Cosmetic compositions containing high quantities of active ingredients and thickening polymers often suffer from fluffing, leading to instability and poor application on the skin, resulting in a non-uniform emulsion and aesthetically unpleasant small beads or particles.
A cosmetic composition in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by ethoxylated agents with an HLB of 8.5 to 16, which interacts with the hydrophobic/hydrophilic interface to reduce or eliminate fluffing, using ingredients like Laureth-4 and Oleth-10, while maintaining a stable and smooth texture.
The composition effectively prevents fluffing, ensuring a uniform application and improved skin benefits such as hydration, softness, and reduced appearance of pores and wrinkles, while maintaining a light and stable emulsion.
Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: COSMETIC COMPOSITION THAT RESISTS LINTING FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates generally to a lint-resistant cosmetic composition and method of making the same for providing benefits to the skin of a user, the lint-resistant cosmetic composition including a high amount of actives for providing benefits to the skin of the user and having a favorable aesthetic texture that is resistant to lint which is associated with the use of polymeric thickeners and other ingredients that stabilize and provide aesthetic benefits to the lint-resistant cosmetic composition. The benefits of the fluff-resistant cosmetic composition may include, but are not limited to, general hydration of the skin, or enhancement of the skin, for example, by improving the smoothness and radiance of the skin, minimizing the appearance of pores, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, brightening the skin, treating acne, or reducing the effects of acne, and reducing one or more of the following characteristics: dryness, tightness, blackheads, redness and inflammatory lesions, or a combination of all of these characteristics. CONTEXT OF THE INVENTION
[0002] There are a variety of skin conditions that benefit from leave-on cosmetic compositions that can be applied to the skin for any of a variety of possible benefits. In some examples, it is difficult to formulate skin care cosmetics that include sufficiently high amounts of actives to impart the desired benefits. Products that include high amounts of actives are often formulated with a high content of oils, emulsifiers, and / or thickeners to facilitate dispersion and / or solubilization of the actives. These formulations can be heavy and leave the skin feeling greasy or cause dryness or irritation, and those that include stabilizing thickeners are vulnerable to fluffing.More generally, skin care compositions in emulsion form with approximately forty percent or more aqueous phase that include polymeric thickeners may also be vulnerable to linting upon application. Such linting can affect the availability of actives for maximum skin benefit, and linting is particularly problematic for leave-on formulations.
[0003] Accordingly, there is a need in the art for a cosmetic composition that provides a lightweight feel in a stable formulation that resists fluffing. stinging associated with compositions stabilized by thickeners. BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0027] This disclosure describes exemplary embodiments in accordance with the general concepts of the invention and is not intended to limit the scope of the invention in any way. Indeed, the invention as described in the specification is broader than, and not limited by, the exemplary embodiments presented herein, and the terms used herein have their full ordinary meaning. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0028] In the context of the invention, a direct emulsion is an oil-in-water emulsion.
[0029] As used herein, the term "linting" refers to the failure of some or all of a composition to soak in when applied to a keratinous substrate, including facial and body skin, lips, hair, and nails, forming small globules, strands, or particles that accumulate on the surface, and exhibiting an inability to be spread as a uniform emulsion. Instability may occur in compositions made outside the scope of the disclosure (i.e., compositions lacking the disclosed polymer and ethoxylated agents), and compositions including amounts of polymeric thickener greater than the amounts according to the disclosure.Similarly, other instability issues of a composition outside the scope of the disclosure (i.e., compositions lacking the disclosed polymer and ethoxylated agents) include phase separation, aqueous texture, gelation of the cosmetic composition.
[0030] The terms "exclude", "exempt" and "substantially exempt" mean that no reliably measurable excluded material, e.g., excluded gellan and other gelling agents, waxes, vegetable butters greater than about 5% by weight, based on the total weight of the fluff-resistant cosmetic composition, and alcohols / saturated fatty acids above C16 present in amounts greater than about 5% by weight, based on the total weight of the fluff-resistant cosmetic composition, or other excluded material as described herein, is present in the fluff-resistant cosmetic composition. The term "substantially free" means that, although it is preferable that no excluded material be present in the lint-resistant cosmetic composition, it is possible to have very small amounts of the excluded material in the lint-resistant cosmetic composition of the invention, provided that such amounts do not materially affect the beneficial properties of the lint-resistant cosmetic composition. In particular, "substantially free" means that the excluded material may be present in the lint-resistant cosmetic composition in an amount of less than 5%, or less than 4%, or less than 3%, or less than 2%, or less than 1%, or less than 0.1% by weight, based on the . total weight of the fluff-resistant cosmetic composition.
