Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Cleaning compositions and methods of use technical field
[0001] This disclosure relates to compositions for the treatment of keratinous materials, for example for cleaning keratinous materials such as hair, and methods for using the compositions. BACKGROUND
[0002] Conventional personal care cleansing compositions, such as shampoo, shower gel, facial cleanser, hand soap, etc., typically use sulfate-based surfactants, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth ether sulfate (SLES). These surfactants are commonly used because they have good foaming and cleansing properties, can be thickened easily, and are relatively inexpensive. However, there is increasing concern in the market about the negative effects of these or other sulfate-based surfactants, or surfactants containing sulfates, on the skin and body. For example, sulfate-based surfactants tend to dry out hair and skin, strip color from colored hair, and break down proteins such as keratin, and can cause skin and eye irritation. In addition, SLES may contain dioxanes, by-products generated in the manufacturing process, which are considered carcinogenic at fairly high levels.
[0003] Silicones are commonly used in personal care products for their conditioning and cosmetic effects. For example, silicones provide a protective layer on the hair, making it easier to detangle and comb, while also giving it softness and shine. However, silicones can build up on the hair layer by layer, which can weigh it down and make it look greasy. In addition, silicones do not degrade easily, and therefore their use in personal care products raises environmental concerns. It is therefore desirable to maximize the positive properties provided by silicone and minimize the negative effects on the environment and on hair buildup. One way to achieve this is to limit, or even eliminate, silicones from cleansing formulations wherever possible.
[0004] Furthermore, consumers want natural compositions for personal care products such as hair and skin cleansers. There is an increasing demand for sustainable, safe, and environmentally friendly "green" compositions that minimize the use of silicones, by Examples include products that are free or essentially free of silicones and other synthetic chemicals used for cleaning and / or caring for keratinous materials, including hair and skin, yet still offer desirable overall performance and high safety. However, such "green" formulations can be expensive to produce because their ingredients must come from natural sources such as plants, as opposed to industrially produced, large-scale chemicals.
[0005] Consequently, cleansing compositions that are free of sulfate-based surfactants and essentially free of silicones, or that contain limited amounts of silicones, are increasingly sought after by consumers. However, developing suitable cleansing product formulations without the use of sulfate-based surfactants, such as anionic sulfate-based (“sulfate-free”) surfactants, presents a challenge. For example, most existing sulfate-free hair cleansers lather poorly, are opaque, and do not thicken easily. Traditional methods for increasing the viscosity of these formulations, such as incorporating a salt, are not effective with sulfate-free surfactants.
[0006] It is therefore necessary to overcome the challenges described above in order to develop cleansing compositions, in particular cleansing compositions for hair, which meet the growing consumer demands for natural and sulfate-free cleansing compositions which contain limited amounts of silicone, which also offer satisfactory cosmetic properties.
[0007] It has now been discovered in a surprising way that, by using a unique combination of at least one amphoteric surfactant, an anionic surfactant system together with sodium chloride having a specific anionic surfactant system to sodium chloride ratio range, and optionally a cationic compound, a cleansing composition, in particular a hair cleansing composition that is free from sulfate-based surfactants and minimizes the use of silicones, for example is free or substantially free from silicone compounds, can be prepared, the resulting cleansing composition requiring a lower amount of surfactant to produce excellent cleansing and abundant and creamy foaming properties, as well as good wet and dry cosmetic properties such as detangling and softness, and is environmentally friendly. For example, in some embodiments, the compositions according to this disclosure may range from a thickened liquid to a thick, gel-like texture. Consequently, in some cases, the viscosity of a composition disclosed herein may be from approximately 800 cPs to approximately 20,000 cPs, as well as from approximately 800 cPs to approximately 15,000 cPs, 800 cPs to approximately 12,000 cPs, from approximately 1,000 cPs to approximately 15,000 cPs, from approximately 1,000 cPs to approximately 12,000 cPs, from approximately 1,500 cPs to approximately 15,000 cPs, from approximately 1,500 cPs to approximately 12,000 cPs, from approximately 2,000 cPs to approximately 15,000 cPs, or from approximately 2,000 cPs to approximately 12,000 cPs, when measured at 25°C. using a Brookfield DV-II+ Pro screw-cosimeter, RV spindle at 10 rpm.
