or more lighting devices, the light pipe 556 may include an outwardly facing portion of the light source 534. As mentioned above, the outwardly facing portion of the light pipe 556 may have a variety of shapes, sizes, and configurations. For example, as illustrated in Figures 10A-12C, the light pipe 556 of the light source 534 may have a rectangular shape. Figures 13A-13F illustrate examples of vaporizer bodies 50 having light sources 534 in a wide variety of configurations. For example, the outwardly facing portion of the light pipe 556 (and / or the opening in the vaporizer body) of the light sources 534 may have an oval or pill shape (see Figures 13A-13D, 13F), a trapezoidal shape (see [Fig. 13E]), a square shape, or a circular shape, among other shapes. In some embodiments, the outwardly facing portion of the light pipe 556 of the light source 534 is positioned to be aligned with the outer surface of the cap 520, for example in the cutout region 535 and / or the outer shell 102 (see Figures 10A-12C, 13A-13B) or is positioned recessed relative to the outer surface of the cap 520 and / or the outer shell 102 (see Figures 13C-13E, 13F). In some configurations, as illustrated in Figures 13C and 13D, the outwardly facing portion of the light pipe 556 may extend inwardly toward a center of the cap module 502. The outwardly facing portion of the light pipe 556 may also include various widths. For example, the light pipe 556 may have a width of 0.45mm, among other widths.
[0522] In some embodiments (not shown), the light pipe 556 may comprise separate segments rather than a unitary body. Each segment may comprise a separate LED or other light source.
[0523] Figures 29A-29D illustrate an exemplary light pipe 556 according to embodiments of the present invention that may be implemented in the vaporization device described herein. The light pipe 556 may include an outward-facing portion 556A coupled to a back panel 556B. As noted above, the light pipe 556 may also include one or more LEDs positioned on and / or coupled to the outward-facing portion 556A. The light pipe 556 may include a divider 556C that separates one or more of the LEDs on the outward-facing portion 556A (see [Fig. 29B]). In some embodiments, at least a portion of the LEDs, divider 556C, and / or back panel 556B may be visible upon assembly with the vaporization device.
[0524] The light pipe 556 may include a tapered portion 557 that connects the back panel 556B to the outward-facing portion 556A. The tapered portion 557 extending from the back panel 556B to the outward-facing portion 556A may help limit the visibility of light defects, e.g., rim lighting and / or dark edges from the exterior, thereby providing a well-defined and uniform lit appearance.
[0525] Referring to [Fig. 12B], the cap module 502 includes the antenna support 522. The antenna support 522 includes an antenna 522A while minimizing the amount of material (e.g., plastic) that supports the antenna. The antenna support 522 advantageously isolates the antenna 522A from the metal housing for efficient RF radiation. For example, the antenna support 522 helps decouple the charging contacts 524 from the PCBA 512 when the charging contacts 524 interfere with antenna transmissions due to inductive and passive coupling between the charging contacts 524 and the antenna support 522 and the antenna 522A via the flex element 528 of the PCBA 512. In addition, the antenna support 522 helps maintain the position of the magnet 536 away from the charging contacts 524 and separate from the antenna 522A.The antenna mount 522 may also support a shortening leg or grounding clip as explained below to allow the antenna 522A to be adjusted to the vaporizer body 50. The antenna mount 522 in conjunction with the antenna 522A and / or the positioning of the components of the cap module 502 therefore improves performance and can improve the radiation efficiency of the antenna 522A by at least approximately 15-20% or more. Such radiation efficiency can allow wireless communication with an external device positioned up to 25 feet (7.52 meters) or beyond the vaporizer body 50.
[0526] The antenna mount 522 may comprise various materials. For example, the antenna mount 522 may comprise an injection-molded plastic and may comprise a portion that is laser etched and / or gold plated, e.g., around an outer diameter of the antenna support 522. The antenna support 522 may include a radiating element, e.g., an antenna 522A. The antenna 522A may be formed at least in part by the laser etched pattern and a corresponding grating. The antenna 522A may wrap around an outer perimeter of the interior components of the vaporizer body 50. The perimeter of the vaporizer body 50 provides a path length (e.g., 2.4 GHz wavelength) for tuning the antenna.
[0527] The antenna 522A of the antenna mount 522 includes a shortening leg. The shortening leg may directly connect the outer shell 102 to a surface of the antenna mount 522 via a grounding material (e.g., a grounding clip). Coupling the shortening leg of the antenna 522A to the outer shell 102 may allow inductive and capacitive coupling of the antenna 522A (which controls the impedance presented to the antenna) with the outer shell 102 to be controlled proximate to the attachment of the coaxial cable 532.
[0528] As shown in [Fig.l2B], the coaxial cable 532 may be coupled to the antenna mount 522. The coaxial cable 532 excites the antenna 522A with RF energy from the main control system. The antenna mount 522 that secures the coaxial cable 532 allows the coaxial cable 532 to be coupled to the antenna 522A and improves the structural integrity of the wired connection between the coaxial cable 532 and the antenna mount 522. The grounding clip, in conjunction with the coaxial cable 532, allows the antenna mount 522 or the antenna 522A to be tested independently of or in conjunction with other components of the vaporizer body 50. Such configurations facilitate improved manufacturing efficiency and more uniform RF radiation performance. As shown in [Fig.l2B], the charging contacts 524 are positioned adjacent to the antenna 522A on the antenna support 522.The antenna 522A may therefore be coupled to the charging contacts 524 and / or the data pins 526 inductively and / or capacitively. The inductive and / or capacitive coupling occurs due to the orientation and proximity of the data pins 526 and / or the charging contacts 524 to the antenna.
