Description

Title of the invention: Fluidic device combining a non-return valve and a two-flow flow limiter Technical field

[0001] The invention relates to a fluidic device, comprising an inlet and an outlet and combining the functions of a non-return valve in a first direction and a flow limiter in the other direction. Prior art

[0002] A tank valve assembly or OTV (from the English "on tank valve") is intended to be mounted at the head of a fluid tank in order to allow it to be connected to a line. The tank valve assembly makes it possible to perform the functions of filling, drawing, as well as safety functions. The use / drawing pipe advantageously comprises a non-return valve preventing a return of the fluid to the tank. The use / drawing pipe also advantageously comprises a flow limiter allowing the passage of a nominal use flow leaving the tank, when a nominal backpressure is present, and drastically limiting the outgoing flow, when no significant backpressure is present, suggesting a critical situation of rupture of the line.

[0003] The invention proposes an advantageous concept for combining these three functions in a particularly small volume, suitable for a tank valve assembly. Summary of the invention

[0020] [Fig.5] and [Fig.6] show, in exploded perspective view, the device of [Fig.l], res respectively from two points of view,

[0021] [Fig.7] shows, in a cutaway profile view, a device according to one embodiment without means of balancing recall. Description of the embodiments

[0022] [Fig. 2] shows a device 1 according to the invention in its rest configuration. This configuration is also substantially identical to the nominal configuration, when a small variation in negative pressure is present between the inlet 2 on the right and the outlet 3 on the left of the device 1. The device 1 then passes from the inlet 2 to the outlet 3 and behaves like a flow limiter.

[0023] The diagram in [Fig.4] shows the fluid diagram of a tank valve assembly 30 or OTV (from the English "on tank valve"). Such a valve assembly 30 is intended to be mounted at the head of a fluid tank 31, such as a hydrogen tank, in order to allow it to be connected to a line 32. The tank valve assembly 30 makes it possible to carry out the filling and drawing functions, as well as safety functions. The line 32 allows either the filling of the tank 31, or during use, the drawing of the fluid contained in the tank 31.

[0024] The valve assembly 30 connects the tank 31 to the line 32 by a main pipe. This main pipe accommodates a device 1. It also includes a strainer 35, 36 at each of its ends. It also includes a solenoid valve 33 and a cut-off valve 34, in series with the device 1.

[0025] This main pipe is intended for drawing. When the valves 33, 34 are open, the fluid contained in the reservoir 31 can pass, from right to left, towards the line 32.

[0026] The valve assembly 30 also comprises a first secondary pipe receiving a non-return valve 37 and arranged as a bypass from the main pipe. This first secondary pipe is intended for filling the reservoir 31. When the valve 34 is open and the solenoid valve 33 is closed, the fluid can pass, from the line 32, from left to right, to the reservoir 31. The non-return valve 37 ensures that the fluid does not pass through the first secondary pipe when drawing.

[0027] The valve assembly 30 also comprises a second secondary pipe receiving a manual valve 38 and arranged as a branch of the main pipe. This second secondary pipe makes it possible to create a bypass.

[0028] The valve assembly 30 also comprises a vent pipe comprising a safety valve 39 or TPRD (from the English “thermal pressure relief device”), allowing fluid to be evacuated in the event of overpressure.

[0029] The valve assembly 30 also comprises a temperature sensor 40 measuring the temperature of the tank 31.

[0030] At the location of the valve assembly 30 where it is arranged, a fluidic device 1 according to the invention advantageously ensures three functions corresponding to three operating modes: a nominal use / drawing mode, a critical mode or use in case of breakage of line 32 and a filling mode.

[0031] During filling of the tank 31, the fluid pressure is greater at the outlet 3 of the device 1 than at its inlet 2. The solenoid valve 33 is closed. The valve 34 is open. The valve 38 is closed. The fluid circulates, in the plane of the diagram, from the left to the right. This circulation passes through the first secondary pipe, the non-return valve 37 being open. The device 1 must, in this filling mode, provide a non-return valve function, in order to prevent excessive pressure stress on the solenoid valve 33.

[0032] During nominal use, the fluid from the tank is used by a consumer connected to line 32. Solenoid valve 33 is open. Valve 34 is open. Valve 38 is closed. The fluid flows from right to left. This circulation passes through the primary pipe and crosses device 1, from right to left, i.e. from inlet 2 to outlet 3. Device 1 must, in this nominal drawing mode, provide a flow limiter function, by providing a calibrated passage orifice.

