Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Anhydrous hair treatment composition comprising an alpha hydroxy acid ester. SCOPE OF DISCLOSURE
[0001] This disclosure relates to hair treatment compositions containing one or more alpha hydroxy acid esters, and processes for treating hair, for example, conditioning, facilitating styling and improving the appearance and feel of hair. CONTEXT
[0002] Many people suffer from dry and damaged hair. Dryness and damage can occur due to several factors, including exposure to weather conditions, mechanical treatments (e.g., brushing), excessive chemical processing, blow-drying, heat styling, etc. In addition, the use of cleansing products that can be excessively stripping of the hair's natural oils can not only lead to split ends and dullness but also exacerbate dryness. To mitigate the damage, oil treatments, conditioners, hair masks, and chemical treatments are commonly used.
[0003] The popularity and use of oils for treating dry hair have increased due to their effectiveness and simplicity. Commonly used oils include olive oil, mineral oil, avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, rice bran oil, and coconut oil. However, one problem is that the effects are not usually visible after several hours (e.g., 8 hours) of treatment, and multiple treatments are usually required, which is time-consuming and laborious.
[0004] People desire a treatment for hair or damaged hair that requires neither time nor effort. Various approaches have been developed to revitalize hair. A common method for providing a revitalizing benefit involves using conditioning agents such as surfactants and cationic polymers, high-melting-point fatty compounds, low-melting-point oils, silicone compounds, and combinations thereof. Most of these conditioning agents are known to provide various revitalizing benefits.
[0005] However, there is still a need to improve the ease of styling hair, for example, improved hair alignment, a reduction in volume undesirable (particularly a reduction in frizz), and increased shine. There is also a need to develop hair care products that can provide other benefits simultaneously, in addition to conditioning and revitalizing benefits, such as styling, volume, shaping, and the ability to restyle or reshape (without needing to reapply the product). DISCLOSURE SUMMARY
[0006] This disclosure relates to an essentially anhydrous hair treatment composition and processes for conditioning, facilitating styling, and improving the appearance and feel of hair. The compositions are useful in processes for treating hair, for example, conditioning, softening, and reducing frizz. The compositions are unique because they include a large proportion of alpha hydroxy acid esters, instead of lower monoalcohols, in combination with a large proportion of one or more polyols having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, such as propylene glycol and the like. Although they do not require lower monoalcohols, such as ethanol, the compositions are solubilized, clear (transparent), and free-flowing. The inventors have discovered that alpha hydroxy esters impart a solubilizing effect with one or more polyols, cationic surfactants, fatty compounds, including fatty alcohols, etc.When applied to wet or damp hair, the compositions interact with the available water and form a lamellar phase in situ, which enhances the composition's hydrating and revitalizing capacity. Anhydrous compositions typically include: a. one or more alpha hydroxy acid esters; b. one or more polyols having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms; c. one or more cationic surfactants; d. one or more fatty alcohols having at least 8 carbon atoms; and e. less than 5% by weight of water and monoalcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms;
[0007] in which all percentages by weight are based on the total weight of the composition.
[0008] In various embodiments, the composition further includes one or more fatty compounds other than fatty alcohols, for example, one or more fatty acids, one or more thickening agents, one or more emollients, one or more film-forming agents, and / or one or more miscellaneous ingredients. As mentioned above, the compositions do not require lower monoalcohols having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, such as ethanol. Thus, in various embodiments, the compositions are free or essentially free of ethanol. In other embodiments, the compositions are free or essentially free of ethanol and isopropanol. In still other embodiments, the compositions are free or essentially free of monoalcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
[0009] The composition is typically a solubilized, non-emulsified composition that is transparent or translucent, preferably transparent. When applied to wet or damp hair, the composition forms a lamellar phase in situ. The water present on the wet or damp hair interacts with the composition, causing the formation of a lamellar phase. Additional water may be applied to enhance the formation of the lamellar phase, for example, when the hair is not very wet. Regardless of the hair's "moisture" level, the compositions are easy to apply, form a smooth, opaque cream / lotion during use, and provide deep hydration and conditioning benefits to the hair.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0019] The hair treatment compositions of this disclosure are particularly useful for treating hair, for example, to condition, make hair more manageable, and improve its appearance and feel. Due to their unique ingredients and properties, the compositions enhance the deposition of conditioning agents such as cationic surfactants and fatty compounds on and in the hair. The moisturizing and conditioning properties are long-lasting, giving the hair a light, healthy, and manageable appearance. The compositions typically include: a. one or more alpha hydroxy acid esters; a. one or more polyols having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms; b. one or more cationic surfactants; c. one or more fatty alcohols; and d. less than 5% by weight of water and monoalcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms;
[0020] in which all percentages by weight are based on the total weight of the composition.