[0529] The data pins 526 and / or the charging contacts 524 may include a series filter circuit (e.g., a series and / or parallel inductive and / or capacitive element) to decouple and / or limit backcoupling of RF radiation through the flex element into the main PCBA 512. In some embodiments, the series filter circuit minimizes the coupling effect of RF energy then from the antenna 522A to the internal components of the vaporizer body 50 which may undesirably reduce the RF efficiency and / or reduce the performance of the vaporizer body 50.
[0530] As shown in [Fig.l2B], the magnet 536 may be positioned adjacent to and / or interface with the antenna support 522. The magnet 536 may be configured to magnetically and releasably couple the vaporizer body 50 to an external charging device.
[0531] Figures 14A-14F illustrate an exemplary cap module 702 according to some embodiments of the present invention. The cap module 702 includes properties and / or components identical and / or similar to the cap module 502 illustrated in Figures 10A-12C and described herein. As illustrated in Figures 14A-14F, the cap module 702 includes a cap 720, a splitter 738, a light source 734, an antenna support, a flexible cable, a coaxial cable, a PSA, and a magnet that are respectively identical or similar to the cap module 502 including the cap, splitter 738, light source, antenna support, flexible cable, coaxial cable, PSA, and magnet illustrated in Figures 10A-13F and described herein. In the example of the cap module 702 illustrated in Figures 14A-14F, the outwardly facing portion of the light pipe 756 of the light source 534 is an oval shape. The charging contact and data pin openings 725, 727 and the charging contacts and data pins 724, 726 have the same shape (e.g., circular) and are evenly spaced.
[0532] As illustrated in Figures 14A-14F, the splitter 738 may include a single light source receiving slot 752. The light source 734 and the splitter 738 may be coupled via a snap-in arrangement and / or the light source 734 and the splitter 738 may be secured to each other via an adhesive, a chemical bonding method, or a mechanical bonding method. The light source 734 may include reflective surfaces for separating light emitted via the light pipe 756.
[0533] The separator 738 may include adhesive channels 748 that may securely attach the cap module 702 to the outer shell 102, as described below. The adhesive channels 748 may receive an adhesive, e.g., glue, to attach the cap module 702 to the outer shell 102. The adhesive may adhere to the surfaces of the adhesive channels 748 to provide multiple attachment surfaces and strengthen the bond between the cap 520 and the outer shell 102.
[0534] [Fig. 15] illustrates an exemplary method 800 of assembling a vaporization device according to embodiments of the present invention. The method 800 may include assembling certain separately assembled modular components, for example, the cap module 502, 702 and the cartridge connector 406, 606. Assembling the modular components may provide a simpler and more efficient assembly method. For example, the frame subassembly 501 may be assembled and coupled to the outer shell at a later time. Even if the Figures 16A-21A, 22, 23A, and 24A illustrate an exemplary assembled vaporizer body 450, other components from other exemplary vaporizer bodies may be assembled in the same or similar manner.
[0535] At 801, certain electrical components may be tested prior to assembling the components into the modularized components of the vaporizer body 50.
[0536] For example, the main PCBA 512 may be tested. The main PCBA 512 may include a heating measurement circuit, a microcontroller system, a user interface circuit, an accelerometer, and load circuitry. In some embodiments, a PCB As panel 512 comprising two or more PCBAs 512 is tested to determine the performance level of each of the PCBAs before assembling the PCBAs 512 into the cap module 502. In some embodiments, the heating measurement circuit may be tested by load simulation. For example, the circuit may be calibrated to ensure correlative resistance measurements at a hypothetical temperature of a cartridge 52. The microcontroller system may be tested, for example, by testing the light intensity of the LEDs 534 or other light sources and / or ensuring that the microcontroller system begins a boot sequence upon device startup. The user interface can be tested by testing the microphone. The charging circuitry can be tested by determining whether or not the circuitry finishes charging at the correct charge level and at the low temperature shutdown level.
[0537] In some embodiments, the power supply source 508 and the protection circuit module (PCM) may be tested. The power supply source 508, for example, the battery 508, may be tested alone before being connected to the PCM and / or after the battery 508 is connected to the PCM. For example, the battery 508 may be tested to ensure that the battery is producing the correct voltage readings. Generally, the PCM prevents or reduces the likelihood of the battery discharging or experiencing an overcharge. The PCM may therefore be tested to determine whether or not the battery 508 shuts down when the PCM shorts the battery 508. The battery 508 and the PCM may also be tested to calibrate the fuel gauge so that the fuel gauge accurately reads the amount of charge left in the battery 508.