[0033] It is possible that a break in line 32 may occur. This switches to a critical mode. In this critical mode, it is desired to drastically limit the fluid outlet from the reservoir 31. The solenoid valve 33 is always open. The valve 34 is always open. The valve 38 is always closed. The fluid always flows from right to left. This circulation always passes through the primary pipe and always passes through the device 1, from right to left, i.e. from inlet 2 to outlet 3. The device 1 must, in this critical mode, ensure a drastic flow limitation function, since the drawn fluid is supposedly lost.

[0034] Also, for this, the fluidic device 1 is a dipole in that it comprises an inlet 2 and an outlet 3 connected by a body 4. This body 4 forms a pipe between the inlet 2 and the outlet 3.

[0035] The device 1 comprises a non-return valve 5-11. This non-return valve 5-11 is shaped to prevent the passage of a fluid from the outlet 3 to the inlet 2, i.e. in a direction opposite to the nominal use / drawing direction.

[0036] The device 1 also comprises a flow limiter 13-19. This flow limiter 13-19 is shaped to allow the passage of a fluid, in the direction of use, i.e. from the inlet 2 to the outlet 3. Two modes are present: a nominal mode and a critical mode.

[0037] In the nominal mode, the circulation of fluid takes place according to a first flow rate, or nominal flow rate. The nominal mode is characterized by the detection of a pressure difference AP, between the outlet 3 and the inlet 2, remaining low, i.e. lower than a threshold S. In nominal drawing, the fluid consumer ensures sufficient counter pressure, so that the pressure drop AP does not become greater than the threshold S.

[0038] In the critical mode, the circulation of fluid takes place according to a second flow rate, or critical flow rate, significantly lower than the first flow rate. The critical mode is characterized by the detection of a pressure difference AP, between the outlet 3 and the inlet 2, which is greater, i.e. greater than the threshold S. A rupture of the line 32 would result in a very low pressure, substantially equal to atmospheric pressure, at the outlet 3. The presence of a significant pressure at the inlet 2, due to the presence of the reservoir 31, would then result in a significant drop in pressure AP. Also, conversely, the detection of a significant drop in pressure AP, greater than the threshold S, is interpreted as a rupture of the line 32. The threshold S discriminates between the nominal mode and the critical mode.

[0039] To achieve these functions, the invention proposes a device 1. An embodiment of this device 1 is illustrated in Figures 1-3, 5, 6. [Fig. 1] shows the device 1 in filling mode. [Fig. 2] shows the device 1 in nominal mode. [Fig. 3] shows the device 1 in critical mode.

[0040] To achieve the three functions, the device 1 comprises two members: a non-return valve 5-11 and a flow limiter 13-19. These two members comprise many similar parts. In order to distinguish them, the parts of the non-return valve 5-11 have the word “non-return” attached to their name and the parts of the limiter 13-19 have the word “limiter” attached to their name.

[0041] To perform the non-return valve function, the non-return valve 5-11 comprises a non-return piston 5 and a non-return seat 6. The non-return piston 5 can slide inside the body 4. The non-return piston 5 is more particularly shaped to be pushed, in the direction of the non-return seat 6, i.e. from left to right in the plane of the figures, by a fluid flowing from the outlet 3, located on the left, to the inlet 2, located on the right. The non-return seat 6 comprises a non-return hole 9 fluidically merged with the inlet 2 and constituting the only passageway for the fluid. The non-return piston 5 is shaped, at one of its ends, which is called the non-return end 8, in a manner complementary to the non-return hole 9. Said non-return end 8 is arranged opposite the non-return hole 9.Also, when the non-return piston 5 and its non-return end 8 are pushed against the non-return seat 6, the non-return end 8 closes the non-return hole 9, preventing any passage of fluid.

[0042] The complementarity of the shape of the non-return end 8 and the shape of the non-return seat 6 on the edges of the non-return hole 9 aims to obtain a seal. These shapes are for example cone / cone or sphere / cone.

[0043] The non-return function desired in the application envisaged for the device 1 does not require extensive sealing. Also, a simple non-return end 8 / non-return hole 9 contact is sufficient. If greater sealing is desired, it is possible to add a seal at the contact ring between the non-return end return 8 and the non-return hole 9.

[0044] To achieve the two flow limiter functions, the flow limiter 13-19 comprises a limiter piston 13 and a limiter seat 14. The limiter piston 13 can slide inside the body 4. The limiter piston 13 is more particularly shaped to be pushed, in the direction of the limiter seat 14, i.e. from right to left in the plane of the figures, by a fluid flowing from the inlet 2, located on the right, towards the outlet 3, located on the left. The limiter seat 14 comprises a limiter hole 17 fluidically merged with the outlet 3 and constituting the only passageway for the fluid. The limiter piston 13 is shaped, at one of its ends, which is called the limiter end 16, in a manner complementary to the limiter hole 17. Said limiter end 16 is arranged opposite the limiter hole 17.Also, when the limiter piston 13 and its limiter end 16 are pushed against the limiter seat 14, the limiter end 16 closes the limiter hole 17, substantially preventing any passage of fluid.

