Description

Title of the invention: HAIR TREATMENT COMPOSITION SCOPE OF DISCLOSURE

[0001] The present disclosure relates to hair treatment compositions and methods for treating hair with the hair treatment compositions. BACKGROUND

[0002] Many consumers desire to use cosmetic and care compositions that enhance the appearance of keratinous substrates such as hair, for example by changing the color, style and / or shape of the hair, and / or by imparting various cosmetic properties to the hair, such as shine and conditioning. Hair can become dry or damaged for a variety of reasons, for example, exposure to the elements, poor diet, mechanical treatments (e.g., brushing the hair), styling treatments using chemicals, dyeing, heat, diet, etc. Even cleansing products can remove the hair's natural oils, causing dryness that can lead to a dull appearance and split ends.

[0003] Chemical treatments include, for example, bleaching and coloring hair, perms, waving products, and relaxer treatments (straightening treatments). These chemical treatments alter the appearance of the hair by changing its physical structure, which inevitably causes some degree of damage to the hair. Environmental factors, such as salt water, sun, and heat, are also known to damage hair. Damaged hair is characterized by unnatural changes in the protein structure of individual hair strands or shafts. The damage results in split ends, dry, straw-like hair, hair that breaks easily, and hair that “frizzes” and is unmanageable. Because the visible portion of the hair is dead, it lacks the ability to regenerate.There are many over-the-counter and in-salon treatments that claim to repair damaged hair. These include conditioners, hot oil treatments, hydrolyzed proteins, vitamin formulations, and extracts of exotic fruits, leaves, or roots. However, these treatments only provide limited improvement to the hair. Therefore, there is a search for hair repair technologies that can restore hair's properties to their natural level.

[0004] The popularity and use of oils for treating dry hair has increased due to their effectiveness and simplicity. Oils commonly Treatments used include olive oil, mineral oil, avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, rice bran oil, and coconut oil. However, these treatments can leave hair feeling greasy. In addition, the effects are usually not visible after more than several hours (e.g., 8 hours) of treatment, and multiple treatments are usually required, making the treatment time-consuming and laborious.

[0005] There continues to be a need to provide improved hair manageability, for example, improved hair alignment, reduction of unwanted volume (including reduced frizz), and increased shine. There is also a need to develop hair care products that can provide other benefits at the same time, in addition to the care and conditioning benefits, such as styling, volume, shaping, and curl definition (for curly or wavy hair). SUMMARY OF DISCLOSURE

[0006] The present disclosure relates to hair treatment compositions and methods that provide beneficial effects to hair. For example, the hair treatment compositions improve cosmetic attributes such as softness, shine, conditioning, and healthy appearance. The hair treatment compositions include cationic polymers and nonionic polymers; and include citric acid, a salt thereof, or a combination thereof. The inventors have discovered that the ratio of cationic polymers to nonionic polymers and citric acid, a salt thereof, or a combination thereof, influences the stability and desirable cosmetic properties of the compositions.

[0236] The compositions of Example 2 were subjected to stability studies. The stability of the compositions was visually assessed during the initial manufacture of the composition (To). The compositions were again evaluated after one week of freeze-thaw testing (1W FT). The compositions were placed in a stability chamber and subjected to temperature fluctuations at 12-hour intervals. For 12 hours, the compositions were held at -10°C. For the next 12 hours, the compositions were held at 25°C. The cycle was repeated 7 times (for 1 week). The compositions were evaluated separately after 8 weeks of storage at 4°C (8W 45°C), and after 8 weeks of storage at 45°C (8W 4°C). The results are shown in the table below.

[0243] As shown above, inventive composition A was stable under all test conditions. None of the comparative compositions were stable under all test conditions, except for comparative composition C-7. Example 4 (Sensory data)

[0244] The compositions of Example 2 that were at least initially stable were tested to determine their benefits to hair. Strands of heavily bleached Caucasian hair (SA40, 2.7 g, 27 cm) were used for testing. Equal amounts of each composition tested (approximately 1.2 grams) were applied to damp strands of hair, massaged into the hair, and left on the hair for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the compositions were rinsed from the strands of hair with room temperature tap water. After removing excess water from the strands of hair, the strands were washed with a standard base shampoo. After washing, the strands were first towel-dried and then thoroughly dried using a hair dryer. Throughout this process, the expert evaluators tested the strands of hair for various effects sensory: wet softness, wet combing, dry softness, dry combing, dry strength, and dry alignment. Specifically, the evaluators determined whether the sensory effects were better than the reference (inventive composition A), worse than the reference, or substantially identical to the reference. The results are presented in the table below.

[0253] Inventive composition A gave the most balanced performance on wet and dry hair, i.e., it performed best across all attributes tested. Not all comparative compositions succeeded in providing a full spectrum of improvements. For example, comparative composition C7 showed improvements in dry strength and combability, but resulted in significant reductions in dry strength and alignment. The inferiority in dry alignment gives the impression that the hair is dry and weakened, which is unfavorable to consumers. The comprehensive and balanced nature of the various attributes provided to the hair by the inventive composition A is significant and surprisingly superior to that provided by the comparative compositions. Definitions

[0254] As used herein, the terms "comprising," "having," and "including" (or "comprise," "have," and "include") are used in their open and non-limiting sense. The phrase "consisting essentially of" limits the scope of a claim to the specified materials or steps and to those that do not materially affect the fundamental and novel features of the claimed invention.