[0538] In some embodiments, the secondary PCBA 512A is tested. For example, the pressure sensor(s) (e.g., the ambient pressure sensor and / or the puff pressure sensor) positioned on the secondary PCBA 512A may be tested to ensure that the sensors accurately read the corresponding air pressure. The ambient pressure sensor may be tested to ensure that the sensor accurately measures atmospheric pressure. The ambient and puff pressure sensors may also be tested to ensure that the readings between the two pressure sensors are not distorted before assembly. The PCBA secondary PCBA 512A may be tested before and / or after assembly into the vaporizer body 50. For example, it may be beneficial to test the secondary PCBA 512A after assembly with the cartridge connector 606 to ensure that the secondary PCBA 512A was not damaged during assembly.
[0539] At 802, the cap module 502 may be provided to form a testable subassembly such that the core functionality and / or core performance of the cap module can be tested before being assembled with the rest of the components or other modules of the vaporizer body 50. The ability to test the performance of the cap module 502 as a single module has several advantages. For example, the performance of the cap module 502 and the components of the cap module 502, e.g., the antenna 522A, can be tested without interference from other components of the vaporizer body 50. The cap module 502 can therefore be tested more accurately without degrading RF performance. In some embodiments, modular testing of the cap module 502 before assembly with other modules or components of the vaporizer body 50 may help reduce or prevent the manufacture of vaporizer devices with poor performance, since the poorly performing cap module 502 can simply be discarded before assembly with the vaporizer body 50. The root cause of many potential problems resulting in poor performance may also be more easily found when the cap module 502 is tested on a module-by-module basis.
[0540] [Fig. 16A] illustrates an exemplary method 802 of assembling the cap module 502 according to embodiments of the present invention. At 814, the cap 520 may be provided. At 516, the antenna support assembly, which includes the antenna support 522, the antenna 522A, the charging contacts 524, the magnet 536, the coaxial cable 532 and the flex element 528, slides into the cap 520 (see [Fig. 16B]). At 818, the separator 538 is provided to at least partially encompass the cap module and slide within the cap 520. The separator 538 may be attached to the cap 520, snap into the cap 520, and / or may otherwise be coupled to the cap 520 to securely secure the antenna support assembly.
[0541] As shown in [Fig. 16B], the antenna support assembly may be nested between the cap 520 and the separator 538. The antenna 522A, among other components, may be very sensitive and / or easily damaged. Nesting the antenna 522A between the cap 520 and the separator 538 provides a more robust and / or less damageable antenna structure. The nested antenna support assembly may result in less stress on the antenna 522A, thereby reducing the likelihood that the antenna 522A will crack or otherwise become damaged.
[0542] At 820, the PCBA 512 may be installed on the cap module 502. For example, Figure 16 illustrates an example of a cap module 502 in which the PCBA 512 has been installed. The PCBA 512 may be coupled to the separator 538 by chemical or mechanical means. The PCBA 512 may be electrically coupled to one or more other components of the cap module 502, for example, the coaxial cable 532.
[0543] At 822, the performance of the cap module 502 may be tested. In some embodiments, a network analyzer may be used to test components of the cap module 502, for example, the antenna 522A. For example, an SI 1 test, among other tests, is performed to ensure that the antenna 522A is transmitting and / or receiving sinusoidal shapes at the correct frequency or wavelength.
[0544] Referring to [Fig. 15], at 804, the cartridge connector 406 may be provided and at 808, the cartridge connector 406 may be coupled to the frame 504.
[0545] In some embodiments according to the present invention in which the flex element 510 is coupled to the secondary PCBA 512A, for example in the configuration illustrated in [Fig. 9J], the cartridge connector 406 may be coupled to another component, for example with the flex element 510 (see Figures 17 and 18). The flex element 510 may include a coupling portion 513 that contains the pressure sensor 429. The pressure sensor 429 may be coupled to the cartridge connector 406 by inserting the pressure sensor 429 into the sealing recess 463 of the cartridge connector 406.
[0546] The coupling portion 513 may include one or more (e.g., two or four or more) slots 511 that may receive a coupling portion of the receptacle contacts 462 of the cartridge connector 406. In some embodiments, the coupling portion of the receptacle contacts 462 is soldered or otherwise secured to the slots 511 in which it resides. The coupling portion 513 may provide an electrical interface between the flex element 510 and the receptacle contacts 462.
[0547] The cartridge connector 406 may be coupled to the framework 504. For example, Figures 19A and 19B illustrate the cartridge connector 406 coupled to the framework 504. As mentioned above, the cartridge connector 406 may include one or more sidewall connection features 468. The sidewall connection features 468 may extend downwardly out of opposing sidewalls of the cartridge connector 406 and may include an opening 499A for receiving a corresponding component that extends out of the outer shell 402 and / or another component of the vaporizer body 450, such as the framework 504.
[0548] The retaining springs 546 may extend inwardly out of the first and second side walls 542, 544 of the frame 504 toward each other. The retaining springs 546 may be biased inwardly from the first and second sidewalls 542, 544 of the frame 504 toward each other to provide a spring-like function. Accordingly, the retaining springs 546 may be coupled to the cartridge connector 406, e.g., via a snap-in arrangement. For example, the opening 499A of the sidewall connection features 468 may slide between the biased retaining springs 546. The retaining springs 546 may snap into place and / or otherwise be held in place without the opening 499A. In some embodiments, when the retaining springs 546 are positioned within the opening 499A, the retaining springs 546 may be secured to the frame 504, e.g., via a spot weld.
