AI Technical Summary
Aqueous cosmetic compositions containing high levels of ascorbic acid (greater than 5% by weight) are prone to destabilization, color change, and stickiness, making them unsatisfactory for consumer use, and formulations with ascorbic acid as a powder suffer from degradation.
Incorporating a specific cationic polymer, such as cationic galactomannan gums or cationic cellulose polymers, and a polyoxyethylenated alkylether dimethylsilane compound, along with ascorbic acid, in a composition with a pH between 5 and 7, stabilizes the formulation and improves sensory properties.
The composition maintains stability and transparency while reducing stickiness, ensuring good sensory properties during application, even at high ascorbic acid concentrations.
Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Transparent cosmetic composition with ascorbic acid, a specific cationic polymer, and at least one polyoxyethylenated alkylether dimethylsilane compound
[0001] The present invention relates to an aqueous transparent cosmetic composition, comprising ascorbic acid, at least one cationic polymer chosen from cationic galactomannan gums and cationic cellulose polymers modified by groups comprising at least one linear fatty chain, and at least one polyoxyethylenated alkylether dimethylsilane compound.
[0002] In cosmetic applications, it is common to add ascorbic acid (vitamin C) as a skin regenerating active ingredient by stimulating the synthesis of collagen responsible for skin firmness, or as a depigmenting agent, as this vitamin reduces the production of melanin responsible for brown spots. Ascorbic acid is also known for its antioxidant properties.
[0003] However, when ascorbic acid is introduced into an aqueous medium (such as emulsions or serums) at high levels (i.e., for example, greater than 5% by weight, preferably greater than 10% by weight), its formulation is difficult to achieve because it destabilizes and changes color drastically. This color change can go as far as a brown coloration, which is prohibitive for the consumer. In addition, these aqueous compositions of the serum or gelled solution type have the disadvantage of being sticky when spread on the skin, which is not satisfactory for the consumer.
[0004] This is why aqueous compositions of the serum or solution type are found on the market, which include ascorbic acid in the form of powder to be solubilized extemporaneously. The disadvantage of this type of product is that vitamin C ends up degrading in the aqueous medium. These products are thus losing their appeal because consumers prefer, for reasons of practicality, serums without prior manipulation, with the guarantee of color stability and without chemical degradation.
[0005] There is therefore a need for an aqueous cosmetic composition comprising ascorbic acid which is stable, i.e. which remains the same color as originally (generally white) and of the same texture, and which does not degrade the active ingredient, in particular retains its transparency, and which has sensory properties which are satisfactory for the user, in particular an acceptable stickiness when applying the composition to the skin.
[0006] Surprisingly, the Applicant has demonstrated that particular polyoxyethylenated alkylether dimethylsilane compounds make it possible to obtain com positions comprising at least one specific cationic polymer and ascorbic acid present in particular at a high content greater than or equal to 5% by weight, more particularly greater than or equal to 10% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition, which are stable over time and temperature, while exhibiting sensory properties during application, in particular an acceptable stickiness when spreading on keratin materials such as the skin.
[0007] Thus, the present invention relates to a cosmetic composition comprising:
[0008] - at least 30% by weight of water relative to the total weight of the composition,
[0009] - at least 5% by weight of ascorbic acid relative to the total weight of the composition,
[0010] - at least one cationic polymer chosen from galactomannan gums ca cationic and cationic cellulose polymers modified by groups comprising at least one linear fatty chain, and
[0011] - at least 0.2% by weight of a polyoxyethylenated alkylether dimethylsilane compound
[0012] said composition having a pH between 5 and 7.
[0013] The invention also relates to a cosmetic process for caring for keratin materials, preferably the skin, comprising the application to said keratin materials of a composition according to the invention.
[0014] Preferably, the composition according to the invention is an aqueous solution, more preferably an aqueous solution with a slightly gelled appearance. By "substantially free of surfactants" is meant that the composition according to the invention has a surfactant content of less than or equal to 2% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition, preferably less than or equal to 1% by weight. The surfactants may preferably be peptizers, the concentration of which is between 0.1 and 2% by weight; they allow the solubilization of a small quantity of oil(s) or lipophilic compounds or active ingredients or perfume(s) (i.e. concentration of perfume(s) or oil(s) or lipophilic compound(s) of between 0.05% and 2%). Aqueous phase

[0035] Cationic polymer chosen from cationic galactomannan gums and cationic cellulose polymers modified by groups comprising at least one linear fatty chain
[0036] The cationic polymer according to the invention is chosen from cationic galactomannan gums (cationic guars) and cationic cellulose polymers modified by groups comprising at least one linear fatty chain (preferably polyquaternium-67).
[0037] Indeed, these polymers are more favorable in particular to the stability of the compositions.

