Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Cleaning compositions and methods of use Technical field
[0001] The present disclosure relates to compositions for treating keratinous materials, for example for cleaning keratinous materials such as hair, and methods of using the compositions. BACKGROUND
[0002] Conventional personal care cleansing compositions, such as shampoo, body wash, facial cleanser, hand soap, etc., typically use sulfate-based surfactants, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth ether sulfate (SLES). These surfactants are commonly used because they have good foaming and cleansing properties, can be thickened easily, and are relatively inexpensive. However, there is growing market concern about the negative effects of these or other sulfate-based surfactants, or sulfate-containing surfactants, on the skin and body. For example, sulfate-based surfactants tend to dry out hair and skin, strip dyes from color-treated hair, and break down proteins such as keratin, and can cause skin and eye irritation.Additionally, SLES may contain dioxanes, by-products generated in the manufacturing process, which are considered carcinogenic at fairly high levels.
[0003] Silicones are commonly used in personal care products for their conditioning and cosmetic effects. For example, silicones provide a protective layer on hair that makes it easy to detangle and comb, while also providing softness and shine. However, silicones can build up on hair layer by layer, which can weigh hair down and make it greasy. In addition, silicones do not degrade easily, and therefore, their use in personal care products raises environmental concerns. It is therefore desirable to maximize the positive properties provided by silicone and minimize the negative environmental effects and buildup on hair. One way to achieve this is to limit or even eliminate silicones from cleansing compositions, where possible.
[0004] In addition, consumers desire natural compositions for personal care products such as hair and skin cleansing compositions. There is an increased demand for sustainable, safe and environmentally friendly "green" compositions that minimize the use of silicones, e.g. example that are free or essentially free of silicones, as well as other synthetic chemicals for the cleaning and / or care of keratinous materials, including hair and skin, and which nevertheless offer good overall performance and high safety. However, such "green" compositions can be expensive to produce because their materials must come from natural sources such as plants, as opposed to chemicals produced industrially in large volumes.
[0005] Therefore, cleansing compositions that are free of sulfate-based surfactants and substantially free of silicones or that include limited amounts of silicones are increasingly sought after by consumers. However, developing suitable cleansing product formulations without the use of sulfate-based surfactants such as anionic sulfate-based surfactants ("sulfate-free") is challenging. For example, most existing sulfate-free hair cleansing products lather poorly, are opaque, and do not thicken readily. Traditional methods for increasing the viscosity of these formulations, such as incorporating a salt, are not effective with sulfate-free surfactants.
[0006] It is therefore necessary to overcome the challenges described above to develop cleansing compositions, particularly hair cleansing compositions, which meet the increasing consumer demands for natural and sulfate-free cleansing compositions that contain limited amounts of silicone, which also offer satisfactory cosmetic properties.
[0007] It has now been surprisingly discovered that, by using a unique combination of at least one amphoteric surfactant, an anionic surfactant system together with sodium chloride having a specific ratio range of anionic surfactant system to sodium chloride, an alkyl(poly)glucoside and optionally a cationic compound, a cleansing composition, in particular a hair cleansing composition which is free or substantially free of sulfate-based surfactants and minimizes the use of silicones, e.g. is free or substantially free of silicone compounds, can be prepared, the resulting cleansing composition requiring a lower amount of surfactant to produce excellent cleansing and rich, creamy lathering properties, as well as good wet and dry cosmetic properties such as detangling and softness, and is environmentally friendly. [0142] The compositions may be transparent, semi-transparent, or opaque, and their viscosities may vary but may be similar to or greater than those of conventional cleansing, shampooing, and / or conditioning compositions. For example, in some embodiments, the compositions of the present disclosure may range from a thickened liquid to a thick, gel-like texture. Accordingly, in some instances, the viscosity of a composition disclosed herein may be from about 800 cPs to about 20,000 cPs, such as from about 800 cPs to about 15,000 cPs, 800 cPs to about 12,000 cPs, from about 1000 cPs to about 15,000 cPs, from about 1000 cPs to about 12,000 cPs, from about 1500 cPs to about 15,000 cPs, from about 1500 cPs to about 12,000 cPs, from about 2000 cPs to about 15,000 cPs, or from about 2000 cPs to approximately 12,000 cPs, when measured at 25°C using a Brookfield DV-II+ Pro viscometer, RV spindle at 10 rpm.
[0143] The compositions may have a pH of less than or equal to 9, such as from about 3 to about 8, from about 4 to about 7, or from about 5 to about 6.5, or from about 5 to about 6.
[0144] In various embodiments, the compositions according to the present disclosure are stable, i.e., no phase shift or significant change in pH or viscosity is observed when stored at a temperature ranging from about 4°C to about 45°C, preferably from about 10°C to about 37°C, more preferably from about 20°C to about 30°C, for at least about 8 weeks.