[0549] In some embodiments according to the present invention in which the flex element 510 is first coupled to the power supply source 508 and the secondary PCBA 512A is separately coupled to the cartridge connector 406, for example in the configuration illustrated in Figures 9K-9L, the cartridge connector 406 may first be coupled to another component, for example with the framework 504 (see [Fig. 20B]). [Fig. 20A] illustrates an exemplary method 809 of assembling the cartridge connector 406, framework 504, secondary PCBA 512A and power supply source 508.
[0550] As mentioned above, at 808, the cartridge connector 406 may be coupled (e.g., mechanically coupled) to the framework 504. The cartridge connector 406 may include one or more sidewall connection features 468. The sidewall connection features 468 may extend downwardly from opposing sidewalls of the cartridge connector 406 and may include an opening 499A for receiving a corresponding component that extends from the outer shell 402 and / or another component of the vaporizer body 450, e.g., the framework 504.
[0551] The retaining springs 546 may extend inwardly from the first and second sidewalls 542, 544 of the frame 504 toward each other. The retaining springs 546 may be biased inwardly from the first and second sidewalls 542, 544 of the frame 504 toward each other to provide a spring-like function. Accordingly, the retaining springs 546 may be coupled to the cartridge connector 406, for example via a snap-in arrangement. For example, the opening 499A of the sidewall connection features 468 may slide between the biased retaining springs 546. The retaining springs 546 may snap into place and / or otherwise be held in place without the opening 499A.In some embodiments, when the retaining springs 546 are positioned within the opening 499A, the retaining springs 546 may be secured to the frame 504, for example by spot welding. In some . embodiments, one or more sidewall connecting features 468 may be overmolded with the first and second sidewalls 542 of the frame 504 to form an integral body.
[0552] At 830, once the cartridge connector 406 is coupled to the frame 504, the secondary PCBA 512A may be coupled (e.g., electrically coupled) to the cartridge connector 406. As mentioned above, the secondary PCBA 512A may include one or more (e.g., two or four or more) slots 511 capable of receiving a coupling portion of the receptacle contacts 462 of the cartridge connector 406. The secondary PCBA 512A may be deposited into the bottom surface of the cartridge connector 406. In some embodiments, the coupling portion of the receptacle contacts 462 is soldered or otherwise secured to the slots 511 in which they reside. For example, the coupling portion of the receptacle contacts 462 may be laser-welded to the slots 511 in which they reside.During the laser welding process, the cartridge frame-connector subassembly may be rotated approximately 20 degrees about a vertical axis to laser weld each of the slots 511 to provide a secure electrical connection between the secondary PCBA 512A and the receptacle contacts 462. At 831, the performance of the secondary PCBA 512A may be tested as described above.
[0553] At 832, the frame 504 and cartridge connector 406 assembly may be aligned with the power supply source 508 (e.g., the frame 504 may be positioned approximately 90 degrees relative to the power supply source 508) and at 834, the frame 504 may be rotated about an axis on the power supply source 508 to securely attach the power supply source 508 to the frame 504. The frame 504 may include a pressure-sensitive adhesive (not shown) positioned on the frame that activates when the frame 504 contacts the power supply source 508. When the frame 504 pivots and compresses the power supply source 508, the pressure-sensitive adhesive fully activates, securing the power supply 508 to the frame 504.
[0554] For example, Figures 20B-20D illustrate an exemplary method of coupling the power supply-PCM subassembly 2004 to the cartridge frame-connector subassembly 2002. As illustrated in Figures 20B-20D, the cartridge frame-connector subassembly may be positioned within a slot formed in a pivotable component 2000 while the power supply-PCM subassembly 2004 rests on a stationary platform component 2006. As shown in [Fig. 20B], the first end 510A of the flex element 510 that is coupled to the power supply 508 is aligned with the secondary PCB A 512A which is coupled to the cartridge connector. The pivotable component 2000 includes the side arms 2001 to maintain the position of the power supply-PCM subassembly 2002.
[0555] When the pivotable component 2000 pivots, the frame-cartridge connector subassembly 2002 folds downward onto the power supply-PCM subassembly 2004 and the side arms 2001 pivot away from the power supply-PCM subassembly 2004 (see Figures 20C and 20D). A pressure-sensitive adhesive positioned on the frame (not shown) activates when the frame contacts the power supply to secure the frame to the power supply. Once the pivotable component 2000 has fully pivoted as shown in [Fig. 20D], the pressure-sensitive adhesive activates as soon as the power source-PCM subassembly 2004 is fully attached to the frame-cartridge connector subassembly 2002. Other adhesives may be used to couple the two subassemblies. The 2000 pivoting component and 2006 stationary platform help reduce damage to the power supply, secondary PCB A, and / or other electrical components during assembly by maintaining alignment and reducing the number of moving components.