[0021] The composition is typically a solubilized and not emulsified composition. In various embodiments, the composition is transparent or translucent. When applied to wet or damp hair, the composition preferentially forms a lamellar phase in situ. In other embodiments, when applied to wet or damp hair, the composition preferentially forms an opaque appearance. When the hair treatment composition is applied and massaged into wet or damp hair, it interacts with the water and becomes creamy or lotion-like and smooth. Consumers generally find the creamy or lotion-like texture pleasant. Treatment with the composition leaves hair moisturized without being weighed down while simultaneously improving manageability.
[0022] The term "transparent" in relation to a transparent composition indicates that the composition has a transmittance of at least 80% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured, for example, using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer. Compositions may have, for example, a transmittance of at least 80%, at least 90%, or at least 95% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured, for example, using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer. The term "clear" is interchangeable with the term "transparent" for the purposes of this disclosure.
[0023] The term "translucent" in relation to a translucent composition indicates that the composition has a transmittance of at least 50% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured for example using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer.
[0024] The term "opaque" in relation to an opaque composition indicates that the composition is not transparent or translucent, that is, that it has a transmittance of less than 50% at a wavelength of 600 nm, for example measured using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer. alpha hydroxy acid esters
[0025] As their name indicates, alpha hydroxy acid esters are esters of alpha hydroxy acids (or alpha-hydroxy acids, α-hydroxy acids, or AHAs). An alpha hydroxy acid ester, as defined in this disclosure, is an organic carboxylic acid in which a hydroxyl group is attached to the carbon atom at the alpha position of the acid. The generic structure of these esters can be represented by the following formula (I): (Ra)(Rb)C(OH)COORc (I)
[0026] wherein Ra and Rb are independently selected from H, F, Cl, I, Br, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl of saturated or unsaturated form, isomeric or non-isomeric, straight-chain or branched or cyclic form, having 1 to 29 carbon atoms, and furthermore Ra and Rb may bear OH, CHO, COOH and an alkoxy group having 1 to 9 atoms of carbon. Rc is an alkyl, aralkyl, or aryl group in saturated or unsaturated form, isomeric or non-isomeric, straight-chain or branched-chain or cyclic, having 1 to 19 carbon atoms. Esters can exist as stereoisomers in the D, L, and DL forms when Ra and Rb are not identical. When a compound contains two or more carboxyl groups, the ester can exist as a partial or complete ester, for example (without limitation), monoethyl tartrate and diethyl tartrate, monoethyl citrate, diethyl citrate, and triethyl citrate.
[0027] Thus, when Ra and Rb are alkyl, they can independently be in any of the C1-C5, C6-C10, C11-C15, C16-C20, C21-C25, and C26-C29 groups. When Rc is alkyl, it can be in any of the C1-C5, C6-C10, C11-C15, and C16-C19 groups. In various embodiments, Ra, Rb, and Rc are independently selected from Cl-Cl2. Typical alkyl, aralkyl, and aryl groups for Ra, Rb, and Rc include methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, pentyl, octyl, decyl, dodecyl, hexadecyl, benzyl, and phenyl.

[0170] The hair treatment composition described above may further comprise or consist of one or more film-forming polymers, or a combination thereof. The one or more thickening polymers (g), in addition to providing a thickening effect, may also provide a film-forming effect. Therefore, in various embodiments, it may be preferable to include a thickening polymer that already has a film-forming effect, and in some embodiments, it may be preferable to include a film-forming polymer for the purpose of forming a film on the hair, which may or may not have a significant influence on thickening.
[0171] The hair treatment composition described above is preferably a solubilized, non-emulsified composition. Furthermore, in various embodiments, upon application of the hair treatment composition to a moist or wet substrate, for example, hair or skin, the composition forms a lamellar phase in situ. Alternatively, upon application to a moist or wet substrate, for example, hair or skin, the composition forms an opaque appearance. In addition, upon application to wet or damp hair, while distributing the composition by massaging it into the hair, the composition transforms into an opaque composition with a rich, creamy, lotion-like consistency. Viscosity
[0172] The compositions of this disclosure typically have a viscosity of about 1 mPa·s to about 10,000 mPa·s at 25 °C, about 5 to about 7,000 mPa·s, or about 10 to about 2,000 mPa·s. Viscosity measurements may be performed, for example, using a Brooksfield viscometer, model: DV- / / + Pro (Brookfield Engineering Laboratories, Inc.) at about 2 revolutions per minute (rpm), at an ambient room temperature of about 20 to 25 °C; spindle sizes may be selected in accordance with the manufacturer's standard operating recommendations, ranging from RV spindle No. 1 to No. 7. As noted above, one or more thickening polymers may optionally be included in the compositions, which will increase the viscosity of the compositions. Therefore, in some cases, the viscosity of the compositions can be from approximately 500 mPa.s to approximately 10,000 mPa.s at 25 °C.