[0130] The compositions may have a pH less than or equal to 9, such as approximately 3 to about 8, from about 4 to about 7, or from about 5 to about 6.5.
[0131] In various embodiments, the compositions according to this disclosure are stable, i.e. no phase shift or significant change in pH or viscosity is observed when stored at a temperature ranging from about 4°C to about 45°C, preferably from about 10°C to about 37°C, more preferably from about 20°C to about 30°C, for at least about 8 weeks.
[0132] In at least some embodiments, the compositions according to the disclosure may be soft, exhibit good foaming properties, good detangling and combing properties, good antistatic properties, and / or good stability. II. Processes
[0133] This disclosure also relates to methods of cleansing and / or conditioning keratinous materials, including hair, skin, and / or scalp, with the compositions disclosed herein. Without limitation, the methods of cleansing and / or conditioning keratinous materials according to the disclosure may include applying a sufficient, or an effective, amount of a composition disclosed herein to keratinous material, such as hair, skin, or scalp, which may be wet, damp, or dry, optionally allowing the composition to remain on the keratinous material for a desired duration, and optionally rinsing the composition from the keratinous material. The composition may optionally be foamed before application to the keratinous materials, for example, in the hands, or may be foamed while on the keratinous materials.
[0134] Due to the cleansing and conditioning properties of the compositions, in some cases the compositions may be referred to as a "shampoo," a "conditioning shampoo," or an "all-in-one conditioning and shampoo composition." The compositions may also be both a shampoo and a face and / or body wash, or a face and / or body wash. In some embodiments, the compositions of this disclosure are particularly useful for cleansing and conditioning hair. In addition, the compositions provide a variety of desirable cosmetic and styling benefits for hair, for example, softness without weighing it down, detangling, and anti-frizz. As such, the compositions are useful in hair cleansing processes, hair conditioning processes, and processes for imparting softness to hair. detangling and / or frizz control. Therefore, this disclosure includes hair treatment processes using the compositions described in this disclosure.
[0135] These processes typically include applying an effective amount of an instant-release composition to the hair, allowing the composition to remain on the hair for a certain time, and then rinsing the composition from the hair, followed by allowing the hair to air dry or drying the hair with a hairdryer that blows air through the hair and accelerates drying. Usually, the composition is simply left on the hair for a sufficient time to incorporate it into the hair, for example, by lathering the composition in the hair with the hands.
[0136] The duration is sufficient for the composition to interact with the hair and any dirt, oil, contamination, etc., that may be present on the hair, so that upon rinsing, the dirt, oil, contamination, etc., can be effectively removed from the hair and the conditioning agents in the composition can interact with the hair to condition it. Thus, the composition can be left on the hair for approximately 5 seconds to approximately 30 minutes, approximately 5 seconds to approximately 15 minutes, approximately 5 seconds to approximately 10 minutes, approximately 5 seconds to approximately 5 minutes, approximately 10 seconds to approximately 5 minutes, or approximately 10 seconds to approximately 3 minutes. The composition is then rinsed from the hair, and the hair is allowed to dry.
[0137] As is common practice when using shampoos and / or conditioning compositions, hair may be wetted or rinsed with water before applying a composition described in this document. Having water already present in the hair can be helpful in creating lather when applying the compositions because the water interacts with the surfactants.
[0138] Having described in detail the numerous embodiments of the present invention, it is evident that modifications and variations are possible without departing from the scope of the disclosure defined in the appended claims. Furthermore, it should be noted that all the examples in this disclosure, while illustrating numerous embodiments of the disclosure, are provided by way of non-limiting examples and should therefore not be considered as limiting the various aspects thus illustrated. It is understood that all definitions given herein are given solely within the context of this disclosure.
[0139] Unless expressly stated otherwise, no process presented herein is intended to be interpreted as requiring its steps to be performed in a specific order. Accordingly, where a process claim does not expressly specify an order for its steps or where it is not specified Although it is stated in the claims or descriptions that the steps must be limited to a specific order, it is by no means intended that a particular order be inferred therefrom.
[0140] Apart from the operational examples, or unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing quantities of ingredients and / or reaction conditions should be understood as being modified in all cases by the term "approximately", meaning to within 10% of the number indicated (for example, "approximately 10%" means 9%-1%, "approximately 2%" means 1.8%-2.2%, and so on).