[0145] In at least some embodiments, the compositions of the disclosure may be mild, exhibit good lathering properties, good detangling and combing properties, good antistatic properties, and / or good stability. The compositions may provide one or more properties such as softness, conditioning, excellent detangling, anti-frizz, ease of styling and / or combing, antistatic, clean and / or smooth appearance, without weighting. II. Methods
[0146] The present disclosure also relates to methods of cleansing and / or conditioning keratinous materials, including hair, skin and / or scalp, with the compositions disclosed herein. Without limitation, methods of cleansing and / or conditioning keratinous materials according to the disclosure may include applying a sufficient amount, or an effective amount, of a composition disclosed herein to keratinous material, such as hair, skin or scalp, which may be wet, damp or dry, optionally allowing the composition to remain on the keratinous material for a desired period of time, and optionally rinsing the composition from the keratinous material. The composition may optionally be lathered prior to application to the keratinous materials, for example in the hands, or may be lathered while on the keratinous materials.
[0147] Due to the cleansing and conditioning properties of the compositions, in some instances, the compositions may be referred to as a “shampoo,” a “conditioning shampoo,” or an “all-in-one conditioning and shampoo composition.” The compositions may also be both a shampoo and a facial and / or body wash, or a facial and / or body wash. In some embodiments, the compositions of the present disclosure are particularly useful for cleansing and conditioning hair. In addition, the compositions provide a variety of benefits. cosmetic and styling properties desirable for hair, for example, weightless softness, detangling, and anti-frizz. As such, the compositions are useful in methods of cleansing hair, methods of conditioning hair, and methods of imparting softness, detangling, and / or frizz control to hair. Accordingly, the present disclosure encompasses methods of treating hair with the compositions of the present disclosure.
[0148] These methods typically include applying an effective amount of a composition of the instant disclosure to the hair, allowing the composition to remain on the hair for a period of time, and then rinsing the composition from the hair, followed by allowing the hair to air dry or drying the hair with a hair dryer that blows air through the hair and accelerates drying. Typically, the composition is simply left on the hair for a time sufficient to incorporate the composition into the hair, for example, by lathering the composition into the hair with the hands.
[0149] The duration is sufficient for the composition to interact with the hair and any dirt, oil, contamination, etc. that may exist on the hair so that upon rinsing, the dirt, oil, contamination, etc. can be effectively removed from the hair and the conditioning agents of the composition can interact with the hair to condition it. Thus, the composition can be left on the hair for about 5 seconds to about 30 minutes, about 5 seconds to about 15 minutes, about 5 seconds to about 10 minutes, about 5 seconds to about 5 minutes, about 10 seconds to about 5 minutes, or about 10 seconds to about 3 minutes. The composition is then rinsed from the hair, and the hair is allowed to dry.
[0150] As is common when using shampoos and / or conditioning compositions, the hair may be wet or rinsed with water prior to applying a composition described herein. Having water already in the hair may be helpful in creating lather when applying the compositions because the water interacts with the surfactants.
[0151] Having described in detail the numerous embodiments of the present invention, it will be apparent that modifications and variations are possible without departing from the scope of the disclosure defined in the appended claims. Further, it should be appreciated that all examples of the present disclosure, while illustrating numerous embodiments of the disclosure, are provided by way of non-limiting examples and therefore should not be construed as limiting the various aspects thus illustrated. It is understood that all definitions given herein are given solely within the scope of the present disclosure.
[0152] Unless otherwise expressly stated, it is in no way intended that any method disclosed herein be construed as requiring that its steps be performed in any specific order. Accordingly, where a method claim does not expressly state an order for its steps to be followed or where it is not specifically stated in the claims or descriptions that the steps are to be limited to a specific order, it is in no way intended that any particular order be inferred therefrom.
[0153] Outside of the working examples, or unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing quantities of ingredients and / or reaction conditions should be understood as being modified in all cases by the term "about", meaning to within 10% of the number indicated (for example, "about 10%" means 9%-11%, "about 2%" means 1.8%-2.2%, and so on).
[0154] It is to be understood that the precise numerical values used in the specification, including the examples and claims, constitute further embodiments of the invention, and are intended to include all ranges that can be reduced to any disclosed endpoint within the provided exemplary ranges and values. Efforts have been made to ensure the accuracy of the disclosed numerical values. However, any measured value may inherently contain certain errors resulting from the standard deviation found in its respective measurement technique.
[0155] In this document, the use of the singular forms "a", "an", "the", "the" and "at least one" is understood to encompass the plural as well as the singular, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The articles "a" and "an", as used herein, mean one or more when applied to any feature in the embodiments of the present invention described in the specification and claims. Thus, the use of "a" and "an" does not limit the meaning to a single feature, unless such a limit is specifically indicated, and the expression "one or more" means "at least one" and includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations. As used herein, the article "any" means one, some or all indiscriminately, regardless of the quantity.