[0039] Galactomannans are polysaccharides composed mainly of galactose and mannose units, in which the mannose units are linked by a 1-4-glycosidic bond and the galactose branching takes place by means of a 1-6 bridge to the mannose units. Each ring of the galactose or mannose units (or sugar units) carries three free hydroxyl groups available for chemical reaction. Galactomannans are generally found in the endosperm of legume seeds such as guar or carob.
[0040] The preferred cationic groups are chosen from those comprising primary, secondary, tertiary and / or quaternary amine groups.
[0041] The cationic galactomannan gums used generally have a weight-average molecular mass of between approximately 500 and 5x106, and preferably between approximately 103 and 3x106.

[0043] Among these trialkylammonium groups, we can particularly mention the trimethylammonium and triethylammonium groups.
[0044] Even more preferably, these groups represent from 5% to 20% by weight of the total weight of the modified galactomannan gum.
[0045] According to the invention, the cationic galactomannan gum is preferably a guar gum comprising hydroxypropyl trialkylammonium groups, more preferably a guar gum comprising hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium groups, i.e. a guar gum modified for example by 2,3-epoxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride.
[0046] These galactomannan gums, in particular guar gums, modified by cationic groups, are products already known in themselves and are, for example, described in US patents 3,589,578 and US 4,031,307. Such products are also sold in particular under the trade names Jaguar EXCEL, Jaguar C13 S, Jaguar C 15, Jaguar C 17 and Jaguar C162 (Guar Hydroxypropyl-trimonium Chloride) by the company Rhodia, under the name Amilan® Guar (Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride) by the company Degussa, and under the name N- Hance® 3000 (Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride) by Aqualon.

Transparency Assessment
[0113] For the evaluation of transparency, a 30 ml sample is introduced into standardized tubes. The measurement of turbidity in NTU is carried out, for example, with a turbidimeter model 2100P from Hach Company, the tubes used for the measurement being referenced AR397A cat 24347-06. The measurements are carried out at room temperature (from 20°C to 25°C). Tights Evaluation
[0114] The reduction in stickiness of fresh formulas upon application is also measured: evaluation 15 seconds after application of the stickiness by a panel of 10 experts (evaluation scale from 1 to 5, 1 being not sticky and 5 very sticky).
[0115] The protocol for evaluating the tights is as follows: 50pl of product are applied to the back of a hand covered with a membrane that mimics the characteristics of the skin. With three fingers of the other hand (index, middle and ring fingers), 15 turns are made in 15 seconds.
[0116] The stickiness is assessed after 15 seconds with the applicator fingers, by tactile assessment, tapping twice.
[0117] The skin adheres or not according to a rating between 1 and 5 (according to the evaluation scale of 1 to 5, 1 being not sticky and 5 very sticky). The evaluations are carried out by a panel of a minimum of 10 expert people.
[0118] Rinse your fingers between each product with a cloth moistened with warm water.
[0119] An improvement in the tights compared to a reference product, in the present case a reference composition not comprising BIS-PEG-18 METHYL ETHER DIMETHYL SILANE, is considered when an improvement of at least 9% in the rating is observed.
[0120] Composition A according to the invention has the following properties:
[0121] - Maintaining transparency below 100 NTU over time and in tem temperature (after 1 week at 45°C)
[0122] - No crystals observed macroscopically and microscopically during the time and temperature (after 1 week at 45°C)
[0123] - Physicochemical stability over time and temperature (after 1 week at 45°C).
[0124] - Good stickiness when applying the composition to the skin
[0125] Composition A according to the invention is stable and transparent for one week at 45°C.
[0126] Composition C outside the invention, comprising 1% DIMETHICONE, and no BIS-PEG-18 METHYL ETHER DIMETHYL SILANE, is not stable, a phase shift is observed after one week at 45°C.
[0127] The stickiness rating 15 seconds after application of composition A according to the invention, comprising BIS-PEG-18 METHYL ETHER DIMETHYL SILANE, is significantly reduced compared to composition B outside the invention not comprising BIS-PEG-18 METHYL ETHER DIMETHYL SILANE; from 1.4 to 1.2 (greater than 9%).
[0128] Thus, surprisingly, the compositions according to the invention comprising at least 0.2% by weight of polyoxyethylenated alkyl ether dimethylsilane compound, in particular BIS-PEG-18 METHYL ETHER DIMETHYL SILANE, significantly reduce the stickiness during the application of an aqueous composition comprising a high content of ascorbic acid (12% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition), and a cationic polymer such as polyquaternium-67, while being stable, in comparison respectively with a composition not comprising polyoxyethylenated alkyl ether dimethylsilane compound according to the invention (composition B), or comprising a silicone compound such as DIMETHICONE (composition C).
[0129] Composition A according to the invention has good stickiness when applied to the skin.