[0141] It should be understood that the precise numerical values used in the specification, including the examples and claims, constitute further embodiments of the invention and are intended to include all ranges that can be reduced to any disclosed endpoint within the provided sample ranges and values. Efforts have been made to ensure the accuracy of the disclosed numerical values. However, any measured value may inherently contain some errors resulting from the standard deviation found in its respective measurement technique.
[0142] In this document, the use of the singular forms "a," "an," "the," "the," and "at least one" is understood to encompass both the plural and the singular, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The articles "a" and "an," as used in this document, mean one or more when applied to any particular embodiment of the present invention described in the specification and the claims. Thus, the use of "a" and "an" does not limit the meaning to a single particular embodiment unless such a limitation is specifically indicated, and the expression "one or more" means "at least one" and includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations. As used in this document, the article "all" means one, some, or all indiscriminately, regardless of quantity.
[0143] The term "a salt of it" also refers to "salts of it". By way of illustrative example, the disclosure refers to "an element selected from the group consisting of, for example, A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of it, or mixtures of these", it indicates that one or more of, for example, A, B, C, D, and F may be included, one or more of, for example, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E and a salt of F may be included, or a mixture of, for example, any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E and a salt of F may be included.
[0144] Throughout the disclosure, if the terms "their mixtures", "a mixture of these", "a combination of these", or variants thereof are used following a list of items, as shown in the following example where the letters A to F represent the items: "one or more items selected from the group consisting "A, B, C, D, E, F, or mixtures thereof" does not require that the mixture include all of A, B, C, D, E, and F (although all of A, B, C, D, E, and F may be included). Rather, it indicates that a mixture of two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F may be included. In other words, it is equivalent to the phrase "one or more elements chosen from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, and a mixture of two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F."
[0145] “At least one”, as used in this document, means one or more and This therefore includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.
[0146] The term "including" (and its grammatical variations) as used in this document is used in the inclusive sense of "having" or "including" (or "include", "have" and "include"), and are used in their broad and non-limiting sense.
[0147] The expression "consisting essentially of", as used in this document, refers to the materials or steps specifically mentioned, but may include materials or steps which do not materially affect the fundamental and innovative characteristics of the compositions or their use.
[0148] “Active substance” or “weight” as used in this document with regard to concerns the quantity as a percentage of an ingredient or raw material, refers to an activity of 100% of the ingredient or raw material.
[0149] All percentages and ratios are calculated by weight unless otherwise stated, and unless otherwise stated in this document, all percentages and ratios of components are by weight relative to the total weight of the final composition.
[0150] For the purposes of this disclosure, it should be noted that, to provide a more concise description, some of the quantitative expressions given herein are not qualified by the term "approximately." It is understood that, whether the term "approximately" is used explicitly or implicitly, each quantity given herein is intended to refer to the actual value given, and is also intended to refer to the approximation of that given value that would be reasonably deduced based on ordinary competence in the art, including approximations due to the experimental and / or measurement conditions of that given value. All ranges and quantities indicated herein are intended to include subranges and amounts using any point indicated as the endpoint. Thus, a range of "1% to 10%, like 2% to 8%, like 3% to 5%" is supposed to encompass ranges of "1% to 8%", "1% to 5%", "2% to 10%", and so on.All numbers, quantities, ranges, etc., are assumed to be modified by the term "approximately," whether or not it is explicitly stated. Similarly, a given range of "approximately 1% to 10%" is assumed to have its 1% and 10% bounds modified by the term "approximately." The term "approximately" is used in this document to indicate a difference ranging from 1% to 10%. up to + / - 10% of the stated number, such as + / - 9%, + / - 8%, + / - 7%, + / - 6%, + / - 5%, + / - 4%, + / - 3%, + / - 2%, or + / - 1%. Similarly, all range boundaries are understood to be disclosed individually, so that, for example, a range of 1:2 to 2:1 is understood to disclose a ratio of both 1:2 and 2:1.
[0151] The term “antioxidant” refers to a chemical compound, enzyme, or other organic molecule that prevents free radicals from causing the oxidation of molecules such as those found in keratinous materials. By reacting with the oxidant, the antioxidant protects these molecules from damage. Examples of antioxidants include, but are not limited to, polyphenols, vitamins A, C, and E, carotenoids, and certain minerals. In some specific examples, antioxidants include ascorbic acid, dihydrochalone, zinc PCA, baicalin, ferulic acid, pine bark extract, polydatin, and ellagic acid.