[0156] The term "a salt thereof" also refers to "salts thereof." As an illustrative example, the disclosure refers to "a member selected from the group consisting of, for example, A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt thereof, or mixtures thereof," indicating that one or more of, for example, A, B, C, D, and F may be included, one or more of, for example, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included, or a mixture of, for example, any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included.
[0157] Throughout the disclosure, if the terms "mixtures thereof", "a mixture thereof", "a combination thereof" or variations thereof are used following a list of elements, as shown in the following example where the letters A through F represent the elements: "one or more elements selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, or mixtures thereof", the mixture need not include all of A, B, C, D, E and F (although all of A, B, C, D, E and F may be included). Rather, it indicates that a mixture of two or more of A, B, C, D, E and F may be included. In other words, it is equivalent to the phrase "one or more elements selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, and a mixture of two or more of A, B, C, D, E and F".
[0158] “At least one” as used herein means one or more and therefore includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.
[0159] The term "comprising" (and its grammatical variations) as used herein is used in the inclusive sense of "having" or "including" (or "comprise", "have" and "include"), and is used in its broad and non-limiting sense.
[0160] The term "consisting essentially of" as used herein refers to the materials or steps specifically mentioned, but may include materials or steps that do not materially affect the fundamental and novel characteristics of the compositions or their use.
[0161] “Active ingredient” or “weight” as used herein with respect to relates to the percentage quantity of an ingredient or raw material, refers to 100% activity of the ingredient or raw material.
[0162] All percentages and ratios are calculated by weight unless otherwise indicated, and unless otherwise indicated herein, all percentages and ratios of components are by weight relative to the total weight of the final composition.
[0163] For the purposes of this disclosure, it should be noted that to provide a more concise description, some of the quantitative expressions given herein are not qualified by the term "about." It is understood that, whether the term "about" is used explicitly or not, each quantity given herein is intended to refer to the actual value given, and it is also intended to refer to the approximation to that given value that would be reasonably inferred based on ordinary skill in the art, including approximations due to experimental and / or measurement conditions of that given value. All ranges and quantities given herein are intended to include subranges and amounts using any point indicated as the endpoint. So a range of "1% to 10%, like 2% to 8%, like 3% to 5%" is meant to encompass ranges of "1% to 8%", "1% to 5%", "2% to 10%", and so on.All numbers, . quantities, ranges, etc., are intended to be modified by the term "about," whether or not expressly stated. Similarly, a given range of "about 1% to 10%" is intended to have its 1% and 10% bounds modified by the term "about." The term "about" is used herein to indicate a difference of up to + / - 10% of the stated number, such as + / - 9%, + / - 8%, + / - 7%, + / - 6%, + / - 5%, + / - 4%, + / - 3%, + / - 2%, or + / - 1%. Similarly, all bounds of the ranges are understood to be individually disclosed, so that, for example, a range of 1:2 to 2:1 is understood to disclose a ratio of both 1:2 and 2:1.
[0164] The term "antioxidant" refers to a chemical compound, enzyme, or other organic molecule that prevents free radicals from causing oxidation of molecules such as those found in keratinous materials. The antioxidant, by reacting with the oxidant, protects these molecules from damage. Examples of antioxidants include, but are not limited to, polyphenols, vitamins A, C, E, carotenoids, and certain minerals. In some specific examples, antioxidants include ascorbic acid, dihydrochalone, zinc PCA, baicalin, ferulic acid, pine bark extract, polydatin, and ellagic acid.
[0165] As used herein, the terms "applying a composition to keratinous fibers" and "applying a composition to hair" and variations of these terms are intended to mean bringing the fibers or hair into contact with at least one of the compositions of the invention in any manner whatsoever.
[0166] “Cosmetically acceptable” means compatible with any keratinous tissue. By example, “cosmetically acceptable carrier” means a carrier that is compatible with any keratinous tissue.
[0167] “Keratinous material” as used herein includes, but is not limited to, skin, hair, and nails, and also includes “keratinous substrate,” “keratinous tissue,” and “keratinous fibers,” which may be human keratinous material, and may be selected from, for example, hair, such as head hair, or hair including eyelashes or body hair.
[0168] As used herein, the terms "applying a composition to keratinous materials" and "applying a composition to hair" and variations of these expressions are intended to mean contacting keratinous materials, including hair and skin, with at least one of the compositions of the disclosure, in any manner. It may also mean contacting the keratinous materials in an effective amount.
[0169] As used herein, the term "conditioning" means imparting to the keratinous fibers at least one property selected from ease of combability, moisture retention, luster, shine and softness. Conditioning may be assessed by any means known in the art, such as, for example, measuring and comparing the combability of treated and untreated hair in terms of combing effort and consumer perception.