[0031] As shown herein, the inventors have provided the fluff-resistant cosmetic composition in the form of a direct oil-in-water emulsion that includes aqueous and oily phases and includes at least one cosmetically acceptable polymeric thickener selected from the group consisting of crosslinked polymers, gums, taurate-based polymers, carbomers, polyacrylates, and combinations thereof, at least one ethoxylated agent in liquid form at room temperature in a range of about 20°C to about 28°C and having an HLB of about 8.5 to about 16; and at least one oil. The fluff-resistant cosmetic composition resists fluffing when applied by rubbing or smoothing onto a keratinous substrate.
[0032] The fluff-resistant cosmetic composition may also include one or more additional ingredients selected from, but not limited to, phenylethylre-sorcinol, chelating agents, other skin-active components, antimicrobial agents and preservatives, fillers, antioxidants, fragrances, pearlescent agents, odor absorbers, colorants, essential oils, vitamins, and combinations thereof.
[0033] A key problem with cosmetic compositions that include polymeric emulsifiers and thickeners is linting, which is the inability of a composition to be spread as a uniform emulsion, leading to the failure of some or all of the applied composition to penetrate the skin. Linting represents the formation of small globules or particles that accumulate on the surface of the skin when the composition is spread onto a substrate, such as skin. Linting is visually and aesthetically unpleasant and also affects the effectiveness of the composition. Linting is often associated with the presence of relatively high amounts of thickeners / thickening emulsifiers that are useful for stabilizing high amounts of skin active substances.Although thickening agents / emulsifiers can be effective in stabilizing emulsions, the risk of pilling is high even at modest usage levels of these ingredients. Additionally, for some formulas, especially those containing electrolytes or ionic components, a higher level of polymer is required for stability, increasing the risk of pilling. Pilling is an unacceptable characteristic for products because consumers do not want their product to come off their skin; this problem becomes more pronounced as consumers increasingly layer skin care and makeup products on their face.
[0034] The inventors sought to develop a solution to reduce the linting potential associated with a wide variety of polymeric thickeners. The inventors surprisingly discovered that ethoxylated fatty alcohols and ethoxylated fatty acids represent a class of raw materials (hereinafter referred to as "agents ethoxylated") that can significantly reduce the fluffing potential of multiple classes of polymeric thickeners / emulsifiers that are used in a wide range of oil-in-water emulsions. In general cosmetic techniques, ethoxylated fatty alcohols and ethoxylated fatty acids are known as emulsifiers or solubilizers and are characterized by the presence of a hydrophobic alkyl alcohol / fatty acid moiety and a hydrophilic ethylene oxide moiety.
[0035] In preparing the inventive fluff-resistant cosmetic composition, several liquid emulsifiers / solubilizers of intermediate HLB (from about 8 to about 16) were tested as additives to simple formulations containing polymeric thickeners present in amounts known to cause fluffing of the simple formulations. While not bound by theory, it is believed that an intermediate HLB emulsifier (relative to an oil, for example) would interact with the aqueous and oil emulsion components of the fluff-resistant cosmetic composition at the hydrophobic / hydrophilic interface and not at just one of the hydrophobic or hydrophilic portions of the agent. Low HLB emulsifiers were not tested because they are known in the art to produce inverse emulsions and could disrupt and / or destabilize forward emulsions.Ethoxylated agents selected from ethoxylated fatty alcohols and ethoxylated fatty acids were employed in accordance with the disclosure and were shown to reduce or eliminate linting in simple formulations that were otherwise known to linting. These test formulations did not result in destabilized inverse emulsions and / or forward emulsions. Specific examples of such ethoxylated agents, as shown in the examples, include laureth-4, oleth-10. .