[0152] In this document, the terms "application of a composition to keratinous fibers" and "application of a composition to hair" and variations of these expressions are intended to mean bringing the fibers or hair into contact with at least one of the compositions of the invention, in any manner whatsoever.
[0153] “Cosmetically acceptable” means compatible with all keratinous tissue. By For example, "cosmetically acceptable support" means a support that is compatible with all keratinous tissue.
[0154] The "keratinous material", as used in this document, includes, but is not limited to, skin, hair and nails, and also includes "keratinous substrate", "keratinous tissue" and "keratinous fibers", which may be of human keratinous material, and may be selected from, for example, hair or fur, such as head hair, or hair including eyelashes or body hair.
[0155] As used in this document, the terms "application of a composition to keratinous materials" and "application of a composition to hair," and variations thereof, are intended to mean the contacting of keratinous materials, including hair and skin, with at least one of the compositions in the disclosure, in any manner. This may also mean the contacting of keratinous materials in an effective quantity.
[0156] As used in this document, the term "conditioning" means imparting to keratin fibers at least one property selected from combability, moisture retention, luster, shine, and softness. The state of conditioning can be assessed by any means known in the art, such as, for example, measuring and comparing the combability of treated and untreated hair in terms of combing work and perception by the consumer.
[0157] As used in this document, "cosmetic composition" encompasses many types of compositions for application to keratinous materials such as skin or hair, for example, hair lotions, hair creams, hair gels, hair conditioners, hair masks, etc., which can be used as leave-in or rinse-out treatments or products.
[0158] As used in this document, the term "organic" means a material that is produced substantially without or essentially without the use of synthetic materials. The terms "substantially without" or "essentially without" as used in this document mean that the specific material may be used in a manufacturing process in small quantities that do not materially affect the fundamental and innovative characteristics of the compositions according to the disclosure. The terms "substantially without" or "essentially without" as used in this document may also mean that the specific material is not used in a manufacturing process but may still be present in a raw material that is included in the composition.
[0159] As used in this disclosure, the term "salts" may include salts having a counterion such as an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or ammonium counterion. This list of counterions is not exhaustive.
[0160] Unless specifically stated otherwise, the terms "substantially free" or The terms "essentially free," which are used interchangeably, mean that the specific material may be present in small quantities that do not materially affect the fundamental and innovative characteristics of the compositions as disclosed. For example, there may be less than 2% by weight of a specific material added to a composition, based on the total weight of the compositions (provided that an amount less than 2% by weight does not materially affect the fundamental and innovative characteristics of the compositions as disclosed). Similarly, compositions may include less than 2%, less than 1.5%, less than 1%, less than 0.5%, less than 0.1%, less than 0.05%, or less than 0.01%, or none of the specified materials.Furthermore, all components that are positively presented in this disclosure may be negatively excluded from the claims; for example, a claimed composition may be "free," "substantially free" (or "significantly free") of one or more components that are positively presented in this disclosure. The term "substantially free" or "essentially free" as used herein may also mean that the specific material is not added to the composition but may still be present in a raw material that... is included in the composition in an amount that does not materially affect the fundamental and innovative characteristics of the compositions as disclosed.
[0161] As used in this document, the term "sulfate-based surfactant" also means "sulfate-containing surfactant." Thus, the expression "essentially free of sulfate-based surfactant" also means "essentially free of sulfate-containing surfactant."
[0162] As used in this document, the term "surfactants", as well as any specifically identified surfactant, includes salts of surfactants even if not explicitly mentioned.
[0163] In this document, the term "surfactant system" refers to a combination of different surfactants. For example, the expression "anionic surfactant system" refers to a combination of two or more different anionic surfactants.
[0164] In this document, the term "synthetic" refers to a material that is not of natural origin. The terms "natural" and "of natural origin" mean a material of natural origin, such as derived from plants, that cannot be subsequently modified chemically or physically. "Of plant origin" means that the material is derived from a plant.
[0165] As used in this document, the term "treat" (and its grammatical variations) refers to the application of the compositions of this disclosure to the surface of keratinous materials, such as hair. EXAMPLES