[0556] At 810, the cap module 502 may be coupled to a frame 504. For example, as shown in [Fig. 21A], the cap module 502 has frame attachment features 554 such as slots capable of receiving at least a portion of the frame 504, e.g., one or more of the cap module connection features 550. The cap module connection features 550 may include one or more side arms 550A that may be inserted into the slots 554. The cap module connection features 550 may include a center arm 550B capable of resting against a portion of the separator 538 to bias the separator 538 and retain the side arms 550A within the slots 554.
[0557] [Fig. 21B] illustrates an example of a cap module 702 coupled to the frame 504. For example, as shown in [Fig. 21B], the cap module 702 has frame attachment features 754, e.g., a slot that can receive at least a portion of the frame 504, e.g., one or more of the cap module connection features 550. The cap module connection features 550 may include one or more side arms 550A and a connection member 550C that can be inserted into the slot 754. The cap module connection features 550 may include a center arm 550B that can rest against a portion of the separator 538 to bias the separator 538 and retain the side arms 550A within the slot 754. The cap module connection features 550 create a tension spring force which securely fixes the module of cap 702 to frame 504. The cap module connection features 550 to align the joint between the cap module 702 and the edge of the outer shell 102 by readjusting the tolerance. The frame 504 also includes secure attachment members 578 wrapping around at least a portion of the cap module 702 to better securely attach the cap module 702 within the frame 504. [Fig. 22] illustrates another example of the battery 508 positioned between the frame 504 and the cartridge connector 406 / flex element 510 subassembly. The battery 508 may fit between the interior surfaces of the retaining springs 546. In some embodiments, the retaining springs 546 may be biased toward the sides of the battery 508 to hold the battery 508 in place. In some embodiments, the battery 508 is wider than the space between the opposing retaining springs 546 so as to hold the battery in place between the retaining springs 546.
[0558] [Fig.23A] illustrates an example of a flex element 510 electrically coupled to the cap module 502. The flex element 510 that may have been previously coupled to the cartridge connector 406 at one end may be coupled to the cap module 502 at the other end. The flex element 510 may be coupled to the PCBA 512 to establish electrical communication between the flex element 510 and the PCBA 512. [Fig. 23B] illustrates another example of a flex element electrically coupled to the cap module 704.
[0559] At 811, the performance of the frame subassembly 501 may be tested prior to inserting the frame assembly 501 into the outer shell 102. For example, various validation tests may be performed on the modules to ensure that the performance of each module has not changed during assembly of the vaporizer body 50. In some embodiments, the validation tests may include testing the frame subassembly 501 using theoretical resistances. For example, the frame subassembly 501 may be coupled to a circuit comprising at least five parallel resistors (e.g., different resistances) to test the heating circuitry of the frame subassembly 501. Testing at various resistance levels may provide an accurate representation of a vaporizer cartridge coupled to the vaporizer body operating in different states.Performing the validation test before inserting the frame assembly 501 into the outer shell 102 may help reduce the likelihood that the vaporizer body 50 will fail and / or malfunction upon assembly.
[0560] At 812, the frame subassembly 501 may be inserted into the outer shell 102 as shown in [Fig.24A]-24B. The frame subassembly 501 may be pushed and / or pulled into the outer shell 102 using one or more tools.
[0561] When the frame subassembly 501 is fully inserted into the outer shell 102, the cap 520 is positioned adjacent the second end portion 533 of the outer shell 102. However, in some embodiments, at least a portion of the cap 520, 720 is detached from the second end portion 533 of the outer shell 102, 602 when the frame subassembly 501 is inserted into the outer shell 102. The space between the cap 520, 720 and the outer shell 102, 602 may desirably define a vent. The vent allows air to flow into, out of, and / or around the cap. The vent provides ambient ventilation at the second end portion 533, thereby providing ambient airflow for pressure sensing.
[0562] The frame subassembly 501 may be coupled to the outer shell 102 according to embodiments of the present invention. For example, as described above, the retaining features of the cartridge connector may be coupled, such as by snap-fitting, into one or more portions of the receiving features 190 of the outer shell 102. In operation, when the vaporizer body 50 is assembled, the vaporizer cartridge 52 may be inserted into the opening of the first end portion 531 of the outer shell 102 to communicate with the cartridge connector 406. [Fig. 24B] illustrates another example of a frame subassembly 501A inserted into the outer shell.
[0563] Figures 30A and 30B illustrate another example of a vaporizer body 3050 according to embodiments of the present invention. The vaporizer body 3050 includes one or more of the same or similar functions of the vaporizer body 50 described above. For example, the vaporizer body 3050 includes the power supply source 8 (such as a battery which may be a rechargeable battery), the control system 19 (e.g., a PCBA 3012), one or more sensors, charging contacts, and the cartridge receptacle 69 configured to receive a vaporizer cartridge 52 to be coupled to the vaporizer body 3050 through one or more of a variety of attachment structures.