Processes
[0174] The hair treatment compositions of this disclosure are useful for treating hair, for example, to condition, facilitate styling, and improve the appearance and feel of hair. In various embodiments, the hair treatment composition is a solubilized, non-emulsified composition. In other embodiments, the composition is a solubilized, non-emulsified composition; after application to wet or damp hair, the composition forms an opaque appearance in situ. In other embodiments, the composition is a solubilized, non-emulsified composition; after application to wet or damp hair, the composition forms a lamellar phase in situ.A "lamellar phase" generally refers to the arrangement of long-chain, polar-headed, non-polar-tailed molecules in a bulk polar liquid environment (i.e., the water in the hair), in the form of bilayered sheets separated by the bulk liquid. The compositions can be applied to wet or damp hair and distributed by massaging them into the hair, for example, with the hands, and / or spread throughout the hair with a comb or brush. This results in smoothing and softening the hair, reducing frizz, dryness, and unwanted volume. The compositions can remain in the hair or can optionally be rinsed out before drying and / or styling. Preferably, hair treatment compositions are rinsed out of the hair after being applied and distributed by massage.
[0175] In certain embodiments, hair treatment compositions can be used as a leave-in product. The hair treatment compositions are applied to wet or damp hair and can remain on the hair indefinitely; that is, the hair composition is not rinsed out before the hair is dried or styled.
[0176] The processes for treating hair according to the disclosure also include The application process varies according to different routines. For example, the compositions can be mixed with shampoo (or conditioner) before application to the hair. Alternatively, the composition can be layered on top of (or lathered into) the hair after the shampoo (or conditioner) has already been applied. Furthermore, the composition can be applied separately from the shampoo (or conditioner), that is, applied to the hair after rinsing out the shampoo (or conditioner). In some cases, it is preferable to treat the hair with a composition from this disclosure before shampooing; for example, applying the composition to wet or damp hair before shampooing. After shampooing, the hair can also be treated (optionally) with a conditioner. Kits
[0177] The hair care compositions of this disclosure may be incorporated into a kit. For example, kits may include at least one hair care composition according to this disclosure and one or more additional compositions, for example, a shampoo, conditioner, etc. The individual compositions are contained separately in the kits. In some cases, kits include one or more compositions according to this disclosure and a shampoo, both of which are contained separately. Kits may also include one or more compositions according to this disclosure, a shampoo, and a conditioner, all of which are contained separately. Instructions, mixing components, brushes, gloves, measuring tools, etc., may also be optionally included in the kits.
[0178] Compositions may be packaged in various different containers, such as, for example, a ready-to-use container. Non-limiting examples of useful packaging include tubes, jars, caps, unit-dose packs, and bottles, including squeezable tubes and bottles. In some cases, the packaging is a tube, such as a two-compartment tube, or double tubes, each forming a separate compartment. Each compartment may contain a different composition. For example, one tube or compartment may contain a composition according to this disclosure, and the other tube may contain a composition to be used with the composition, for example, a shampoo, a conditioner, or an all-in-one shampoo / conditioner (i.e., a shampoo-conditioner; also referred to as a "co-wash").
[0179] In various embodiments, the hair compositions of this disclosure are packaged as a spray product, enabling the user to apply the compositions to the hair by spraying the composition onto the hair. Furthermore, the compositions may be packaged in a spray bottle. The dispenser, which may be a manually operated pump-operated spray bottle, or the spray bottle may be pressurized so that the compositions are dispensed from a pressurized aerosol container. A propellant gas may be used to expel the composition from the container. Suitable propellants include, but are not limited to, a liquefiable gas or a halogenated propellant. Examples of suitable propellants include dimethyl ether and hydrocarbon propellants such as propane, n-butane, isobutane, CFCs, and CFC substitute propellants. Propellants may be used alone or in mixtures.
[0180] The processes for treating hair according to the disclosure will vary but typically include applying a hair treatment composition of this disclosure to wet or damp hair, leaving the composition on the hair for a sufficient time, and rinsing the composition from the hair. The composition may be applied to the hair in a sequence with other compositions. For example, the compositions may be applied to the hair before shampooing, after shampooing, before conditioning, and / or after conditioning. However, the compositions need not be used in a sequence.