[0045] According to another characteristic, the limiter end 16 is pierced with a leak 22. This leak 22, or leak pipe, is opposite the limiter hole 17 and thus connects the outlet 3 to the right part of the limiter piston 13 and therefore with the interior of the device 1. This leak 22 determines the leak flow rate, i.e. the reduced flow rate, the only one authorized in critical mode. This is illustrated in [Fig.3]. The very low pressure present at outlet 3 in critical mode, causes, relative to the pressure from the reservoir 31, a large pressure drop in the device 1. This has the effect that the fluid pushes from inlet 2 to outlet 3, from right to left, the limiting piston 13. This then closes the limiting seat 14. The only remaining outlet path for the fluid is then the leak 22 which passes through the limiting piston 13, through its limiting end 16, at the right of the limiting hole 17. This leak 22 is preferably calibrated.

[0046] According to another characteristic, the non-return piston 5 and the limiting piston 13 are arranged telescopically. This characteristic is very advantageous in that it makes it possible to produce a particularly compact device 1, mainly in length along its axis, and thus to allow easy integration of the device 1 into a valve assembly 30. For this, each of the two pistons, non-return piston 5 and limiting piston 13, on the side of their other end 10, 18, respectively opposite the end 8, 16 which faces the seat 6, 14, is shaped in the shape of a bell. The telescopic assembly is then made possible by a bell of a piston 5, 13 surrounding the bell of the other piston 5, 13. Thus, as illustrated in the figures, the non-return piston 5 surrounds, substantially concentrically, the limiting piston 13. The reverse, i.e. the limiting piston 13 surrounding the non-return piston 5 would also be possible and equivalent.

[0047] In order to produce a detector, capable of detecting the different pressure drop values which determine the operating mode among nominal mode, mode critical and filling mode, it is appropriate to judiciously arrange the return means 7, 15, 21, the respective arrangements and stiffnesses of which will make it possible to achieve the three configurations of figures 1-3 corresponding to the operating modes. The person skilled in the art knows how to size these return means according to the modes and the thresholds S of pressure drop value. The threshold S determines the change of mode between nominal mode and critical mode. Another implicit threshold corresponds to the change of direction of the pressure drop, and determines the change of mode between nominal mode and filling mode.

[0048] According to another characteristic, the non-return valve 5-11 further comprises a non-return return means 7. The non-return return means 7 is arranged so that it tends to push the non-return piston 5 towards the non-return seat 6. Thus, the non-return valve 5-11 is closed by default. An operating pressure, from the inlet 2 towards the outlet 3, pushes the non-return piston 5 and acts against the non-return return means 7 to open the non-return valve 5-11. The non-return return means 7 acts between the non-return piston 5 and the body 4. According to a preferred embodiment, the non-return return means 7 is a compression coil spring, arranged between the other non-return end 10 of the non-return piston 5 and the body 4, to the left of the non-return piston 5, i.e. on the side of the outlet 3. In the embodiment illustrated in the figures, the pressure is on the plug 23, which is here assimilated to the body 4.

[0049] According to another characteristic, the flow limiter 13-19 also comprises a limiter return means 15. The limiter return means 15 is arranged in such a way that it tends to move the limiter piston 13 away from the limiter seat 14. Thus, the flow limiter 13-19 is open by default, allowing a first significant flow rate to pass. A low pressure drop, below the threshold S, is not sufficient to press the limiter piston 13 against the limiter seat 14. The limiter return means 15 acts between the limiter piston 13 and the body 4. According to a preferred embodiment, the limiter return means 15 is a compression coil spring, arranged between the other limiter end 18 of the limiter piston 13 and the body 4, to the left of the limiter piston 13, i.e. on the side of the outlet 3. In the embodiment illustrated in the figures, the pressure is on the plug 23, which is here assimilated to the body 4.

[0050] A device 1 according to the invention can operate without the balancing means 21 described above. Such a device 1 is illustrated in [Fig.7].

[0051] Such a device 1 is however more restrictive to design. Such a design choice results in tighter tolerance constraints in the dimensioning of the non-return return means 7 and the limiting return means 15, as well as on the lengths of the respective telescopic parts of the non-return piston 5 and the limiting piston 13.

[0052] Also, according to another characteristic, the device 1 further comprises preferably a balancing return means 21. The balancing return means 21 is arranged so that it tends to move the non-return piston 5 away from the limiting piston 13. The balancing return means 21 acts between the non-return piston 5 and the limiting piston 13. According to a preferred embodiment, the balancing return means 21 is a compression coil spring, arranged between the non-return piston 5 and the limiting piston 13.