[0170] As used herein, "cosmetic composition" encompasses many types of compositions for application to keratinous materials such as skin or hair, e.g., hair lotions, hair creams, hair gels, hair conditioners, hair masks, etc. which may be used as leave-in or rinse-out treatments or products.
[0171] As used herein, the term "organic" means a material that is produced substantially without or essentially without the use of synthetic materials. The term "substantially without" or "essentially without" as used herein means that the specific material may be used in a manufacturing process in small quantities that do not materially affect the fundamental and novel characteristics of the compositions according to the disclosure. The term "substantially without" or "essentially without" as used herein may also mean that the specific material is not used in a manufacturing process but may still be present in a starting material that is included in the composition.
[0172] As used herein, the term "salts" may include salts having a counterion such as an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or ammonium counterion. This list of counterions is not, however, limiting.
[0173] Unless otherwise specifically indicated, the terms “substantially free” or "Essentially free," which are used interchangeably, means that the specific material may be present in small amounts that do not materially affect the fundamental and novel characteristics of the compositions according to the disclosure. For example, there may be less than 2% by weight of a specific material added to a composition, based on the total weight of the compositions (provided that an amount less than 2% by weight does not materially affect the fundamental and novel characteristics of the compositions according to the disclosure). Similarly, the compositions may include less than 2%, less than 1.5%, less than 1%, less than 0.5%, less than 0.1%, less than 0.05%, or less than 0.01%, or none of the specified materials.Furthermore, any components that are positively presented in the present disclosure may be negatively excluded from the claims, e.g., a claimed composition may be "free," "essentially free" (or "substantially free") of one or more. components that are positively presented in the present disclosure. The term "substantially free" or "essentially free" as used herein may also mean that the specific material is not added to the composition but may still be present in a starting material that is included in the composition, in an amount that does not materially affect the fundamental and novel characteristics of the compositions according to the disclosure.
[0174] As used herein, the term "sulfate-based surfactant" also means "sulfate-containing surfactant." Thus, the term "substantially free of sulfate-based surfactant" also means "substantially free of sulfate-containing surfactant."
[0175] As used herein, the term "surfactants", as well as any specifically identified surfactant, includes salts of the surfactants even if not explicitly mentioned.
[0176] As used herein, the term "surfactant system" refers to a combination of different surfactants. For example, the term "anionic surfactant system" refers to a combination of two or more different anionic surfactants.
[0177] As used herein, the term "synthetic" means a material that is not of natural origin. The term "natural" and "naturally derived" means a material of natural origin, such as derived from plants, which also cannot be subsequently chemically or physically modified. "Plant-derived" means that the material comes from a plant.
[0178] As used herein, the term "treat" (and its grammatical variations) refers to the application of the compositions of the present disclosure to the surface of keratinous materials, such as hair. EXAMPLES
[0179] The following examples are intended to be non-limiting and explanatory in nature only. In the examples, the amounts are expressed as a percentage by weight (% by weight) of active ingredients, relative to the total weight of the composition.

Each of the inventive compositions 1A-1C had a pH in the range of 5-6.5, and viscosities in the range of about 1600-3400 centipoise (cPs) when measured at 25°C using a Brookfield DV-II+ Pro viscosimeter, RV spindle at 10 rpm.
[0183] Each of the inventive compositions 1A-1C demonstrated ease / speed in generating foam, good foam quality (creamy, lush and stable) and an abundance of foam.
[0184] Example 2 - Comparison with a comparative shampoo containing sulfate
[0185] To evaluate performance differences between the sulfate-free cleansing shampoos according to the disclosure and the sulfate-containing shampoos, the inventive composition IB of Table 1 above was tested on human volunteer hair against a commercially available sulfate-containing shampoo (Cl) having the ingredients listed in Table 2.
[0186] Commercial shampoo containing sulfate

[0188] Equal amounts of the inventive and comparative cleansing compositions were applied to opposite halves of a head of wet hair without pre-treatment and worked into a lather with water, the hair was rinsed, and then blow-dried.
[0189] As evaluated, the performance of inventive composition IB resulted in greater softness of lather during application, improved softness on wet hair during and after rinsing, greater ease of blow-drying, and more manageability, body, softness, volume, and sealed ends once dry, compared to composition C1. In addition, inventive composition IB surprisingly demonstrated ease / speed of generating lather, good lather quality (creamy, lush, and stable), and an abundance of lather comparable to that of composition C1, despite the absence of sulfates.
[0190] Based on the above examples, it has been demonstrated that the compositions according to the disclosure surprisingly provide a sulfate-free shampoo with excellent lather and performance properties.
[0191] It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications and variations may be made to the compositions and methods according to the disclosure without departing from the spirit or scope of the disclosure. Thus, it is intended that the disclosure cover such modifications and variations and their equivalents.