[0181] The compositions of this disclosure may be left on the hair for a minimal period before being rinsed out, but it is not necessary to leave the composition on the hair. Conveniently, the compositions may be applied and left on the hair for a period of time typical of a normal shampoo and / or conditioner. For example, the composition (whether combined with another hair treatment composition such as a shampoo or conditioner) may be applied to the hair and left on the hair for a few seconds (1, 2, 3, or 5 seconds) up to approximately 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 minutes.
[0182] The hair treatment composition can be applied to the hair immediately after or before hair treatment with another composition (e.g., shampoo and / or conditioner). For example, hair treatment compositions can be applied to the hair approximately 1, 2, 5, 10, or 20 minutes before or after the application of shampoo and / or conditioner.
[0183] The compositions of this disclosure are unique in their ability to provide hair with improved manageability and smooth texture. Accordingly, this disclosure relates to processes for treating hair, for example, to improve hair manageability and to impart a smooth texture. More specifically, the compositions can be used in processes to revitalize hair, provide curl definition, provide frizz control, improve combability and detangling, and provide a smooth texture. [0210] The terms "comprising", "having" and "including" are used in their broad and non-limiting sense.
[0211] The terms “a”, “an”, “the” and “the” are understood to encompass both the plural and the singular.
[0212] The compositions and processes of the present invention may include, consist of, or consist essentially of the essential elements and limitations of the disclosure described herein, together with any additional or optional ingredients, components or limitations described herein or otherwise useful.
[0213] A "composition colorant" is a compound or ingredient that colors the composition but has no appreciable coloring effect on hair. In other words, the composition colorant is included to give color to the composition for aesthetic purposes but is not intended to impart coloring properties to hair. Hair gels, for example, may come in a variety of different colors (e.g., light blue, light pink, etc.), but applying the hair gel to the hair does not visibly change the hair color. Thus, a composition colorant differs from a hair coloring agent. A composition colorant colors compositions; a hair coloring agent can change the color of compositions (and often does), but also hair color.
[0214] The term "rinse-off" as used here indicates that the composition is used in a context where the composition is ultimately rinsed or washed off the treated surface (e.g., skin, hair, or hard surfaces) after or during application of the product. These rinse-off compositions should be distinguished from compositions referred to as "leave-in" compositions. For example, a rinse-off composition is applied to the hair, optionally left on the hair for a short period (e.g., from a few seconds up to about 5, 10, or 15 minutes), and is then rinsed from the hair before styling.
[0215] The compositions described throughout this disclosure may be a "leave-in" composition. A "leave-in" composition refers to a composition that is applied to the skin or hair and is not subjected to immediate rinsing and / or washing, for example, for at least 4 hours or for a period of time ranging from 4 hours up to 72 hours, from 4 hours up to 48 hours, or from 8 hours up to 36 hours, or from 8 hours up to 24 hours. In other words, the product is applied to the hair and remains on the hair as styled; that is, it is not removed from the hair before styling.
[0216] A "lamellar phase" generally refers to the arrangement of long-chain, polar-headed, nonpolar-tailed molecules in a bulk polar liquid environment (i.e., hair water), in the form of bilayer sheets separated by a bulk liquid.
[0217] The term “non-linear fatty acids”, as used in this disclosure, refers to unsaturated fatty acids and / or branched-chain fatty acids.
[0218] The term "transparent" in relation to a transparent composition indicates that the composition has a transmittance of at least 80% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured, for example, using a UV-visible Lambda 40 spectrometer. Compositions may have, for example, a transmittance of at least 80%, at least 90%, or at least 95% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured, for example, using a UV-visible Lambda 40 spectrometer. The term "clear" is interchangeable with the term "transparent" for the purposes of this disclosure. A person can typically see through a transparent composition, for example, and read the text on the other side of a clear glass or clear plastic bottle containing the composition.
[0219] The term "translucent" in relation to a translucent composition indicates that the composition has a transmittance of at least 50% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured, for example, using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer. A person is unlikely to be able to see through a translucent composition, for example, and read the text on the other side of a clear glass or clear plastic bottle. containing the composition. Instead, the text is usually blurry and difficult if not impossible to read, however the movement and structure can normally be identified.
[0220] The term "opaque" in relation to an opaque composition indicates that the composition is not transparent or translucent, i.e. that it has a transmittance of less than 50% at a wavelength of 600 nm, for example measured using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer.
[0221] All percentages, parts and ratios herein are based on the total weight of the compositions in this disclosure, unless otherwise stated.