[0053] According to another characteristic, the non-return piston 5 also comprises at least one non-return bore 11 passing through. This at least one non-return bore 11 is passing through in that it fluidically connects the two sides of the non-return piston 5. Also, the total section of said at least one non-return bore 11 is such that it allows a through flow rate through the non-return piston 5 corresponding to the needs of the device 1 and in particular allowing the limited flow rate in nominal mode. This section must however remain small so that the non-return piston 5 can perform its piston function and move under the effect of a fluid flow coming from the left of the non-return piston 5. This at least one non-return bore 11 can be axial, provided that it is made at the periphery of the non-return piston 5.Alternatively or additionally, if the bore 11 is more central, it is, as shown in figures 1-3, partially axial, on the side of the other non-return end 10 and ends radially so as not to modify the non-return piston 5 at the level of the non-return end 8. The non-return end 8 must remain sealed, at least in the part where it is opposite the non-return hole 9 of the non-return seat 6.

[0054] According to another, similar characteristic, the limiting piston 13 also comprises at least one limiting bore 19 passing through. This at least one bore 19 is passing through in that it fluidically connects the two sides of the limiting piston 13. Also, the total section of said at least one limiting bore 19 is such that it allows a through flow rate through the limiting piston 13 corresponding to the needs of the device 1 and allowing in particular the limited flow rate in nominal mode and the reverse flow rate in critical mode until closing the non-return valve 5-11. This section must however remain small so that the limiting piston 13 can perform its piston function and move under the effect of a fluid flow rate coming from the right of the limiting piston 13. This at least one bore 19 can be axial, provided that it is made at the periphery of the limiting piston 13.Alternatively or additionally, if the limiter bore 19 is more central, it is, as shown in figures 1-3, partially axial, on the side of the other limiter end 18 and ends radially so as not to modify the limiter piston 13 at the limiter end 16. The limiter end 16 must remain substantially sealed, at least in the part where it is opposite the limiter hole 17 of the limiter seat 14. The term “substantially” in the preceding sentence concerns the sealing exception formed by the leak 22. .

[0055] In nominal mode as illustrated in [Fig.2], the limiting piston 13 is not in contact with the limiting seat 14. The nominal flow rate in nominal mode is then the flow rate determined by said at least one non-return bore 11 and said at least one limiting bore 19. More precisely, the nominal flow rate is the flow rate determined by the smallest section among the two bores 11, 19.

[0056] In critical mode as illustrated in [Fig.3], the limiter piston is in contact with the limiter seat 14, the limiter 13-19 is then blocking. The critical flow rate is the flow rate determined by the leak 22.

[0057] The return force of the non-return piston 5 to its closed position must be mainly achieved by the non-return return means 7. The non-return piston 5 reaches a stable position of full opening from a pressure threshold value S depending on the pressure and the flow rate. This position is reached either when the turns of the non-return means 7 are touching, or when the non-return piston 5 is in abutment against its seat.

[0058] For nominal conditions: drawing mode and filling mode, the fluid passage holes are sized so that the fluidic device 1 has a defined pressure loss coefficient.

[0059] For the critical mode, the differential pressure is very largely greater than the value of the threshold S. When the non-return piston 5 reaches its stable position, the force of the balancing return means 21 on the limiting piston 13 is no longer dependent on the position of the non-return piston 5. From a second pressure threshold S2, due to the increase in the flow rate, the limiting piston 13 moves towards the seat. The second threshold S2 is very large compared to the first threshold S.

[0060] The leak 22 is calibrated according to several operating parameters of the system.

[0061] The balancing return means 21 must apply a permanent force to press the limiting piston 13 against the limiting return means 15. The stiffness of the balancing return means 21 is very low compared to the stiffness of the non-return return means 7, so as not to cause the displacement of the limiting piston 131 during the displacement of the non-return piston 5.

[0062] According to another characteristic, the non-return seat 6 is made of a material with the body 4. Alternatively, the non-return seat 6 is made of a material with a plug 23. The body 4 or the plug 23 is then drilled to make the non-return hole 9. The plug 23 is assembled with the body 4. This can be achieved, preferably by means of a thread.

[0063] According to another characteristic, the limiting seat 14 is made of the same material as the body 4. Alternatively, as illustrated in Figures 1-3, the limiting seat 14 is made of the same material as a plug 23. The body 4 or the plug 23 is then pierced to

Device 1 is shown with a plug 23 placed on the left, on the outlet side. It is also possible to produce a device 1 with a plug placed on the right, on the inlet side.