[0036] As shown, in certain embodiments, the fluff-resistant cosmetic composition may optionally include one or more glyceryl-containing ingredients, for example, but not limited to, polyglyceryl-6 dicaprate and PEG-7 glyceryl cocoate, which may be advantageously used to improve the permeability of the actives, among other possible benefits.
[0037] Thus, the inventors have shown that the ethoxylated agents employed as described and exemplified herein surprisingly exhibit a marked effect of reducing linting which has been a vexing problem in the art for a wide range of emulsion architectures that include a wide variety of polymeric thickeners. There is no evidence in the current art of any association of the ethoxylated agents with the elimination and / or reduction of linting associated with the polymeric thickeners / emulsifiers. The inventors have shown herein that a direct emulsion cosmetic composition that has a potential for linting on the skin (caused by the polymeric thickeners / emulsifiers) can be improved by the reduction or elimination of linting upon the inclusion of ethoxylated agents as described herein.
[0038] According to the various embodiments, it is envisaged to exclude all or part of the following ingredients from the fluff-resistant cosmetic compositions used according to the invention: gellan and other gelling agents, waxes, vegetable butters in an amount greater than about 5% by weight, relative to the total weight of the fluff-resistant cosmetic composition, and C16 saturated alcohols / fatty acids present in an amount greater than about 5% by weight, relative to the total weight of the fluff-resistant cosmetic composition.

[0121] [EXAMPLE 2: In vitro evaluation of fluffing
[0122] A simple oil-in-water emulsion was made (BASE, as shown in TABLE 2), and a variety of polymeric thickeners were added each with water and with one each of water controls and a variety of RM amphiphilic liquids having an HLB of 8.5 to 16, including formulations containing one or more ethoxylated agents according to the disclosure to make 40 separate test formulations. In each case, the final concentration of the polymeric thickener was in an amount known to produce linting.
[0123] The test protocol for in vitro fluffing is as follows:
[0124] Test protocol using Skin FX: a. Heat a sheet of BioSkin to 35°C on a controlled heating plate. b. Apply 0.1 ml of a formula to a small area of BioSkin. c. Rub the product in 15 circular motions in 15 seconds. d. Wait 15 seconds. e. Rub the product again using 15 circular movements for 15 seconds. f. Wait 2.5 minutes. g. Quickly rub the area where the product was applied 5 times. h. Note any fluffing. i. Repeat for all formulas in a different area of the BioSkin.

[0132] As shown in TABLE 5, laureth-4 and oleth-10 prevented linting with all eight polymeric thickeners tested. Formulations including only the RM amphiphilic liquid having an HLB of 8.5 to 16 (i.e., without any ethoxylated agents) did not completely eliminate linting when used with two of the eight polymeric thickeners, and similarly, the PEG glyceryl cocoate RM amphiphilic liquid having an HLB of 8.5 to 16 (i.e., without any ethoxylated agents) did not completely eliminate linting when used with three of the eight polymeric thickeners. Each of the laureth and oleth forms of the ethoxylated agents, each of which is a linear ethoxylated fatty alcohol (each containing only one -OH or -COOH present in the starting alcohol or acid), completely eliminated linting with all polymeric thickeners. In contrast, each of the polyglyceryl cocoate and glyceryl forms of PEG, which are nonlinear RM amphiphilic liquids with HLBs of 8.5–16 and structurally dissimilar to the EAs employed in the study, did not beneficially decrease or eliminate linting.

[0136] EXAMPLE 4: In vivo evaluation of fluffing
[0137] To demonstrate the benefit of the inventive composition in vivo, the inventive formulation and a comparative formulation (without emulsifier) were tested for fluffing on human subjects according to a protocol similar to the in vitro test described above. The ethoxylated emulsifying agent included in the comparative formulations was laureth-4, present at 0% (comparative / baseline), 0.5% and 1% (inventive).
[0138] The results showed that in human subjects, the formula containing the most laureth-4 (1%) showed the least linting. The formula without laureth-4 showed the most linting. The formula with the lowest amount of laureth-4 (0.5%) showed intermediate linting, but was improved compared to baseline.