[0564] The sensor(s) may include a pressure sensor 3029 (as well as any other sensor 3029). The pressure sensor 3029 may be positioned parallel to the receptacle contacts 62. The pressure sensor 3029 may be positioned on or coupled (e.g., electrically or electronically connected, either physically or via a wireless connection) to the PCBA 3012. For example, the pressure sensor 3029 may communicate with the PCBA 3012 via a rigid flex element 3010. [Fig. 30B] illustrates an example of a rigid flex element 3010 coupled to the PCBA 3012. As noted above with respect to the rigid flex element 510, the rigid flex element 3010 may be coupled to the PCBA 3012 by a solder, press fit, and / or snap-in arrangement (see, e.g., Figures 9M-9N and 30B). In some embodiments, the PCBA 3012 may be compressed and / or snapped onto the rigid flex element 3010 and / or a portion of the power supply source 8 to establish an electrical connection. The snap-in arrangement may help establish a more secure clamping connection between the rigid flex element 3010 and the PCBA 3012. The snap-in arrangement may help facilitate assembly of the PCBA 3012 and the rigid flex element 3010 and help limit or prevent damage to the PCBA 3012 and / or the rigid flex element 3010 during assembly. [0583] [Fig. 32] is a system flow diagram of an exemplary integrated power management unit 3200 according to certain aspects of the present invention that may improve power supply management, reduce power demands, provide flexible heating control, decrease the number of separate components to thereby reduce performance variations, and the like. The exemplary integrated power management unit 3200 may manage the proper operation of the steam control system 3110; the stack and power supply system 3115; and the user interface 3120. The exemplary integrated power management unit 3200 may interface with the microcontroller system 3105 and integrates analog and power supply subsystems on a main board and a high-power flex element.
[0584] The exemplary integrated power management unit 3200 includes the heater control 3205, the measurement circuit 3210, the DC rectifier 3215, the charger 3220, the system power supply rails (not shown), the LED driver 3225, the horn driver 3230, and the gas gauge subsystems 3235. In some embodiments, the exemplary integrated power management unit 3200 does not integrate sensors (accelerometer, pressure sensors) and further supports components such as the capsule connector 3145, the antenna 3130, the connector 3140, and the memory 3135.

The integrated power management unit 3200 may include an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) 3255 for monitoring system currents and voltages as provided by the power management unit 3200. The ADC 3255 may monitor the temperatures of the remote die and NTC temperature monitoring system to implement protection mechanisms, as described more fully below.
[0586] The integrated power management unit 3200 may include an input / output (I / O) device and system control 3260 that activates the control system 3105 to modify the operation (e.g., configure) of the integrated power management unit 3200. The I / O and system control 3260 may include an internal oscillator as well as connections for an external oscillator used to drive the system clock.
[0587] The heater control 3205 may provide an integrated heat path and a power supply source for heating the capsule heater 3280 (also referred to as a capsule charger) that is positioned within a capsule. [Fig. 33] is a system flow diagram illustrating an exemplary heater control 3205 according to some embodiments of the present invention. The heater control 3205 may include a heat path that may include load switches 3305 (e.g., switches as illustrated, a half-bridge topology, and the like) that control the application of a power supply 3310 or external voltage 3315 (referred to as VSYS / VBST) to the capsule charger 3280 via the transmission line (referred to as output-i- (out+)).The load switches 3305 may have non-overlapping circuitry to ensure proper synchronization (e.g., no risk of back-feeding). The load switches may be controlled by control logic 3320 that may be programmed and / or configured to adjust the load switches 3305 to heat the capsule heater 3280 to heat a vaporizable material contained within the capsule. The control logic 3320 may include one or more input terminals 3325 or pins that may receive signals from a device control system 3105 or any system within the vaporization device or integrated heater control 3205. Similarly, the power supply source 3310 may be programmable and controlled by the control logic 3320.The load switches 3305 may also be controlled by the protection mechanism circuit 3330 described more fully below.
[0588] In some embodiments, the load switches 3305 may be implemented in a half-bridge topology in which a DC battery voltage is changed to a sinusoidal shape from 0 volts to a battery voltage by varying the pulse width modulation frequency. This variable sinusoidal voltage / current may be used to operate the capsule heater 3280. The half-bridge embodiment may allow for better inductance loads since the current is freewheeling during the off time.
[0589] The integrated heater control 3205 may include an integrated voltage sensing system 3335 and a current monitoring system 3340 coupled to the control logic 3320 via a decimation block 3345. The integrated voltage sensing system 3335 may include an ADC 3337 and an analog front end 3339 that may be connected to the capsule via the sense+ and sense- connections to measure the voltage across the heater element. of capsule 3280. The integrated current monitoring system 3340 may include an ADC 3342, an analog front end 3343, and a switch 3344 coupled to the transmission line (output+ (out+)) to measure the current across the transmission line (output+ (out+)). The switch 3344 may be configured to connect the integrated current monitoring system 3340 to either the current supply source 3310 or the external voltage source 3315, depending on a mode of operation of the device. The voltage detection system 3335 and the current monitoring system 3340 may provide their respective measurements, via the decimation block 3345, to the control logic 3320 for processing and analysis.Using the integrated voltage detection system 3335 and the integrated current monitoring system 3340 which can provide real-time and synchronous voltage and current detection, it is possible to achieve faster control loop response time and higher precision temperature control. The signal status and filtering via analog front ends 3338, 3343 provide low noise measurements.
[0590] In some embodiments, guaranteed performance may be possible (e.g., absolute accuracy, gain deviation, group delay, and the like). In some embodiments, a dedicated inter-integrated circuit (I2C) port may be included to achieve uninterrupted polling of data (e.g., 8kHz) to the control system 3105.