[0222] All ranges and values disclosed in the description are inclusive and combinable. For example, any value or point described herein that falls within a range described herein can serve as a minimum or maximum value for deducing a subrange, and so on. Furthermore, all ranges provided are intended to include each specific range within the given ranges, as well as a combination of intermediate subranges. Thus, a range of 1 to 5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as subranges such as 2 to 5, 3 to 5, 2 to 3, 2 to 4, 1 to 4, and so on.
[0223] Except in functional examples, or unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing quantities of ingredients and / or reaction conditions are understood to be modified in all circumstances by the term "approximately", meaning to within + / - 5% of the number indicated.
[0224] As used herein, the expression "at least one" is interchangeable with "one or more" and therefore includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.
[0225] The expression "substantially free" or "essentially free" as used herein means that at least less than about 5% by weight of a specific substance is added to a composition, relative to the total weight of the compositions. However, the compositions may include less than about 2% by weight, less than about 1% by weight, less than about 0.5% by weight, less than about 0.1% by weight, less than about 0.01% by weight, or none of the specified substance. For example, the compositions in this disclosure are "essentially anhydrous." Therefore, the composition includes less than about 5% by weight of water. However, the compositions may include less than about 2% by weight, less than about 1% by weight, less than about 0.5% by weight, less than about 0.1% by weight, less than about 0.01% by weight, or no water.
[0226] The term "active ingredient," as used herein with respect to the percentage quantity of an ingredient or raw material, refers to 100% of the activity of the ingredient or raw material. All ingredients are listed as 100% active ingredient unless otherwise stated.
[0227] “Cosmetically acceptable” means that the article in question is compatible with a keratinous substrate such as skin and hair. For example, a "cosmetically acceptable vector" means a vector compatible with a keratinous substrate such as skin and hair.
[0228] Throughout the disclosure, the phrase "one of their combinations" (or "one of their mixtures") is used, following a list of elements as shown in the following example where the letters A through F represent the elements: "one or more elements selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F or one of their combinations." The phrase "one of their combinations" does not require that the mixture include all of the elements A, B, C, D, E, and F (although all of the elements A, B, C, D, E, and F may be included). Rather, it indicates that a combination of two or more of the elements A, B, C, D, E, and F may be included. In other words, it is similar to the wording "one or more elements selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, and a combination of any two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F."
[0229] Similarly, the expression "one of their salts" also refers to "their salts." Thus, when the disclosure refers to "an item selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, one of their salts, or one of their combinations," it indicates that one or more of A, B, C, D, and F may be included, one or more of a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included, or a combination of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included.
[0230] The salts referred to throughout the disclosure may include salts having a counterion such as an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or ammonium counterion. This list of counterions is not exhaustive.
[0231] Some of the compounds mentioned throughout the disclosure may be present in the form of a salt in the composition or may be added to the composition in the form of a salt (and dissociate in the composition). Thus, all compounds and quantities of compounds refer to both the salt form of the compound and the dissociated form of the compound. In other words, even if the phrase "one of their salts" is not specifically or expressly stated with respect to ingredients that may form salts or are available as salts, it is understood that the salt form of the compound is included.
[0232] The expression "included" for a concentration range means that the limits of that range are included in the defined interval.
[0233] “Volatile”, as used here, means having a flash point below about 100 °C.
[0234] “Non-volatile”, as used here, means having a flash point greater than about 100 °c.
[0235] The term "polymers", as defined herein, includes homopolymers and copolymers formed from at least two different types of monomers.
[0236] The term "INCI" is an abbreviation for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, which is a system of names provided by the International Nomenclature Committee of the Personal Care Products Council to describe the ingredients of personal care products.
[0237] As used herein, all the ranges provided are intended to include each specific range within the given ranges, as well as a combination of intermediate sub-ranges. Thus, a range from 1 to 5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, as well as sub-ranges such as 2-5, 3-5, 2-3, 2-4, 1-4, etc.
[0238] All components and elements positively presented in this statement may be negatively excluded from the claims. In other words, the compositions of this disclosure may be free or substantially free of any components and elements positively cited throughout this disclosure.
[0239] Some of the various identified component categories may overlap. In such cases where an overlap may exist and the composition includes both components (or the composition includes more than two overlapping components), an overlapping compound or ingredient does not represent more than one component of the claims. For example, if a polyacrylate is included in the description of a thickening polymer and in the description of a film-forming polymer, a single polyacrylate is understood to be solely the thickening polymer or solely the film-forming polymer. A single polyacrylate cannot be interpreted simultaneously as both a thickening polymer and a film-forming polymer, for example, where the claims disclose both a thickening polymer and a film-forming polymer (even though the polyacrylate can function as both a thickening polymer and a film-forming polymer). In other words, a single compound or ingredient cannot simultaneously act as two different components or elements of a claim.