[0255] The terms "a," "an," and "the" are understood to encompass both the plural and the singular. Thus, the term "a mixture of" is interchangeable with "mixtures of." Throughout the disclosure, the phrase "a mixture thereof" is used, following a list of elements as shown in the following example where the letters A through F represent the elements: "one or more elements selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, or mixtures thereof." The phrase "a mixture thereof" does not require that the mixture include all of A, B, C, D, E, and F (although all of A, B, C, D, E, and F may be included). Rather, it indicates that a mixture of two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F may be included. In other words, it is equivalent to the expression "one or more elements selected from A, B, C, D, E, F, and a mixture of any two or more elements from A, B, C, D, E and F".

[0256] Similarly, the term "a salt thereof" also refers to "salts thereof." Thus, when the disclosure refers to "a member selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt thereof, or mixtures thereof," it indicates that one or more of A, B, C, D, and F may be included, one or more of a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included, or a mixture of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included.

[0257] Salts mentioned throughout the disclosure may include salts having a counterion such as an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or ammonium counterion. This list of counterions is not, however, limiting.

[0258] The expression “one or more” means “at least one” and therefore includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.

[0259] The term “plurality” means “more than one” or “two or more.”

[0260] Some of the various categories of components identified may overlap. In such cases where an overlap may exist and the composition / product includes two overlapping components (or more than two overlapping components), an overlapping component does not represent more than one component. For example, a component such as a fatty ester may fall within the definition of a "fatty compound" and in that of an “emulsifier”. If a particular composition / product requires both a fatty compound component and an emulsifier component, a single fatty ester may serve solely as the fatty compound or as the emulsifier (a single fatty ester cannot serve as both the fatty compound and the emulsifier).

[0261] All percentages, parts and ratios set forth herein are based on the total weight of the compositions of the present invention, unless otherwise indicated.

[0262] An “alkyl radical” is a saturated, linear or branched hydrocarbon group, in particular CrC8, more particularly C1-C6, more preferably C1-C4, such as methyl, ethyl, isopropyl and tert-butyl;

[0263] An “alkoxy radical” is an alkyloxy in which the alkyl is as described above;

[0264] An “alkenyl radical” is an unsaturated, linear or branched hydrocarbon group, in particular C2-C8, more particularly C2-C6, preferably C2-C4, such as ethylenyl, propylenyl;

[0265] An “alkylene radical” is a divalent, linear or branched, CrC8, in particular Ci-C6, preferably Ci-C4, saturated hydrocarbon group, such as methylene, ethylene or propylene.

[0266] All ranges and values described as used herein are inclusive and combinable. For example, any value or point described herein that falls within a range described herein may serve as a minimum or maximum value to derive a subrange, etc. Furthermore, all ranges provided are intended to include each specific range within the given ranges, as well as any combination of subranges therein. Thus, a range of 1-5 specifically includes points 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as subranges such as 2-5, 3-5, 2-3, 2-4, 1-4, etc.; and points 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 include ranges and subranges of 1-5, 2-5, 3-5, 2-3, 2-4, 1-4, etc.

[0267] Other than in the working examples, or unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing amounts of ingredients and / or reaction conditions are understood to be modified by "about," whether or not expressly indicated. Furthermore, all numbers are intended to represent exact figures as additional embodiments, whether or not modified by "about." For example, "an amount of about 1%" includes an amount of exactly 1%. In another example, "an amount of 1%" includes an amount of about 1%. The term "about" is generally understood to encompass a range within + / - 10% of the stated number, and is intended to cover amounts of + / - 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 6%, 7%, 8%, 9%, and 10%.

[0268] The term "surfactants" includes salts of surfactants, even if they are not explicitly mentioned. In other words, whenever the disclosure refers to a surfactant, it is understood that the salts of the surfactant are also included in the to the extent that such salts exist, even though the disclosure may not specifically refer to a salt (or may not refer to a salt in every instance throughout the disclosure), for example, by using language such as "a salt thereof" or "salts thereof." Sodium and potassium are common cations that form salts with surfactants. However, other cations, such as ammonium ions or alkanolammonium ions, such as monoethanolammonium or triethanolammonium ions, may also form surfactant salts.

[0269] The term "substantially free" or "essentially free" as used herein means that the specific material may be present in small amounts that do not materially affect the fundamental and novel features of the claimed invention. For example, there may be less than 2% by weight of a specific material added to a composition, based on the total weight of the compositions (provided that an amount less than 2% by weight does not materially affect the fundamental and novel features of the claimed invention). Similarly, the compositions may include less than 2% by weight, less than 1.5% by weight, less than 1% by weight, less than 0.5% by weight, less than 0.1% by weight, less than 0.05% by weight, or less than 0.01% by weight, or none of the specified material.The term "substantially free" or "essentially free" as used herein may also mean that the specific material is not added to the composition but may still be present in a starting material that is included in the composition.

[0270] Furthermore, any components that are positively presented in the present disclosure may be negatively excluded from the claims, e.g., a claimed composition may be "free", "essentially free" (or "substantially free") of one or more components that are positively presented in the present disclosure.

[0271] All publications and patent applications cited in this disclosure are hereby incorporated by reference, and for all purposes, as if each individual publication or patent application were specifically and individually indicated as being incorporated by reference. In the event of any inconsistency between this disclosure and any publication or patent application incorporated herein by reference, this disclosure shall prevail.