[0591] In some embodiments, the integrated heater control 3205 may include an integrated boost converter 3350. The boost converter 3350 may provide an optional source to the heater load switches 3305 and may be disabled / bypassed. The inclusion of a boost converter 3350 may provide flexible current delivery ranges for the various high-efficiency capsule resistors. In some embodiments, the boost converter 3350 may support programmable output voltage and current limits.
[0592] In some embodiments, the integrated heater control 3205 may include voltage remote sensing using four-wheel sensing that compensates for losses caused by parasitic resistances and capsule contact resistances. Such an approach may provide accurate and uniform measurements of the capsule for high-precision temperature control. In some embodiments, a multiplexer (mux) may be included to switch a line of the voltage sensing system 3335 between one or more of the four capsule connections. For example, a multiplexer may be implemented that can switch a first connection of the voltage sensing system 3335 between sense+ and out+.
[0593] The integrated heating control 3205 may include one or more protection mechanism circuits 3330. [Fig. 34] is a system flowchart illustrating in more detail an example of a protection mechanism circuit 3330. The protection mechanisms may also be referred to as fail-safe and fail-safe mechanism circuits. The protection mechanism circuits 3330 may be operatively coupled to the system clock, the control logic 3320 and may include configurable protection comparators 3405 that compare predetermined thresholds (e.g., stored in the register), to the operating parameters of the vaporization device. These operating parameters may include voltage (e.g., capsule input, capsule output, boost), current (e.g., capsule input, capsule output), temperature (e.g., die, negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistors), current limit (e.g., boost, load), and short circuit (e.g., output). During use of the vaporization device, the operating parameters, which may be obtained via one or more sensors or detection circuits, may be compared to their respective thresholds to determine whether or not the operating parameter is above or below the threshold. If an operating parameter is determined to be abnormal (e.g., above a high threshold or below a low threshold), the protection mechanisms may send an alarm to the control logic 3320.In response to receiving an alarm signal from the protection mechanism circuit 3330, the control logic 3320 may modify the operation of the device, e.g., may cut off certain subsystems from power (e.g., disconnect circuits or functions of the vaporization device). For example, if the temperature of the capsule is determined to be too high and the protection mechanism circuit 3330 generates an alarm, the control logic 3320 may disconnect the heat path (e.g., the power supply source 3310, the load switches 3305) to prevent them from supplying power to the capsule heater 3280.
[0594] Another example of a protection mechanism (e.g., anti-failure) may include a heater shutdown. The protection mechanism circuit 3330 may include a hardware timer that may disable the continuous heating capsule heater 3280 (e.g., the coil) so as to protect the hardware or sensor from snagging. In some embodiments, the shutdown durations may be programmable (e.g., 5s, 10s, 20s, 40s, and the like).
[0595] Another example of a protection mechanism (e.g., anti-failure) may include over-temperature protection. The protection mechanism circuit 3330 may implement a thermal-based protection scheme that uses various thermal sensors within the vaporizer device to throttle and / or disable various subsystems. These thermal sensors may include negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistors to monitor the temperature at various locations for the throttling and protection function, dedicated stack NTC for the throttling and protection function based on die temperature monitoring to prevent silicon damage, and the like. If the protection mechanism circuits 3330 determine that a temperature reading within the vaporizer device is too high, the control logic 3320 may modify the operation of the vaporizer device to reduce heat generation.Reducing heat generation may be accomplished, for example, by changing clock speed; current voltage levels; powering up certain subsystems or parts of the device and / or circuits; and the like.
[0596] Another example protection mechanism (e.g., fail-safe) may include overvoltage / overcurrent protection (OVP / OCP) and undervoltage lockout (UVLO). The protection mechanism circuit 3330 may disable the subsystem and functionality if the voltage and currents are outside an expected operating range (e.g., as detected by the protection comparators 3405 and may include fast-acting comparator-based triggers). In some embodiments, the OVP / OCP and UVLO functions may be implemented on the heater and high-power path signal subsystems.
[0597] Another example of a protection mechanism (e.g., anti-failure) may include short circuit protection. The protection mechanism circuit 3330 may disable the outputs of various subsystems when electrical short circuits are detected (e.g., the current draw may increase and a short circuit may be detected by a protection comparator 3405). In some embodiments, the short circuit protection may be implemented for the output current rails for charger, DC-DC converters, LED driver, speaker (e.g., buzzer), amplifier, and the like. In some embodiments, the short circuit protection may be implemented for the capsule heater output 3280 with programmable resistance thresholds.
[0598] Another example of a protection mechanism (e.g., anti-failure) may include current limits. The protection mechanism circuit 3330 and the protection comparators 3405 may detect a maximum current threshold (e.g., a ceiling) to prevent the devices / external components. In some embodiments, these intensity limit thresholds may be programmable.
[0599] Another example of a protection mechanism (e.g., anti-failure) may include multi-level throttling and brownout protection. The protection mechanism circuit 3330 and the protection comparators 3405 may perform real-time monitoring of system voltages and temperatures. The control logic 3320 may, in response to the protection mechanism circuit 3330 determining that an alarm is triggered, prevent the various subsystems of the vaporization device from operating based on system states (e.g., turning off the heater in cold weather, turning off the load in high temperatures, and the like). In some embodiments, these thresholds and behaviors may be programmable.
[0600] Another example of a protection mechanism (e.g., fail-safe) may include a redundant clock source. The protection mechanism circuit 3330 may include an internal RCO and an optional external 32kHz XTAL. Such a redundant clock source may ensure proper operation of the real-time clock (RTC) that controls the heater shutdown safety function so that the RTC is not dependent on an external component that may be more prone to failure.
[0601] Another example of a protection mechanism (e.g., anti-failure) may include a hardware watchdog timer. The protection mechanism circuit 3330 may include an external clock pin 3410 necessary to maintain the capability of the functional heat path. Such a hardware watchdog timer may protect against parasitic triggers of firmware or hardware (e.g., of a sensor) (e.g., due to handling, freezing, and the like). In some embodiments, the clock speed timing thresholds may be programmable.
[0602] Another example of a protection mechanism (e.g., fail-safe) may include a heater anti-shutdown pin 3415. The protection mechanism circuit 3330 may include an open drain architecture that allows other subsystems (e.g., the control system 3105) to disable the heater (in the event of a sensor failure). In some embodiments, the heater disablement includes a programmable time delay.
[0603] Another example protection mechanism (e.g., fail-safe) may include a UVLO pin 3420. The protection mechanism circuit 3330 may include an additional UVLO output pin 3420 to notify the system of low voltage which may allow other external subsystems to independently handle low voltage conditions.
[0604] Another example of a protection mechanism (e.g., anti-fault) may include fast and graceful shutdown behavior. The protection mechanism circuit 3330 may result in shutdown behavior caused by fault conditions or protection mechanisms handled elegantly in hardware without the need for firmware control. For example, for OVP, OCP, short circuits, overtemperature detection, the heater and / or high power subsystems may be immediately shut down (e.g., from 10 ps to 100 ps) in a manner that does not rely on ADC sampling to determine fault conditions. In some embodiments, each subsystem may have a respective shutdown mechanism and / or circuitry. For example, faults occurring on the heater control 3205 may disable the heater block without affecting any other part of the system.
[0605] In some embodiments, one or more parameters, settings, or values may be configured for one-time programming (OTP). Various described shutdown and safety functions may be hard-programmed via OTP programming for mass production or customized. The desired settings of the OTPs may be specified once and cannot be reprogrammed or reconfigured thereafter. The OTP may prevent configuration errors or possible user error, and the central values associated with faults are not susceptible to being changed undesirably (e.g., after a market change).
[0606] In some embodiments, the integrated heater control 3205 may include additional pins connected for control logic 3320 to operate the integrated heater control 3205. For example, these pins may include a value select pin 3425, a heat pulse width modulation (PWM) pin 3430, a heater readiness pin 3435, a clock line (SCL) pin 3440, and a data line (SDA) pin 3445. The value select pin 3425 may enable selection between the current supply source and the load switch to drive the capsule. The heat PWM 3430 may enable the load switch to vary the intensity supplied to the capsule heater 3280 for temperature control. The heater readiness pin 3435 may include an enable pin for the heater control 3205.The heater shutdown pin may include a prevent pin to disable the heater control 3205. The SCL pin 3440 and SD pin A 3445 may enable a dedicated I2C bus to poll the heater voltage and current sensing data.
[0607] In some embodiments, and as noted above, the integrated heater control may include 3205 registers for configuring operating parameters (including performance and safety parameters) such as overvoltage protection (OVP), overcurrent protection (OCP), current limits, hardware shutdowns, and the like.
[0608] In some embodiments, an integrated heater control 3205 may provide numerous technical advantages. For example, an integrated heater control 3205 may reduce the number of separate external components required in a vaporization device that may reduce the variation observed in device performance due to component tolerance and deviation. Additionally, an integrated heater control 3205 may include fast startup times from sleep (e.g., 5ms) and fast measurement activation times (e.g., <100 ps).
[0609] Referring again to [Fig. 32], in some embodiments, the integrated power management unit 3200 includes the protection mechanisms 3270. The protection mechanisms 3270 may be implemented in the heater control 3205, as described with respect to [Fig. 33], or within the power management unit 3200 as a logic block separate from the heater control 3205. The protection mechanisms may act on all blocks independently and may respond in a similar manner, for example by shutting down upon detection of a short circuit.
[0610] In some embodiments, the integrated power management unit 3200 may include a pod ID 3265. The pod ID 3265 may store calibration data and pod information that may lead to a better user experience through more detailed and accurate usage information (which pod device the watch has, nicotine consumption log, pod fill level estimates, and the like). In some embodiments, a POD pod ID is factory-programmed and prevents counterfeiting. Communication may be wireless, via a power-over-power signal, or via a signal transmission cable interface.
[0611] Some embodiments of the present invention may provide electrical improvements to vaporization devices. For example, some embodiments of the present invention may include linear charging for parity of functions (e.g., may achieve part of functions for charging performance in terms of efficiency and charging time) or switching charging for faster charging speeds and less sensitive points. Some embodiments may include integrated voltage and / or current monitoring on the xBUS / xBAT / xSYS lines w...
